Xia Meng, also known as Hsia Moog or Miranda Yang (Sunrise, Bride Hunter)—For those who are familiar with Hong Kong's early cinema, Xia Meng is THE leading woman of an era, the earliest "silver-screen goddess", "The Great Beauty" and "Audrey Hepburn of the East". Xia Meng starred in 38 films in her 17-year career, and famously had rarely any flops, from her first film at the age of 18 to her last at the age of 35. She was a rare all-round actress in Mandarin-language films, acting, singing, and dancing with an enchanting ease in films of diverse genres, from contemporary drama to period operas. She was regarded as the "crown princess" among the "Three Princesses of the Great Wall", the iconic leading stars of the Great Wall Movie Enterprises, which was Hong Kong's leading left-wing studio in the 1950s-60s. At the time, Hong Kong cinema had only just taken off, but Xia Meng's influence had already spread out to China, Singapore, etc. Overseas Chinese-language magazines and newspapers often featured her on their covers. The famous HK wuxia novelist Jin Yong had such a huge crush on her that he made up a whole fake identity as a nobody-screenwriter to join the Great Wall studio just so he can write scripts for her. He famously said, "No one has really seen how beautiful Xi Shi (one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China) is, I think she should be just like Xia Meng to live up to her name." In 1980, she returned to the HK film industry by forming the Bluebird Movie Enterprises. As a producer with a heart for the community, she wanted to make a film on the Vietnam War and the many Vietnam War refugees migrating to Hong Kong. She approached director Ann Hui and produced the debut film Boat People (1982), a globally successful movie and landmark feature for Hong Kong New Wave, which won several awards including the best picture and best director in the second Hong Kong Film Award. Years later, Ann Hui looked back on her collaboration with Xia Meng, "I'm very grateful to her for allowing me to make what is probably the best film I've ever made in my life."

glimmers of Amsterdam. • I was able to visit the Anne Frank Huis but didn’t anticipate the emotions that live within the walls of that house. I was startled and I could sense those within my group being equally overwhelmed with emotion.

one thing that has deeply resonated is, the gift that I have in this incarnation to live as freely as I do. sometimes it’s easy to become fixated, and I then overlook the opportunities I’m afforded year after year. my gratitude practice may be present but I’ve seen how it’s shifted over the last ten years.

So my hope for the next coming months is to fall deeply into the simplicity of living with gratitude. to celebrate even the opportunity to try over and over and over again….I’ll head to a formalized program again next year and I can already feel this being a lesson in the coming semester. Along with my work picking up momentum, an eternal practice of patience.

Anywho, I’ve since departed from Amsterdam and am making my way through Germany.

Anne Frank was born on this day in 1929 - if she had survived the holocaust she may have been celebrating her 94th birthday today. i’ve been going over what i want to say all month and i’m not sure. it’s hard to put into words a feeling of connection i feel to someone i never met, never even lived at the same time as, let alone experienced the same level of horrific events. but despite the clear differences in our lives, i’ve felt a strong to connection to anne since i first read her diary when I was 10/11. if you also get special interests, this feeling may be understandable to you. visiting the anne frank huis was a spiritual experience for me. i saw so much of myself in her and she made me feel like i wasn’t alone. we were both hugely ambitious, cheeky, big fan girls, often feeling misperceived. i carry her words in my heart, they feel so engrained in my being.

Anne deserved the life she dreamed of - of becoming a famous movie star or author. My heart breaks thinking of everything she had left to offer the world and all the experiences she should’ve had. i read the other writings anne did in the secret annex for the first time last year and i was struck upon reflection when i was deciding what to draw for her birthday, how many of her stories ended with a girl finding peace in nature. i don’t take for granted every aspect of my life that she envied in hiding and now, when i’m in nature, i think of her and wish that heaven really does exist, or maybe even an alternate universe where anne gets to be in the nature she dreamed of. knowing there’s nothing i can do to change the past leaves me feeling so much grief, but i at least hope i can contribute to keeping anne’s memory alive.

what the fuck. waarom zou je je vakantie in godsvredesnaam door tiktok laten plannen. waarom zou je überhaupt uren (meervoud!!!) in de rij staan voor een zakje patat. er bestaat geen friet op aarde die zoveel beter is dan die van een tent om de hoek dat het uren in de rij staan volstaat. in die tijd kun je letterlijk* van de ene kant van Amsterdam naar de andere fietsen en ruim tijd overhouden voor een bezoek aan het Anne Frank huis. en dan kies je ervoor om die tijd te besteden aan in de rij staan. voor patat. gefrituurde aardappelreepjes. je hebt een paar dagen dat je op vakantie bent en de bestemming kan bekijken. en dan kies je ervoor om die kostbare tijd naar de rug van de wachtende voor je te staren. ik snap hier dus geen snars van. ergens wil ik het kunnen onderschrijven aan tiktok brain rot, maar dat is een te gemakkelijke uitweg. dit voelt meer als blablabla leven door de lens van social media blablabla the Matrix blablabla iets in die zin

*vanaf Dierenopvang Amsterdam (~westerse uithoek) naar Science Park (~oosterse uithoek) is precies een uurtje. i know omdat ik maandenlang naar beide heb gefietst (niet tegelijkertijd) en tussen die twee locaties in woon. bedenk me nu ook dat je t kunt checken met een Maps app, maar die zijn niet altijd even accurate met tijdsinschattingen
