Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go “really? That’s so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"

This is a rant about "The Boys" comics parody version of Billy Batson/Shazam!
TW: Ranting, swearing, "The Boys" comics, and mention of S/A
You guys know about "The Boys" comics and how they did a side story of a fake Billy Batson where they made him a r*pist. WHAT THE FUCK!!!! You're telling me they made a kid into one of the most disgusting kinds of people in the world when he could have an incredibly unique perspective of the universe in "The Boys"!
I know the comics are meant to show the evil side of superheroes but that can be done in infinitely better ways! Like showing how Vought would react to a potentially powerful child supe, showing how the people closest to supes change in response to the powers, showing how complex figuring out new powers are (especially as a child), showing how power can turn the most innocent people in society evil, showing how others might seek to control or manipulate the child, showing how the child may unintentionally cause harm to themselves or others due to a lack of understanding of the consequences, showing him idealizing superheroes and finding out the truth in his adult form, showing ect…
Literally anything else would have been better but the writers decided they wanted a cheap shocking side story! If they do add Billy into the tv show then they better change the story or not add him at all because I will not stand for this bullshit!

Hello Pia how are you? Not really an ask but more sending thanks and love for all of your writing. I've been a reader for over a year now and am still in awe of your skill (and speed!). I've been getting back into writing and struggling with feeling inadequate or like my stuff reads childishly, as a result I can barely get out 5k aha, but I'm working viewing it as a lifelong dedication to improvement. (On a side note: your work got my teenaged self to snap out of purity wank, forever grateful!)
Hi anon,
It is so awesome that you're getting back into writing!
Honestly, it is a sign of a kind of growth to notice the things you don't like in your writing, because if you feel it reads childishly (and I bet it doesn't all read like that, or most of it doesn't), that means you have skillsets already to aim towards. You can see how you want to get better. This is a skill!!! It's a more painful skill, and it's not a good one to listen to all the time, but it's a good skill to have.
When it feels dispiriting you can balance it out by intentionally looking for and writing down your strengths as well, and writing more of those. It might be only a few lines, or it might be all of the dialogue, or it might be the descriptions, but there will be strengths too!
Also 5k is impressive! Everyone writes differently. It took Mark Z Danielewski 10 years to write House of Leaves, and I love that book a very great deal. Quantity =/= quality, and you also have to remember I've been doing this in a pretty focused way for 10 years! Trust me, if you did this in a focused way for 10 years, you'd be in a different place with your output (which isn't obligation to do this for that long, just that...things take time <3 )
I'm glad you were able to snap out of the purity wank mindset anon, it's a tough one to be in, because it makes you feel like you're not safe in your own mind, and after a while it shuts down curiosity because it feels like everything you're interested in has to be examined just in case it's a moral trap or says something 'terrible' about you if you show interest in it. And that's really hard! It makes sense to me why so many antis kind of really lock into what they think and believe, because they've gotten so used to treating themselves with paranoia, how can they not treat others that way?
And that's a miserable way to live. It's the opposite of benefit of the doubt.
So being able to separate from that is incredible! And that's a tribute to your own curiosity in the world, and interest in exploring different ways of doing things, and I think that's really cool. :D

Jealousy Episode
I decided to start translating at least some part of the 'Ivan Grozny' movie by S. Eisenstein so I'll share some of my favs all the way through!
This one is abt Fyodor being jealous <3
Tumblr media
The sundress swirling. Soaring, as if it got detached from the ground. Walking through the mansion like a hurricane. Fawning near the Tsar's seat. It stopped abruptly. The beads to one side. The braids to another. Under the mask — black curls. Under the brows — a familiar eye. Under the sundress — a familiar stature.
The Tsar loves to dress up. He loves to dress up the others as well. The masks — to make a ruckus. So does Fed'ka entertain the Tsar, dressed up as a lastikha*.
Fed'ka overhears the words of the Tsar: 'For I am an orphan with nobody to love and pity me...' Resentment starts growing in Fyodor.
Jealousy is taking over Basmanov: He is concerned with Vladimir's nearness to the Tzar. His eyes are burning with anxiety.
Ivan looks at him barely noticably, with his eyes narrowed. He winked.
Basmanov has calmed down: He understood, that the Tsar is plotting a game. Fawning twice as much as before. Twice as loud as before are the cheers: 'Goida! Goida!'

Some doodly fanart for @plural-swag-competition from a member of Team Sprigs! Shoutouts to Teams Blitzwing, Cassie, and Gamma System! All these rounds kept me on the edge of my seat and I think the teams my favorite boys went up against deserve some love too!
Featuring Rey (as Gemini Spark) and Blitzwing causing problems on purpose (Gemini Spark can make little waves that make people angry at each other and I think Blitz would get a kick outta that) !
Cassie introducing Pat to her bees (with Rey as an archetype) !
And the green and purple guys hanging out! Flower crown for the winner! Though Pat might need help reaching his head.

Sometimes I feel very sad that I didn’t just focus on one creative skill. I look at my art some days and go I wish I’d spent all my time making only that, because that way it would look better and I’d do more and it wouldn’t matter if I couldn’t write very well because my art would be amazing and I’d be able to make the stuff I really want to and maybe even get a job related to it and I wouldn’t feel like so much time was wasted. And often times it really does feel like you’re wasting time and everything is telling you to just pick something to focus on so it can mean something and you can never seem to pick one of anything.
And then other days I feel like an absolute GOD. Anyone else able to write your own fic and then draw art for it just because you can? Can you make an edit/amv after writing a silly little analysis post on the show/character that is so perfectly on beat and fits the lyrics and with transitions so slapping you get chills while watching? Can you write a short silly ditty on the guitar about how you’re feeling using the eight chords know and belt it out only a little bit off key then do a choppy little animation of your sona singing it?
I may not be the most skilled at all of the above, and it can be a little lonely to be a one man band who doesn’t play half as well as a lot of people out there, but when your power goes out or your wifi dies or you have a day off, everyone else is busy and you’re alone...
you play the best gosh dang music in existence
#knox rambles#feeling some kinda way lately o7#these kinda vibes come back every once in a while#just gotta remind myself that ten year old me would go insane over the fact I can do what i can do#even if I'm not the best out there I am sure the best me out there#and that's pretty cool#i may only know one strum pattern on guitar and half a dozen chords at best#i may not be very good with punctuation and grammar while writing and I reuse words too much#I may do my art all leaning a little to the left too much and proportioned weirdly#I may export my amv's wrong so they're not on beat or forget good audio that would have made it REALLY great#I may write analysis's that are a little biased and look back on them and cringe a bit#I may only be able to animate the simpliest and shortest things and then go months even years at a time without animating#I may struggle to do animatics for what feels like no reason even if i want to so badly#but I can do all that stuff#I can write i can read and I can draw I can play guitar a bit i can sing I can make animatics animations amv's#and wow that's pretty incredible if you ask me#rambling rambling zero thoughts head empty YEET HGSDFLKJSDF#creative insecurities#they always sneak up on you a bit hglksjdfsdf#pretty safe to say I wouldn't be a creative if I didn't feel inadequate every person to ever create usually feels some kinda way ghsdflk;jsd#lays down#woo#hoping I can get back into the swing of being creative#things been pretty rough at home but I miss making stuff#ANYWAY HOPE Y'ALLS HAVING A FIRE DAY

the difference between different subfields of linguistics and their takes on Chomsky is so funny sometimes because my phonology and syntax textbooks are like "we're building on this foundational theory that Chomsky came up with in the 70s!" while my sociolinguistics textbook is like "Noam Chomsky should be addicted to shutting the fuck up"

I love learning ASL it’s so good. Makes me happy to learn it. I’m so glad my university has classes for it with professors actually steeped in Deaf culture.
#blue chatter#am I good at ASL? hahahahahahaha. no.#ASL and English grammar are incredibly different and even when I remember my vocab I am easily clockable as hearing#but I do have some language capacity now. enough to communicate the basics.#and I just. genuinely really enjoy it. it’s fun to learn and engaging in a way most of my classes just aren’t.#and I can. yanno. communicate respectfully w Deaf ppl. and learn about their culture#which is incredibly important given that I want to go into a field where there is a higher incidence than typical of Deaf people#autistic? you’re more likely to be Deaf!#not to mention the fact that sign language can sometimes be a useful alternative to speech for nonspeaking/nonverbal people#depending on the person obvi; some nonspeaking/nonverbal autistics cannot use sign language and that’s okay#but surely at some point I will encounter either a Deaf client or a nonspeaking/nonverbal client who uses ASL#and when that time comes I should have some idea of how to communicate with them#I also rly like the Deaf church by my parents’ house#their community is really welcoming and their services are really interesting#I think it’s rly cool how they take intentions directly from the congregation#they’ll raise their hands and then sign what their intention is from their pew to the ambo#which is rly neat#it is funny bc every time I go the Deaf ppl I talk to will tell each other ‘go slow she’s hearing’#which is ENTIRELY fair bc. I am hearing. and I do need them to go slower.#but it also makes me laugh bc truly everyone knows within a few minutes.#oh hey the new person? they’re hearing. yeah they’re learning ASL at college. sign slowly for her.#which again makes sense bc a big Deaf culture thing is keeping ppl informed. it’s not gossip it’s getting everyone on the same page.#Deaf ppl do NOT beat around the bush that is like the height of rudeness to them. u say what u mean goshdangit. do not waste their time.#which I appreciate the heck out of bc i don’t have to try and phrase things delicately or w/e#it was also funny bc my mom came w me while I was home for Christmas and they asked her if I was her kid#and she said yes. and the lady running the kid’s craft corner thing was like ‘great you’re doing a craft now’#and I’m sitting there. visibly over 18 years old. amongst several seven year olds. trying desperately to figure out how to say hot glue gun#I made a v pretty pinecone tree it was a lot of fun ^-^

Translation.... is a fantastically complicated, demanding, and difficult task. And it feels like it's sometimes gotta be pretty unrewarding, because no matter what you choose, someone will be mad at you for doing it wrong. And I'm no purist, I skew hard towards preferring a translation to capture vibes (a subjective and squirrelly thing) over a literal one-to-one, I appreciate an artistic use of best judgment even if I ultimately disagree with the decision made. I've got so much respect for translators!
BUT.
That being said.
I feel like especially, especially in the context of something like a dramatic high fantasy novel, tone and register are so important! No modern terminally online transmigrators to muddy the waters! I'll make an exception for something hilarious, and I don't have a highbrow sense of humor, 'absolute unit' still makes me cackle. Something like "yea" (not 'yea, verily,' this is 'yeah,' said often, always without the h) may set my teeth on edge, but I can understand why someone might do that to me. "Tho" is more infuriating, but I can still.... logically understand how we got here.
But why on earth would you interrupt the build to a dramatic, tragic, intense scene by having our main character angrily call a crowd "newbs." I'm no longer in the moment, I'm staring into the middle distance and wondering why not just use the full n00b if it was going to go there. Sure, he's not talking elegantly, I get that. He was raised uneducated, not on 4chan. And the moment last night when I was reading and a character in ancient fantasy china proclaimed "Jeebus," I was filled with such incandescent rage that I immediately knew it was time to put the computer down and go to bed.
Jeebus.

I’m so mad that there are no language learning games that treat it like codebreaking.
My brain when lessons are like wrote learn these phrases with no explanation of why 😴 (side eyeing Duolingo)
My brain when a resource is like ooh~ is this a little pattern? A pattern we have to figure out? And there are rules which will help us break this mysterious code and understand things? And this is a game, so you will get a little reward? 👁👁👁👄👁👁👁
(if anyone knows any games like this PLEASE let me know TuT)
