summary: it’s playoff season not get-back-with-your-ex season; a continuation of if he wanted to he would
warnings: jackson and fighting
word count: 1.8k
the game was going fairly well so far. the boys were playing well, all of them, especially luca. he had an assist in the first period, which you were extremely proud of. now, it was the beginning of the second period, and the boys were working hard to keep the momentum going. your friend, maggie, did not seem to get that message. “can we go grab a popcorn please? i’m starving,” she begged, tugging softly on luca’s hockey sweatshirt which he begged you to wear. when he pulled out the pout and puppy dog eyes, there was no denying him.
you looked at maggie, a hint of annoyance on your face. “really mag?” “please y/n! i cam to this stupid game for you and luca, who can’t take a hint by the way! i mean really? making out in the dorm room yesterday? you could have at least warned me!” she said. you blushed at her words, cringing in embarrassment from the loudness of her words. “okay fine. let’s go,” you agreed, standing up from your seat to follow her to the concessions. as you were leaving you made eye contact with luca, who was sitting on the bench, awaiting his next shift. he furrowed his eyebrows at you, silently asking where you were going. you mouthed the word ‘popcorn’ and pointed to maggie. he smiled, causing you to unconsciously smile too, and nodded his head.
your relationship with luca was nothing like the one you had with jackson. luca prioritized you. he took the time to consider your feelings and overall worked hard to balance his already busy life with your relationship. at the same time, you made sure to ensure that he knew how much you appreciate him. whether that was helping him study for a test, treating him to dinner (when he let you), or coming to his games, you wanted luca to know that you loved him as much as he loved you. so, when he invited you to his game tonight, the answer was an obvious yes.
“do you want something?” maggie asked, drawing you out of your thoughts and back to reality. “no i’m good,” you replied, your foot tapping anxiously on the floor of yost. maggie rolled her eyes. “will you relax please? if something happened we’d hear it,” she said, tapping her card against the small square as the guy handed her a large popcorn. you nodded in agreement, following maggie back to your seats.
“oh my fuck,” she mumbled, stopping slightly before your row. “what?” you asked, looking past her. the sight in front of you caused your heart to drop. jackson and a group of his friends were sitting in the, previously unoccupied, seats next to yours. maggie looks at you, waiting to see what you want to do before making a move. you take a deep breath, squaring your shoulders, and walk towards your seats. you take your seat, the one conveniently located next to one of jackson’s buddies. you refuse to make eye contact with them, or even give them the time of day. instead, your eyes remain intently focused on the ice, where luca was setting up for a defensive play. there’s some shuffling going on next to you, but again, you ignore it. that is until someone’s arm is draped across your shoulders.
you turn to glare at the boy, coming face to face with jackson.
“what’s going on babe?” he asks, a cocky smirk on his face. you scoff, shrugging his arm off your shoulders, but you don’t give him a verbal response. jackson nods, giving you a once over. “you still with that pussy fantilli?” he continues, trying to get a rise out of you. “don’t call him that,” you snap, briefly meeting his eyes. jackson smiles, happy that he got you to say something. “what’s the matter? you don’t like it when i say something about your little boy toy. you cheating on him too?” jackson taunted. you shut your eyes, taking a deep shallow breath to stop yourself from doing something you’d regret later. “i’m not engaging,” you said, turning to maggie for a handful of popcorn. “then why’d you say something to begin with?” “i’m disengaging,” you replied, staring straight ahead. jackson huffed, clearly annoyed, but he gave up on trying to talk to you after that.
until the kiss cam.
you hated the kiss cam. every game, without fail during the break between the second and third period, the kiss cam took over the jumbotron. normally, it wasn’t a problem. but then again, most times you weren’t sitting next to your ex boyfriend. now this shouldn’t have been a problem, but you and luca were fairly private about your relationship. you guys were public, but not to the extent that the whole campus would know about your status as a couple. whoever was running the kiss cam tonight must have been one of those people because they put the spotlight right on you and jackson.
you vigorously shook your head no, refusing to even look at your ex boyfriend. “it’s just the kiss cam. don’t be a buzz kill,” he mumbled, moving his face towards yours. without thinking, you slapped him across the face. the sound echoed throughout your section of the stands, people stopping to watch what was going on. “don’t fucking touch me,” you shouted, glaring at him while he held on to his now red cheek. as you and maggie were standing up, getting ready to leave, jackson’s hand grabbed your wrist. he leaned in close, about to say something, but he never got the chance.
“get your hands off my fucking girlfriend!” luca screamed, banging on the glass. he looked furious. his skin was flushed red and his eyes held a murderous look to them. jackson, startled by luca’s outburst, pulled back, releasing your hand immediately. without a second thought, not even taking the time to look at luca, you and maggie hustled down the steps and out the front door of yost.
as the two of you scrambled to her car, you found yourself constantly looking over your shoulder. finally, just as your hand gripped the navy blue handle, maggie spoke: “relax y/n/n. there’s no one here.” her voice was gentle and soothing. it was exactly what you needed right now. the paranoia of seeing jackson, of having him put his hands on you, was settling in. you needed someone to ground you, keeping you focused on the present rather than the past. “let’s get in the car and listen to the game on the radio,” she instructed, waiting for you to open your door and slide into the passenger seat before climbing behind the wheel.
together, the two of you listened to the remainder of the game from the car, including the overtime michigan win. “do you want to go? if we leave now we’ll be gone by the time everybody else comes out,” maggie asks, looking over at you. you bite your lip, taking a glance at the ice arena behind you. “i don’t know. i really want to see luca,” you explain. she nods, waiting patiently for you to continue. “can we just stay here? i’ll text luca and tell him where we’re parked so he can meet me,” you continue. “yeah no problem,” maggie agrees, watching as you take out your phone to contact your boyfriend. he responds instantly, saying that he’ll meet you at maggie’s car to take you home.
about twenty minutes late, seamus casey, another freshman on the team, is knocking on the passenger window. “seamus? you okay?” you ask, looking at the frantic hockey player. “me? i’m fine, but luca isn’t,” he rambles, nervously looking around the parking lot. “what happened?” you ask, grabbing your phone and other belongings so you can get out of maggie’s car. seamus swallows before answering, “he saw jackson.” you hesitate for a moment, your hand stopping before opening the car door. “i know you don’t want to see him, but he’s two steps away from getting kicked off the team y/n,” seamus says. “move,” you instruct, and he steps out of the way, allowing you to exit the car. “i’ll be right here if you need me,” maggie insists and you thank her before following seamus into yost.
“we tried to stop him, i swear, but jackson has such a mouth on him,” seamus explains, leading you down the halls. “tell me about it,” you mumble, rushing to keep up with the boy. finally, the two of you came to a large crowd gathered in the hallway. seamus grabbed your hand, weaving you between the group of people. “you put your hands on my girlfriend! do you really think i’m going to let that slide?” you hear luca shout as seamus reaches the front of the crowd. you make eye contact with adam, who was standing across the circle from you.
“and she cheated on me with you! did you think i was going to let that slide?” jackson countered, walk up to luca, pushing a finger into his chest. luca opened his mouth to respond, but you stepped in before he could answer. “enough! he’s not worth it. let’s just go,” you said, whispering the last bit so only luca could hear. when he doesn’t budge you tug on his suit jacket, finally getting to meet his green eyes. “c’mon,” you say, gesturing towards the door with your head. luca takes one more look at jackson before nodding. he intertwined his fingers with yours as the two of you stepped away from the crowd. “hey fantilli, before you go, how is it to have my leftovers hmm?” jackson shouts.
you both freeze. before you can even comprehend the situation, you drop luca’s hand and march over to jackson. “how about you shut the fuck up? you’re such a dick. you never loved me. you treated me like shit. and since you brought up cheating, let’s talk about yours. yeah which girl was it again that had the boyfriend in alpha phi? oh yeah brittany? and he beat your ass too. just go home jackson, you’re pathetic honestly,” you rant. the whole place is silent, everyone watching you. luca’s hand slips into yours, pulling you away from the crowd. but before you leave, you have to throw just one more dig: “oh and by the way, he’s better than you ever were!” jackson steps forward, as if he’s about to come for you, but adam and nolan block his path, easily allowing you and luca to slip out the back door.
outside, with the fresh air chilling your cheeks, you stop to look at luca. “i’m sorry. that was mean,” you announce, looking at him. “babe what? that was bad ass. he deserved it anyways,” luca assures, lifting your still conjoined hands to his lips, where he kisses the back of yours. you laugh at his words, feeling lighter all of a sudden. “that did feel kind of good actually,” you say shyly. “i’m glad. you deserve to be happy,” he says. “i am happy. with you,” you reply kissing his cheek softly.

a wrap-up (ha!) of my new hockey experience
i’ve played (field) hockey for more than 10 years but i just started playing ice hockey and thought i’d write some of the stuff down. basically a group at my uni were looking for people interested and i joined up knowing NOTHING about ice hockey except Knife Shoes. but in summary: im now four different hockey players in a hoodie (indoor, field-field, field-goalie, ice ice baby)
(before anyone asks, yes, this was highly motivated by a recent reread of check please, but turns out ice hockey is heaps fun). rest under a cut to save your dashboards because i know that most people on my dash don’t care about (penumbra voice) spORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS!
the good:
you’re allowed to use backstick? WILD
also you’re allowed to stick check!! what the hell!!! one of the guys at off-ice grabbed the puck off me w what in field would be an ILLEGAL stick check and i was like “ok stop. hang on. i need some clarification. are you allowed to do [stick checks/obstruction/tackling from behind/swing tackles]” “yes” “there are no rules and i am UNSTOPPABLE” *immediately steals the puck back from him*
like two months of Actual Ice Hockey Training Weekly and starting from “can go forwards turn-ish and do hockey stops on one side sometimes” my skating skills are while not top noch, Muchly Improved. i can now do crossovers forwards and backwards in both directions, hockey stop both ways, and i know OF mohawks though they still elude me
having your own skates means edges actually..... exist. wild. i’d used hire skates all my life and got on the ice w my new ones and i was like. Oh. This Is It. Can Never Go Back Now.
wax for stick wrapping smells Good Actually. kind of want to. chomp it. (Forbidden.)
women are just. heaps allowed to play in the men’s league in my city w no issues so! if i end up medically transitioning i wouldn’t have to jump through hoops about it unlike field where i guess i’d have to start playing for the men’s club (which is a Separate Club to my current one and is from what i’ve seen super disorganised.)
was able to answer not one but TWO ice hockey-related questions at field trivia night. (admittedly one was a wild guess and resulted in me just going through all the NHL team names i knew until i went “i think that one sounds right”)
swapping which hand goes on top of the stick means that i can just do backstick stuff without my brain going “NO!!! THAT’S WRONG!!!!” which is a real good brainhack
i now exist in a weird position in the omgcp fandom where i have PLAYED and therefore have at least some experience to draw on wrt THAT but still very little idea of anything involving like actual NHL-related stuff (oh god does this make me bitty?)
the bad
oof ouch ow my LEGS
god that’s so much money. so fucking much money. i have a full kit of ice hockey stuff but god at what costs
(i know the costs. at least 900 plus travel expenses. cost of playing a comparatively niche sport that requires a lot of gear i guess)
so. much. cardio. why offside. there’s no offside in field. (don’t @ me i know why there’s offside in ice. i just hate it.)
im still not sure about whether “shoots right-handed” means you have a “right-handed stick” or if it’s like. the opposite. idk idc my left hand is on top bc otherwise i’ll start importing nonsense into my field game
[pokes bruises] how did THAT get there
no one told me how long shifts were meant to be in my first game so i was on the ice for like. a full five minutes. d e a d. (although my only point of reference was field hockey and again. that’s like. five-ten maybe fifteen before you get a sub.)
still don’t have a jersey because shipping to australia costs like. $50 extra? why this (still need to get one tho)
we’re probs not going to get any more games until next semester and tryouts for actual teams aren’t until like. october. h h h. gotta make do w pickup training till then
having a different hand on top of the stick means i have to relearn how to shoot. i want to be able to do these wrist shots people keep talking about. i can barely flick in outdoor anyway but. c’mon. wanna be able to pass strong.
the probably unnecessary but worth mentioning
i’ve been using my goalie smock as a jersey and look. it works. (bonus: it now smells kind of like the ice rather than just. goalie stank.)
have started wrapping bits of my field stick with hockey tape (and i hear you all booing but look. it’s an old stick i’ve had for about 7 years and it cost $40 bc i got it in the middle of the season and also it’s wood which i did not realise when i bought it but yeah the edges have started to shed a bit more than usual and while im not worried about it shattering like i was w my indoor stick because it’s wood it IS chipping at an increased rate and i literally just spent $30 on a new grip so i don’t want to get a new stick until next season at LEAST so. tape.)
most wild of the wild: my old indoor coach was at pickup training and i recognised her name bc it was kind of distinctive and she was like ‘how do you know that’ and i was like ‘i think you coached my indoor team when i was 12′
im trying to start fitness training for my field team and it is Not Working so far but i’m going to try.

The Long Con Part Five
Previous Part | Masterlist | Next Part Pairing: Marcus Pike x Reader Rating: T Notes: I hope y’all had a good week! 💕 Warnings: This is almost purely fluff. There’s some angst in there, but it’s just, like...A speck. And it’s covered over by fluff. Also I’ve never been to Austin, I did a lot of Googling for this bit, so if any of it is inaccurate, I’m sorry!! It seems like such a cool town and I don’t wanna do it a disservice! Lastly, I linked the museum and the art pieces mentioned in the chapter at the end of the chapter, under the tags. Summary: You’d stayed behind to get ready— but you didn’t know what exactly what you were be getting ready for.
Tumblr media
While you and Marcus would be helping Marnie and the family out with wedding prep during the week, they didn’t have anything in particular scheduled for that day. After he’d had his breakfast, Marcus had showered, gotten dressed, and left to get the car that he’d rented for two of you to use that week. You’d stayed behind to get ready— but you didn’t know what exactly what you were be getting ready for. “I wanna show you around while we’ve got some time,” Marcus had told you between stealing sips of your coffee (which were solely permitted because the two of you were pretending to be together - if this had been under any other circumstance, he would not have gotten away with a single sip. His parents had found it adorable. You had found it a loss of coffee).
You dressed in casual clothing, things that you knew you’d have no trouble walking around in for the day. Marcus honked twice once he was outside in the rental, and you bid quick goodbyes to his family.
-- “So,” Marcus glanced over at you from behind the dark lenses of his aviator sunglasses, “We have a few options-- well, we’ve got a ton, but, I was thinking we could take a tour of the Capitol building, and check out the Harry Ransom Center -- it’s this massive archive and library. There are a few places we could hit for lunch, and then… I don’t know, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center? And I thought we could finish with the Blanton Museum of Art?... Or is that, like, a no, since we’re both kinda around art all the time?” You watched him for a few moments, stunned. He’d clearly gone out of his way to think about what you’d like to do -- places that he knew and that you would like. He wanted you to have fun, and time out of the house - away from his family. Marcus was taking you out and about like… Like he probably would a real girlfriend. “That all sounds really awesome,” You admitted softly. Marcus grinned at you, and you settled back in your seat, facing forward again. -- Conversation came as easily as it had when you were in D.C. Marcus dropped the odd fact about Austin now and again (though it was nothing near his panicked post-flight info-dump), pointed out his old haunts, told you about his and Marnie’s childhoods. Even without his family around, you found that the two of you kept close. You reached for one another’s hands; Marcus drew you into his side when you were in crowded places; even when there was plenty of room, Marcus’ hand was on your shoulder, or your back. The contact was comforting; it didn’t feel forced.  You found yourselves strolling through the Blanton with your fingers intertwined, speaking in hushed tones so as not to disturb the patrons around you. It was where the two of you wound up spending most of your day, discussing Fogel’s Conflict and Kern’s The Adoration of the Magi and Dorigny’s Diana of the Hunt. When you drifted into the Klimt pieces on loan from the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, and the two of you stopped in front of The Kiss, Marcus cupped your chin and leaned down, pecking the corner of your lips. You couldn’t help the stupid grin that took over your face, and you leaned into him, turning your head and hiding your face in his shoulder.
He just curled an arm around you, smoothing a thumb along your side as you let your sheepishness run its course. You turned your head as it ebbed away, finally, taking in the intertwined lovers, robed in gold and adorned with flowers.
--
“Okay, this… Is stupidly cool,” You admitted, looking around. “I was a little worried that you were going to stop at ‘stupid’.” “No!” You laughed, “I’ve never been anywhere like this.” Marcus had brought you to a bar with an arcade in Southern Congress for dinner. The two of you had ordered dinner and were looking for a few games to play before the food arrived. “They’ve got a little bit of everything. Pinball, Pac-man, Tron, Skeeball,” Marcus listed off. “Galaga?” “They’ve got Galaga.” “Perfect.” Marcus was exceptional at Pac-man and pinball, but you learned that you had the upper hand when it came to air hockey. You managed to play two games of it (both of which you won) before the food came. “Today has all been insanely awesome,” You told him after you’d polished off your pizza, “Thank you. I mean-- Seriously, you didn’t have to do this.” “I didn’t want you feeling like we were stuck at my family’s place all week, and...I mean I know we’re down here for Marnie, but you said you’d never been to Austin. I didn’t want you to miss out on seeing the city.” You and Marcus shared a smile before he added, “The whole day has been insanely awesome, huh?” “Yeah.” “Even in the kitchen?” “You mean when you were drinking my coffee? ‘Cause that put you on thin ice, mister.” “Right before that,” He corrected. The smile he was giving you was two parts bashfulness and one part coy. You folded one arm on the table, pillowing your chin on your other hand. “...Yeah, I’d include that. As first kisses go, it was…” You nodded a little, eyeing Marcus from under your lashes, “It was very...Very nice.” “‘Very nice’?” Marcus repeated, “I guess that’s not the worst review I’ve ever gotten.” “Don’t get all huffy,” You chuckled, ”I mean it, it was… I forgot what being kissed like that even felt like.” “What do you mean?” “I mean that...Was my first kiss in two years.” “Two-- How is that possible?” Marcus’ brow furrowed. You rolled your eyes a little bit, glancing away from Marcus as embarrassment swirled in your stomach. “The last person was my ex-fiancé. After that fell apart…” You shrugged, “I haven’t dated since.” You felt Marcus lean a little closer to get a better look at you. “Did you give up on finding someone?” “Not on purpose. I think I just...Built up some walls that I had torn down really quickly with them. And I built those walls up double. I prioritized work-- the devil I knew, you know.” “No dates, nothing?” “Nope.” “How many people did you turn down?” “What makes you think I turned anyone down?” Marcus tipped his head to the side, giving you a slight once-over as he muttered, “C’mon.” You shook your head, letting out a quiet, embarrassed laugh. “Well, how long after your engagement broke did you wait to date?” You asked. Marcus’ lips pressed into a thin, contemplative line before he admitted, “Five months.” “What made you get back out there? I mean… How’d you know you were ready?” “I wasn’t, but I was worried that if I waited until I was, the woman that had asked me out wouldn’t be available when I got there. I took a leap. It wasn’t a good leap, but it was a leap,” he chuckled, “And it made me remember that dating can suck and putting myself out there could be scary, but… Ultimately, it’s worth it.” You and Marcus regarded one another quietly for a moment. You couldn't even imagine what he was thinking. You couldn't understand how he was still so open to finding love when he'd been hurt the way he had. That sort of loss had only made you want to recede; it seemed to make Marcus even more determined to find love. Frankly, it was a wonder that he hadn't yet— he was the kindest man you'd ever met. You lowered your eyes to your empty plate as you realized that you were staring. It was easy to get caught up in his warm eyes; you’d found it happening more often lately, and it certainly suited the purposes of the lie you were playing up around his family. But there was something about all of it— his gaze, his smile, everything that the two of you had done today — it stirred up twinges or remorse. Lately you’d found yourself wondering if there ever could’ve been something real between the two of you, if you’d met under different circumstances. That was a very dangerous line of thought.
“If you’re finished with your food, we can go play some more air hockey.” You smiled at the offer, glancing back up at him as you asked, “I didn’t kick your ass enough the first time?” “Oh-- I was just warming up.” “Clocking all of my moves?” “Exactly.” “We’ll see about that.” (You beat him three more times.) (You let him win once.)
--
You flicked off the light before getting into bed, tucking yourself in beside Marcus. He yawned and mumbled, “G’night.” “Goodnight, what?” Marcus let out an exaggerated sigh, “Goodnight, supreme air hockey winner.” “Thank you.” “Mhm.” “I don’t ask for much.” “I know.” “Just that you steer clear of my coffee—” “Uh huh.” “And address me by my proper title.” You glanced over as you felt Marcus shift in the bed. Your breath caught in your throat as his arm wound around your middle, his hand dangling against your side as he rested his forehead against your shoulder. “Sleep,” He urged in a mumble, “Oh supreme one.” You settled down, resting one of your hands atop Marcus’ arm. It was a warm, comforting weight; a sweet touch that you could, if you weren’t careful, find yourself getting used to. “‘Oh supreme one’,” You repeated quietly, peering up at the ceiling, “I could get used to that.” Tag list: @hufflepuffing-all-day-long ; @spideysimpossiblegirl ; @blueeyesatnight ; @elen-aranel ; @yespolkadotkitty ; @artsymaddie ; @phoenixhalliwell ; @lunaserenade ; @winniedaboo  ; @empress-palpat1ne ; @randomness501 ; @nutmeg-20 ; @leonieb ; @the-feckless-wonder ; @lou-la-lou ; @captain-jebi ; @supernaturalgirl ; @naturenebula21 ; @evelynseventyr ; @giselatropicana ; @heatherbel ; @marydjarin ; @annathewitch ; @absurdthirst ; @hnt-escape ; @writingletterstothefire ; @misswriter ; @bison-writes

rotbtd tag game
i was tagged by @hobie-brown :D
this could get long...
name/nickname? mags! my favourite one atm is magatron
how did you get into rotbtd? saw some fanart on google images while i was perusing through the httyd fanart as a ten year old and never looked back. deviant art and youtue amvs became my vices after that.
what made you stay/come back? httyd 3 actually! even though it's my least favourite of the trilogy, it made me so nostalgic for rotbtd. also the content now is so much better than it used to be imo.
out of the four movies, which one is your favourite? httyd1 definitely. i think its the most well written and constructed (tangled is a close second) and the soundtrack is amazing. while i think brave and rotg aren't as narratively strong, they have the same heart and loveable characters as the other two. tbh, i thoroughly enjoy watching all of them
dreamworks dragons or rapunzel’s tangled adventure? i ADORED rob and dob and i used to watch it episode by episode on abc3, but i haven't gotten around to watching all of rtte yet. tbh...i don't like the characterisation in rtte very much, something just feels off about it. character and plot wise, i don't have anything against rapunzel's tangled adventure, but some of it gets boring and repetitive after a while. this is a long winded way of saying i prefer dreamwork's dragons, but just rob and dob ig.
which one do you prefer to be made a sequel of, brave or rise of the guardians? like @hobie-brown said, disney should not be trusted with merida or any of her family. that being said! a rotg sequel would be a dream come true!! there's so much lore and world building that needs to be explored!! i have so many questions. how did the other guardians die? they mentioned the groundhog, are there other spirits?? are there different ones from other cultures?? and obviously there's will joyce's series to take inspiration from as well. imo, a series would work better to explore everything. (also give me a pitch black redemption arc. i LIVE for the villain-turned-awkward-relative trope)
otp/brotp(s)? my otp is hiccstrid and i think eugene and rapunzel is one of disney's most solid romances so there's that. jarida!! my beloved!! tbh, i was indifferent to jarida until like three months ago but now i cannot stop thinking abt them. in terms of brotps? all of them. literally any. the best thing abt the rotbtd revival is the lack of ship wars and the realisation that all of them have wonderful and distinct chemistry between any other member of the group.
favourite characters? httyd and brave were my gateways into this fandom, so i guess hiccup and merida?? but i actively kin rapunzel and jack has so many unexplored character traits beyond Ice Themed Bad Boy That Pulls Pranks. idk man, don't make me pick.
favourite au(s)? BAND AU. OMG i LOVE BAND AUs. @risoris made an awesome band au and a fic to go with it and i think i cried when i saw it. some of my other favourites are: office aus, superhero aus or camp counsellors aus (which @ven-finn has drawn art for ;))
pick one! favourite b4 house placement in hogwarts au? im not as into hp as i was before bc of reasons but my headcanons for house placements are: hiccup - ravenclaw, rapunzel - gryffindor, merida - slytherin, jack - hufflepuff
pick one! since this is 2021, any hot takes you want to give us? | what old fanon tropes that you still enjoyed to this day? hm. i think old fanon tropes were frustratingly heteronormative and surface-level. some hot takes... umm
when merida's old and her kingdom's passed onto her brothers or her heir (if she has one), her retirement plan is to go live in the woods and become the resident cryptid.
any aus that take away hiccup's disability is yuck.
i mentioned this in an earlier question, but jack has SO MUCH character beyond the basic bad boy arcetype everyone placed him in during early fandom. like, the boy needs therapy but not in the way wattpad boys need therapy y'know?
in general, i think old fandom lacked a lot of nuance when it came to the characters, especially when they were all together so im glad that's starting to change!
in a modern au, raps would DEFINITELY be on art tiktok. like those mirror painting trends and the cottagecore aesthetics remind me so much of her.
everyone thought that jack would play hockey bc he's ice themed and everything, when in fact 1) he uses his staff much more like a lacrosse stick than a hockey stick and 2) you think that twink isnt the resident smart ass who makes fun of the sports people at the risk of being punched in the face?
any fic recs? or if you couldn't think of any, what was the last rotbtd fanfiction that you read? the last one i think i read was @risoris 's 'Like A Fist In The Eye' which is a jarida soulmates au but with a twist that they hate eachother. it's only got one chapter and they haven't met yet, but im in love with it. a few i'd recommend are:
we cannot be friends (cannot pretend it makes sense) which is a platonic merida and hiccup fic with added hiccstrid and lesbian merida
Jack Frost and the Shadows of Van der Bor which is a jarida hogwarts fic!
im tagging @risoris and @therearedragonsindunbroch if they haven't already seen/done this!

First Lines of Last 20
Saw this going around and it looks like fun so: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20,  just list them all.) Choose your favorite opening line, tag some friends!
i just wanna be (a part of you), Brady/Matt (a/b/o, sibling incest, Neckz 'N Throatz au): Matt doesn’t tell anyone before the fact.
He knows a lot of people are going to see it: Neckz 'N Throatz is a porn mag, sure, but it's also an institution in a lot of ways and everyone he knows has seen at least one issue of it.
take my hand, Brendan Lemieux, background Brady/Matt (bdsm au, background sibling incest): Brendan knows that look, understands the glint in Tkachuk's eye; he's played against Matthew before, knows he's a sub and that he's been collared since he was a rookie, but Brendan's never given much thought to the kind of sub Matthew was, how alike they might be in some things.
But now playing against his younger brother and seeing a familiar smirk twist his lips, Brendan thinks they might be more like each other than not.
hold me tight, Dylan Cozens/Ryan Johnson (getting together, wjc shenanigans): Dylan opens the door in a faded pair of sweats, barefoot and shirtless, and it takes Ryan a few seconds to get his brain back online; he knows Dylan's huge, knows how tall and built he is, but it's like his brain forgets that Dylan is exactly his type and every time he sees him in person it's like a fresh jolt to his system.
“Ryan,” Dylan says with a bright smile and pulls him in for a hug; Ryan hugs him back and absolutely doesn't think about the fact that Dylan could probably manhandle him any time - any way - he wants to.
just to feel you, Brady/Matt (sibling incest, a/b/o, heat fic): Brady knows it’s going to be him and Matt.
They still fight like cats and dogs, as eager to use their fists on each other now as when they were kids, but there's an edge to it recently that wasn't there before, something that makes Brady want to pin Matt to the floor and take him apart, bite by bite.
just like oxygen, Jack/Connor (werewolf au, graphic violence, courting rituals): Jack's fourteen the first time he meets Connor.
It's at the U16s, both of them the youngest players on their respective teams and both convinced they were the best players on the ice.
i love the way you hurt me, Brady/Matt (sibling incest, werewolf au, graphic depictions of violence, courting rituals): Courting probably wouldn't have been such a big deal for any of the wolves Matt played with growing up if it wasn't for Eichs and Davo.
From the first time Davo laid a dead bear on the patio of Eichs billet's in Detroit until he presented Eichs with Murray's head at center ice during the final game of the world cup, every wolf Matt knows had paid rapt attention, endlessly fascinated by the story unfolding in front of them.
nobody loves you (like i do), Brady/Matt (sibling incest, bdsm au, sadism, masochism): The thing is Matt doesn’t consider himself romantic or anything like that. He loves Brady: as his dom, as his brother, as his boyfriend, and yeah, he needs him in the same ways, but those are just facts to him.
They’re feelings, too, of course they are, but Matt is as sure of them as he is the sky’s blue and hockey is the best sport: irrefutable facts that shape every day of his life.
beginnings in death, Jack/Connor (in death au, first meeting, pre-relationship): The first time he sees Connor is at a funeral.
Jack's there mostly for Noah's sake; they go back a long way, just two street rats who somehow dragged themselves from the back streets of Boston to New York City and become successful along the way. He would rather spend his time finding who did this, but Noah needed the closure and he needed support so Jack stayed.
charlie, Charlie/Brandon (godlings au, alternate universe - Greek mythology): Charlie doesn't remember anyone ever explaining what death, or the afterlife was to him.
He's pretty sure he was born with the knowledge in his bones.
got you under my skin, Jack Hughes/Quinn Hughes (sibling incest, a/b/o): Everyone in their immediate family are betas, even their cousins, so it's something of a shock when Jack finds out Quinn's an alpha.
They're playing ball hockey in Chucky's driveway and Matty's back from Calgary for the summer so they're playing two-on-two; it's not a particularly intense game, just some friendly chirping and half-hearted shooting.
in between, Jack/Connor (godlings au, homophobic language): The locker room afterwards is quiet in spite of winning and Connor knows part of it is his own bad mood bleeding over to the rest of the team, but he can't bring himself to care as much as he should.
not a day goes by, Brock Boesar/Elias Pettersson (a/b/o, non-traditional a/b/o dynamics, frottage): Brock is just so pretty, it's hard for Elias to concentrate when he's around.
He wants to buy Brock new suits, ones with some color and a good cut that would make him look even better than he already does. Take him out to dinner, spoil him so he knows how much Elias wants him.
He's never looked at an alpha and thought mine. Never wondered how one would look with his collar around their neck.
all your fevered dreams, Brady/Matt (sibling incest, hellhounds, sirens): Most preternaturals don’t recognize Matt’s scent right away.
The ocean part of it is simple: all sirens smell like saltwater, even if they’re not born at sea the way their ancestors were. It’s the brimstone that makes wolves and other shifters wrinkle their noses in confusion and lean in closer to get a stronger smell, like their noses lied to them the first time.
eyes closed, fingers crossed (i swear), Sam Girard/Erik Johnson, background relationship (bdsm au, spanking, kneeling): It’s just a quiet moment between the two of them, after a bad game. Sam pulls him closer, makes sure he’s surrounded so all Erik can see is Sam, makes sure Erik is only focused on him before he tells him that the loss isn’t his fault.
Erik knows he wasn’t playing his best hockey, but he breathes in Sam’s scent, listens to his voice and lets go of the loss faster than he normally would.
those words, that kiss, Patrik Laine/Nik Ehlers (werewolf au, a/b/o, heat fic): The first thing Patrik notices about Nik is his scent: it’s light and airy, almost, the bright scent of oranges and some kind of flower scent that drives Patrik crazy because he can’t place it; it’s not until halfway through his rookie year, when they’re in Florida for a roadie, that he catches it in the middle of a store and has to follow it until they’re in the middle of the gardening department and he’s asking a bemused worker what flower is in the trays by the register.
feel good (on my lips), Dylan Strome/Ryan Strome (sibling incest, a/b/o, heat fic): Ryan knows his parents aren't getting back together, they split when he was still in mites and considering how badly they used to fight, it was a decision that was met with relief on his part, so he's never secretly hoped for a reunion or anything like that.
It's still a surprise when his dad tells him that he's dating someone new, a female beta from his company who is also divorced and with a son a couple years younger than Ryan is; he's happy for his dad, though, and agrees to stay at his place during winter break to meet them.
just swimming in our sins, Brady/Matt (sibling incest, accodental dick pics, panty kink): Matt gets the snapchat notification as he's getting ready for bed and his phone goes off almost immediately after.
"Don't open that," Brady tells him in a loud whisper, his voice weirdly echoey; Matt goes over Brady's schedule in his head and remembers he's in Florida this weekend. "I sent it to you by accident because I can't see shit in this fucking bathroom."
sweat drips (love sticks), Brady/Matt (bdsm au, sibling incest, masochism, sadism): Matt knows the kind of sub he is and he's always been ok with it.
There's worse things for a hockey player who happens to also be a sub to be than a masochist; at the very least he always has a bruise to press when he's jerking off, aches and pains that he can pretend someone put on his skin during a scene if he wants to. Usually he doesn't.
strike us like a match, Brady/Matt (sibling incest, sentinel and guides are known, canon typical violence): They've always been close, closer than most siblings Matt knows: Brady's always been protective of him, even when they were younger and Brady was smaller than him; he's selfish about Matt's attention, always wanting Matt to pay attention to him and only him.
There's never been a time where Matt hasn't wanted Brady with him, even when they fight Brady's always the one Matt wants to be around.
*
So now, my fave 🤔🤔🤔 I think probably it's love the way you hurt me because it's a good intro for the entire series as well as the fic itself.

I’m so mad at myself! I meant to send you a good morning post but I totally fell asleep before I could send it last night. I’ll try again. I want to know who your favorite hockey player is and who you enjoy writing for the most! -Mags
Hi @thebookofmags!! That definitely sounds like something I would do too hah 😂
Oh god that is such a tough question. I’ve been lucky enough to travel over to North America quite a few times now to watch ice hockey games - 3 games each in Dallas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Calgary and Denver - and I’ve seen so many of my favourite players (both on those teams and the ones they played against!), and I have to say, I’ve never seen anything like Nathan MacKinnon’s speed and skill. He was amazing. I can’t narrow it down any more than that though!! I love too many of them haha.
For writing though, I’m a sucker for Tyson Barrie, Erik Johnson and Jamie Oleksiak - those sweetheart fridges! (and TBear has my heart lol). How about you?

Somewhere in Stockholm- Chapter 1
Somewhere in Stockholm- Chapter 1
William Nylander
Summary: Maggie gets stuck in Stockholm during the eurovision song contest and she somehow ends up staying with her best friends teammate William Nylander.
Word Count:
Notes: This is the first story I have put on here so please go easy on me however any criticism is welcome! This is probably going to be in a least three parts maybe. This was inspired by my favourite singer George Ezra. I’ve included a link to the full story and the song that George Ezra wrote from the story. Honestly it’s pretty funny I’d recommend checking it out. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llmvnEq2g3s
Chapter 1
Maggie had been solo travelling around Europe for the last two week. She had seen so much on such a short trip from America and honestly didn’t want to go back next week.
Today Maggie had arrived in Stockholm. Somewhere she had been so excited to visit for weeks unfortunately for her, she had chosen to visit the exact wrong day. As today was the Eurovision song contest final. Which from what she had learnt through an enthusiastic Swedish lady on the train was a singing contest where every country in Europe and for some reason Australia take part in. The acts were all weird and wonderful. The lady on the train had shown her some videos of previous years which included dancing grannies and a heavy metal band dressed as weird creatures. it seemed the more outlandish the better. Then the countries vote for each other and the country with the most points at the end of the contest wins. Last year Sweden had won meaning the contest was being held in Stockholm this year.
What she wasn’t expecting when she turned up to her hotel was the receptionist telling her that
her room had been double booked and the hotel had no more hotel rooms left. “Fine, I guess I’ll have to find a different hotel to stay in,”
“That won’t be possible madam, you see the whole city is booked up for the weekend because,” “Of the song contest of course,” she finished huffing. He said giving her a sympathetic smile.
“Oh great, what am I meant to do?” she asked sarcastically. The receptionist just shrugged at her calling the next customer up to the counter.
Maggie sat at the train station. Wondering what in the world she was going to do now. Her train ticket wasn’t valid until tomorrow, she couldn’t afford to pay for a new train ticket. She sat on her suitcase in train station, her fingers dialling her best friends number. She wasn’t even sure what time it would be in Toronto right now, but she just needed to hear a friendly voice and Morgan was always full of good ideas. “Mo,” Maggie said suddenly bursting into tears.
“Mags are you ok? What’s going on are you hurt where are you?” he asked
“I’m ok , I just don’t know what to do, I just got to Stockholm and the hotel I was meant to be staying at is double booked and every hotel in the city is fully booked because of some stupid competition going on,” she wailed.
“It’s ok, let me help you ok? Stay calm so every hotel and hostel is booked?”
“Yep, I can’t afford a ticket to get me out of the city tonight either,”
“Your in Stockholm, Sweden?”
“Yep,”
“Okay, I have an idea, let me call you back in a couple of minutes I just have to call a friend, where are you now?”
“The train station,”
“Ok find a cafe to sit in get something to eat get yourself a nice coffee and i’ll call you back in as soon as I can, can you do that for me?” he asked slowly like he was talking to his grandma or a child. “Mmhh” was all she managed.
Maggie sat on her suitcase. Wondering what on earth Morgan could do from the other side of the world, she doubted his somewhat hockey celebrity status ventured as far as Stockholm although I guess you never know. Maggie and Morgan had been friends since school. It had been a running joke that Mo had even named the family dog after her. He still denied it. Morgan acted as Maggie’s big brother. Her parents used to wind her up that they were going to end up together but the pair never saw each other like that. They had had a conversation about that once when they were teenagers. They had tried and experimented with a kissed but they both agreed they didn’t feel it and they were better off friends. Even though Morgan now lived in Toronto and Maggie in Seattle, they kept in touch regularly and saw each other at least once a year, which was it was normally in the hockey off season and when Maggie could take some time off work. Maggie was still mad she hadn’t been able to see Morgan play. But Seattle hadn’t got a team yet and she couldn’t afford to fly back to Vancouver for Canucks vs Leafs game. She had only just saved up enough for this trip. After wandering around for a few minutes she finally found a coffee shop around the corner from the station. She ordered some kind of pastry and a coffee for herself and sat down in the table to reconsider her option. All of a sudden. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. “Morgan calling”
“Hey are you ok?” he asked she could hear the concern in his voice. Big brother Mo as always.
“Yeah I’m sat in some cafe now feeling a little better,”
“Good, So its turns out my teammate and his brother are in Stockholm, they have a place out there and Willy said you can crash at his”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes,”
“Oh Mo you are a lifesaver,”
“What are friend for?” he sighed
“I’ll buy you the biggest tub of ice cream next time I’m in back in the city,” she squealed.
“I mean you need to thank Willy not me but I won’t say no to ice cream,”
“You have the biggest sweet tooth of anyone I know Mo,”
“Just don’t tell Babs,” he laughed
“So who is this guy I’m staying with?” She asked taking a bite of pastry “I mean I need to check I’m not staying with a serial killer, obviously,”
“I wouldn’t send you to a serial killers house,”
“Mm unless you were in on it?” she laughed and even though she couldn’t see Morgan she knew he was rolling his eyes. “I haven’t heard you mention a Will before” she asked. Mo and Maggie regularly chatted and even facetimed. She had met a couple of his friends over facetime like Jake who was Mo’s best friend/ roommate and then a couple of the other boys Auston and Freddie who had formed group for going out for dinners. But not a Willy.
“William Nylander, he’s a good guy, one of the rookies who plays with me on the leafs, he’s Canadian, Swedish, his family lives out in Sweden so he goes back over summer to see them, but I think it’s just him and his brother in the city at the moment,”
“Oh cool, if he’s a good friend of yours,”
“Yeah, I mean were pretty close, Just erm,” he paused for a moment. “Willy.. He tends to have a lot of girls throw themselves at him, he’s quite the charmer and I don’t want it to be awkward what with you being my friend and all,”
‘Jesus Morgan I’m twenty not some hormonal teenage girl,”
“Yeah, well you I’m just letting you know,”
“Thanks,”
“Anyway I’ve text him your number, he said he’ll send you the details and stuff,” he said with a yawn. “ I have to go Mags, I have to get to training just text me and let me know you got to Willy’s ok,”
“Sure,”
“Love ya loser,”
“Bye Morgs,”
She smiled, thank god that crisis was averted. Maggie thought she might have to sleep in the train station tonight. Her phone pinged again but this time it was a number she didn’t recognize.
To: Maggie
From:+46 771 793 355
Hey, it’s Willy, Mo’s teammate, he said you needed a place to crash tonight? We’re in the Östermalm. Here is the address: Flat 90, Floragatan Stockholm, Östermalm: 122 869 SEK. Give me a call if you have any trouble finding it. Willy x

Interview with Dominic Thiem from Tennis-mag (August 2017)
At the heart of the young go-getters’ rise in the ATP circuit is Dominic Thiem. At 23 years of age, he is already getting dangerously close to the world’s top players. A rock-solid mindset, strength to spare, and a stunning backhand… these are some of the aspects of the Austrian’s game that have allowed him to reach the Top Ten.
And this is just the beginning! Already some dare compare him to Rafael Nadal due to his declared preference for clay and his ultra-careful strokes. It’s hard to believe he won’t one day lift the Musketeers’ Trophy in Paris.
It’s true that he came close a few months ago, when he reached the semi finals at the Porte d’Auteil. However, an unambiguous defeat facing the Spaniard made him realize he still had a long way to go before claiming his first title at Roland-Garros.
The New Face of the ATP
We can rejoice about the performance of the new generation in men’s tennis, who is challenging the world hierarchy of the “Big Four” now more than ever.
The eighth best tennis player in the world already has six combined victories (as of June 28, 2017) against the quartet comprised of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer. It’s a statistic that allows us to believe that the Austrian is capable of competing with the cream of the crop.
A professional since 2011, Thiem arrives in Montreal with eight ATP title in his pocket: Nice (2015-2016), Umag, Gstaad, Buenos Aires, Acapulco, Stuttgart, Rio de Janeiro.
The latter has agreed to sit down with the Tennis-mag team in order to look back on the first half of his season as well as on his career up until now.
Q: Now that you are part of the world elite, do you feel more pressure on your shoulders?
A: Expectations are higher and it’s fine that way. People expect me to perform well, and I do too. Nevertheless, I think it’s a good kind of pressure. It’s an honour to see people believing in me. It fills me with pride. I give it my all during every match in order to reach their expectations… and especially mine!
Q: You have shown us on several occasions that you have very strong mental game. How do you work on that aspect of your game that is so important in tennis?
A: I don’t train that aspect in a concrete manner. However, I spend a lot of time on the court practicing all my strokes thousands of times. I repeat that process continually. That way, I can be sure (or practically sure!) to win the big point when it matters most.
Q: The “Big Four” (Murray, Nadal, Djokovic, Federer) have dominated for a long time. However, you and some other players seem to have been designated as their successors. It’s flattering, isn’t it?
A: Yes, it’s really an honour for me. Everyone asks me who the next stars of the circuit will be. But in my opinion, the “Big Four” are far from retiring. Federer won the Australian Open at the age of 35, Nadal on the other hand won his tenth title at Roland-Garros, while Djokovic and Murray are always a threat. That being said, when the time comes, I hope I will be one of the dominating players along with other young stars like Zverev, Pouille, Kyrgios, Goffin, etc.
Q: You’ve come to Montreal only once before this year (2015). How did you find the city?
A: Montreal is a very beautiful city. The tournament is incredible and the people are nice and very friendly. I look forward to returning.
Q: You’re more popular than ever. Is it difficult to get used to all that attention?
A: No, it’s not difficult. It’s just a little strange. I notice that when I go out to dinner, people will ask me to take pictures and sign autographs. It doesn’t bother me at all! It’s just new for me.
Q: You have trained with Günter Bresnik for several years. What makes your relationship so special?
A: Probably the fact that we have been together for so long. I grew up with him. He’s always been there. I have to admit he was a bit intimidating when I was a nine-year-old boy. Nevertheless, my parents trusted him. It was the same for me, and that is still the case now. He knows what he is talking about. Without his presence and that of my parents, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now.
Q: What are your short- and long-term goals?
A: In the short-term, I want to have a good season on grass and do well at Wimbledon [Editor’s note: Thiem reached the round of sixteen]. Then I want to transition well into the hardcourt season. But it’s not always easy to set short-term goals when everything is happening so quickly.
It’s obvious that all tennis players dream of winning a Grand Slam tournament. It’s my goal, but I still have a long way to go.
Q: You travel a lot during the season. Do you find that difficult?
A: Who can boast about travelling, seeing so many wonderful places, and calling that “work”? Not many people! As a tennis player, I’m lucky enough to see all these places. So no, I don’t think there are any negative aspects to travelling.
Q: What does an average day in the life of Dominic Thiem look like?
A: I wake up and eat breakfast. Then I go train. After, I eat and play a match. Depending on the outcome, I either buy a plane ticket to go to my next tournament or I reserve a table at a restaurant to celebrate my victory with my team. As you can see, it’s not as glamourous as you’d believe.
Quick questions
Favourite tournament? Roland-Garros.
Favourite city? Vienna (Austria).
If you weren’t a tennis player, what would you be? Probably a tennis coach (ha ha)!
Favourite athlete (in any sport)? That’s a difficult question because there are so many incredible athletes. I will say the first name that comes to mind: Didier Drogba. But there are others.
Other than tennis, what are your favourite sports? Soccer and ski jumping.
Have you played ice hockey? Does it count if I handled a puck while on skates when I was four years old?
Favourite vacation spot? Sylt in Germany.
Favourite meal? Sushi.

Love it or hate it, Amazon has decided to rename a sports venue in Seattle, Washington, the “Climate Pledge Arena.”
On Thursday, Amazon announced it had secured the naming rights to KeyArena, which will play home to a new NHL hockey team and the city’s WNBA team, the Seattle Storm. The company could’ve easily renamed the building after itself, like so many corporate sponsors tend to do. But Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had another idea in mind.
“Instead of naming it after Amazon, we’re calling it Climate Pledge Arena as a regular reminder of the importance of fighting climate change,” he said in today’s announcement.
The new name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. But it does promote Amazon’s Climate Pledge project, a plan the company announced a year ago to reduce its impact on the environment.
The pledge calls for Amazon to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. This means the company can technically still generate carbon emissions, but it’ll need to offset them either by planting trees or using other carbon capture technologies. To pull this off, Amazon is transitioning to electric delivery vehicles and tapping renewable energies to power its operations; it also created a $2 billion fund for “decarbonizing” technologies.
The new Climate Pledge Arena is also being folded into the pledge. According to Amazon, the 18,000-seat venue is being redesigned to become the first net zero carbon sports arena in the world.
The plan is to convert the arena into an all-electric building powered by renewable energies, including solar. To create the ice for NHL team games, the site will rely on reclaimed rainwater. All events at the arena will also use durable and compostable containers so the arena can divert 95 percent of trash away from landfills.
“Our goal is to be the most progressive, responsible, and sustainable venue in the world,” said Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group, the arena’s owner.
Climate Pledge Arena is scheduled to open in late summer 2021. According to The Seattle Times, the renovation project for the sports venue is expected to exceed $930 million in costs.
In the meantime, critics on social media are already rolling their eyes at the name change, and wondering if the funds could be better spent elsewhere. Amazon declined to say how much it paid for the naming rights. But rumors suggest Oak View Group was asking for as much as $14 million annually for the arena’s naming rights.
Amazon isn’t the only company committed to its Climate Pledge plan. Earlier this month, Verizon, Infosys, and British company Reckitt Benckiser joined the pledge as well.

It’s No. 1 Denver vs. No. 2 Minnesota Duluth for college hockey’s grand prize
CHICAGO — It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2, again. It’s the National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season champion against the NCHC tournament champion. It’s the two best teams from December, and now. It’s Denver and Duluth — fittingly. In a quintessential NCAA title game Saturday night at the United Center, the top-seeded Pioneers (32-7-4) take on the No. 2 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth (28-6-7) in a win-win situation for the Colorado Springs-based NCHC. The country’s most competitive conference had the country’s top-two ranked teams most of the season, and the sport’s final game of the season is a rematch of the two-game series at Magness Arena in December, when UMD was ranked No.1 and DU was No. 2. Denver coach Jim Montgomery, who is trying to become the fourth person to win an NCAA title as a player and head coach, summed up the rivalry in two words: “Fiercely respectful.” UMD, which won 3-1 in Denver on Dec. 10 to salvage a series split — the Pioneers won the opener 4-3 — is on an eight-game winning streak and 8-1-1 in its last 10 games. DU is 17-1 in its last 18 games, with the lone loss coming March 17 to North Dakota in the NCHC semifinals. The Bulldogs went on to beat North Dakota for the NCHC tournament championship. Denver routed Notre Dame 6-1 in Thursday’s national semifinals and is seeking its eighth national title. Minnesota Duluth, which scored in the final minute of regulation to beat Harvard 2-1 in the other semifinal, is vying for its second. “We all know how good and talented Duluth is,” Montgomery said before practice Friday at the United Center. “They’re a mentally tough team. They’re hard in all three zones. They don’t give you an inch. We know that. You’re going to have to go out and earn it. That’s why I think it’s going to be a great game.” Denver has advanced to its 11th national title game in relatively easy fashion. The Pioneers rolled over Michigan Tech (5-2) and Penn State (6-3) at the Midwest Regional in Cincinnati before Thursday’s blowout over the Fighting Irish. The Pios have outscored their three opponents 8-1 in the first period and built 5-0 leads against Michigan Tech and Notre Dame. The Bullodgs, on the other hand, have won three thrillers — beginning with 3-2 overtime wins against Ohio State and Boston University at the West Regional in Fargo, N.D. Forward Alex Iafallo scored with 27 seconds remaining to beat Harvard, which led 1-0 early. “Our team has certainly had their character tested a lot in the second half,” Bulldogs coach Scott Sandelin said. “We haven’t had any blowout games. But I think our guys have grown a little tighter together. I think that drive, when you start finding ways to win those games, continues to grow.” UMD will gets its first look playing against DU leading scorer Henrik Borgstrom, the freshman from Finland who missed the December series with an illness. “I saw those games. We lost one,” Borgstrom said. “It’s going to be good to play for it all against another NCHC team. It feels unreal to be here, so excited and don’t really know what to say right now.” Montgomery said his freshman’s influence could be big for the Pioneers. “Anytime you can inject one of the most talented offensive players in college hockey into a lineup that the opposing team hasn’t seen, it’s a benefit,” the coach said. “When you get on the ice (against Borgstrom), it’s a different world, especially for goaltenders.” But Denver is far from a one-dimensional offensive team. The Pioneers generally play four lines equally at even-strength and received two goals from their so-called fourth line Thursday. “Coach has the confidence to put out all four lines and our line just wants to go out there and contribute in whatever way we can,” said 23-year-old sophomore Colin Staub, a Colorado Springs product who assisted on goals by seniors Emig Romig and Evan Ritt against Notre Dame. “And last night we were fortunate enough to be able to get two goals, and it really helped our team get started with Romig’s first goal of the game. And that’s just what we want to provide.” Denver is equally impressive defensively — with junior goalie Tanner Jaillet and talented defensemen led by seniors Will Butcher and Matt VanVoorhis, juniors Adam Plant and Tariq Hammond and sophomore Blake Hillman. “They’ve got some great skill and shiftiness,” Sandelin said of DU’s blue line. “You’ve got to be careful. You can try and play really aggressive in their face, but they support the puck so well and those guys are pretty elusive that you’ve got to certainly play above the puck. Be aggressive when you can be. But just defensively you’ve got to be tight. And you’re going to have to weather some storms. They’re going to play in the offensive zone and they transition well. But in the offensive zone, they possess the puck, they move, they get five men involved in the attack, and obviously they’ve got some great guys to finish around the net.” NCAA Tournament, Frozen Four championship game/comparisons Minnesota Duluth (28-6-7) vs. Denver (32-7-4) Coach: Scott Sandelin (315-283-82, 17th year) … Jim Montgomery (101-47-11, fourth year) Goals/for: 3.37 3.47 Goals/against: 2.24 1.81 Power play: 19.8% 21.5% Penalty kill: 80.9% 84.1% Avg. height / weight: 6-1/196 5-11/182 Last five games: 5-0 4-1 Leading scorers: F Alex Iafallo, Sr. 20-30-50 … F Troy Terry, So. 22-21-43 F Adam Johnson, So. 18-19-37 … F Henrik Borgstrom, Fr. 22-21-43 F Joey Anderson, Fr. 12-24-36 ….
