girl typing a very specific question into google search bar, scrunching her face as she takes time to make sure she hasn't made any spelling errors, hitting enter, shaking her head as google only presents her with unhelpful websites that don't answer her query at all, moving her cursor back to the search bar and clicking on it so she can carefully write 'reddit' at the end, hitting enter again, sighing with relief as she finds a link to a reddit post asking the exact question she needed answered posted in a subreddit for a very niche topic, finally moving her cursor to click on the link, wondering why she didn't go straight to the subreddit earlier, only to be met with a deleted comment with a reply from the OP stating 'that was very helpful, thanks', sighing with frustration as she moves her cursor back to the search bar so she can copy the link and paste it into the wayback machine,

Level 9 / Lesson 3:ย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น and -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ
์๋
! Hey everyone! Today we have a pretty advanced and long lesson, so I hope youโre up for a challenge! Weโre going to be learning aboutย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น and -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ! Letโs begin!ย
-ใน/์ ํ
๋๊นย
Before we get started on how to useย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น, letโs look at this formula:
[verb / adjective stem] + ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์)ย
Attach -ใน ํ
๋๊น(์) to stems ending in a vowel
Attach -์ ํ
๋๊น(์) to stems ending in a consonant
-ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์) can come either in the middle of a sentence or at the end of a sentence. If it comes in the middle or ends an informal sentence, drop the -์. If it ends a formal sentence, keep theย ์ there.
{Past Tense} [verb / adjective stem] +ย ์ / ์์ ํ
๋๊น(์) โ> Iโll elaborate on how to use this later!ย
This structure is a combination ofย -์ / ใน ํฐ์ด๋ค andย -(์ผ)๋๊น(์).ย -(์ผ)๋๊น(์) meansย โbecauseโ orย โso,โ andย -์ / ใน ํฐ์ด๋ค is used to express some kind of will or intention or a supposition.ย ย
In an older lesson, we learned how to use -๋๊น(์). -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์) is similar, in that is also means โbecauseโ orย โso,โ but is usually used when youโre making an assumption. Notice how this structure uses -ใน/์, the future tense particle. It is typically used to make assumptions about what might happen in the future. I think some sample sentences would be helpful in showing this nuance.
๋น๊ฐ ๋ง์ด ์ฌ ํ
๋๊น ์ฐ์ฐ์ ๊ฐ์ ธ๊ฐ์ธ์.
[literal translation] Itโs going to rain, so bring an umbrella.
[more nuanced translation] I assume/think itโs going to rain, so you should bring an umbrella. / Itโs supposed to rain, so bring an umbrella.
Maybe you heard on the news that itโs supposed to rain later today. When your roommate tells you that theyโre going to be out all day long, you could say the above sentence โ you assume itโs going to rain, so youโre advising them to bring an umbrella. Itโs pretty common to use this structure for making suggestions or giving commands based on some sort of context.ย
Letโs see some more!
์ค๋์ ๋ง์ด ์ถ์ธ ํ
๋๊น ๋ฐ๋ปํ๊ฒ ์
์ด. = Itโs going to be very cold today, so dress warmly. / I assume itโs going to be cold today, so dress warmly.ย
์ ๊ฐ ๋ค ํ ํ
๋๊น ๊ฑฑ์ ํ์ง ๋ง์ธ์. = Iโll do it all, so donโt worry. (this may not be an assumption, but because youโre giving a command (telling someone not to worry), you would useย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น. This is because youโre presenting some sort of context for your command, which is that youโre going to do it all.)ย
์งํ์ฒ ํ์. ํ์๊ฐ ๋๋ฌด ๋น์ ํ
๋๊น. = Letโs take the subway. (Because) A taxi is too expensive. (here youโre assuming that taking a taxi would be much more expensive compared to a subway ride.)
Letโs see some sentences using stems in the past tense:
์ค๋์ ์ด์ฌํ ํ์ ํ
๋๊น ํน ์ฌ์ด์. = You worked hard today, so get some rest. / You must have worked hard today, so get some rest.
I found this convo from sayhikorean! Check their blog out!
A: ๋งํฌ ์จ๊ฐ ๋ฉด์ ์ ์ ๋ดค๋์ง ๋ชจ๋ฅด๊ฒ ์ด์. = I wonder if Mark did well on his interview.ย
B: ์ ๋ดค์ ํ
๋๊น ๊ฑฑ์ ํ์ง ๋ง์ธ์. = Donโt worry, Iโm sure he did well.
Notice how both examples communicate an assumption about the past of some sort. For the first one, the speaker is assuming that the other person worked hard today (maybe they look really worn-out or something). For the second one, maybe Person B knows Mark well and trusts that he did well on his interview.ย
Hope that all makes sense! Ready to move ontoย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์)?
-ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์)
-ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) is a combination of -์ / ใน ํฐ์ด๋ค and -์/ใด๋ฐ(์) (if you donโt know aboutย -์/ใด๋ฐ(์), check out my lesson here before continuing with this one!).ย In my opinion,ย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) has a nuance thatโs a little harder to grasp thanย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์). But since you knowย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์) hopefullyย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) will make sense as well!
Letโs start with some formulas:
[verb / adjective stem] + ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์)
Attach -ใน ํ
๋ฐ(์) to stems ending in a vowel
Attach -์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) to stems ending in a consonant
-ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) can come either in the middle of a sentence or at the end of a sentence. If it comes in the middle or ends an informal sentence, drop the -์. If it ends a formal sentence, keep the ์ there.
{Past Tense} [verb / adjective stem] + ์ / ์์ ํ
๋ฐ(์)
There are two main ways this is used. Letโs talk about the first way now. Hereโs a convo:
A: ๊ฐ์ด ๋๋ฌ ๋์ฌ๋? = Want to come out and hang out together?ย
B: ์ค๋ ์ถ์ธ ํ
๋ฐโฆ = Itโs supposed to be cold todayโฆ
Similar toย -ใน/์ ํ
๋๊น(์),ย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) gives the feeling of assumption. Here, B is supposing that the weather is going to be cold, and is expressing wariness toward going outside. B is assuming that itโs going to be cold out. Thus, B is pointing out that going out might be a bad idea, and -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์)ย softens the sentence a little bit so it sounds more natural and a little less critical. Letโs see some more examples!
A: ๊ทธย ์๋ฌ์ด ์ฑ
์ฌ๋ฌ ์์ ์ ๊ฐ์์ฃ . = Letโs go to the bookstore to buy that new book.ย
B: ์ด์ ๋ ์๋ฌด๊ฒ๋ ์๋จ์์ ํ
๋ฐ์. = Thereโs probably nothing left. [gives the feeling ofย โthat book is really popular, so thereโs probably no more copies left anymore since it just released today, so we shouldnโt go.โ Thatโs just an example of the context that this sentence could have.]
The next sentence is from Go! Billy Koreanโs YouTube channel โ itโs a very useful video so I recommend you watch it if you still have trouble grasping the nuance of these structures!
๋๋ฌด ๋ฆ์์ ํ
๋ฐ์. = Itโs probably too late. [gives the feeling ofย โI assume itโs too late, thereโs no point in goingโ orย โitโs probably too late, so you shouldnโt do thatโ]
Using -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) with -์/์/์๋ค๋ฉด
The second way to useย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) is by using it with the past tense version of the structure for โif.โ Attachย -์/์/์๋ค๋ฉด to a verb or adjective stem or a noun, and then end the next clause with the past tense version of -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์). For instance:
๋์ด ๋ ์์๋ค๋ฉด ๊ทธ ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๋ฅผ ์ด ์ ์์์ ํ
๋ฐ์. = If Iโd had enough money, I would have bought that car.ย
์ ๋ฐ๋นด๋ค๋ฉด ๊ฐ์ ํ
๋ฐ์. = I would have gone if I hadnโt been busy.ย
*Itโs also common to attachย ๋ง๋ to the beginnings of these sentences to really emphasize thatย โif,โ but itโs optional!
The difference between these sentences and ones not ending withย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) is that the ones that do end withย -ใน/์ ํ
๋ฐ(์) tend to really emphasize thatย โwould have.โ Like if I just had enough money I would have bought it, for instance. It may even give the feeling of regret kind of, like your regret about a missed opportunity.ย
Wow, that was a pretty long lesson! But you made it!! This is a hard topic, so I recommend checking out the resources I linked, especially Billyโs video, so you can better understand it if you need more help! I also used howtostudykorean.com as a source as well. And as always feel free to ask my any questions too!

Episode 1-3 / Grammar / -๋๋
-๋-
-๋- is a grammar particle used to indicate that you are remembering something that happened. It can have various other grammatical principles added before or after it which each give a different meaning, but with the same nuance of something being recalled.
-๋
We looked at the grammar principle -(์ผ)๋๊น a little while ago, which had the meaningย โbecause ofโ. Since weโve already gone through this principle, the particle -๋ is very easy to understand, since itโs just a shortened version of -(์ผ)๋๊น.
-๋๋
Here, we come to the main grammar principle that weโll be learning today. -๋๋ itself is quite easy to understand, since itโs a combination of the two particles above, creating the meaningย โbecause of (something I am recalling).
The difficult part of learning how to use -๋๋ is figuring out the nuances of its use. Howtostudykorean has a very useful way of working through it, where they split itโs two main usages: talking about what you experienced, and talking about what you saw someone else experience.ย
When talking about what you experience, the first clause that -๋๋ is attached to must be in past tense. In the example below, the first sentence is natural, but the second one is unnatural. This is because the result of the action canโt happen if the action hasnโt taken place yet.
My legs hurt because I walked all day
ํ๋ฃจ ์ข
์ผ ๊ฑธ์๋๋๋ค๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์ํ์.ย ย ย
ํ๋ฃจ ์ข
์ผ ๊ฑธ๋๋๋ค๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์ํ์.ย ย ย
When using -๋๋ to talk about something you saw someone else experience or a general statement, either the past or present tense can be used, but they have different nuances, so be careful to use them correctly otherwise your sentences may not make sense.ย
Yesterday it rained but today itโs sunny.
์ด์ ๋น๊ฐ ์ค๋๋์ค๋ ํ๋์ด ๋ง์์ย
์ด์ ๋น๊ฐย ์๋๋ย ์ค๋ ํ๋์ด ๋ง์์ย
Both of these sentences make sense, and both are used to indicate that something has happened, however, using the past tense indicates that the action has stopped, whereas with the standard form of the verb, it is assumed that the action is still continuing. In the first sentence, you saw it raining. In the second sentence, the rain had stopped but you still knew that it had rained because of the rain on the ground. This nuance can be very important, as with the following sentences:
The witness saw you kill him; it shows that youโre guilty.
๋ชฉ๊ฒฉ์๋ ๋น์ ์ด ๊ทธ๋ฅผ ์ฃฝ์ด๋๋ ์ ์ฃ์์ ๋ํ๋ด์.
๋ชฉ๊ฒฉ์๋ ๋น์ ์ด ๊ทธ๋ฅผ ์ฃฝ์๋๋ ์ ์ฃ์์ ๋ํ๋ด์.
In the first sentence the witness saw the accused actually kill the person. In the second, they saw what happened afterwards - maybe the person standing nearby or running away. If it were the first example, the accused would be more likely to be deemed guilty, since they were seen committing the crime.ย

2024.05.25 // week 5/10
it's been two weeks since i post a study update oops.......in my defence, i've been really busy! (cons of taking twenty credit hours haha.) i've managed to attend almost all of my classes in the past two weeks, which i'm very proud of! even though my linguistics class is, frankly, a drag </3 in nicer things though: the campus is blossoming, the weather is no longer cold, and the asian studies department did its annual book sale, where i picked up a whole stack of books for less than it would cost me to buy a single one usually. i'm also getting back to taking notes on my personal language studiesโpictured above: mango for iraqi arabic, and busuu for korean. i'm getting to a point with korean where i'm semi-confident in knowing some things, and i'm considering doing a summer study programme next year for korean, since my uni has a lot of partner programmes. i also finished my chinese midterms, and i have my turkish midterm next week. i'm about 65% done with my classical poetry final project, and i'm going to get a start on my (dreaded) linguistics final project and presentation.
