I am torn. Like I like it, but uh... my pessimism doesn’t help not knowing the 3 words. 🤣 🌺 It has been 5 years since I have read this. Honestly I fell in love with this once I watched this and found out it was a book. I loved the movie and the book and at the time, I was so happy that there was more to the story, but now, I feel as if it would have been okay with only one book. I am in debate whether or not to continue the trilogy or to let it go. I definitely want to watch the movie again and probably re-read the book and see how I feel. So I have just finished reading my last book for 2020, and I chose to read this novel that has an apocalyptic vibe to it; the ongoing theme of this year. . Three teenagers’ lives are intertwined in this story as they get their crumbling lives together because human lives are about to be extinguished by an unknown neighbour in our galaxy called Alma. One has to come into terms with their older sibling who ran away from home; another has to find their missing father to give a letter written by their schizophrenic mother; and the other has to learn how to open themself up and be selfless for once. . The idea and concept of The Stranding was so extraordinary that I couldn’t NOT preorder it when I heard about it. I’m not sure if it’s because of living within our current COVID-19 pandemic and wanting to read apocalyptic-type novels but I’m really enjoying these kinds of novels at the moment. I know that some people would rather steer clear of anything potentially triggering but for some reason, it seems to help me make sense of my own mixed emotions. ⁣ ⁣ I read this novel as part of a buddy read hosted by the wonderful @edels_reads with lots of lovely bookstagrammers and we had some fantastic and strangely enough, very hilarious conversations regarding whales, their err…appendages 😂 and the end of the world. ⁣ ⁣ The story follows Ruth who is living in the city, working hard, trying to avoid the increasingly worrying news reports and trapped in a claustrophobic relationship. She ends up travelling to the other end of the world to escape and find herself again but when she gets there, she ends up having to shelter in the mouth of a giant and whale corpse in order to survive. With her is new friend Nik and together they find a whole new way of living. ⁣ ⁣ The Stranding was such a fascinating and exciting book to read. We get snippets of Ruth’s life “before” and “after” and I found both sections equally compelling. It was so interesting how Ruth changed as a person through a terrible, life-threatening incident and how she continued to grow as the novel continued. ⁣ ⁣ The post-apocalyptic part of the story had everything you’d want from an end of the world narrative. It was The Road combined with Station Eleven sprinkled with a tiny bit of The Beach but it had a flavour and style all of its own that made it infinitely memorable and a wonderful adventure. I love Tracey and how she just forgets who is around her and swears like a trouper, but has a heart of gold. She has suffered and is learning to live and love again giving hope and love to a new family that need her as much as she needs them. You have done a phenomenal job babe. The twists and turns, Qui is amazing and the imagination of the new worlds and habitats is astonishing. You should be so so proud of your accomplishments.
