Throw grenade!
Paring: Ghost x gender neutral reader
Word count: 1k
Warnings: none (well, there’s obviously content including grenades, a non-dangerous incident with them and a little bit of romantic tension)
Summary: you want to learn to throw hand grenades and to your surprise, Ghost is happy to teach you
---
You had been interested in the things soldiers can do ever since you were a teenager. Their combat skills fascinated you, and before anything else, made you feel safe. Of course, you could have just stayed close to the soldiers, but you wanted to learn something for yourself. So you asked one of them to teach you. He was a lieutenant in the Special Forces, a huge guy with a skull mask. Ghost was the code name he used, but his real name remained a mystery to you. He looked so intimidating, but he had been kind to you.
You didn't really think he'd say yes, you were just an office worker after all, and he certainly wouldn't start training civilians but sometimes the unexpected does happen. And that's how you found yourself on the base's training area with him, wearing a vest and a helmet, and trying your very best to learn how to throw a hand grenade.
“Most importantly, don’t remove the safety pin until you’re ready to throw”, Ghost highlighted. “This is just a practice grenade so nothing’s gonna happen, but treat it like it's the real deal.”
“Roger that, lieutenant”, you nodded. It was a little difficult for you to concentrate, because the man's huge figure was distracting you from his words. His closeness got some butterflies flying in your stomach, and you couldn't help but wonder what his touch would feel like. God damn it, focus! You reproached yourself.
“So, what you gotta do is to place the grenade in the hand you’re better at throwing. Grip the grenade in the palm of your hand with the pull ring pointing up. Use your thumb to put pressure on the safety lever. Make sure you squeeze hard enough unless you want it to explode in your hands. Then, pull off the safety pin with the index or middle finger of your non-throwing hand. Keep squeezing the safety lever until you throw the grenade.”
“Squeeze that flat thing, pull the ring off, throw the grenade?”
“That’s right. Your turn, but don’t throw it yet.” He handed a grenade to you, once more walking you through the process step by step just to be safe. You held the grenade hesitantly in your hand, so Ghost told you to squeeze harder.
“That’s good”, he complimented when your grip was tight enough.
Once you got the hang of holding the grenade and removing the pin, Ghost continued: “Now, when you’re throwing, bring your throwing hand back, keep your non-throwing hand stretched out in front of you in the direction you intend to throw and throw the grenade in a head-over motion. After you have thrown the grenade, seek cover. We’ll be practicing throwing in a standing position, so just drop down on your knee.”
He showed you how to throw the grenade first without actually throwing it and then how to do the whole thing from the beginning. Grenade in hand, pin off, side facing the throwing direction, one arm straight ahead, grenade hand behind, overhead throw, down on one knee and bend down low.
“Ready?” He asked, handing you a new practice grenade.
You nodded and positioned yourself sideways to the throwing direction as the man had shown you. You took a deep breath before pulling off the pin and bringing your hand backwards.
“Throw grenade!” Ghost's command came in the strict military way, making you feel like a real recruit for a moment. As soon as the grenade was released from your grip, the man put his large, warm hand on your shoulder, reminding you to get down. It was no more than a little, innocent touch, but it made a pleasant wave of shivers to rush through your body. Oh God, why did it have to feel so good?
Ghost's hand stayed on your shoulder for only a few seconds, the time it would have taken for the right grenade to explode, and then he moved it aside and stood up.
“Well done. You’re damn natural talent”, he noted, then handing you another grenade.
You blushed and giggled, took the grenade and got ready to throw it. He nodded, and so you repeated what you had previously done - pin off, hand back, wait for the “throw grenade”-command and follow the order. The grenade flew in a beautiful curve and exploded just before hitting the ground. You flinched and turned to look at Ghost, whose eyes twinkled with amusement.
"That was a real grenade!" You breathed, shock clearly visible on your face. You could feel your heart racing, and you were pretty sure he could too.
"I know." The man replied like it was nothing.
“But…”, you started, looking at him like you couldn’t believe what had just happened.
“What? Do you think we have practice grenades with us on the field?”
“No, but you said it’s just a practice grenade!”
“The first one was, yeah. But why not give you a real one when you clearly can handle them?”
“But what if it would have slipped or something?” You asked, your voice still shaky.
“Then I would have dragged you into the trench with me. You would've been all right.” Ghost’s voice was soothing now, and the look in his eyes soft. His hand was still resting on your shoulder, his thumb stroking your skin through your shirt. “I’m a professional, remember? I won't let you get hurt.”
You nodded, slowly relaxing under his touch.
“Look, I didn’t mean to scare you, but I figured it would be better if you thought it was just another practice grenade. That way you wouldn’t think too much about it and the risk of failing would be lower”, he explained calmly.
“Well, it worked”, you admitted.
“As intended. Do you still want to continue or have you had enough?” He then asked.
“Continue!” A smile rose to your lips and you felt excited and confident, despite the scare you had earlier. You had just thrown a real grenade, just like a real soldier would!
“All right, there you go”, Ghost replied, handing you yet another grenade.

Where are you from?
Good question.
Let's say
I came a long long way.
a star child
or
just stardust
golden
or silver
grey
as time goes by.
a journeyman
voyager on a ship called earth.
located in a remote part of a galaxy.
a sceptic when some folks speak
about the crown of creation.
a citizen of a country in the middle of europe.
a country responsible for great wars.
a country that set the world on fire - almost.
rose from ruins and ashes.
a country at peace for almost 80 years.
but what does that mean
when neighbors are worried about their safety?
a man from a small town
a suburb
actually more of a village
but a village with barracks
and a military training area
that used to be
my playground
when i was a child
and knew nothing about the world.
Now I'm getting older
(wiser? i doubt it.).
but there are still so many things i want to know.
Things i want to learn.
Above all, the answer
to the question that
really
really
matters:
Where is this journey leading to?

@badthingshappenbingo - Grief/Mourning
@whumpers-monthly - Delirious
CW: Military whump, cruel prank, delirious. Part of Asrar series. Previous chapter.
--
Panic gripped Corporal Artur's heart, sending adrenaline coursing through his veins. His tousled blond locks trailed behind him as he sprinted, his boots splashing through the damp earth and rustling leaves. The encroaching darkness only added to the urgency; they needed to make it back to the safety of the barracks. Yet, Cadet James was absent.
How could James be so recklessly foolish, blindly following orders without a second thought? Artur cursed inwardly, his grief weighing heavily upon him. He halted for a moment, gasping for breath, his eyes scanning the surroundings in a desperate search for the missing cadet. But James seemed to have vanished into thin air.
"James?"
Silence echoed back. Where could he be?
"Where are you?"
Gradually, the sound of faint whispers grew louder. "C-Corporal?!"
With a renewed sense of purpose, the Corporal quickened his pace, zeroing in on the source of the voice. And there, amidst the dreary scene, he found James—huddled, soaked to the bone in torn attire, adorned with bruises marring his skin, and puffy eyes, evidence of recent tears. The cadet's expression was one of sheer terror.
"T-There was a g-ghost chasing me, C-Corporal," James stuttered, his voice trembling, "I ran out of bullets, but it wouldn't leave, ah!"
A rush of relief flooded through Artur's veins. At least James wasn't badly harmed. He wondered if the stress had pushed him into a state of delirium. Regardless, he extended his hand, offering solace and support.
"There's no ghost, James. It's just your imagination playing tricks on you," Artur assured, his voice laced with sincerity. "Let's head back to the barracks. Dinner will be served soon."
James nodded, albeit hesitantly, his voice barely above a whisper. "C-Can I have some w-water to drink?"
