Coming out to your orthodox religious family was not easy. On the surface the media thinks you're this wholesome rich family but the truth was much deeper and darker than it appeared.
You were sitting in a bar drinking away your problems when you were approached by a cute gentleman.
"Hi, rough day? May I buy you a drink?" he smiled at you
you tiredly sighed,
"If you're trying to get me into your bed, not happening."
He chuckled,
"Let me just buy you a drink, I'll walk away if you're not interested." You scanned his face, not so discreetly.
He looked cute and shy..you didn't see anything shady about him. You cautiously eyed his again and nodded. He showed a toothy grin at that.
"I'm Winwin by the way!"
"___" you replied and for the first time that night showed a slight smile.
_
A few hours had passed and Winwin started to grow on you, a couple of drinks more and your eyes started getting droopy.
Before you could call your driver to pick you; you passed out.
-
When you woke up, you had no idea where you where. Immediately you sat up and met with a throbbing headache. When you tried to get up, you realised your hands were tied. Panicked you screamed and screamed for someone to help you. You screamed till you lost your voice, and burst out crying. You had no idea what happened to you, what they'll do to you or if you'll even get out of here alive. All those thoughts became too mouth and you felt a bitter metallic taste in your mouth as your throat ran dry. You couldn't breathe. The worst of all, the room was empty except for a clock in it, it had been a long time since you were here and you were almost sure no one was looking for you.
"Ya done screaming or should I give you more of a reason to cry about?" You did not realise someone else was in the room with you. It was Winwin. Your heart sank.
"Y-you! What have you done to me!? Let me out! P-please." The last word came out as a weak plea and he laughed at your pathetic state,
"Can't, boss' orders. Yknow if he hadn't told me to bring you to him, I'd might as well taken you out on that little date." He winked at you and you were filled with disgust as fresh tears threatened to spill out from your eyes.
Your chest, throat, stomach everything hurt. You felt like you could throw up any minute.
It took you 15 minutes to calm yourself down all the while Winwin was looking at you with an amused look on his face, watching your every move like a hawk.
You were just blankly staring at a wall. The worst that can happen is they'll kill you. Who cares if you die?
-
Five hours had passed since then and you were doing nothing, feeling nothing so you closed your eyes and tried to sleep on the dirty floor. Winwin stepped out of the room to call someone, he did not realise the door is not soundproof. It sounded like he was threatening someone, probably your family you presumed.
-
"We have your son motherfucker. If you don't fucking pay us back you'll find his body in your front gate. Have fun when the headlines say 'L/n Family's Youngest son found dead on their door. It'll be fun seeing police raid your family seeing all the black money you have." he laughed
"Do what you want with him. You can't hurt my business. You're a nobody." and he heard the beeping of the phone.
-
The door, half broken and rusty slowly creaked opened and the fear you felt when you first came here returned. Winwin stood up straight and greeted the man. He had long black hair, his gaze cold, almost predatory.
"Did you hear back from those bastards?" he spat out, glaring at Winwin.
There was an awkward silence from his side and he eyed him and looked back at you. Immediately understanding what it meant, you weakly laughed.
The whole situation was so funny to you when it finally clicked.
You came from a famous family full of businessmen. People so influential that every move you made had to be absolutely perfect- however to them, you were far from it. The first shock came to your father when you were fifteen years old and told him you wanted to be an artist, that you had no interest in the business. Second and the final straw was 2 days ago when you came out to him and he disowned you.
To think such educated men could have such shallow ideals.
You remembered your mother, how loving she was. If she were here she'd definitely accepted you. You remembered how she told you crying how all this success was a lie and she wanted you to stay as far away from it as possible, afterall you weren't like your father and brothers. You remembered how you saw her that night for the last time. You remembered how you heard them fight in the other room, your brothers had left the country to pursue their studies. You remembered how you heard her scream but your door was locked from the outside. You remembered vaguely seeing a blood stain in the carpet which magically disappeared the next day. You remembered the police labelling the case as a suicide, how there was literally no evidence found- how each and every corner of the house was checked except the locker your father held the keys to.
The realisation made your blood run cold.
Your father had borrowed a large sum of money from someone years ago to start his business. He always assured your mother he'd paid them back. The situation in front of you made it clear that your father has always been a selfish bastard.
The thoughts, the questions, the suspicions hit you like a train wreck and you started laughing loudly. Both men looked at you puzzled.
"I cannot, that fucker- no one's coming for me, he killed her and he'll kill me too. I'm gonna die here anyway. That's so funny. Its always been fucking money. It's more important to him than fucking accepting his son and supporting his wife." You said between your laughs as tears spilled through your eyes
The man knelt down, his eyes softened a bit, voice comforting yet distanced, he motioned Winwin to get out of the room and spoke,
"Hey, calm down. You're not gonna die here. I'll take care of him. I'm sorry I involved you into this. I'll let you go. Just an advice, don't go back there. Get your own place, you have a chance to disappear from his life. Take it. I'm Yukhei by the way, you can call me Lucas." he smiled a bit.
You blinked in confusion, looking for any signs of humour in his words but there were none. He sounded genuine. It puzzled you how he could switch up so quickly. It made you curious to know more about him. Lord have you gone insane.
"What if I don't wanna leave. What if I want to help you get rid of him?"
And he only smiled.
"I'm not alien to murderer, rich heartless fathers." he joked,
"And I thought I was unique." he laughed at your comment. He has a nice laugh. You thought. You wanted to hear it more. Its funny to you how you feel safer with a literal mafia leader than you've ever felt with your father.
You talked some more, growing fonder of him each passing second. You realised he's not as cold as he appears. He was just doing his job and truthfully your father was just a huge dick. He has such a bright smile. His eyes had this spark when he was talking about the people he works with. He was making your heart beat faster.
He took you to his room, gave you clean clothes to change into and made you eat.
"You know, Winwin likes you- he felt bad about whatever he did." you nodded as he continued, the room suddenly felt hotter than it was as he leaned closer,
"Too bad, I want to keep you to myself" He whispered in your ear before he held your chin and connected your lips together.

As long as I’ve got Paramount Plus for Picard, I’ve been watching 1923, and I’ve come to a realization behind its popularity: it’s basically a big-budget, live-action men’s adventure pulp magazine.
I say this because there are three main storylines at the moment. The A-plot is, of course, those wacky Duttons and their ranch, with them getting into a range war with those damned goatherders. This provides an excuse for a lot of riding horses and shooting revolvers, but since it’s the 20th century, we also get Model-Ts and tommy guns thrown into the mix!
Tumblr media
In the B-plot, a wayward son Dutton is dealing with being part of the Lost Generation (being traumatized from the Great War, of course, being among the manliest of traumas) by traveling through Darkest Africa being a Great White Hunter.
This being 2023, he’s more like a game warden who only hunts dangerous man-eaters. And though he still has native guides who still are the first to get et, he’s all bro-y and respectful with them. Also, for the sake of female audiences, there’s a hot-to-trot English heiress who is in an arranged marriage. Will she leave her dweeby fiance to attempt to heal this psychologically damaged, but totally badass, Dutton? What do you think?
Tumblr media
This storyline is basically a 50/50 split between killing animals and banging Brit hotties. Taylor Sheridan, mad genius that he is, has the young lovers declaring eternal fidelity almost long enough for the story to stop being badass, then they will be attacked by a charging elephant, have to spend the night in a tree being attacked by ravenous hyenas, having sex before the hyenas attack and immediately after being rescued.
The third storyline is about a Native American girl being ‘educated’ in a Catholic school--one of those ‘kill the Indian’ deals--and it’s essentially one of those ‘sweaty’ stories about Nazi love camps, with half-naked girls being menaced by hot pokers and sinful dwarves, except with the torturers being, well, Catholic religious figures.
Tumblr media
Bonus points for a naughty lesbian nun, in case you thought the show was just trying to show how the Native American population had suffered since Columbus.
(It seems to me that, for a ‘right-wing’ show, this story makes a lot more time for a left-wing talking point like “the Native Americans sure had it rough” than most left-wing shows will spend on a right-wing position, or anything that doesn’t agree with far-left politics in the year 2023. And that right-wing audiences are willing to ‘endure’ taking in a viewpoint that doesn’t totally align with their ideology more than left-wingers would--thinking now of the anarchy that has erupted out of J.K. Rowling not marching in total lockstep with the trans mob wing of the Democratic Party. Hmmm...)

UM HI??? WHY HAS IT TAKEN ME SO LONG TO WATCH MIDNIGHT MASS???? (good) ranting below the cut bc holy shit… *spoilers* do i need to even give a religion tw i mean…
so yall know i have oodles and oodles of religious trauma from my involvement w the church in high school so watching it has been a trip to say the least
also im obsessed with anything that mike flanagan has created the man rivals my obsession w david lynch SHIT
the hymns that they choose - phenomenal. i may not identify w the faith anymore BUT i love hymns and i was singin along like a mf fiend
but anyways imma do an episode by episode review bc im that neurotic
episode 1
i love it when creators have their fav actors/actresses, so seeing kate siegel, robert longstreet, annabeth gish, samantha sloyan, carla gugino, and henry thomas just really made me so happy! henry’s character design had him nearly unrecognizable and his accent too so whenever i realized i was like… u bastard ur amazing. he’s so talented! but i thought that this episode created a lovely setup about the show, with all the family and community dynamics. i heavily relate to riley’s dilemma about not going to church when he’s back home because of my estrangement from it all - and face it, my mom’s more of a bev than an annie (which makes the series a lot more… fun to watch because flanagan really hits the nail on the head when it comes to bev’s character). i’m hopping on the father paul is a hottie train because i have a thing for priests (hehe choo choo all aboard the trauma train!) but also that one sermon… wowza
episode 2
the homily that father paul gives… nearly converted me LMAO. NOT REALLY! but still i was like mans deserves an emmy for that. the whole crock pot luck scene had me in tears when pike died… like i haven’t finished it so i’ll let myself predict that it was bev bc she’s a big fat BITCH. continuing in the bev vain, riley’s exposé had me fuming with 1) taking money from the oil company and 2) using it for tithing like obviously she pocketed what was leftover from the community center. my parents give sO MUCH MONEY to the church like ??? i want an inheritance??? sorry im a bitch but its true lmao. but then his whole monologue about god and bad things happening and suffering had me bawling. my. eyes. out.
i used to be one of those people who believed that suffering was a good thing - i will reiterate that i was heavily involved with church activities in high school, staffing and planning retreats, giving talks, all that fun stuff (it’s fun looking back now because i see that it created a deep fear of intimacy in my heart hahahahahah). but hearing riley talk about it, and going on about how the townspeople especially suffer… woof that hurt. but the whole monologue was so well written, and so beautiful - i also appreciated how he has the whole view of the other side because he was born into and involved with the faith before leaving the island.
i think those kinds of views are one of the best perspectives because they really understand the church’s view and all. like with issues nowadays and with arguments with my parents, i can best them because i still somewhat know what i’m talking about. but watching other shows that explore catholicism just aren’t done right but this one… takes the mf cake. i can also really appreciate the imagery of the island being the faith and leaving it allows perspectives to change because it was what happened to me when i left my hometown to go to college. love how relatable it is.
episode 3
leeza’s miracle: had me shaking to my core, honest. my theory that i’m screaming into the void is that there’s some kinda blood in the chalice that heals her and is what’s healing everyone else. but moving on, whenever they go to sarah’s office and wade says something along the lines of “why can’t we just label it a miracle and be done with it” when sarah suggests testing that would actually benefit other people in leeza’s situation, it just blew my mind. and bev gatekeeping people from father paul (i guess it was alright since he was violently ill)… also for those of yall who dont know, priests aren’t supposed to be in a parish for more than like a few years so how the monsignor was there for so long… who knows. but the whole purpose is that the parish doesn’t get attached to the priests, which in a lot of cases happen and people move parishes after they leave, yadda yadda… but with the miracle and gatekeeping, it just goes to show you how attached they already are.
i simply adore how father paul’s confession telling of what happened to pruitt went - especially with the story of saul and the images of the stations of the cross… like christ it was amazing. and of course, bev has to be teaching about god in the public school. the whole conversation made my skin itch because it was like listening to my mom talk LMAO but i love hassan’s character and his view on it, and especially how the show explores his ostracization from the community because of his muslim identity. it made me sad to see how bev trampled on him and erin but i was like this is the christian’s world and we are sadly living in it lmao.
and HOLY SHIT LEEZA’S CONFRONTATION WITH JOE. in tears. in fucking tears. now i was not shot and paralyzed by a man but i was sure traumatized by him and when i tell yall that every word she said i have uttered to him. how my faith used to enable me to be beaten down by him i will never begin to comprehend (nor do i want to) but this scene just said it all and more.
riley and joe’s conversation really hit me so hard. no matter what happens, the town’s opinions isn’t going to change of them, and they know that. but when joe asks, “does it ever get any different for people like us?” i was bawling crying. because that’s how i feel coming home. all the people i used to know are still involved in the same old activities in the same old circles, and then there’s me. people know that i don’t go to church anymore; i mean i’m not crazy but i still feel like im ostracized in the place that i grew up in. i’m sure that my mom’s asking all her friends to pray for me to come back to the church and when i tell you that makes a person feel like garbage… when they all look at you with that pitying smile. like i know how it felt and i don’t want to go back there you can’t blame me.
the conversation between hassan and ali also had me emotionally deceased. ali made a great point saying that he didn’t choose to be muslim, i didn’t choose to be catholic; so wanting to experiment is valid. i love how hassan’s character is explored here, i was just disappointed in how deep. but his love for his wife *chefs kiss* im in love with him.
“if god really worked that way… if he decided that he was gonna heal some and not others”
tears… so many tears… the wounds of my grief dealing with my uncle really opened up and i was losing my mind about it because his death really began my distancing from the church and all. like he was so influential in my town and such and i started to think of all the deaths of people i knew recently… it all just hit at once man. it was a beautiful monologue and one that really hit close to home (too close if you ask me)
but yall would not believe my frustration when fr paul “died” i was screaming at the tv HES ASPIRATING TURN HIM ON HIS SIDE GODDAMNIT like not that it wouldve changed anything but if yall ever see someone throwing up on their back… for gods sake turn them on their side LMAO but i was like tf why did he die oh nvm we gucci continue on.
the religious parallels i literally cannot get enough on. flanagan deserves the gluck gluck of a lifetime for that.
episode 4
okay starting typing while watching now
ERINS BABY IS GONE?????? the fuck?? i dont remember if she drank the wine and i cant imagine she did but if she did then why did it make the baby disappear?
but her and riley’s prayer is so simple and so beautiful. and i love how they start the our father, the prayer that riley started after his accident but never finished.
riley’s monologue about death reminded me of how much im afraid to die lmao thats i think why i was so attached to religion was because it offered a comfort as to what occurred after death.
they finna be battling over this blood lmao love that turn and the significance of greed. kinda reminds me of how i compare my relationship with religion to an addiction heheh
NOT THE SLIPUP WITH JOE’S SISTER LMAOOO poor fr paul all mixed up w his old decrepit mind
ah yes monsignor’s hat and coat… oh yeah… its all comin together
SHIT ARE THEY ABT TO KILL OFF THE MAIN MF CHARACTER??? or even worse, make him into a pious freak? all will be revealed in the next epi
will i ever complete my wips…
episode 5
i was like i started recognizing henry thomas bc i was like are the characters getting younger - yes mildred is fuckin BANGIN’ get it girl
ayo FATHER PAUL SAYING THAT THE MILITARY SHOULDNT BE ASSOCIATED WITH A COUNTRY???????????? mans is speaking the language of my coochie
im hoping that bev grows an independent conscience but i know she wont
i LOVE how they wrote in the priest’s dramatic walk off after dropping a bomb ass homily it was so perfect
okay RILEY?????? im scared shits about to hit the fan - or theyre about to fuck, or hes about to lure her to the angel… or is he keeping her from it
i love how this is devolved to my insane neuron firings
just the little sprinkles of the bible, the whole “you know who i am” and the doubting thomas stuff i love it.
the series itself has kinda strayed from the original and old traditional beauty of church but im always invested in a mystery that flanagan produces
i just love that it has spiraled into putting things in the place of a proverbial god, i mean all things can become a “god” in their lives but this especially, and putting it under the guise of the christian god; so interesting. im not gonna read an article of an interview w flanagan that i found bc i dont wanna spoil it but im so intrigued as to what drove him to make this
also how people are only accepted into the flock once again when they have some spectacular miracle so to speak. like bev wouldve never looked at riley if he hadnt been changed
is riley gonna nom nom on erin orrrr…
their relationship >>>
WAIT HIS DREAM oh my god hes gonna wait for the sunrise. and hes gonna have his dream and hes gonna die
tara beth.
6
wowee ladies and germs here we are. erin greene redeems this show and i want so badly for her to escape the island because shes always had the best chance of living away from it but she wont so.
sarah is a fucking g. lets go lesbians.
yo if dolly’s crying… easter vigil is abt to be a mf sacrifice. everyones about to be “converted,” shall we say
im gonna fuck the sheriff
the procession to the church… the doxology… fucking art.
hassans like the one fucking time i go to church….
the angels like… lemme fuckin strut this aisle. its giving… moira during david’s wedding
millie was the g.
ed was the g.
well thank god leeza’s not in a wheelchair anymore
okay millie’s back i have a feeling her confrontation w sarah is gonna make me cry
i have a sneaking suspicion that ali’s gonna kill his dad
7
i hate how i say that all these people are dead like they arent coming back
annie the mf g though holy fuck.
“he wasnt exactly celibate” sarah is def monsignors kid theres no doubt abt that. how does it feel to have a heathen gay child father??????? hahahhahahahaha
yoooo bev’s retelling revelation with the blood dripping down her chin >>>
beverly, the budding arsonist
i really appreciate how bev’s whole rage over cherry picking god when shes the one that blows religion completely out of proportion. and thats the whole idea of it
“at that dinner, at that last dinner, i would’ve-“ “they know”
oh fuck. grief machine go brrrr. wanna hear me overshare bc i wanna overshare. the last time i saw my uncle my parents started a political discussion. yup. and then i left to see my friends. i dont even remember if i told him that i loved him. so holding in hope to leeza’s words with this one.
sarah… sarah sarah sarah… “it was a gift-“ “and [she] spat it out”
theyre gonna watch the sunrise burying sarah.
ali im CRYING
fuck bev literally half her words are from the bible yet she shoots hassan before he can finish one verse
oh my god erin clipping the angels wings. that is all. that is fucking all.
die alone bev watching all your manipulation burn
needless to say the second ali said “allahu akbar” i was shitting crying
bev digging her own grave like she had been the whole fucking time
and everyone singing together. hot damn flanagan sure knows how to end a series
and how else to end something with a jarring dialogue like “i cant feel my legs”
leeza, the impetus for the majority of the series, one of the most purely devout souls (i was leeza in high school going to daily mass every morn and so on), tells us that its all for naught, that it all wears off eventually.
flanagan you are blessed. idk if i can say that, but what a mastermind.

I would like to know more about „The Sword of Judith: Femininity and Violence as an Artistic Playground“ for the wip tag game, please
Hiya Ellie, that was a paper for a class, but its one of my favorite topics, so get ready for an essay. (this isn’t the actual essay, but the highlights, with added info for those with less art historical background)
TW: Nongraphic discussion of rape below the cut
The story of Judith is an old one, and, at its heart, a Jewish one. Judith was a Jewish woman, a wealthy and beautiful widow, who went up against her own government and a foreign army to free her city Bethulia from siege. She does this primarily by beheading Holofernes, the army commander. As a religious figure she’s of great interest all on her own. She’s one of the few women who pray for the strength to lie and kill, and goes against her government. She also never remarries.
All of that is just super cool sidenotes, though, because I want to talk about Judith in art, specifically Italian Renaissance.First, though, we have to talk about the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. So, Judith is a Jewish character, but her story isn’t a part of the Tanakh, Jewish religious canon. It’s still a significant religious tale, but became more favored in Catholic society during the Renaissance. The reformation, especially Martin Luther, rejected those parts of Catholic canon that weren’t in the Tanakh, and the Book of Judith was the first he rejected. As the Catholic church moved in their Counter Reformation, they commissioned a lot of art that emphasized the tales unique to their canon.
All that gets us to who Judith is and why she’s important in art, but Judith is such a unique character. Judith’s beheading is emphasized often not just as an act of faith, but an act of war. She assasinated a warlord in the dead of night after enticing him with her beauty and lying to him. Studying her portrayal tells us a lot about a society.
We know a little about how the Italian Renaissance viewed women. After the reintegration of Greek philosophers, women’s power was cut back even more, thanks to men like Aristotle (”women are just unfinished men”). Women were considered as passive creatures, intensely sexual and nearly incapable of resisting the sexual advances of men (no, really. they thought women wanted to sleep with every man they saw) and the beauty and femininity of a woman was extremely important, especially in society. The concept of a violent woman was actually unthinkable to many Renaissance men. Like, for real some men thought that women weren’t capable of violent anger.
Despite Judith being a strong character willing to murder a man in his bed, all that got tampered with the sexism of the artists that portrayed her. An excellent example is the rendition by Orazio Gentileschi (See Here). Judith is beautiful but completely impassive. Accompanied by her maidservant they look off to the side as if they expect to be caught, but they don’t look afraid. The emphasis in this painting isn’t on the sword, or even the severed head in the basket, but on Judith’s femininity and various aspects of it. Although our notions of beauty have changed somewhat, Judith as depicted would have been a smoking hottie by Renaissance standards. Notice the long nose, deep set eyes, soft jawline, and sloping shoulders. But there are other aspects of her femininity that are less obvious, like the incredible detailing and beautiful workmanship in her clothes and jewelry. All of this paints a picture of a beautiful, passive woman, despite the blood still dripping in the basket.
Caravaggio’s famous version (See Here) is pretty different. The blood spurts, the scene itself, unlike that above, is violent. But look at Judith, she’s removed, she’s not invested in her task. Her face says she would rather be anywhere else, she’s disgusted, but resolute in her duty. Her femininity is intact, as is her beauty, although she’s less idealized than Orazio’s Judith. Judith’s maidservant is older here and looking on intensely, but she is stripped of her feminity, lacking the youth, wealthy, and demurity associated with a ‘proper’ heroine like Judith. Even though Caravaggio was well known for his violent scenes (and temper, he did murder someone, after all) the morays of the day still had him characterize her as nonviolent.
Let’s look at last to the inimitable Artemisia Gentileschi (Orazio was her father) her version of Judith (See Here) is still beautiful, the scene is violent, but Judith is invested. Her face is violent and she isn’t removed from her task. This is a woman who is capable of violence, and audiences were shocked. Some called it gauche, some praised it, but it’s different.
TW: Discussions of Rape
Artemisia was raped as a young woman, and many believe the violence and intensity of emotion on Judith’s face is about her getting back at her rapist. While I don’t deny that painting as a therapeutic measure is a possibility, her status as a rape victim is often used as a catch all in academia. Everything she paints is considered solely about her rape, but she wasn’t a one dimesnional character who languished in her trauma all her life, and historical records show it, so I believe that using this lense and only this lense to view her art is disingenuous. She may have seen something of herself in Judith, but any woman in a man’s world could, and her use of violence in a female character doesn’t have to be about violence done to her, but her being a woman, thereby knowing herself capable of as full a range of emotions as any man.
Italian Renaissance art is only a microcosm of the art of Judith, but it’s an excellent glimpse into the portrayals of women and femininity, and how, although societal norms can view femininity and violence as near to opposite, there is a balance found in art, as with any visual story telling.

5 for the ask game :)
Thanks anon! <3
TV show of the year?
This is such a hard question - there is too much good TV, and I watch a lot of it. I'm gonna cheat and give my top 5 instead, lol. Not in official order, but close enough!
5. Cruel Summer and/or S3 of You
I put these two together and at the bottom of the list because I found them to be enjoyable and fun viewing experiences, but I was ultimately so disappointed with the endings that I don't care to continue watching them.
5a. Cruel Summer had such a novel storytelling mechanic, I loved the way it jumped between years. Using styling and color-grading to indicate what year it was took a little getting used to, but it's impressive how well the story flows once the mechanic is fully established. And Olivia Holt as Kate Wallis was incredible. I'll watch almost anything with her in it. The rest, including the "twist" at the end? Meh.
5b. Season three of You was really fun and chaotic, especially since I was able to more or less watch it alongside a lot of my mutuals. I'm just so mad about the ending. And I'm really worried we're straying into Dexter character where we're getting beyond the reasonable point of Joe continuing to get away with so much and not getting his comeuppance. If the next season isn't the last, I'm probably not going to bother with it. I started watching for Victoria Pedretti anyway.
4. Legacies
They really kicked the storyline up for the latter half of s3 and the first half of s4 (so far.) Triggering Hope's vampire side has needed to happen for too long, and I'm excited to see what crazy place they take it to next. It's the perfect blend of cheesy and campy with juuust enough angst and drama that I'm still invested in the characters and what happens to them without feeling overwhelmed by a constant barrage of trauma and loss. I don't put too much faith in CW shows anymore, but this is a fun one and I am curious to see where it goes, without being so invested that I'll be disappointed with any specific endgame.
3. Shadow & Bone
I really loved getting introduced to this universe this year! For one, every single person on this show is a total hottie. Like, wow. I'm frequently distracted by how beautiful they are. But more importantly, it's a really engaging and unique world. So much potential in the setting and the society and the dynamics between the characters. It was a wild and adventurous ride, and gave us a really well-rounded fantasy world to sink into. Something sorely needed after years of post-apocalypse dystopias.
2. Midnight Mass
This was such a gorgeous and harrowing meditation on religion and faith. It's a topic I'm really fascinated by, as someone who was raised pretty non-religiously. The performances were really subtle but beautiful. It's definitely a slow-burn, and I nearly gave up on it - but after The Turning Point (episode five, for that classic Mike Flanagan move,) I think all the build-up becomes so, so worth it and makes the final two episodes very gripping and compelling. It was inspiring and heartbreaking, and I was glad to see MF dip his toes into something a bit more drama and a little less horror. (Personally I think Mike Flanagan has what Ari Aster is desperate for in terms of that genre mix, but that's another rant for another day.)
1. Squid Game
Of course this show makes my list! I'll be surprised if it doesn't top most lists like this in 2021 retrospectives. It was such a tense, exciting show. Impossible to stop watching. I loved the characters and the setting, and the absolutely batshit things that happens when those two things collide. Episode six absolutely wrecked me, I was pretty much hysterical from heartbreak, but it was so well-done I didn't even mind. I think it's awesome that a Korean show was one of the most popular of the year, and I really hope it encourages more people expand their content search outside of purely English/American media - myself included!
Wanna join in? Send me an ask!

It was crucial to cry enormous crocodile tears this evening, and I did so unabashedly because my neighbours are away. Nobody wants to hear weeping and pacing from above, as though God was a whiny millennial concerned with “feeling seen”. The character of Shane in HBO’s The White Lotus sparked a bizarrely crushing debate between B and I, B brandishing his finest white male apologism dressed up as devil’s advocacy and me my deepest, still unaddressed, anger
To know the scope of the discussion requires a full season’s worth of Shane analysis and I can’t look for local allies since the show isn’t yetout in the U.K. I decided I knew Shane from the get-go. He’s the kind of guy who would laugh in your face when you talk about your career, your feelings. He might call you crazy. He might then ask for a blowjob. He is from family money, and ripped to compensate for a plain Anglo Saxon face. B searches for nuance that I don’t think is present, he calls Shane’s wife a gold digger and this could be a joke to rile me up, and even if it wasn’t, rile me up it did. The argument, at least for me, no longer seemed to be about Shane. “Maybe myopic estimation of the female psyche is why Shane is in his mid-forties and alone”, I wanted to say, “hoping a downtown New York hottie will wear his merch on Instagram”. Uh oh. How long has THAT been on my mind?
My housemaid’s knee isn’t going away, and I wonder whether somebody will eventually do me the kindness of draining it. I learn that it’s sometimes also called clergyman’s knee, and aren’t we all guilty of worshipping with no cushion? Having my mother look at my disgusting body phenoms yesterday helped. You have to file the wart down first, she said of my thumb knuckle, then penetrate it with the frozen wand. I demand answers from her about where I got the wart, and she says almost anywhere. M had told me at the weekend that you are supposed to bash a ganglion with a Bible. Why do so many ailments have religious leanings?
I forgot to tell her about how bereft my tennis partner leaving town for the remainder of august has left me. When we go to lunch with my granny, all three generations, the eldest of us usually dictates the flow of conversation with a handwritten list she brings. She lambasts a spa who recently treated her badly. She shows us her “trigger finger” that became permanently bent but that now won’t bend. I eye her hands and bare chest wondering whether ageing is so terrible. The skin is blotchy and thin, no real aesthetic crimes to speak of. Bizarrely when she speaks, everything in her body seems to move, stretch, shudder. The neck the most
She tells us she has never taken a painkiller in her life. One just gets on with it, she explains. I think of her “getting on with” menstrual cramps for 45 years, “getting on with” childbirth twice over. I forget which grandmother fell from a stool and broke her coccyx, it was the paternal one. I was so afraid to tell any of my school friends that my granny had broken her ass, but more than willing to share how she’d withstood the trauma of her father slitting his own throat and jumping to his watery death when she was young. Both sides of my family are led by vicious matriarchs, vicious in different ways. Different moral compasses entirely. They bring everybody together against our wills. Is it on me to grab the torch?

LMWTV4U: GOT S7E3
Welcome back!  In case you’re new, this is LET ME WATCH TV 4 U (?), the blog where I watch tv so you don’t have to! If you missed it, I wrote a special mid-week post this past week which broke down the main characters called: new phone who dis? Check it out here.
Also reminder that I have a new feature called “Why does this scene even matter?” (WDTSEM) for those seemingly useless scenes which may or may not actually be important later.
Tonight’s episode featured the FIRST EVER meeting of Bae and Khaleesi, so let’s get into it!
************************SPOILER ALERT************************************
We start off on Dragonstone….
Tumblr media
...which is the island where Khaleesi and co have posted up. Bae rows up with no-knuckles in a tiny rowboat and meets his old pal Tyrion on the sand. T is like remember when we met in season 1 and I peed off the edge of the wall that you were guarding lol jk lol jk? And Bae is like yep you were so wasted, bro. They also meet Khaleesi’s hottie translator with the good hair who’s like welcome, please hand over all of your weapons. And Bae’s like BUT I THOUGHT I HAD TSA- PRE CHECK! And T’s like naw, we’ve really had to tighten up our policies here. Some horse-dudes also take their little rowboat away.
As Bae and No-Knuckles (NK) are walking up to meet Khaleesi, her dragons do a quick perimeter sweep and really freak out poor little bae (see gif above). Watching all of this unfold from a creepy high-up-spying-spot is the Red Witch Lady who brought Bae back from the dead but then got kicked out and also Sleevey. The Red Witch is like I did my part, I brought Khaleesi and Bae together. And Sleevey’s like… don’t you want to see their first meeting? I think it might be like the Hamilton-Burr meeting in the musical Hamilton? And she’s like nope I got kicked out for burning a kid alive so not really welcome around him or NK. And he’s like ya you better get to steppin’ back East. And she’s like NO YOU better get to steppin’ back east.
Tumblr media
WDTSEM? Truly no idea. I guess we’re supposed to be reminded that Sleevey hates religion because a religious zealot cut off his who-ha and ho-ho’s and therefore they do NOT get along?
Now, if you’ll recall Khaleesi is a pretty kewl lady. She campaigned on an anti-slavery platform back in the East and brought together a bunch of different groups of people all while keeping dat hair and dem outfits on point. And Bae is also a pretty kewl dude. He supports refugees and fights for the underserved and also looks fly as hell doing it. I know what you’re thinking, ARE THEY BOTH SINGLE? THEY SHOULD BONE? Well, unbeknownst to both of them, they’re actually related; she’s his aunt. But considering this episode featured a sex scene between a man and a woman who happen to be TWINS, I feel like aunt-nephew is not too weird for GoT-land. Back to the point, this is the first time Bae and Khaleesi are ever meeting and due to their similarities on paper, you’d think they’d get along. But turns out they do not.
Tumblr media
Khaleesi is basically like #bowdownbitches and Bae is like naw dawg. They go back and forth for awhile, with Khaleesi explaining how/why she should overtake Queen Pixie Cut (QPC) and Bae basically agreeing but saying his real concern is the giant army of ice zombies. And she’s like lol wut? Ice zombies? Nice try, dude. Next thing you know, Sleevey rolls up and is like ruh-roh! Remember last episode when our pals Previously-Traumatized Theon (PTT), his sis Yara aka the Kween of the Iron Islands, and the Sand Queen lady sailed off to Southern shore to be mobilize our forces down South? Well PTT and Yara’s uncle, Uncle-Crazy-Pants (UCP) attacked them, burned most of their ships, and took Yara and the Sand-Queen lady hostage.
Next, we get a shot of PTT washing up and getting pulled into a boat where he reports that his sis was taken hostage and no, sorry, he wasn’t able to get her back. His peeps are like ugh what’s your deal, bro? But poor bb PTT has been through a lot so give him a break, ok?!?
WDTSEM? Well the Sand Queen and Yara were supposed to bring together all of Yara’s fleet of ships (which was approx. a buttload) and then head to Sand Queen’s home (Dorne) and bring together that whole army and then march up to King’s Landing, where QPC is sittin’ on dat throne. Now that they’re captured and their ships are burnt, this is a huge loss to Khaleesi.
Speaking of Uncle-Crazy-Pants, let’s check in on him in King’s Landing…
Tumblr media
UCP is marching down the streets of King’s Landing doing a pretty good impression of Aladdin during the “Make Way for Prince Ali” scene. The difference here is that he is dragging along his niece, Yara, as well as the Sand Queen (SQ) lady and one her Sand Snake daughters. He struts up to QPC on his horse and “delivers” her the gift of SQ and her daughter. Now if you’ll recall, one of QPC’s kids, her daughter Myrcella, got kissed on the lips with poison by SQ a few seasons ago and proceeded to die on a lovely boat trip in which her dad/uncle (Jaime) confessed that he was her real dad. So needless to say, QPC and Jaime are NOT FANs of this lady.
UCP is like here, QPC, I brought you these prisoners, can we get married and/or bone now? And QPC is like yep, sure can! But first let’s beat Khaleesi in this giant, ongoing war. She tells him he’s in charge of her naval forces and that her bro is in charge of the Lannister army. And since UCP is cuckoo, he’s like hey Jaime, can you give me sex tips for when I do it with your sister (honestly, fair question) and obvi Jaime is like NOT KEWL BRO but he has to pretend to like this guy so he bites his tongue.
Then QPC makes a big deal of locking up SQ and her daughter and then kissing the daughter on the lips with poison to be like #reciprocity I guess? And she’s like SQ will have to watch her daughter die and then also hang out in this cave forever. I guess all this torture is really a turn-on because next thing we know, she’s making out with her brother and giving him a blowie right there.
Tumblr media
The next morning, they’re all post-coital and he’s like I should...go? And she’s like naw, I’m the kween we can do whatever! And her maid sees them in their nudididity and is like eww?
Then QPC takes a meeting with an important banker who’s like…bitch...you broke. And she’s like gimme a minute, I got dis.
We stop back by Dragonstone to catch Bae bein’ Bae…
Tumblr media
By which I mean he’s brooding by a cliff. And Tyrion is like damn I was trying to brood but you look hawter doing it, which is v. true really. They chat about what went wrong back at that meeting between Khaleesi and Bae. Tyrion tells Bae to take a chill pill and think about how crazy he sounds talkin’ bout ice zombies and whatnot. He also tells Bae about all the good things Khaleesi has done and how she’s actually a pretty cool lady. Then he goes and does the same with Khaleesi, basically. He’s like Bae’s a cool guy and all he wants from you are these rocks that you have under your castle that you’re NOT EVEN USING so just let him do that. And she’s like ok fine.
So then we get to Bae-Khaleesi-meeting 2.0 where it’s just the 2 of them, standing on this cliff chatting kween-to-king. She agrees to let him mine the “dragonglass” (rocks that kill ice zombies) under her castle and he kind of agrees to support her in her campaign against QPC? Well mostly he agrees that QPC is no good and Khaleesi would be a better kween. Then Bae’s like… does this mean you believe me re: ice zombies? And Khaleesi is like… no comment.
We head North to Winterfell, where Bae’s sis Sansa was left in charge
Tumblr media
And boy is she doing a good job! Which is kind of surprising, only because we’ve never seen her utilize these skills before. She’s walking around telling people to start storing their barley for winter and telling the metal-workers to line their breastplates with leather and generally being a BOSS. Littlefinger, AS ALWAYS, is creeping around behind her doing nothing helpful. He stops to give her some advice about imagining every possible scenario at all times which is like, sure, a good idea in theory but who has time for that?!?
Suddenly her little bro, Bran, who she was told was maybe dead, shows up in Winterfell. She’s like OMG YASS KWEEN YOU’RE ALIVE! And Bran is just sitting there (to be fair he is paraplegic so he couldn’t get up) staring straight ahead and is acting all robotic. I guess it’s because he’s been through some trauma but at this point so has almost every character on GoT and they still manage to register human emotion.
Tumblr media
They proceed to have a heart-2-heart by the old-family-magic-face-tree and she’s like so...what’s been going on in the last 6 seasons? And he’s like I am the three-eyed-raven now I can see the past and the present and all scenarios at all times (hmm interesting that this is exactly what littlefinger just advised her to do...) And she’s like cool….so….do you want to be in charge now since you are the oldest living official Stark male and gender roles are apparently still a BFD up North? And he’s like can’t… I have to prophesize. Btw where’s Bae? We know as savvy viewers that he’s looking for Bae because he needs to tell him about the paternity results.
And then he vividly describes the night she was married off to her psychopath-ex-husband who then proceeded to rape her. He keeps talking about it, too, which I guess is to prove that he can see the past but also NOT trauma-informed and not a welcome conversation. It’s weird.
We stop by Old Town which is more and more like Hogwarts every day…
Tumblr media
Mostly because Jim Broadbent is there and because people are getting miraculously cured from turning-to-stone-diseases. Sam, Bae’s bestie, is still interning at the “maester” academy, learning to be a doctor/librarian and you’ll recall that last week he did some under-the-radar experimental surgery to treat Stoney, who happens to be one of Khaleesi’s besties. Now get this, STONEY IS CURED! The artist-formerly-known-as-Stoney is like thanks, Sam, I gotta get back to Khaleesi! And Sam’s boss is like I know you did that amateur surgery and you’re in big trouble but also good job I’m proud of you.
Our last scene is really a montage of scenes so let’s get into it…
Tumblr media
I have to admit that even I, GoT-viewing-expert (lol), was confused and overwhelmed by this last scene. So I’ll try to break it down as clearly as I can, but bear with me. We start with Tyrion laying out the current battle plan. Since Khaleesi is pretty ticked that their ships (well technically Yara’s ships but under her direction) were all destroyed by UCP, she mentions finding UCP’s ships and burning them up. How? Well duh, she got dem dragons! It’s strange because I’m pretty sure she’s talking about riding them and commanding them while at the helm, but she never really says this clearly. And Tyrion is like no that’s too dangerous, someone else should do it. Does he mean himself? MAYBE? TBD...
But for now, let’s get into the current battle zones:
Tumblr media
Greyworm (fresh off his recent sex scene from last week) and the rest of the “unsullied” army, were sent by Khaleesi and Tyrion to overtake T’s family home, Casterly Rock. There’s this whole montage that Tyrion helpfully narrates about how if the unsullied were to attack Casterly Rock by just popping up on the fortress, they’d be crushed since it was built so well. BUT since Tyrion used to sneak in his sex ladies and booze and other “unsavory” things through the sewer system, he knows it very well. So he instructs Greyworm and a small group to come in through the back and engage in sneak-attack-warfare. They successfully take Casterly Rock, but they’re like...that’s funny...there were supposed to be a lot more people here? And they look out to the sea where it looks like UCP’s ships are burning up all of the ships they rode in on. Which is a real bummer.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the rest of the Lannister army (all the people who were missing when Greyworm and co. attacked)  led by Jaime, is shown marching on “Highgarden” which is where Grandma Tyrell (Gma) lives, apparently completely alone. Remember that Gma’s son and grandkids all got burned up in that church-explosion by QPC last season and then she decided to back Khaleesi? She also told Khaleesi not to trust Tyrion and to “be a dragon.” Gma is looking out at this whole army of Lannister dudes and is like well...IDGAF at this point, really. Important to note that Sam’s Dad (who is a major dick) and Sam’s bro (who’s actual name is Dickon) as well as Tyrions old pal Bronn are on the front lines with Jaime, even though last week Sam’s dad was like I could NEVER betray Gma Tyrell.
WDTSEM? Remember when QPC said she’d pay back all of her debts to the banker? Well Highgarden is famously wealthy and has lots of important exports (like grains, for example). So with Jaime and QPC in possession of all of that, as well the coffers of Casterly Rock which he says he cleared out, they can now pay them back, theoretically. Also, Highgarden is down South so now QPC and co have a stronghold down there.
Jaime meets Gma in her study for some light refreshments and death threats. Gma is like well… shoulda seen this coming. Also, did you know your sister/lover is the worst human ever? Like seriously a sociopath? And Jaime is like, oh you think she’s so bad? Well how about this? She is going to let you die from poison rather than torture- isn’t that sweet?!? And gma is like ugh whatever give me the poison, put it in my wine plz. She drinks it in one gulp and then she’s like oh, BTW, I know that Joffrey (the evil little prince dude who was poisoned and killed at his wedding to Gma’s granddaughter, Queen Makeunder) is your son cuz of incest and also, I’m the one who poisoned him. And Jaime is like maybe mad or maybe not? Maybe just surprised? Gma is like tell QPC that it was me who killed Joffrey, k? Ps I hate QPC ok bai, time to die.
Tumblr media
WDTSEM? For so long QPC’s only redeeming quality (as told by all of the other characters) was her love for her children. After all 3 had died, she took over the throne and started in on this crazy reign of terror. Now she has SQ captive and is torturing her for killing her daughter and with this admission, she’s also killed the person responsible for one of her son’s deaths. Will ticking off those responsible for killing her main motivation in life help her find closure or make her more of a monster? I’d guess the latter.
Now let’s break it down:
Biggest surprise this ep: The attack on Highgarden! I did not see that coming and also did not fully understand at first. The way the scene was shot, it seemed like gma was in on this invasion, but obviously she was not, as she was later killed by said invaders.
Biggest letdown: Bran was so lackluster and un-enthuz’ed about finally seeing his sister and his hometown again. It’s like we get that you have magic powers now but could you show some effort here?
Important fashion moments: Bae’s meeting-the-kween-but-I-also-have-armor-on look was pretty fly and even though she is THE WORST, I was feeling the red-witch-lady’s linen-y red scarf/cape
Who died this ep? The Sand Queen’s daughter (the last of the “Sand Snakes”), a bunch of unsullied soldiers out at sea, and Olenna Tyrell (aka gma Tyrell) RIP.
Check in this time next week for more LMWTV4U and thanks for reading. Tell your friends!
Correction: I’ve recently discovered that I’ve been spelling Jaime Lannister’s name wrong for my entire blog-writing career. My apologies.
Also, you might IDGAF this but just to lay it out there, I purposefully avoid all other recaps/reviews/think-pieces about the latest episode in the time between watching the ep and writing this recap. Sometimes I will hop on to the GoT wiki page to find out a character’s name or check a fact but mostly it’s just my own notes that I reference.
WHY AM I EVEN SAYING THIS? I often will read other recaps/reviews after writing and posting this one and I’m like OMG WE HAD THE SAME REACTION/ SAID THE SAME THING about a scene or a character. So I guess I just wanted to say that any similarities between this recap and any other recap are unintentional and coincidental.
I know what you’re thinking: PROVE IT. Well, much like Bae trying to prove the ice zombies are real, I can’t prove it, I can only state the facts and hope that my time-worn face and honest peepers will be enough :)
