when i was 12 this was the coolest most mindblowing shit ever i was genuinely so obsessed with it I'd read it very day like the bible. I would die for a version of this with the post 3D world content over my country
#i hve vs super mario bros on my switch bc i wanted to chronologically play through the storied hero timeline and i couldnt find a rom#I think it has the same appeal as spid.erverse kinda except instead of multiple different people filling the same role as sp.iderman its#the same guy it's still mario but the changes come from things going differently at certain points in his life do you GET ME!!#LIKE!!!!!!!! MOST OF IT'S DETERMINED BY WHAT HAPPENS IN YOSHIS ISLAND AND THERES ALTERNATIVE PATHS IF HE WINS OR FAILS!!! GAME OVERS HAVE#CONSEQUENCES THAT BRANCH INTO THEIR OWN TIMELINES MARIO CAN END UP WITH DIFFERENT PARENTS ITS SO COOLLLLLL#and i love how each of the major branches has their own theme like “action hero” is the one with all the gameplay-focused#mainline titles “storied hero” is the one with all the M&L rpgs and more plot-heavier stuff and “blue collar hero” is this third one#with all the donkey kong titles and wackier/arcade titles WHERE i might add his design had a blue shirt and red overalls#and the tl builds off of those games into nsmb so i like to hc that he kept his early 80s design well into the later games <-autistic sorry#AND how thetimelines represent how their different backstories have influenced their personalities and thought processes a little like#what happened to mario in the blue collar branch like he either becomes EVILL!!!! and kidnaps donkey kong leading to dkjr or#divorces peach and has a self isolation arc after nsmb2 whats going on w him...#and i LOVE how all of them have a sort of common event where bowser invades the mushroom kingdom and in each timeline its#represented by a different variation of the original super mario bros game with action hero's event being represented by smb itself#which is fitting since thats the branch where mario and luigi ended up with their intended parents and everything went as planned#and i think a general theme here is that the more things go against intention the sillier it gets dont even get me STARTED on the time#travel shenanigans in bottom right which lead into the handheld remakes i love this so much its unreal#i do wish paper mario wasnt explained away as a dream but like thats its whole other world and art style and itd be difficult#to fit it into one of the major branches so i get why it was done. i probably wouldve just given it its own isolated bubble in the corner#at that rate i probably wouldve added so much more shit to the main tl im talking game&watch games i look at this and i see a pitch#for a full feature length autism production you understand

 Leviathan x reader
~You take Levi to a human world arcade, where he is ready to show off his skills.
W.C: 2.1K
*This was kinda hard to finish since this was like mid-mental breakdown. But I got this done and I am so proud of myself for doing it.
Tumblr media
The summer heat of the human world is a welcome sensation on your skin as you drag a slightly sweaty Avatar of Envy down the sidewalk. As a notorious shut-in, Levi doesn't do well in the sun, and although you had only stepped out of the portal Barbatos had prepared for the two of you two blocks ago, he is already out of breath.
Suddenly, the Demon digs his feet into the pavement, preventing the two of you from moving forward. "MC?" pants, trying and failing to hide his exhaustion 'A-are we almost there?"
You see the familiar half-lit neon sign just a few doors away, "We are so close Levi. I promise it will be nice and cool inside; we can get something to drink and enjoy the Air conditioning."
"Air Conditioning," he repeats in an eager whisper and picks his head up with newfound strength. "Then what are we waiting for? Let's get to the arcade."
His orange and purple eyes are sparkling with determination as you walk the rest of the way to the old-school arcade, where you promised to show him all your favorite classic machines. The red-bricked building looks just the same as before you were magically whisked away to the Devildom those many months ago; the only difference on the outside is a touch-up of fire engine red paint on the double wooden doors.
Pulling open the faded brass door handles, you are met with a strong gust of air conditioning. This second wind hugs you like an old friend as you walk towards the mantra of beeps and boops the retro arcade machines are playing.
"What do you think?" you ask, playfully bumping into Levi's shoulder. "Does this place meet your expectations?"
"Uhh yeah," he exclaims, looking at the rows and rows of games. "This place is so cool Mc. It looks like the arcade in the manga, 'Help! I've been sucked into a game, and the Gorilla King kidnapped me instead of the Princess.'"
How he manages to say such a long title in one breath never ceases to amaze you. But the title gives you a pretty good idea of what game he should try first.
"How about we start with Donkey Kong?" you laugh, reaching into the pocket of your shorts and pulling out a large sandwich bag full of tokens. You toy with the zipper and take out two, one for him and one for you. "Each machine in here only needs one credit, so I think we will be set to play all day without having to get more."
He carefully takes the coin from your hand but doesn't put it into the slot right away. "A-actually you should play first, Mc," he mumbles shyly, stepping back from the temptations on the screen.
"I'll do my best, but I haven't played this in a while," you say, slipping your own token into the slot. "The theme song blares from the old yet well-maintained speakers as the text 'L E V E L 1' flashes across the screen.
You grab hold of the red plastic joystick and place your other hand just over the jump button. Mario's little legs manage to leap over barrel after barrel as he makes his little pixelated self up the ramps. You may be rusty, but muscle memory is working well for you. Within two minutes, you make it to the top of the platform without losing any of your lives. You look to Levi with a smile of victory.
"You're the GOAT Mc," he cheers, leaning over your shoulder to look at the screen, watching in fascination as Donkey Kong swipes the Princess over his shoulder and carries her further up the tower for you to chase.
"I don't remember this part," you murmur, trying to familiarize yourself with the next level. As you move, sentient little fireballs that begin to chase after you. Moving your joystick, you try to gain enough speed to jump over the flames, only to set yourself on fire.
Apparently, you can't jump over them like the barrels from the last level.
Oh shoot," you hiss, watching as Mario falls to the ground and a little halo appears above his head before the screen resets.
"You're good; you still have two lives left." he encourages with clenched fists.
"We got this," you say brightly, moving the joystick once more. You only manage to make it a few steps before accidentally running into the little fireball that was chilling on the blue ladder above you, making you lose yet another life. "No, no, we're good." You sigh, gritting your teeth. You are brought to the bottom of the ladder, and you manage to avoid the fireballs as you try to collect the support blocks that are holding up the structure.
"Keep going Mc; now's the time to take down the Boss," he says, watching as you remove the fifth support on the gorilla's platform. "Just as you are about to cross over to the last one, you fall down the gap you had created and lose your final life.
"That was fun, how about you give it a try." you suggest, "Do you still have the token I gave you?"
"But, you were so close." Levi cries, taking the loss much harder than you are. "Wait, what are those?" he points to the list of high scores that flash on your screen once the 'Game Over' screen fades away with curiosity.
"Those are the machine's high scores." You explain, "If you do well, you can put your name on the board for everyone to see."
"So these are my rivals." he breathes, his hand twitching in anticipation as he takes his token and slides it into the machine.
As the screen once again comes to life, you feel a shift in the air. A competitive energy radiates off of Leviathan as he grips the joystick. Although he has only seen you do the basics, he expertly navigates the first stage, leaping over barrels and climbing ladders without a hint of hesitation.
With the first half of the level cleared you are brought to the next phase, where you met your demise only minutes earlier. But Levi looks at the screen as if it is nothing more than a challenge and jumps in fearlessly, collecting vintage landlines, parasols, and support beams until the platform disappears.
With the first level being cleared in the blink of an eye, you realize that the two of you will definitely be here for a while.
"You're really good at this," You say, placing a hand on his shoulder. You notice how he seems to lean into your touch, and he spares you a glance as the screen transitions to the start of Level Two.
"Could you stay there?" he asks with a shaky voice. The screen in front of him does little to hide the glow on his face. If he wasn't holding on to the joystick, you know he would try to hide his blushing cheeks with his hands. "You might be my good luck charm or whatever normies say."
You only laugh and give his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "I can do that. I promise I won't leave your side."
"T-thank you Mc." he murmurs softly, "I want to get that high score."
The thing with the Donkey Kong arcade game is that each level gets longer, faster, and more challenging. You have never even seen what lies beyond the end of level two, so this is all new territory for the both of you.
But Levi never falters, staring at the screen with amber eyes filled with determination. Even with a few strands of his purple hair covering his face, he seems comfortable. You are so focused on watching his features that you don't realize that he has successfully cleared level two just as easily as the first.
And what neither of you realize is that a small crowd of arcade onlookers are watching your screen from behind you.
The barrels in level three zoom across the screen at an uncomfortably fast pace, but Levi just jumps over them as if they were nothing. A part of you wonders if his skills are just a result of his inhuman reflexes, but after seeing how winded the Otaku got walking down the street to the arcade, you push that through from your head.
"Woah, is that guy even human?" one of the onlookers gasps as Levi clears level 3 without breaking a sweat. "I've never seen anyone get this far without taking any damage." You turn around to see that quite a large group of about twenty-five to thirty people are watching your screen in fascination.
The shy Demon's breath hitches; he doesn't usually play games in front of a live crowd, but you stop him from turning around and seeing just how large the crowd is.
"You got this Levi. Don't worry about them; they are just watching you."
"Live?" he murmurs with wide eyes. Despite his efforts to hide it, he trembles slightly. "I'm a shut-in for a reason; all this attention makes my stomach feel like it's tying itself in knots."
"Just think of it as a live stream." you encourage brightly. "If you focus on the game, you won't be able to see them at all."
"An IRL livestream?" he repeats, a small smile appearing on his face. "I can work with that."
"I knew you could." You grin, giving him a little peck on the cheek for good luck. He lets go of the joystick briefly to touch his cheek, trying to savor the sweet sensation of your lips.
"Look out!" One of the onlookers shouts as a barrel comes towards the in-game avatar. The next level had started.
Levi's hands fly back to the machine and he avoids the obstacle in the nick of time. "Oh, my Diavolo, that was close." He mumbles just loud enough for you to hear. He turns his attention fully back to the screen and starts running up the ramp.
"Too close," you sigh as the crowd behind him only seems to grow in number and tenacity as they react to every little movement on the screen. The idea of flustering him with something as simple as a peck on the cheek is flattering beyond words, and you smile devilishly, planning to use this little method to distract him during your game nights.
"He's almost there." someone yells as Levi reaches the final platform. The Fireballs flicker menacingly, creeping across the screen, but they are no match for Levi's inhuman gaming reflexes. He climbs, collects, and leaps as if he were the one inside the game fighting for his life, holding the joystick as if it were his lifeline.
Aside from the machine, not a sound can be heard in the bustling arcade as everyone watches Levi grab the last support beam.
DK crashes to the ground, and the crowd erupts in cheers. Levi shyly looks over his shoulder to see just how many humans were cheering him on. He looks nervous, but this is one of the first times the Avatar of Envy has been so openly praised in a public setting. For once, he doesn't have to worry about not being as strong as Beel, as flashy as Mammon, or as put-together and OP as Lucifer. Today, he gets to be Leviathan, and people like him for it.
It puts a real smile on his face, even as the crowd thins and the arcade populace goes to play games of their own.
"Levi, look, you got the high score on the machine," you exclaim, pointing at the blinking Number One spot on the machine. Your interjection was a welcome, distracting him from thinking any more about his perceived shortcomings or petty comparisons.
The other scores look so much smaller than his, and a proud smile appears on the Demon's face as he types in the first three letters of his name.
L.E.V
"Should I start calling you Lev now?" you tease watching the cute way his brow furrows as he tries to figure out what nickname he should put instead.
He turns to look at you, accidentally pressing the submit button in the process. "No, I didn't mean to do that. Why am I so embarrassing?" he puts his head in his hands and stares at the score sheet.
Reaching into your bag, you pull out another token for him, "Now you'll just have to beat your own high score."

word salad #4
happy twilight Thursday!
Tumblr media
today is a work day and something I'm thinking about right now is, yes just because this may be a daily blog doesn't necessarily mean I need to go into full detail about how every part of my days go. otherwise I'd be ranting about work for a vast majority of these entires.
so instead I wanna talk about... retro 3D platformers
a while back I came across a game called Cavern of Dreams. it claims itself to be inspired by retro 3D platformers. it features low poly graphics and textures with simple lighting effects, reminiscent of late N64 games. the gameplay feels very much like if Conker's Bad fur day was lighthearted and wholesome. what's also neat is camera controls are more reminiscent of later games, Mario sunshine and Zelda wind waker immediately come to mind for me. I've gotten through the first part of the game and really loving it so far, and the controls are probably the best I've seen in a long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but while thinking about this, I sorta made a bit of a realization... growing up, games like this were referred to as adventure games instead of 3d platformers. heck, I don't think I've seen the term "platformer" until around the mid 2000s. even Mario games I think we're more well known as action adventure games, or Zelda games being a puzzle adventure. PC adventure games tend to be point and click games, which is vastly different than what consoles typically offered. I personally think that NSMB for the DS may be in part why we now make this distinction as the 2D Mario games play vastly different than their 3D games, notably being easier to pick up and play.
but while on this thought train, I sorta began to wonder what sort of similarities that 3D platformers from this era had vs a point and click adventure game. what I ended up deciding on was: exploration. point and click games, you topically make progress by exploring the world around you and finding clues and solving puzzles by exploring the environment and talking to npcs. 3d platformers is... actually kinda the same, while typically focusing on item collecting, many similar elements show up such as exploring worlds and finding ways to progress by interacting with the levels and different characters.
while on that thought about collecting items...
a lot of late 90s and early 2000s platformers would feature collecting a long list of items. one prominent example is donkey Kong 64, which tends to be known as the game that killed collectathons. I have some thoughts on but I'll save for another entry, but I guess I will say that calling such games a collectathon very much misses the point of what the game is actually about. is it a game where you are sent out into a level and made to collect all the random items scattered on the ground, or is it a game where you're friends have been captured and your hoard of bananas have been stolen and you must rescue your friends and recover your bananas in order to progress while learning new moves and meeting interesting creatures who either help you or try to intervene. I dunno about most, but I like the latter premise better. (or maybe I out much more weight on a storyline for a game as opposed to the gameplay)
I hope this entry wasn't too hard or confusing to read, I guess I'm mostly rambling and jotting down bits and pieces of what's in my mind when I get a couple minutes of free time.
uhm..
pineapples (I need a better way to end these aa)

i was watching @jamesartsystuff playing donkey kong games with his buddies on youtube and at some point they brought up an idea for a new donkey kong game where its an open world game and the gameplay is similar to Shadow of the Colossus where DK climbs on the bosses and beats the shit out of them Jungle Beat style
also been brain storminga bit and thought, what would it be like if the game had a more realistic setting? like a beautifully detailed layout of the large areas DK explores in, kinda like what they did with Sonic Frontiers almost. they did also sort of did that with Super Mario Odyssey, like the trees in that one grassy level and that t-rex holy shit lol i think it would be amazing if DK was given the same treatment and you know if Nintendo is able to make a game like that i would 100% be down for it SIGN ME DAFUQ UP so i decided to draw a little concept art of what that would be like, for example this giant worm boss inspired by Twin Mold from Majora's Mask, DK can climb on its spikes to reach its face and he can take out its eyes with rapid fire punches TAKE NOTES NINTENDO

The Arcade Games Of 1980 #9 - Crazy Climber
Now, I was originally to put my Checkers review here, but today, something amazing happened. I beat one of the bullshittiest unfair games there is in all of gaming. At least so far. So that's what we're gonna discuss while it's still fresh on my mind.
Whereas Rally-X was the game I hated to like, I *really* like to hate this one. In the game, you climb with some dude who looks like 18-Volt from WarioWare and have to avoid all kinds of obstacles to get to the top of 4 buildings total. The first 3 stages all introduce some extra mechanic that's increasingly hard to avoid, while the 4th and final stage before looping is more or less a 'worst of' with the obstacles they chose.
Stage 1 introduces closing windows, the bird who seems to have a particularly bad case of stomach trouble, the dudes who throw flower pots on your head and a very odd looking King Kong knockoff. Stage 2 adds girders into the mix, my worst enemy, as well as these 'helpful' balloons that barely bring you further in the stage, and a Nichibutsu sign that goes effin' wild and can electrocute you if you're exposed to it's loose wires for too long. Stage 3 has one new addition in the falling signs that conveniently tell you what game you're playing. They can be placed in even more evil ways than the girders and become completely unavoidable at very final stretch of the final stage. See what I mean with unfair?
Nichibutsu decided to be additionally clever by introducting a completely new control scheme to coincide with this new genre of game. You control each arm of your climber guy individually and that means you have to push the joysticks in their right directions so you can go up another floor. It's shaky in execution as i've had several of my inputs taken away, but I much prefer it over having the same old same old done poorly.
If there's any game I wanna compare this to, it's Getting Over It. Extremely frustrating whilst also giving you significant reasons to come back to it to see if the odds play into your favor THIS time. And so I did. For several weeks. I'm done now and I did it legit. That's worth taking to my grave.
The Verdict
Graphics (9): Extremely good for the time. The climbing genre appears to be a completely new concept in gaming and would rarely be revisited later. Ya got a large variety in enemies that all look significantly more detailed than most other games, and ooze personality even if there's not something in the way of named characters. The helicopter, the balloon, even the climber himself, it's all of the utmost quality one can ask for. With the exception of the crazy ape, he's creeping me out with his red eyes and scrungly face. Donkey Kong he ain't. Aside from some minor graphical glitches and the title screen being very whatever, this is close to the peak as to what you can expect from a 1980 title.
Sound (7): One look at the developer would scare the shit out of anyone in the know. Nichibutsu, or Nihon Bussan as it was still called at the time, broke my hearing with their last outing, Moon Cresta. Sincerely awful, droning, weirdly pitched sounds were what held the game back from taking the glove to Space Invaders. But there was potential in that it was very varied in it's awfulness. And that potential gets utilised here! Mostly.
Most events of the game have their own little jingle or noise to coincide with their appearance. The animals and balloon have music, there's a tune at the start and end of each stage. These are actually great, how they managed to get the Pink Panther theme for the ape, I wouldn't know. The climber himself has a handful of voice clips that differ depending on when you're playing the US version or the original. As i've mentioned in the King & Balloon review, neither version is intrusive in the slightest with them. In fact, all of this combined makes me feel i'm playing a 30s cartoon. Kinda awesome!
What isn't awesome are the final remains of the Nichibutsu earsplitters. The girders drop down with quite possibly the WORST choice of sound effect they could've done. It's the type of cartoony shit you'd expect, ya know, something that lowers in pitch as it goes, only it's pitched SO highly and repeats itself SO frequently that it cracks the praise i've otherwise had in half. I can't ignore it either, these girders are *everywhere* from the second stage onwards. You were so close to making the perfect audiovisual experience, guys!
Fun Factor (6): Speaking of girders... fuck 'em in general. And fuck the Crazy Climber sign as well while we're at it. If flower pots sometimes not allowing you to keep balance by holding down on the joysticks wasn't enough, neither of these allow you to survive in general unless you get very lucky with the former. There's also the windows that conveniently seem to shut down in front of you on the thinner parts of the building. You have to anxiously wait for those to open, while there's always a chance the window you're hanging onto closes as well.
No, this game is not for the impatient. Yet still! I can't help myself with continually trying over and over again. It's THRILLING alright. First game in a while that got me sincerely anxious and determined to pull through and stick it to the man. Figuring out a new strat or sidestepping just a little bit faster so I would have more lives remaining at the later death traps, it's that kinda trial and error that would make arcade games increasingly awesome. Lastly, it helps that the game is nice enough to remove the next few floors worth of traps if you die, meaning you are rarely ever completely blocked from progressing. I am not gonna give a high score for obvious reasons, but I can't help myself with letting it get a pass. It sets a very intriguing precedent.
Longevity (7): 4 stages is not a lot, yet they're gruelling and lengthy enough that it feels like a substantial game for the time. More disappointingly(!), once you beat them, the game essentially resets with your data still intact. There's no reason to play past that point unless you wanna max out the score or somethin'. Please do not attempt that. I would've enjoyed a nod that you did so well to come that far by tweaking the existing stages juuuust a tad. Then again, it would've made my victory feel a lot more hollow. Maybe it's for the best not to let this experience drag more.
In Conclusion

A Mario Obsessed Person's Ramblings on the New Mario Movie Trailer
Here's my thoughts/analysis on the trailer! It's kinda long-winded...
Okay so off the bat let’s talk about the parts before the trailer itself.
The put a lot of praise on Anya (and imo it seems warranted); They seem very confident that she’s done super well with playing the character she’s supposed too in the right way (I know they did same some similar things about Chris Pratt but I think she’s definitely doing better.)
Seth’s bit had me rolling a bit because his entire segment is exactly what Chris Pratt wanted his to be; Seth talks about how he’s loved Nintendo for ages, but actually makes more obscure references (+ gets his facts right) and presenting actual evidence in the form of his (very cute) dog Zelda. Plus he doesn’t seem to hesitate nervously.
But, I digress, going into the actual trailer—
Tumblr media
I’m loving this interpretation of where the original Donkey Kong games fit into the lore. It manages to harken back to the “stage play” of Mario Bros. 3, and gives a pretty good reason for how it all fits together.
I’m very curious about the larger setting. At first I thought it was Sarasaland (or maybe the temple from Origami King), but evidently it’s the kingdom Donkey Kong comes from (Donkey Kong’s Country?). Which, as far as I know, isn’t really a concept that’s been explored—we only know like, a couple dozen Kongs in total, but this shows a few hundred at least.
Tumblr media
Is Cranky Kong the ruler of this kingdom? Or is he just preceding over the matches in the coliseum? I’m not as well versed in the DK side of Mario lore, but he’s usually just the parental figure in most games, right? He’s definitely never been the ruler.
Why are Mario, Peach, and Toad (evidently the three-man band of the movie) here? Is this some kind of negotiation? Mario puts on a show for the citizens and then he’ll provide them with something they’re after?
Pauline is shown in one of the posters, I wonder if she’s somehow still connected to DK in some way?
Tumblr media
Moving onto the Next scene—assumably this is inside Bowser’s Moving Castle we are familiar with from the first trailer.
I find it interesting that Koopa’s are the main troop shown—it’s not a weird pick, but I expected more Goombas than the eight (I counted) total shown in this shot. But I do appreciate the diversity of troops shown regardless; Koopas, Red Koopas, Paratroopas, Goombas + a Goomba stack, Buzzy Beetles, Swoops, Spinys, Priahnah Plants, Bob-Ombs, Sledge Bros, and Shy Guys, and even a Snifit!
Also a big fan of all the personality in this shot—The animation style really works.
Tumblr media
I’m not gonna make this about Bowuigi I swear
I’m loving the characterization we’re getting here.
Luigi’s still his generally nervous self, but I appreciate that he seems to be holding it together better than he does in some of the games. He’s going along with listening to Bowser’s monologue and trying to avoid saying anything that would upset him.
Bowser’s motivations surprise me a bit just because it doesn’t seem to be related to kidnapping Peach at all—and, as we see, she definitely isn’t kidnapped (seems like Luigi is filling the damsel role instead). He just wants to rule the world. Pretty stereotypical for a movie, and not a new thing for Bowser by any means, but still interesting none the less that they didn’t go the classic mario route.
I assume the magic around Luigi is Kamek’s doing—the blue and pink color scheme and the fact that Kamek isone of the only major magic users at Bowser’s disposal (and the only one we know is in the movie thus far).
Bowser seems to think being a human (not a Homo Nintendonius or whatever) is significant enough that it’s part of the reason for why Mario and Luigi should know each other, so wherever this is, it’s likely not somewhere on Earth, or at least our Earth. So what does that mean for Peach? She’s human, right? How’d she get here?
Tumblr media
I love every Toad in this shot! Their bowties are so cute. There are Peach’s advisor’s right?
Unsurprisingly, with how inconsistent Mario geography is, this looks like no existing world map from any of the games. Though that doesn’t mean there’s nothing of note!
We’ve got most of what looks like a classic set of world themes here;
Lava/Bowser’s Kingdom at the top. Not much to make out other than the grounded Castle that on the north side.
The Snow Kingdom, where the penguins were. Now taking on more of a Bowser-fitting appearance, only recognizable from the small sliver left open and the shape of the now-burnt castle. Is that actually what that kingdom looks like now? Bowser really left a mark.
The jungle kingdom. It looks like Bowser’s headed that way next. That temple looks very significant—the head looks like it could be a Koopa… or a Yoshi? Maybe that’s the new iteration of Yoshi’s Island? There’s only really on brief shot that shows anything that could be there, and it does only have Yoshis in it, so...
The one to the right of the mushroom Kingdom looks like the athletic/sky themed location. This one does get shown later, I’m pretty sure, in the scene with the Cheep Cheep near the end. Not much else to say.
Lastly, the Mushroom Kingdom. We all know the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach’s castle looks pretty standard, though the huge water feature behind it stands out quite a bit. The Mushroom Kingdom also seems quite sizable compared to the other kingdoms as well.
Notably, there seems to be a lack of space for a “Water Level” themed kingdom, unless the beach on the Jungle kingdom is meant to be that?
Tumblr media
Is it a controversial take that I like Peach’s design a lot? It’s obviously re-stylized for the movie, but it still pretty close to looking like her! That’s her jumpsuit from the Kart games, right? Or at least something pretty close to it?
The paintings in the background obviously give 64 vibes, though I doubt they’ll be used in that way… maybe?
All the shots of the interior of Peach’s castle are very pretty, too. Love the color scheme a lot.
Toad’s weapon of choice being a frying pan is very funny. I wonder if they’ll give a reasoning for why this specific toad is relevant/unique.
Tumblr media
The toads are wonderfully expressive! I’m falling in love with the animation style very fast. (Also look at the Green one’s face. Look at it.)
Tumblr media
This. Is. So. Cool. It such a fun concept.
I wonder if they’ll bother to explain the whole “how does everything float” thing or if that’s just gonna be a part of the world.
Tumblr media
This shot is also just really pretty. All of the location design is very faithful to the series, and manages to find a pretty damn good middle ground between all of the games without it seeming disjointed.
The gag in this scene is very Illumination-esque, but I’m not mad about it. At least it’s not toilet humor.
Tumblr media
That courtyard is so pretty! It does kinda beg the question how anyone gets up or down from there easily, but that’s probably just a floating platform thing.
Toad Town (or at least, I assume it's Toad Town because it's in front of Peach's Castle) being up the front of the cliff is a very fun design for it too.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t get a good shot of it, but the undersides of the mushrooms remind me of Super Show! which is not something I expected to get reminded of in this trailer.
Tumblr media
Obsessed with this design. They kept the shape but managed to actually make it look like a flower instead of a plastic toy. Is that a whole field of them in the background? Are they native to a specific place?
Tumblr media
That’s her 3D World fire flower design for sure. The transformation using the fire effect is very cool.
“There’s a huge universe out there. With a lot of galaxy. They’re all counting on us.” There’s no way this isn’t a reference to Galaxy. Is Bowser’s plan large-scale? The flying castle kinda fits with that, but Bowser’s castle being able to float isn’t exactly exclusive to that series.
Tumblr media
It’s the bois!!!! Look at them!!!
Tumblr media
Where is this?!?!?! It doesn’t really look like anything I’ve ever seen in a Mario title, except maybe Bowser’s Kingdom in Odyssey, but that’s clearly not what it is.
The ‘tubes’ look very similar to Kamek’s magic from earlier…
The fact that this is shown during the “Whole Universe” quote does feel like it’s significant too.
Tumblr media
DK joins them at some point. Was that why they were competing in the first scene?
As far as I can tell with all the Kart-focused shots, all the other riders are also Kongs. I was hoping I’d be able to spot some other cameos, but unfortunately not.
Final Thoughts
First, I’ve gotta quickly address Mario’s voice, and… I honestly hate it less than I did in the first trailer? I think? Maybe I’m just getting used to it. It kinda doesn’t even sound like Chris Pratt in some of the scenes, plus we do get some more classic Mario lines (“Wahoo!” and “Let’s’a Go!”). He’s far more expressive than he was in the first trailer.
Obviously, it’s still not quite Mario, but in the context of the other voices, it honestly kinda fits. (I’d still rather it not be Chris Pratt at all, of course, but I’m starting to think the clips they gave of his lines in the first trailer we’re just unfortunate choices.)
Past that, I honestly think this looks super good. The small references, all the details, it all gives me faith that Shigeru managed to shake something good out of Illumination. It really does seem like they’ve put a whole lot of care into making the story interesting without it just being the Standard Mario Package™, especially with the bits and pieces from various games (Classic Donkey Kong’s level design, Karts from Mario Kart, etc… there’s even a shot with the turn-blocks that replace bricks in Super Mario World!). The animation, the voice acting, it all seems amazing.
April 7th can’t come soon enough.

This is a bit of a tangent from the liveblogging but I was watching this guy play every Sonic game-- and he likes to voice act when games don’t have any VA work of their own
So for the Olympic games series whenever hed voice Donkey Kong he’d do this chuckle and people in chat would be like ‘why are you voicing him like that’ and he was like ‘He’s gonna be voiced by Seth Rogan so I’m doin that kinda voice’ (this was months before the movie came out)
And it is KILLING me that he had that chuckle down bc now I’m hearing the same one from DK in the movie
Hes just like that huh SHDGSHDH

Opinions on The Super Mario Bros. Movie teaser
Tumblr media
Ok so, I never spoke publibly anything regarding this movie is gonna be a thing, nor keep super tuned with every news regarding it, but I had my doubts ever since a heard Nintendo confirmed they are collabing with Illumination do an animated Mario movie. I’m a big fan animation since I was a kid. So even tho I only fully watched 6 of the 12 movies Illumination currently as I’m speaking has realised, I have over the years formed my opinions about the studio itself and have heard others opinions about their movies. And mine is not different from everyone else. I don’t find none of their movies bad but they do feel very..... hit or miss. They always do a very good job on the visuals and animation but the writing and jokes always fell unappealing. So outside from Despicable Me 1, which is the only movie from them I like a lot, I find most of their movies very uninteresting.
As for the Super Mario series, it’s tied with Donkey Kong as my favorite video game franchise of all time. It was (and still is) a big part of my life as a gamer. So at the time I found out Nintendo was producing another attemp of a Mario movie after years in collab with Illumination I got a little worried. But of course, I and everyone else would only be sure to get to our conclusions once a trailer was launched. And yesterday was finally the day.
So now time to give a few of my opinions:
Character Designs and Visuals
Honestly, I feel the same with every character. They feel weird due to some design choices and a few details on proportions in comperison to their original designs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But despite that, they're WAAAY far from being bad designs or being on the same level of "ugly Sonic". In fact, I actually liked the designs and I'm starting to get used to them. I like a lot how they are so expressive and faithful to the original designs. Especially Bowser. He’s still my favorite design.
(Also, Bowser's design reminded me a lot of his design in SSB4 and SSBU)
Tumblr media
The Writing
Can’t say too much because not much of the writing has been show but some of the dialogue and jokes gave me the same vibes from the other Illumination movies’ writing. Just hit or miss. But really, there’s only been 4 jokes on the teaser so, I’m not gonna judge it fast.
The Voice Acting
Now for the aspect everyone was more worried about (myself included). The voice acting. I liked Bowser’s voice. Didn’t love it, nor I think if Nintendo attempted to make him speak fully sentences again in the games I would choose this voice, but at least fits the character. I’m kinda mixed with Toad’s voice. It’s not bad but I don’t think it really fits the character. And now the most controversial one, Mario.... I don’t like it at all. Like, I was already aware that he wouldn’t have his italian accent but like, no offense to Chris Patt, it doesn’t feel like he even tried to replicate that jolly tone Mario is known for. And it just makes me find even more stupid and sad that they didn’t put Charles Martinet in the role despite still being in the cast. Anyway, as for the rest of the characters I just felt it was mostly ok honestly. Kamek’s voice fits with him, very surprised the penguins appeared in the trailer and how they sound and even tho Luigi didn’t speak full sentences in that last scene he sounded a little like the original voice. So yeah, overall I found the voice acting very avarege. Definitly my least favorite aspect of the trailer.
I really want to say this too. I also watched the trailer dubbed in my home language (brazlilan portuguese) and I gotta say, the voice acting there was so better for me. They don’t sound 100% excatly like the voices from the games, but it fit the characters more than the US voices. They also feel more alive, expressive and the way they talk in certain scenes match more with how they are reacting in the animation. The guy who voiced Mario even did the italian accent.
I really hope they don't change the voices when the movie releases and I'm happy to know some people from other countries also liked the brazilian dub voice.
Conclusion
I think they should have showed more stuff in the trailer and I still have my worries regarding the orginal voice acting and the overall writing, But despite these, I actually think the movie looks promising. I’m very excited to see more of it. How the other characters will look like, which other characters will appear, the fanserve, who will voice who else in the brazilian dub, etc. As I’m writing this, it’s been one day since the trailer dropped and it still feels SO surreal this movie is actually a thing. I haven’t decide yet if I’ll watch it at the theaters or via streaming (pirated or not) but I really hope I'm gonna enjoy this movie when it releases.

guess who just watched the mario movie
Tumblr media
SPOILERS!!!!!
if you haven’t watched the movie yet, DONT READ THIS POST. but here’s a spoiler free review in a few words; good and simple movie. 10/10.
before we start, i laughed over the fact that right after the little mermaid live action trailer, they show dreamworks’ upcoming movie; teenage kraken ruby gilman and HAAAOOOO my god i was laughing because guess what the antagonist of the movie is; a mermaid, looks exactly like ariel. 😭😭💀💀
okay lets get to the movie now. the dude that plays the arcade when the brothers see their plumbing ad on tv in the pub, is who i like to call “the demo super mario” because he’s the guy who’s in the donkey kong barrel game, yet i think in an interview with miyamoto, he said that jumpman and mario are the same person, but in this movie they are two seperate characters. so thats interesting. also i think that spike guy looks similar???
missed opportunity for bowser to throw one of the penguin babies off a cliff /j (if you know you know)
JACK BLACK. I LOVE YOU. YOU WERE PERFECT FOR BOWSER. PERFECT CHOICE TEAM. 🤧🤧
i feel like chris pratt actually starts to fit mario’s “normal” voice now with luigi (keegan michael key) like…no hate, but idk its like it fits mario only if he’s with luigi
LITTLE MAC IN THE PICTURE FRAMES
the amount of kids laughing in my theatre because the dog went ham on luigi and mario. 💀
OKAY, bowuigi aside, CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY REMOVE THEIR GLOVES IN THE MOVIE. Like not to be dramatic but…eh..i feel weird and idk how to explain, at least they didnt give them fingernails but- you know the weird feeling?? where you see a character without their iconic gloves??? yeahhhh-
so they have a family, cool. i swear their parents look similar tho, and the mum sounds similar as well…idk and i probably forgot the voice actor’s name but if anyone knows reblog this post if you want
this movie made princess peach a W. BIG W if you will (not the store). rahhh idk why but i was expecting a daisy cameo from this movie but im fine without that
THE FACT THAT THEY ADDED THE DK RAP!!!! unfortunately it was only the start of it but REJAHSHAH i had to sing along
ALSO, diddy, dixie, chunky and CRANKY? you see guys, this is the actual movie that really stays true to their source material.
also missed opportunity for chunky’s death /joke
Idk why, but i thought they were gonna acknowledge or reference a meme of mario in some form in the movie, just like how in the sonic movie sequel they referenced sanic.
from an avid mario kart player that only plays with their family, RAHHHH the mario kart segment made me so HAPPY. actually this whole movie made me happy
the amount of leitmotifs i was able to identify…this movie’s ost is A BANGER. and yes, i will talk about peaches soon dont worry
the animators and artists of this movie deserve a raise, BIG RAISE. they really made the average mario kart race as actual 150cc (thats the cc i normally play on)
im kinda happy that they made the blue shell a character lol and they ended up actually acknowledging that WE CANNOT EVER ESCAPE FROM THE BLUE SHELL
idk the name of the super mario galaxy blue luma star…but i love them, i love how they made them, a cute thing, spit out existential shit, like, that’s me! im the blue star! no i didnt voice act in the movie but this blue luma star is literally me‼️
HOLY SHIT, the fact that they made the terrifying-ass eel monster from sm64 as a minor character in the movie. RAAAGHHHH so much heart was poured in this movie. if i were to choose a movie that did well because they stayed true to their source material, it’d be “mario movie > sonic movie” PERIOD
i mean, they could do a little better on the plot and pacing, because the pacing is a little FASTER than the average splatoon pace lol
the fact that they made kamek (called him lamek bc i forgot his name) dress up as peach when bowser was practicing his wedding shit….🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈-
PEACHES TIME. jack black ABSOLUTELY SLAYED AS BOWSER. AND BOWSER SLAYED TOO HARD IN THIS MOVIE.
peaches peaches peaches peachespeaches peaches peaches peaches peachespeaches I LOOOVVE YOOOOUUUUUUUU-
the jokes coming in, for the dirty mouths it kinda sounds like bowser’s singing “bitches” instead lol 💀
“sorry, the princess is in another castle.” “what if she says no?” IM DYING 😭😭😭💀 ESPECIALLY “THE PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE” ONE 😫😫😫💀💀💀 kinda happy they added that *wheeze*
okay, if anyone dont know who ludwig von koopa is (the name on the piano), its one of bowser’s koopalings (his minions that are the same species as him, bowser junior is his only son, thats it)
anyways. bowser’s marriage hat is the one from super mario odyssey i think! bro how much references are in this movie? yes.
holy shit peach backstory real. she was just a human baby that somehow ended up in the untouched pipe system and went where she is now.
speaking about peach, im so glad that SHE literally slayed in this movie. this wasnt the first time she broke her damsel in distress role tho, idk aside from the smash games i think there was one canon mario game where she broke her typical role..idfk i forgot the game but i swear she girlbossed in another game aside from fighting in smash bros!
missed opportunity for the brothers to do the mario at the end of the movie /j (if you also know then you also know)
seth rogen ALSO SLAYED as donkey kong. like PERFECT voice for a character that doesnt speak english. **chefs kiss**
expect a part two yall. really tired at the time of writing this final dot point but this movie was fire🔥. and yes more references that I pointed out will also be included.

Right now my mind is full of Donkey Kong. I want a new game so bad but I don't want it to be like the last two, they're good and Tropical Freeze is especially full of genius level design and beautiful scenery and inventive level tropes. But they also feel like they're missing something from the Rare era, and I don't just mean the Kremlings and Animal Buddies that aren't Rambi.
Like is anyone else kind of tired of the cutscenes where characters just kind of grunt and make breath noises and varying facial expressions at each other? They did that in the first cutscene of Luigi's Mansion 3 as well and it was fucking goofy and not in a fun way. But Tropical Freeze had that through out the whole thing, the only dialogue was in the shops. You don't get good lines like how K Rool's wife is going to kill him for using her best pots and pans to build the Khaos robot with that...
Also there's not enough shitty industrial looking stuff in these games. DK was all all about that contrast between beautiful nature and dirty unnatural stuff. It was like Star Wars in that the tech was always kinda shitty and held together with paper clips and shit. All 3 SNES games had something like this and K. Rool's tower in DK64 was complete trash that needed constant trouble shooting, not to mention that factory level full of defective goods. I always loved how the Kremlings ( as well as Gruntilda ) seem to be cheapskates with their factories and super weapons, it's never some sleep marvel movie technology, it's like... Toyota or something, lmao
And DK's friends not being power ups and being legit alternate playable characters would be nice, they just need to give DK something that makes him attractive to play as over the other Kongs. I know DK will never be the same as it was when Rare was developing the games but I do wish it at least resembled it a little more... Resemblance to Rare or not, I just want more DK. I'm tired of the wait. Really hope somebody is doing something with DK if retro is busy with Metroid. The rumor on the vine is that Nintendo EAD is doing something but I don't really buy that.

Kirby and the Unforgotten Brand
*played in March 2022, Written in October 2022
"Despite Kirby only dipping his toes into 3D game play with spin offs, the pink puff ball manages to score a perfect 10 as he launches from the diving board and into the deep end with unparalleled grace. This feels like a Kirby game. It's near exactly what you'd expect Kirby in 3D to be. Sure there's a limitation every now and then, but those limits only improve the game and I wish the 2D games would take notes from it. Though I would be fine if we don't see a 2D one for a while as I'm confident in saying that this is the best Kirby game. In retrospect, transitions from 2D to 3D aren't really that hard to pull off. Sonic 3D Blast is kinda rough, Donkey Kong 64 looks like a nightmare, but the rest of them are either lateral moves or part of franchises that are already bad. But when you look at the gold standards like Metroid Prime or Mario 64 and compare them to the games that came before, it's clear that the conversions aren't 1:1. Mario 64 is structurally unrecognizable from Mario World. Metroid Prime is paced far slower than Super Metroid. Ocarina of Time heavily templates a Link to the Past, yet uses a completely different philosophy when it comes to combat due to Z targeting. There's always some compromise that has to be made to account for the extra dimension, and every platformer and adventure game had no choice but to comply. Kirby on the other hand, kneels to no one. It took 2 decades but when he made the switch he did it on his terms. Kirby remembers to Stay Kirby and ends up being the best version of himself in the end."
This is what I wrote before I sat down and played Kirby’s Blowout Blast. That game is Kirby's 3D debut and the world needs to deal with it and give proper respect. The 2.5D games don't count. Air Ride doesn't count. This definitely counts though. While basically every other statement I still agree with, to say Kirby came out the gate with flawless 3D execution is incorrect. Blowout Blast is a short but solid platformer that focuses on Kirby's capacity to suck and blow. It's essentially a ‘What If Kirby's Dream Land was in 3D’. You fight the same bosses, it's a budget title, you have no abilities, score is counted, there's a hard mode. The level design philosophy of Dreamland isn’t completely congruent but it still feels like a real game and certainly has more content. It might lack the soul of a full fledged entry, but it put the work in. It’s not like it’s a tech demo or something. Kirby 3D rumble, the sub game included in Kirby Planet Robobot, is the tech demo. This is the full game resulting from it.
So Kirby and the Forgotten Land is not Kirby's 3D debut. It's his first 3D adventure. The gap in quality and content between Blowout Blast and Forgotten Land is as much if not more than the gap between Kirby’s Dreamland and Kirby’s Adventure. So I want to point out the contributions Blowout Blast has made. The perfect game feel of Forgotten Land is 90% due to Blowout Blast nailing movement and physics so hard. The only major improvements were the camera control. The bones of the gameplay were developed in the Robobot Sub Game, expanded on in Blowout Blast, and perfected in Forgotten Land. This is the true lineage of this game. OK, now that props have been properly distributed, I will make it very clear that Forgotten Land is still extremely impressive.
Forgotten Land is a Kirby game but they simply added another axis. I can easily imagine a version of this game that is 2D and is perfectly fine. The only key differences would be the float wouldn't be as gutted so the verticality of the level design would be altered. I don't consider that as something lost when coming to 3D as it allows more puzzles where gaining height is the goal. It's something they probably could have executed in 3D, but it was more interesting not to. I legit would not mind Kirby getting a jump nerf in 2D. 2 of my favorite Kirby games are Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Kirby’s Epic Yarn, games where gravity actually exist at all times.
What I find interesting about this regular Kirby game with an added axis is that the gameplay just inherently works better. For one, the Platinum Dodge just feels great and the fact that the direction you dodge in matters makes it much more interesting than what it would be on a 2d plane. Having no double tap to run and just having running be the standard is a godsend. The most important upgrade to the shift to 3D is made to the power ups. While you have less abilities that can technically do less, the 3D environment gives them more room to stretch out. There's more directions to head in, so mobility is more important. Enemies can come a from more angles so defensive power have more value. Aiming is now more complicated so ranged abilities are allowed to do damage. The added inherent complexity of transitioning to 3D means power ups don't have to have that complexity injected into the move set in order to set themselves apart.
Hot take. I kinda hate how each of Kirby’s forms is its own character with fighting game inputs. It makes sense for when you are permanently playing as that character, but when it's temporary, it's utterly annoying and it has been since Kirby Super Star. In Kirby’s Adventure, you lose a power up and it's no big deal. It was just one thing that replaced your action button. They kinda acted as an alternative to the suck and blow. It didn’t feel any worse than losing a Fire Flower in a Mario game. But in Super Star and the rest of its kind, base Kirby is ass and the most boring way to play by comparison. There, the abilities aren't just power ups, but better characters you play as. And when you get hit by a stray attack and that ability flies into the unknown, you are forced to not play as your favorite character and are now low tier trash.
I despise this. It's not that big of an issue during boss fights really because there are patterns and it's easy to get your power back usually. But in levels, it's the worst. They completely change the pace of your progression through the stage if you choose to chase it and the obstacles of the level itself may make retrieval impossible. Sure, you can pick up another power, but here's the other issue: I don't know how to play as this character. It's never intuitive with these ‘Super Star’ styled games. I don't know what's context reliant; I don't know what inputs I might do accidentally; I don't know what attacks are useless and which ones are good. Why should I take the time to lab a character when I will probably just lose that character mid game? It requires me to have knowledge of every form just so I don't get pissed off in my regular playthrough. It is these two reasons why getting hit in a modern Kirby game feels worse than getting hit in most games. Until now.
Power ups are back to the Gameboy Advance days. Games like Nightmare and Dreamland and Amazing Mirror where one power up does only like 3 things tops outside of a few occasions. All Powers are easy to pick up, play, and put down. I get fire and I know exactly how to use it proficiently. Not expertly. But proficiently. Each power up is simple to use, but has its own niche where it thrives in. It's not like how some games have a roster of completely trash abilities, they're all good.
• Fire is now the best hit and run option due its added Damage over Time Burn effect and the fire dash move adding instant horizontal mobility.
• Ice is a good defensive copy ability, but also has rewards aggression due to it’s frost build up effect. Ice also grants the capability to ice skate, making it perfect for traversing water surfaces.
• Spike is the other form I would say is inherently defense, but instead of rewarding aggression it rewards perfect spacing. Understanding the boundaries of your large hit box and the enemies is the key to it’s effectiveness. While Ice has mobility on the water, Spike is unparalleled for building momentum on the ground making sure you are both never defenseless and never in the same spot.
• Sword, As expected, is the ‘Do Combo’ copy ability. You're vulnerable due to being too close range, but the longer you're in danger, the faster you can obliterate whatever has the misfortune of being within your reach.
• Hammer on the other hand, is the 'Big Number' counter part to the Sword. It uses charge attacks with big wind ups to melt health bars instantly, so as long as you don’t get tagged on start up, everything in your path will be crushed
• Cutter is the perfect mid ranged copy ability. Ruining slow enemies with its Devil May Cry round trip throw while staying at a safe distance. But like always, it has a close ranged combo in it’s back pocket to use when necessary.
• Ranger is the perfect long range copy ability. You can stay as far away from enemies as you want, as long as your aim isn't shaky. With its charge ups, it effectively functions as a hammer you can throw, but doesn’t do as much damage, as it’s still not the hammer.
• Bomb I honestly never fucked with, but I can tell by the design it's the set up and pay off power. Stacking bombs in close proximity and timing the explosion to get giant Area of Effect damage is the idea here.
• Tornado is the best for just trashing fodder; getting rid of punk enemies as quickly as possible. It's also wonderful for just skipping large chunks of open area you come across. It's the filler annihilator.
• Drill is the safer, slower version of tornado. Most of the time you use it you can't get hurt by anything. If Ice and Spike are defensive, Drill ascends beyond that level by allowing true invincibility and complete control simultaneously. It's slow, but it's effective. I don't like using it really, but it's undoubtedly useful.
Even the meme abilities have their moments. Sleep is just ‘Rest’ from Pokémon and Crash is the win button as always, but when used with the copy ability level up system they evolve into a passive buff granting function and Timestop. Despite the page of power up break-downs I just finished doing, I haven’t even scratched the surface due to each one having 1-3 variations. The level up system is my favorite twist on power ups since Crystal Shards. I look back at Kirby Squeak Squad and acknowledge that among the many treasures you find in that game, the ability scrolls which act as unlockable super moves for your abilities, we're the only ones that stood out. Forgotten Land takes this idea a step further adding unlockable tiers of powers you can obtain through exploration and currency collection. Some of these higher tiers completely break the game and that's...that's pretty cool. I’m on board with giving the player the tools to bust open the game balance as long it’s something you have to earn.
Base Kirby does a decent amount of damage in this game and getting a power up isn't really a vertical upgrade. The game is designed around standard Kirby being a viable option to use in any situation. Some games make base Kirby far weaker than using a power up, some make the damage of shooting out an object so high that it's in some cases the best option. Forgotten Land has it's strawberry short cake and inhales it too. You can simultaneously have abilities be horizontal progression while also making them far stronger than the default state. Everything is equal more or less on the outset and then the player decides what is busted and what isn't. This allows for the maximum variance of play styles and I really want it in future games if we never get power combos back.
Along with the leveling system, the other new addition to the Kirby formula is Mouthful Mode. Mouthful mode is basically Kirby's take on the Captures in Super Mario Odyssey. Honestly, the difference in execution highlights exactly why this game is superior to that one. I tend to give Mario Odyssey a ton of crap even though I still like the game a lot (At least I think I do). But a major issue I have with it is its focus on quantity over quality. There are 900 collectibles, 50 Captures, and a dozen large open worlds to explore. The game rarely takes advantage of these features. Worlds have few interesting activities and landmarks, the collectibles have no value, and the Captures seldom are used to their full potential due to there being so many of them. In Forgotten Land, the game is smaller, but denser. There's an interesting design element around every corner of the levels and they constantly ask you to use your regular abilities and mouthful mode abilities in interesting ways. There are only like 12 mouthful modes but each one is used in an inventive puzzle or platforming challenge and demand more from you each time you use them. This game is so damn efficient. Nothing is extraneous, nothing is under cooked, it's so competently made. This is exactly how I felt playing Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom last year. Except this game is even more impressive.
These two additions along with the standard quality of music, level design, and aesthetic perfection seen in the more recent Kirby games was all it took to make this one of the best games of the year. I'm still reeling from the hype of the finale. I'm pining for DLC. Not extra levels per say, just more excuses to play this game again. Metroid Dread added multiple difficulty modes post launch and I would love this approach to be taken here. There are games that give you too little, in that they don't give you a satisfied experience. There are games that give you so much that you shudder at the thought of returning to them. Forgotten Land is a full package that I simply want to experience again in a different way. And of all the compliments I've given this game, that might have the most weight. I've played and beaten many Kirby games, but only completed a handful. This is one of them and it’s the only one I still viciously crave more of.

A mock up of what a NES/Famicon launch title of one of Nintendo's old arcade titles Helifire. Back before they hired artist and just used a close up of the game for the cover. The black box games were the style of box art used launch titles for the NES here in North America. The first box has the arcade logo while the second has a standard font like the one Nintendo used. Not a lot of people know about them but Nintendo did make a gaggle of arcade titles before & outside of Donkey Kong games (Block Fever,Monkey Magic, Head on N, They list goes on) unfortunately Nintendo didn't seems make console versions or re-releases of those early titles, and hasn't made very many reference or Easter-eggs to them either (the  most we got was Sheriff being an assist trophy in smash) which is why they fell into obscurity. From the research I did Nintendo's first big break was the Donkey Kong titles in both Japan & North America and they wanted to focus on what worked, however I feel like Nintendo could squeeze one or two of those old games as titles for their NES/Famicon which yea they honestly should have, they had so many titles they could have chosen from for an easy title to sell, like this one Helifire. Helifire was kinda in the same vein as a lot of other early 80's games, basically a variation on the Space invaders formula, move around the bottom of the screen & blast enemies up above you, the gimmick here is that enemies can come from the side of the screens. They game looks like a fairly fun time for an early 80's console game. Nintendo added an unreleased early 80's title called Sky Skipper to their Arcade Archives on the Eshop even the VS variations of NES games so I guess there is some hope we could see Helifire and some of the other forgotten pre Donkey Kong games.

Hello there and welcome to this year's Gaming Horrors in the Dimension of Spookiness where we conclude our history with the BloodRayne series. In 2005, BloodRayne the live action movie was released and, it wasn't very good. Part of that is because it was directed by... Uwe Boll! And, then Advent Rising came out the same year and it was disaster. Thus, leaving the BloodRayne series in limbo and being the main reason why it faded into obscurity. For many years, no new BloodRayne game was released. But, that was until in 2011, BloodRayne Betrayal was released and it took on a more 2D style thanks to WayFoward and Abstraction Games. I will be reviewing the Switch version which is also known as BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites. It is one of many versions of BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites. For a first time BloodRayne fan, it is hard to get used to the fact that you have to attack enemies before sucking their blood whereas in previous games, that wasn't needed. Terminal Reality also went on to develop the hugely successful and critically acclaimed game known as Ghostbusters: The Video Game. And, Majesco got out of bankruptcy thanks to the Cooking Mama franchise. So yeah, everyone has a happy ending here! BloodRayne Betrayal concludes the series following up on BloodRayne 2 and it is a 2D action game as opposed to the previous two games being 3D. It's kinda like the opposite of Super Mario 64 if you ask me.
Fun Fact #:1 Kagan was originally supposed to be portrayed by myself in-costume with a tux from a thrift store and a fake moustache. His backstory of him becoming fatter was supposed to be a nod to Blubberella and he would've also mentioned Blubberella as one of his kills. He would've slain her with the Sword of Nightmares which would've been an Adventure Force foam sword or a Nerf Vendetta Double Sword or whatever sword I would've gotten at the thrift store. But, due to time constraints and the fact that I don't travel to Value Village as often as I used to, I had to scrap that part and make Kagan into Kagan the Conquerer with his battle axe. And yes, the video itself was rushed to meet a deadline.
Fun Fact #2: I used Uberduck.ai for the Lori Loud voice due to time constraints. I could've commissioned VA work from MacStarVA to do Lori's voice. But, this video had to be rushed to meet a deadline and I used Uberduck.ai for Lori's voice instead. Believe me, she would've done an excellent job voicing Lori in this vid even if she is an unseen character.

everything you need
you're not enough, you never were. but it's ok. because you find someone who thinks you are.
kuroo x reader + kenma x reader
too young. that was all it was, really. you were too young. i mean, who really gets married at 20? well, you, i guess. you wished someone had stopped you. maybe it could have been kuroo. he was the one who made it worse, after all. but when he proposed, you were over the moon. because he wants you. he loves you. ha. now you're standing by where he proposed. leaning against the cold wall, you lose all the good memories you have of it. you run your fingers through the cracked plaster, frowning at everything you think of. but you don't run away because you know you can't hide. it's still there. this broken marriage. the love that was never real. you stay because you don't have anywhere to go. it's never gonna be the same. but now you can feel yourself slipping through the holes and imperfections of this... whatever this is. you don't know. you think too much. you think too little. not enough. at least, not enough for him. you have to go. go. go. go. he's not gonna stay for long. go first, or he will. then everyone will pity you. pity the poor soul that got divorced.
you stumble back at your shared house where he was never home. when he was? you try to ignore the faint smell of black opium. a scent that you literally hated. you glance over at the mirror. it's been so long since you've actually looked like yourself. you really should go. you haven't gone too far. maybe you can. your broken dream can still be saved! dreams of someone in love with you, someone loving you. maybe? go to bokuto. someone, just not kuroo.
but you know who you want. it's kenma. because it's always been him. and honestly? probably always will be. you miss when you and him would rage and hit each other with controllers. and try to cover each others eyes to get the other to miss. and both use donkey kong and just start smashing each other. because you could. and you felt alive with him. free, in a way like no one else could. and you were enough. and that was enough. for you, at least.
you could only imagine the surprise that was eminent on his face. well, actually you didn't need to. you were there, after all. it was pretty neat, actually. he done look like a confused waluigi. ' oh! y/n, come in.' his smile was still the same as ever, kind and genuine.. he extends his hand, expecting you to take it. you take one look at his outstretched hand, smile, push him aside and then run into his house. he huffs, ' and here i thought we were being mature adults.' ' as if you were mature.' 'yeah i am.' ' bitch please, you played rocket run until you were fifteen.' ' why are you exposing me?' you continued your play fighting, but, as all your other arguments ended, you were laughing your asses of. ' he grabs your hand and drags you to his room. ' yoo, dope setup dude.' ‘ i’ve been… working on it. hey, should I order some food?’ he’s always been so nice to you. ’ uh, sure.’ you were to busy inspecting the mess of tangled cords, seeing if you could fix it. were there… two plugs on one cord?
you flop down onto the bed. which was hard somehow. ' don't tell me you sleep on your gaming chair.' turns out he did. 'uh, i'll buy you a new one.' 'you got the money.' he looked at you, a grin slowly forming on his face. 'well, turns out that i'm a famous streamer with over three million followers purely in japan.' 'cool.' you looked unbothered, still scrolling through your feed. he walks over to the bed and sits down. 'oh yeah this bed is hard. anyway what are you doing?' he tries to steal a glance at your phone. 'nope. not until you by me a new mattress. do you expect me to sleep on your chair too?' 'you're sleeping over?' 'yeah. i kinda ran away.' he looks at you, but there's something different about him. something more serious. 'you ran away?' more concerned, you think. 'don't tell kuroo!' 'but he-' 'just... don't, ok?' he hesitates. you look at him and raise an eyebrow. he closes his eyes and exhales. 'ok.' he never told anyone. kuroo never noticed. and you saw him, when he was out with them. you didn't care, of course. you'd rather this than him try to find you.
besides, you had kenma. also your new mattress. everything you need.

Smash Universe Experience : Updated
So one of those things that will randomly poke at my brain sometimes, felt like looking at what history I have with the different major “universes” of Smash Bros. Ultimate, now that the DLC is fully done.  So here we go! :
Super Mario : Pretty solidly a lot of experience with Mario and various spinoffs.  I will say I don’t have as much experience with the RPG side of things, though I have played the original Super Mario RPG, Superstar Saga, and Super Paper Mario.  Mostly I go for the platformers.
Yoshi : Pretty good overall experience I would say?  I do have Yoshi’s Story on WiiWare, but haven’t really played much of it.  I have however played Yoshi’s Island to 100% completion, same for Woolly World, and off and on poke at Crafted World.
Donkey Kong : Kind of middle of the road here I guess?  I’ve played the original arcade games, DKC 1 and 2 (technically I TRIED 3, but couldn’t really get into it), and Tropical Freeze, which I really should play more of.  I haven’t played any of the spinoff games though like Jungle Beat or what have you.  Also never played DKC Returns, though I’ve heard good things.
Legend of Zelda : Pretty solid experience, I would say I’ve played most of the series.  Notable exceptions, I never had a CDi so I never played.... those....  I’ve never played Spirit Tracks (I tried Phantom Hourglass, and just really hated the control scheme, got too in the way of my enjoyment).  I do have Skyward Sword now on Switch, need to get on that.
Metroid : Again, played most of these titles.  Notable exceptions, I never played Metroid Prime Pinball or Hunters, Other M, or Federation Force.  I should maybe try Samus Returns again sometime now that I have the experience of playing Dread, but... oof.  Still REALLY hate the melee counter.
Kirby : I’ve likely missed a few here and there, mainly spinoffs, but I think I’ve played most of the main series games?  I never played Rainbow or Canvas Curse, Mass Attack, or a lot of the “mini” games like Fighters.  Kind of maybe want the one on Switch though.  I have pre-ordered the new Kirby game though, looking forward to it.
Star Fox : Fairly little experience, I’ve only played the original and 64.  I do have access to 2 given SNES Online though.  Never played Assault or Zero.  It’s one of those series, I kinda like it, but I’m also terrible at it, haha.
Pokémon : .....Hello, my name is Roahm Mythril, and I’m a Pokéholic.  So yeah, big series for me.  Most of the more recent games, admittedly I kinda just play for what’s there, which.... really hope Scarlet and Violet don’t feel as rushed and half-finished as Sword and Shield did.... and still pretty disappointed by the DP remakes...  Anyway, I’ve played most of the games in the series.  Again, mostly a few select spinoffs I missed, like Cafe Mix (don’t really like using touch controls on Switch), Unite, and...... I can’t even remember the name, that early DS racing game?  Dash, was it?  Anyway excuse me while I go back to obsessively working on Legends Arceus research tasks.
F-Zero : I think the SNES original is the only one I’ve played...?  I at least don’t THINK I ever played the ones on GBA or N64, nor the Gamecube one, which... I legit kinda want, haha.  Even knowing it’s hard as heck, I kinda want to try it.
Mother : Minimal.  EarthBound is the only one I ever played, and just couldn’t really maintain interest in it.  It doesn’t help that for the most part, turn based RPGs aren’t really a go to genre for me, nothing against anyone else enjoying them though, I just have a hard time getting into them myself.
Ice Climber : I mean.... yeah, I played the one game, even on the channel as a joke once.  Not really much else to say on this one, haha.
Fire Emblem : Only one I’ve ever played barely counts, as it was Fire Emblem Warriors, haha.  Turn based strategy is another genre that I don’t often play admittedly.  Games like Advance Wars or Wargroove, they can keep me interested for a short time at best (which.... may or may not have to do with how quickly I have to deal with Fog of War because really screw that mechanic...).
Game & Watch : I don’t think I ever had a legitimate actual Game & Watch, but I did play basically all the Game & Watch Gallery games.
Kid Icarus : I’ve played all three games, though I never was able to finish the Game Boy game, Myths & Monsters I think it was called?  There was a particular boss where my game always crashed.
Wario : A few holes here and there, never played Master of Disguise or Wario World.  I think I’ve played most of the rest, both on the Land and Ware sides.
Pikmin : I’ve played all the Pikmin games I’m pretty sure, unless you count the Pikmin minigame in Nintendo Land?  I haven’t really considered that for any of the other universes, but never played that.
R.O.B. : Considering he only ever had two games to his name, 50%.  I’ve played Gyromite, but not Stack Up.
Metal Gear : Extremely minimal.  I played the original NES game myself, and watched my uncle play the original Metal Gear Solid, but that’s about it.
Sonic the Hedgehog : Pretty solid experience.  I didn’t play either of the Wii “Storybook” games, nor Sonic 4.  Also missed most of the handheld ones, I played the first Sonic Advance, and felt like I couldn’t see enough at one time, so hitting enemies and traps felt pretty bad.  Also didn’t play Forces.  Don’t know how I feel about upcoming open world Sonic game...
Animal Crossing : I think the only Animal Crossing I’ve never played is Wild World?  I’ve played the original, City Folk, New Leaf, Happy Home Designer, Amiibo Festival, and New Horizons?
Mega Man : Well yes, very much so.  I’ve played at the very least all the Classic games, X1 - X5, all the MMBN games, Legends 1 (still want to give that one another try sometime), the first two Starforce games, and I think Zero 1 - 3?  Never played the ZX series at all.
Wii Fit : I’ve never played any of the actual Wii Fit games.  If you count things like Wii Sports, I at least played the original one of those?
Punch-Out!! : I played the NES one, Super Punch-Out!!, and Punch-Out!! Wii.  Never played the arcade one.
Pac-Man : Good experience here, mostly with the arcade games.  I’ve played a few offshoots like Pac In Time, Pac Attack, etc.
Xenoblade : Zero experience, I haven’t played any of the Xenoblade games.
Duck Hunt : I’ve played Duck Hunt, as well as a few other Zapper games like Hogan’s Alley and Gumshoe.
Street Fighter : Basically I’ve only played Street Fighter 2 Turbo on SNES.
Final Fantasy : I want to say I’ve only played 7 and 9, with more of an enjoyment of 9.
Bayonetta : I’ve played both and beaten them, and interested to see where things go with Bayonetta 3.
Splatoon : I’ve played 1, though only the single player content.  I do have 2 and need to go through that, just haven’t gotten around to it.
Castlevania : Quite a good bit of experience here.  There are some here and there I’ve never played, like I’ve never had access to the original Rondo of Blood.  Also never played 64, or the fighting game, which at the moment I forget what that’s called....  Was that Judgment?
Persona : 4 is the only one I’ve played.  Oh, wait, nevermind, I have played Persona 5 Strikers.  I would like to play the actual Persona 5, but don’t have a system that runs it.  Really not interested in 3 though for personal reasons.
Dragon Quest : I played a couple of the early NES entries, but never really could get too into them.  Again, turn based RPGs aren’t really a go to genre for me.
Banjo-Kazooie : I’ve played the original and Tooie, as well as the GBA game whose name I can never remember.  Grunty’s Revenge?  I’ve never played Nuts & Bolts.
Fatal Fury : I don’t think I’ve ever played any of the Fatal Fury series.  I’ve seen Terry in passing, but that’s about it.
ARMS : I’ve only played the demo, not the actual game.
Minecraft : Never played it, and admittedly don’t really have any interest in it.  More power to those that enjoy it though, just not really my kind of game.
Tekken : I don’t think I’ve ever played a proper Tekken game, but I have played Pokken if that counts.  Which it probably doesn’t if I had to guess, haha.
Kingdom Hearts : I’ve played 1 and 2, Chain of Memories, uhh.... number of days, Re:Coded, and a little of Dream Drop Distance.  I have Birth By Sleep, but never played it, as my PSP is currently in need of a new battery pack, basically all of that kind of battery I had did the “puff out” thing, so likely best not to chance using them.

Emerald Deceit
(This is a Yandere Kakyoin x Female Reader story!! I’m sorry if this is too OOC!
TW: !noncon!, !not canon!, delusional themes, mind/body control, oral (female receiving), breeding, kinda angst, creampie, etc..
Please don’t proceed if any of these themes are triggering!)
You were considered one of the popular kids in school. After all, your warm personality was very attractive. No matter who you spoke with, you always made them feel special.
Maybe, that’s what immediately drew Kakyoin in.
You were the only one who noticed he was missing, and once he returned from his trip to Egypt, you confronted him.
“Kakyoin, are you okay? You were gone for so long that I became worried.” The sincerity in your eyes warmed his heart. You, (Full name), were worried about him?!
“O-oh, yes. I’m fine, thank you for asking. I had some family issues, but they’re now resolved.” After that day, the two of you became friends. You tried your best to include him in your get togethers, which helped him grow out of his shell.
Not long after that, he became popular as well. Kakyoin was now known as the ‘shy popular kid.’ Many girls found him attractive, which was quite a shock. He didn’t know how to interact with them, so he enlisted the help of a certain French man.
Unfortunately, the red haired man was tricked into revealing his crush; you. Polnareff was practically vibrating with glee when he gave the younger man advice.
You showed Kakyoin attention, so you must like him.
But, you were playing hard-to-get.
The broad, white haired man made the mistake of giving him the advice of ‘stealing you away.’ Of course, he was speaking metaphorically, but the lavender eyed man took him seriously. He worked on his plan for weeks, making sure every detail was accounted for.
By this point, your class had graduated secondary school, making it easy for the red haired male to move out on his own (afterall, Joseph Joestar was happy to help him with his endeavours). He then enrolled into the same college as you, making the both of you grow closer than before. You now called him by his first name, Noriaki, and hung out with him by yourself.
This clearly means you like him too, right?
So, one day while the two of you were at his flat, he took it upon himself to confess his feelings.
`
You were currently kicking Noriaki’s ass at Donkey Kong, much to his amusement.
“Haha, look at that! I’m a Donkey Kong master!” While seated, you did a small happy dance, and shove at his shoulder good-naturedly. Your ethereal smile seems to light up the room, bringing a light blush to his seemingly emotionless face.
“So it seems,” He fiddles with his controller, “I thought my high score was impressive, but it seems I just suck at this game.” What was meant to sound like a joke landed flat, and a look of concern takes over your face.
“Oh no, I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings! How about I show you some hacks?” You squeeze his shoulder comfortingly, causing a small smile to grace his handsome face.
“It’s alright, (First name), my feelings aren’t too hurt,” You let out a sigh of relief, “But, I would like to take up your offer.”
The two of you play for a few more hours, until you take a break. Noriaki heads to his kitchen to grab a snack, and brings out a bowl of cherries, along with two cups of water. The tall man sets the snack and beverages on the coffee table, before turning to look at you.
“(First name), I wish to tell you something.” You tilt your head in confusion, but nod your head, prompting him to continue. He takes a deep breath, willing himself to continue, “I… I like you. I like you a lot. I know we’ve only known each other for a few years, but I would like to go out with you.” This came to you as a shock. Noriaki likes you? Since when?!
“Well, um, this is surprising,” You saw his expression fall, and you scramble to finish what you were trying to say, “I’m not saying this is bad! You’re very handsome, and you’re a very good person, but I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship right now. I want to focus on school and my career for now, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like you! I’d be happy to go out with you, it’s just, right now isn’t the right time.” What you said was true. You did like him, and he could tell by your solemn expression.
The lavender eyed man reaches an awkward hand out to place on your arm, a happy smile on his lips.
“That’s alright!” Your body visibly relaxes, “But, you don’t have to worry about that. If you’re with me, you don’t have to work at all. I’ll be more than happy to support you. Afterall, once I become a surgeon, we’ll be well off.” That statement triggers a feeling of fear inside you, but you keep a calm facade.
“I see, but I wish to pursue my dream, Kakyoin. If you wish to have a stay at home wife, you need to look elsewhere.” The air in the room changes, as the red haired man seems to become angry. His grip on your arm tightens, making you whimper in pain, “I’m sorry, but I wish to leave. You’re scaring me-” You suddenly couldn’t move or speak. It felt as if you didn’t have control of your own body. The look of innocent fear and confusion on your face sent an unknown feeling towards Noriaki’s cock, solidifying his adoration for you. No one else has made him feel this way, which makes you special.
The banged man proceeded to hold you in a tight hug.
“(First name), don’t be like that. I know this may be shocking, but I’m still your Noriaki. I’m still the man you love. If you put me above your so-called dream, you’d realise how happy we could be. You and I are perfect for each other; you’re the kind and sweet darling, while I’m the blunt and loyal husband. Doesn’t that sound so much better than (dream job)?” No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t move or speak, but the delusional man took that as a yes.
Without warning, he picks you up and heads to the master bedroom. He then lays you on his large mattress, and hovers above your paralysed frame. Two large hands caress your (skin tone) face as Noriaki looks down at you in fondness.
“Maybe if I show you how much I love you, you’ll realise that you need to be with me.” You scream internally when the scarred man starts to strip you. His caring eyes turn hungry once they see your bare skin, and he couldn’t help but let out an excited gasp, “You’re so beautiful.”
Once you’re completely exposed, he starts to undress as well. Kakyoin’s bulge looks huge in his forest green drawers, making you panic even more.
“I may not be very experienced, but I’ll try my best to make you feel good.” He clumsily bent both of your knees and spread them apart, exposing your pussy. You hear him gulp nervously, before he touches your clit with his pointer finger. Internally, you jolt at his touch, but physically, you remain motionless. Due to you being (unwillingly) compliant, he continues his assault.
Noriaki tentatively licks at your unprotected cunt, savouring your taste. His eyes roll back in pure pleasure, this is what he wanted for years.
After a few moments, he starts to eat you out like a man starved. The feeling of his tongue flicking deliciously over and in your pussy feels euphoric, causing a steady flow of arousal to flow onto the sheets below you. Abruptly, the red haired man shoves two fingers inside your tight cunt. If you could speak, you would’ve screamed out in pleasure.
The feeling of being stretched threw you over the edge, your first orgasm of the night ripping through you, which Kakyoin happily licks up.
“I think you’re ready for me, darling.” He uses his slick hand to stroke his painfully hard cock, before he guides it to your slick entrance.
Slowly, he pushes himself inside of you. You can feel every vein and ridge of his fat prick, as he fills you almost painfully. He’s thicker than he is long, but it feels amazing.
Once he bottoms out, he waits. Noriaki doesn’t want this to hurt, after all, this was supposed to be a new beginning for the both of you.
Though, you’re making it very hard.
Your tight walls knead his cock perfectly, forcing him to use every ounce of self control he has. But, he doesn’t have to wait for long. Hierophant Green gives him the go-ahead a few moments after he slips inside.
The lavender eyed man fucks into you slowly. His cock gently nudges your g spot with every thrust, making you tighten wonderfully.
“Oh God, you’re perfect for me,” He starts to pick up the pace to a medium speed, “How could you not want to be with me? I want to give you the world, (First name).”
Droplets of, what you think is sweat, drop onto your exposed form. Though, when you look up, you realise Kakyoin is crying.
“I can’t let you leave me! You’re different. You treat me well and I always want to be with you.” He fucks into even faster now, his cock throbbing with his oncoming release.
“But, because you don’t want to be with me, I have to make you stay. If we have a baby, you can’t leave.” That statement makes your heart jump into your throat. He can’t be serious! Is he crazy?
Your mind is screaming ‘no’ over and over again, but he can’t hear you.
Or maybe, he refuses to even hear what you have to say. Because, whatever he’s done to you has effectively halted your words and movements.
Not long after that thought, Noriaki stills. Hot cum floods into your cunt, his cock blocking it from leaving your abused hole.
He bucks into you a few more times, before pulling out. Thick rivulets of his seed pool out of your pussy, which he scoops up, and pushes back inside of you.
By this point, he beckons Hierophant Green out of your body, allowing you to curl into a ball and cry.
All Noriaki could think was that he did this for you. Everything was for you.
But, he couldn’t help but think he ruined his chance with you.
Hopefully, a baby would bring the two of you together.
If not, he didn’t know what to do to make you love him.
