just love the idea of Spock being relatively oblivious of Terran dating conventions and what not (I imagine Vulcans that don’t end up with arranged pairings are still rather straightforward) and while in San Fran he really has no interest in learning so then he goes to Bones for advice on Jim when he finally gets the gumption and Bones (to his credit) gives that advice

but Bones is also like. divorced. and the cheesiest man to exist. So the advice Spock gets is like, uber old fashioned and ridiculous to the point Jim assumes this must be some kinda prank or that Spock just doesn’t know what he’s doing

which he doesn’t but not in that way

so he thinks they’re dating and Jim thinks it’s a cultural misunderstanding of some kind and is too polite to say something
