Hi! Can you do roommates au for kuroo, oikawa, iwachan and atsumu?
hi!! thank you for requesting i hope you like these!!
Tumblr media
kuroo tetsurō
kuroo as a roommate is both the best and worst thing that’s ever happened to you
for one, you always have a tutor in case you need help
and he’s really good at keeping you in check
will always make sure u eat, sleep well, manage your time
stuff like that
but
BUT
he’s so messy pls
like every room might as well be kuroo’s room because his stuff is always everywhere
this is only a good thing when his shirt/hoodies end up in your domain
bc this guy’s like 6’1? 6’2? doesn’t matter who you are his clothes are comfy whether they fit right or dwarf you
does not know how to clean
at all
like how difficult can cleaning be??? idk ask kuroo
he’s really good at picking up new habits though so he’s your designated cook
cleaning is on you, cooking is on him
i hope that’s okay w u bc otherwise u will not survive 😃
he’s so big on cuddling
he’ll ask you to sleep in the same bed constant nights
at first it’s so ??? weird???
like why would u???
but then u find that it’s actually kinda nice
it’s a great way to destress bc as soon as ur cuddling ur mind just turns off
@ the tutor thing
he’s a really good teacher
but his notes?
get ur own <3
literally no one but kuroo can understand them so good luck g
anyways overall he’s a great roommate good job on scoring this hunk of a man 😻
oikawa tōru
first few months, he completely avoids you
weird i know i know
but oikawa is not someone that just opens up to anyone yk? he’s very selective. it takes a while for him to trust you
but you live in the same house so it’s inevitable
it’s not that he avoided you per se but he kept your interactions to a minimum
which had been fine by you! he was respectful of your privacy, did his part to maintain the house while you did yours, etc
it’s when he starts getting comfortable that’s the problem
i think it would happen spontaneously and you two would stay up s o late together out of nowhere and suddenly you’d know each other’s deepest darkest secrets
believes in those roommate bonding activities
friday nights are reserved for the two of you, and that’s a set rule. only extreme cases have priority over it
can’t cook and can’t clean
but he’s so good at lifting up his legs while you vacuum <3
literally if you leave for the weekend you come back to an unrecognizable home
the amount of shit he’s broken bc of volleyball like literally go play anywhere else
overall he’s a great roommate because he’s both respectful of your boundaries and genuinely really fun to have around
(so fucking annoying though sometimes you just wanna suffocate him in his sleep hehe)
iwaizumi hajime
best roommate hands down he’s the perfect candidate oh my god
he will cook
and he will clean
he’ll be respectful
he’ll help you with your work
only issue is he’s a bit standoffish you’ll think he hates you for the longest time
until you just straight up ask him “do you hate me?”
and he’ll be genuinely so shocked like “no! what? why would i live with you if i hated you? what?”
god he’s so precious
i see iwa as someone that likes routine
so it’d be great if you can adapt to that/adapt to his routine specifically
you two split the work evenly so well
like if he takes care of breakfast (cooks or it buys it), dinner is on you
spring cleaning is actually so fun with hajime because he actually puts in as much effort as you
but also
you’re blasting some music on the speakers and using the broom as a mic that he can’t help but let loose tbh
he learns your quips so well overtime it’s amazing he just
he just knows you so well is he psychic or some shit???
will never force you to like do any bonding activities but i see you two just playing a shit ton of boardgames together, things like monopoly
loser gets extra chores hehe
god i want roommate iwa in my life so bad
a really good roommate because of the fact that he’s super mature and a really thoughtful person in general
miya atsumu
worst one
he’s the WORST
like oikawa can’t cook or clean, but he has some redeeming qualities. atsumu?? none !
im kidding y’all he’s the cutest i would die to have him as my roommate
he’s so
energetic?
your first night as roommates he just waltzes into your room and drags you out to the living room where the tv is already set up, two large pizzas and so many wedges have been ordered, and drinks <3
spends the entire time getting to know you
he learns to live with you really easily tbh like he adapts so quick
he’s so used to sharing bc he’s a twin, so nothing ever properly bothers him
he can’t cook, but he does watch you and tries to learn from you
he’ll do very basic things like you can leave breakfast safely to him
after minimum 2 months of practice
he likes to be very involved and likes to involve you just as much
he’s not nosy he’s just curious leave him be 🥺
there is always one day a month where it’s just the two of you going out
to like a carnival
amusement park
ice skating
all that stuff. it’s necessary
i need to clarify that 3 am drives to get mcdonalds take out is a very regular thing with atsumu
driving up a hill and sitting on the hood of your car while you get some nuggets and stare at the city skyline beneath you
immaculate vibes
a really fun roommate tbh no regrets with this one you will never feel like shit and even if you do
what are the 3 am drives for amiright 😻
Tumblr media
end note; i hope that was good, and that the requester and everyone else enjoyed that!! like always, requests are open <333
thank you to everyone that’s voted about the smau thing! i’ll wait a little while longer before deciding who won, and hopefully, i’ll have the first few chapters up soon!! mwah <3

Pegoryu Week!! Day 5: Summertime Sadness
Akira has now been in his hometown for 3 months. He really missed the friends he made in Tokyo because he felt they were the most genuine friends he’s had. In his hometown, he had a few friends, but he never felt the bonds that he built with the Phantom Thieves with his other friends. He missed his lover, Ryuji, most. Akira’s parents longed for his return from Tokyo, because they know he definitely didn’t deserve the punishment he got. They were ecstatic to learn that he had an amazing time in Tokyo, though. They were worried that the environment there would be too much for him, because they knew he had trouble adapting to new environments, let alone crowded places with tons of different people moving everywhere at all times. Perhaps, that was the beauty of it. No one really knows you, and you don’t know them, yet you take the same train ride everyday, and some days you wondered where they were when they weren’t there. It was sort of a pure trusting reliance on others within your environment, without knowing who they are.
Akira’s old high school had let him back in despite the old criminal record. Akira had been doing well in school in general, but rumors were much more invasive there than they were at Shujin. People were still talking about it three months in. Akira was relieved when summer break started so he didn’t have to deal with the rumors. He hoped they would just die out by September.
Akira still texted all of his friends back in Tokyo everyday. Makoto found a university in the south end of Tokyo that she loved because of its prestigious reputation, challenging honors student program, and overall positive student body. Haru found a university up north with tons of greenhouses and gardens where she majors in botany. Yusuke entered his third year at Kosei. Sojiro enrolled Futaba in Shujin for her first year of high school and Morgana lives with them. Ann, Mishima, and Ryuji entered their third year at Shujin and ended up being in the same class. Ryuji and Ann both agree that Shujin isn’t the same without Makoto, Shiho, Haru, or Akira. Ryuji and Akira try to get together as much as possible but they have tight schedules. Ryuji joined a city-wide track team that keeps him super busy, yet on his best behavior. Akira started a club at his school for students who feel misunderstood or challenged by societal norms. He’s seen it all. Students who face racism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia. Akira uses these students’ stories to empower the other students into creating a welcoming, open place for students who aren’t the same as the others.
Akira received a text from Ryuji. “Practices were cancelled this weekend. U free?”
“Yeah. Wanna go get some ramen and then go to the beach?”
“Hell yeah.”
They met up in Ogikubo around 1:00 that Saturday. When they saw each other, all they could do was embrace each other. They were both at a loss of words to describe how much they missed each other. Ryuji broke the silence by saying he was starving and that they should go in. They filled in the past three months with each other. Jokes were exchanged and after a while, they finished eating and headed to the beach. Akira took them in his car. All the way they blasted Lana del Rey like it was nobody’s business. Some notable songs were “Doin Time”, “Young and Beautiful”, “Salvatore”, and “Love.”
When they finally arrived at the beach, they changed into their bathing suits and picked out a spot to lay out their towels and umbrella. They brought a battery powered bluetooth speaker with them to play more music. If you could think of a gay bop, it probably played. “Cherry” by Rina Sawayama, “Mine” by Slayyyter, and “Lucky Strike” by Troye Sivan, to name a few. After about an hour of sitting, tanning, talking, singing, awkwardly dancing, and admiring each other in the sun, they decided to go take a dip in the water. The water was cool, but not too cool. High tide was rolling in. The waves were perfect for pretending to be human surfboards and trying to “ride the waves.” They ran around and laughed with each other for hours. Before they knew it, it was 5:00. They decided to gather their stuff, and get some dessert.
They went to the usual crepe stand in Shibuya. They both agreed not to tell Ann they went there without her because she’d be so jealous. After eating crepes, Akira decided to crash at Ryuji’s place for the night and meet up with the others tomorrow.
The next day was filled with shopping, catching up, and reminiscing. After most of them left. Akira took a brief visit to Leblanc to catch up with Sojiro. Afterwards, Ryuji started driving Akira to his hometown, as a way of thanking him for the fun weekend. As they got closer to Akira’s hometown, they could both tell that they weren’t going to see each other in a long time. It didn’t help that all they were listening to was sad music, either. When they arrived in his town, Akira took Ryuji to one of his favorite spots. He took him up a steep, dirt road that led to the top of a mountain that overlooked the town. They decided they would talk there for a bit and maybe plan when they could see each other again. After about twenty minutes of nonsensical small talk, they looked each other in their moonlight eyes and shared a passionate kiss. As they separated they both felt the other’s tears staining their cheeks.
“Think I’ll miss you forever.
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky.
Later’s better than never.
Even if you’re gone I’m gonna drive.”

ghost i hope u feel better! if u wanna do takaeishi requests maybe like a movie drabble or smth?
tysm hoyoung!!! I feel a lot better now that i had something to focus on :’D I really appreciate you sending the ask!!
Okay so Takaeishi movie drabble!! I decided to take that and make it a horror movie marathon on Halloween if thats ok!
“Is this really necessary?” Karasuma asks, entering back into his living room to see the chaos that’s unfolded. Blankets strewn about, all of different colors and patterns, with additional pillows and a few sleeping bags haphazardly thrown to the floor. Bowls full of chips lay next to his friends, as well as a few liters of drinks.
Sagisawa and Umino sit on the floor, contemplating the various DVD cases that they’ve aligned in a row, and one of them occasionally mutters and shuffles the order, the other nodding feverishly.
Kamoda grins at him from his nabbed spot on the armchair. “C’mon, eishi, we have to get cozy if we’re gonna have a horror movie-a-thon!”
“Remind me again why we’re doing that?”
“Because it’s halloween! Don’t tell me you forgot?!” Sagisawa calls, not even looking over his shoulder. “Takayama, which should we watch first: Horror Mania III or Bloody Givings?”
“Uh,” Takayama blinks at the sudden speaking of his name. “The first one.”
“Really? Didn’t take you as the type for that…” Sagisawa shuffles a black and red case in front of an eerie monochrome one. “I think that order should be good!”
Umino beams. “This is gonna rule!”
“You like horror movies?” Kamoda asks, shifting his legs to sit cross-legged, holding onto one of the pajama pant legs.
“‘Like?’ I LOVE them!” Umino beams, scrambling back to her designated spot on the floor by the couch, with the blue, pink, and white sleeping bag and pillow. “I don’t get to see them often because my little brother gets nightmares too easily…”
Sagisawa inputs the DVD into the player, then scoots back next to Umino with the remote in hand. Karasuma has yet to move from his spot from behind the couch, but with a glance from Takayama, he finds himself begrudgingly shuffling around and plopping next to the wild-haired boy, shoulders brushing.
“Okay, let’s get this started with. You already took an hour just to choose the first movie.”
“Pshh, okay. But I bet you’ll be the one screaming during the jumpscares.” Umino laughs, reaching forward to grab some popcorn.
“What?! Horror movies don’t freak me out. They’re all fake, and the special effects are usually really dumb, I could never get scared.” He rolls his eyes, cheeks flaring red in response to the giggle Umino produces.
Eerie music starts to blast from the speakers, the shrillness of a particular note has Karasuma’s back tingle. He watches as the camera expertly follows behind a girl, her long black hair swishing side to side as she hops down the hall, looking left and right, unaware of any presence of danger. She passes by a window, and the glimpse of a human face staring back, red eyes watching the girl pass by, has Karasuma flinching. But he’s determined to definitely not scream, or let Umino win.
The movie slowly builds up, filling moments with suspense as it shows snapshots of the fated killer showing up in the background of scenes, and as the family continues to move forward, tripping their way through the plot and right into the traps. When the first person is killed on screen, Karasuma jumps bad enough that it jostles Takayama next to him, who was probably about to fall asleep. The boy drowzily shakes his head, and, holy shit, how can he even think of sleeping right now? Takayama squints at the screen, watches the horrified expression of a neighbor, before he slowly swivels his head to glance at Karasuma, who is adamant in facing forward and definitely not making eye contact with the guy who could tell that this movie was affecting him.
Another trap goes off, and another family member is down in a gruesome act that makes even Kamoda, the boy who got into fights, wince and make a few comments of disgust. Karasuma tries to carefully cover half of his face with his hand, trying not to be too obvious that he’s curling into a ball. He’s going to have that image haunt his dreams tonight. His left hand stays stubbornly by his side, but a sudden scream causes it to jolt and land on Takayama’s right, the action eliciting the same feeling of electricity and panic to spark its way from the tips of his fingers, all the way to his cheeks-but before he can pull it away, the killer appears on screen and cleaves the door of a closet in half in a jumpscare, causing Karasuma to instead grip on tighter.
Takayama, not at all focused on the movie, not so subtly stares at it for a second, before a small, lopsided smile grows on his lips and he looks away, and gently squeezes his friend’s hand in reassurance.
Karasuma feels like he might legitimately die of a heart attack, both from the horror movie playing, but also because of the warmth radiating off of Takayama’s hand, a warmth that makes him want to kick off the blanket he’s wearing and go run around in the cold October air for an hour just to get rid of all the nerves and maybe reflect on feelings.
He takes a deep breathe, and tries to focus back in on the movie. It’s all spins and angles and dark lighting, and the story is mid chase, watching a limping victim move his way to the truck in the forest. The sound plays up, tension growing as snaps of twigs increase on the direct right of the man, and Karasuma just feels like something bad is about to go down. He instinctively leans to the side, pressing his shoulder against Takayama’s and somewhat tilting his head, eyes glued to the screen as the victim picks up the pace and is only a few feet away from the car. He could blame the intimacy on watching a horror movie, right? It was a common thing to cling to the nearest thing when watching these type of things, and Takayama just happened to be that thing. That’s it.
When Takayama lazily tilts his own head a few milliseconds later, he ends up resting his cheek on the top of the bellwether’s hair.
Karasuma completely forgets about the movie, and about the murderer appearing and killing the man in a swell swoop of careful and impressive choreography, too focused on the sensation of Takayama’s gentle rumbles as he fights consciousness, the occasional twitch of his fingers and the knocking of his knee against his own.
He doesn’t know how long he sits there short-circuited, but before he knows it the credits are rolling, and Karasuma’s still stuck in the same position. He tries to shuffle so the one of the others doesn’t turn back to see them, but Takayama makes a sleepy sound of discontent, and it pierces Karasuma’s heart so well that not even 10 blackouts could get him to abandon this moment.
Sagisawa catches his eye, and Karasuma swears he can see the twinkle in his eye from taking in the situation, grin wide, but he doesn’t say anything, just gets up and changes the movie to the next one in the row. The screen changes to a lowly lit black and blue with yellow titled letters, and Karasuma can’t help but feeling the calmest he’s ever been.

RULES: Share 11 facts about yourself, answer 11 questions provided by the tagger, tag 11 awesome people and leave 11 questions for them to answer!
(I’m gonna skip tagging people/asking 11 questions - 1) because I’m lazy 2) because a lot of people who I would tag either have already been tagged or woN’T DO IT and 3) I have to answer two sets of 11 questions anyway so I’ll let one of those sets take the place of my 11 questions!!)
11 Facts
I was supposed to leave to move into my college 3 days ago but since my college is in Savannah they pushed off move-in/orientation for a weEK BECAUSE OF HURRICANE IRMA AND I’M STILL UPSET/DISAPPOINTED
That being said I’m about to start as a college freshman at art school, planning on majoring in animation! :D
I binged all of Buzzfeed Unsolved in like 2 days and I fuckin LOVE IT
Also BNHA is like my current main obsession???? I fell in love w that anime and uhhhh I’d Die For My Kids
I almost never use skype anymore - I’m always on Discord now (mutuals may add me just message me if you want my tag :3c)
I loooove creating OCs and my main OC is a forest elf named Rally and he’s precious and I LOVE HIM AND COULD TALK ABOUT HIM FOR HOURS (also my best friend @/harpxer and I have a huge ongoing rp with him and her mountain elf oc, Kahl!! they’re really gay)
Hmmm fun fact I guess I’ve been involved with internet communities since I was 10 years old and I made my very first internet friend when I was 10 and we’re still great friends and talk p much every day to this day (hi @/fiishr)
I want a tattoo super bad but idk what I’d geT
I worked at a jewelry engraving stand at an amusement park this summer and one night I accidentally gave myself a 1st degree burn on my finger from the hot glue gun and it hurt So Bad
I had my graduation party this July and it was really fun but the best part was when 14 of us played this giant game of spoons and it got really intense, made worse by people randomly screaming during it, and then we collectively decided to blast hardcore rap music from the speakers and Let Me Tell You i have not been involved in a more stressful card game in my LIFE
I’ll always always always fall for the hero/happy character/protagonist basically....idk what it is about me but I’m so Predictable...I love cute optimistic brave characters who just wanna do Right.....I don’t cARE IF PEOPLE THINK THEY’RE BORING I THINK THEY’RE PERFECT AND AMAZIGN AND I LOVE THEM
AS FOR AN EXTRA 12TH FACT ABOUT ME AS U CAN SEE I WRITE WAY TOO MUCH AND ALSO I’M THE BIGGEST OVERSHARER E V E R IT’S SO BAD SOMEONE STOP ME
ANYWAY ONTO THE QUESTIONS :3c
@mooitstimdrake‘s Questions:
If you were to make a new blog dedicated to one single thing (fandom, hobby/activity, etc) what would it be? Honestly, right at the moment probably BNHA!!!! it’s legit my most recent big obsession and I love it?? so much???
If you could have any kind of animal as a pet, what would you have? A RACCOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THEM SOSOSOSOSOS MUCH and some people actually do have them as pets! They can be difficult though but WORTH IT
Who was your favorite teacher and why were they your favorite? OH BOY......I’m gonna say it’s a tie between my AP studio art teacher and my AP US government teacher from this past year, my senior year! My AP art teacher because our class was super tiny, 12 kids, and it really felt like a family?? She was a-okay with letting us all goof around and say weird shit, she was really chill and funny and like. part teacher, part friend, which was always nice. As for my AP gov teacher, he was SO. FUCKING. FUNNY. OH MAN. NOT EVEN ON PURPOSE he just like? put up with SO MUCH? we had some real character kids in that class and my teacher’s reactions were HILARIOUS. he had a sarcastic streak too so his responses were equally as funny when someone did something weird. He would say the funniest stuff just ask @/harpxer I would tell her so many stories from that class sohboshrb. Aside from the humor that class was really interesting, and he’s a really good, invested teacher - he wanted us to learn, he’s super passionate about government and history, and he always started off each class with 2 current events which was really nice and helped me learn more about things happening in the world too!!! overall that was like my fav non-art class I’ve ever taken!!!!
What’s your guilty pleasure (and I’m challenging you not to say some kind of food)? HMMMMM. Honestly I’m gonna go ahead and say really cheesy or lame movies/shows (like, Disney channel movies, dumb shows - like the one summer I watched all of Glee LOL, stuff like that). Like yeah I know 90% of it is terRIBLE but it’s still amusing/lighthearted stuff that makes me happy KLSDJVLSDHB
Favorite pizza topping? EXTRA CHEESE IF THAT COUNTS, if not then pepperoni!!
What’s the last thing you bought (that wasn’t food)? I’ve actually been buying a lot the past few weeks in prep for college/spending a little money for ONCE since I worked all summer. I got a bunch of boring stuff but the things I’m most excited about are: two posters I got for my dorm (The Office is one and one is Lord Huron), a giant wall tapestry (it’s Up themed!!!), tWO BNHA/POKEMON CHARMS THAT CAME TODAY AND EVERY TIME I LOOK AT THEM I START CRYING BC THEYRE SO CUTE, and oh my GOD I BOUGHT THIS GIANT PILLOW FROM TARGET AND IT IS THE SINGLE SOFTEST THING I’VE EVER FELT AND IT’S HUGE AND IT IMMEDIATELY BECAME MY #1 COMFORT OBJECT AND TOP FIVE FAV THINGS IVE EVER BOUGHT!!!!!! I guess MOST recently though I just bought Clip Studio Paint online today (art program) since it’s on sale for 50% off and I’ve heard great things about it!
What upcoming movies/tv shows are you looking forward to? UHHHHH as for movies... justice league part 1, the incredibles 2, kingsman 2, the neW POKEMON MOVIE I CHOOSE YOU, probably a lot more I can’t remember rn. AS FOR SHOWS HMMM I’m...excited for the next season of the good place and izombie, and oh I’m excited for the punisher netflix show!! and the next season of voltron of COURSE!!! and next season of stranger things!! probably more I’m forgetting too tbh
Any recommendations (this could be anything just throw your best pitch at me)? JFISDJKLBJ I DON’T KNOW OMG tbh rachel you watch a lot of the same things I do already LMAOOO
What’s your favorite thing to wear that you own? OH FUCK I DUNNO HMMM I really like wearing my various leggings and scarves, but as like a Single Item....I like wearing....uhhhh I have this giANT sweater like it’s WAY too big for me but it’s so COMFY and I love it. I also love wearing my Star Labs sweatshirt bc it’s soft and comfortable
What was your first pet? my cat!!! we took her in as a stray kitten living in our backyard when I was like. 2 or 3 and so we’ve basically had her my whole life!!
If you could learn any language, what would it be? UHHHHHH honestly probably spanish - I took it 4 straight years and was okay at it in class but one year went by with me not taking it and I forgot everything LOOOL I’m...bad....at languages....
@cynessie‘s Questions:
Where is the coolest place you’ve ever been? I haven’t been many cool places :( I guess the coolest isssss I dunno it depends? Lake George is where I go on vacation every year, I LOVE NYC, I love Savannah too and it’s where I’m gonna be for college so?? ?? ?  ? I’VE NEVER BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND I’M SAD BUT I’M POOR AND CAN’T AFFORD IT
What was the first thing you remember wanting to be when you grew up? veterinarian!!
Look to your right. What do you see? a dirty plate on my desk, my bed just past that, and my CHARMS THAT CAME TODAY THAT ARE SO CUTE I CRY EVERY TIME I SEE THEM
What are you procrastinating on? ajkldjboidj lik e 4 art commissions,,,, and 7 MAP parts,,,, and my pre-work for 2 of my classes,,,,,,,and cleaning my room,,,, and sending thank-you notes to relatives,,, SOMEONE KICK MY ASS AND MAKE ME DO SHIT
Which family member are you closest too and what is their name? UHHHH.... I guess my younger brother Luke? or maybe my mom? I’m not on bad terms with anyone though, I love both my older brothers too and we all have a good sibling relationship I just talk more with my younger bro I think - second closest would be with my second older brother Connor!
What’s the last song you listened to? I’m listening to Ultralife by Oh Wonder right now :3c I’ve been on a huUUGE Oh Wonder kick lately!!
What do you generally carry in your bag/pockets when you go out? my wallet (w my license and money and debit card and all), travel size lotion, phone, and chap stick!!
What is one thing you are excited for? FINALLY GETTING TO COLLEGE NEXT WEEK AND STARTING CLASSES FJIODFHINBDFHBNSBO
Do you believe in ghosts? I’m gonna hesitantly say YES but I’m not 100% convinced I don’t think
What is a skill you want to learn? MAYBE THIS IS WEIRD but I think learning how to act would be kinda neat. On a more realistic note I wish I could learn to exercise without dying
Tell me a joke. I’M BAD AT JOKES DON’T DO THIS TO ME NESSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO YEAH THAT’S ALL FOLKS it’s 5am now...Nice..... :’) I love my ability to stay up obscenely late while also getting Nothing Done JLSDNVDHAGHVDLAK

THE KHAN
THE KHAN
Tumblr media
Hailing from uptown DC  (14th street to be exact), The Khan has boasted an distinguished career in both the underground music world and DC’s cultural story today. From the same scene that’s delivered the likes of Yung Gleesh, Jay IDK, Goldlink and Shy Glizzy, The Khan’s undeniable influence on his local and national peers cement his place among the rest in the Chocolate City’s music legacy. The hometown hero stopped by CENO to talk about the history of his city, how he  got into music, and the people and culture that helped him get there.
“I’m the Khan from DC – from uptown DC, 14th street. It’s punk, you got the punk scene. You got a go-go scene. You got a jazz scene. Black Broadway was in DC on U street, where I grew up at,” he explained. DC didn’t get the nickname ‘Chocolate City’ for nothing, and it’s cultural significance can’t be overstated. The historically black neighborhood surrounding U street, once known as “Black Broadway,” was a regular stop and home for historic black icons like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Zora Neale Hurston and educator and social visionary Mary McLeod, to name a few. But as the city became desegregated and black families started attending venues that had previously been “white-only,” the economy of U Street disintegrated and the area was absorbed by rapid gentrification.
Tumblr media
“It’s hella music orientated, hella culture there – drill culture, street culture. Now it’s a bar culture, it’s hella shit. Hella lingo and shit like that. But then you got me and my friends. Every artist that’s famous from DC, not everyone can stack that they’re really from DC. But we’re really from DC, people know us in DC and our whole come up. Like me going out to LA and doing the shit that I’ve been doing, it’s never really been done, as far are from like, young niggas. People don’t look outside of DC. Even when I went outside of DC for the first time it was crazy as fuck. I didn’t think it was real. It’s a small city, a little life every day. Everyone’s tryna work up, finesse, do what they gotta do. Everybody.”
Tumblr media
DC today looks different. Like any major metropolitan in America, white people have moved in without regard to the black legacy of the city, and they’re taking over. They own neighborhoods, blocks, streets, and establishments. A white bigot who ran on racist propaganda and dog whistle language was just elected to the highest political appointment in the United States, just a few blocks from where The Khan and his friends grew up. “I didn’t go to the White House til I was ten. And that shit’s literally a five minute drive from my house. I could see it from looking down, I could look all the way down and see it two miles down. I’m from 14th so it’s two streets over on 16th, but I ain’t never been in front of that jaunt til I was like ten. Me and my friends went down on bikes and got in trouble for being too close… It’s the capital too, that’s something I learned to accept – it’s the capital, nobody can’t do nothing about that. It’s just some government ass shit. You technically can’t even own land in DC because everything is federal property.”

While everyone’s distracted by what’s going down on Pennsylvania Avenue, The Khan is on the ground, in his own neighborhood, and with his own people. “DC is like black migo shit. Around my way we got a trap building and it’s like Latino people in it, doing they thing. And we got black people in there and we all brothers. Even white people, we like white people. We just started seeing them and was like…I dunno, we should be cool. DC is different.”
The Khan describes music as a staple in his immigrant household, and the metal and punk preferences of his parents and family are easy to track in his personal style and the wave of music he’s known for. “My mom don’t mind if we’re blasting music to the max, she does the same. My mom used to wake me up singing “Chop Suey” as a kid. Every morning. I remember my mom doing that, and I grew up with my dad too, he used to be a metal head. Had like long straight hair, tight leather pants, so my whole family, my Latino family of the side is like that too. A lot of my uncles listen to rock, they all came here during that era and that was the cool kids. The El Salvadorian side.”

Meanwhile, his older brother helped him cultivate his passion for trap music alongside boom bat, and even a more classic New York sound. He gives a lot of credit for the what we might think of as old-school hip hop to that same New York sound (“real hip hop” as old heads would put it). “My older brother got on his trap shit. DC, especially back then was like, everything the hood. Blocks were like, hood, hood, hood. My first album I got was Get Rich or Die Tryin’. So I was on my hip hop shit too. He was putting me onto underground – mixtapes, not buying albums. And then when I started rapping I was into old school hip hop, I used to be on my rap-rap shit. To this day I will bar rap with anyone that wanna go. I’m just more into flows and stuff right now, more into sonics. And that’s just the way I want to go about it. And I feel like everyone that was rapping like that in a sense, wanted to sound like they were from New York. So when the old heads, E-bro and shit are like everyone don’t rap like this no more, it’s like bro – everyone not from New York. Everyone don’t know how to impersonate that. We can’t fake act like we on the train in New York. What the fuck?”
He’s okay with that. The impact of his local sound on the underground rap community backs up the pride he has for being from DC, and creating and perpetuating a sound specific to his his lived experience there. But something DC and NY undeniably have in common is a rapid and widespread gentrification at the expense of communities of color who have lived there and influenced the culture for generations. The Khan describes leaving DC for a few months and coming back to find parts of his city unrecognizable, and definitely not the same place he grew up in when he first met the people who would form the rest of his group, Atomos, The group met at the historic Cardozo High School, whose alumni include Marvin Gaye. “Atomos is Mahi, Red and Chachi… we started this group in Biology class. Atomos. We were like sixteen. It means individual, that’s where the word Atom came from and we were like that’s us, and we just ran with that…we became a super fucking group in DC.”

They were confident off top – The Khan describes Atomos getting booked for their first show off one song, and literally creating the rest of the songs for their set in that same week. “I made one song that was a freestyle everyone uptown was fucking with - “Intricate Softcore Thugging”- I don’t know why. Then my friend was throwing this DIY show, that’s part of the culture in DC too, art shows and things like that. So my friend booked us for that show, it was in a week, and I’m freaking out like we only got one song! So we ended up making a bunch of tracks for that set. And that was our first show ever, at this little dance studio, mirrors and poles and shit. And our first song, we just exploded, as soon we started performing we broke four speakers. We had a big ass intermission at some point because it was like – broke one, oh fuck, grab another one; broke another one, oh fuck, boom, then it’s like this big ass intermission because we had to find another speaker. Then we had to calm them down, move them back.”
“We just kept at it. We were the young kids from DC – to this day we still making history. My man Mahi just walked Tommy Hilfiger in fucking China and shit, that’s cool as shit. No one in uptown DC really did that, even for the whole city, we kicking down doors for people. And whether or not kids know it or not - they not gonna give it to me all the way - but me and my friends showing kids how to do it and showing them the steps. Just paving the way for our whole city. That’s why it’s more about the culture to me than anything. I got a responsibility down there.”
