2,000-Year-Old 'Rainbow Cup' Celtic Gold Coin Discovered in Germany
Legend has it that "rainbow cups" are drops of gold that fall to Earth at the end of a rainbow.
An extremely rare "rainbow cup" coin minted more than 2,000 years ago by the Celts has been found next to a river in Germany, according to the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection.
The gold coin, minted in the second or first century B.C., features a rare design of a four-pointed star surrounded by arches on one side, said Bernward Ziegaus, a senior curator in the State Archaeological Collection's numismatic department who is studying the coin. Like other rainbow cups, the coin is curved.
"The name rainbow cup coins come from the legend that they are drops of gold that fall to earth at the end of a rainbow," Ziegaus said in an email. "Another legend about these Celtic coins tells us that these coins can only be found by Sunday children," or a child of fortune.
"In fact, the finder was born on a Sunday and is indeed a Sunday child, a lucky child!" he said.
The finder, a collaborator with state archaeological officials, discovered the coin this spring about 45 miles (70 kilometers) west of Munich on the Lech River in the southern state of Bavaria.
It's unknown how the 0.07-ounce (1.9 grams) coin ended up there, but the spot isn't far from a ancient road. This road went from what is now Trento in northern Italy and later became known as the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta that went across the Alps, Ziegaus said.
"Perhaps the coin was accidentally lost along the way," he said.
The "heads" side of the 0.5-inch-wide (13 millimeters) coin "shows a stylized human head with a large eye," with the nose and lips depicted as dots, Ziegaus said. A metal analysis revealed that the coin is 77% gold, 18% silver and 5% copper.
There are only three known rainbow cups with the star-and-arch motif. "The interpretation of the motive is difficult," Ziegaus said. "The star is perhaps a symbol for the four cardinal points, the arches are to be understood as signs for the horizon and the rising and setting of the moon.
The ancient Celts were fierce warriors who lived in mainland Europe and later sacked Rome. Bavaria's oldest Celtic coins date to the third century B.C., but the Roman conquest of the region in 15 B.C. led to the end of Celtic minting, Ziegaus said. After that, Roman coins became the main currency in the region.
It is a wonderful find, even if it is only one coin. Because only very few specimens of this type are known so far," said Marjanko Pilekić, a doctoral candidate of archaeology of coinage, money and the economy in antiquity at Goethe University Frankfurt, who was not involved in the finding.
If more rainbow cups are found in the area, "a picture of the [currency's] distribution can be drawn,' Pilekić told Live Science in an email.
The coin's finder donated the rainbow cup to the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection in Munich. Because it is "extremely rare," it will go on permanent display in the museum with other Celtic coin treasures in 2024, Ziegaus said.

“This…is your aunt’s house?”
“Yeah…”
Her aunt lived in Escondido, but not in any area, she lived in one of the richest condominiums there, the ones where you almost are patted down by the security guard before going past the gates - the only reason they weren’t was because the guy recognized her last name - and could smell the money coming out of the large houses. So when her and Rooster drove up and past the other mansions, he was surprised when they parked in front of Martha’s house.
It was a big house, undoubtedly so, but it was different from the rest. While it kept the Mediterranean style, the bricks were white and the roof dark brown. She had a lot, a lot of plants in the front yard that were obviously landscaped to perfection since the amount of vegetation wasn’t taking over the whole front yard.
But there was more. Her aunt had tiny statues all over her front yard as well, it took Rooster a few seconds to identify what they were but once he did, he arched one eyebrow, “Dwarves?” he questioned, pointing to a tiny statue in between the plants closest to them.
Beatrice looks down at it, “Oh no, gnomes.” she says and her fiancé just furrows his eyebrow, staring back down at the tiny creature that was sitting on a red mushroom with his hands on his chin, giving him a cheeky smile, “My aunt is mystical like that, there are crystals around too.” she gestures to the large amethyst lying next to the daisies then to the clear quartz pieces scattered all over the grass.
Bradley ‘huh’s quietly, following Beatrice up to the front door where he saw a dangling fairy chime swinging with the wind, the thin metal tubes clinking amongst each other to create a soft melody. The doors resembled the hotel’s, being large with intricate floral designs in the stained glass, the deep mahogany color of the wood making the colors appear even more vibrant than normal. Beatrice gave him a smile, then pressed the doorbell, holding his hand with her free one.
There was the soft yapping coming from behind the door, followed by a voice calming the dog down and the door slowly unlocking. Martha’s tall figure appeared once it was open, wearing a long patterned dress - as usual - with billowy sleeves and her glasses on the bridge of her nose, “Oh, my sweet darlings, how happy I am to see you two.” she wasted no time in engulfing both in a hug, kissing their foreheads and then stepping back, “Come on in, oh,” she looks down where a tiny dog was looking up at them, “This is Bailey, he’s just a bit curious about you Bradley, do not worry he won’t nip your feet!”
Bailey’s little body resembled a pomeranian but his ears were longer, like a corgi’s, “Hi Bailey,” Beatrice cooed, crouching down to scratch the tiny dog behind the ears.
“He’s so tiny.” Bradley’s amazed voice says, following Beatrice inside the house, “I’ve never seen a dog this small.” Bailey however seemed to take offense because his eyes snapped up to Rooster and the pilot could swear they narrowed when looking up at him.
But when Rooster leaned down to pet his head, the anger dissipated and he leaned on the man’s touch, tapping his back leg on the tiled floor. Rooster grinned, then looked up at the inside of her aunt’s house and that place was spacious. The living room and kitchen were open space, the large windows closest to the big comfortable looking couches were huge and showed the outside - more yard and a pool, albeit much larger than the ones they had at home. There was a family picture hanging on the wall above the fireplace with Martha, her husband and their kids, probably taken a few months back if he wasn’t wrong.
And there were more plants inside and more mystical tiny creatures hanging around. He saw another tiny gnome, this one lying on his side and holding his head up  - on the bookcase right next to him, then more crystals next to it. Beatrice chuckled, watching her fiancé look at everything completely speechless, “When I was younger and used to sleep over, she’d leave a gnome in the room I stayed in for protection,” she explains, tugging him forward to the kitchen where her aunt was, “They always look really old.”
He had to agree, he had only seen these in esoteric shops - places he never entered - so seeing so many up close and almost surrounding him was a bit wild to take in. Her aunt calls them to the kitchen, where she’s pouring some sweet tea in glasses. Now that got his attention, because he did like sweet tea a whole lot but rarely had the time to drink it, “There you go.” her aunt’s calm voice said, offering each of them a glass, “There’s only honey mixed in, are you two hungry?”
“No auntie, we already had lunch.”
Martha nodded, then gestured to the open doors that led to her backyard, “Shall we?” They followed her out of the house onto the immense backyard that looked like a forest the more they looked. If the front yard had a lot of plants, this place was the freaking amazon - was that a treehouse on the corner? Martha’s long dress flowed with the wind as she walked, waiting for them to join her on the white patio table, the large red and white parasol giving them shelter from under the hot sun. “Is the tea to your liking, Bradley? I know you like it.”
He pauses with the glass to his lips, giving her a confused smile but assuming that Beatrice told her about his love for the cold beverage, “It’s really good, ma’am, thank you.” and it was, her aunt had a few slices of lemon inside, albeit darker than normal and he wondered if it was infused with the honey she talked about.
Beatrice grinned, holding his free hand and sipping her own tea “Where’s uncle Seb, auntie?”
“He’s meeting with some investors from Bordeaux, I said there was no need to do it today but he insisted,” she chuckles, waving her hand as if she wasn’t talking about a million dollar investment her wines would get, “And the kids are busy with the hotel, so I am alone today…well, me and Bailey.” she coos looking down at the tiny dog who was sitting by her side.
Beatrice tried to think what would make her aunt want to talk to both of them. Congratulating them was one thing, she could understand that but she could do that over the phone…right? Why would she ask them both to come to her house? It was a bit confusing to her.
“Well, first things first, congratulations to both of you.” Martha smiles, leaning her chin on her interlaced fingers, the young couple sharing a look then facing her, “It is so wonderful to see love blooming like fresh flowers in spring, I am very happy for you. I told your father that too, that soon enough you’d be the one walking that aisle.”
The brunette blinks her eyes confusedly, then tilts her head just a bit in question, “Oh, when you saw my post auntie?”
“No, at my wedding.” her aunt giggles, the corners of her eyes crinkling as she smiles, “I knew it wouldn’t take long.” While it was a sweet thought, Beatrice was once again reminded that it was very possible her family wasn’t normal, especially in the ‘cryptical’ sense.  “Your father didn’t believe me, but he knew it too. Have you two thought about what you’ll do?”
“Well,” Beatrice turned to look at Rooster, giving him a small smile that he reciprocated, “We are still…digesting everything, we have to think about a lot of things and then we’ll figure out a time too.”
Her aunt, however, had a smile on her face that Beatrice could only translate to a Cheshire grin. Like she knew something but was holding back for now, with her cheeks flexing and eyes shining behind the spectacles, nodding almost diminutively, still holding her chin on her interlaced hands, “I see.” she says after a while, “Well, it is something to think about for a while. Are you two planning the wedding this year?”
“We’d like to,” it was Rooster who answered this time, “But like Bea said, we need to work on the time and budget and we took this week to have a mental break before thinking about it for real.”
Martha sips her own glass of sweet iced tea, then leans back on her seat to cross her legs and place her interlaced hands on top of the knee, “That’s a fine choice, it’ll help ease your minds before working on everything.” she then inhales, smiling, “My darlings, there is a reason why I called you two here.” that makes the two look at each other then at her, Beatrice’s aunt never stopped smiling at them, “I love both of you, I know that your presence in our family is recent Bradley, but you make my niece very happy and for that reason…I would like to pay for your wedding.”
Rooster chokes on the tea he was drinking while Beatrice almost drops her glass to the floor - right next to Bailey - in shock. The pilot has a coughing fit that makes him stand up and lean his weight on the back of the white chairs as his fiancé was still looking at her aunt with wide eyes. Martha’s smile only widened, tilting her head in question, “Holy shit…” comes Bradley’s voice once he manages to ease his breathing, “Holy fuck.”
“Auntie…w-what did you say?”
“I said I want to pay for your wedding.” Martha repeats easily, as if she’s telling her niece the weather, “And your honeymoon, of course.”
What the hell.
What the hell!!
Never, in her family, she heard of this happening. She had been to a lot of weddings, she had seen a lot of celebrations, usually - at best - the bride and groom’s families helped a tiny bit but…to pay for everything? Neither of her cousins were married, so Martha and her uncle never actually helped with that, but why…her? Beatrice couldn’t understand and she even voiced it to her aunt, “Well, it is quite simple, I want to.” Martha shrugged, “I talked to your uncle and your cousins and with Rafa and Claudia, and we all agreed it’d be helpful for you.”
Her aunt would never think that she and Rooster wouldn’t be able to handle the expenses of a wedding, she believed in them…then why would she want to pay? It’s not like they were asking for help either, “But…auntie,I don’t…understand, that’s so much money.”
“Yes.”
“And we– you–” Martha’s expression remained the same, “How–why??”
“Well, it’s quite simple besides me wanting to help you.” she says, leaning on a hand with a grin, “You are both similar in different ways and I think that you two deserve a good celebration because of your love. I know you two are capable of making it happen, of course you are, but I think you two deserve something done for you.”
The silence that followed her response was deafening.Beatrice blinked, turning her wide eyes to Bradley’s equally enlarged ones, until the pilot licked his lips and turned to Martha, “Ma’am, we can’t accept that.”
“You don’t deny a gift, Bradley.” she replies in the same calm voice, “I am not asking to be repaid, my sweet boy. I am saying I want to help you because you two deserve it. You deserve a wedding without worries or fear or anxieties. I will not input your choices, I will not make you change your mind, I am just saying that this will be an expense you won’t have to worry about.”
While her aunt made some sense, Beatrice was still trying to wrap her head around it. Why was her aunt so focused on paying it and making sure they had no expenses? Of course that was understandable…but why? Why was her aunt thinking so much about it? Did she know something Beatrice didn’t?
“October will be a good month for you.”
The memory returned after a while, she wasn’t sure why since it had nothing to do with what was going on, but her aunt wanting them to save on their money was…strange. Strange and odd. “I…do you…” Beatrice stands up, “Can you excuse us a moment, auntie?” she takes hold of Bradley’s hand with enough force to tug him away, deeper into the house and into a guest room.
Beatrice has her back to him as she closes the door, turning around to see her fiancé with his hands on his hips, “What just happened?”
“I don’t know.” she whispers, “I-I…what the hell? Did my parents- no they wouldn’t, why would she– I…I am so confused, I need to sit down-” she sits on the bed only to stand up seconds after, “No,I can’t sit down, what the hell, what the hell!!” Beatrice was more stupefied than mad, she was more confused than angry, she had no idea how to react.
Bradley didn’t know either, he knew her aunt was a nice lady and all but…pay for their wedding? And honeymoon? Why? They could pay for it, why would she want them not to? Beatrice paces around the room, wringing her hands together, looking up at him with furrowed brows, “I am speechless Brad,I never–I didn’t…oh God, why would she–”
“Baby, we can take this moment to breathe.” he tries, his own heart hammering on his chest, “Maybe we can…compromise with your aunt? I don’t like the idea of her paying everything.”
“I don’t either but you don’t know my aunt, she’s very generous like that.” she murmurs, “She likes…helping people but I don’t know why– she knows we can do it, then why would she suggest it?” Beatrice was getting a headache thinking about it, rubbing her face with both of her hands until she reaches her hair, tugging it at the roots, “But…maybe the compromise…wait, hold on we need to talk to her about it, Why are we here??”
“You brought us here, babe.”
Beatrice’s big green eyes turned to him, realization dawning over her, “Oh.” she clears her throat then, taking hold of his hand to take him back outside, “Okay, let’s just– come on.”
Martha was still sipping her tea, smiling when they returned, “Hello again.”
“Auntie,I love you but I want to know why you wanna pay for everything.”
Martha shrugged, “I just want to, tesoro.”
“That’s…not an answer.”
Martha lowers the glass to the table, folding her hands on her crossed legs and then smiles more, “What I can say is that…you’ll need the money for other things.” both of them looked at her with confusion, “I cannot elaborate.” Beatrice let go of Rooster’s hand to prop them on her hips, furrowing her eyebrows, still not believing her aunt’s words…until Martha sighed, then smiled, “I have an idea, since you two are a bit resistant to accept it, I’ll pay for the wedding and you two will pay for the honeymoon.”
Beatrice looked up at Bradley, that was an idea that both could…understand honestly, “Only the wedding?” Beatrice questions, to which her aunt nods. The brunette looks back at the pilot, who chews the corner of his mouth thinking on it.
“...I…think I can accept that, a bit weird still.” he says, “That you suggest we do that, honestly.”
“Well,I can tell you two one thing, october will be a great month for you.”
October. Beatrice frowns, “You said it before, can’t you just explain why?” her aunt chuckles softly, then shakes her head, “Oh, fine…then, well…I guess, was that why you wanted us to come? The only reason?”
“Yes, pretty much and because I’d love to have company.” she lifts her glass, “Shall we?”
-
They leave the aunt’s house in silence, still taking the information that Martha was going to pay for their wedding and that it was decided. Bradley was driving one handed since his other hand was holding his chin while Beatrice was supporting her head with her own, leaning on the car’s door, “So much for not thinking about the wedding.” she mutters, sinking deeper on the Bronco’s passenger seat, “I…how are you feeling about all this?”
“Kinda shocked.” he answers quickly, scratching the side of his face, “I do appreciate her saying she knows we can do it but prefers we didn’t, but I don’t get why she wouldn’t want to.” he turns his brown eyes towards her, “Was she always like that?”
Beatrice’s eyes face nothing as she remembers the many times her aunt was cryptic or strange, almost talking in riddles, “...yeah.” she answers with a short laugh, her smile faltering as she looked to the side, “I appreciate it too Roos, but…I dunno, I mean it’s one thing to not worry about I guess. She did say she couldn’t figure out a better wedding gift than that and I am…um…shocked as well.”
It’s one thing to get a nice gift that’d add to your home but to have your rich aunt pay for your wedding was…interesting. She didn’t want to complain, her aunt said she wouldn’t interfere with the decorations or whatever they wanted to do, she just wanted to make sure they’d have the perfect wedding. And then this October thing, again, “Why did she say that about October?”
“I’m not sure.” she replies, “She said that to me again, months back when we were buying stuff for Éowyn, that October would be a great month for us and she couldn’t say more.” she bites her lower lip, chewing on it, “I know she means well, but it was still weird.”
“Yeah…but then again, maybe because she noticed we are a bit,” he moves his hand for emphasis, “All over the place and don’t know what to do, she chose to help?”
That’d make sense honestly. Yeah, that was probably why.
“You are right, well, either way it’ll be used properly you know?” she smiles, the heavy and confused atmosphere turning into a much lighter one, their tense shoulders lowering as Bradley took them home.
When they got to the house, Beatrice’s phone started pinging with messages, one after another. She blinked, holding it up to her eyes when they entered the garage. Evelyn wasn’t really happy to be the last one to know about the engagement and she said - well, more like ordered- the two of them to show up at her place on Sunday so they could have a celebration because of it.
Beatrice sighed, rubbing her forehead and telling Evelyn that while she appreciated it, she and Rooster were still enjoying the downtime. Plus she already had a lot on her mind because of her aunt wanting to pay for their wedding, she needed a mental break from it for right now…that’s why Evelyn told her that they could come on the very next week then and that they had to celebrate one way or another.
Bradley looked back at the brunette who was tapping her phone against her forehead repeatedly, chuckling to himself, ‘Baby,” she stops and sighs, dropping the phone to her lap, “It’s okay, we’ll be fine.”
“My mind is like,” she moves her hands in a circle over her temples, “All over the place Brad…you know what would be really good? Ice cream.”
“Ice cream?” he asks as he steps out of the car to follow her inside, watching her pick up Jolene like a baby when the pittie rushed over to greet them, “I wouldn’t mind it.”
“Actually,” she turns around, still holding the large dog who was now looking at Bradley upside down, “Maybe we should just…” his eyebrow goes up in questioning, “I…I don’t know…just do nothing.”
Rooster’s chest moves when he laughs, the brunette looked absolutely lost on what to do and he couldn’t blame her, honestly he felt a bit drained and confused himself,”I have a much better idea,” he says after tossing his sunglasses to the side, rolling his neck ,”A nap.”
“A nap?”
“Yes, a nap.” he repeats, “I think it might be good to reset our minds. Let’s make this the last things we have to think about the wedding, yeah? Then it’s about enjoying some alone time together, the three of us.” Jolene’s tongue lolled out of her mouth in a doggy smile, “And then, then next week we’re going to step on the gas and worry. Deal?”
“God, yes, please, deal.” she laughs breathlessly, the front of her face hitting his chest - Jolene squished between the two but not at all bothered - smelling his cologne, “I love you,I’m sorry my family is so crazy.”
“I love you too and don’t apologize,” he smiles, kissing the top of her head, “Your family is crazy but it could be worse…have you seen Mav?” Beatrice looks up at him, “He may appear normal now but when I was younger? Crazy shit.”
Beatrice huffs a laugh on his chest, slowly lowering Jolene back to the ground so the pittie could zoom around them. Her now free arms wrapped around his middle, nuzzling the part of his chest that wasn’t covered by the white tee, “I believe you, amazingly.” she whispers, “You never told me much about Mav when you were younger.”
His eyes avoided hers for a second with his lower lip disappearing into his mouth, “I guess I am now at peace sharing it.” he muttered, “You know I was mad at him for a long time, baby.”
‘I know. But you don’t have to share if you don’t want to.”
His smile softened, one of his large hands cupping her soft cheek, “You are going to be my wife,I wouldn’t want to hide anything from you.” he coos, kissing her soft yet grinning lips, ‘But before that, napping. I feel like passing out right here.”

If a member wants to be active in more than one chapter or location, is there anything that would stop that from happening?
In general I believe all modern druid orders (except for perhaps the Celtic Druid Temple) allow for cross-memberships not only between Groves, but between other druid orders and other religious traditions. Within Reformed Druidism you are permitted to be members of the Order and of more than one Grove as well as other druid groups or even of churches, temples, synagogues, hearths, etc.
Usually RDNA Groves and Protogroves tend to be far apart, but I am technically an honorary member of Tucson Protogrove in Arizona because I helped them get started in providing some basic resources and inspiration. Full disclosure: I've never even been to Arizona yet or even met their members, though the latter may change if they plan on attending the 60th Anniversary Reunion at Carleton College Grove on Beltane of 2023. (Mark your calendars, but I digress.)
I could technically found multiple Groves in the Twin Cities metro, having Oakdale Grove represent the Saint Paul side, and establishing a hypothetical Grove for the Minneapolis side (perhaps in the aptly named suburb of Maple Grove, lol). The Groves could operate on skewed schedules to accommodate for more members. Everyone would be welcome to be members of both Groves, or even serve as officers of both, namely as the elected roles of Bard, Server, Preceptor, and Arch-Druid. This would not be viewed as a conflict of interest, and would be perfectly acceptable. However, operationally that's just an awful lot of work.
If there's one exception to this, it's Carleton Grove. They're 45 minutes south of the heart of the Twin Cities, and only students of Carleton College can be voting members or officers. They are the Mother Grove of the RDNA (and their Arch-Druid is the Chairperson of the entire Council of Dalon Ap Landu). Their Grove is also a formally recognized Student Organization at Carleton, listed among the other religious student orgs.
They have to remain insular in a students-only capacity since they receive a budget from Student Activities based on the number of members they have. It's viewed as an understandable technicality, however their members would still be welcome and recognized as members of Oakdale Grove if they wanted to, and met the minimum annual attendance requirements.
In the Seattle area (historically) there was Greenwood Grove and Evergreen Grove. I think Greenwood was of the NRDNA branch (New Reformed Druids of North America: more neopagan) and Evergreen was ZDNA (Zen Druids). There was existing membership crossover, and eventually Greenwood Grove was renamed to Emerald Grove, Emerald absorbed Evergreen, and now Emerald Grove is basic RDNA. That's one of the toughest aspects of Grove history to keep sorted out in the RDNA, especially between the similar names, who changed to what, and especially when is a bit of a gray area. As of the last RDNA census Emerald Grove has 77 members, which is a LOT, and they're a bit secretive about their activities, but they are indeed active. Just not as public as Oakdale Grove or Tucson Protogrove.

It’s a good 20-minute cycle ride to town (bikes are free), but after a day spent chilling on the beach, breaking only for lunch at the Salt Bar or one of its neighbouring sea-facing restaurants, you’ll likely welcome the exercise.
5. Vinh Hung 1 Hotel – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
For a taste of the real Hoi An, this 200-year-old wooden merchant’s house can’t be bettered; exploring its architecture and wandering its rooms, examining in detail its craftsmanship, is a unique treat. All six rooms are sumptuously appointed and filled with antiques and handmade crafts, from furniture to rugs and textiles, but also come with A/C, minibar and luxurious bathroom with bathtub. Guests have the use of the swimming pool at sister hotel, Vinh Hung Riverside Resort & Spa. Graham Greene fans might want to ask for room 208 (featured in the film of The Quiet American).
6. Four Seasons Resort the Nam Hai- The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
A comfortable accommodation will bring a favourable trip. Explore ‘The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels’ with us to choose an interesting place for your vacation!
Styles are equally wide-ranging. Want to stay in a centuries-old Old Quarter wooden town house? You can. At An Bang beach amid a laid back scene of cyclists winding their way through bright green rice fields to town? Plenty there. In a serene spa-based riverfront resort learning how to make lanterns? Lots of Hoi An best places to stay. Staying with a family who will teach you how to propagate orchids and take you to the market for the weekly shop? All these and more made our list; read on to find the one that’s perfect for you.
1. Alsahar Hoi An – THE MIRACLES IN HOI AN
Location: 77/5 Nguyen Duy Hieu, Cam Chau, Hoi An
Tel: 0905 519 971
When talking about a perfect combination of modern and classic, unique Moroccan style and romantic Hoi An Ancient Town, Alsahar Hoi An is one of the few villas that can meet the above criteria. From afar, Alsahar Hoi An impresses visitors by the design of a Moroccan castle. The combination of bright red tiled roofs, emerald green pointed arched doorways on a sandy background creates associations of a distant Mediterranean oasis.
When coming to Alsahar, you are completely immersed in your own world because the house is designed to be separate from the outside environment, extremely quiet and peaceful. In particular, you also treat your body, dispel fatigue with a jacuzzi hydromassage pool and soak in a waterfall pool in the cool, clear green garden of areca trees. The experience is further enhanced by having fun with the flamingos together, sipping some cake and afternoon tea, talking about fun stories and taking a few photos to save memories.
Villa has a total of 7 bedrooms with a maximum capacity of 14-16 people. All rooms have a balcony overlooking the garden and jacuzzi. The special thing is that also from here, you can see the Thu Bon river in the distance. Each room is equipped with a private bathroom, smart TV with Netflix Premium, Free Wifi, an air-conditioner, a ceiling fan and a big wardrobe. In addition, catering services and BBQ party set up are also available. Just contact the reservationist and inform the housekeeper of your plans, the rest is left to the staff to take care of you.
2. Alamnity Hoi An – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
Could this be the most relaxed hotel in central Vietnam? Quite possibly. It claims to have the biggest spa, after all. This and 140 elegantly decorated rooms with platform beds, minibars and all mod cons are set in tropical gardens that take in a saltwater pool as well as an organic garden providing produce for the restaurant, which serves Asian and Italian food. A range of complimentary activities includes the obvious (steam room, sauna, gym, bike) to the imaginative (fish-feeding, Vietnamese lessons, art exhibitions and herbal tea meditation) via the unexpected but welcome (daily 60-minute spa treatment and yoga sessions). Faultless.
3. Anantara Hoi An Resort – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
Right on the Thu Buon river, this low-slung traditional boutique hotel Hoi An and spa is a beauty, and like the Almanity, celebrates local culture with a range of activities – including lantern-making and traditional Chinese painting. Colonial-style rooms, some with sleigh or platform beds, are all dark wood and white linens, and fronted with a seating area and private porch looking onto the garden or river. A gorgeous pool area, spa with steam rooms and hammam, and various outdoor and indoor eateries add to the appeal, as does the good location – it’s just a five-minute walk to the Old Quarter.
4. Beachside Boutique Resort – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
This funky little four-star hotel facing the beach at An Bang has heaps going for it, from beautiful tiling and colourful decor to individually decorated marine-themed rooms centred around a pretty pool area, and a great breakfast served in a boho beach bar opposite. Staff are special too, going way beyond the call of duty to make your stay perfect.
It would be churlish not to include the Four Seasons here; after all, its style, services and amenities are legendary. So if what you’re after is an all-singing, all-dancing bells and whistles stay in a beautiful contemporary Asian-style villa surrounded by powdery-sand beach, three pools, watersports centre, fine-dining restaurants and elegant bars, this won’t disappoint. Unless you’re here to experience the real Vietnam; for that, stay in a locally owned place where the service won’t be as efficient, but will be just as enthusiastic and warm. And for the price of one night here, you can have five in one of them.
7. Hoi An Chic Hotel – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
If the beach is too far from the action and the bustle of Hoi An too much for you, this little spot 2km away from both could be the perfect half-way house. Set amid vibrant rice fields, the homely building contains rooms that mix traditional with contemporary in delightful ways, pepping up dark woods with bright textiles and cushions. All include a balcony and free daily minibar consumption. Bikes are free too (as are the locally made sun hats and shopping bags), but if negotiating Hoi An’s crazy traffic is too daunting, the free shuttle service in a US jeep should do the trick.
8. Little Hoi An – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
Just across the river from Hoi An, this boutique river-facing hotel has a great location – within steps of the Old Quarter, but in the much quieter and hipper area of An Hoi. It’s a small and very polished affair, its 30 rooms and suites singing with traditional crafts; from the tiles on the floor to the fretworked dark wood, art and bright textiles, the spaces, all with river or town views and balconies, celebrate the crafts of Hoi An but come with all mod cons, including free iPad use and video rental. There’s a small spa and covered pool too.
9. Hoi An Odyssey Hotel – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
Just walking into the bright lobby of this hotel, filled with colourful lanterns and tropical flowers, is a delight – as is the location, at the confluence of the Thu Bon river on laidback Cam Nam island. The year-round outdoor pool and sun terrace are peaceful spots to plan your day and rooms are nicely furnished; all come with A/C and a minibar, while some have pool or river views. The free bikes are great for getting to and around town, and for a day at the seaside, a shuttle bus connects the hotel with its private beach.
10. Life Beach Villa – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
With its gaily-painted blue woodwork, poured concrete or brightly tiled floors and a funky contemporary meets handmade aesthetic, this little beach hotel is a seaside treat. All ten rooms are individually decorated so you might find yours has exposed bricks, wicker lampshade, mezzanine sleeping platform or bamboo ladder, but whatever you find it will be as charming and personal as the service. The nice little pool area with loungers is great for chilling out after a day in town – for longer kick-back sessions, lovely An Bang beach is just two minutes’ walk.
11. Santa Villa Hoi An – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
Just south of the lively heart of An Bang at Tan Thanh beach, this  modern four-storey corner building with balconies or terrace is much loved by its visitors, not least for the warmth and helpfulness of the staff. The free breakfast and bikes are winners too, as is the swimming pool and sense of tranquillity once the day ends. Rooms are bright and modern (some come with kitchenettes), and as is common in the beach area, marine-themed; we like the Captain’s room, which comes with sea view, but would happily settle for the fisherman’s room at just US$59 a night.
12. Hoi An Orchid Garden Hotel – The 12 Best Hoi An Hotels
If you want to experience a traditional Vietnamese homestay with a difference, this won’t disappoint – particularly if you’re a fan of orchids. Set amid tropical gardens with a swimming pool and tranquil countryside setting just outside the old town, the well-appointed bungalows with kitchens are great for families and anyone keen to learn about Vietnamese culture; join the owners on a trip to the market, help prepare meals and learn about Vietnamese cooking, or learn how to propagate and care for orchids –  the orchid garden here boasts 100 species and 20 hybrids. Bikes and breakfast are included.

Full Moon In Alpha
this is based on @target-block‘s stuck au, go check them out!
He’s more than worried, the potion that he always kept on him having disappeared from his inventory with the rest of his things. He needs that potion, though he knows he won't be able to brew it until they get that update, though the full moon is tonight. He hasn’t made any preparations, he needs to get going before night gets too close and he puts Impulse and Grian in danger.
Still, Ren stands calmly outside the small wheat farm that he made, watching as the wheat grows slowly, and the grass-like plant dances in the wind. It’s calming here, not nearly as calming as the small room under the ocean that Doc built for him, all glass and stone and safety, hiding him away from the moon and the other hermits.
But here is as good as it can be, Ren supposes, a faint smile fluttering across his lips. Grian walks by, wood planks in his hands, humming a tune to himself that Ren recognises but doesn’t remember. It’s surprisingly fast, how many memories that end up smudged, faded over time. Friends faces, song names, words that fall on the tip of your tongue. Ren should remember Doc’s face, Xisuma’s favourite song, the soup False makes for the hippies and the area 77 boys when they get too sick to cause mischief. And he can, in theory. Words he would describe Doc’s face as appear, a few bars of notes that Xisuma taught him, the taste of mushrooms in the soup. It hurts, remembering home, though it hurts more to forget. Forgetting is painful, hard to wrap his head around, so he doesn’t. Instead, he brushes his hair absentmindedly, combing his fingers through the thick, tangled messes. It’s thicker than usual, and Ren knows that he’ll need to leave soon, before the sun sets and it’s too hard to excuse his disappearance to his fellow hippies. Before the moon comes out.
“Hey Ren!” Impulse calls, watching him from the door of their little cabin. “Are you going to come in yet? It looks like it’s going to rain, and the sun’ll set soon!”
“Uh, can I take a walk my dudes?” Ren calls back, trying to keep the panic out of his voice. Grian laughs from inside the cabin, and Ren curses himself. He should have left earlier, before Grian was back.
“Do you want to get torn apart by a zombie?” Grian asks, and Impulse grabs Ren’s shoulder, pulling him towards the building. “You know how hard night is now, you can’t go out!”
“How about tomorrow?” Impulse suggests, shoving Ren through the door. “We can all go out tomorrow morning. Find some flowers, you know?”
“There are only roses and dandelions, Impulse.”
“I know Grian.”
“Roses hurt, Impulse.”
“I know Grian.” Impulse sighs. “Still, it’ll be nice, you know? Relaxing.”
“Sleep should do that though.” Grian yawns. “Anyone want some steak? The roof is repaired, by the way. I put some torches up there so we should have anymore creepers spawning up there.”
Impulse takes a steak off of Grian, handing it to Ren before he takes one for himself. Ren holds it in his hands, fear turning his stomach into knots. He can feel his mouth water at the smell, and his teeth sharpen painfully in his mouth, cutting into his cheeks and tongue as they grow in a space too small for them. It’s going to be a painful night, Ren knows that much. Ren turns the steak over in his hands, his nails sharpening to claws. He’s turning, earlier than normal, and fur pokes painfully under his skin.
“Uh, Ren?” Grian’s voice is quiet, and Ren’s head snaps to the small hermit, his pupils blown. “What’s going on?”
Impulse moves in front of Grian, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. None of them would ever attack the other, but Ren looks like he isn’t there, isn’t in control. Ren snarls at the men before a scream rips from his throat, his bones breaking and elongating in painful contortions. Fur springs out from under his skin and his pupils dilate so far that his eyes are black. Grian and Impulse shout, Grian quickly building a barricade between the now wolf Ren and the two very human hippies.
“Grian.”
“Yeah?”
“Since when was Ren a werewolf?”
“HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT IMPULSE I ONLY JOINED THIS SEASON?” Grian yells, panic written across his face. “What do we do? How do we help him?”
“What if he doesn’t want our help? He can’t tell us if we’re hurting him or helping him, how are we supposed to let him know that we want to help?” Impulse and Grian both take a deep breath in, trying to calm themselves.
“I’m going out there. Maybe all we have to do is open the door for him, so that he can get out safely?” Grian doesn’t sound sure, as though he doesn’t know if its a good idea.
“And let him get shot? Lets just give him some hugs and then head off to bed.” Impulse suggests, and Grian nods, breaking the wood blocks that are barricading them into the corner.
Ren is curled on the ground, thick, long brown fur hiding the bed underneath him. He’s huge, larger than any dog that Impulse and Grian have ever seen and the two humans coo, surprising Ren, who looks up at them, tilting his head to the side. Grian walks over to Ren, his hands out in front of him, and Ren sniffs them before his tail starts to wag uncontrollably. Impulse coos, walking over and letting Ren sniff his hands as well. Grian and Impulse grin, happy that their friend feels somewhat comfortable.
“Doggo.” Grian mumbles, his hands over his mouth. “Ren’s a doggo.”
Ren boofs loudly, and Impulse and Grian burst into laughter, losing their minds as Ren boofs again, nudging Impulse. Impulse lifts his hand up, cocking his head to the side. Ren presses his head against Impulse’s hand, and Impulse begins to scratch at the spot that his hand landed on. Grian yawns, trying to find the bed under Ren, wondering why Ren decided to sit on his bed instead of Ren’s own bed. Impulse laughs at Grian’s dilemma, and Grian sighs, deciding instead to flop against Ren. Impulse joins Grian soon after, and the three hippies fall asleep like that, dreaming peacefully for what feels like the first time since they arrived in Alpha.

You OK, bro?
Grontz entered the engine room and instantly sensed the tension. Farther down the hall, and behind several bulkheads ominous sounds rang out. It was a mixture of dull thumps, metallic clangs and the distinct guttural grunts of human swearing. Various techs gave their undivided attention to their duties, conversations were conducted in hushed whispers.
"Grontz! Thank the 77 Celestials you're here!" Chief Kloop exclaimed as they approached. The head of security waited for the gelatinous mechanic to get closer. Grontz was bemused at the situation. She received a report that a human had gone into full war berserk. This was likely an exaggeration, human and Oorqus capacity for violence terrified other Alliance members.
"War berserk, Chief?" Grontz prompted.
"The human started behaving violently." Kloop answered. "He started ripping the panels from the walls with his bare hands. In the process he cut his hands. Instead of passing out into a healing coma, the injury seemed to increase his destructive behavior. When humans bleed, they enter a state of murderous rage. It is known."
"It is known." Crew members whispered in unison. Grontz pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Kloop," She began with a sigh. "I've seen out of control human violence. If that had happened, this room would be spattered with your insides. This is a mild temper tantrum." With that pronouncement, staff hurriedly shuffled out of Engineering. Good. They just would have been in the way. A staccato rhythm of crashes and swearing echoed loudly.
"Gunter, buddy" Chief of Security leaned her 3 meter frame against the bulkhead closest to the source of destruction. Tools and broken ship parts were strewn around. "You're freaking everybody out."
"Well I'm sorry 10 days of 12 hour shifts doesn't have me singing songs and dancing for joy!" A flat smack of flesh on metal made Grontz wince; the accompanying profanity made her chuckle.
"Nah" She replied and made her way over to a refreshment station.
"Whaddaya mean, 'Nah'?" The grumpy engineer emerged from the wreckage rubbing his forehead.
"I mean," She handed him a canteen of water. "You work consecutive shifts all the time. Doc has to put you on medical furlough to keep you outta here sometimes."
"We're on the last leg of this trip. Everything is breaking, we don't have the supplies we need to do our job."
"Pbbbbt" was the non-verbal "raspberry" of derision. "Bull, you love human-rigging everything."
"I'm not a miracle worker! That's too much to expect!" He replied heatedly. He tried to hand the canteen back.
"Drink it all." She pushed the water back at the human. The human sighed.
"Chief Kloop relies on mythical human ingenuity to the point of routinely asking for the impossible." Gunter finished the water and looked around. "Jeez, I really made a mess of this place."
"Chief say something to set all this off?" Grontz asked, waving to the mess with one hand.
"Yes. No! Well, sort of. Not really." Gunter started to stammer. Grontz just looked at him with one eyebrow arched. "Aw man...I completely over reacted. I should apologize."
"What did they say?"
"They asked me to degauss the plasma field again."
"He asked you to perform a routine duty?" She leveled a flat stare at him. Anyone else in the crew would have quivered in terror before that look. Gunter just looked embarrassed.
"It was the third time this shift! These solar flares are playing hell with all the systems." The longer his justification went on, the smaller his voice became.
"Tell me Gunter, do you have any food allergies?"
"Uh...no." He was confused and suspicious of the off topic question.
"Here." She gave him a candy bar. "Cordon off the area, clean it up next shift. For now: sleep, hydrate and maintain your blood sugar better.

You’d had a fucking horrible day.
Who’d have thought that a bunch of lawyers could be that rowdy? And of course none of them tipped.
The only thing that could maybe make it better was the thought of seeing your wonderful, fluffy boyfriend at the end of the night. You let out a satisfied sigh when you saw his Range Rover parked in front of your apartment.
You pulled into the garage and threw it into park, fighting the urge to run inside and pounce on him.
“Hey honey!” He called over the back of the couch when you came inside. “How was your night?”
“Fucking rough!” You called back, heading to the fridge. “You want a beer?”
“I’m good.” He said, holding up his open bottle as you headed into the living area, sinking beside him on the couch as you took a sip of your beer. “Wanna talk about it?”
“Just a bunch of corporate assholes from Boston who didn’t tip.” You said with a tired sigh, taking another swig of beer.
“Shit, I’m sorry baby.” He murmured, scooting closer to you and setting his bottle on the coffee table. “You need anything?”
“I just wanna relax, babe.” You said, chugging the rest of your beer and setting your own bottle beside his and leaning against him.
“I think I can help with that.” He said with a smile before drawing you even closer. “Why don’t you come here, baby, and let daddy take care of you?”
“Daddy?” You asked with a sigh as he started to rub your shoulders.
“No good?” He asked as he started to run his lips over your neck, his hands moving to unbutton your blouse.
“No, I can work with it. Shit!”
He had unbuttoned your jeans and shoved his hand down the front of your panties, his other hand wrapped around your throat as he spread you apart with his fingers.
“Fuck, you’re already so wet for me baby.” He growled softly into your hair. “Tell me what you like, honey. Daddy wants to treat you so good.”
“Mmm, Daddy.” You whined as he sucked a bruise against your neck while his fingers pressed against your jugular, his hand between your legs still rubbing over your pussy in big circles. “Love it when you fuck me from behind with that big cock of yours while you play with my tits.”
“Shit, you want daddy’s cock baby?” He growled softly, grinding his hips against your ass to show you how hard he was.
“Yes, please daddy. Wanna feel your cock in my pussy so bad.” You muttered, wiggling your ass against him.
“Damn, take off your jeans.” He hissed, shoving you forward on the couch so he could slip out of his sweats.
You obliged quickly, tossing your jeans and panties aside before drawing your heels under your ass and waiting. You felt Andy shift on the sofa until he was kneeling behind you. He wrapped a hand around you and dragged you back until your back was flush against his chest.
Andy brought a hand between the two of you to wrap around his cock and line himself up. His other hand drew your thighs apart as he lined himself up and drew you back into his length, making you moan.
“What a good girl.” He murmured into your hair as he started snapping his hips against your ass, the sounds of flesh slapping together filling your living room. “Taking daddy’s cock so good in that tight pussy. So goddamn warm and perfect.”
You leaned back against him as he fucked into you, your head rolling lazily on his shoulder as he brought his hands up to draw your breasts out of your bra.
“Fuck, daddy!” You whined as he started playing with your nipples, his hips starting to move faster.
A particularly forceful thrust had his cock nudging against your cervix and you screamed, your pussy fluttering around him wildly as you came apart. He had to hold you up as your body bowed backwards against him, trying to arch up off the couch.
He groaned into your hair and bent you forward suddenly, curling over your back as he started thrusting into you even faster. You felt him twitch inside you as he neared his release.
“Please daddy, I want you to come inside me. Want you to fill me up.” You whined, shoving a hand between your legs to circle your clit desperately as you felt another orgasm looming.
“Fuck honey, I’m gonna do it. Fill that pretty pussy up so good.” He grumbled before his hips stilled and he shot his load into you at the same time you came, your cunt milking his cock for all he could give you as the two of you collapsed on top of each other.
You smiled lazily as you came down, feeling Andy’s breath coming in deep sighs as he laid on top of you.
“Shit, I don’t think you’ve ever come that fast before.” He murmured into your hair before straightening up over you.
“Nope.” You said, your face still pressed against the sofa cushions. “That was so good.”
“Yeah?” He said before scooping you up and pressing a kiss to your forehead. “Told you I’d take good care of you.”

The Poultry Man Chronicles Masterpost (INCOMPLETE)
Grian/Poultry Man
Has a small pack under his shirt that springs out into wings (wears it at ALL times, even in civilian form)
Uses magic eggs from his pet Sally to fight crime (and maybe cause some of it)
Very protective about his identity
Major crush on Mumbo
Reluctant alliance with Duckwoman
Sally
Grian's pet chicken
Ate a nether star while unsupervised and now produces eggs with different effects (smoke bombs, potionesque upgrades, etc)
Kept secret from the other hermits
Dumb as a brick but protective of Grian
Iskall
The first and only one to find out Grian's identity
Upgraded Poultry Man's wings from gliders into real functional wings
Covers Grian from suspicion
Patches him up after rough fights
Mumbo
The MJ to Grian's Spider-Man
Doesn't suspect a thing (both romance wise and super-alias wise)
Started to catch feelings for Poultry Man which put a road bump in Grian and Mumbo's friendship for a bit bc Grian couldn't reveal he was Poultry Man
Very sus to be Poultry Man, but is just always in the wrong place at the wrong time
Stress/Duckwoman
Friendly rivalry with Poultry Man
Duck themed getup is just because she likes ducks, her abilities are unrelated
Creates components for crime fighting in her Lab from the Amythest that grew over her beacon, including but not limited to an ice ray gun
The more time she spends near the infected beacon, the more powerful she gets. If the beacon is destroyed however, she loses it all, even her inventions
On good terms with Grian in civilian form
Villains
The Minotaur: Poultry Man's arch nemesis. Hates Poultry Man for his crimes to bovine-kind and wants to eradicate him
Doctor Cyber: Docm77's secret identity. Attempts to capture Poultry Man "for Hermitville's own safety" and lock him in Area 77 for his abilities
The Jingler: Unknown identity. Notorious prankster of Hermitville, a bit more ruthless in this AU. Traps hermits and robs them if they get the chance.
Info
This AU is set in Season 6, obviously
Iskall found out about Grian's identity after walking in on him changing out of the Poultry Man suit in the Sahara meeting room
Scar, being co-founder of Area 77, is Doc's "man in the chair", sending him intel on suspicious activity on the server while Doc is out on the field
Grian still has his detective business in this AU
Zedaph is retired hero Worm Man. There's no relevance of this to the plot as of yet but it's still good to know
Poultry Man has nicknamed all of the villains except The Jingler
Cleo and Cub still run the Hermiton Herald, and are very nosy into all of the super's business to figure out who they are
Hilariously, the top theory of who Poultry Man's identity really is is Mumbo. Poor guy is just always in the wrong place at the wrong time
(Unrelated to lore) There are 5 planned issues of this AU in my drafts, I'm treating it literally as a comic book. I haven't illustrated anything other than sketches yet but it is a long standing ambition of mine to make this a webcomic

Ohhh we could even spin an au as Grian being an alt of Sparklez. Because Sparklez, and Spark both have glowing/fiery connotations, and Grian means sun in Irish. Also Grian is technically a Lord and that's a title as are Admiral and Captain, sooo. And Grian has the end and watcher associations we've discussed, but also his Hermitcraft S6 main and starter bases were a sunken ship wreck in a bottle (oh captain wink wink), and a giant tower in the ocean. His Evo base was a stone castle on a island in the sea (technically it was a large lake but shh) and also a giant half submerged arch base.
Back to Hermitcraft, in S6 he had a mad scientist arc with a time machine and infiltrated a military base, area 77 to save his villager who was in his time machine. (Andor in prison parallels) and his Village Base had a dragon perched on the top. He also was in a prank war against other hermits (Jordan in the prank war in Mianite) and played in a death game called demise (kinda like a purge if you squint) and again more dragon associations with the dragon bros in demise. Also S7 he had the barge, and another war, the turf war. And S7 he had a jungle starter base and Jordan has the jungle base associations.
Also Grian and Jordan both have a friend who's a zombie (Zombiecleo, fellow hermit and fought in the S6 war with Grian but not as close as Tom and Jordan). And have a wizard friend, (Scar/Wag), and a plain human friend (Mumbo/Tucker) and have a good friend whose got animal ears/tail (Rendog/Sonja).
Oh also Grian and Jordan both have emotional support pets in their respective series. (Jordan has Dog/darkness cat in Mianite, Grian has Professor Beak the parrot/pesky bird)
....holy shit? oh my god grian's a jordan alt

Rain Plays SWTOR: Solo Macrobinoculars (most of it), Imperial side, Pt. 2
I'm back with Part II of the Solo Macrobinoculars Run. To reiterate, I knew going in that I would not be able to complete the entire chain, but I'm writing a guide on the parts of the quest that can be soloed. This site does not like links, so to find part 1 please click on the #swtor macrobinoculars tag.
Where we left off, I'd just finished scanning targets on Belsavis, and we were ready to hit the Rakatan temple.
A Spy's Secret: Belsavis
How to get there: if you scanned the target in the Tomb last, you are actually positioned really well to get to the next part of the mission. If not, take the Rakatan Transport to the Lower Prison Magma Transport stop and then make your way out into the Tomb area.
In the front room, the order for making the grid go away is: 1. Click the third panel. 2. Click the fourth panel. 3. Kill the droids. 4. Click the two things on the sides of the walls above the power generator. 5. Click the fourth panel again. 6. Turn so that you are facing the Rakatan Transporter and look up. There's a clickable near the ceiling. Click it. The grid will go down. At the second grid: 1. Slow down. In my experience, the second (deadly) laser grid did not load right away with the rest of the room, so Viri ran right into it. 2. You have to click the wall panel five times. Once to open it; the rest to input the code. You will see the panels light up with the colors as you add them.  3. The code is Red, Green, Yellow, Green.
Tumblr media
In the Cryoban tank area:  1. Click the tanks and manage the pipes ONE AT A TIME. You need to click the tank, follow the white smoke coming out of the pipes on the ceiling and click on the ceiling junctions ONCE each to route the cryoban to the door to break it down. When the door weakens enough you can click on the pipe right above it, and then the door itself.
The first time I tried this I blithely opened all the tanks and found myself completely unable to figure out which pipes I'd done, which I hadn't, and how the hell to extricate myself from the mess I'd created. I ended up resetting this part of the mission (which meant scanning all three targets on Belsavis again). Learn from me. :(
The final boss here is relatively easy, but it made me sad he was Ortolan. I kind of hated killing him.
Tumblr media
Now, it's time to scan more targets. A lot of these are in really obvious places, on top of major landmarks. Alderaan
- QT to Thul Research Camp. - QT to Outpost Talarn. - QT to Thul Supply Camp, and then go south. It's in the heart of the Republic gameplay area but you can avoid pretty much all combat if you are careful about where you walk/speed. - QT to Panteer Hideout. The target is on the Panteer castle, you can scan easily from the bridge while you're still surrounded by friendly NPCs rather than wading into enemy NPC territory.
Balmorra
- The first target is right in the middle of Sobrik, where you come in on the planet. If you didn't do this one first, the closest QT point is the Sunken Sarlacc Cantina. - QT to Bugtown. - QT to Markaran Imperial Outpost. The target is on the Okara Droid Factory building so you can get it from a considerable distance. - QT to Sundari Imperial Outpost. It's on a building of the Balmorran Arms Factory that is against the rocks so it's hard to see the target from a distance, but it's scannable well before you reach the factory.
Voss
- QT to Ghen's Outlook. Your target is actually on the building tower on the base, so you just need to get a little ways away to scan it. - QT to Pilgrim Retreat. The target you're scanning is right on top of the Shrine of Healing, so as soon as you can see the Shrine from the road, you should be able to get your scan. - QT to Outpost Skyline. The target is in the heart of the Gormak Lands, so it's a bit of a schlep. It's on top of the canopy in the area that marks the entrance to the Gormak Lands. - QT to Outpost Overseer, and just hop on the main road. It's on the top of the Gormak arch.
At the end of this scanning mission, IR-77 will pay you another ambush visit, stronger than before.
Tumblr media
Nar Shaddaa
- QT to Keeling's Listening Post. If you don't have that one, the Corellian Sector. - QT to the Slippery Slope Cantina, which is the closer of the two QT points on the Promenade. -- QT to the Imperial Data Center, shuttle to Network access or pick up the heroic Hunger of the Vrbithers and use the provided transport. Be aware that even if you are not doing the heroic,  you will likely have to contend with enemy vrbither NPCs as you move to the scanning point.
All the Pieces - Nar Shaddaa
This is the last bit you will be able to do solo, and it's quite a grand finale. To get there, QT to Network Security Access.
The first obstacle is a group of four gold droids. You should be able to beat them, but it's a reminder that the next sections are intended for groups.
To beat the two discs on the floor, stand on them one by one. Put your companion to passive so they are standing with you. The discs will eventually explode and the door will open.
On the dock, every enemy NPC droid is gold, so try not to pull them all at once. Force pushing them off the platform does not work; they will return.
Tumblr media
Now your character will get to pretend they're in an action movie and recreate that sequence where Anakin Skywalker jumped out of the speeder into Coruscant traffic! This is a jumping puzzle like no other, and it's long. You will be jumping from speeder to speeder in heavy Nar Shaddaa traffic. What's that you said? Why didn't your character just commandeer a speeder instead of doing this? Shhhh. Jumping puzzle time.
You will likely die at least once while attempting it. Probably far more often. The good news is that there are three save points along the way. As long as you've reached these points, you will not need to do the entire puzzle again. You can hop on the speeder and just speed to the save point. If you die on the last boss, you'll be taken back to the beginning, but again, you can hop on those three speeders, one after the other, to get back to the boss.
Tumblr media
With the jumps, if you don’t see a car close to you- wait. A lot of the time the vehicle you need to jump on will pull up along side. Sometimes they will be so close that you don't even have to jump, you can just drop.
Rocket boosts can be useful in a few places but be careful, it's very, very easy to overshoot these jumps and fall to your death.
Tumblr media
For a few jumps, you're actually going to use grapples. Mouse around on the larger ships that are too far away to jump and they may have a grappling hook you can click.
Take your time. The traffic is rushing beneath you, but you can take all the time you need to figure out the safe jumps. If the vehicle you need has veered away wait, it will come back.
At a few points (the save points near the speeders) you will face gold and silver mobs. If you're soloing this with your companion, it will be difficult. I ended up throwing Heroic Moment at the last one.
IR-77 will greet you after you defeat the final mob, and he'll be ready to destroy you. He has a knockback, which really isn't a pleasant prospect when you're on a moving, narrow platform. Be prepared for it and try to dispatch him as quickly as possible.
Tumblr media
Once you reach the large skiff, you will face Maki'Voro. It's a challenging fight and he doesn't go down easily. He has a very wicked knockback, so try to make sure you're angled so that he can't knock you over the edge. You will know he's about to throw it when he suddenly flies into the air.
I ignored the adds, with the exception of the nanodroid shield froid that appears over Maki'Voro's head. This droid has a potent heal, so you need to interrupt it and destroy it ASAP.
After Maki'Voro has been destroyed, you have reached the end of the Macrobinoculars quest line that you can solo. The final H4 requires four players because there are four panels you have to stand on simultaneously.
I really hope that SWTOR's devs will consider adjusting this final H4 so it can be soloed, especially since it seems that only one part of it specifically requires multiple players. They pulled an Oricon here, since everything except the last H4 is soloable. I knew going in that I would not be able to finish the quest line, but I'm guessing a lot of people who begin it do not have that knowledge. It's a very well designed questline with interesting gameplay and story, and it's a shame that solo players can't finish it. If Bioware really wants the content to be played and enjoyed, forcing grouping is perhaps not the best way to achieve that goal.
In the meantime, if you're like me and really hate grouping, you can still get a lot of interesting gameplay out of this mission chain. You just can't finish it. If you've played Shroud of Memory you know what happens to the Shroud, so perhaps, like me, you can try to incorporate that into your own headcanon to fill in the blanks of the mission you can't do.

Undercover (Javier x Reader) {MTMF}
Title: Undercover  Rating: PG-13 Length: 2600 Warnings: None. Notes: You can find the Maybe Today, Maybe Forever Timeline here. Set after Old Parr in 1989.
This is the car I envision, but with the top down. The newspaper situation mentioned relates to this attack. Also if you know who my personal headcanon for Reader is, then you might enjoy knowing that this is my headcanon for Elena because of this (don’t click until after you read the story). Valeria is obviously the character in Narcos, but the real reporter was Virginia Vallejo and she wrote this memoir which she accused Narcos of stealing from.
If you’ve been following all of the drama that’s been going on, and have something you want to say anonymously to me you should read this post.
Summary: Reader and Steve go undercover.

Horacio looked between you and Steve, before settling Javier with a disapproving looking. “We’re sending the gringos?” He questioned, annoyance written on his face. “He can’t even speak the language.”
Javier cleared his throat, his hands on his hips. “She can speak it pretty damn proficiently.” He nodded his head towards you, a faint smile playing across his lips.
“Hey now,” Steve huffed, crossing his arms across his chest. “I can understand enough of the language to get by.”
You shot him a look. “Ordering drinks isn’t enough, Steve.”
“Why aren’t they sending you?” Horacio questioned, arching a brow at Javier.
Javier rubbed at the back of his neck, his gaze flickering towards you briefly. “Well—“
You interrupted, “We got the intel from one of Javier’s friends.”
“What she means is,” Steve started. “One of his hookers.”
“Listen, Elena is a sweet girl in a bad situation.” Javier explained. “She’s in deep with the cartel.”
“Which is how we know about this party,” You explained. “But there’s supposed to be a few of Javier’s friends there. We can’t risk being recognized.”
“They’re used to it.” Javier pointed out with a shrug. “Discretion is a part of their job.”
“Sure.” You shot him a look, “They’ll be all over you and you know it.”
“Jealous?” Javier shot back.
You rolled your eyes, “You wish.”
He looked to Steve then, jaw set tight. “How’s Mrs. Murphy gonna feel about this?” Javier questioned, drawing a line between you and Steve.
“She knows.” Steve batted Javier’s hand away.
“Oh, fuck off Javi.” You sneered at Javier, stepping past him and moving towards your desk. “Carrillo, just consider this the overture to the real fun. With any luck, Steve and I will glean more information from the guests and we’ll find what Escobar intends to do next.”
“And what’s your cover story?”
Steve tucked his hands into his pockets, “Drug traffickers.”
“We’ve picked up where Jung left off.” You explained, your gaze flickering towards Javier as he watched you tuck a knife into the holster you had strapped to your thigh beneath your dress. You couldn’t carry a gun, but at least you’d have a little protection. “Steve’s cover is Richie Simmons. A name ‘known’ in the trafficking world.”
“Elena’s going to cover for them.” Javier offered, crossing his arms across his chest as he lifted his gaze back to your face. “Verify their story.”
“An old friend of mine.” You explained as you smoothed your hands over your dress, “She’ll corroborate everything.”
Horacio looked thoroughly unimpressed. “Or we send Search Bloc in—“
“No.” Javier cut him off, jaw clenched tight as he shook his head. “There are good people attending this shit. It’s not worth it.”
A lot could be said about Javier and his hookers, but one thing that always stood out to you was the fact he wanted to make sure they were safe. Elena was risking her wellbeing and livelihood as an informant. One wrong move and it could easily be over for her.
Horacio’s eyes flickered between the three of you, lips pressed into a thin line. “We’ll have units posted up on the street. First sign of trouble,” He looked at you then. “You pull out.”
You nodded your head, moving back towards Javier’s desk where a map of the area was spread out across it. “The extraction point is here.” You pointed to a spot that was a few hundred yards from a dirt road. “If anything goes sideways we’ve got a signal.”
Javier rubbed at the back of his neck as he stepped in beside you, looking down at the map. “Be careful in there.”
You tilted your head to look at him, “You know I will.” You shifted closer to him, nudging him in the ribs with your elbow. “Want me to tell the girls you say hello?”
He rolled his eyes.
Steve clapped his hands together, “Ready to get this show on the road?”
You crossed your arms across your chest as you turned around to face him. “Whatever you want, Richie.” You said with a teasing lilt, holding your hand out for Steve to take. “Wait five, then follow.” You told Javier.
“I know what I’m doing.” He shot back, not quite meeting your eyes. He’d been in such a weird mood since the planning began on this mission. It wasn’t a bad mood, but it wasn’t a good mood either. You didn’t let it get under your skin though. Javier had his moments.
“See you out there.” Steve said, clapping Javier on the shoulder, before the two of you headed for the elevator.
“Is it just me or does Javi have a weird vibe today?” You questioned as you leaned back against the back of the elevator, arms crossed across your chest.
Steve shrugged, “You know how he gets whenever we’ve got a joint operation.”
“Fair point.” You pursed your lips. “At least it’s Carrillo and not the CIA.”
He chuckled, “He’d be spitting venom if that were the case.”
You swept your fingers through your hair, following Steve towards the ‘77 LeBaron. “If I’d known we’d be cruising over in a convertible, I wouldn’t have put an effort into my hair.”
“Gotta arrive in style.” Steve remarked as he started the car up, “Purrs like a kitten.”
“It’s a damn good car.” You mused as you settled into the passenger's seat, glancing back at the DEA building in the rearview mirror.
There was a part of you that wished you were going undercover with Javier. You could picture him cruising beside you in the LeBaron, aviators one as you drove west towards the setting sun.
Though, at least with Steve you’d be focused on the mission at hand.
 ————
The estate was about an hour outside of Bogotá. You and Steve arrived just as the last light dipped below the horizon. The heavily armed guards at the gate let you in after a brief search of the car and a pat-down to assure that neither of you were armed.
The LeBaron had been the perfect choice of wheels. It fit in nicely among the other convertibles along the curved drive and it earned both of you a little attention from the other guests.
Elena was quick to greet you. Hugging you like an old friend despite the fact that you had only met her once a few weeks back in a rundown motel room after a weekend spent with Javier.
She playfully tried to get you to join her in the solarium with the women, helping you to establish the fact that Steve didn’t speak the language as well as you did. You shared barbs about his incompetence — earning a few amused chuckles from the men who were eavesdropping.
Steve played the part well. He made a snarky comment about the fact that he assumed you were both talking about him, which you quickly soothed away with playful cajoling.
Elena introduced you to some of the other guests, making a point to introduce Steve to the ones who at least spoke broken English, if not proficiently. They were all deeply invested in the drug business — and Steve did well at boasting about his own enterprise. Most of the men saw right through his gusto, realizing that you were the brains of the operation. Just as you’d planned.
Eventually, you had to part ways with Steve as the gentlemen made plans to smoke cigars in the lounge while business was discussed. “Just sit and look pretty.” You teased Steve, leaning up to press a kiss to his cheek as you smoothed out the wrinkles in his linen suit, before you followed Elena and the other women into the solarium.
Most of the women were wives, but as Elena had warned you ahead of time, most of them had been hired for the evening. It never made sense to you why drug lords trusted women who were so easily convinced to become informants — but, they were men after all. You couldn’t trust them to make smart decisions.
Your main focus, however, was Tata Escobar. She rarely made appearances at events like this — kept safe by Pablo — but she was there. Mingling with the other wives.
You sipped at a glass of champagne, making your way towards where she was seated. You had to be clever about your plan. The last thing you wanted was to spook her. The entire night would fall apart if it did.
She was quiet, mostly listening to the conversations around her. Offering a few laughs when the opportunity arose.
Once Elena lured the other women away from Tata, you engaged her in conversation. You teased her for being so quiet, pointing out that she should’ve been the life of the party given who her husband was.
Tata abandoned her champagne glass on the table beside the armchair she had been sitting in, joining you on the sofa. Your heart broke for her when she curled her fingers around your wrist and asked you if Richie had ever cheated on you.
It was clear she was trying not to cry as she confessed to you that she had recently learned that Pablo was sleeping with one of the guests in attendance.
Valeria Velez — a beloved news journalist who had made a name for herself by interviewing Pablo Escobar. You had heard rumors, but never found confirmation that there was more than just a political connection between the two.
She was the polar opposite of Tata. Mingling with everyone in the solarium; engaging in conversation and making a point of being the center of attention.
You tried to encourage her. But was there really anything to be said to a woman in her position? When you married someone, you expected them not to stray outside of that marriage. And as far as Tata was led to believe, she had never expected Pablo to take a mistress.
It wasn’t like she’d married someone like Javier. Who you knew had slept with at least four of the women Elena was talking to currently. Not including her.
You pushed those thoughts from your mind when you heard the door open at the other end of the solarium, boisterous laughter filling the room as they men rejoined their companions.
You gave Tata a reassuring squeeze to her shoulder, before you left the sofa and made your way towards Steve.
“You didn’t bring me a cigar?” You pouted as you stopped in front of him.
“Not this time, sweetcheeks.” Steve pulled his lighter and a cigarette out of his suit pocket, passing them to you. “Why don’t you take a smoke break.”
What the hell had he heard in there? You hadn’t expected to signal for extraction this soon. Shit.
You took the cigarette from him, twirling it between your fingers as you met his eyes with an arched brow. “Why don’t you finish up with the boys and join me?” You told him, curling your fingers around his tie as you held the cigarette between your lips.
Steve nodded, “I’ll be out there.”
With a lingering look, you headed out onto the back patio. You knew Javier and Carrillo had eyes on the back garden. You just had to get yourself towards the fence line, where they’d be able to spot you lighting up.
“Headed out so soon?” Elena questioned, following you through the garden.
“You can’t be out here.” You warned her, flipping the lid closed on your lighter.
She ignored you, “Did you get what you needed?”
“I don’t know.” You shrugged. “That was Steve’s role in this.”
Elena nodded her head slowly, “Well, I hope you got what you were looking for.”
“Me too.” You smiled a little, “And thanks for the help. You really sold it.”
She shrugged. “I was curious to see what you were all about.”
“What?”
“Javi speaks very highly of you.” Elena told you with a coy smirk.
“He talks about me? With you?” You blinked at her. “He shouldn’t be running his mouth about work.”
Elena laughed, shaking her head as she looked away. “You certainly didn’t disappoint. Clever and beautiful.” She gave you a once over. “Tell him I said ‘hello’.”
“I’m sure you’ll see him soon enough.” You assured her.
“No.” She sighed, her gaze turning towards the fenceline, looking out towards Nevado del Ruiz, barely visible in the moonlit night. “He’s one of the few good men out there. We don’t see much of them after we serve our purpose.” She gestured back to the house, hugging her arms around her middle as she looked at you. “Be safe out there.”
“You too.” You let her hug you, before she headed back for the house. Holding the cigarette between your lips, you lit up — waving the flame to signal that it was time to go.

Steve didn’t get much. But he knew that something was coming.
It seemed like Pablo had a target — El Espectador. The oldest paper in the city and a frequent source of bad publicity for his valiant attempts at entering the Colombian political scene. The winter before you had arrived in the city, the newspaper’s editor had been murdered in the parking lot after he printed a campaign to run the drug lords from the city.
He’d made enemies and they hadn’t forgotten just because he had been sent to an early grave.
Steve sat in the front seat of the Jeep, trying to decipher what he’d heard with Horacio, while you sat in the back seat with Javier.
“He can’t speak Spanish for shit.” You muttered to Javier as you listened to Steve try to repeat something he had heard.
“They were talking about shoeing a horse?” You questioned, leaning forward to slap the back of Steve’s shoulder. “Errar.”
“What did I say about sending the gringos?” Horacio drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, shaking his head.
“I resent that remark.” You rolled your eyes, sinking back against your seat, tilting your head to look at Javier who had been suspiciously quiet since the trek back to Bogotá. “You good?”
He nodded stiffly.
“Elena’s nice.” You offered.
Javier clicked his tongue against his teeth. “Yeah.”
Your brows furrowed together as you studied Javier. “Are you sure you’re okay?” You questioned, reaching over and giving his forearm a squeeze. “For what it’s worth, I would’ve rather been in there with you.” You told him quietly, resting your cheek against his shoulder.
Javier was silent for a long moment before he offered a quiet. “Me too.”
“We’re good, right?” You questioned, rubbing your thumb over the back of his arm, keeping your fingers curled around his arm. You hated to admit that things had been weird between the two of you, ever since you broke up with Lance. You thought he would’ve been thrilled that you no longer had the CIA in tow, but he wasn’t.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” Javier questioned, tilting his head to look at you.
“I don’t know.” You told him honestly, searching his eyes in the darkness as the streetlights shone through the window, providing you with brief glimpses of him. “It’s been a long night.”
“I won’t tell if you fall asleep.” He assured you, petting his hand over your knee.
You weren’t tired, but you kept your head nestled against his shoulder for the rest of the ride. He kept his hand on your leg, his thumb occasionally moving against your skin. It was a nice gesture, a nice… friendly gesture.
Steve was still running his mouth, much to Horacio’s dismay. He started to look back and you and Javier and you were quick to close your eyes, pretending that you had fallen asleep.
“Elena really helped,” He told Javier. “Hell, the two of them could’ve been sisters.”
You’d noticed that too. Hell, you’d noticed that two weeks ago when you first met her. You chose to ignore it. That was something no one had time to unpack.

                                                   Chapter 78
The street disappeared behind him, he couldn’t see the angel or the delightful sky any longer, all faded until it mended to this new surrounding of marbled walls and strengthening pillars. As expected, he was alone, leveling until he gave a landing step that echoed rather ominously in this emptiness.
He was fully in the third realm, no trace of the second seen in any of these walls, this floor, the ceiling, the directions that went on in darkness.
Focus on moving ahead, the angel had said, and so, if even the uneasiness, he decided to tip toe his first foot forward, slow and testing, his body trying to follow with in the same hesitance and worry. He thought he could land his foot with nothing to worry about, but it was just as he did that there was a sudden glow, a gold tracing intricate designs all over the marble and pillars. This hall seemed like it had begun to breathe, brightening in these beautiful signs all around that despite the words of the angel, it instantly invoked panic. Feliciano burst with sudden energy to run, away from whatever was to occur. Unbeknownst to him, whatever was occurring, took a grasp of his feet, brightening in this beautiful gold that began to decorate with golden chains that hanged and flourished, raising up trying to completely engulf him all. Feliciano refused it, trying to shake it away, jumping awkwardly forward as he did. In that turn, a sudden light was shot at him, a rather rash push that almost tumbled him forward to a ground gloriously alight in reds and golds now. His whole body was now coated in a gold and red that completely eradicated the colors he had kept from his very entrance into the realms. He shone an outward that added to the lights of this hall, now no trace of the marble he had entered to.
When he thought he was safe, away from whatever this could throw at him, he was suddenly bombarded with many more lights, shakes and new designs growing on the walls, stronger at each step Feliciano made to run away. He only continued to shine brighter, these new lights wrapping around him to make outward red marks, like flowers on pillars and walls, or stars above his village. From what he wore in the third realm, it began to elongate, giving him a long cape, other parts tightened and extended to cover him all in a suit that reminded Feliciano of imperial majesty, sewing symbols and forms with richness of rubies and gold. It decorated him in jewels, in coloring his face, up and up until he felt the weight of growth on the top of his head. It was a halo, large, with surely pillars that elaborated in detailed art, extended to always keep him heavenly and ruling. His eyes were now the red of wine, his hair the flame of fire, opening and flowing in an accept to all this magic that fell on him, his walk more peaceful, practically floating as he made his away across. The residue that was flown away in sparks and light, went upward, sculpting a set of white feathered wings, tall, expanding. Feliciano felt them suffocated in these walls. They should be free, they should be flying over a land his to rule as he pleased.
He felt a grace of power, so definite that he already wanted to decree, shout and sing it all until everything was formed as he desired. Begone with this hall! He was ready to destroy it all, but he was still being granted image, power still reigning on him, his being joining the lighting of this hall, now much more until he could feel in it belonging and safety, like he was simply strolling one of the halls of his castle.
He skipped, he danced, he welcomed himself in this form, one that had never made him feel so beautiful.
Something was coming… he felt a sort of precipice…one he knew he had to accept in and take its passage. It was the entrance into the fourth realm, the hall ending in a beautiful, tall, decorated in flowers, vases, statues and gold, door. Pure darkness awaited at the other side, but Feliciano felt unafraid of it, in fact, he smiled as he dared to go through, like another splash, an exhale of new air, all behind him without a care. With the growth of his wings, he expected them to carry on through, but as his breath came back in…he realized that he was falling, into a void, nothing to fly or even hold on to. He screamed and was torn in worrying over falling endlessly or hitting a hard ground. He surprised himself with the control he kept on his wings. He couldn’t make them fly, but he could make them wrap around himself as he witnessed a familiar blue light coming, to keep him cushioned for what he thought would be a harsh hit against water.
He did fall against something…hard, yet soothing, bouncing across these waters in ease before it decided to keep an even float, slow and content. The wings seemed to have fallen on their own, opening Feliciano’s gaze to a still continuing darkness overhead. Below him was polished wood, red, a triangular forward that Feliciano identified part of a boat. Once he settled his breath, he stood in what he realized was a small space, his wings much larger than it, having to stand up to not take any more area that Feliciano used to pace as he explored how this vessel was decorated. Of course, red, golden trimmed, flowers and medallions towering and flooding to two pillars that stood at the bottom of the vessel, they met at an arch with a beautifully decorated St. Mark at the top, kind, watching and expecting.
Once he was familiar with where he stood, he looked overboard, to the same waters that continued in the darkness that he had met back in the first realm. He reached a hand and noticed that this time it could sink in, wet and translucent as water should be. There were no other boats as his…well, no other people, floating above releasing magic, or walking or flying. Nothing. He was the only presence.
“Hello,” he called in the hopes someone could come. He repeated, he tried in all the languages he knew, but nothing came back to him. He sighed, then noticing a tremor from the corner of his eyes. It was the boat hitting against the water, sailing a path…it was moving! It was the realization that it was passing him on, to the rest of the heavens that all awaited when passing all the realms.
This was the last realm…he only had a couple of hours, maybe even minutes, to get access to the Eternal Reserve and yet he still didn’t have the right approach, the right key. He startled himself up and began a harsh pace around the boat. He had to hurry! The desperation making him sweat and lose the ease of his breath.
“Okay, okay, okay, what can you use? What do you have?” He told himself as his mind swam, as his steps turned into stomps that were a wonder it didn’t tip the boat over.
The reserve needed to recognize him, to know him and accept him. His answers to this was standing tall, showing his full body, heart radiating, gathering voice to shout: “Support!” It echoed, it rang…but nothing came to answer. “Uh…the moon!” Still no answer. “Economy! Ruling!” He began to swing as if it could help his words carry on longer. “Cultivation! Pleasure! The Sun! Management!” He turned, he shivered, the words shivering along with him. “Unity! Own! Reservation! Improvement! Force! Oppose! Commerce! Intention!” With each word shouted, with each silence, his voice dwindled, the force on his chest gone, the wings, the glow, the marks, this imperial new suit, beginning to look like a ridiculous costume instead of the power he felt only minutes ago. He trembled…more than ever he felt dead as this darkness seemed to swallow him more, the loneliness draining him, the boat beginning to look like a haze as tears dwelled in his eyes.
“Offering…equality…magic…ability…” whispers now, losing intensity and the strength to stand. “Representation…planification…prediction…cooperation…” he slowly came down, taking a kneel, his face meeting ground as the shiver shook him to a high whimper. “…affinity…relation…” his tone cracked, it chocked and scratched at whatever word that tried to escape. “…harshness…history…”
What was the point? He harshly spat at himself with venom. None of the words he surely tried to memorize would work. And like this! A tearful mess, weak, alone, broken and given up, leaving at a lost his entire world…he was not worthy to show himself…prove he was whatever these words were. He felt himself tempted to sink into the darkness below him, forgotten and never to arise, let everything fall as he surely will, as everything was meant to crumble and die. Aloud went his shouts, his pain, reflected well on these waters, Feliciano already imagining all the bodies that were meant to pass here, disappointed, with horror and betrayal in their faces.
These realms seemed like a great escape from the horrors…but he did not know how far these two monsters could go…these realms were just at risk…the heavens…it will cease because of his doing, and he coated the boat in the tears in his fault.
It was time to give up, to face the ending that was to come and he did so with what started a calming breath…but then it trembled to misery, pain and shouts again.
“And what, Signorino, are you doing here?”
Feliciano arose and stilled at the warmth of this tone, embracing, welcoming…Feliciano already smiled, even with reddened eyes, a continuing shake, but he turned to meet the sudden shinning presence of his grandfather. “Nonno?”
He stood in his own boat, a gondola, a lazy lean on the pole he held, as courageous, powerful and bright as ever, more intensified with this armor of gold with beautiful symbols, his own pair of wings, a tall halo, his eyes and hair the fire and gold he himself took. “I was hoping one day to see you again here…but it is still too soon.”
“Nonno?” Feliciano was hesitant, for a moment wondering if it was a hallucination, a trick of the realm.
“Ah! Chi se ne frega! Come over here and hug your old man!” It was undeniably him, Feliciano could feel his embrace from afar no matter where and how.
“Nonno!” He shouted sure, running, letting the boat move as harshly as it wanted. Right now all he cared were those arms around him, that warmth, that cuddle and love that was so uniquely his grandfather’s. He couldn’t help these new tears that coated his shoulders, how he shook and gave himself into it. Augusto laughed and smiled loudly as he usually did, those last days of his life a faraway past that it was almost like it had never happened. They swayed, Feliciano began to grow his own laugh, letting them both settle into a safety that made them wonder if it could stand against whatever force the universe threw at them.
It could, they knew it could, Feliciano had never felt so sure of something in his time here.
As they were accustomed, as a normal train of thought returned, as the anxieties held above Feliciano once again came crashing unto him, he rose and moved back…while still keeping a tight hold of his grandfather’s hands, refusing any departure. “Nonno…what are you doing here?”
“Can’t I visit my living grandson from the beyond?” Augusto pouted so comically Feliciano couldn’t help the chuckle.
“You’re supposed to be in the heavens, nonno!” Feliciano scolded with a deep smile.
“So what? I can do whatever I want anyways. The Aces can’t do shit!” He was sure, high and mighty as ever even as he spoke of the gods. “You won’t believe how they treat the Valenti over there! It’s like were Aces ourselves! They bow and join our feasts! We ask something and they give it to us without question! Your great grandfather Frederico holds balls every day and won’t stop talking about how he’ll be reborn as a prince, and your great grandmother Giovanna has created palaces for all that cannot compare to anything you’ve seen in your world!”
“Nonno, that sounds wonderful!” Feliciano’s eyes alighted and grew in wonder.
“It’s overbearing! Sometimes I can’t stand it!” Feliciano’s laughter swayed his boat slightly. “Sometimes I like to take this job to get away from it all, helping those who are here to pass on to the heavens, talk and know…whatever I can about you and the rest of my family.” And sincere he turned, deep and loving, Feliciano letting his hand caress his now marked and glittered cheek. “And you are looking absolutely beautiful,” Augusto complimented sweetly, Feliciano cuddling more into that hand. For a moment he had forgotten about how he was decorated, his wings a reminder that soured him once again, Augusto feeling him sink in his arms.
“You knew I was in the realms?”
“A young Queen of Hearts in the realms is bound to cause a stir. At first, I thought the worst. I suffered and begged it all to be a mere rumor. But more came with the news…then more cleared your reason and how this is a journey in which you are trying to find something…that you’re really meant to come back.” Augusto didn’t think he could see his grandson sink lower, even as he still held to him. “Amore…what is happening?” He tried to raise him, to at least meet him with his eyes, even when such misery lay in them.
“I…failed, Nonno…” and the tears came again, his lean to hide and not show any disgrace to his grandfather.
“What? Why? Why are you saying that?” Augusto continued to keep him up, shaking him if he had to.
“There’s war raging in our world. Khaos and Destro are obliterating everything and whatever we do, it’s never enough! I spent weeks mourning over…mourning over…” the pain wouldn’t let him continue.
 “Ludwig?” Augusto guessed as much.
Feliciano could only respond with a nod, as his voice was too hoarse to do so now. “You…you heard?”
“I did. I was hurt immensely when I found out.”
“Did you…did you ever see him pass through…?” once again he dared, even if it was like more needles to his pain.
“I’m afraid not…no matter how long I waited and expected him…he never did.” Augusto didn’t dare utter more of what he wondered it meant. It was sorrow that was best not to let themselves sink further in.
Feliciano couldn’t really always escape it, his loss was always painted clear on him, one Augusto wished he could wash away…but he knew what it was like, for he had gone through the lost of his dear Helena. Now, she was with him, they had a home in the heavens together, and Augusto still cried himself to sleep in her arms, not believing he had truly been reunited with her. He now wondered how he could have possibly lived in the old world after her death. Yet, he had this…he had the chance to meet with his wife again, even hope for a future where they could reincarnate together…Feliciano…as it stood…would not. He would never connect to this pain…and it hurt that all he could do was this caress, this presence to assure him that he was not alone even in this infinite darkness.
“I…I came here to see if I could access the Eternal Reserve. There the power of the alignment is stored. I could have brought it back and…saved everybody…but…but…” he began to shake with tears again.
“The…Eternal Reserve?” Augusto questioned, just as he noticed a wooden raft pass them, a marked man stood there, proud as he omitted beautiful spheres of fire. He sailed pass them, not taking notice, following the fastest current.
“To access it, I must prove myself…but…I’m not worthy enough for it…it won’t come to me…I came here for nothing.” Feliciano didn’t bother to notice as a large canoe passed, rowed by several, all laughing loudly as they hurried.
“How do you prove yourself to this?”
Feliciano didn’t raise his voice as a raft flew above them, people there in a jitter that Augusto had to lean closer to hear his grandson’s answer. “The four stances.”
 “The Four stances?”
“Yes, the four stances, Nonno. I’m supposed to know them, what each kingdom represents and I have to show those qualities myself.” There came larger metal ones, with sails enough to cover them, ignorant to all. People sang and shouted, but neither had the felicity to join.
“The four stances…just the four stances…”
“Yes, Nonno. I don’t know them, and it’s so complicated and I can’t- Agh!” Augusto hit him with his pole.
“The four stances! I taught you this! I explicitly remember teaching it to you several times back when we started our teachings in the villa!” He was angry, groaning and huffing.
“What?! No you didn’t, I don’t remember that!” Another hit of the pole, Feliciano groaning and trying to rub this new pain out from his head.
“Well if you didn’t spend half the time doodling and distracted thinking about…prancing naked in red fields with Ludwig, then right now you wouldn’t have this dilemma!” Augusto had to stand so his shouts could land right on him.
“Wait…so you know them!" Feliciano realized before he could defend himself from the new hit.
“Of course I know them! And so do you!” He pointed harshly.
“Nonno, I really don’t remember them and I am in a huge hurry. Just tell them to me and then we’ll have a chance to save everyone!” A sailboat passed them, an old Viking one, with Jokers shouting as they made their way.
“No!” Feliciano was expecting a new hit, but Augusto instead brought the pole to his chest.
“What?! Come on, Nonno! You can’t just leave me like this!”
“I won’t be leaving you, amore mio. I am sure you know them. Even if sometimes your head was in other places, I know you kept the words, I know you have lived and proved them well, you just have to name them.” He was confident, to the point that as a large shine came in their backs, as the currents came faster, as more boats, rushing animals and whatever transport that Kingdoms have concocted with passed by them in beautiful shines, he was patient and knowing.
 “Nonno, please, just-”
“No. You must name them on your own. Feliciano, think! Think back to the days of our teachings. The four stances are what each kingdom represents…and who represents the kingdoms?”
 “The…King, Queen and Jack.”
“Exactly. Now, how is it mostly shown?”
Feliciano lay in silence as he thought, focused and determined, Augusto knew, even as a boat made of ice sailed past them, a whole array of people skating and dancing in it, and Feliciano was still in his own mind.
 “Through their unions...”
Augusto thought he had to keep leading him, but Feliciano must have touched something in his mind, must have come just to the right reminder, laid forgotten in memories of sitting on those stuffy desks back in his home, for he himself continued, “it’s shown in what their union takes strength on, how they present themselves to their kingdom, what gives it energy and how even the King and Queen decide their relationship on.”
And it was clear, in memories of his beloved Ludwig, of his dear Kiku, their coronation, their wedding and sacrifices. Their childhood ran past his mind, just as he saw two children souls, two Heartian girls, in the back of a St. Lion sprinting forward. He thought to their grown reunion…not the best… it was hurt, it was broken…but it was fixed, they fought and mended for it as every King and Queen of hearts has done, until it grew unto deep feelings of… “Love.”
 Augusto smiled.
 “Hearts’s stance is Love.”
There was a sudden glow, pumping like the beat of a heart, alighting these oceans in red before dimming in beautiful marks that sparkled and glorified more this passage to the others. A man in a coach laughed and let his hand play with some of the red sparks that arose.
“Good, go on. What about Diamond?”
And Feliciano thought on Francis’ years, like a guided brother. Vash and Lili were so young…but this gap was always present in Diamond royals, for their purpose was to grow, mentor and learn between one another to always be sure of what would be the best outcome.
 “Diamond’s stance is Wisdom.”
A yellow beat, to mix along with the red, gardeners taking from this energy to make flowers to add to their already plentiful rafts.
Then he thought of Spades, a population mixed with so much magic and technology. Differences, tensions…it doesn’t help that the King and Queen are to be married without knowing each other until the year of arising. Yet they always manage to work, to unite, and above all… “Trust. Spades’s stance is Trust.” Then came that distinct blue to add, pattering stars all across. Some took baskets to take, others stared and tried to catch what they could with the simple palm of their hands.
“One more, carino,” Augusto reminded with a teasing smile.
 Just Clubs…Clubs…only one more.
The shakes were turning stronger…some had reported that parts of the castle had crumbled. Despite the hours that passed, many still stood in the same exact spot they had decided as their last face off. Their weapons were still brandished and some even had magic running in their hands.
“Destro has officially entered the perimeters of the city!” One soldier came crashing in to announce before he settled off to help the next waves of attacks. A roar could be heard clearly, Augustino began to cry from it, and to add, the tremors they knew now were from attacks blown straight to their city.
“How much time is left?” Kandake shouted to Renata, who shook as she gazed to her hand and then to the greying body in the water. “I can’t be sure…perhaps thirty minutes?”
“We might have to get him out sooner,” Elizabeta realized.
“Can we send him some sort of message to hurry?” Kiku wondered, moving back to join the Valenti family, to help in the necessary.
“The music box!” Renata turned to Lovino.
“I’m not sure, but we can try!” Lovino took it out and without a moment to wonder, he opened the chest to bring the melody.
Clubs was the biggest of the four kingdoms, with the most intimidating and mysterious of rulers. They kept the field that held Khaos, their mountains and trees a stronghold that guarded and was ready to face whatever threats. Like Diamonds, the royals were not expected to marry…they were expected to show… “Power.” To match along with the force of their kingdom. “Clubs’s stance is Power.” And the ocean was joined by the pulse of green. A row boat that had been trying to be quick, to keep up with all these movements, couldn’t hold their stop, their play and wonder as all arose and crafted.
“Love. Trust. Wisdom. Power.” Feliciano enunciated them sure, this darkness now blessed with the four kingdom colors, colors that began to shine well on him from their reflection. He smiled, letting it spread on his body, feeling powerful again, hopeful, ready.
Under the paint of these currents, something began to glow, to call. He was about ready to jump and answer it, but not before turning to his grandfather, with his very same smile, prideful and ecstatic for a sure future to come. Feliciano ran once again into his arms, a sure last embrace, warmth and belonging that Feliciano hoped could last until they were to meet again at his right time.
“Most beautiful Queen the kingdom has ever had I always said.”
“Ah, Nonno,” Feliciano rolled his eyes, but he accepted the words.
“Little Augustino is the loveliest thing.”
 “How did you-”
“I have my ways,” he chuckled, tightening more his body to him, hoping it could well imprint. “Watch over him, watch over your family, your kingdom, your world…save it…and make it ready for your own little ones.” Augusto rubbed the red jewels in his palms, knowing…how, Feliciano didn’t really care, he smiled and bowed in promise.
This moment was interrupted by a melody…a highly familiar one that seemed to crack across this world.
“I’ll journey and see beyond the lines of our kingdom,
Never a fear to be lost, never a fear to fall,
In pleasure, I will take the mysteries of what I could meet,
If you accept to be mine, my Queen.”
It wasn’t sung, but Feliciano could feel the words already pouring from his heart, coming to life in his head. No one else seemed to listen, the boats continued on by him, in their own music, Augusto himself unware of this alarm that rung. He only continued to smile, behind him the largeness of the gates of heaven, immense, sculpted, living, beautiful…tempting even to Feliciano with a light that began to coat everything.
“No heat, no cold, will stop me of my search,
No sun, no rain to go against my strength,
Just promise me your hand,
And love me in our eternity.”
This song was stronger, what was below the waters joined in it with insistence to come and so Feliciano took one last breath, before he had to turn away from his grandfather, another goodbye, but indeed there was a promise he had to fulfill.
He extended his arms in farewell to the realms, before he brought them forward to propel him, a jump, a slight flight and he was crashing into the surface, into the depths as heavy and moving as water should be. He helped this pull by swimming in it, deeper and deeper until the lights above weren’t clear, until the call from down below began to shine on its own, apart…in its world away from all.
In a quick distraction, he could see the shocks and releases of the first realm, the bright colors of the second realm, the lighting halls of the third realm and the rushing waters of the fourth. He saw them all like webs around a grand network, and the call, coming from a center…in a unique place between the connections of all the realms. It took its form like a cabinet, rich, crafted and opening its door of elegance to the person it had found worthy.
“My sun, my moon, my land, my love,
I know it’s a journey you will overcome,
But I don’t need you to go so far,
I want you here to kiss me.”
The melody still went on, hurrying Feliciano’s paddle across this expanse, the light reaching more, engulfing his approach. It widened as it felt him there, growing enough so it could take Feliciano into a center, truly in depth with all the information, all that was available, showcasing not in form, but in various feelings of power, going through him until he could recognize the true one he needed. He let that specific one take rest in him, mend with his skin, his blood, his spirit, his inner most power until he was well blended with it and…awake.

Located just 0.8km from the center of Hoi An, Loongboong Homestay Hoi An not only offers beautiful views but also elegantly furnished rooms and dedicated service. Loongboong Homestay makes customers feel like they are lost in the magical forest of this place. This is the ideal homestay to “go away” when you want to find peace of mind. Moreover, if you want to visit the old town, it is very close to here.
This homestay is probably not suitable for those of you who want to visit the best beach in Hoi An, because it is 4km from An Bang beach. However, Loongboong Homestay has a very affordable price, only from 300,000 to 600,000 VND/room.
3. An Bang Garden homestay in Hoi An
The open garden space of the homestay will make you relax after a long trip
Just a few minute’s walk from An Bang beach, An Bang Garden homestay is a garden combined with a fresh and beautiful house. The rooms here have a view of the garden, catch the morning sunlight and hear the chirping of birds. Rooms are decorated very simply and modernly but have very nice and delicate seating corners.
An Bang Garden homestay is quite far from the center of Hoi An ancient town, not suitable for those who want to visit the city. Room rates range from 300,000 to 600,000 VND/room.
4. Old Yellow House Hoi An
Old Yellow House is located in the heart of Hoi An ancient town, very convenient for traveling and visiting this ancient and beautiful city. Modestly nestled in a small alley, Old Yellow House brings a peaceful and relaxing feeling like “home”. Just sitting on the balcony watching the small alley of Hoi An also brings an ancient atmosphere that few places have.
Old Yellow House has a small area, only suitable for couples or small groups or traveling alone. Room rates here range from 200,000 to 500,000 VND/room.
5. Red Flower Cottages homestay in Hoi An
Red Flower Cottages homestay is a lovely house with 3 houses and 7 rooms with spacious garden design. The houses all have thatched roofs with simple rustic beauty, that style begins at the entrance, made from bamboo gates and whispering trees. The houses are fully equipped, in addition, there is a shared kitchen.
Red Flower Cottages homestay is very suitable for large groups or families, but not suitable for you to go alone because the room price is quite expensive. The price here is from 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 VND depending on the room and house.
With the simple and sophisticated style of homestays in Hoi An, Le Bleu homestay brings a close and extremely warm beauty. This homestay also makes young people “standstill” by the beautiful virtual living corners. Moreover, the way to this homestay is also a vast rice field, if you go in the ripe rice season, you can see the whole rice field full of flowers.
Red Flower Cottages homestay is about 10 minutes from the center of Hoi An ancient town when traveling by motorbike, so it is not suitable for those who want to travel by bicycle or on foot. Room rates here range from 700,000 – 1,000,000 VND / day
6. Heron House Hoi An
Heron House Hoi An is almost completely isolated from the outside world, both quiet and sophisticated. For those who want to find a place to hide, this is a very suitable homestay. This place also has a swimming pool with a view of the field which is extremely majestic and suitable for living.
However, the disadvantage of Heron House Hoi An is that the road is quite difficult to find. Room rates here range from 1,200,000 to 3,000,000/day
7. The Hoi An Hippie House
If you are a follower of Hippie style, you must definitely try this homestay.
With colorful patches throughout the homestay, this place looks so vibrant. This is also a very quiet homestay and suitable for quiet afternoons.
This place is not suitable for those who want to explore the ancient town of Hoi An because it is located quite far from the center. Room rate from 300,000-500,000 VND / day
8. The Happy Clam Hoi An Homestay
Elegant with two tones of blue-white, The Happy Clam is completely “on point” in terms of visual satisfaction. This place is great for young people who like to live in virtual luxury, go once and have photos uploaded all week. There are also lots of fun activities.
The downside is that The Happy Clam has a rather expensive room price, from 800,000 – 1,200,000 VND / room. With the above price, young people who go on a “trip” often have to regretfully ignore this beautiful and comatose homestay.
9. Mali Home 1
Nestled in a green garden, Mali Home 1 is an extremely peaceful and quiet Hoi An homestay. On the rooftop of this homestay, there is also a place to watch the moon and enjoy tea. And most especially, the dog Mali is so entwined that people don’t want to leave.
The minus point of this homestay is that the road is quite difficult to find. Room rates range from 310,000 to 450,000 VND/room.
10. An Bang Beach Hideaway
True to the word “hideaway”, An Bang Beach Hideaway is a great homestay to “hide” to hide. The atmosphere here makes you relax and strangely peaceful with the combination of white, yellow, and blue.
This homestay is not suitable for those who want to visit Hoi An ancient town because it is quite far away. Room rate from 300,000 – 600,000 VND
11. Homestay Hoi An Flame Flower
With a simple and cozy design, Flame Flower homestay has captured the hearts of many people coming here. The bedrooms are quiet and clean. The homestay owner is extremely enthusiastic and ready to give advice when you need it. This homestay is also the destination of many foreign tourists.
The downside is that the breakfast here is quite expensive, 70,000 VND / person. However, the room price is only about 430,000 VND/room.
12. Cat Tuong Boutique Villa Hoi An
Designed according to the ancient Hoi An concept of the entire homestay, it is not surprising that most of the guests here are foreigners. This homestay is almost completely isolated from the outside world by an immense field.
The downside is that this homestay is quite far from the center and you have to rent a motorbike rental Hoi An. Room price from 680,000 – 1,500,000 VND depending on the room type.
13. Horizon Homestay in Hoi An
This place also has a cozy design like other homestays but has a large garden. Isn’t it great to sit and drink tea under the lantern light before the gentle breezes of the afternoon?
This place is quite far from the center, but you can use the homestay’s free bicycles to move around. Room rates range from 350,000 to 550,000 VND/room.
14. Mali Home Homestay in Hoi An
It can be seen that every corner of the room is carefully cared for and designed. If you have the opportunity to come here, it is extremely satisfying visually as well as having photo albums to take home. In addition, behind the homestay, there is a beautiful field.
Not suitable for anyone looking for a cheap homestay, the room price here is 700,000 VND/room.
15. Home Farm Villa Hoi An
Home Farm is a type of homestay combined with a villa. Each jar, coconut shell, and classic tile floors make this place different and strangely attractive. Items such as beds, chairs, cabinets, and even the roof are made of bamboo wood, creating an extremely airy feeling.
The minus point is that this place is quite far from the old town and the room price is quite expensive, not suitable for young people who like to explore.
16. An Bang Little Family
Designed in an open space, each room has two windows to receive the freshest and cleanest air. Outside, there are also many trees planted to create a feeling of closeness to nature.
However, rooms that are outdoors are easily obscured by trees and become very dark. Room rates here are from 800,000 to 1,500,000 VND.
17. Seasnails Homestay in Hoi An
Seasnails is like an oasis villa in the middle of a sunny Mediterranean region. With simple and luxurious room design combined with clear open space, Seasnails completely “conquered” those who have come and stayed here.
The minus point is that the homestay is located quite far from the center of Hoi An. Room price from 500,000 – 1,000,000 VND/room.
18. Under The Coconut Tree
True to the name, the rooms of this homestay are surrounded by trees with an open design, immersed in nature. Homestay is also very diverse, with rooms suitable for many types of groups.
Although very quiet and beautiful and close to the sea, this Hoi An homestay is quite far from the center. Room rates from 180,000 VND or more.
19. Mama’s House Homestay in Hoi An
Despite having a simple interior, Mama’s House’s room is still fully equipped and extremely comfortable. The care service here is also very attentive and dedicated. In addition, tourists can use the free bicycles of this Hoi An homestay to move into the center of Hoi An.
Room rates range from 260,000 to 460,000. Although the cost is good, the service is good, but for young people who love “virtual living”, this place does not seem to be very popular.

On America’s Roads and Highways

“Stay on target!  Stay on target!”

Taking a moment to stretch; the blur is from my movement, the motorcyclist wasn’t really going anywhere.

“...stay on target...”

I-70 as car park: can we stack your traffic for you?
Heading back to West Virginia in July, I thought I’d take the chance and run through the road construction on I-70 east of Indianapolis -- and it turned out to be the grind promised by highway department signs: “heavy traffic - expect delays,” as seen above.  Narrowing down to one lane in each direction, the traffic did not “zipper” together, but instead jammed up and jockeyed way too much, which slowed everyone down, or brought us to a dead stop a few times.
Much easier driving was had elsewhere:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two shots above are of Interstate 77, which runs north-south in western West Virginia.  Away from Charleston, the traffic was pretty light, which I appreciated as long as it lasted.  The hazy skies these were shot under are because of the wildfires.  Smoke from Canada as well as some from the western U.S. was bent by the prevailing winds southeast across the Mid-Western states toward the South and Mid-Atlantic, the very high, thin layer hanging pale where there should have been blue sky.
U.S. 35 in Ohio, angling north-west to south-east, is over much of its length built to the standards of the interstates, though the three times I’ve been over it there was far less traffic -- at least once beyond the Dayton area.  As seen below, the 4-lane appears like the early interstates must have looked once upon a time -- like in 1963:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In West Virginia, the Robert Byrd Highway System was also built to interstate standards, while keeping the (mostly) unrestricted access.  U.S. 50 between Clarksburg and Parkersburg shows this:
Tumblr media
If I didn’t know better I’d think it was a shot I’d taken from I-70 in eastern Ohio.
Where the interstates don’t go, or where Senator Byrd’s highways weren’t built, there were the smaller highways, like U.S. 60 in the Kanawha River valley east of Charleston:
Tumblr media
Like the rail roads before them, many improved roads in the eastern mountains follow the river valleys -- it’s just easier building that way.  Where the roads can’t follow a flowing stream, the option is to follow the contours of the hills themselves, as below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
on West Virginia 66 west of Cass.  I don’t have photos of the really twisty-turny hairpin turns ‘cause I was, like, steering n’shit.  But many miles of up up up, down down down, left right left right left right were had touring through the central part of the state -- and those roads were improved by a great deal beyond the dirt tracks that they would have been before road improvement became a serious matter.
Tumblr media
This image typical country road near Charleston in 1921 shows the condition of most roads in the U.S. prior to the 1950s. [1]  Or, depicting some twisty-turny as well as some improvement -- it looks like it’s been macadamized and there are guard rails! -- is this shot of the National Pike near Hancock, Maryland, in 1922: [2]
Tumblr media
Road improvement, even if it was only macadam and wooden rails, kinda’ started in the East and worked West.  Trips, even by automobile, let alone with horses, much less by foot, were measured in days or weeks, not hours.  I was able to make the run from western West Virginia back to north-central Indiana in less than 10 hours (allowing for one long-ish stop and road construction -- it is Orange Cone Season) rather than the week it might have taken in decades past.  If y’wanted to go somewhere, you’d a took a train!
While improved over its condition of early travel, the Fayette Station Road in the New River Gorge is still narrow, twisty, and is today one-way over much of its length:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Descending from Lansing on the north, to the bottom of the valley, then back up again near Fayetteville on the south side of the gorge, the road still allows tourists access to what had been (until 1977) the only local road bridge over the New River:
Tumblr media
With the opening of the New River Gorge Bridge (I suppose I might term it “the World Famous...”) travel time over the river was reduced from 45+ minutes to less than a minute.
Tumblr media
Looking east from the New River Gorge Bridge: hard to know what you’re lookin’ at.
Tumblr media
Fayette Station Road circa 1920: narrow, twisty and dirt. [3]  If you met someone going the other way, one or the other of you would have to dare the edge, or back up to a wider spot to pass.
Tumblr media
The new New River bridge from the old one.  At 3,000+ feet the new bridge is not quite a mile long, but appears to the driver like most other bridges; the first time I passed over it, I didn’t even realize that I was traversing a famous bridge -- you really can’t tell it’s anything at 65 MPH.  But it is “up there:” according to an NPS placard, “Two Statues of Liberty and one Washington Monument can fit under the arch with twenty feet to spare.” [4]
Tumblr media
The second time I drove over it, I did know what I was driving on (”Oh, hey it’s The Bridge!”) and made like a tourist to stop and take photos:
Tumblr media
like y’do.

How I picture Scar/Doc/Ren HERMITSHIP UNDER CUT.
Doc and Ren start dating during the time that they're working on the stock exchange, and they're the picture perfect couple: cute dates, just the right amount of PDA (kisses on the cheek when leaving or when seeing each other, hugs, holding hands), nice presents the other either brought or made, etc
When area 77 arch begins, Doc and Ren communicate because they are a Healthy Couple in a Healthy Relationship and know that communication is key. Doc goes "Hey I'm going to be government, if Renbob wants to make an apperance go ahead as long as there will be no real fighting?" and Ren is like "fuck yeah love that xoxo"
Anyways Doc invites Scar to his government and they grow pretty close. Scar may develop a crush bc 'I think this is unrequited love so i will bury it deep deep down and pine from a distance while the person i like goes on dates with an equally cute person' is my j a m
Anyways Grian and Impulse notice Scar pining one day and Scar tells him about how he feels for Doc, and then he kinda rambles about how he could never tell Doc because he likes Doc and Ren too much to hurt either of them and then has the sudden realisation that he also likes Ren, which makes him feel worse so Grian and Impulse (with the help of Cub and False bc I Say So) try to set Doc and Ren up with Scar
It doesn't really work and Grian gets caught by Doc trying to sneak into a77 and spills the beans to Doc about Scar, and Doc grabs Grian and goes 'aight well I'm getting Ren and you're explaining to us both' and they meet up with Ren at Grian's hermitville base and Grian explains, then Ren and Doc have a convesation about it, then Ren goes 'well now we need to romance him. we have to romance him so hard'
So Doc goes back to area 77 and gets ready to flirt with Scar, and he does so, and at this point its looking all uphill from there until it isn't because Scar panics at the flirting (due to serious 'I don't want to break up the cutest couple on the server' reasons) and goes to Bdubs and Keralis about it because they don't know about his crush on Doc. He tells them and they go "well, we'll tell Ren that we saw Doc flirting with you and you looked really uncomfortable so that Doc leaves you alone! :D" and they do
There is a problem in that due to Ren knowing that Doc is flirting with Scar, but hearing that Scar is uncomfortable with it (and also having Impulse and Grian listening in, and although both of them know that Scar likes Doc and Ren and Grian knowing that Doc and Ren spoke about it) and Ren goes 'alright ill talk to him about it' and Keralis beems, leaves and Bdubs goes 'it isnt like Doc to do that, dont let him do that to you' and Ren is like '... aight'
So Doc gets summoned to the hippie commune and Grian and Impulse pretend to go to bed but actually listen in and anyways Ren goes 'Doc Scar thinks your going to try and cheat on me with him and went to keralis and bdubs' and before Doc can go 'aight ill try to be a little slower' Xisuma + Cub show up and goes 'Doc i s2g if your cheating-' 'hes not cheating we both want scar to be in our relationship' and cub goes 'why dont you both just ask him out' and they do
Then, Doc, Ren and Scar ALL go on cute dates together. They all exchange gifts and do the right amount of PDA. They are the Best and Most Healthy polyam trio out there.
