This 1943 painting by Laura Knight (1877-1970) depicts 21-year-old Ruby Loftus (2921-2004) working at an industrial lathe cutting the screw of a breech-ring for a Bofors anti-aircraft gun. Ruby became an expert in the production of breech-rings in just seven months – something that usually took years. After the war, Ruby and her husband John Green emigrated to Canada and she never worked in a factory or engineering again.

Leader Of The Pack
No matter what you say, but when a girl next to you carries out exemplary service, you yourself always give one hundred percent.
Maybe that is why the calculation of the anti-aircraft installation, where the commander of the anti-aircraft division Victoria serves, is one of the best in the brigade.

An anti-aircraft battery of the National Guard during the Soc Trang I campaign (1950) is using the French Hotchkiss 25mm anti-aircraft gun (or the Japanese Type-96).  Colourized archival photo. Source.
The original post has a long caption explaining the purpose of the first Soc Trang Campaign (from April 4 to April 30, 1950) - which the French and English wikis have nothing about, unsurprisingly. This military offensive by the Viet Minh in the Mekong Delta was an offensive campaign by the armed forces of Zone 9 in the districts of Chau Thanh, Thanh Tri, Ke Sach and a part of Long Phu district (provincial province of Vietnam), with the aim of narrowing the control area, breaking the French defense system as well as shaking the morale of French soldiers in the South.
The National Guard participating in the campaign included:
- Battalion 404 (Southern main force)
- Battalion 402 (Area 9)
- Three independent companies (1089, 1098, 1094)
- Local guerrillas
- A platoon of Issarak (Cambodian resistance force)
The French Force has:
- 2nd Battalion BMRD (2 companies)
- Company 8/RTC
- A company of 90mm cannon.
The campaign takes place in two phases:
- Phase 1 (April 4-11), the National Guard defeated the Bung Trop post (April 4-05), attacked reinforcements on the section of Soc Trang - Bo Thao, and destroyed a French company.
- Phase 2 (from April 12 to 30), conducting armed propaganda among the Khmer people, combining with traffic raiding. Simultaneously, they attacked the My Phuoc fort, blocked reinforcements, and destroyed a platoon, but fighting the fortresses of Xa Vi and Giuoc Dang (Jourdan) was unsuccessful.
This was the first campaign in Zone 9 in the Resistance War against the French. Although the military victory of the National Guard was still limited, it left a lot of experience in combining combat with propaganda, mass mobilization, and construction. building the base of the Khmer ethnic minority area.

The Defenders of Ukraine Are Using Brand New German Caracal Off-Roaders - Technology Org
The war in Ukraine will soon reach its two-year ‘anniversary’. It’s been going on for so long and the end is nowhere in sight. The defenders of Ukraine need tools to protect their country and some of those tools are literally brand new, getting their first taste of action right in the middle of a large armed conflict in Europe.
One of these new tools is the Rheinmetall Caracal. It is a new light off-road vehicle, based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class chassis. The G-Class, of course, was developed with military applications in mind and this new vehicle is rugged, tough and versatile.
The production of Caracal started just this year. Back in November, Rheinmetall announced that 5 Caracal vehicles will be sent to Ukraine by the end of the year and it is believed that they are already in the hands of the defenders of Ukraine.
Caracal features a highly modular construction – all kinds of protective panels and weapons can be mounted to it. Image credit: Rheinmetall
The Caracal is an air-transportable off-roader, primarily aimed at airborne and special operations missions. It weighs under 4.4 tonnes and is just a bare frame, to which various pieces of armoured protection or other equipment can be mounted. Large helicopters like the CH-47F Chinook and CH-53K King Stallion can transport up to two vehicles inside, but the Caracal is happy to travel underslung under the aircraft.
One of the more interesting features of the Caracal is the Rheinmetall’s Rapid Obscuring System (Rosy), which allows this vehicle to deploy a multispectral smoke screen to hide from enemies. All kinds of weapons can be mounted on the Caracal frame, which makes it a very versatile platform.
In images, it can be seen with grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, and anti-tank missiles. The Caracal is an extremely versatile platform – weapons and ballistic protection can be configured for a specific mission. Different Caracals can perform personnel transport, reconnaissance, field ambulance, command post, freight and other duties
The fact that the Caracal is based on the latest G-Class chassis is a great feature too. This means that parts are readily available pretty much everywhere in the world. And the chassis components should be reliable, as they are in such a massive production. Rheinmetall offers full life cycle support over 20 years for Caracal, which shows their confidence in the reliability of this off-roader.

Speaking of the chassis, Caracal has an old-school 6-cylinder Mercedes-Benz diesel, pushing out 183 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. It’s enough for the Caracal to reach 130 km/h on the road and be quite a formidable force off-road. For example, the manufacturer says that Caracal can climb up a 60 % gradient and ford waters as deep as 700 mm.
Ukraine needs all the tools it can get. As this war is turning into a trench warfare with rapid storming assault operations, quick and light off-roaders will be needed. On top of that, the Caracal can fulfill duties of a field ambulance and a cargo vehicle, which is also very important.

Their marching to the tune of 'Anchors Away' suggests different:
We are the ATS marching along
We are the Ack Ack girls
and this is just our marching song
We joined the Royal Artillery
to fight for yours and mine
And when we see a jerry plane
we shoot the blighter
Shoot the blighter down
