Fake It 'till You Make It | Part 1
The phone was ringing. It was eight in the morning, on a Sunday, and the phone was ringing. Eddie rolled over, pushing his face into his pillow in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, he’d suffocate in the sweet embrace of his misshapen, well-loved pillow before whoever dared to call at such an ungodly hour, decided to give up.
No dice. However his uncle did seem to be answering it for him, bless that man, bless each and every one of his gray hairs.
“Eddie, up an at em, son! S’fer you!” Damn him. Damn him and all his gray hairs.
“Nggghhhh!!!!” Was his very coherent response
“It’s one of those kids’a yours!” Kids? He had kids? Oh shit he had kids, right. kids who should know better than to call at EIGHT. AM. AM. THE MORNING.
ON A SUNDAY.
Just inconsiderate really. He’d spent the majority of the previous night convincing the Gillespie’s that maybe their daughter didn’t actually need to get onto the endless carousel that was the dating scene.
Convincing them that maybe the dating pool was so batshit insane that it was for the best that she remain perfectly single for a little while longer. That maybe being single wasn’t nearly as bad as being with whatever the fuck Eddie Munson was.
Eddie had spent the entire evening referring to her father by his first name as it visibly pissed him off, called his daughter ‘sweet cheeks’ and slapped her ass as she left the room one too many times (any time more than zero times was too many times), offered her mother a joint to chill the fuck out, talked about his band incessantly, he’d gone all out on the ‘disrespectful sack of shit’ angle until he’d been forbidden to date their daughter.
Then listened with glee outside the door while they declared she was forbidden from dating for as long as it took to shake her from her ‘bad boy’ phase. A job well done, she’d slipped him the fifty bucks she owed for the night through the back window, and he was on his way. Fifty bucks better off!
Megan wasn’t having a bad boy phase. Megan was a lesbian waiting for the perfect opportunity to get the fuck out of Hawkins. She just… couldn’t handle her parents constantly asking about her dating life. Or her lack of a dating life.
She was beautiful, the picture of stereotypical femininity, they had no idea why their daughter wasn’t snagging one of the rich Loch Nora guys like a Harrington, or a Johnson, or even one of the B grade rich guys like Hagan, or Peters.
She was too busy with a Holloway.
Then the following hours before he’d eventually passed out, he’d been slowly working through memorizing the chorus tabs of an Iron Maiden song he’d been meaning to learn for one of the covers used to bulk up Corroded Coffin’s sets. Jeff already had his parts down, Eddie had been lagging.
“M’not here!”
“Says it’s important!”
“Tell em I’m dead!”
There was a pause, and then his bedroom door was opening, and a cushion was thrown at his head, forcing him upright to shout his indignation to the world while his uncle stood there stern and unimpressed “Boy get your backside up an talk to y’damn friends.”
“Nghhh, fine.” He was up anyway. The phone ringing had woken him up. It’d take a miracle to fall back into a full snooze now. He shoved his blankets aside, trudged past his uncle, and snagged the phone from where Wayne had left it on the little table by the window. “Whomever this may be, I’m nuking your stats next session for the unholy crime of waking me up before noon.”
“But I’m calling about a job”
“Ahh, Henderson. Might as well just tear up the sheet for that little gnome now, kid.”
“He’s a dwarf and— ngh whatever, I needed to roll a new character anyway. Listen! I have a job for you, if you want it, one of your weird little rent a guy gigs” not something he was proud to have let slip around the kids. It could get weird if they made assumptions!
But if it got him an extra buck or two without having to do much other than be an over the top version of himself, then what was the harm? It wasn’t like he was selling his body or anything, just his funhouse personality.
“…Go on.”
“Okay so… don’t freak out, but… it’s a guy. He’s cool though!! Like, really cool, super chill, no danger to you what so ever.” That was fine, his ‘dates’ were usually fake but that didn’t erase the very real danger of being perceived by two of an older less cool generation that talked. “He knows it’s all fake so it’s just acting—"
“And this guy’s parents? How cool are they?” It wasn’t just faking a date, it was faking it in front of parents. Parents who usually weren’t about to approve of him when it was a heterosexual relationship. A Homosexual one? He really didn’t want to have to go through the real risks of hate crimes with a teenager, but Dustin clearly wasn’t getting the danger aspect there.
“I don’t know, I don’t really know them, but he says he can explain everything if you give him a chance, he’s free today, he even said he’d buy you breakfast if you meet him early!”
“…And he knows I’m a him, not a her, right?”
“Yeah, I said he was cool! The gay thing isn’t a big deal to him.”
“I’m not—” it was instinctual, Dustin didn’t know what he was, maybe he’d heard rumours, but he didn’t outright know that his dungeon master was a queer. Probably for the best, as lovely as Claudia Henderson was, she was very susceptible to accepting the crowdsourced opinion on things. She didn’t have her sons need to question everything.
She’d probably pull him from every Hellfire meet ever if Dustin let it slip that the guy in charge was queer.
“I know you’re not, but it’s fake right? it’s not like you guys have to do anything other than claim to be dating, right?” True… he never actually did anything with his ‘dates’. Usually just telling the parents they were dating was enough of a shock to the system to hide the lack of proof. The most he’d ever done was slap an ass here and there, maybe wrap an arm around a waist or two.
That was enough for the ‘traditional’ close minded Parents of Hawkins.
“…Fine, I’ll hear the guy out, but I’m only hearing him out alright! I’ll decide on whether or not I wanna take this job only after he explains, got it?”
“Got it!!”
“Alright, tell him to meet me at Benny’s in twenty.” Another quick confirmation and Eddie was hanging up the phone. so much for going back to sleep but at least he’d get a lovely breakfast out of it.

Tease Tidbit Tuesday
is this a new wip? yeah, shut up about it. I went to see my friend's show on Friday and then I tipsy texted @acountrygirlsfun about this idea in a series of unhinged texts. So here's a little snippet from my new buddie wip where Buck and Eddie go to a country show.
The working title for this fic is cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other because Orville Peck just dropped a version of the song with Willie Nelson and I'm a weak, weak person.
“Hey man,” Eddie jogged over to where Buck was rolling on the hoses, grabbing one end to help. Buck grinned at him, ignoring the way Eddie’s arms bulged as he rolled.  “You just saw me like 10 ten minutes ago, why are you saying hi again,” Buck asked instead of standing there ogling his best friend. Buck really loved being bisexual, he loved how it felt like a piece of himself finally slid into place when he figured it out, he didn’t love how now he noticed every hot dude, including but limited to Eddie fucking Diaz. “I - you know what I don’t actually know,” Eddie said with a laugh. “Are you free Saturday? A friend, well, a guy I know from high school is playing a show in WeHo.” “Do you need me to watch Chris?” Buck asked, trying really hard to not sound bitter because he isn't. He’d gladly hang out with Chris. “No, no, he’s got a sleepover. I wanted you to come with me. Sophia heard about the show and bought me tickets without telling me,” Eddie huffed out another laugh.  “Y-yeah I’m free. I can pick you up?” “We can grab an Uber from my place. He doesn’t go on until 10, but we could go early and check out some of the other acts?” “Sounds good,” Buck ducked his head so Eddie wouldn’t see him blush. He bit his tongue to hold back the second half of his sentence - the part of him that wanted to say ‘it’s a date’.

Spent my entire shower (which if you know me is a long time) plus late last night thinking about s7 Buck being tossed back in time to the day he joined the 118 and freaking out because he has no idea what to do, no one trusts him enough he could convince them about it, Eddie isnt even in LA yet, he simultaneously wants to make sure everything stays the same to get back to his future but is torn because he could really save people a lot of problems (chimney and the rebar, Hen cheating, etc).
Finally he gets the idea that theoretically theres one person he could convince its real if only because he knows not a soul would know the info he has. So he goes to Tommy. Tommy who has just started at harbour, that hasn't come out yet, who, when Buck explains in detail not only that he knows Tommy is gay/queer, but gives concrete examples future Tommy gave him about his anxiety and insecurities with his sexuality, is forced to believe Buck. (Also maybe he likes the idea that there's a version of his future where he's out and proud and dating this gorgeous twunk)

Okay I've settled on my head canon which is that Eddie is bi (or some version of "likes women and men"), too... I need to ramble about it because this popular idea that Eddie is gay just bothers me tbh it just feels ignorant, bi erasurery. And sure, maybe I'll be proven wrong, but in the mean time...
I think the reason why Eddie just can't be happy with the women he's pushing himself to date is because he's only really ever been drawn, and loved, two people: Shannon and Buck.
And these women he's since dated... are neither of those people. So the other relationships are just... fake, unhappy. Not because of sexual incompatibility, but because they're loveless, on Eddie's part.
The romance with Shannon started as a teen-age romance. They were childhood friends and lovers, but they were too young and immature to really handle the stress of parenthood, and despite that, pushed into a marriage.
It was too much for this young, immature, love to survive. Them freaking out and not being a team.... That just started to hack away at their mutual trust, and that eventually killed the romance, and the marriage. This immature love just could not handle all this pressure, and co-exist with that dying trust.
And then, Eddie meets Buck when his and Shannon's marriage is on a break. She's runs, is away for a long time, Eddie is raising Chris alone... And Buck steps in.
And Buck is insanely helpful, a major stress relief -letting Bobby know that Eddie is struggling to find a caretaker for Chris. Researching for ways to help Eddie... He finds Carla to help them. Buck takes one look at Christopher and melts, wants to spend time with them... Eddie thinks "Woah. This guy is amazing. This is someone I can count on, who has my back."
So Eddie just moved on from Shannon. He did love her once... but then they killed their love and marriage, together. Mutual destruction.
Eddie didn't trust her anymore, she didn't trust him after he'd enlisted in a panic to run from the parenthood, from Christopher's diagnosis... they were fighting all the time... and then she just left him alone with Chris.
And I refuse to demonize her for leaving btw, she was young, under a lot of stress, and Eddie was running from his parenthood. Eddie needed that push, to take responsibility, and connect with Chris!!
But still.. She left, Eddie was hurt and alone, and really doesn't trust her anymore, and then he meets Buck.
So Eddie moves on. His and Shannon's romantic love just... dies. And when she finally tries to re-connect. Yes, he still finds her desirable, and the human bond is still an important one. But where's the love?
They've known each other since they were children, they're friends, Shannon is Christopher's mother. But Eddie no longer really loves her like he once did. He tries. He forgives her, for everything, and really tries to mend their marriage, even proposes again after finding out she may be pregnant...
But it's just too late for both of them, they don't really work as a couple, and she realises she is tired of this battle, she is done.
Shannon leaving.... this made Eddie move on from her, even though he tried to deny it, even to himself. By leaving, Shannon gave the final killing blow to their already fractured mutual trust. Then she was gone for a long time, and when she finally came back, Eddie had already moved on, connected with someone else. She even says this - I was away for too long.
She realises that their marriage dead. She is shocked when Eddie keeps pushing her away from Chris, realises their mutual lack of trust. And she finally admits to herself that she doesn't really want to get back together with Eddie.
Eddie is dragging his feet, not really accepting her back, keeps looking for a "sign" that would say they should have another serious go as partners. Only proposes after there's another pregnancy scare.
Shannon thinks, this marriage is too broken, I want out. We both deserve something better than this. So it is a story of falling in love, and falling out of love.
And then she dies, and Eddie grieves, deeply. He did love Shannon, even though their marriage was a failure. He'd loved her in so many ways. She was his friend, she was his wife, she was Christopher's mother.
However, I do feel like the reason why he struggles to date after Shannon's death is a combination of grief - being afraid to try again with anyone... and it's denial of his feelings for Buck, and also fear that what if... This happens again, what if he loves and they leave. I think the key problem here really is Buck.
Eddie has already fallen for someone, and tries to deny it, ignore it. He thinks this is a road that would take him nowhere, so why try. He thinks Buck is straight!
So he starts pushing Buck away because this odd family unit they have...? Where is it going really, he thinks, Buck doesn't want him.
This line, said to Buck:
"Somehow we became a ready-made family and I... I don't know if I'm ready for that."
It's grief for Shannon, and it's unrequited love for Buck, and it's about being unable to love Ana because of those both massive things stopping Eddie from being able to connect with her.
Remember.... that Buck starts the thing with Taylor before Eddie starts dating Ana?
Eddie, looking like a zombie, hosting Buck and Taylor, telling Buck that he needs to move on, Eddie has. (Yeah it's a lie.)
And remember all these talks about Eddie needing to move on, before he goes on dates?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Eddie, trying to move on, and find his third family unit.
The scene with Eddie and Buck when they've just met, Buck bragging that "some of us don't need good lighting to look good..."
And then Eddie at the fire station, looking at Buck, forgetting to introduce Ana to everyone, realising his mistake and saying to Ana;
"Oh, you've never been here!"...
Because she wasn't, Buck's presence just erases her from Eddie's mind, it's like she isn't even in the same room.
It's true, Eddie realises. Buck really doesn't need good lighting to look good, not to Eddie.
Tumblr media
"Even in the dark, this place is amazing."
It's terrible, but disturbingly true for Eddie. This feeling, of existing in the darkness, alone, and watching someone who just doesn't need good lighting to look amazing. They just glow anyway, overwhelmingly, they just erase everyone else from your mind.
I feel like this symbolizes deep, unrequited love really well. Even in the dark this place is amazing.
So Eddie keeps struggling. He won't let Buck close because that's killing him, but he also can't let go of him. He's just ...always dying.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And then Buck comes out to him? It's a shock. It's a brief moment of dumb, wide-eyed hope.
Tumblr media
But then Eddie immediately realizes... This changes nothing. Buck is dating someone else. Buck is falling for someone else. Buck is still... Just a friend.
Nothing has changed for Buck, and therefore not for Eddie either. Eddie is still alone in this. And keeps dying.
So... The point I'm trying to make here.
I feel like this struggle we're seeing, it's not about Eddie being gay. He fell for Shannon, they agreed the sex was never the problem.
Even this new relationship with Marisol. He does feel sexual desire for her... Their sex life is great... Until he learns that she was almost a nun? Imagine being in the closet, bi, and realising your girlfriend was almost a nun?
It's truly "eyes on the ground". Would she still want her, if she really knew who, or what, Eddie is? Would she be disgusted if she learned about all of Eddie's fantasies?
How can Eddie trust her?
So... That's what making him run from Marisol. I do think he's making a genuine effort to move on from his old flames - Shannon and Buck.
I mean... Remember Eddie's talk with his tia? Learning that she had been married before, and refusing to even try dating someone else, until her friends dragged her out?
And ultimately this made her move on, meeting someone else. And soon she didn't regret trying again.
So Eddie is trying to move on from Shannon, and Buck.
But can he? Is he?
One thing about Buck's coming out, and the following scene, the talk with Eddie...
Noticed the buddie subtext, and the bisexual subtext of the lines when he talks about Marisol there? About needing to go home.
The "menu" is not the issue. The issue is that he doesn't want to go home, to Marisol. (Lol, there's btw that bicycle again, hanging on the wall behind Eddie's back. Bi subtext!!)
Eddie does desire her. ... He just doesn't love her. And that keeps happening... Because his heart is already taken.

Another tag day, another snippet of NFL Buck. Back to Eddie's perspective! This time, we are delving into this au's version of his and Shannon's background and relationship. WOOO! (Every previous NFL Buck post can be found here) Enjoy!
Buck gave Eddie a very befuddled look, "Um, if this is your way of breaking up with me, I think you skipped a few major steps here." Eddie rolled his eyes, "Make sure the equipment manager gives you an extra thick helmet Buckley. All those previous head injuries are catching up to you." His boyfriend gave a half hearted glare, but didn't make a comment, allowing Eddie to explain. "They're for Shannon." "Ohhhh." Evan finally caught on and Eddie can't help but roll his eyes again. "I keep forgetting your un-repressed ass is still married to a woman." The jerk had the audacity to crack jokes and give Eddie a cocky grin. "And that makes you my mistress." Eddie fired back. "Meh." His boyfriend shrugged uncaring. Which is fair because he's the mistress who beat the odds and convinced the husband to leave his wife. Though did it count if the wife left first? Eddie shook his head, pushing aside that thought, knowing it would lead down an emotionally twisted path he didn't want to get into at the moment. Picking up the divorce papers, Eddie returned them to the manilla envelope labeled with only Shannon's name. "Look, with the move to Houston I am obligated to inform Christopher's mother of his whereabouts. I did the same when we moved to Austin, though back then I was hoping that by telling her we were out from under my parents roof, she would return." Buck grimaced, "Considering you showed up for our not-a-date, date, that didn't happen." Eddie nods, unable to meet the younger man's saddened gaze. The hurt and anger towards his soon to be ex-wife, was all twisted up with a healthy dose of guilt and the love he would always have for her. It felt unfair to Evan to still love her. His feelings towards Shannon used to be less complicated. Before Eddie bent under his parents expectations, she was one of his closets friends. Much like Buck, she was easy to talk to, made him laugh, and didn't pressured him to be anything more than himself. Eddie never did express his disinterest in girls to her or how his eyes tended to linger a little too long on some the guys on the football team (he has a type, repressed or not). The subject of girls and dating didn't come up, until his dad made an off hand comment about his son not bringing any dates home to meet. Eddie panicked. And when Eddie panicked, he came up with some awful ideas. Kissing Shannon after his baseball game because he knew she had feelings for him beyond friendship, was one his worst. Back then, Eddie hoped that treating Shannon as more than friend would lead to feelings of actual attraction and romantic love. It didn't. Further expectations, additional pressure lead to more panic and stupid decisions. Then one day during his senior year, Eddie found himself with a positive pregnancy test in hand and Shannon begging him for a solution. He was down on one knee with a ring his mother shoved into his hands two days later (Eventually Eddie would learn the silver band with a small lone diamond was a promise ring from Adriana's cheating ex.) Shannon said yes, Eddie's Uncle Paco ordained their wedding at the local rec center, and Christopher Edmundo Diaz was born May 8th, 2008, just after Shannon took her last final (her water broke as she handed in her math test). When Eddie held his son, he instantly knew, his entire heart belonged to this tiny little boy, but right on the heels of that love came the cold dredges of panic. On May 9th, 2008 Eddie acted upon yet another awful idea and signed up for the Army. Neither he nor Shannon made it to their high school graduation. Instead the first tear in their relationship was being formed with angry shouts, heartbroken sobs, and a hastily packed duffle tossed into an old truck.
I will admit, I am not the biggest Shannon fan, but I am not a Shannon basher either. Her and Eddie both made mistakes, and that will be shown in this au, as Shannon was a big part of Eddie's journey and the mother of his child. Hope you all enjoyed!

here is my idea: buck and tommy break up but stay friends. eddie is convinced buck still likes him and now he is jealous of tommy. because now buck has a openly queer friend he is very good friends with and he cant stand it, eddie is his only (homoerotic) friendship. he can accept him dating like always but buck cannot have what THEY have. he cannot be replaced by a more open version of himself

Okay so... I either just had this idea or I'm remembering reading a story like this because it feels like something I could have read before but either way, it needs to be shared. We need a hundred different versions of this. How about we all just write one?
Here it is. Another Buddie prompt.
They are not dating right now. But they're close. Best friends. Canon relationship.
But one day in a "quiet" spell at the station, the team ends up finding out that one of Buck's odd jobs before becoming a firefighter was being an exotic dancer. It's a fun conversation, he takes the teasing with a smile on his face. It's not something he regrets doing. And he made good money. Not to brag.
Anyways, fast forward a couple days. Buck and Eddie are sitting on Eddie's couch, they each have a beer, they're watching an adult movie they can finally watch since Christopher is at a sleepover, it's chill, it's nice, it's them. It's perfect. Even if Eddie has been acting a little weird.
The credits have started to roll, Buck wants to start their usual post-movie discussion, when Eddie suddenly sets his almost full beer on the coffee table with a clang and says, "Show me."
Buck is very confused. "Show you what? Am I missing something?" He sets his own bottle down and turns to look at him. He notices that there's a slight pink to Eddie's cheeks. He gets distracted watching the man lick his lips.
Eddie straightens in his seat. "You used to dance, right? Show me."
And basically Buck gives Eddie a lap dance and they end up doing stuff. Ya know.

Thinking about Buck and Eddie's relationship history, and it is making me insane because of how many parallels there are, particularly around what went wrong:
Pre-Canon Shannon and Abby: She made a unilateral decision to leave because she was under stress from her mother's terminal illness. The end of that relationship was a catalyst for intense personal growth for him, causing him to carefully examine his priorities and what he wants from life (Eddie working to become a good father, "Buck 2.0").
S2 Shannon and Ali: The relationship is colored by absence and estrangement (Eddie and Shannon's separation, Ali's job keeping her and Buck in different cities for most of their relationship). She ended it because she couldn't handle the pressure of being in a relationship with him (for the purposes of this parallel, I am considering Shannon asking for a divorce to be the end of that relationship rather than her death). The end of relationship is entangled with a deeply traumatic event (Shannon dying, the truck bombing), and marks the beginning of a low period full of anger, frustration, and resentment for both Buck and Eddie.
Ana and Taylor: Someone he knew casually/briefly a while ago re-enters his life, and he chooses to pursue a romantic connection. They aren't a good fit, but he tries to make it work for longer than he should because of the way his sense of self is caught up in the idea of being able to maintain a "successful" relationship. Both people in the relationship seem caught up in the idea of "making it work" rather than honestly evaluating if they are a good fit. He chooses to end the relationship despite her willingness to hang on and keep trying.
Natalia and Marisol: it feels too early to parallel these relationships because technically, Eddie and Marisol are not dating by the end of S6 (he asked her out, but they haven't gone on a date yet). I also think that between the network change and the strike, there's a strong possibility of one or both of these relationships concluding off-screen over the break to give the writers a clean slate for S7. But I WILL point out that, despite Eddie outright stating that dating people you meet on calls never works, both Natalia and Marisol were people they met on a call. 🤔
And on top of all these parallels, we have the timing and a very clear pattern for how romantic relationships start for Buck and Eddie. The pattern goes like this: Eddie gets into a situation where there is some sort of external (real or perceived) expectation that he pursue a particular relationship. In the very next episode, Buck decides independently that he's ready to be in a relationship and begins pursuing romance with a convenient partner.
Of course, our season 6 version of this pattern had a fun double-reverse twist to it, because while Eddie is pressured to go on a date right before Buck meets Natalia and basically throws himself at her, Eddie is adamantly not ready/looking for a relationship until Buck connects with Natalia. It's only after Buck starts pursuing a relationship that Eddie decides actually, you know what, he does want to meet someone and proceeds with the most cringefail looking-for-a-date montage of all time.
Anyway, I love these two idiots and can't wait for them to get their act together and date each other. But also, I am endlessly fascinated by the writing choices for these two characters.

"Cursed" was Buck's version of Eddie's "Jinxed" - the sperm donation is Buck's Ana
Well, peeps, we knew it was coming but they're actually doing it. They're going for it. They literally have moved the Eddie piece into place and this episode made it perfectly clear. We called it, they got him into position and he is looking towards the "future", specifically his.
We remember back in 4x06 certain things occurring for Eddie and how a few things that happened in that episode panned out (like seeing Ana again).
And they decided to perfectly parallel certain events from that episode in this one to not only close out Eddie's story from Jinxed but to also show us just how far he's come since then.
Parallel #1:
youtube
"Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am"
Ending 118 scene for 6x07: "That's all she wrote" "Why is it never 'all he wrote'?" "I don't make the rules."
Both of these scenes parallel each other with Hen mentioning how the usual sayings tend to revolve around one particular gender. This time though, in 6x07, Buck and Eddie are out of the conversation; it only happens with Chim. Chim who knows better than to argue with Hen.
Parallel #2:
youtube
"Sorry, guys, I already have plans."
118 ending scene in 6x07: Hen: "Shift's over. Let's go and get some real food." Buck: "I can't. I have a donation to make."
While Athena is the only one not in the loop regarding Buck's decision at this point, they literally had it be Buck this time who can't make it, paralleling it to Eddie's inability to make it back in 4x06. Buck has no clue what Eddie is talking about back in 4x06 nor does the 118, only Bobby. Hen is the only one who knows the full details about Buck's decision (also the parallel of being given advice/a talking to by someone they view in a somewhat parental role: Bobby for Eddie; Hen for Buck; this is why we didn't see a talk between Buck and Bobby yet now that he knows btw), the 118 now knows what he's doing and so he is open and announces it (though he doesn't want Athena to know just yet). Not to mention the post-mortem of the fake firefighter thing took place at breakfast minus Eddie though he had a connection to the whole thing (and it was about him). The post-mortem for Felisa's stalker took place before Buck leaves.
Parallel #3:
youtube
youtube
Eddie has a stand-in character in each episode: Brian and Felisa. Both represent where Eddie is presently at and what he's currently struggling with. The only difference is in 6x07, Felisa also represents Buck a bit as well with what Buck is currently experiencing. (no coincidence that once Buck touches the bracelet, Connor and Kameron show up at the firehouse to ask him why he hasn't done the donation yet & then the 118 finds out)
Parallel #4:
youtube
6x07: In the opening breakfast scene for the 118, Eddie mentions how Buck is living in the "age of absolutely".
Buck is still rushing headfirst into the future and he's determined to do it bigger, brighter, and better than before. In 4x06, he had become Buck 3.0, a "kindler, gentler" version of himself. In 6x07, he's doing everything he can to ensure his sperm count is high and his donation will be the strongest and healthiest it can be.
Parallel #5:
youtube
"Sometimes you gotta move on."
In 6x07 in the ending scene, Eddie calls Abuela to say hello and playing along, asks her what the curandera says about his future.
Eddie has always treaded lightly when it comes to the future, sometimes being downright afraid of it. In 4x06, he's not ready to move on but gets a kick in the pants from Eddie to get back out there in the form of Ana. In 6x07, we see that he has fully embraced the idea of his future (which is what closes out the Jinx story line for him past the Ana breakup) by the shot of him asking that question while smiling (obviously making peace with Abuela's beliefs), looking at Christopher in front of him who is looking forward, and the camera then focuses on Christopher. Christopher has always been the future/in the future. While he didn't care for Eddie dating at first, he eventually embraced the idea once he found out it was Ana. He embraced Buck and the 118 (still part of Eddie's future) right away. The difference this time around is that Eddie and Christopher are right where they need to be in relation to their story line as a family. Christopher will obviously always be Eddie's heart and his first priority, but Eddie is now also living for himself and making his own decisions. So he's ready for whatever the future entails, and by showing us Christopher in that shot, it also shows us that he's ready, too.
Parallel #6:
youtube
Tumblr media
Eddie was given two Latina characters in each story line: Ana Flores and Felisa Valdez.
Ana was a love interest that ended up not working out in the end, but her last name Flores indicated that her journey with Eddie was going to help open him up in some way (especially when we saw their meeting back in 3x15). And in a way it did, because the panic attacks started while he was with her, which unfortunately led to his breakdown, which then led to his healing.
Felisa is not a love interest; she's an actual stand-in for Eddie himself. That's why he feels connected to her and identifies with her so much. He knows exactly how she feels. Watching that beach scene in 6x07, you might start to think is it possible they're setting something up here, but Eddie's dialogue as well as Felisa's quickly give the scene context to be something different: a showcase to the audience of Eddie's progress and that he is in the right place to move forward. It's a goodbye to the Eddie we've known before. New era!Eddie Diaz is here. And funnily enough, Felisa's name (another 'F' involved) means happy. Meeting her was also essential to his journey, even if it was only for this very last part of it.
Parallel #7:
4x06: Eddie and Athena not believing in the jinx while Buck, Bobby, Hen, and Chim all do.
6x07: Eddie and Athena not believing in curses (though Eddie questions it himself for a minute, though not in the same way the other characters do) while Buck, Bobby, Hen, and Chim all do.
Parallel #8:
youtube
Tumblr media
Buck unintentionally outs Eddie to the 118. Buck unintentionally outs himself to the 118.
Parallel #9 (they did this even right down to the props):
Tumblr media
In 6x07 ending 118 scene Buck has a water bottle in his hand while everyone else is snacking, before they break apart & Buck declines.
And they did it with coffee, too:
Ana gets burned by spilled coffee; she and Eddie agree to no coffee on their date &:
Tumblr media
youtube
(they could have been eating or drinking something else in the above scene) & Buck is not having any coffee or other food other than the alfalfa smoothies.
That's just a few but they purposely called back to 4x06 to show us how far Eddie had come since then, how the universe is now screaming at Buck about the sperm donation, and how this will kick in his own journey into a future that's right for him.
We all already been knew but this episode verified it. Eddie's in position for the next chapter; Buck still has to get there.
And even further verification is the two titles mentioned from Felisa's body of work. Eddie sees the poster on the wall for a movie/show of a medical romance between two doctors: "What the Heart Wants" which features the tag line "Saving Lives. Saving each other." Now considering that Felisa is a stand in for Eddie, we now see just how closely tied Eddie's and Buck's stories are tied (now minus the Christopher factor in addition to their family unit), and it's two people in love in the same line of work, the clock ticking on when Buddie goes canon has officially started. Especially when Felisa mentions her next movie "When Time Stops" where her character didn't feel anything because she was cut in half and Chim pipes up with "I saw that one." And what happened to Chim last season when Maddie left? And how often is Buddie paralleled to Madney in the show? Plus:
"Saving Lives"
Tumblr media
"Saving Each Other"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
Not to mention:
Tumblr media
"That one's mine."
It's all laid out for us. They're getting Buck ready to travel the Buddie roadmap now to get to where he needs to be, just like they did with Eddie. So expect some major Buck angst and heartbreak this season, especially regarding the sperm donor decision. Eddie was jinxed but not anymore. Buck is cursed but hopefully won't be for long. The universe was screaming at him but he "refused to listen". And we all know what occurs when that happens.
Plus they didn't need to parallel this for Buck and Eddie's separate stories if they weren't going there but they did because that's exactly where it's headed.
It's coming, people. They pretty much said it in this episode.

So, WIP Wednesday guys!
Surprisingly enough I'm not late! Surprisingly enough I found energy to write a little more.
In general there's really not much left but now i see the details I also need (and probably one more scene I hate to write cause it's hard and I scream every time but you know your characters decide on your behalf? They decided! You'll see) and till i still have some energy??? - I have no idea where this energy came from but i think it could be @pirrusstuff sweet aura - I proceed.
‘So…’, - Eddie starts the engine after Maddie went into the building: ‘What do you have in mind?’, - Eddie himself thinks about lunch. Then picking up Chris from school. Then…  His mind is still a little foggy from the idea that he finally got a chance but hey. Buck needed him while he was blind and vulnerable. What if something changed? That's stupid and paranoid but it's kinda hard to fight. And Buck, as always, has absolutely no idea of this: ‘I… well. I think we need to go to a TJ cause I remember vividly that you have nothing in the fridge, I'm sick of frozen pizza and I want to cook something. Also I think we should go to my place to collect my clothes and some of the kitchen stuff. So we need to go there before coming home, then I'll cook, then we pick up Chris and maybe finally watch something before the shift, oh, also we need to call Carla to check if she's fine working today, I know it's in her schedule but she needs to know that she has only one person to watch over and…’ Eddie kisses him all of the sudden and no, it's impossible to get used to that. And that's the first time Buck actually sees him. His crooked smile and his eyes full of…something ‘Fuck, Evan. I love you’. Buck shivers a little and tries to speak calmly but fails drastically: ‘I… let's start from the loft because I have one emergency thing to do’ ‘And it would be?’ - Eddie has a very mischievous grin ‘You. It would be you. And If you don't want to give LA a very inappropriate show right here - let's speed up’ And Eddie just laughs.
And updated taglist (thanks, guys, love and hugs in any acceptable by you form)

NEW FIC: Both Blade and Branch
HELLO! Okay I am super excited for this one. This idea hit me like the lightning that struck Buck in the dark, on my two hour drive home from Toronto in the middle of the night after seeing a Depeche Mode concert. So I blame that for the tone.
This'll get DARK, but ends with comfort and I'm hoping a good romance? So bear with me. It's a departure.
Here is the first chapter of Both Blade and Branch.
Summary:
The chances of being struck by lightning twice are incredibly minute, but Buck still manages to pull it off. During a double date with Marisol and Natalia, nonetheless. Eddie manages to resuscitate him, but as Buck recovers from yet another trauma, Eddie can’t help but notice there’s something very different about him. He’s not quite sure what version of Buck he got back.
Snippet:
“I promise I’m fine, Eddie.”
“You-you died. Again .” Eddie’s eyes well up. He brings his free hand up and grabs onto Buck’s remaining shoulder. “Shit, I’m sorry. Buck, you died again, the exact same way, and I…”
“Brought me back,” Buck says tersely. “Again.”
“But you were dead,” Eddie exhales. “You were dead .”
And it’s all catching up with him. He can’t exactly hold himself together. He feels a fraction of the way he felt the night he took a bat to his walls. He feels frantic.
“Buck ,” he pleads.
What is he pleading for? He’s not entirely sure. For Buck to hold him and tell him he loves him and that they’ll stop wasting time because they keep almost losing each other? That’s never going to happen.
“You died twice .”
Buck’s easy expression falters, eyes shadowing slightly. He grabs Eddie by the wrists and methodically frees himself from Eddie’s grip. “I can’t do this.”
Eddie feels like he’s been pushed naked into a snowbank.
“What-what do you mean?”
“I can’t talk to you about this,” Buck, stepping around Eddie, and beginning to walk away.

Not really Wip Wednesday!
I was tagged by @wikiangela @disasterbuckdiaz @eddiebabygirldiaz @eowon @alliaskisthepossibilityoflove thank you 🩷🩷
Okay so, I posted a fic yesterday so I didn't look at anything other than that all week, so I'm gonna post a bit of a finished fic that I reread while editing the nightmare fic. This fic was a very random idea I had after the cemetery scene, and the idea started out as something that could be a crack fic and ended up being a very bittersweet no dialogue thing, so like, it took a turn kspskaoa. The fic is Eddie pining because Buck is on a date but then Buck shows up to his house and, well, in his pining he imagines, like, random kinder universes that allow him be with Buck, and the last few paragraphs of the nightmare fic reminded me of one of those kinder universes and I decided to make it similar on purpose for no reason really, I just thought it would be cool to give one of my version of Eddie's that (it kinda made me want to revisit this fic and expand it so it has a happy ending because I legit sat here contemplating life because I have a fic that doesn't have a happy ending but I also really like that the fic is bittersweet so I'm conflicted). This one is called this surprise ending i’m depending on (could be the story of another us) and you can read it on ao3 if your interested in something more on the angsty. Anyway, have this little bit I really like.
But the more pressing matter is he needs to get out of his truck because Buck is starting to lose the amused glint of his eyes and Eddie very much doesn't want to dissect why he was in his truck. It's not like he can say "oh, yeah, I'm totally in love with you and you were on a date so I had to go stuff my face with processed sugar," at least not without some consequences Eddie is definitely not ready to deal with. And he's been thinking about it. Consequences. Possibilities if he's feeling particularly hopeful. Not that he's been hopeful for a while. But to be fair, how hopeful can someone be when they are reminded of exactly how in love with someone they are by having to watch them die and having to save them? For 3 minutes and 17 seconds, Eddie lived in a world where Buck was dead. Then he spent days not knowing if he was going to wake up. He has nightmares where the CPR doesn't work and he can't get his heart beating again and he's trapped in a world without Buck. He knows he is not. Buck is within his reach, standing outside his truck watching as Eddie closes the box of donuts and collects his phone and wallet from the console. Buck just doesn't know exactly how much Eddie loves him. So it's hard to hope. There are moments when Eddie wants to tell him. Even before the lightning, there were moments. When he would wake up to the smell of pancakes and Buck would be handing him a cup of coffee with a sleepy smile before Eddie fully registered he was in the kitchen, or when Chris would fall asleep on Buck, even though Chris is not so slowly reaching that phase where he's too old for cuddles, and Buck would shrug off Eddie's attempt to move him to his bed and just settle in, he would need to bite his tongue to stop the words from tumbling down out of him. But now, after the lightning, the moments keep getting more frequent. He sometimes feels like he is one thankful smile or one rambling fact or one teasing remark from just blurting it out.

Here's your weekly rec list! I didn't reread anything this week, but I will be rereading some of the fics I read this week so it all balances out, probably.
The lists are tagged as ‘Han’s Buddie Recs’ and 'Han's Weekly Fic Recs'. Comments in italics are from me!
Newly Read
Your Love is an Oil Slick (It Glows like Rainbows, It Stains My Soul) by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels/@letmetellyouaboutmyfeelsExplicit || 67.9k When Eddie's son claims he has an imaginary friend, Eddie doesn't think much of it. Christopher is seven, it's what kids do. But then weird things start happening around the house, and Eddie starts dreaming about a handsome blue-eyed man.

Their house is haunted.

you and i'll be safe and sound by spaceprincessem/@spaceprincessem Teen || 50.8k the buddie hunger games au

it hurts to hope for more by 42hrb/@exhuastedpigeon Mature || 15.5k Buck wants to be a dad, it takes a couple break-ups and a major non-romantic heartbreak for him to figure out that maybe he already is.
This is half shameless self plug, half I actually read this fic this week after I posted it and was like 'damn bitch you actually did it, you wrote the fic you wanted to read'
reachin for me (makin love to someone else) by inbetweenthestacks/@organizedstardust Explicit || 8.3k Buck says Eddie’s name while having sex with Natalia.

Ruin Me Like Castle Walls and Burn Me Like a Village by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels/letmetellyouaboutmyfeels Explicit || 6.5k When a call goes wrong, Buck sees a new side to Eddie, and starts to realize a lot of things about his best friend. And himself.
Dragon Eddie and extremely hot sex? Yes please.
I have not wanted syllables by iphigenias/@oatflatwhite Mature || 3.3k Five times Buck and Eddie don’t say “I love you” + one time they do.
moth to a flame by brewrosemilk/@gayhoediaz Teen || 1.7k Eddie’s kiss is so gentle that Buck aches.
From the way in which he could be pushing Buck back into the lockers and cage him in - but is doing anything but. To the careful, barely-there hold on his face, and the sweet brush of his lips - light as a feather, no pressure added, tongue absolutely nowhere in sight.
WIPs
let you set the pace by devirnis/@devirnis Explicit || 12.7k (1/2 chapters completed) When Eddie had first broached the idea with Buck – haltingly, like he was afraid Buck was going to take offence, or something else ludicrous – Buck had gotten hard so fast that he’d felt lightheaded. Two whole days where Eddie would keep him tied to the bed (or other furniture, Buck’s sure) so he could have his wicked way with him? Buck must have done something very good in a past life.

Now that it's been pointed out to me, I can NOT stop thinking about it! It's a long ramble, so it's under the cut.
Eddie runs when things get tough.
Shannon got pregnant-> military
Shannon wants to move-> he shuts her out
Parents want to take Chris-> moves away
I am in no way blaming Shannon here, but I am saying that this is probably where most of this behavior was learned. It could even be from Ramon always being away, and being emotionally absent when he was present.
The thing is, when Eddie ran, no one stopped him. Shannon didn't put up a fight when he joined up. His parents let him walk away. When Buck wants to talk about the shooting and Eddie shuts down, Buck doesn't push.
So Eddie has learned he can get away with it. No one's going to push back, so why push at all?
I have noticed that he doesn't enter arguments unless provoked. When he comes home from Afghanistan, his parents and Shannon criticize every little thing. So he puts up his carefully crafted walls and shuts them out. He only starts the peacocking gym fight when Buck turns his aggression on Chimney.
Now the grocery store fight is a whole other ballgame. It's grief disguised as anger. I will admit, and I will die on this hill, that Eddie's "you're exhausting" comment was uncalled for and I would've burst into tears if someone said that to me. But that's what grief does to him. It's so overwhelming, and having grown up in a house where he had to be the man of the house as a child, showing no emotion, it's not surprising. If you're not angry when you're upset, you're not a man.
But I'm getting off track (as usual.)
My point is, no one's given him reason to keep fighting through the issue, so he simply walks away from it.
Which makes the cemetery scene even more incredible and interesting. Frank is my hero, honestly, and Eddie's growth has been amazing to watch. He's not running from Buck in the cemetery scene, he's offering Buck the chance to fight for them.
Instead of taking the lead, being in control, or walking away, he's giving the reigns to Buck. His last attempts at trying to get Buck to get over his near death experiences didn't work. He tried to get Buck out of his own head with the ladder truck, so he makes Buck go out into the world again. Only to be caught in a tsunami. He tries again (poorly) in the grocery store scene, asking him why he can't move on and suck it up. These attempts only made Buck internalize his emotions. Because that's all Eddie knew.
Thanks to Frank, Eddie's learning. So instead of inserting himself into Buck's issues and trying to make things right as fast as possible, he's actually allowing Buck "time to process" (seriously, how could Eddie possibly give such advice to others when he couldn't follow his own in s4?)
He lets Buck come to him in 6x12, and only asks how Buck's really doing after they talk. He's trying to follow Buck's lead for a change.
Same with the cemetery and "you don't have to be anything for anybody." Buck keeps looking to Eddie like Eddie's supposed to tell him what to do, but Eddie's learned that that doesn't work. Buck HAS to make decisions for himself or he's never going to grow. So, Eddie thinks that if Natalia is who Buck wants, then he won't stop him.
Now he did comment on how it was a bad idea for Buck to date people they've met on calls (kinda hypocritical dude!), but that's the only objection he's voiced.
Something else just popped into my head about how Eddie came to this conclusion. He saw Buck with Taylor and without her. Guess which version he preferred? Which version was happier?
That's because, when Buck breaks up with her, it's his decision. He chose to end things instead of waiting for "when the woman flees." Buck stumbles into relationships, and waits for shit to hit the fan. He doesn't put in the work either.
Buddie can either be really really good or really really bad with this. Eddie leaving the ball in Buck's court lets Buck make the decision to be with Eddie. He has to confess, because Eddie's resigned himself to pining forever. When Buck does, they can either have hundreds of problems, or learn to communicate and operate as a couple.
Forcing the decision into Buck's hands makes him choose for himself what he wants. Buck always has to be chosen, but Eddie's telling him he doesn't have to be. Eddie's always choosing, so giving Buck the lead is not only a huge display of trust, but it's a giant step forward in terms of how Eddie handles relationships.
Now, had Eddie not done this, this might've been a major issue for them. Buck would keep following Eddie's lead, not put in any effort, and Eddie would bail the moment they had even a small tiff.
But thanks to giving the decision to Buck, they have a better chance at a successful ship.
What needs to happen now is they need to address the things they haven't dared talk about. Namely the will, the shooting, and the lightning.
I know the show doesn't leave loose ends, and foreshadowing (especially when it comes to Eddie) can take several seasons to unfold. So, it's not improbable that the Will will be brought up again. I know they talked about Buck's death and the shooting, but not what it did to each other. And, I have a little theory about Eddie's comments about the shooting.
He remembers more. His body language in that scene absolutely says so. He barely looks at Buck, does a subtle head shake, and keeps his comments to a minimum. Because he needed to in that moment. Telling Buck everything he actually remembered wasn't what Buck needed. Buck needed the assurance that he was going to get better. That he'd actually process it. Eddie couldn't tell him the whole truth and expect Buck to feel fine about it.
Welp... this got way out of hand very quickly. Random thoughts while doing dishes will do that, I guess. I just think the cemetery scene has a lot more layers than I first noticed, and every time I think about these two, something new to analyze comes up.
