imagine frank and richie being the best father-in-law and son-in-law duo known to humankind and embarrassing eddie as much as possible. like eddie comes home one time from work and his dad and his husband are in the living room looking at an album of eddie’s baby pictures because they’re THOSE type of people
this is so cute i wanted to write a couple hcs abt their relationship and it turned into this long rambly mess but anyway heres this
ok so even tho franks alive, eddie still lives with sonia. frank and sonia split while he was still a kid, and frank moved out of state. sonias still fussy and overprotective of eddie, but all the hypochondria by proxy shit doesnt happen
anywAY eddies abt 16 when frank moves back to be close to him - hates that he missed so much of eddies childhood
they have some shit to sort out, baggage to sift through, but after a few months, they become really close
a few months later, at the end of that same year, eddie and richie start dating
they dont rlly take it slow, bc it had been building up for so long, but its not until eddies 17th birthday that eddie figures their relationship is serious enough that richie should ‘meet’ his parents
(hes already met sonia and she disapproves)
but he hasnt met frank, and frank invites them both over on eddie’s birthday to celebrate
“please,” eddie begs, as they drive to his fathers house. “please dont be an idiot. dont say anything weird.”
eddie’d been saying stuff like this all day, basically on his hands and knees praying that richie doesnt crack some terrible Richie Joke abt how “you dont need to worry abt me, frank, i promise i wont get eddie pregnant”
and honestly eddies drilled into richie abt how much he wants at least one of his parents to like him, and how desperate he is for richie not to ruin this, so much that richie is starting to get a little nervous abt meeting frank, bc he doesnt want to let eddie down
and so they get to franks house and richie is...not richie
hes stiff and a little sweaty with nerves, wiping his palms on his nicely pressed slacks (eddie’s managed to dress up in his nicest clothes)
and hes sweet. and polite. smiles warmly, shakes frank’s hand in greeting and tells him “it’s so nice to meet you, sir”
eddies s h o o k
anyway they sit down for dinner and frank does a whole ‘Father Interrogating His Child’s Boyfriend’ bit. asks richie question after question, about how he’s doing in school, what he does in his spare time etc etc.
and hes honestly hes mostly just doing it to embarrass eddie, sometimes breaking character and stifling a grin when he sees eddie roll his eyes
but richie answers all his questions very politely, with a smile, and doesnt make a single dumb joke
“dad,” eddie warns frank, when he feels like the questioning is becoming too much
“sorry, kid, just wanna make sure this boy’s good for you. dont want you getting hurt.”
“i would never hurt eddie,” richie interrupts. “or let anything happen to him”. frank and eddie stare at him. richie looks very seriously at frank. “sir,” richie adds.
(eddie is so gonna make out with him after this)
“see? its all good.” eddie says, smiling at his dad and scooping up another mouthful of food. “we can all move on now”
“and you dont have to worry about me getting him pregnant.”
eddie drops his fork onto his plate with a loud clatter. mortified.
“so thats a plus.” richie finishes.
no
nonnonononnononono they’d been going so well. why did richie have to ruin it?? why is he sitting there like a smug idiot he just Ruined it why cant he fucking help himSELF-
frank bursts out laughing.
richie smiles triumphantly.
eddie gapes at them.
and thats how frank and richie become friends.
sO fast forward a few years and richie and eddie are married and living together
and richie and frank are basically father and son
like frank helped them move in together and set up their apartment and one night, after they’d finally installed the TV, the three of them collapsed in the lounge room and frank turned on the football
and eddie had been abt to protest bc come on dad we’re Gay
but richie had shushed him before he could. and spent the next half hour pretending to know a single thing abt sports. putting on a real Bloke voice as he and frank discussed the game, and sending eddie amused, giggly looks every now and then bc somehow he was pulling it off
(annoying thing is, richie actually gets into football after that. and frank sometimes comes over so they can watch games together. eddies usually curled up by richies side, asleep on his shoulder. bc fuck sports)
sometimes, richie teases eddie abt some embarrassing thing eddie did as a kid, and eddie is shocked at how richie even knows that until he remembers walking in on richie and frank talking in the kitchen while they made dinner together one evening
frank had been telling richie a story abt eddie when he was little and richie had been drinking in every single word
and eddie had wanted to strangle his dad. bc he knew richie was gonna use all that shit against him
he didnt expect richie and frank to team up and tease eddie abt it together, though, but he probably should have
also
eddie and richie are both in their late twenties but frank calls them both ‘kid’ and ‘son’
the three of them always try to out dad-joke each other (frank always wins)
before eddie n richie got married, frank had told eddie one night ‘you really need to marry that boy’ (’shut up’ eddie blushed) ‘honestly...the way he looks at you...i’m surprised he hasnt put a ring on it already’ (’shut up’)
and frank just...rlly likes richie? like the conversation just flows easy with them and they make each other laugh but also he can tell that richie just thinks the world of eddie and hes glad that his son has someone who loves and cares about him so much
sometimes he thinks about what richie had said that first they’d met, about how he’d never hurt eddie, or let anything bad happen to him
and frank knows its true
