Prompt: I bring my students on a school trip to the museum/zoo/your niche workplace and you are the guide and you are being so nice with the kids, thank you for giving them a good time and hey can I have your number?

Under the "Sea"

The Aquarium was a nice place to spend the sunny hour of London’s summer hear wave. The place inside was cooled down, and the reflection of the light inside the tanks made the viewing area feel like you were at the bottom of the ocean with all the fish swimming about.

Lily had to admit that that was one of her favourite ways to spend the day, just admiring the ocean fauna as she escaped the heat and crowds of the street, as well as avoiding her sister at their parents place. 

It was an easy out, she had to admit, she had lied to her parents about needing to go and check the exhibits before school started, make sure her knowledge was up to date for the excursion she had with her class at the beginning of the school year. But a school of clown fish was always better than Tuney’s rant about how she was single and never took care of herself.

Due to the heat of the day she expected the place to be crowded, what she didn’t expect was the amount of people that arrived. Usually parents were busy during the week, but today it seemed that everyone and their little children were over at the aquarium. 

Excitement all around as the kids chased some fishes or sharks and their parents chatted over the colours and shapes trying to engage with the little ones.

Then suddenly there was a collective gasp and a bit of silence before one kid loudly screamed. “Mermaids!”

It was an unusual thing for it to happen, she knew that kids had rambunctious imagination, however, usually it was sprinkle between one or two, but it seemed that all the kids were running to the main tank to see something that apparently Lily was missing. 

Which made her curious.

Reaching the main tank she could see something that shouldn’t be there, there were the typical fish and rays, nothing too harmful or over the top, but then she saw what everyone was excited for. Inside the tank there was a purple haired, and purple tail mermaid, and with her there was a teal haired, with matching tail, merman. They swimmed around the tank, just waving hi to everyone, spinning and swirling inside the water. Sometimes they approached the tank’s glass and blew bubbles and put their hands on the glass to try to get the kids to approach them. 

It was adorable and exciting, and something Lily was not expecting to see on that boring day of summer. 

The kids loved the theatrics, she knew they were just actors with well maid props. She had to admit that the mermaid looked gorgeous, her hair was adorned with a shell crown that matched her top, with pearls all contrasting with the clam shells she had all around. It looked like her crown was effortless on top of her head, but Lily imagined that it was more complicated than using it regularly outside of the water. She kept swimming up and down; the red head imagined to get some air, and tried to go as low as possible, even getting some shells in her hands to show the kids that watched her every move. 

The merman, on the other hand, seemed to have more stamina, he didn’t need to get out of the water as much, but he really liked to go all out with the tricks, showing off his perfect muscles as he looped again, following the ray’s pattern, like he actually knew how to avoid any serious danger, but it still looked daring, and of course he knew his showing off paid off, as he threw kisses to the audience. Lily didn’t like this particular stunt as much as the mermaid, it felt like he was an arrogant toerag, it didn’t help that he winked at her while he was doing his stunts, like he knew she was watching; and she was, but not like that.  

It was professional interest that was all.

Lily watched the rest of the show, just to make sure what else the merpeople would do for a show. It was super entertaining for the small kids, and at some point one of the staff from the aquarium started to explain the maritime life that was swimming in the tank, and how either mermaid was interacting to make sure their life was not perturbed and the safety that needed to be maintain, also wrapping a take of how to take care of the Ocean’s life, which made it easier for the kids to wrap her minds around, and made the adults bring them more often to the beaches and aquariums as the kids would always love to see the mermaids. 

Lily had to say she was impressed. It wasn’t something she was expecting, and she loved the idea, her kids would ADORE the idea of coming to the aquarium and get to see the mermaids. 

Maybe she would be able to get the mermaid to talk to her kids, so they could ask a couple of questions, be more interested in the oceans and its life. They already had the trip approved by the school, maybe she could try and get some more information and get things started?

Asking the staff how to find this out was easy, they really liked the idea of the school trip becoming more involved, that is what the merpeople initiative wanted, however, she needed to clear it with the department in charge of the programming, and that was not outside of the guest area. 

One of the people outside guided her to a backdoor, where you could see the offices for the aquarium, the not so glamorous side of the business, where clerical work was assigned. They told her to go inside, pass 4 doors, and then to the left she would see the entrance to the mermaid tanks where the people in charge of the show would be.

She did as instructed and knocked on the door before entering. She heard a conversation mid sentence, they were two male staff members talking. 

“Prongs, mate, you need to approach the glass, or else the clients won’t interact with you. You know how Minnie likes the interactions.”

“I know, Padfoot, I know, but I’m blind without my glasses, I was afraid that I would just smash against the bloody thing.” someone mumbled, seemingly struggling with something. But Lily figured it was the merman and one of his fellow co-workers. 

“What happened to your contacts? I thought you had them? You approached Fred and George not being able to see?” The other voice was a bit concerned, as Lily turned the corner. 

It seemed the lack of interaction was justified, and Lily felt a little bad to have judged the performer harshly, but her thoughts became blank as she saw the merman, sitting, half naked, just wiggling out of his tail. 

Lily understood the male body, she had to be prepared to do biology for some of her classes, but if you asked her at gunpoint what took over her mind at that moment, she would only be able to reply: muscles .

It was unprofessional, she knew, but sweet lord, if she thought she had seen those muscles work at the tank, she was mistaken. Up close and out of the water, the merman looked even better than with the costume. How was that even possible? Did he train for everything to be in the perfect place? That had to be illegal, she needed to report these to someone, she ought, but she could barely form a word, much less make a statement on how unfair this was for the rest of the human race. 

She thought she could step back, and take control over her thoughts before asking for the person in charge when someone interrupted her thoughts. 

“Are you coming in?” a woman’s voice asked, trying to get through the door. 

“Oh… I…” she cleared her throat, and took a moment, the woman looked familiar, and then she noticed why, “You’re the mermaid.” it wasn’t a question.

The blonde chuckled, “Usually I’m called Marlene,” she offered amicably. “But still, are you coming in or out?” 

“Oh! Sorry, I just realised that you and the mermaid are the same person, the purple wig threw me out a bit.” Lily replied with a smile, “I was going in? I was actually looking for you? I guess?”

“Me?” The blonde asked. 

“Love, who's there?” one of the voices called from inside. 

“Someone calling for me, taking me away.” Marlene added dramatically, giving Lily a knowing smile. 

“What do you mean take you away? To where? By whom?” a dark haired man came to view as Marlene tried not to burst into laughter. He was tall and had long hair in a bun that was made to look put together, but it was still messy for a professional setting, but Lily had a feeling he liked it like that. “Are you taking my girlfriend away?” He finally asked the teacher, “I didn’t know Mars had a thing for redheads.”

“Sirius, stop.” she laughed, “I apologise about him, he’s incorrigible.” she said to the redhead, “And she’s a customer, I think?”

“Oh, don’t everyone have a thing for redheads?” Lily replied.

Sirius laughed at the comment. “I like you, Red.”

“The name is Lily,” she replied, not really annoyed, just providing a name, as she hadn’t introduced herself. 

“Pleasure, Sirius, and you met wonderful Marlene.” he said, shaking her hand.

“Yes, I have, she was amazing at the show. That’s why I’m here actually.” she paused and looked between Marlene and Sirius, trying to avoid looking beyond them, to the still struggling figure behind them. “I wanted to ask if you do sort of meet and greets? I have a school excursion with my class, and I’m sure they would love to ask more about the aquarium and meet a mermaid.” Lily explained, hoping that she was in the right place. 

“Oh! That’s lovely! I do do that.” Marlene replied. “I love kids, however, if you want a more educational experience, I would recommend you go to one of our other performers, as I’m more of an actress, they do have some people that know more than me.” 

“Really? I mean you do great with audiences.”

“She really does, but for the boring stuff you should go with Jimbo.”

“Jimbo?” Lily asked, confused about the name. 

“Yeah, Jimbo, the big oaf there.” he pointed to the man behind them that finally managed to put the tails away and was starting to get the wig out of his hair, his hand going to mess his hair, as it seemed to be too slick on his head due to having the wig on for water. 

“I’ve told you to stop calling me Jimbo.” Lily heard the still half naked man behind Sirius and Marlene, why couldn’t that man put a shirt on? Was he against shirts? Not that Lily minded, it was just hard to concentrate.

It seemed that he heard Lily’s internal monologue, because he was reaching for a shirt to put on, as Sirius replied “Fine, Mr Potter, better?”

“Arse,” James mumbled, after pulling the shirt on and moving closer to Lily, giving his hand out to shake, “I’m James Potter, head of the department.” he smiled, trying to be professional, but his hand twitched and moved to mess his hair again, “I apologise, I usually don’t take appointments after being in the tank.” he smiled again, “May I know exactly what you wish to, see what can be done on our end, Mrs…”

“Miss, Lily Evans, pleasure.” she shook his hand, calloused and warm, even after just leaving the water. Odd. “I teach third grade, and my school is sending the kids here the first week of term. I wanted to see if it would be possible to get a meet and greet, get them asking questions about the fauna you have in the tanks, that sort of thing?”

“Yes, of course, we can book that in.” he said with a nod trying to get something from his pockets, but he still was in the neoprene lower suit to fit inside of the tail, “I apologise I forgot I have my mobile at the office, would you mind coming with me to get this sorted?”

“Would it be possible to make a call later on? I need to request this from the headmaster at school, I’m sure they will approve but you know how it might be.”

Marlene chuckled, “Don’t we all?”

Lily had to admit that she liked Marlene in and out of the water, she was a bit disappointed that she wouldn’t be the one greeting the kids. “If I could get a number I can call later this week, I would make sure to get all the details.”

“Of course, you can have mine, I’ll get it on the agenda once we sort everything.” James replied, and Lily nodded thankfully, exchanging details so they could be in contact. 

The outing to the Aquarium was more productive than she early expected, even if she didn’t get the mermaid she wanted, she got something other school years might not get, so all in all it was a win.

Getting Alastor to approve the one on one with the mermaid was simple enough, he was glad that she took the initiative and applauded that she decided to include kids outside of her classroom.

She got all the details for 2nd and 3rd grade classes, there would be around 50 kids in total, and she needed to make sure James could fit all of those in just one meeting, or if they should be divided by groups, how to work it out, and how much more it would be. She had everything sorted when she dialled his number. 

The conversation was easy and professional, James made a few jokes that Lily found funny, it wasn’t odd, and he wasn’t as obnoxious as she believed at first sight. He actually seemed to care about his job, and made sure she understood the schedules and performances that needed to happen so they could fit all the kids that would want to meet a mermaid, make sure to stay on point, to teach them about the things that they were supposed to be there to see. And not deviate too much from the topics. 

In a few short weeks everything that James and Lily talked about was a reality, the kids saw him swim in the tank, he was more engaging with the people in the crowd. He must’ve gotten his contacts on, today. Lily thought as she saw the performance. Marlene was gorgeous as always, she felt a little envious at how lovely she looked in the water.

James was still as daring, but actually managed to get some of the kids engaged to the tank, he played patty cakes with some, and with the smaller ones he played peek-a-boo, which Lily thought was adorable, and the kids ate it all up. 

She hadn’t felt an excursion was as successful until she saw what the meet actually looked like. She thought James would be sitting on a chair with his tail all made to look like he just got out of the water, but in reality he was in a big tank that was decorated to get the kid’s attention. James was out of the water at the top, just up enough for everyone in the room to see him, but low enough so he could engage with the staff, and his tail could be seen swaying inside the water. The kids could not take their eyes off him.

Neither could Lily.

“Look, it's the mermaid!” One of her kids exclaimed, “Wotcher mermaid!” Little Tonks exclaimed from the seats they had taken. 

“He’s not a mermaid, he is a man!” Little Percy replied from the back of the crowd. 

“Hullo!” James replied back to Tonks and then shrugged, the best he could as he was propped from the tank,” I don’t mind mermaid or merman. Did you know fish can change from being boys to being girls if they think it is useful? Isn’t that wicked?”

“No way!” A tall kid named Bill from another class replied back. 

“Way! They can change for a lot of reasons, because of their size, or the age they have, or they just feel like boys instead of girls, or vice versa. There are a lot of brilliant things that fish can do. And I’m part fish, so I should know.”

“Have you ever tried to change and be a girl?” Percy asked again.

“No, I quite like being a boy, but it’s an interesting question. Do you think if I do, my tail would change colours?”

It was a random question, something that was not as serious as fish sequential hermaphroditism, but it certainly kept the eyes of the kids on him. Which Lily had to admire, not everyone could command a room full of kids to their attention.

James sold the part completely, he went in the water to get some “air” as fish survived on water, and explained how gills worked, how fish turned water into oxygen as we did with air. He added the names of the rays, and Bill said he had twin little brothers with those names, making James laugh. 

It all went perfect, Lily couldn’t have asked for a better interaction with the children. They couldn’t stop talking about the aquarium, and about maybe having pet fishes and taking care of them and the oceans. 

Once the kids left and Lily was safely back home she still had the image of James’ smile and his quick replies in her mind. She took her cellphone out and typed a quick message.

Lily: Thank you for today, it was perfect, the kids loved it. 

James: I’m glad they enjoyed it! They look like brilliant kids.

Lily: They really are. And you handled them perfectly, I thought we would have kids running away from the meet.

James: Thanks for the faith, Evans. 

Lily: They almost run away from my classroom when I try to teach them maths, it’s nothing personal, Potter.

James: Fair, but still, it seems they have a great teacher.

Lily: Thank you

A few minutes passed and Lily looked at her screen, she saw the name still on it, the conversation was simple, and to the point. Which she hated. 

For some reason she found herself desiring to get something more to talk about, to get the conversation going, to get to see what he would reply with. Maybe see him clumsily forgetting that he had a phone to begin with and being natural at just human interaction, being a great person to both kids and adults. Lily couldn’t help to shake the feeling that she shouldn’t stop the conversation just at that ‘thank you’.

Lily: Potter, are you free on Saturday?

Her heart was going as fast as possible without her dying. How would he react? Would he tell her that he had a compromise? That he was actually with someone? Did it look like she was asking him out? Or maybe it wasn’t too obvious?

Lily hated doubting herself like that, she was usually more assertive. She wasn’t sure what that man was doing to her.

James: Yes, why do you want me to dress as a merman again?

Lily could feel the joking manner of the in the reply, his jovial self shining through. 

Lily: No, not really, I was wondering if you would be up to get coffee?

The seconds that passed after she sent the last message felt like eternity. She was sure she made a fool of herself. That James would tell her their relationship was just business. 

What came next surprised her.

James: Name the hour and place, and it’s a date.

a wrap-up (ha!) of my new hockey experience

i’ve played (field) hockey for more than 10 years but i just started playing ice hockey and thought i’d write some of the stuff down. basically a group at my uni were looking for people interested and i joined up knowing NOTHING about ice hockey except Knife Shoes. but in summary: im now four different hockey players in a hoodie (indoor, field-field, field-goalie, ice ice baby)

(before anyone asks, yes, this was highly motivated by a recent reread of check please, but turns out ice hockey is heaps fun). rest under a cut to save your dashboards because i know that most people on my dash don’t care about (penumbra voice) spORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS!

the good:

you’re allowed to use backstick? WILD

also you’re allowed to stick check!! what the hell!!! one of the guys at off-ice grabbed the puck off me w what in field would be an ILLEGAL stick check and i was like “ok stop. hang on. i need some clarification. are you allowed to do [stick checks/obstruction/tackling from behind/swing tackles]” “yes” “there are no rules and i am UNSTOPPABLE” *immediately steals the puck back from him*

like two months of Actual Ice Hockey Training Weekly and starting from “can go forwards turn-ish and do hockey stops on one side sometimes” my skating skills are while not top noch, Muchly Improved. i can now do crossovers forwards and backwards in both directions, hockey stop both ways, and i know OF mohawks though they still elude me

having your own skates means edges actually..... exist. wild. i’d used hire skates all my life and got on the ice w my new ones and i was like. Oh. This Is It. Can Never Go Back Now.

wax for stick wrapping smells Good Actually. kind of want to. chomp it. (Forbidden.)

women are just. heaps allowed to play in the men’s league in my city w no issues so! if i end up medically transitioning i wouldn’t have to jump through hoops about it unlike field where i guess i’d have to start playing for the men’s club (which is a Separate Club to my current one and is from what i’ve seen super disorganised.)

was able to answer not one but TWO ice hockey-related questions at field trivia night. (admittedly one was a wild guess and resulted in me just going through all the NHL team names i knew until i went “i think that one sounds right”)

swapping which hand goes on top of the stick means that i can just do backstick stuff without my brain going “NO!!! THAT’S WRONG!!!!” which is a real good brainhack

i now exist in a weird position in the omgcp fandom where i have PLAYED and therefore have at least some experience to draw on wrt THAT but still very little idea of anything involving like actual NHL-related stuff (oh god does this make me bitty?)

im still not sure about whether “shoots right-handed” means you have a “right-handed stick” or if it’s like. the opposite. idk idc my left hand is on top bc otherwise i’ll start importing nonsense into my field game

no one told me how long shifts were meant to be in my first game so i was on the ice for like. a full five minutes. d e a d. (although my only point of reference was field hockey and again. that’s like. five-ten maybe fifteen before you get a sub.)

still don’t have a jersey because shipping to australia costs like. $50 extra? why this (still need to get one tho)

we’re probs not going to get any more games until next semester and tryouts for actual teams aren’t until like. october. h h h. gotta make do w pickup training till then

having a different hand on top of the stick means i have to relearn how to shoot. i want to be able to do these wrist shots people keep talking about. i can barely flick in outdoor anyway but. c’mon. wanna be able to pass strong.

the probably unnecessary but worth mentioning

i’ve been using my goalie smock as a jersey and look. it works. (bonus: it now smells kind of like the ice rather than just. goalie stank.)

have started wrapping bits of my field stick with hockey tape (and i hear you all booing but look. it’s an old stick i’ve had for about 7 years and it cost $40 bc i got it in the middle of the season and also it’s wood which i did not realise when i bought it but yeah the edges have started to shed a bit more than usual and while im not worried about it shattering like i was w my indoor stick because it’s wood it IS chipping at an increased rate and i literally just spent $30 on a new grip so i don’t want to get a new stick until next season at LEAST so. tape.)

most wild of the wild: my old indoor coach was at pickup training and i recognised her name bc it was kind of distinctive and she was like ‘how do you know that’ and i was like ‘i think you coached my indoor team when i was 12′

im trying to start fitness training for my field team and it is Not Working so far but i’m going to try.

5x13 Costume meta

Ok Costume meta time!!! let’s unpack all the goodies the wardrobe department left for us!

Going to do this chronologically because otherwise i’m gonna end up jumping about all over the place and its going to get confusing!

Also its super super long so its below the cut!!

Lets start at the beginning and we are already getting costume paralleling happening - Buck and Chimney are in very similar shades of dark royal blue - a colour denoting empathy and dependability, its also accepting and kind hearted but in darker shades it can also convey depression and fragility - both aspects are things Buck and Chim show in these opening scenes. (for anyone that is interested Bucks tee is a Paul Smith rainbow zebra tee which comes in at a cool $65 should you wish to purchase one!!)

we also have Maddie and Hen paralleling in grey - Hen is light grey marl (almost pale blue) while Maddie is much darker - charcoal grey. grey is not attention seeking - it is a neutral colour but we have the two extremes her so we should look towards the colour theory of white for Hen - purity, balance and clarity - and black for Maddie - strength and secrecy - also the implication of a barrier. Again all things we know Maddie and Hen represent - Hen is the relatively neutral one in this conversation - she’s on Chim’s side, but she also maintains an air of neutrality - she’s still friends with Buck and can see where Maddie is coming from.

The shark cage - YELLOW ROPE ALERT!!!!! Yellow ropes everywhere - the cage is attached to a  yellow rope which they took great care to show us uncoiling on the winch - it also gets ‘cut’ from the cage. Now where have we seen that happen before I wonder?!!  There is also a yellow rope attached to the side of the cage and shark guys secondary air source (breathing apparatus also known as an octopus and they are generally yellow - because they need to be visible under water - and yellow is the first colour they eyes wills!) honestly the callback to Eddie and the well - cut line, being trapped underwater - they are (not so) subtly pushing Eddies traumas at us!!

I’m only going to post the link here - but everything I said about Eddie and Frank in the therapy scene still stands - but I will add that Franks shirt - the plaid one - fits into my check pattern theory - what Frank says leads to Eddies breakdown - that box gets ripped open just like Frank predicted!!

Its insane that we cut straight from ‘talk to someone who can understand exactly what you’ve been through’ to Buck in that white pinstripe shirt - I mean hit us over the head with the parallels and foreshadowing why don’t you! 

we’ve talked ad nauseam about Buck in white and about it meaning danger - for me the fact that this white one so closely resembles the one from 4x13/14 and Eddies shooting to me means that its Eddies upcoming danger - his breakdown - which the shooting plays its part in creating - the fact that we also get the navy blue couch being carried into the loft like a dead body also indicates this being the case.

I’m going to side track slightly to talk about the difference between a button up and a button down - @prettyboyandthekid mentioned it in a post and I’ve had a couple of asks about it as well - its something many people don’t necessarily know the difference between so I thought I’d take the moment to show you - both pin stripe shirts Buck wears are button down - because the collars ‘button down’ - you can see in this picture (hopefully - tumblr has a habit of making them pixely on my feed!) the little button holding the collar in place. Button up shirts don’t have these collar buttons. We see Buck in both types of shirt, but more recently he’s been trending towards the button down shirts - perhaps an indication that he’s ‘battening down the hatches’ of his own mental health situation!

I am highly amused and interested by the choice to put Tay Kay in a dark teal tee - in part because its very similar to navy - so its way of throwing back to the shooting - but very much contrasted by the way its filmed - the busy constant movement of Taylor - the quicker cuts between Buck and Taylor - and then the couch being brought in.  

The thing with the teal tone to the navy though is that teal is the colour of morality, individuality, objectivity and control - all things Taylor is representing in this scene - she is the one in control of everything - dictating to Buck what’s going to happen - the fact they didn’t have the conversation about culling in advance aside - she is the one who says the objective lines ‘we’ll get rid of one’ etc. she’s also the only one actively doing anything - its her stuff - she is individual - its not both of them having fun unpacking into their now shared space. Taylor is also the one with the moral high ground in this scene - we the audience know Buck has cheated but Taylor doesn’t - she’s moving in because she thinks this is the next step of their relationship and that Buck asked for the right reasons - she occupies the higher ground! However we should note that she’s not listening - the hair covering her ears even as its pulled back indicates this - the one and only time we’ve really seen Taylor actually listen to Buck is when he told her about the team being off and it was the only time her hair was not covering her ears.

I’ve talked about Maddie leather jackets in this post and I still stand by what I said - both in relation to the black one from the start of the Episode and the orangey one she’s wearing at the loft. I will add to it though that the mountain top jumper is a nice humorous touch - Maddie is also occupying the higher ground over Buck, and in the scene with Chim we see her clinging to the higher ground she’s established for herself as she attempts to rebuild her life as Jee mother but separate from Chimney himself.

Chimney in beige - the colour of dependability and simplicity - it can be viewed as old fashioned and boring but its also soothing - Chim coming to the firehouse when Maddie is with Jee alone for the first time and wearing the colour says so much about him - there is an element of him soothing himself by going somewhere familiar while he’s on edge about Maddie and Jee being alone together for the first time (aside from the fact that I assume he was there to get himself put back on the 118 shift rota!) it’s also indicative that he is trying to adjust to his different role in Maddie life - by being dependable but at a distance.

Costuming aside for a minute it wasn’t lost on me that Lucy threw a red dish towel at Jonah when he was talking about having to pack his bags because Chim was back - literally throwing a red rag at a bull - Jonah is evil theory keeps on winning!

Perry - wearing plaid several times - plaid/check theory for the win!! we also see it come into play again when Oren (the spider guy) is wearing a plaid shirt when he is worried about his spiders.

Putting Albert in khaki green when he’s doing battle with getting fish into the freezer, trying to hold off Chim from checking up on Maddie and Jee and then as he is forced to witness their mini fight is a nice touch as well - he’s inadvertently ended up in a battle ground!

The Buck Taylor confession colouring being stronger versions of the Eddie Ana break up is fairly obvious and we do see more fire in the way it plays out, but it is also, and probably more importantly - a reverse of the colour ways they were wearing when Buck thought Taylor was pulling away and keeping secrets (there are literally no screenshots of them together in this colour way so you only get one of Buck and a tiny bit of Taylors shoulder!!). 

There are two interesting things about these three scenes - that the colours are getting progressively stronger/darker and correlation between all three scenes is who is in what colour - green on the one holding something back or keeping secrets (because Eddie was keeping his lack of feelings for Ana a secret) and Blue on the person being kept in the dark. Buck is now the one keeping secrets (which he’s about to confess) so he’s now the one wearing green while Taylor has changed into blue - a blue jumper that mirrors the one Buck wore on his failed date with Veronica - when interestingly Buck is looking for (and finds) a fork before trying to take out the rotting trash but returns with it because he discovers Veronica lives in the building - honestly is a parallel that made me snort in a very undignified way!

Maddie wearing a brown jumper with what essentially says ‘The Great Buck’ on it when we witness her conquer her fear of giving Jee a bath in that bathroom because she is ‘the great buck(ley)’  in this scenario - chefs kiss costume team, chefs kiss. Brown is the colour comfort and stability it is also a colour of counsel and wisdom - as we see Maddie providing both counsel and her wisdom to Albert!

Tay in a rust coloured top when Buck comes home to find her in the loft is an interesting choice  - especially as she has the triangle necklace back on and her hair is still covering her ears! The colour itself is a combination of orange and brown - so looking at the colour meanings there is about stability and dependability but also insincerity, superficiality and some arrogance - all things we can associate with Taylor - but in this instance also with Buck. 

Buck is in black - completely in black - so mystery and secrecy, he lack of colour, but also the implication of barriers pessimism and lack of hope - things Buck is displaying he’s being led by what Taylor wants because the situation he’s got himself dictates it - but because his colour is actually the lack of colour we should focus on Taylors colour more - Buck clinging to a relationship because it offers him  modicum of stability and dependability but there is secrecy and a lack of hope for the relationship because it has always been a superficial and insincere one - the writing is on the wall!

I’m also very intrigued by the fact the colour matches wife 1 in xmas episode - the one who talks about knowing about thinking there was another woman but telling herself it didn’t matter because he came home to her - in fact that whole conversation in the Christmas episode is very interesting to me in the the way it could potentially be foreshadowing for how the Buck Taylor Lucy triangle could play out when Taylor discovers Lucy is who Buck kissed.

Ok Eddies breakdown - I want to focus on his shirt because they packed a lot into a simple tee! - firstly its olive drab - that green khaki we see Eddie in various shades of. this particular tee is pushing towards true khaki - the colour he would’ve worn in Afghanistan - so straight away we’re being subtly manoeuvred into thinking along army Eddie lines - which is then confirmed when he picks up his silver star - a different one to the one we see in 3x15 but I guess the props team didn’t keep the first one or they managed to get one in a box that’s more like the one Eddie would’ve had because the yellow box was an older style! (I mean I could go into how his silver star being on a yellow background showed Eddie communicating a part of his life he’d not really spoken much about before whereas it now being on a grey background shows the army fading importance in his life - how its no longer how he defines himself - but that’s maybe a whole other post!!) 

Its not just about the colour of the shirt though - up to now in 5b, all eddies tops have looked immaculate and ‘fresh out the packet’ - playing into the idea of a fresh start for Eddie (and Christopher)-  but this one doesn’t look new and shiny - this is Eddie back in his old skin - one that’s worn and familiar -  look at the sleeves because they’ve been cut off - so that tee was probably once a long sleeved tee - another indication that this shirt is lived in and has been adapted to make it last a bit longer (the perfect metaphor for Eddie - trying to keep his old self together - he’s adapted to survive longer). The fact they’ve been cut off and are now rolling up on their own - no longer providing the full coverage of the long sleeves is interesting - that’s not Eddie choosing to roll up his sleeves and do something - the rolling up is happening of its own accord. That one is rolling and the other isn’t also highlights this idea that its not of eddies choosing - that this ‘persona’ he’s been adapting so he doesn’t have to show his true self - its peeling away of its own volition -  he’s no longer in control. 

Chris being in yellow and being the one to open the communication with Buck - made my heart sing - yellow theory is still going strong! its not just about yellow meaning communication in this instance though - its about Chris being the light that will help guide Eddie out of the darkness - the spark that will light the flame to guide his way!

Its also been pointed out elsewhere that the yellow shirt - combined with Bucks red jacket is giving off major tsunami vibes (i’ve run out o images to show you and I can’t find the post that was made about it!) - this is very true and the parallel is an important one to note - however there is the potential of an even more striking one later in the season and we know Buck will be wearing a white tee, pink corduroy jacket and his hair will be in curls - if it transpires that its for a scene with Chris and he’s wearing yellow - then honestly - be afraid - but also hopeful - because the meaning will be clear - Buck will always save Christopher and it will re-enforce an already strong bond!

Ok onto Bucks Red Jacket (which is technically a button up shirt but i’m calling it a jacket for the purposes of this meta so we don’t get confused!) 

Its a doozy - there is sooo much packed into that jacket (and t-shirt). First up there is the very blatant nod towards Smallville. 

Having nodded towards the BTVS tara shooting with the costuming in 4x13/14 its not necessarily a surprise to see them nodding towards another cult tv show. What’s interesting beyond the matching colours and the use of a similar jacket is the connection with a reporter in love with a main character - a reporter who frequently states her desire to "expose falsehoods" and "know the truth" (remind you of anyone?!) one who was prepared to reveal her love interests secret to the world and one who interestingly became spineless in season 2 - when she was pining over Clark (this is how ethical conflict truthers can still win!). 

Taylor might not be pining over Buck as she’s in a relationship with him, but she has lost her backbone and ‘love’ has her acting very differently to her previously established character - so it will be interesting to see if they play into the link and we get Taylor exposing a secret o Bucks - especially in light of the very pointed conversation about ‘no more secrets.’ The superman connection of course doesn’t end there - Eddie calls Chris ‘superman’ and now we get Buck ‘flying in’ to the rescue when Christopher calls (a little like when Lois calls for help Superman comes!) 

The actual colour of Bucks jacket is interesting - bright red - scarlet red - the colour worn in the catholic  church by its cardinals (second to the pope in order of precedence) to represent the blood of Christ and Christian martyrs. When you consider the show has utilised religious iconography throughout - it’s not a stretch to push the concept of Chris reaching out to Buck because he’s second only to Eddie in Christophers life. Scarlet is also a colour which means devotion, sacrifice, courage and passion all things we see Buck exhibit in this scene. we also can go back to the pairing red over blue - the colours of emergency service lights - Buck is coming to the rescue re-enforced!

Then there is the material of the jacket itself - its a broadcloth - this is both interesting and important - broadcloth is an awesome fabric and its been around for a long time - it is made from wool and it is naturally fire resistant, water proof, breathable and warm - it is the fabric that the first firefighter uniforms were made of and it has long been the cloth of choice for the military (until modern synthetic fabrics took over in the 60’s!). the other fun fact is that its the same scarlet as the British Red coats wear - think battle of waterloo and the US war of independence! the reason I love this fabric choice is it reflects so much of what that scene is about - Buck going in to battle for his Diaz boys - his family. we also have the connection to the blue and red parental roles theory - Buck is stepping into both roles at this key moment because Eddie isn’t in a position to and it just goes to re-enforce the fact that Buck putting Christopher and his wellbeing first twice in quick succession and over Eddie the way a parent would that Eddie and Buck are fully coparenting Christopher at this point in time 

There is another little aside with this jacket - its very very similar to the black Jacket buck wears in his Taylor conversation (which is an actual jacket) - the fabric is the same and the cut and use of pockets is similar enough that i’m pretty confident we’re supposed to contrast them - black v red - death v life secrets - lack of colour v strong emotions and passion - blending in v standing out. these are all things we can associate with the two relationships - they show us how far apart they truly are because black and scarlet red is the biggest contrast you can get in colour terms aside from white and yellow - and Chris has those two colours covered in the breakdown scene.

2001: Quest for the Masks

Part 6.11: 8549 Tarakava

The Tarakava are by far the strangest of the 2001 Rahi sets. And this is Bionicle, so that’s saying something. The Tarakava are the only Rahi whose real-world counterpart is not immediately obvious. The Nui-Rama are mosquitoes, the Nui-Jaga scorpions, etc. Even the Manas convey the crab look well enough. But what are these things? What animal lives in the ocean, has treads for feet, and has giant arms ending in boxing gloves? They’re described as being lizard-like, and their heads are fairly reptilian, so that works. But, uhhh…yeah. Not much else screams aquatic reptile here. Over time, I've realized supposed to be crocodiles, and that does make sense, but it still doesn’t explain the treads or punching. I think the designers really just came up with the punching gimmick and wanted to include it in something, so they came up with something and threw it on. Which is fine, honestly. The Tarakava are unique, and Bionicle thrives on uniqueness.

The Tarakava dwell in the shallows of Ga-Wahi, where they sometimes compete with the Ga-Matoran or their natural enemy, Takea Sharks, for fish. Tarakava infected by Makuta become even more aggressive, and are known to attack Ga-Koro and sink entire huts. Once their infected mask is removed, however, they become docile and can be tamed.

The two Tarakava featured in the set feature the same core build, but customize it with different armour to appear unique. One is teal in colour with a more boxy build and a Kakama on its snout, while the other is blue with a sleeker design and a Pakari. Of the two, I prefer the blue one for its appearance in MNOG and its sleeker look.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to the Tarakava that conveys an aquatic theme, apart from the colours. Their bodies end in large treads, great for moving about on land, but not ideal for the water. Several 2001 Rahi have treads, and it does convey the mechanical side of things well, though I think it undermines the animalistic-ness of the designs. They’re fine, I suppose, but I wish we had actual rear limbs instead. Then again, maybe the treads are supposed to be a tail, and the Tarakava have skipped out on rear limbs entirely in favour of more well-developed tails and forelimbs. Regardless, it is pretty fun to roll the Tarakava around. They can bend over to make pushing them along easier and it makes them look like they’re raring to go, and they also have a convenient little kickstand, which eliminates what could have been a major balance issue.

The tread assembly is connected to a large System beam that serves as the Rahi’s handle, and unfortunately, the treads cannot be moved in relation to this beam at all. I have disassembled and reassembled them on occasion to reposition the treads into a pose that makes the Rahi look like it’s swimming, and I find it makes the creature more believable overall, so I wish that was easier to do and didn’t require partsforming.

(Fun fact: the MNOG design of the Tarakava is actually a Sand Tarakava recoloured blue)

The handle assembly is sparse, but effective. It’s comfortable and provides easy access to the function. Similarly, the arms are quite basic and gappy, but they need to be to pull off their motion. The armour covers them decently, and I commend the use of missiles as fists. Shame they can’t move apart from the function, though.

The heads are very well designed and are the most coherent parts of the figures. The blue one’s head, in particular, I find to be very reptilian. I enjoy the layering of the Technic panels over the masks, and the teal one’s nose is a cool little assembly. The eye connection is quite innovative as well. Their snouts can be knocked down by a blow to the right spot, exposing their masks and making them more easily beaten. Not quite sure if there's a biological purpose there, though.

Of course, the main draw of the Tarakava is their function. Rock’em Sock’em Rahi, I’ve heard these guys called, and it’s a fitting title. By pulling down levers on the creatures’ backs, highlighted in yellow, you can send one or both of their arms shooting forward in a powerful punching action. While not quite as powerful as the Nui-Jaga’s sting, the Tarakava’s punch is still very strong, and masks will be sent flying in only a couple of hits or with one well placed strike. Honestly, this feature makes the wonky design worth it. It’s a lot of fun to roll the Tarakava around, throwing haymakers and knocking off masks everywhere you go. Crocodiles with boxing gloves. Sounds like a Pokémon design. No wonder it’s awesome :P

The Tarakava are really fun and are some of my favourite 2001 Rahi, even more so after watching Peri's Water Pressure and falling in love with Kotu and Kiriri. Who knew Tarakava could be so stinkin' cute? I just wish I had the parts to build the full Tarakava set instead of the blue and teal franken-mix I have now, pictured above. Alas, someday.

beauty routine: nothing really ; patroclus keeps his beard neat and his hair trimmed. he oils and curls his lashes, oils his beard. he misses baths –– big baths that you could sit in and just stay in until you pruned. but he only has a shower in his apartment now. 

sleeping habits: patroclus hasn’t slept through the night since before his first death ; nowadays, it’s a few hours of sleep at a time, and plenty of nightmares to keep him company. the good thing is, he’s very used to waking up early –– rather than tossing and turning or watching his ceiling until dawn, he’s up and out of bed. 

oldest belonging: he doesn’t have anything –– nothing. patroclus always leaves things behind, always. it’s easier that way. and sure, he regrets it sometimes. but there’s no use crying over the past, right? not when he has an endless future. 

living space && home: it’s small –– it’s really small. but it has bay windows, a shitty little terrace with doors that the wind knocks open, and plants everywhere. there’s a kingsize mattress on the ground, one set of sheets total and they’re made of cotton-silk. orange, of course.  

INTRODUCTION : tw death ; tw war .

his childhood wasn’t pretty. patroclus was born too skinny, too weak –– maybe not sickly, but he wasn’t wanted. he wasn’t loved. he was born into a war, and his war was his father. his war was his father’s shame. so when he killed another by accident –– in anger, in frustration, by mistake –– his father was more than happy to ship him off ; and somehow, that was the greatest gift his father could have ever given him. thanks, dad. 

it’s been so long, everything feels like a dream. it feels too sunlit and too warm to the touch. it feels too easy. and sure, he can’t remember all that much about it. but he remembers achilles. he remembers being so happy that he felt sick to his stomach. but he doesn’t remember hector’s knife in his stomach or dying that very first time. but he remembers waking up to hades in the underworld, and he remembers the sickening realisation that he could never go back ever again –– he was here, and he was alive, and he still had to leave everything he once knew behind. 

patroclus didn’t want money or fame ; he’d only ever wanted a love to call his own and a place to call his home. and since he’d lost both already, he was tired. so he went off to work on an orange farm, right at the edge of the world –– or well, the edge of his world. he was still in greece, news travelling to them every few months or years, and it was alright. he was away from the rest of the world, labouring under the cruel sun and sleeping into the cool night, and waking up to do it all over again. he smiled at the kids on his way into town and gave them an armful of oranges each. and then when people began to wonder whywhywhy he wasn’t aging, patroclus moved on to the next village –– and then the next, and then the next. 

it was 1465 + he was in florence when he saw a lute again –– a laugh escaping him before he could start to remember when he last laughed out loud. it reminded him of home, of a long time ago. so he began to play for money and food and a place to stay. and it took him all over the world –– meeting people who’d die before he’d reach his next destination and learning things he’d never be able to forget. 

going to war became a habit. the crusades, the gallic wars, the jacobite rising, the war of the roses, the french revolution, the seven weeks war, world war i, the russian revolution, world war ii, and so very many more –– patroclus wasn’t really fighting, but he was trying. he was trying to make sure some good came out of them, that there was some death that he could stop, some blows he could take if it meant another lived. but at some point, he just couldn’t keep doing it anymore. his heart hurt and his nightmares followed him in the daylight. 

now, well –– he’s a harpist for the londinium symphony. patroclus has been her for all of about 12 years now ; he doesn’t want to move, not yet. but throughout his many, many lifetimes, he’s perfected and loved the harp –– it’s the only thing he recognises in this brave new world, and he’s going to hang onto it for as long as he can. 

WANTED CONNECTIONS.

survival of the stubborn: a mentor, someone patroclus met after a long, long time of being immortal, but someone who taught him to stop being completely miserable and enjoy the time they have. if it wasn’t for this person, patroclus probably wouldn’t have lasted all that long.

death becomes you: immortal friends ; the gang, the squad. the ride or dies –– so to speak. they can go decades without talking or meeting, but they get together again every fifty years and know they can rely on each other. plus, they can literally whatsapp each other now –– like, what. 

orange you glad to see me: he worked on an orange farm in greece after their first death in about 1200 BC, and met this person there. maybe this person owned the farm, maybe this person was just a guest of the owners, maybe they also worked on the farm, or maybe they just met each other in the village nearby –– but they met again years and years and years later and it was a lowkey lightbulb moment of oh, so i’m not alone out here for patroclus !!

okay, three things- the shape of my fingernails. my cuticles are rounded and i really like the shape it gives my nails? i actually take care of my cuticles because i like them, stuff like moisturizing and pushing them back. i also have these faint freckles on my cheekbones that are like, further to the sides of my face? idk how to describe it. anyhow, i really like them- they’re like tiny constellations on my face. my mom always tries to use getting freckles as a way to remind me to put on sunscreen but unfortunately for her i already have freckles and i love them. also! my eyes. they’re very dark brown which is super common, but i like their shape and the way my lashes look (they’re not long or anything, i just- like the way they look).

8. Average Hours Spent Sleeping

if left to its own devices, my body will sleep exactly nine hours and then wake up unless i’m super tired, like if i’ve spent lots of time socializing or exercising. because school tires me out a lot on weekends i typically sleep eleven hours on saturday and ten on sunday. however, because summer vacation’s coming i’ll likely even out to nine hours a night.

9. Cats or Dogs?

cats! mainly because i can’t tell what dogs are thinking. do they like how i’m petting them? do they want me to stop? would they prefer i pet them somewhere else? cats’ll let you know. dogs are typically almost always happy, yes, but i don’t know what they want....

10. Number of blankets you sleep with?

i sleep on a bedsheet with three pillows (plus an extra body pillow to seal the gap between my bed and the wall. there’s a socket that i use to plug in my lamp) and a duvet year round. if i’m hot in summer i’ll sleep half out of the duvet or on top if it gets really really hot

11. What’s your dream trip?

i don’t know, actually- probably a tour of europe by myself or with a group of close friends, eating local food, seeing the local countryside and visiting museums.

13. Best place to visit in your home country?

oof, Canada’s really big.... it really depends on who you are, what you want to see etc. as a general rule the further east you go the more friendly people are (or so i’ve been told) and the smaller towns tend to be. i’ve never been to other provinces actually, so i only know BC. the islands here are nice though! you can take the ferry and do some hikes, eat good food, see deer and maybe seals and orcas. i’ve also been told the Rocky Mountains are very beautiful.

14. Favourite ice cream flavour?

i had this one flavour once from a small ice cream shop called wild and reckless. it was vanilla with streaks of raspberry and chocolate and it was everything i want in an ice cream flavour, chocolate but not too much, vanilla, and raspberry. it was amazing. sadly, i’ve never encountered it since. i still think about it though. i’ve literally ordered it from an ice cream shop in my dreams. wild and reckless aside, moose tracks scores major points with its peanut butter cups (mom recently bought a tub of sasquatch tracks? i’m trying to figure out if they’re different from moose tracks but haven’t googled it yet). on a scale of ice cream itself, if you go to Costco and order a twist cone, those are really good. they’re not on the menu (the sign says vanilla and chocolate) but if you can see the ice cream machine and it has a handle in between the chocolate and vanilla, they can make it). twist cones mean half vanilla and half chocolate! the best of both worlds.

15. How often do you read?

i read mostly fanfiction nowadays, but i read quite a bit of it. i chug through more than i keep track of- i’ll go check my bookmarks from last week. it depends on different things though. if i’m just looking through a fandom i’ll read more, but i prefer to read a few really good works from authors i like a lot. i tend to set those aside for when i have time to really get absorbed in them and write a review. ((okay i just scrolled through my bookmarks and i read 42 in the last week, which is definitely more than expected but i hopped into a new fandom (detroit become human) and there’s a lot of new, really cool stuff and original ideas and i think i stayed up really really late one night, like up to four am listening to a playthrough and binge reading fic. i blame that for the crazy high amount of fanfiction. and that was just the stuff i bookmarked, oh god. i read so much fucking fanfiction. holy shit.))

i study best in school during the actual class, but i generally study at home on my bed.

uh... way more than I thought I would but that's mostly bc I go through cheap floppy sneakers for work like I go through bottles of water and then I don't immediately throw them away. 2 pairs of boots, 1 pair of nice fancy shoes, 1 pair of nice sneakers, 1 pair of fucked up sneakers for work, 1 pair of painted shoes, 1 pair I PREPARE for painting, several pairs of flip flops... so let's say... 8+, 3 of which I wear regularly and half of which are broken lol

I don't remember...? The last one I do remember was a pretty backhanded one.

5.) Music taste?

Extremely varied! Among my favourite music is a lot of instrumental/orchestral soundtracks, especially with traditional old-fashioned instruments and lots of percussion and rhythm is always a bonus. I like full orchestras but I also like music that is extremely barebones and simple with just a voice and/or one instrument. I like music that's sort of unpredictable and quirky and takes a while to get to know and is full of surprises and doesn't just repeat a normal pattern over and over. I like music that repeats patterns but builds on them and varies them! I like music with attention to lyrics, I like music with sound/lyric mood dissonance. I like upbeat energetic music, I like extremely dark music at times.

chicken, fish...I like tender meat a lot OTL, curries, eggs, fruit-wise I love oranges and tangerines, bananas, cherries and (not water-)melon. On the sweets front it's chocolate/cake/cookies/ice cream only.

Uncarbonated cool water, infused is also okay. Tea. LASSI. Sometimes soda but if it isn't either a coke/orange or coke/cherry mix I'll probably not like it much.

spring: the colours and life and light and birds returning, easter! FLOWER SCENTS EVERYWHERE summer: LONG DAYS so lots of activity! OUTDOOR SWIMMING! Thunderstorms! walking barefoot, the ground being mostly dry and everything just drying very quickly. autumn: ...colourful leaves? Federweißer (a local type of sweet wine). Storms? winter: SNOW! ICE! Cold crisp air and skies! Just the way winter air feels. If it gets cold enough I can actually use thick fluffy blankets and soft warm clothing without overheating immediately. The super short days and long nights warranting lots of small cozy little lights everywhere, especially combined with snowy nights it's so gorgeous.

Pistacchio and Stracciatella are my childhood friends and loves, but I will eat pretty much everything! Yoghurt-y and creamy/milky/nut-flavours are good too.

a lot of boring but useful and versatile dark colours (black, grey, brown, blue, red), mixed up with some grey-ish blues, purples... and then there's bright yellows and teals for summer and rich browns and reds for winter. Some not-too bright reddish pink is in there too. I wish I could find more blueish purple! Or green, but the ones I find are either teal or just really drab. I don't think there's much of a colour style or theme to my wardrobe really.

24.) Tea or coffee?  

I prefer to drink tea but boy does coffee smell good.

25.) Favorite clothing item?

my big old floppy Aladdin pants. And my green-blue-yellow bikini.

26.) Dream bedroom?

lots of wood and warm natural white/yellow/brown colours, a raised bed with an overhead window for star/skygazing (which I can close if I don't feel like it and have some cute little star-lights on the blinds instead)! A big window with a huge windowsill on which I can sit and enjoy the air and view (hopefully out into nature)!

27.) Best childhood TV shows?

I watched a TON of TV but forgot most of the show's names. I loved the animated Duck Tales TV series and was really fond of the Ai Wakakusa Monogatari series (Tales of Little Women?) and its sequel too! Also, TMNT lol.

I often wear a gemstone around my neck but there's not constant.

Dream trip: I did it a few weeks ago! I flew to Los Angeles, California, then to Las Vegas, Nevada to see Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders in concert. Then I went on a 2 day road trip across Arizona via Route 66, stopped off at the Grand Canyon then stayed overnight at a motel, then drove back to Las Vegas where I went to see an exhibition about The Titanic and a shark reef aquarium where I got to stroke sting rays which was random but pretty cool. I also went to Hoover Dam. 


Dream job: Not sure just yet, something to do with culture/the humanities. Possibly a Religious Studies/Philosophy teacher, but I’d also love to do something that involves travelling the world. I don’t think I want to do one job for the rest of my life, I can’t be tied down like that. I need change and variety. We’ll see.
