Ngl I'm surprised you haven't said anything about Yukari yet given how you are with her and how reload made her less bitchy

Slight vague spoilers (general P3/not P3R specific, tho I wish these asks were directed towards my "Silly plays P3R" blog TT0TT):

Oh....oh anon....you don't know how many times I had to stop myself from going on a rant.

Oh it's pissing me off. "But wait she's less bitchy!" That doesn't solve ANYTHING! If I'm suppose to like her despite being bitchy, then why are they making her less bitchy??? It feels like they realize that she's too rough around the edges so they should sand her down! But then that's not Yukari right? Shouldn't we love her despite that? No? Then what's the issue with people hating her being bitchy in the first place?

It feels disingenuous. Just....*inhales* Yeah P3R is reminding me of why I dropped FES the first time I played through it ohhhh boy.

But.....that was just my first reaction. Pre-Fuuka arc. She does feel a lot friendlier.....but some of the content (that feels new rather than retranslated) doesn't.......vibe well with what we know about later.

They DID NOT do a good job showcasing Yukari's discomfort with Mitsuru. Like both presentation or in the voice direction.

Like visually, if you look at the PS2 ver of the "She's too busy for us commoners" 4/20 scene you can see Yukari does NOT look happy to see Mitsuru.

Like R!Yukari's body language DOES NOT change, but in the PS2 ver we can clearly see she's......not feeling comfortable around Mitsu. (due to how P3P operates we miss out on that detail entirely, as the scene also plays out a lot faster/slightly differently but that's for a diff comparison post. This game is suppose to be remaking the original not P3P 8U)

Then it's reinforced with what she says.

The line "She's busy with the student council" type line doesn't really sound (tone wise) hostile in the JPN undub or P3R dub. But I'm guess SOMETHING hostile (either the phrasing used in Jpn, or maybe it's the tone I'm missing out on) because Junpei points it out to her. She then does sound uncomfortable in the JPN undub while trying to be like "oh no it's not like that it's just...." response line.

And in the OG eng dub we can easily hear her hostility no need to explain that. Sounds a bit bitchy but yeah. Then her discomfort in response to Junpei matches the undub's response line.

But P3R???? Her tone in the "She's busy with the student council" line DOES NOT give any type of hostility at all. This doesn't even account for the retranslation of the line (which tones it down even more).

The old line used to be "She's probably busy with things like Student Council, unlike us." and the new line now says "She's not like us. She's busy, you know? With the student council or whatever."

The original translation gave off an inherent hostility we can easily pick up on. The second one, the only flippant thing in there is "or whatever" but after it's prefaced with.....what kinda feels like her DEFENDING Mitsu. The rest of the sentence sounds like she's defending MItsu's behavior, and the "or whatever" feels more like a "and so on" rather than "tch whatever" feel.

Combine that new translation with the new voice direction/actor in P3R......the whole line just.....doesn't hit. Which isn't good because the rest of the scene continues on. Junpei calls her out on hostility, and I'm left here thinking "What hostility???? That's the hostility of a wet paper towel if I've ever seen one!"

Then her defensive response sounds more unsure, and confused (like is she aware she has issues with Mitsu????). TT0TT When in the JPN and original english it sounds more defensive, like she's trying to cover it up hastily.

(oh and this isn't even touching on the worst portraits. Were the OG P3 portraits skrunkly? Yeah. Did they provide a clear vibe tho? Yeah.)

Like is P3R Yukari SURE she's Yukari?

The answer is yeah.

She still makes the same hypocritical errors. Such as harping on eavesdropping on a bully (and then not reporting....to either a teacher or MItsu. Good job keep it up, you're really paralleling Mako here!) And only stepping up because of Junpei making fun of her over a ghost. XP

Or after Fuuka joins. She still HARPS on it so fucking much. "Are we sure she wasn't forced" I dunno Yukari. You barely put up a stink when I joined and said I didn't want to be leader at every fucking turn. Nor did you harp on Junpei joining. NOR do you really bring up feeling forced to join (which I'm pretty sure you can't say that since when you trauma dumped on me you told me you joined to find answers >_>). But yes let's bring it up every 5 seconds, say you'll drop it, then NOT drop it. Even tho Fuuka's fine with it, and literally the only option is to leave the creepy bad place alone????

(what really sticks out with Fuuka is that....she feels fine with it in the scene, doesn't look pressured and.....we really don't get a lot of scenes with Fuuka up to that point so we have NO BASIS on how she usually acts. So it really just makes it look like Yukari wants to just stir the pot for no gd reason)

Then she ropes the new girl into committing a crime, and then NOT consulting her about it before dropping that fucking bomb during a meeting (one she interrupts btw). Acts out, gets her damn answers, keeps acting out. Then suddenly apologizes, Mitsu is like "oh ok", then Yukari is in her room being like "Oh no, did my feelings not get through to her? Did I not express my emotions right?" No it's because you're acting like an asshat! TT0TT I wouldn't accept your apology either like stop it.

Then we get to the damn beach, she finds out the "truth", the Kirijou group (aka Mitsu and her dad) despite not being the actual ones to fuck the world up, still take responsibility. Give her the truth that they know, say "it's really our fault, not your dad's" and Yukari loses it. Acts out in ANOTHER meeting, throws another tantrum. Is mood swinging like a motherfucker (which I get but...), which flips from being upset, to saying horrible things, to apologizing, to saying horrible things again, and rinse repeat. Saying stuff like "I'm jealous her dad gets to live, that's kinda horrible. I'm horrible aren't I?" (man more Mako vibes? Surprised she didn't call herself scum u_u) Like damn, she's losing it. I should totally slap her, that'll make her come to her senses, no? :0 No no I really think that would be good for her. She's at her lowest we should smack her back (to the top). That's how it works.....right? >:( ("Ok ok Silly we know your still hung up on that" and I will never not be hung up on it.....moving on 8U)

The difference is that this version feels off because she just SUDDENLY gets pissy outta nowhere (like there's not a small ramp up, it's just full mania RIGHT NOW! At least the other one was as JARRING)

Voice wise, Heather is fine, it just feel like there's......some stuff missing. Michelle could be TOO bitchy at times, but even with Heather really.......smoothing out all of Yukari's flaws (awww but I thought people loved her flaws??? Why are you smoothing them out? :0) she still is.....deeply unpleasant.

I finally got Aigis (jk at Shinji now), but man.....it was rough getting there. It really reminded me why I dropped FES the first time I played TT0TT Her and Junpei are too much.

Speaking of Junpei (small side rant, but it's because he and Yukari both were wildin' at the same fucking time TT0TT). But his blow up after the Heiro/Lovers fight..........it's just so out there??? TT0TT

I get it's because everyone is praising the leader but man...... it still feels outta left field! I think it should've been placed after Priestess. The built up to that a bit better, plus he could be riding off of having just been saved and acting recklessly.

I dunno the timing just felt off. But Junpei's feels more because of the source. Yukari feels like it's because it's half source and half new voice.

(also funny reaction I had in the Shinji arc: *is morning at school gate* Yukari: Hey! So I've been thinking about Shinji Me: Stop thinking. Every time you think bull shit gets stirred just stop Yukari: Why do you think he rejoined? Me: Why are you so NOSY??? TT0TT Stop it!

The irony is if she actually was THAT NOSY like she always is maybe she could've changed something, but I guess she's just so wishy washy in what she gets nosy about???? TT0TT "I don't like spying on this guy and doing stuff behind his back" *proceeds to spy on Mitsu and do stuff behind her back*. Like she'll go balls to the walls one second, then "eh" the next???? god she's such a hypocrite.....'it's a flaw' and it's an entire person I'd avoid IRL.

But fr, the game's already SHOWED me enough info, but why does it feel the need to really try to spell it out for me??? Those scenes aren't optional what do you think I'm MISSING??? TT0TT)

What gets me is fans are like "oh you can't handle a girl that's a little bit mean" ????? Yeah I don't want to be around someone who is going to be mean to me wtf???? Tldr; Yukari is a hypocritic character that the game seems to not realize. She gets away with a lot of stuff, and is wishy washy on her morals. It's her way or the high way (and this gets worse in the Answer). It doesn't matter how much they try to soften op her voice she still has those faults and is a drag to be around. It doesn't matter how nice she decides to be with me, I can't help but shake the feeling she'll screw me over too. (not as much as I don't trust Junpei, but still enough for me to doubt her word every time she talks).

My beloved friend @lyonface is currently playing Persona 3: Reload for @teenyturtle and I. We're in August.

Everything I enjoy about Yukari's character is overshadowed immensely by the amount of cruelty and venom she shows toward Junpei. I can't imagine being treated so terribly by a friend, or even an acquaintance.

It's unfortunate, considering how much I enjoy her character otherwise.

Just a vent by someone who enjoys Junpei.

Hecatia and the Lunarians

Blame/credit @sukimas for expressing interest in this...

Okay, so, Hecatia gets to talk for a few paragraphs in Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia about Hell's history, and by implication, her own. Eirin and Toyohime each get a full chapter in Cage in Lunatic Runagate and they convey quite a lot of things about the Lunarian mindset and worldview. One thing that's struck me recently is that, although Hecatia is explicitly anti-Lunarian on a far deeper level than any other character who's gotten dialogue (Yukari's probably equally anti-Lunarian but she's less talkative about why), Hecatia is also positioned as a similar kind of entity to the Lunarians.

Firstly, they both tell origin myths about their associated locations which are straightforwardly contrary to both the familiar mythology and a more secular historical analysis. Hecatia talks about Hell originating not as a place of punishment and rehabilitation, but as a construct by powerful people who were uninterested in living according to conventional virtues.

What Hecatia probably means by Hell here is the Greek Tartaros (or Tartarus), which undergoes a historical transformation from an abyssal realm where defeated godlike powers are imprisoned indefinitely (eg in Hesiod) to a place where mortals and some minor immortals who transgressed against the gods were condemned to ironic torments in the more Classical Greek mythological writings.

But Tartaros is just a primordial place in Greek myths at every point. Like Kaos, or Gaea, or Aether, or Ouranos, it's both a deity and a space, part of the early structure of the universe before there are really personalities. Nobody built it.

Similarly, Toyohime tells a story about how the Lunar Capital was created by the great sage Tsukuyomi and their* desire to avoid the spread of impurity and death, and also tells a story identifying the Lunar Capital with the undersea Dragon Palace of Japanese folklore. And this is, in its way, consistent both with the textual tradition in which Tsukuyomi is the killer of the food goddess Ukemochi out of disgust with how she vomits food out, and also the fact that Tsukuyomi is a god without much cultic presence, a figure mostly in primordial mythology, unlike their very active siblings Amaterasu and Susanoo. (There are a couple shrines to them, especially as subordinate parts of large Amaterasu shrine complexes. But not many.)

But it's also not really derived from the mythology directly, and it's not quite drawing upon a clear historical transformation- Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto seems to have always been primarily a literary figure, distant from practical religion.

Now, the Lunarians reject divinity, in the sense of rejecting the obligation to humans that being a kami in a shrine requires, the interactions and subordination to ritual. Hecatia also describes her original Hell as a place where people reject rules they don't like. So we also have this interesting convergence- these two sets of figures who assert a separate history of their own existence, disconnected from what ordinary humans thought then or now, also share in this kind of symbolic disconnect.

So one way of looking at their alternate histories is to treat them as assertions about the world and the universe more than statements of plain fact, which is definitely workable within the fictional context as well- Hecatia is manipulating Aya in her interview, Toyohime doesn't know the full details of the "history of the moon" and is to an extent repeating what she's been told. There's been quite a lot of good meta about those worldviews you can go read.

But another similarity that falls out of this analysis is that both sides of this pair exist in a state of relative freedom within Touhou cosmology, because the Lunarians are figures of literary myths who don't have to be reconciled with their behavior at the shrine, and Hekate is a famously confusing and difficult figure within the Greek and later Greco-Roman mythological complex- Hesiod presents her as a kind of universal helpful figure, as does the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, but other sources from early periods present her as sketchy or hellish. Still later, she would become treated as a nearly-omnipotent goddess in some of the Greek Magical Papyri- but what we know about her cult and position today is limited and even contemporary writers seem confused.

Hecatia is thus free in the cracks, because human imagination and human history have left her with great latitude, just like the objects of her distaste, the Lunarians. I suppose in a way it's the contempt bred of familiarity- you have all this freedom and this is how you use it? etc.

*Tsukuyomi's gender is unclear, according to Wikipedia in English, even given early poetic sources that refer to them in masculine terms. So I suspect there's some real uncertainty going on in the scholarship too.

I think Playkari is the only one I "like" and even then she still slaps Mitsu in a later play. So I can only say I like the 1st play version as of right now.

This is partially cause Playkari and the play go full rewrite. "This wouldn't fly in the game, but god is it so much better." Playkari ISN'T Yukari. She's a diff character in Yukari's role.

P3R!Yukari is just the same with a less bitchier voice. But she still makes the same key mistakes/issues I have with OG Yukari.

Turns out Ikutsuki is not going to help me study alone, he’s going to wrangle everyone into one big study group. Dunno how effective the studying is when he and Junpei get into a pun-off, but whatever. It’s nice to have everyone together and not fighting.

Once exams are over, we make plans to go do something fun. While Yukari leaves to get Fuuka, Junpei and I have a little chat.

I love that you can play Minato as a completely oblivious airhead. But I do not.

On our way outside, Ikutsuki introduces us to our new dorm-mate, Ken, who will be staying with us over the summer. He has potential, so he might be a good candidate for joining SEES!

...Ikutsuki, recruiting teenagers with attitude is one thing, but you’re crossing the line towards “child soldiers”, my guy. I know Wild Cards have awakened at age 7, but they didn’t actually have to do stuff til they were 16 or 17!

He’s gonna be staying in the dorm, so we’re not allowed to mention shadows or fighting or whatever in front of him. Even though Ikutsuki just mentioned “the potential” in front of him. Akihiko also looked really uncomfortable around him, and it’s clear he knows Ken somehow, so… Yeah.

Ikutsuki sends me off to the antique shop that’s now open, because the antique shop can help me. The same way the police officer helps, apparently.

This lady runs the weapon fusion menu, and also where I can exchange all my gemstones I’ve been getting. She knows Officer Kurosawa, and ALSO explicitly knows about shadows?? What has Ikutsuki told you, ma’am? Were you involved ten years ago? Do you know about Tarta--

Oh I want that megidolaon skill card so bad. God. Don’t show me that when I know I won’t be able to afford it for ages.

Anyway, we are off to Yakushima, and Mitsuru’s vacation home is enormous. I wish we got to actually run around in it, but what we do see is pretty nice.

Why is Mitsuru so pretty I’m gonna die

Yakushima really is beautiful and I’m kinda sad I couldn’t cut off the UI for a minute.

Elizabeth asked me to bring her back something from the beach. I found a pretty shell, some driftwood, a piece of weird seaweed, and…

Mitsuru talks to her dad, and I have made an exciting discovery: A living, onscreen parent who does not suck!

He wants her to open up to others more and work together, because…

That’s a pretty good motto, actually. It would help if people playing this game knew what the Nanjo Group was. And despite being in green, meaning it has a definition in the glossary, the glossary just explains the motto again. X’D

The Nanjo Group is where the Kirijo Group got all it’s psience tech from, because they bought out SEBEC after Kandori tried to become god back in 1996. SEBEC had the original prototypes for anti-shadow suppression weapons, and PROBABLY also the teleporter technology from the DEVA System. I think I mentioned before that I think that’s what the teleporters in Tartarus are based on.

Plus, the Nanjo family is all about being Number One, so “two in harmony” is a pretty good shot at them. And that’s definitely lost if you don’t know anything about them. X’’’D

Mr. Kirijo gathers everyone together, because he’s going to tell us the truth. And the truth is, his father was trying to create a time manipulation machine. So it makes sense that their research fucked up time so badly that there’s an extra hour of the day now. But apparently, that attempt to create time manipulation warped into something worse over the course of the project, and Yukari’s dad caused the explosion to stop him.

Yukari is completely freaked out by this realization, because she’d always maintained that the accident wasn’t her dad’s fault. So hearing that he caused it on purpose sends her reeling, and she runs off. Minato follows her to the beach to talk, and it’s a good conversation, actually.

The next day, the girls are on an awkward nature hike (because Mitsuru and Yukari aren’t speaking), when they get a call from Ikutsuki.

We’ve got girls who aren’t interested, girls who are pissy that high-schoolers are at the island resort (who then get even more pissy when they find out we’re at a friend’s summer home, because THEY had to save up to come here), girls who humor us for like ten minutes before revealing they have boyfriends…

And then one last lady, who has been observing, and reads us all to absolute filth about how our tactics are all wrong.

She might be interested, though. And she wants us to help put on sunscreen!

Speaking of home, back at home, Shinji is trading information with those three weirdo assassins in exchange for some kind of pills, which can’t be a good sign because he looks like he’s in actual pain. Weirdo Squad is angry that we want to destroy the Dark Hour because they like having special powers.

They also call Tartarus the “Tower of Demise”, though, so like obviously they realize this is a bad thing.

After we get back from Yakushima, Aigis tries to stay in my room, including waking me up five minutes before my alarm. Which. No. You cannot stay in here. Oh god. My new robot has separation anxiety.

My social links may not be deals for things that can help in battle, but they do make me feel warm and fuzzy.

I go out with Akihiko again because he still owes me food for last time, and we get accosted by the punks from before, who have returned with an even bigger group, because apparently the best way to win is by fighting a guy eight-on-one. Are you proud of yourself, dude? Does that make you feel cool?

We didn’t actually fight because we distracted them long enough to get out of there, so no police this time. But I did learn that Akihiko does have parents! He has foster parents that love him and send him enough expensive snacks to share with the whole dorm. It’s nice. ^_^

My online friend in my MMO is definitely a teacher at my school, based on her complaining about "Mr. E". Which, you and me both lady. Dude thinks he's a wizard or something.

Speaking of Mr. Edogawa, he mentioned Carl Jung in class! While talking about alchemists, because school is still insane. Literally we’re going on summer break tomorrow, give it a rest.

Which I guess is why Ken hadn’t moved in yet, but… Did we miss like a week of school while we were in Yakushima? Hot damn.

Ken is officially moved in now, though, and despite not being able to discuss shadows or the Dark Hour around him, he apparently knows Aigis is a robot. So… Uh… How secretive are we supposed to be being?

And it FINALLY let me go back to Tartarus and check out the new area, which is very industrial. It’s cool. Very different vibe from the big faces. I actually like it.

New portal doors that lead to Grand Clocks now have a chance to show up, so I can boost teammates’ levels to match Minato’s? Which is interesting. And more importantly, new “Monad” doors are appearing that lead to stronger fights.

Calling it Monad makes me a little weirded out, but hey, it's not a mandala and there’s good treasure in here. So we’re probably going in headfirst every time they show up. XDD

Saved back at the Tartarus entrance, so next time is probably just going to be some more fighting. We’ll see. ^_^

So the Persona 3 remake is a thing now, anything you hope to see in it?

I sure do hope that we get the Answer as well as FeMC without needing to buy DLC, but who am I kidding? It's Atlus. Of course it's gonna be DLC.

I'm hoping it's good. I'm hoping it's done by the same people that did P5 Royal, because P5R was the actual Persona 5 that many Persona 5 fans claimed the original game was, and I would like to play a Persona 3 that is also actually good (pretend for a moment that there's no Portable)

Because it was not good. I played through the entirety of P3FES and I loved it but like 60% of that game is Not Good. And I don't just mean like how the male MC has like 3 good social links and the rest vary from bland to Kenji's, I mean shit like needing to put anti-Charm items on the girls before the last boss or else the boss charms Yukari or Mitsuru and they cast Diarahan on him and reset the progress of a bossfight that's an hour long is Not Good.

P3 had RNG skill inheritance back then, where you just reset your PS2 (or emulator) repeatedly to get a fusion you actually wanted. Physical sucked so much that Thanatos, the Persona on the cover of the game, only served as a Messiah ingredient because otherwise he was incredibly underwhelming. Team balance was also pretty bad, like Aigis had Every Single Team Buff move in the game so you were actually screwing yourself over if you didn't bring her to every fight meanwhile Junpei quickly became useless as you progressed.

I have many, many things I'm hoping for with P3R. I'm looking forward to it!

-yukari/mitsuru p3. their weird involvement with each other really got me and I LOVE talking about them they kinda hit me like a truck and I was like OHHHH HDHFJF and didn’t expect to like them much. I expected akishinji to be my big one, and though I do love em, these two fuckin. Came in and stole my attention djfjfjf

-naoto/rise p4 (though for the record to be clear this is not an anti naoto/kanji space, i like em! I just got more into the other dynamic especially cause of really good fanart on here of em tbh sjdjdjd) i just really like the possible dynamic here which I also loovveee talking about

And then other ones I just like generally is mostly Yu/Yosuke and Aki/Shinji who i also love talking about. Also from all the exposure I have to p2 so far and all the research I’ve done for it. Tatsuya and Jun. crazy. CRAZY!

I very specifically in certain scenarios like the toxic joker/akechi thing. They’re not my biggest interest I just think a lot of it is really funny and crazy but my best friend loves ‘em a lot so we talk about them frequently! sjdjdjd

I’m also not exclusively only into like. ‘Queer’ slash same gender character ships, this has just come up a lot in this series so I dunno !

Other than that though I also just think everyone in p4 is super queer. I mean. I feel like that could be said for all the casts. But p4 is very like. I feel like these people are all dating other members of the group. (Like yu and yosuke, yukiko and chie, the stuff going on with rise naoto and kanji. And then like. Teddie is there but he’s. Teddie. And definitely isn’t escaping the queer allegations he’s just not in a ship for me he’s like. A little guy. A lil bear. Silly thing).

He’s the self proclaimed dynamite flower of the “S”. He uses all sorts of dirty tricks against his opponents but in real life he’s a mild mannered city florist. Reki and the others call him “old man” but he’s only 24.

Anti-hero guise When he participates in the “S” he wears flashy clothes and make up and calls himself the “Anti-hero of the ‘S’“. He has various tricks that all have flower names like Haemanthus bomb, Gladiolus Laser, and Violet spider which is so like him.

He’s in love with his shop manager In his normal life he’s a kind hearted florist who treats elderly people with care and respect. It is at this shop that he’s found someone he’s in love with. That person is the shop manager and he decided to enter the tournament so that he can show her he’s a strong man.

When did he become the babysitter!? Since he can drive, he gets used as transportation by Reki and the others, but before he even knew what was happening he was acting as a babysitter. When they go to Miyakojima for the healing hot spring, he acted as a fine chaperone to the group of minors.

Director Utsumi Comment We didn’t just want them all to be good looking, we wanted there to be a variety in the character designs. Having just one character like that would even make the comical scenes more comical. Once Shadow was created, the range of the characters was expanded and I distinctly remember Chiba-san saying “now we’re talking!” (lol). We thought it would be good if there was a gap between his real life and his “S” persona so we all looked for a cute job for him to have and we settled on a florist. Chiba-san and the key artists all had a good time drawing him and he was especially popular among the male staff.

Character Designer Chiba Michinori Comment I came up with the idea after discussing rock bands with Director Utsumi, and wondered if I could make a character like that and so I made the design. If I remember correctly, we made Shadow first and then Hiromi-chan after. It’s easy to make him have funny faces and so I feel like he was the most popular among the art staff.

Colorist Gotou Yukari Comment  Director Utsumi told me his hair should be orange or yellow and his skin should be slightly darker. Since he was going to wear white make up when he became Shadow I made his natural skin a color so you could easily tell the difference. Since he plays an Anti-hero, while I wanted to make  “S” costume all black to give him a villainous image, since he works at a flower show in his daily life I made his piercings and the spikes on his clothes pink to give him a bit of hidden cuteness. Also, he’s made to look like a flower with the paint around his eyes being green and his orange hair. Even when Hiromi is in his full Shadow mode, there’s still parts of him being a florist in there.
