Hey tumblr, I know it’s been a Hot Minute since I last posted, but I Need Your Advice/any critiques you have to offer on these wips -
For context, I am putting together a Tutorial on Wolves/werewolves for a friend of mine (who is a fellow artist and is also probably viewing this 👋) and here are some of the wips I have put together thus far:
I am planning to draw at least double this amount and do a tonne of Cleanup, but in the meantime is there anything obvious that needs to be fixed/do you believe any of this would be Tutorial worthy?
Hey me again just working on shading this piece an I was just wondering if leos arm muscles looked right? I'm not really sure an I can't find any good references
drawing anatomy when ur hypermobile is hard because you'll see something looks off but also you're like. how else is it supposed to look? do i rotate the limb? are the legs crossed too far? do arms even bend like that? and it forces you to reckon with how gloriously weird your body is.
but also i think we should just start leaving our hypermobile creations alone and tell anyone who goes "yOuR aNaToMy iS oFF" to suck it.
How do you study/practice anatomy? I admire your sense of how the body works and really wanted to know your process in approaching drawing bodies!
Thank you sm Anon! 💛
- I like experimenting with different art styles and to observe how different artists stylise anatomy! What do I think looks odd or looks really nice
- References!!! Especially for hands... Sometimes you gotta trace a photo of your hand.
- If I feel like I'm not getting better I do some figure drawing online, a great site for that is Line of Action
-I prefer video tutorials > books (more in depth and no confusing jumps between steps/you get to see every step!)
Drawfee Extra on YouTube has great tutorials, that are fun to draw along to and people ask questions that you might have as well!
I learned a lot from the Internet :)
- learning shorthand (breaking it down into simple shapes) for the different body parts! I wouldn't recommend boxes tho, they can get stiff quickly. I use rounded shapes and lines!
They talk about shorthand in this one, it's really great if you have the time. I could repeat a lot from it.
- here's a little process of how I usually sketch anatomy
Hope this helps! Thank you again for the kind words <3
Some quickpose studies because it has been far too long since I've done any lmao. Each initial sketch (the red one) took 60 seconds I went over it again after I finished with the black marker
I've been trapped with a malfunctioning tablet pen for a couple weeks and I've been cursed to go back to basics while I waited for my replacement. Pleasantly surprised I still hold up
Ahh here we go again, obliques are giving me trouble...guess I never really solved my issue with them.
I've been trying to make my figures more lean but I can't seem to get that shape from the sides of the torso (AKA, the obliques)
I've noticed that the ends of the obliques round out to a D shape, then wrap around the groin area in a almost V shape but I can't seem to get either down.
