Level 9 / Lesson 3: -ㄹ/을 테니까 and -ㄹ/을 텐데

안녕! Hey everyone! Today we have a pretty advanced and long lesson, so I hope you’re up for a challenge! We’re going to be learning about -ㄹ/을 테니까 and -ㄹ/을 텐데! Let’s begin! 

-ㄹ/을 테니까 

Before we get started on how to use -ㄹ/을 테니까, let’s look at this formula:

[verb / adjective stem] + ㄹ/을 테니까(요) 

Attach -ㄹ 테니까(요) to stems ending in a vowel

Attach -을 테니까(요) to stems ending in a consonant

-ㄹ/을 테니까(요) can come either in the middle of a sentence or at the end of a sentence. If it comes in the middle or ends an informal sentence, drop the -요. If it ends a formal sentence, keep the 요 there.

{Past Tense} [verb / adjective stem] + 았 / 었을 테니까(요) –> I’ll elaborate on how to use this later! 

This structure is a combination of -을 / ㄹ 터이다 and -(으)니까(요). -(으)니까(요) means “because” or “so,” and -을 / ㄹ 터이다 is used to express some kind of will or intention or a supposition.  

In an older lesson, we learned how to use -니까(요). -ㄹ/을 테니까(요) is similar, in that is also means “because” or “so,” but is usually used when you’re making an assumption. Notice how this structure uses -ㄹ/을, the future tense particle. It is typically used to make assumptions about what might happen in the future. I think some sample sentences would be helpful in showing this nuance.

비가 많이 올 테니까 우산을 가져가세요.

[literal translation] It’s going to rain, so bring an umbrella.

[more nuanced translation] I assume/think it’s going to rain, so you should bring an umbrella. / It’s supposed to rain, so bring an umbrella.

Maybe you heard on the news that it’s supposed to rain later today. When your roommate tells you that they’re going to be out all day long, you could say the above sentence – you assume it’s going to rain, so you’re advising them to bring an umbrella. It’s pretty common to use this structure for making suggestions or giving commands based on some sort of context. 

Let’s see some more!

오늘은 많이 추울 테니까 따뜻하게 입어. = It’s going to be very cold today, so dress warmly. / I assume it’s going to be cold today, so dress warmly. 

제가 다 할 테니까 걱정하지 마세요. = I’ll do it all, so don’t worry. (this may not be an assumption, but because you’re giving a command (telling someone not to worry), you would use -ㄹ/을 테니까. This is because you’re presenting some sort of context for your command, which is that you’re going to do it all.) 

지하철 타자. 택시가 너무 비쌀 테니까. = Let’s take the subway. (Because) A taxi is too expensive. (here you’re assuming that taking a taxi would be much more expensive compared to a subway ride.)

Let’s see some sentences using stems in the past tense:

오늘은 열심히 했을 테니까 푹 쉬어요. = You worked hard today, so get some rest. / You must have worked hard today, so get some rest.

A: 마크 씨가 면접을 잘 봤는지 모르겠어요. = I wonder if Mark did well on his interview. 

B: 잘 봤을 테니까 걱정하지 마세요. = Don’t worry, I’m sure he did well.

Notice how both examples communicate an assumption about the past of some sort. For the first one, the speaker is assuming that the other person worked hard today (maybe they look really worn-out or something). For the second one, maybe Person B knows Mark well and trusts that he did well on his interview. 

Hope that all makes sense! Ready to move onto -ㄹ/을 텐데(요)?

-ㄹ/을 텐데(요)

-ㄹ/을 텐데(요) is a combination of -을 / ㄹ 터이다 and -은/ㄴ데(요) (if you don’t know about -은/ㄴ데(요), check out my lesson here before continuing with this one!). In my opinion, -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) has a nuance that’s a little harder to grasp than -ㄹ/을 테니까(요). But since you know -ㄹ/을 테니까(요) hopefully -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) will make sense as well!

Let’s start with some formulas:

[verb / adjective stem] + ㄹ/을 텐데(요)

Attach -ㄹ 텐데(요) to stems ending in a vowel

Attach -을 텐데(요) to stems ending in a consonant

-ㄹ/을 텐데(요) can come either in the middle of a sentence or at the end of a sentence. If it comes in the middle or ends an informal sentence, drop the -요. If it ends a formal sentence, keep the 요 there.

{Past Tense} [verb / adjective stem] + 았 / 었을 텐데(요)

There are two main ways this is used. Let’s talk about the first way now. Here’s a convo:

A: 같이 놀러 나올래? = Want to come out and hang out together? 

B: 오늘 추울 텐데… = It’s supposed to be cold today…

Similar to -ㄹ/을 테니까(요), -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) gives the feeling of assumption. Here, B is supposing that the weather is going to be cold, and is expressing wariness toward going outside. B is assuming that it’s going to be cold out. Thus, B is pointing out that going out might be a bad idea, and -ㄹ/을 텐데(요)  softens the sentence a little bit so it sounds more natural and a little less critical. Let’s see some more examples!

A: 그 새러운 책 사러 서점에 가시죠. = Let’s go to the bookstore to buy that new book. 

B: 이제는 아무것도 안남았을 텐데요. = There’s probably nothing left. [gives the feeling of “that book is really popular, so there’s probably no more copies left anymore since it just released today, so we shouldn’t go.” That’s just an example of the context that this sentence could have.]

The next sentence is from Go! Billy Korean’s YouTube channel – it’s a very useful video so I recommend you watch it if you still have trouble grasping the nuance of these structures!

너무 늦었을 텐데요. = It’s probably too late. [gives the feeling of “I assume it’s too late, there’s no point in going” or “it’s probably too late, so you shouldn’t do that”]

Using -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) with -았/었/였다면

The second way to use -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) is by using it with the past tense version of the structure for “if.” Attach -았/었/였다면 to a verb or adjective stem or a noun, and then end the next clause with the past tense version of -ㄹ/을 텐데(요). For instance:

돈이 더 있었다면 그 ��를 살 수 있었을 텐데요. = If I’d had enough money, I would have bought that car. 

안 바빴다면 갔을 텐데요. = I would have gone if I hadn’t been busy. 

*It’s also common to attach 만냑 to the beginnings of these sentences to really emphasize that “if,” but it’s optional!

The difference between these sentences and ones not ending with -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) is that the ones that do end with -ㄹ/을 텐데(요) tend to really emphasize that “would have.” Like if I just had enough money I would have bought it, for instance. It may even give the feeling of regret kind of, like your regret about a missed opportunity.

my professor in electrical engineering decided to kill me today, at the lecture we talked about one thing, and solved problems on a topic that we had not studied, or rather, he solved it, and we, like little kittens, watched and wrote down (his handwriting is disgusting, so we also deciphered it 😭)

• almost finished 80% of my math tasks (they are till sunday night, so I have a lot of time for these 20%)

• read my book a lot 🙏

• finished 2 serie of my favourite dorama (happy happy)

• listened to podcast about h2 in german, i have interest in this topic, so tomorrow i will try to read articles about it

• revised 🇰🇷 words (this days i'm not into korean, because i want to focus on german and physics related themes)

Episode 1-3 / Grammar / -더니

-더-

-더- is a grammar particle used to indicate that you are remembering something that happened. It can have various other grammatical principles added before or after it which each give a different meaning, but with the same nuance of something being recalled.

-니

We looked at the grammar principle -(으)니까 a little while ago, which had the meaning ‘because of’. Since we’ve already gone through this principle, the particle -니 is very easy to understand, since it’s just a shortened version of -(으)니까.

-더니

Here, we come to the main grammar principle that we’ll be learning today. -더니 itself is quite easy to understand, since it’s a combination of the two particles above, creating the meaning ‘because of (something I am recalling).

The difficult part of learning how to use -더니 is figuring out the nuances of its use. Howtostudykorean has a very useful way of working through it, where they split it’s two main usages: talking about what you experienced, and talking about what you saw someone else experience. 

When talking about what you experience, the first clause that -더니 is attached to must be in past tense. In the example below, the first sentence is natural, but the second one is unnatural. This is because the result of the action can’t happen if the action hasn’t taken place yet.

My legs hurt because I walked all day 하루 종일 걸었더니다리가 아파요.    

하루 종일 걸더니다리가 아파요.     

When using -더니 to talk about something you saw someone else experience or a general statement, either the past or present tense can be used, but they have different nuances, so be careful to use them correctly otherwise your sentences may not make sense. 

Yesterday it rained but today it’s sunny. 어제 비가 오더니오늘 하늘이 맑아요 

어제 비가 왔더니 오늘 하늘이 맑아요 

Both of these sentences make sense, and both are used to indicate that something has happened, however, using the past tense indicates that the action has stopped, whereas with the standard form of the verb, it is assumed that the action is still continuing. In the first sentence, you saw it raining. In the second sentence, the rain had stopped but you still knew that it had rained because of the rain on the ground. This nuance can be very important, as with the following sentences:

The witness saw you kill him; it shows that you’re guilty. 목격자는 당신이 그를 죽이더니 유죄임을 나타내요. 목격자는 당신이 그를 죽였더니 유죄임을 나타내요. In the first sentence the witness saw the accused actually kill the person. In the second, they saw what happened afterwards - maybe the person standing nearby or running away. If it were the first example, the accused would be more likely to be deemed guilty, since they were seen committing the crime.

저 대신에 제 친구가.. - instead of me, my friend..  컴퓨터 대신에 카메라를 샀어요 - I bought a camera instead of a computer 저 대신에 가고 싶은 사람 있어요? - Is there anybody who wants to go instead of me? 아빠 대신 엄마가 올 거예요 - instead of dad, mum is going to come. 여행을 가는 대신에 아르바이트를 했어요 - instead of travelling, i did a part time job. 

Verb ~는 대신에 - in return for, to make up for doing

이번에는 제가 도와 줄게요. 대신에 다음에는 저를 도와 줘야 돼요. 이번에는 제가 도와 주는 대신에, 다음에는 저를 도와 줘야 돼요 - I will help you this time but in return, next time you have to help me.  제가 이거 빌려 주는 대신에, 저 영어 공부 도와 줘야 돼요 - I will lend you this but in return, you have to help me with english studies. 오늘 일찍 가는 대신에, 내일 일찍 와야 돼요 - Since you are leaving early, to make up for it, you have to come early tomorrow

2024.05.25 // week 5/10

it's been two weeks since i post a study update oops.......in my defence, i've been really busy! (cons of taking twenty credit hours haha.) i've managed to attend almost all of my classes in the past two weeks, which i'm very proud of! even though my linguistics class is, frankly, a drag </3 in nicer things though: the campus is blossoming, the weather is no longer cold, and the asian studies department did its annual book sale, where i picked up a whole stack of books for less than it would cost me to buy a single one usually. i'm also getting back to taking notes on my personal language studies—pictured above: mango for iraqi arabic, and busuu for korean. i'm getting to a point with korean where i'm semi-confident in knowing some things, and i'm considering doing a summer study programme next year for korean, since my uni has a lot of partner programmes. i also finished my chinese midterms, and i have my turkish midterm next week. i'm about 65% done with my classical poetry final project, and i'm going to get a start on my (dreaded) linguistics final project and presentation.
