TW: SA,RACISM,COLORISM
Might fill up ur ask box sorry… As a black person. I don’t have a problem with racism being represented in any form of media. If Mel wants to incorporate racism in her storyline fine, seen it hundreds of times. However, I thought the racism would be like, cat people hate wolf/mutt/dog people raaa blah blah blah type thing. Or humans hate anthro animals raaaa. But not full on colorism in her own species. Does she know WHY lighter skin was considered wealthy and if you had darker or colored skin, you were poor? The white goatasus being upper class while the colored ones are Lower class, is giving slave plantation era😍(considering that’s where colorism comes from) . LETS DO A SHORT HISTORY LESSON! 🥳 The whites were the ones who were of higher class BECAUSE they owned most land/ property and they REFUSED to treat the black folk like people and never paid them and overworked them to do death!! Even so that they would take away the main providers, the black fathers and work, beat, whip them until they died leaving the mother to fend for her children!! 😢😢. The mixed folk (black and white) were middle class, and were allowed to have education, had better clothes and better living than black slaves (they still suffered lol ,white masters would grape slave women which would result in mixed children, don’t get it twisted) and of course the black slaves were bottom of the barrel and literally lived in their own filth, stench and poor homes. so even after 400+ years, colorism and classism is still a thing and people will always assume people with melanin are poor bc of this fucked up system that has affected my people even NOW. Wow YES QUARTELZ, you, a white person, making ur WHITE species higher class than the COLORED ones is definitely ok!! And is fine bc ‘racism is always portrayed in media and the world isn’t gumdrops and candy cane!!’ And won’t DEFINITELY make ur melanin audience raise an eyebrow or two 😍😍! This fucking shit makes me really fucking uncomfortable, because Mel did NOT have to add that shit in her story. Why does colorism exist with a goat and Pegasus species??? So yes voided, I saw ur ass in those comments!! you are right, racism in stories are common and is used to show people that the world isn’t sunshine and rainbows. But you’re white, don’t speak on black peoples behalf thanks. What next? White supremacy in the storyline??
ps:yeah I know that not only black people experience colorism mixed with classism as so do Asians, pacific islanders, middle eastern, etc.
(wont add commentary)

On Sfar's vampire biology and anatomy
First, I think I noticed some gender dysmorphism
All the humanoid (because it is obviously not the case for Edmundo's vampire anthro duck friend) male vampires have long and big pointy ears. Fernand has them at all ages and all continuities (though they used to be smaller even if still pointy in the early comics but I guess Sfar's drawing style evolved), Dragulala has them too, and so does Edmundo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, all vampiresses have ears shaped like a human's, whether they are Pandora in all media, Aspirine, Ritaline, Ophélia, Tania or the Tree Man's ex wife. What is that dismorphism for ? Males have a better hearing for hunting ? The ears attract females ? WHY are the pointy ears there for males and not females ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one exception is Didier who does have human-like ears. But like he's really the only one in the whole franchise. So either it's a disformity, or his ears got disformed force of all these alterations and piercings and earrings he puts on, or he's trans
Tumblr media
The color of the skin is different from one vampire to another too. Some are grey, others are pearly white, both seem to be the vast majority. Is it the same for Dragulala who is slightly brownish and Tania pinkish ? POC in his case ? Or just like there are tanned and ruddy people for both cases ?
Vampirization may also give side effects, notably hair-wise. Not always since Ritaline, Aspirine and Edmundo have nothing, but Dragulala's hair became turquoise, Pandora's violet while she used to be blonde and Fernand straight up lost his auburn hair. Maybe side effects are given only if you are turnt into one by magic (though that version happens only in the new continuity) ? Maybe Dragulala also was turnt into a vampire by magic ? Maybe nothing changes is you are vampirized by another vampire or are a born vampire ? In which case can you also be born bald or with technicolor hair if one of your parents have these ? Maybe Dragulala was a vampire born with parents with a side effect ? Unless bald and technicolor hair is the same thing for the skin color, not uncommon in vampires ?
Tumblr media
Speaking of Vampire borns, apparently vampires CAN reproduce. The Tree Man had 3 children with his vampiress ex wife, and Richard doesn't mind the idea of having "wolf pups" with Ritaline and as much as it was a playful flirt it means he knows it is possible. These 2 cases are vampiresses with non-vampire partners, so hybrid children (showing it is possible ; we never see any hybrid so we don't know if they look like a mix or only like one parent), but it means they probably could reproduce too with their own males too if they wanted. And the children likely grow, they don't remain babies. Do they thanks to the other parents' other species, and if with vampires they would remain infants forever ? That would be too tragical to think of
OK OK THEY GROW BECAUSE FOREVER NEWBORNS IS SAD AND CREEPY. So if indeed they do grow, vampire borns can grow and age, but still remain immortal (unless killed lol). But then when do they stop aging ? Out of fate too, depends og individuals ? The physical age of their parents ?
Meanwhile on the contrary those who become vampires after having been humans forever keep the same age, forever frozen at that period of time they "died". Fernand in the Petit Vampire universe is forever 10, Aspirine is forever 17. That sucks but it makes sense. They weren't born that way on the contrary they "died". However it seems that those who were vampirized "traditionally" have a "post-mortem amnesia" and don't remember they pre-vampire life, so does Fernand in Grand Vampire since in this continuity he was vampirized that way, making up in his mind the first Petit Vampire continuity to invent himself a happy childhood as a way to cope with his loneliness (strangely enough in these fake memories, even if they are never shown, Pandora and him seem to remember their past life. And becoming a vampire can happen just like becoming a zombie or a ghost, you need to truly die. KNOWING PANDORA KILLED HERSELF IN THESE FAKE MEMORIES WHAT HAPPENED TO HER SON ? DAMN FERNAND YOUR STORIES ARE DARK). But in real life, how comes Fernand and his mother were both vampirized ? Maybe she became a vampire first since it's implied she already knew the Captain since here too Fernand sees him like a father meaning he was probably there before, and vampirized her son when he became an adult so that he would not age and die even if it meant forbidding each other from interacting again ? Maybe they were humans and happy with the ghost stepdad but then something happened and they had to be turnt into vampires or they would truly die ? Or if it works like in his fake memories DID die and they "respawned" as amnesic vampires just knowing who they are and who are they to each other but no past memories ?
Now, in the new continuity where it seems like it's its own thing there is no post-mortem amnesia, or at least for who like Pandora and her son turn into vampires out of curse/magic. They remember everything, and that's precisely why Pandora erases his memories, he had known tragical things with the Gibbous always trying to kill them and she wanted to give him back his innocence ; a fake good idea since by not remembering the danger he gets bored and sneaks out leading to the plot's events lol. But that memory erasing thing, is it only in this new continutiy ? Is a vampire power, or just vampiresses ? Or just Pandora, like maybe they all or some have special powers and that's hers ?
Now, I see the cartoon as its own continuity. Not only because it sometimes retells the original comics with different details even of the main plot remains, but also for how contradictory with the original comics they are when it comes to Pandora and Fernand's family tree : they have a vampire family with meetings from time to time (which the Captain doesn't attend because "I must write my operas" hilarious shit) and Fernand has a cousins, Ophélia and Didier, implying Pandora has at least one sibling who is a vampire too ; or at least 2 since I dount Ophélia and Didier are siblings since they come to visit separately and usually we know that in families when one is sent to a relative all the fratry does. The WHOLE FUCKING FAMILY was vampirized !? I doubt so ! It means it has to be a vampire born family on this continuity and that when they say "dead" it is as in they are undead ! Again I didn't watch all episodes especially since for some reasons half of them are blocked in France despite being a French show (EPIC COPYRIGHT FAIL) so I don't know if they mention any "past life" or "death" for Pandora and her son, but for what I saw so far their past is not told the fact she and him have been the same age for 300 years aside and the reason why they are vampires not given. The fact they have a whole chunk of relatives who are vampires like them really makes me think they possibly can't all have been humans or what kind of fucking curse they would have undergone if so lmao. The Captain even refers to Didier's teenhood as if it were temporary so... so what ? Why is Little Vampire forever 10 and others like maybe Didier age ? If in this continuity EVEN Little Vampire was born a vampire probably since it's a vampire family ? Weeeeeeell... what if they actually keep the age they want as long as they want to and grow up or age only when they feel like they are ready ? Perhaps Pandora wanted to stop aging while she was a young adult after having had her child, and said child is "forever 10" because he wants to remain far from adult things ? And his cousins feel good at teenhood for now. JUST A THEORY GUYS !
Enough with age now
When it comes to hygiene, Pandora says vampires are auto-washing, they are naturally clean. She gives baths to a grumpy little Fernand only because she wants to gibe him the reflex to be clean and fresh. A blood bath is also very cleansing, relaxinh and healing, like how Edmuno and his vampire duck friends put Aspirine in a blood bath after finding her knocked out
Also on the fact that all vampires fly but Ophélia because she "can't fly" and has a "handicap". Does she mean it in the meaning of a disadvantage like she was too scared yo learn (and then at what age do they learn and how ?), or does she truly have a disability (if so why is no one aware and she keeps her secret ? Her family should know)
In short that franchise raises more questions than it answers lmao

Things During Our Childhood That Therianthropy Explained In Retrospect
We’ve been working on an essays detailing our childhood experiences related to our therianthropy. This is a few really notable parts : General Obsession With Animals - Early on in our childhood we showed an unusually high interest in animals. At least since age 8 we had an obsession with animal documentaries. We had almost no interest in cartoons aimed at children and instead loved watching documentaries that focused on animals. One of our favorite series was something called "Wild Discovery" which aired on the weekend throughout much of our childhood and preteen years. Because of our interest, we quickly learned how to record them on VHS so we could rewatch them as much as we wanted. Throughout our childhood on through teenage years and on into our adulthood, we have continued to enjoy documentaries that focus on the lives of animals.
Preference For Anthro Animal Characters - When we were not watching nature documentaries, we still gravitated towards television shows or movies with nonhuman animals as characters over human ones. We found ourselves more engaged if the visual media we were watching had anthropomorphic characters for reasons we do not yet understand. We just empathized far easier with nonhuman animals compared with humans. Our preference for media with anthropomorphic animals has continued throughout our life.
Made Statements of Being Animals - As young 5 or 6 years old we made statements declaring any one of us was a particular animal in very matter-of-fact and serious tone. For example, Earth Listener would say things like "I am a wolf," Lunatani said things like "I feel like a dog," and Andraya said things along the lines of "I might look like a girl but I'm a seal." These kinds of statements of being a nonhuman animal was constant throughout our childhood. They only stopped in our preteens because saying such things always got us into trouble to some extent of another. However, we never stopped feeling that way.
Drawing Ourselves As Nonhuman - Even as young as 6 or 7 when told by teachers to draw self-portrait we would draw figures other than our body. Nevado would draw a white dragon, Lunatani would draw a red mutt-like domestic dog, Ravi would draw a tiger, to name a few people recalled being drawn. This sort of response to being asked to draw any sort of self-portrait consistently resulted in us drawing a figure other than our body throughout our childhood. Being reprimanded for not doing the assignment right (if for school) merely led to confusion on our part and us being adamant we did it correctly. As we grew older we learned to always just draw our body when asked for a self-portrait. Though as a teenager several of us took any excuse that they could be found at drawing their real self as well or instead in our art classes. Now that we are an adult, we simply draw what we please.
Pointing Out Photos of Animals As "Me" - Then there was also all the times any number of us pointed out a photograph of a particular animal and said "That is me" or something along those lines. One thing we recall and find interesting is how we always pointed to photographs of animals or very realistic drawings. We wouldn't point at an animated animal character. These sorts of statements began around age 5 or 6 and continued throughout our childhood until we began keeping our feelings and thoughts to ourselves due to fears of being reprimanded or even punished again for making such statements.  Feeling of Being Different Or "Other" - On top of everything we just has a strong and compelling sense of being different than others. We felt like we were trying to live in an alien world trying to be and act in a way counter to what felt natural to us. This sense of being other than everything arose at a fairly young age. We recall certainly feeling it when we were 8 years old. Other children sensed it too, or they certainly acted that way, as other children constantly bullied us for being "weird" or they would simply treat us like we were literally invisible. (To this day we still do not know which treatment was worse.)
Phantom Limbs - Even before our preteen years we would also complain of feeling "invisible tails," "invisible ears," or several other nonhuman characteristics to family and teachers. They, of course, assumed we were playing pretend.  This assumption usually lead to nothing but occasionally we got in trouble for "playing when it was not appropriate." One event we vividly recall occurred in kindergarten where Lunatani cried out when a classmate walked behind us while everyone was seated on the floor and  managed to step on Lunatani's phantom tail. Our teacher got on to Lunatani for disgusting class. We made such statements during our childhood until we learned to keep such strange experiences to ourselves. So by about age 11 we had stopped sharing such things with anyone though such phantom experiences only grew in regularity and detail as the years progressed.
Not Speaking / Making Non-word Sounds - We were late talkers compared to most children having not began to really speak until we were 4 years old. Before and even after that point we instead used a lot of non-word sounds to communicate. The sounds we made included snarling, whining, hissing, snorting, grunting, growling, howling, barking, and various other sounds not as easily described. We also made a lot of sounds from within our throat, which while came naturally to us, was often confusing to people around us. Even as our use of speech grew with pressure to use to it from family and teachers, we still often would slip into non-word sounds at times, especially if surprised or in pain. We also had short spells were we would become non-verbal. During these timeframes that could last only a few minutes to several hours, we would just not know how to form words. The causes of these spells is something we still do not really know. This inclination toward making non-word sounds and occasional lapses into being non-verbal continued on throughout our childhood, into our teenage years, and still prevails into our adult years.
Animalistic Body Language - Along with our inclination towards non-word sounds as a means of communication, we also originally implemented a lot of body language. Much of the body language we had a child had a very animalistic quality to it. Some things we recall using for sure when we were children included baring our teeth, crouching in submission, tilting our head to the side, avoiding eye-to-eye contact, and pacing in one place when agitated. Those being just a few things we did. Our use of body language that differed from the norm was driven inward and suppressed by punishment from our family and teachers though our predisposition toward animalistic body language never could be fully stomped out of us. It simply became more subtle when in public.
Making a Den - One habit we had throughout our childhood we would make what we called "dens." Basically, we would find or make a dark small space to add blankets and pillows to make it a comfortable place to be in. Early on in our childhood our "den" was very simple. We would just drop a blanket over the footrest of a reclining chair to make a dark little place be under. When we got too big for that, around 8 or 9 years old, we used an indoor play tent that we put blankets on top of to make it dark inside. By the time we were into our preteen years, our desire to curl up in a small dark place had diminished but when we did have the occasional want that comfort we would use our closet instead. By the time we were in our teens we had almost entirely grown out of the impulse. The only remaining exception during that time was once when we were a sick with a bad case of the flu and again a year or so later with some other kind of upper respiratory infection that left us sick for several days we ended up back inside our closet laying on a bunch of pillows and blankets. Since our late teens we have not had the impulse to be in or make a "den."
Wearing A "Tail" - Another thing we did as a child was wear things to act as an artificial tail. To do this, we would take a spare purse strap from our mother's closet, attach it to the back loop of our pants, and run around the house with a "tail." We strongly remember doing this when we were 8 and 9 much to our mother's irritation due to it being yet another unusual thing we did. As she often made us take it off when she saw us with it on, we began only wearing it when she was out of the house. She didn't break us to taking the extra purse strap until we were a young teenager. By then, though, the vividness of our phantom limbs had grown to a point we had little desire for an artificial tail
