@steddiemas Day 31: New Year's Eve Traditions & Activities
Happy New Year everyone! Just a short little Steddie ringing in 1987 to round out steddiemas. Thank you so much to @steddieasitgoes for creating and hosting this event. I had so much fun writing festive Steddie things all month and I hope everyone enjoyed!
“Happy New Year, Stevie,” Eddie says as he shimmies under the covers.
He hums contentedly, curling a grabby hand up from under their blanket, beckoning Steve to join him.
“Is it twelve already!” Steve exclaims, one knee on the bed.
He stills, squinting at (his) clock on Eddie’s side of the bed but can’t make out the numbers.
“Nope,” Eddie hums, “It’s only 10 pm. A hard-earned early night, I’d say.”
He grins, his closed eyes crinkling at the edges.
Steve scoffs, folding back the plaid bed sheets.
“Who are we?” he mutters, “10 pm…”
He moves into position with ease, tangling his legs with Eddie’s and resting his head on his chest. Steve tucks his hand just under Eddie’s long-sleeved flannel sleep shirt, resting his palm against puckered skin that has only just started to feel like it’s healing. Well, as best as the half-chewed-up left side of Eddie’s body can heal...
He squeezes Eddie tight, greedily holding him as close as possible, wishing away thoughts of this past Spring.
Eddie must sense it because soon a hand is in his hair, gently scratching at his scalp. His eyes droop at the sensation.
“Plans for ‘87, sweetheart?” Eddie wonders aloud, breaking a long moment of silence.
His chest thrums with every word, a steady heartbeat going along with it.
“A year with you…” Steve sighs, letting his eyes fall shut.
“Sap,” Eddie chuckles, even though he still kisses the top of his head.
“And…” he yawns, “Not a monster in sight.”
“Sounds… good,” Eddie agrees, just as sleepy.

Hey fun fact about BG3’s development process is that they actually had to take the line “loyal as a pup and twice as pretty” away from Shadowheart after EA for public safety reasons. Only one drop-dead gorgeous woman with outrageous mommy issues is allowed to say that line per year in order to prevent complete and utter lesbian catastrophe (self explanatory) and Mara Sov had already said it to Petra Venj offscreen upwards of 10 times by the time that BG3 released. Absolutely a bummer but maybe they’ll give it back to Shadowheart next year. Rooting for you guys.

If you're still doing the favourite art for the characters which is your fav for Hrid, Kaden and Keaton?
Oooh, a triple feature. This'll be fun >:3
Sadly for each of these guys, they only have one alt and two art pieces between them so it won't be TOO much thinking.
Ok, let's start off with our Chilly Prince Charming. While I respect Maeshima Shigeki bringing us the OG Hrid, I've gotta say his 2/3 profile in his attack portrait looks a little weird. So we're going with Argon:
Argon uses nice, vibrant colors to make Hrid's art pop out, and even though Hrid is meant to be more on the cooler side, gives him a nice smile for his art. Also DANG do his eyes really stand out in this picture.
Keaton... While I did say it'd be easier due to having only two artists, I am a little torn on this one because I feel like there's bits in both I like. I think ultimately I'm gonna pick Meka:
Meka's artwork has always had some pretty strong posing most of the time, and has a color style that, while not as super intricate as most of the other artists, was effective and definitely made the art eye-catching with the stark colors. Also great expressions, though I will say that Keaton's neutral portrait has kind of a derpy looking expression. Okuma Yugo's Keaton was definitely great, but I feel the posing wasn't as strong and his face was kind of too young-looking. Keaton always gave me more mid-20's vibes.
And finally, we have our golden boy, Kaden. Gonna go with his OG art by Kusugi Toku:
No offense to Yakiniku, but while it was pretty good art, I was really thrown off by how creepy his hands looked, and how dead-eyed he was. Kusugi's Kaden has a lot more life in the eyes, and I think the way they did the color, lighting, and shading really compliments Kaden's lustrous fur/hair. Plus I feel the expressions were a little better.
Now if only these three got an alt that wasn't the obligatory New Years alts...

welp, i tested positive for covid this morning, lmao. i had to cancel class tomorrow.
hopefully i can gather the energy to record a little lecture or something so that students get some of the background they're hoping for (basically this week was the "how to read middle english" primer/refresher course). overall it's fairly mild, so as long as i don't have a fever on friday, i'm going to go to class (masked, of course) and we can talk about the poems i'm having them read. i'm gonna struggle to be heard through the mask, but alas. we'll have to make do.
other than that, i have two students from my summer course who didn't submit their work by the extended deadline (last friday), which was the very last day i'm technically allowed to accept late work. one of them might?? maybe???? be submitting something by tonight?? she emailed at like 3 in the morning on saturday asking for a couple of extra days. i answered yesterday telling her that if she got something to me by 10pm tonight, then i would make it work (grades are due tomorrow lol), but if not, then she would have to file a petition for a term work extension with the registrar. the other one is... i think?? in the process of submitting such a petition.
i'm just here sitting on my couch surrounded by tissues and trying to get some of my shit together, lol.

Coming from a rest-of-the-world voter who's been a Eurovision fan since the late 2000's: Loreen is actually my number 1, but I honestly think that Finland winning would be more interesting and much more deserving. I didn't vote for Loreen because I know she'll already be getting more points from the Jury already (predictable). My votes are better off spent for the others in my top 3 like Finland and Serbia. I'm sad that Serbia didn't even get in the top 10 while Israel got in there. I'm happy that my favorite won, but I'm also sad that Finland couldn't get the chance to showcase their country, language, and music. I'm in a weird duality right now if that makes any sense. I wish they'll change the percentage of the Jury vote next year if they can't fully remove it.
Thank you. I agree with what you said and I'm sorry that Serbia didn't get more points. I think that both Slovenia and Serbia lost a decent amount of points because Montenegro and North Macedonia didn't participate, but at the same we saw all of the ex-Yugo countries in the final together which was amazing and worth celebrating.
I also see where you're coming from, as in 2018 my favourite was Israel but later I've been thinking that Cyprus should have won after all as it would have been their first time winning. Same with 2021, I was happy that Italy won after being screwed over by the juries so many times, but at the same time I liked France's entry more and they had been waiting for their win way longer. The fact that we don't get to host and showcase our country, culture, language, a new host city, to the world that makes me really sad, especially when the public vote made clear that there is acceptance and interest for Finland, Finnishness and everything it represents.
