Happy Halloween! Here is a few paragraphs from a fic I started and abandoned. It is in my folder as 'hospital wip' and until today I'd completely forgotten it existed.

**** The social worker blinked at them in confusion.

“Could you excuse us for just a minute?” Nile was all sweetness and smiles until the woman left the room. Then she turned and hissed, “Andy! You cannot just keep saying ‘if it’s my time, it’s my time!’”

Andy shrugged (carefully, around the tubes and things.) “It’s true though. I don’t want any of that shit.” They’d talked about it all as a family, of course. No extreme measures. Not even very many perfectly moderate measures. At home, among the people who knew her, it was… not easy, but it made sense.

Here though, filling out paperwork, surrounded by strangers, there was no way to explain why a woman who still looked relatively young by the standards of the day was so completely indifferent to living as long as possible. Nile sighed. On paper she was Andy’s niece; she’d made it through the release forms and the medical power of attorney forms, and if they could just finish Andy’s advance directives then maybe they’d get some privacy and she could update the others.

“You can just say ‘no.’ Or ‘no thank you,’ if you feel like being polite. You don’t have to get all mystical and obscure about it.”

“Non-mystical and polite. Got it.” There was a glint of something in her eyes that Nile didn’t trust.

Nile shook her head and stood to call the social worker back in. “You could try not being a pain in the ass, you know.”

Andy settled back on the pillows and grinned. “No thank you.”

**** Nicky watched as Joe fidgeted in his chair. He kept making small, furtive motions toward his phone, once even going so far as to rest is fingers on it before pulling his hand back. After a while, he growled in frustration and turned it on. When he pulled up his contacts, Nicky said softly, “She’ll call if there’s news.”

Joe thumbed the screen lock on but didn’t relinquish the phone. “I know. I know. I just… it’s been hours. Most of the day.” His fingers drummed a complex polyrhythm on the back of the case. “Waiting like this is excruciating. I wish I had your calm.”

“I am not calm, Joe. I am simply… still.” They spoke the final word together; it was a refrain they’d repeated countless times over the centuries, in countless languages. It was true though: Joe hated the nervous energy that gripped him at times like this, and Nicky’s lack of movement came from tension, not tranquility.

Joe tucked himself around Nicky in the armchair. “Stress ball?”

“Please.” They wrapped around each other – arms and, as much as possible, legs – and squeezed as hard as they could. After a few moments, they let go, releasing some of their tension as well. Joe’s face came to rest tucked against Nicky’s neck.

Sonic character music HCs

 I’ve been obsessed with both the Sonic the hedgehog series and Music in general for over a year now, so i figured i could combine those interests in a fun way. I’m gonna describe what kind of music i personally think the characters would like/listen to. And just so you know, this is just my thoughts on it, i’m not saying im right or anything. And while i am trying to match these genuinely, it’s also not something i’m taking fully seriously. I’m just doin this for fun :)

I also suggest looking up some of the terms/artists/genres i use here if you’re not already familiar with them! Might help you understand my reasoning a bit more, and who knows, you might even find a new favourite artist 👀

Oh, and one more thing. While i am of course going to go off of music i’m familiar with, i’ll try to avoid assigning characters music that i like just because its music that i like. That being said, i will of course, be just a tad bit biased. Anyways, time to start with the blue boy himself!!

Sonic

Sonic is somewhat easy. Seeing as how his main thing is standing up against tyranny, i imagine he’d definitely be a fan of punk. At first i thought of pop punk specifically, due to its high energy, but i feel like Sonic would find it a bit too commercial. Same thing with skate punk. I feel like anarcho-punk could be a little more up his alley? Maybe something like chumbawumba.

Oh, and personal bias time: I think he would like King gizzard and the Lizard wizard due to the themes of enviromentalism.

Tails

Now, i’m completely split between two different paths here. The first option is EDM. Just overall music that sounds electronic, maybe dance, i dunno. The second option however, is one that i personally prefer: Just like, music with weirdass time signatures and polyrhythms n shit. Math rock, Prog, that kinda stuff. Specific bands i’m thinking about is Tool, King crimson, Black midi, maybe even KGLW (again, personal bias). Tails would think music theory is fucking dope and would be OBSESSED with this kinda music lmao.

Knuckles

Now, this is the rare instance that i feel justified in being biased, because his level themes in sa2 make me believe that knuckles is a hiphop head. Specifically, instrumental hip hop. I think he’d be a big fan of J Dilla’s style of hip hop production in general, with the soft fuzzy feel of songs like The light. Otherwise i feel like he likes some boom bap, like Illmatic.

Amy

I honestly feel like Amy is the kinda person who enjoys like, any type of music? Like this gal will listen to some chill folk music and then go directly to hardcore industrial rock lmao. I think her favourite genre is pop though. First artist that pops into mind is Carly rae jepsen, not only because she makes great pop music, but also since her songs are often about love, which i feel fits Amy pretty well. She’d probably like something more off-kilter like art pop too. She LOVES Björk, i feel confident in saying that.

Shadow

I’ve noticed that this one is quite varied (and if you’re curious, i don’t really mind the whole taylor swift thing, but i also don’t really care for it either), but i want to bring up a genre that i haven’t seen anyone else suggest Shadow being a fan of: Shoegaze. I think he would find the whole noisy, dreamlike, nearly overwhelming feeling of shoegaze calming. I don’t know, there’s just something about Shoegaze that makes me feel like it fits shadow perfectly. Only bands i really know are Slowdive and My bloody valentine, but i still feel confident in my opinion.

I also feel like the idea of him enjoying indie folk (something like the mountain goats) but would not be caught DEAD listening to it is really funny. The day that rouge finds out will not be a happy day for anyone in a ten mile radius.

Now, there’s a very easy answer here. Jazz. But i feel like rouge would also enjoy stuff like Soul and funk. She’d also check out music Shadow listens to, both to annoy him and out of genuine interest. Not much else i have to say here tbh.

Silver

Similarly to Amy, i think Silver enjoys practically anything and everything, and is also super open to trying new stuff. If he has a preference though, i think he enjoys dance music? Or just electronic stuff in general. Daft punk comes to mind, specifically Discovery.

I feel like Blaze is someone who simply hasn’t been able to listen to a lot of music yet? Her friends (particularly Silver and Amy) have given her a bunch of recommendations, and while she doesn’t have a preference yet, she has enjoyed some of the stuff that they have played.

Vector

On the complete contrary to Blaze, Vector is a supreme Music nerd. You name an artist or album, he is at the very least aware of them. He’s the kinda guy who will talk about some super obscure folk album from the 70′s and refer to it as if its some kind of holy grail. It’s great. He would have a vinyl collection, but due to the chaotix’s financial situation, he settles for CDs instead. Again, he enjoys practically anything, but i feel like his favourite genre is progrock. He also remixes music for fun.

And thats it!! I’ll try to think of more that i can add in a reblog, but for now, this is all that i can think of. Again, this is just my opinion, but i’d love to hear some of yalls thoughts!! why you think im correct or wrong or however!!

Kevin’s POV

Hunter and I are in his basement practicing when I’m waiting for my queue to play. Then Hunter stops pauses“Ugh! This pick sucks.”

But then he continues playing while I fix the crash cymbal on my drums but he stops playing again “My strap’s not right, that’s…Okay. Okay, there we go” after he’s fixed his strap he starts playing yet again and after a few short moments.

“Cocks. All right, hold on. Let’s scoop that midrange.” And the playing continues “Nice.” Hunter said happily as he fixed the problem.

“One, two, three, four!” Hunter yelled and that’s my queue and I start playing but it sounds sloppily.

“Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop” Hunter stops me so I look up at him “What was that?” He said sounding disappointed

“I was just-- You said play something fast” I stated and Hunter tuts

“Did you read the music that I wrote for you?” He questioned. “Yeah” I said and pointed to the sheet music “Do you know what polyrhythms are?” He questioned me again and I paused before speaking

“Yeah” I said quickly “I don’t. These aren’t my drums. They belong to Hunter. And he came up with the band name. I don’t play the drums i play the drum. This drum, in marching band for two years. I do it to get out of PE, but Hunter’s says that doesn’t matter. All it takes to be great is commitment and sacrifice, which is what metal’s all about. Or maybe it’s about power, or sticking it to the man, or denim, or motorcycles, or speed, or devil. I don’t totally understand it, but Hunter’s says I don’t have to. All I have to do is--" I'm pulled out of my thoughts.

"Play something heavy, man" Hunter said "Okay. Like, uh…'Rock of Ages'?" i asked and Hunter looked at my like I was insane “Heavy” he said and I nodded my head then he starts playing a riff.

“Play… something heavy, Play…something heavy.” So I started to play the drums a little bit louder and I started to sound good but I will sound by hitting the crash cymbal too loud, so Hunter stop playing so then I stop playing and Hunter sighs and blows a raspberry and thinks for a second.

“We need a bass player” Hunter said and I hum in agreement so Hunter continues on talking “A bass player will be huge for us” so I continue on with his thought “Yeah, no doubt” and Hunter agrees “No, doubt.” “No, doubt”

(Scene skip ⏭️)

I’m at school on the football field during marching band practice and you can hear the whistle blow from far away even over the music.

And all 30 of us are walking in a straight line along the field while I have my little drum hanging from around my neck. Then i can hear the sound of a clarinet being played out of tune at the back row and the band teacher looks at the student unimpressed “Stop. Stop” so we all stop playing the music and listen to the teacher.

“That’s enough for today. Y/n, can I talk to you for a second?” That’s Y/n L/n the girl with a slight anger issue and my crush since ninth grade. So she nods and the teacher walks over to her while the rest of us walk away but you can still hear bits of there conversation “The song you’re playing is not the song they are playing. I’m not sure you’re even playing a march, we’ve talked about this. You have to listen and play” the teacher continues to speak but you could clearly see the girl getting mad and about to break the clarinet.

“It’s an orchestra, right? I know we’re in a marching band, but--“ but he pauses “I see you’re, upset.” First rule never say that too a person with anger issues “Fuck you! Fuck you!” We heard the girl scream so we all turn around “Fuck! I don’t give a fuck about what I’m playing! I don’t give a fuck about what they’re playing!”

And I put my glasses on to see what’s really happening, then you see her throw the clarinet across the field and it lands straight in the grass“Fuck you! Fuck your shitty band! Fucking bullshit!” I hear the guy next to me say “Too bad she can’t play like she throws.” But you can still hear Y/n still yelling “I don’t give a fuck, so fuck you! Fuck you. Cunt!” And the band teacher yells at her as she walks off the field “You can’t say that in America” but she doesn’t give a fuck and the bell rings and I walk into the school and start heading toward Hunter’s locker after changing when I start thinking.

That seemed pretty metal to me, but I’m not sure. I’ll ask Hunter about it. I don’t really know Y/n that well I have her number but only because we were partner in science and had to do a project together. Hunter he’s been into many things since I met him, but he stuck with metal longer than any of them. When his mom left in seventh grade, he decided it was the key to everything. If we devote ourselves to metal, we’ll own this school. Everybody will see what we really are and worship us like gods. I’m willing to give it a try. Hunter’s been my best friend ever since he stopped Molly Levine from pulling out my hair in the third grade. He always looks out for me.

I stop thinking as I reach Hunter’s locker and see him pointing at me with wide eyes and telling me to move out of he way but I don’t understand what he’s saying and I’m pushed into a locker by some stupid asshole jock and Y/n walks by getting to her locker that was close by Hunter’s “Asshole” she said to that douch bag but he just keeps walking and so does she, then Hunter walks up to me.

“Skip Hoffman sucks pig dicks.” but I think other wise “I don’t think he was trying to hit me. I was just in the way” when I say that I hear a scoff from behind me “If you think that then you’re fucking stupid” Y/n said and walked away to her next class, when I hear Clay and Skip talking “--What I’m ready for is your homecoming after-party, man.”

“Yep. My parents are in Geneva. So bring the whole school if you want, man, seriously. Tell whoever. Everyone’s invited.” Clay said to Skip like it’s the most normal thing ever.

The cafeteria is always a busy place but not many people really wanted to sit with Hunter and I so we really got a table all by ourselves.

While I’m at the lunch table eating my sandwich I see Y/n sitting at the table across from me and pick at her food when two girls walk up to her table and she looks up and gives them a small smile and then they’re about to sit down but one of the girls says something to the other then look at Y/n then walk away and laugh then Y/n goes back to playing with her food, I feel bad for her.

“Hey man, what’s up?” Hunter walk up to the table and sits down and puts his tray of food on the table “Did you ask your mom about the double bass kit?” He ask and I nodded my head while drinking my water “What’d she say?” So I put down my water “She said she doesn’t have a thousand dollars.” I said and looked down at my food

“Okay, well, what about a double bass pedal? Won’t get the resonance, but we’ll have that attack.” And I cut him off “Yeah, she said she doesn’t have $150 either” and Hunter looks like he’s in thought and I look back behind him so then he does the same and sees me looking at Y/n and turns back to me “She’s in my speech class, I think she’s English. Scottish. I don’t know, I heard she went apeshit on the band teacher.” I continue looking at her playing with with her food with a disgusted look on her food and sighs to herself then goes on her phone

“Yeah I saw it” I said “That’s one messed up chick.” Hunter then takes his jacket off and I start thinking about the party and I’m thinking of asking Y/n to go to the party with Hunter and I. So I get up from my chair and walk over to her table “Hey” I said to her and see looks up at me with wide eyes and puts her phone down “Umm Hi, what’s up?” She asked confused “So I was wondering if you want to go to a party with Hunter and I” I stated

black midi is such a wild fucking band. one second they’re the most horrendous and hilarious thing you’ve ever heard. Another second has you standing still in awe and maybe even tearing up a little in the middle of the crowd. everyone in the band is insanely talented but they also sometimes sound like theyve never picked up an instrument in their entire lives. youre watching them basically make fart noises with their guitars yet youre still dancing along. before you know it youre in a circle pit to the weird polyrhythm part of John L, watching some people in the center attempt to waltz to it.

i will never get over them for as long as i’m alive. weird to say but they seriously changed my life. every time i go to one of their shows, i re-realize why I want to be in a band someday.

i tried to make it a loop as best i could 😭

this bass is tuned to E standard in 432hz as opposed to the standard 440hz because i'm quirky for no reason. the key of the riff is either A major if you want to be boring or E mixolydian if you're feeling a little adventurous, i feel like it's the latter just because i relate the rest of the song to E as the root note. i've been messing around with tapping a lot recently and trying different time signatures (this riff is in 5/4) and i'll eventually get into polyrhythms when i'm comfortable playing any time signature on its own!! i'm also using a chorus and room sized reverb through my bass amp just to add that extra dreamy flavour.

i don't know what the fuck to call the genre of this :( i don't feel like it's jazz because there's no real swing to it. i don't really want to call it emo because it's not particularly harsh. it's too complicated to be dreampop so i guess it's prog? fusion maybe? idk

I'm gonna start making music under my new name, but I'm having trouble deciding on the approach I wanna take. Do I wanna break out the studio equipment, fancy plugins? Do I just wanna record it all to tape and do whatever weird production shit I want? Do I want drums? Lots of complex insrumentation? Maybe just some guitar and vocals? What fucking genres do I even want to tackle?

It is important for me to ask myself these questions because if I start making music aimlessly these days it just turns into either electroacoustic ambient/noise or some bullshit with 5:7 polyrhythms and noodly guitar.

So is there a realistic chance they will play Perfume no Okite in London?

Yes (2016 ver. see teaser). But the set will be packed. It won't be easy for staff creating a set list in mind only having to choose from 12-13 tracks. Show could run maybe two hours incl. MC, intermissions and costume changes. Apparently they plan to war a lot of costumes during the live.

I've tried to imagine what could be in there. But i already choosed too many tracks. A medley could solve that problem. ^^

This Is Soca, Vol. 2 1986 Soca / Calypso

I don't think that I've ever deliberately gone out of my way to listen to soca or calypso music before (soca is a term that stands for soul-calypso), but this ephemerally contemporaneous LP from London Records claims to represent the best of an array of the Trinidadian stuff from 1985 and 1986. So, as something of a perpetual music explorer myself, color me both intrigued and excited to start to dig into something totally new! 😊

And here's some takeaways: one, I don't think that this is necessarily a great album for just sitting down and straight-up listening to, but if I was glued to a stool at an outdoor Caribbean beach bar with this coming out of its speakers, and I also had a few Modelos in me, I could definitely see my stupid tourist ass vibing real hard to some of this stuff, especially a song like "Too Young to Soca," sung by Machel Montano, who was just 11 years old when he made it. But by that same token, if I had the job of tending that outdoor Caribbean beach bar, and I had to hear all of these songs at least once a day, there's a slight chance that they might actually cause me to go insane 😅.

Secondly, a solid chunk of these tunes sound like they could play in the first act of some hypothetical, animated, Caribbean-set Disney flick, in which everyone—the people, the animals, and even the plant life—all sing and sway together in perfect harmony, before any real conflict starts to arise. So, in that sense, this stuff's just a little too polished and clean for my liking. And I also think that you can draw a straight line from this very cheery 80s soca vibe to some of 90s and 2000s Europop's most insufferable and overly sugary tendencies, especially the kind that imported Latin and Caribbean sounds; like this total monstrosity from Loona, for example 😫.

That said, I still managed to discover a couple awesome tunes on here. One is the danciest track of the bunch, a polyrhythmic floor destroyer with a bunch of stabbing horns on it by a guy from Montserrat (a British territory a few hundred miles north of Trinidad and Tobago) called Arrow, who was apparently the island’s first soca star and enjoyed himself a very long and fruitful career. "Party People Rock" is a super infectious track.

And the other great song is one that intermittently features some steelpan on it, which I think is one of the world's most underappreciated instruments. It's called "The Hammer," by Charlies Roots, and despite the song only receiving just a sprinkling of that steelpan, there's no doubt that it would be significantly worse off without it. The steelpan has just such a cool and relaxingly unique sound to it. I definitely need more of it in my life.

So, there's probably a better introduction to soca music than this album—one that spans more years than just 1985 and 1986—but I'm still glad I managed to find a couple goodies on here. Was definitely expecting to hear a lot more steelpan, though. Maybe it's not actually as central to soca as I thought it was, or maybe this album is just leading me to a wrong conclusion. Guess I'll have to listen to some more in order to find out 🤔.

We are monoconscious so we don't really know how it would work. But. Do you think you can literally hack the system and play super complex polyrhythms just because you're polyconscious? I'm not sure if brain hacking is quite so easy, even with polyconsciousness. It seems like there are still limits on what different headmates can do at once. We tried Voltroning the body once with Abby and Almond, where everyone takes control of different parts of the body to pilot at once

It ended up a complete mess of blendy chaos within seconds! 🤣

It was a really fun experiment to try, testing the boundaries of what was possible. But we didn't accomplish what we set out to at all.

I feel like something like this might work out the same way. At least without practice. And with practice, it's a question of whether the plurality actually contributed or if a singlet could have produced the same results by retraining their minds.

Like, we've done really at Multitask...

We've gotten scores of over 300.

But my host was already scoring over 100 before I existed, and there are other people with scores as high as a thousand. So I have absolutely no idea if being plural actually gives us an edge or if it's just confirmation bias, with maybe a bit of placebo mixed in. 🤷‍♀️
