Nah but it's so funny to me how Kiryu ugly sobs and screams his lungs out and cradles Tachibana so close in his arms and refuses to part with him even as his sister comes close to hold him during his death scene but with Yumi (who's supposed to be the love of his life apparently lmao) he doesn't even shed a single tear when she dies like ?????? Sir????

@ygoc-week - Day 6
(sooo i know free day is tomorrow's prompt but i didn't really have anything for today's. so i'm gonna do free day today and AU tomorrow if that's ok ;-;)
doing a general lore dump today!! i love rambling about Sylvester, so i thought it'd be fun to talk about a bunch of stuff i couldn't fit elsewhere. i need a bit of a break since i've been drawing nonstop all week. this isn't exhaustive by any means but i know for a fact it'll get long. Sylvester has been in development for like 2 years now and it shows.
i tried to organize everything in rough categories under the cut:
As a Signer Dragon:
like the rest of the Signer Dragons, Sylvester was created by the Crimson Dragon to serve it and the Signers. he participated in the Signer Wars of the past, fighting Earthbound Immortals by air and sea.
his main ability was producing electricity. the orange markings that ran down the sides of his body and tail gave off devastating electric shocks. additionally, he could fire great bolts of lightning from his mouth. he had a high degree of control over the strength of his electricity, but he could overwhelm his natural resistance and injure himself if not careful.
at first, Sylvester served faithfully like the other dragons. but he soon grew resentful of the cycle of war. his only purpose was to serve the Signers, fight, and then lie in wait until the next Signers were born thousands of years later. he desired more out of his life than simply being used as a weapon.
the Earthbound Immortals, feeding off his negative emotions, approached him with a deal. if he agreed to turn on the Crimson Dragon and help them defeat it, its death would break the cycle of war, thus freeing him from servitude. of course, this would mean sacrificing humanity's existence, but he valued humans very little. he was apathetic at best toward them. so he agreed.
when the Signer War 5,000 years prior to 5Ds began, Sylvester turned on his fellow dragons as planned. he received additional power from the Earthbound Immortals, making him even harder to stop. he mortally wounded Life Stream Dragon and facilitated Ancient Fairy Dragon's capture by Uru. it took both Stardust and Black Rose Dragon to finally subdue him, but a final burst of energy allowed him to break free.
actively dying, Sylvester soared toward the Crimson Dragon to engage with it directly. discharging at full power, he flew into its body as a last ditch effort. he was incinerated instantly by the sacred flames. ultimately, the plan failed and the Signers won the war once again.
Relationship to the other Signer Dragons:
Sylvester's mind may have long forgotten his feud with his brethren, but his soul has not. he feels an ancient anger rising in him if they're summoned in a duel against him. in turn, they become similarly aggressive.
he is capable of understanding Signer Dragon speech during duels, and can respond in dragon tongue. this is done unconsciously, the language is embedded so deeply in him that he can't speak in it at will.
Identity and Body:
Sylvester identifies as nonhuman. he comes to strongly believe he deserves dignity regardless of his species, and that he shouldn't need to act human to be respected.
he has a complicated relationship with the body he inhabits. he frequently suffers from phantom limbs and the sensation of being suffocated, crushed, or otherwise attacked by his own skin. most of the scars on his forearms come from him gouging/biting at his skin during episodes where he can't recognize his own body.
despite all the grief his human body gives him, Sylvester refuses to give it up. it's what allowed him to meet Kiryu and experience a taste of a real life. he wouldn't change anything even though he's been through so much pain.
his attachment to his Signer Dragon self is really weird. he doesn't directly remember anything he did, he only knows what others have told him about himself. and while he wishes he could remember, at the same time he's glad he can't. because if he remembered it would change him. he would become someone else. and deep down he doesn't want that, he wants to be who he is now and free himself from all the expectations and preconceptions heaped onto him. and that's the real reason the Dark Signers can't bring him back to his full dragon form.
he can and does talk when he has to, but it's not his preferred method of communicating. his voice is low and rough sounding.
due to being a duel spirit, the process of becoming a Dark Signer produced strange effects on his body. he gained longer, sharper teeth, which he kept even after proper resurrection. notably, he would temporarily grow scales, fins, or even small extra limbs for brief periods of time. they would simply disintegrate, though. despite not needing to eat, he became constantly hungry for raw meat and fish.
after being revived after the Dark Signer arc, he would sometimes experience digestive issues after eating non-meat foods. the issue comes and goes, tending to occur more often in periods of high stress.
if Sylvester's soul were to be removed or partly removed from his body, his eyes would change from orange with a soft glow to blue. the host body has blue eyes, which are overwritten when Sylvester is inside.
On Death:
Sylvester has died three times. Once as a dragon, again as a human, and lastly as a Dark Signer. he's terrified of dying again because he's afraid of being brought back. there's always some god deciding he isn't done.
mostly, though, he fears being separated from Kiryu. he even briefly researches complete fusion at some point, an act that would ensure they can never be apart from each other even in death. ultimately, he decides against this. (this process would combine them into a single consciousness to create an entirely new self, it wouldn't be like a judai and yubel thing)
Care:
he prefers to shower or bathe at least once a day. being dirty just makes the body more unbearable to be in than it already is. he's pretty good about his personal hygiene.
prone to getting depressed if he hasn't been near the ocean in a while. becomes a big problem when he lives permanently in Satisfaction Town. when Sylvester starts getting apathetic and laying around the house, Kiryu knows he should schedule a beach trip soon.
he enjoys physical activity like climbing, running on all fours, etc. he needs enrichment or else he'll get bored.
likes to have small, dark, enclosed spaces to hide. closets are typically best for this.
needs things to chew on
Affection and Intimacy:
after Sylvester and Kiryu become a thing, Sylvester is very physically affectionate toward him at least in private. he's like a cat, rubbing his face on him and laying all over him. a really big cat.
he nibbles too, but he's careful with his fangs.
he reeeally likes to lay on top of Kiryu while Kiryu talks to him and pets him. one of the most effective ways to get him to relax.
Sylvester also likes to show his affection in more practical ways like doing favors and such. care is kind of a big thing for him. he'll brush out Kiryu's hair and help him wash it once it starts getting long. bc good god Kiryu doesn't take care of it and it gets so bad.
doesn't really care for PDA. he's too anxious in public settings to focus on it.
Stuff he likes:
cats!!! he loves cats!!! he likes to collect cat-related objects!!! he's been carrying around an old cat plush he found since he was a kid!!!
speaking of which. he loves plushies. so much. there are so many on the bed.
anything to do with the ocean. fish, birds, water, beaches, anything. he also really loves to eat fish.
there is a part of him that will crave violence always. hey man you can't shove a giant predatory creature into a human body and expect him to not want to do predatory creature things. if someone is an ass to Kiryu he will look at him with sad puppy eyes like Can I Maul Them.
his animals :) besides all the stray cats that hang out he ends up getting some chickens and even a horse. the horse's name is Tempest and he's a black and white paint horse. eventually he gets himself a fish tank too.
DRAGONS
Dueling:
to Sylvester dueling is more like a mechanism for survival than a fun hobby. he learned how to do it in Satellite because it was a way to avoid a physical altercation in some situations. he prefers to win as quickly as possible.
his first deck before he got his current one was composed of dragon cards.
in terms of skill, he's about equal to Kiryu. they've both won and lost duels against each other.
Sylvester's salvaged dragon card slowly heals post Crash Town arc. it appears less decayed visually until fully recovering and gaining a new effect. it is distinctly different from how he looked as a Signer Dragon, combining its design with new elements. it represents Sylvester making peace with himself and his place in the world.

Top. 5. yakuza/rgg quotes? I know there are probably Many, but I am Curious. And you know what, who said honorable mentions can't be included too lol.
This one goes out to the translation team ig. Wouldn't be here without them ect ect. There probably are a lot of honourable mentions because this series has a lot of great moments but I'll contain myself to the 5.
5. "No point? You're just makin' things harder on yourself. Deprivin' yourself for no damn reason. You think the world gives two shits if there's a point or not? Keep that up and it'll break you." -Majima YK/1
(And doesn't it just? Doesn't this exact thing break Kiryu down piece by piece? That's something I love about a moment that's so early, that was written so long ago. And how it's come to reflect the series as a whole.)
4. "Hamazaki left a message for you before he went. 'Keep the Tojo Clan safe from the cops. It's the only proof left that guys like us ever existed.' [...] It took me forty years to realise this. But for guys like us... our lives aren't really our own. There's always someone new to help. Someone we need to protect. These past few years, I fought that fate with all I had. But I'm done fighting. It's time I accept the hand I was dealt." -Kiryu Y4
(I can't help but think about the Implications whenever I hear this quote and Kiryu's headspace from 4 on, & especially in 6 as well.)
3. "Once you step into the shadows you're stained black for life. No gettin' that mark off ya. But... You can still choose who you bring down with ya." -Majima Y0
(🥲🥲 always so ouchie)
2. "Every girl dreams of becoming a star one day. I wasn't any different. But the reality is I had already found what makes me whole. I thought that if I could make it as an idol...I'd be able to keep the orphanage running. But it came at a cost. I would have to leave behind the very man who raised me. [...] Even though he was unconventional, I could always rely on him. I...I think of him like a father. And I love him. I love him very much. [...]" -Haruka Y5
(I cut this short but this whole speech makes my heart ache so bad. The definition of illogical action done for deep emotional motivation. & Kiryu doesn't get to hear it. 😭)
1. "I'll let you in on a little something, The yakuza game, it's not like boxing. The man who gets beat down isn't the loser. The guy who can't tough it out till the end, he's the one who loses." -Kuze Y0
(Yes I know that's probably obvious considering I used this for a gifset recently, but it's really just stuck in my mind since I first saw it.)
Though speaking of honourable mentions while coming up with this list I did think of a) a late game ishin scene i like a lot but its long, from multiple characters, and i don't actually want to spoil it for people so :)
And b) ishin's final scene probably says something profound at some point but its genuinely 20 minutes of uninterrupted dialogue and my brain fucking groans and turns off whenever i watch it. so.

GOD. Epilogue of "A Dream a Kirin Dreamed" pisses me off. This is not to say it's bad by any stretch. It just pisses me off because WHY DIDN'T KIRYU BOTHER TO TELL DAIGO ANYTHING. Why did he just say "He didn't betray you" without backing up his point at all and then fuck off entirely without checking back in.
The man just woke up and he's awake for a week before he's discharged from the hospital??? Maybe catch him up to speed on something that's clearly weighing on him??? Or on anything else that's happened in the time he was unconscious ??? Hello???????
Like. Dude. Is it not enough that you're just dead weight for the entire fucking ending. Knowing this is your son's best friend. And no way he doesn't know because even aside from Mine's monologue which (obviously) focused on his perspective, Kiryu says himself when he encounters a journalist who can't find any friends or family to interview about Mine that Daigo would know him best.
KNOWING this is your son's best friend. You LET him kill himself in front of you both because for you, sitting on your ass and going "Mine!" was good enough. You didn't think to reason with him. You didn't think to grab onto his leg or something when he was three feet away. You weren't injured. You weren't THAT exhausted. You just didn't think to do it. Even though A SUBSTORY IN Y3 ENDS THE WAY THE MAIN STORY SHOULD HAVE AND IT'S ONE OF THE LAST THINGS YOU CAN DO BEFORE HEADING TO THE HOSPITAL.
Y3 ending is literally my Y7 ending in terms of how much anger rises up within me whenever I think about it because it just Somehow, To This Day, piles more and more on top that makes it worse than it already was. Like its ONLY saving grace is that Mine didn't actually die. Allegedly. At least you can argue Ichiban and Aoki didn't have time to react, but Kiryu had all the time in the world and did nothing.
Ok I need to stop I need to stop I know I should be mad at Yokoyama and Takeuchi and not Kiryu and I literally had to run this post through an all-caps -> sentence caps converter But Anyway Point Is If Ichi Had Been The Protagonist Of Y3 Mine Would Be Alive
i cant even really blame something like kiryu's emotional ineptitude to explain why he couldnt just be open about What Mine's Business Was because the guy can CLEARLY speak from the heart and say good and honest things. like he knows how to communicate For The Most Part so its truly just. The Fuck Happened Here you dont think it wouldve been a good idea to get daigo up to speed on the past week or 👁️👁️ just saying Mine Didn't Betray You is like. a FAIR start i GUESS but ELABORATE a bit ??
not at all a 'rare' L moment just a typical kiryu L honestly (;´д`)
#long post#snap chats#mizuki goated fr fr. highkey those two's substories are my fave theyre so fuckin bizarre.....#BUT REAL LIKE KIRYU. ILY I DO IM SORRY but i KNOW your ass can get up#mine DID just beat your ass but youre not THAT banged up and its not like you have any reason to relax after knowin richardsons alive#like there was PLENTY of time to react this some yakuza 'let him finish speaking its honorable' bullshit i PROMISE (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)(;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)#dont look down here im ranting about y7 related stuff#OK BUT NO THIS JUST REMINDED ME OF ONE OF THE MOST INFURIATING TAKES I READ ONCE#AND IT WAS BASICALLY PEOPLE BLAMING ICHI FOR AOKI DYING LIKE EXCUSE ME#how on gods green earth was ichi supposed to react in time- when its KUME of all people#what the fuck was he supposed to assume was going to happen its KUME he's a wet rag of a bitch boy#especially when all he did was praise aoki like how the fuck was he supposed to think he would stab him oh my godddd#like its not just kume showing up either ichi and aoki JUST had an intense emotional moment and they finally got a chance to breathe#like they thought they were good and in the clear and they were in a steadily-getting-better mood why would they be on guard (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)#FORGIVE ME thats been bothering me for months. i needed it off my chest#anyway im going for a walk. we got ice cream today and idk why i eat ice cream when it always makes me sad/lethargic#so heres to hoping a lil nature walk and heavy metal improves my mood a bit

Haikyuu Book Club Week 8: 326 - 330
Tumblr media
1. the significance of this game
Tumblr media
something that stood out to me was this panel. the chapter is titled "the game you can't afford to lose" and the focus is on akaashi. this doesn't seem all that logical considering that he's a second year student, so he could just try again. plus, i don't think we've ever seen him express an intense desire to win (but correct me if i'm wrong here). so, why is this game so important? because if they don't win, he won't be able to play volleyball with bokuto anymore.
but that's not the only goal akaashi has. bokuto wants to win - and akaashi is going to get him there at any cost. he is going to make sure that bokuto achieves his goal.
Tumblr media
2. akaashi
akaashi has a tendency to overthink. this can be a good thing - he is able to predict bokuto's reactions fairly well thanks to his analytical mind. however, he gets lost in his head sometimes, and that's when he can get outsmarted by an opponent.
Tumblr media
at least he's self-aware, though
Tumblr media
3. bokuto appreciation time
look at him! doing his little excited jump!
Tumblr media
bokuto x kuroo friendship
Tumblr media
bokuto x hinata friendship
Tumblr media
this panel.
Tumblr media
bonus: live kuroken reaction
Tumblr media
4. kiryu - emotional investment
wakatsu kiryu is not the person we should be rooting for. the characters we've known longer are fukurodani - they're even friends of our main characters.
and yet.
he is not simply the antagonist of this arc. instead of focusing on how our mc's can defeat kiryu and his team, we are made to feel sympathy for him. and his backstory if very similar to several other characters'! by now, we know what it feels like being defeated by people more "talented." we know what it feels like being scared to take on the responsibility of being your team's ace. all of those fears are ones our protagonists also experience.
kiryu is just like them. he is just another teenager who wants to keep playing volleyball with his friends for as long as he can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that's both the beauty and tragedy of haikyuu. you can't pick a side. you don't want anyone to lose. there is not a single character you can look at and think, "i don't like you, i don't care about your motivation and hopes, i hope you lose."
5. this line daishou says.
Tumblr media
often, when it comes to sports the focus is on who wins and who loses. but at its core, that's not what any sport is truly about. and this is especially obvious in haikyuu. it's never (well. almost never. looking at you oikawa) about defeating another team. it's about having fun. i will never stop screaming about this
6. kenma and hinata
i love their friendship so much. i have talked about them every week and i have run out of new things to say about them. but just, look at them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. one of the most important panels this week
it's kuroo thinking this, which i think matters because it shows he cares for his friend. it also reminds us that bokuto's ability to play well depends on his mood. and the only one who can make sure that bokuto either stays positive or gets out of his "emo mode" is akaashi. which brings us back to my very first point. the key element to winning this game and making sure bokuto reaches his goal is akaashi.

I want majima and kiryu to fuck not even necessarily because I ship them (but I do) but because majima deserves a good time (just like hey the self indulgent fights and competitions make him and kiryu fairly happy so good for them) and there is (unfortunately for kiryu) no one closer to kiryu right now. If majimas getting intimate might as well give kiryu some emotional support in the event
I'm playing yakuza kiwami and like ;-; kiryus closest person was his pro nishiki, who he went to prison and took the blame of Murder for, who he left their like best friend yuki in charge of protecting but yuki got lost too, Rina liked nishiki too and she's heartbroken by thar distance Too so her and kiryu are both in similar boats of loss but not the type to connect but more like experience in parallel (like slightly distant friends), Date is a comrad but kiryu is not Super Close to the dude. Haruka he is getting attached to cause hes overall kind at core and relates to her as an orphan and knew her aunt and feels bad about her aunt and mom and her safety. So like long term? Yeah he's gonna get attached and see her like a daughter I'm betting. But in the short term that doesn't mean he opens his heart and its burdens on a kid, and kiryus also responsible so he's trying NOT to dump his issues on a kid when he's the one parenting/protecting. So like.... nishiki who's the only one he'd fathom seeing him dump his heart on (even just interpreting it as such since kiryu tends to Stay Stoic) is gone. The two girls you befriend at the cabaret are wonderful, but they're friends like Yuki at best but not even as close in some ways like his Actual Background/work since they don't have that shared history. So nishiki was IT, HIS Homeboy, his bro, his best friend, his person he protected who knew their life and wanted to protect kiryu too and kiryus loved ones too even tho nishiki struggled at it. And he's out as a close confidant now ;-; he's drawing a line and closing kiryu out.
So the closest contender to someone understanding kiryu emotionally and his Full scope of who he is, what he's going through, and being allowed to even fathom venting it? It's majima. Kiryu wouldn't even want to. It would reveal potential Real weakness. And majima knows that too, does this dance to keep them "rivals" so they're allowed to socialize (and Have fun and let off stress in a,way they both actually like whether it's fights or pocket circuit racing or bowling lol - but mainly fighting which majima clearly does to Not kill but keep kiryu prepared so he keeps Living and Succeeding and so they both get to socialize without getting in trouble). Majima can't just buddy up to him, He's Shimanos man and Shimano is against the family kiryu was in, OFTEN against whatever the fuck kiryus up to. Majima can spare kiryu by not killing him (which majima certainly was capable of early game shown by how he purposely throws fights when u get out of jail to help u practice). And can tip him off about Shimanos moves occasionally. But that's already way friendlier than his position generally wants him to be. But majima sees a kindred spirit in kiryu - someone who values their own freedom of choice and acts, sticks to their own morals and self (no matter how stubbornly stupid kiryu seems to ppl sometimes for it majimas gotta admire the sheer refusal to change lol). Majimas goal from his introduction in kiwami is to slyly push you to Shape the fuck up so you'll survive as a yakuza, cause he likes interacting with you and doesnr wanna see you dead from this life for being as Hard Headed as you are (so you better get tough enough to survive as thar stubborn). As far as I can tell gameplay wise that's his function in the game, to keep you leveled up and prepared. And in the story that function along with his behavior translates to secretly/silently caring if kiryu is okay, wanting kiryu to have at least Himself as an outlet he can let go with and be himself with to a degree. An outlet for both of them, and a physical series of pleas to kiryu to Please survive so I can keep having you around to socialize with.
The scene where majima kidnaps Haruka I am still reeling over trying to figure out what it means for majimas motives, and if the game knows what it meant lol. The game itself first presents it like crossing a line and dangerous (now he's a real villain like ALL the ppl after haruka), then things continue and kiryu isn't treating it as urgent or worried once he sees majima and hears Haruka (compared to how life and death he treats it when Haruka is taken to that bar and dates there and Haruka is grazed with a bullet and almost shot). So kiryu oddly doesn't see majima as the same level of threat.
But I personally did in the scene see majima as potentially one, and I think majima wanted to be viewed as fully capable of being a danger to kiryu. I think underneath the big act, majima was doing the following. I think he was trying to 1. Show kiryu that in this life even ur "friends" or allies may turn on you and kill people and kill you or harm you or cross YOUR lines, and you have to figure out how to handle it and survive/get ur goal done (which foreshadows nicely when Nishiki and his people will do this later - a much more deadly Real threat to haruka than majima was and another person kiryu doesn't see as his enemy but may NEED to be able to view as one). 2. Majima is working for the yakuza, and all of them are after Haruka, and why the fuck wouldn't he do it too? It makes him look useful, look like he's working, and it means Haruka in is his hands and kiryus life in is his hands - and he can ensure they don't die as easily necessarily. And if he's lucky stubborn kiryu learns his FUCKING BLIND SPOTS from this and then in the future prevents yet another kidnapping of Haruka and danger to himself (unfortunately kiryu fucks up and she's kidnapped again later... but majima certainly gave him a learning scenario to try and learn from experience). 3. He did want to come off personally as a threat to kiryu. So get the kid, so kiryu rakes it more serious than if it's just them. Because in this life they live, they may need to be real enemies at some point. And majima needs to cope with and practice that possibly as much as he'd like kiryu to Understand that and handle that burden too. The bitter fact majima wants to be close, be friends, even Gets kiryus motives in some regards and certainly gets his stubborn resolution to his own decisions. But majima knows he doesn't get to trust and open up and he can't promise Anyone he won't hurt them, not for sure. So it's a big moment for majima.
Then it all ends? With majima getting stabbed to protect kiryu, and saying he's the only one allowed to kill kiryu. I don't think he meant to get hurt on purpose- tho needing the hospital certainly means now he has a good excuse to not help the yakuza kidnap Haruka, not help the yakuza chasing kiryu. (And his nonstop smoke breaks so u don't fight him that for me happened to align with after that lol in my 0laythrpugh definitely added to other feeling he really doesn't wanna be told to get u around then). But getting hurt on purpose both unexpectedly communicates to kiryu and the player that in at least some fucked up way majima does want you to be okay. And it also communicates he Wants you to get thst he IS a potential threat to you, as friendly as he otherwise is (like pocket circuit racing ToT). And that again he needs you to Understand that. That when you bond he wants to be close and be allowed to be, with you wrll aware of how dangerous he may have to be later and letting him bond anyway. He needs you to know he might kill you, that betrayal might always happen and that you accepted that and knew that. It's a really bizarre show of intimacy and yet it says so much raw personal shit that's hard to describe, when he takes that knife for kiryu and says only he gets to kill him.
Anyway tldr if kiryu was gonna get intimate emotionally wirh anyone (we aren't even talking fucking anymore, even a quiet walk by a river or sit down to lean against each other or drink to lament what's going on) majima is The person he's emotionally most able to click with rn. And tbh their fights are the closest kiryu is getting to that ability to vent and get support in the game in a way at times.
Also. Love these characters.

public knowledge (what's apparent when first meeting him)
his name is yoshiya kiryu, but his parents call him joshua. he's fifteen years old.
he's a pokemon trainer, travelling the world. the reason he gives for his travels may differ: sometimes he'll claim to be taking on the gym challenge of whatever region he's in, others that he's simply a tourist, or anything else the situation calls for.
there's something off about him. maybe it's his eyes, how they shine a bit too bright, the reflected light often obscuring the pupil; maybe it's the way he moves, the stiff, almost doll-like motion of his body; or maybe it's his smile, vacant and fake. whatever it is, there's just something unnerving about him that can be picked up by most people.
he never parts from his phantump, yoshi, and always keeps it out of its pokeball and close by his person.
psychic-type pokemon, particularly those attuned to strong emotions, tend to avoid him, or become aggressive in his presence.
he doesn't like other people very much, and prefers the company of pokemon.
semi-public knowledge (what one could learn from getting to know him better, or doing a background check)
he's originally from celadon city, kanto, but moved to galar with his family when he was six.
he has the ability to understand and speak to pokemon--or at least he claims to.
yoshi isn't technically his pokemon, as it has not been caught in a pokeball.
he's afraid of hatterene, and will try to avoid them at all costs.
he lies constantly. he'll say anything he needs to to get his way. sometimes, he'll lie for the simple amusement of it, or just to see how someone reacts.
he was bullied by his peers practically his entire life, both for his social awkwardness and his claimed ability to talk to pokemon. his parents moved him to ballonlea in hopes of giving him a fresh start. it didn't work out the way they planned.
information on him is hard to find, and the dates don't seem to match up with his age. did the kiryus even have a son...?
he harbors a deep hatred of humans in general, believing them to be boring, shallow, and incapable of change or connection. it's impossible for humans to understand each other, and most aren't even willing to try, so they're not worth his effort, or even existence as a whole.
he's horribly lonely.
private knowledge (what only he and perhaps a handful of others know)
he's dead, and his spirit, housed in yoshi the phantump, is possessing his reanimated corpse. he's searching for a way to tether his spirit to his body again, but has had no luck thus far.
his parents never called him joshua. they didn't even call him yoshiya. they barely called him anything at all. they were neglectful; they didn't care about him. the move to ballonlea was more about minimizing the embarrassment for them than it was about protecting him.
his entire persona is a mask, built to deceive himself and others. his misanthropy is a projection of his own self-loathing, directed outwards so he doesn't have to cope with it.
his emotions are intense, unpredictable, and painful; he doesn't know how to deal with them, so he shoves them down as deep as he can and puts on a facade of arrogant indifference to protect himself. after all, his emotions are what got him killed.
(rather: he can't be rejected, ostracized, ignored, made fun of, anything, if he doesn't care, right? no one can leave him alone if he doesn't give them the chance. if he doesn't try to let anyone in, he can't find out just how deeply unloveable he is--how empty, both in body and spirit.)
his body, particularly his torso, is littered with scars and a prominent burn mark from being beamed down and torn apart by a hatterene.

thinking about mirei...major spoilers for yakuza 5 and a bit of 4
mirei def has her flaws but when i see that people hate her (like specifically Her, not her writing, bc i agree w ppl who hate her writing) it really just strikes me as "fictional woman is Rude and gets called bitch but male characters worse than her dont get as much hate" syndrome lol
also tw for discussion of age gaps :/
i liked mirei a lot she rlly is gatekeep gaslight girlboss, she's cool. but she's also, scary in a way. i remember reading that someone described her convincing kiryu to let haruka become an idol under her agency as emotional manipulation and they're right...
you watch that scene and it honestly is clear she is using kiryu's fears against him, he doesn't want to do this but he's lead into thinking it's the best decision (it isnt!!!!!!!!!! imo).
and mirei's own motivation for this...haruka says that she thinks mirei wants her to succeed and become an idol with a japan dome debut because mirei wanted that but she didn't get it. im sure she also wants to see haruka shine but i bet those lost dreams of mirei play a rather big part in her motivations tbh
it's not like haruka's being forced to do this...haruka definitely wants this. to become a star and all. but the weight mirei has put on her makes me uncomfortable about it, idk how to explain it. i honestly think she's really hurt kiryu and haruka and i wish she lived long enough to be able to reflect on this. and for kiryu and haruka to realize that they've been hurt in the first place honestly.
mirei is a cool character, i like that she has her flaws, but what. is the purpose!!! of making her do that if you AREN'T going to make her realize what she's done and atone for it in some way. AND I WANT HER TO MEET MAJIMA AGAIN
AND SPEAKING OF THAT-- i honestly...have mixed feelings on her connections with majima. on one hand i like that in majima's past, which is riddled with so much crime and conflict there's This Part--him and mirei-- that is proof he had some...semblance of normalcy for a while. as crazy as his life has been, yeah, he was married like any other guy (but ofc you dig deeper and its not at all happy as it seems, or so it didnt end that way) so i like that they gave that to majima, it makes him feel more human in a way.
on the other hand, is their ages. this is the part i warned you about because uh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if my maths is right, that's an entire decade of age gap, 28 year old majima marrying 18 year old mirei. this is literally something that is deserving of being stoned to death imo LOL i cannot fucking wrap my head around the fact they just DID THIS AND DIDNT THINK ABOUT IT?
"ah but the events of yakuza zero, when majima was 24--" Cool. y0 didnt exist, in game form or THOUGHT form when yakuza 5 was made and up until this point all the lore we had on majima was "he was 21 when he was tortured by shibata and co" and thats IT.
why couldn't've majima been younger? 23, 24, with mirei being older? 21, 22??? i literally cannot wrap my head around either this, or the people who thought this and were like This is fine. it's Not!!!!!! Lol!!
the rest of their relationship bothers me a bit, too. i don't know why but it just does. as much as i do like the way that the factoid of majima being married makes you go "oh, shit, really? there was a time in his life where majima goro had an intimate relationship outside of the yakuza, outside of a life of crime and violence, when he had something...normal?", the way it makes him more human and reveals a softer side to him capable of love... the idea, and the rest of the story doesn't sit right with me at all. just can't explain why, but it simply does.
it....honestly MIGHT be the fact that i once read someone say "it feels like they gave majima a wife just to prove he's straight cause god did he look gay as hell in the past 4 games". MIGHT be. and whether or not this WAS rgg studio's intention. it feels like it but I Hope Not!!!!!!

Dreamwatch 5/21/21 (Match 5)
Bonadad (Alex Garcia/Daniel Gonzalez) vs Esperanza (Hiro Kurosaki/Takaya Kiryu) (Click here to watch!)
Tumblr media
An interesting match up between the leaders and second-in-commands of Bondad and Esperanza. Emotions have been high throughout this feud, with both sides needing big wins more than anything. Bondad especially is at the point where they can't afford to lose, but Esperanza have been on a bit of a winning streak that has done wonders for them recently. Something about this Bondad vs Esperanza face off feels so much more personal. These four men are really the heart of the feud, the most important pieces in the puzzle, and they're coming face to face in 2 on 2 action.
This match was excellent. One could make the argument that Daniel Gonzalez was the weak link going into this match but you could not make the argument by the end of the match. All four men more than held their own in this match. They are dead-set on victory and they are not willing to let anything take victory away from them. Bondad has looked weak recently but tonight it looks like Garcia and Gonzalez are righting this ship and becoming the heroic figures they've set out to be. Hiro Kurosaki was also extremely impressive in his match. His growth as a performer has been steady and he has gone from getting winded and getting knocked out to taking the fight to the best luchador in Dreamwatch This match was a blast and it also ended in a very fitting way, going to a draw right after Gonzalez landed a huge air raid crash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Backstage, Gonzalez is somewhat upset that he couldn't pull off the victory tonight but he hopes he delivered a message to Esperanza. At the end, he had Takaya Kiryu on the ropes. Gonzalez is tired of Esperanza thinking they can use Bondad as a stepping stone. Gonzalez gets that Bondad are supposed to be heroes but they're also supposed to be heroes of the people. They have to connect with the people with their emotions and in the face of negativity sometimes people get a little fired up. They fight harder, they adapt. That's what he thinks Bondad has to do to pick up the victory against Esperanza. Alex Garcia nods and agrees. When you're fighting for the right thing, you can't ignore the wrong things. Garcia wants to represent the best of lucha and what it has to offer. Bondad aren't going to falter here or ever. He tells Gonzalez that its time to bring the fight.
Takaya Kiryu is pretty hurt backstage after taking the air raid crash from Gonzalez near the end but that doesn't matter. It seems like Bondad has some signs of life in them again. This isn't what he wanted. Bondad are names to add to a resume of notable people that he beat. This wont change, but he figured they'd be easier. Either way, its almost time. Its almost time to fight Garcia and finally put his career back on track, headed right to the top. Kurosaki on the otherhand has been waiting for Gonzalez to wake up a little. Gonzalez is about to go into the biggest match of his Dreamwatch career, and Kurosaki doesn't feel like wrestling someone that seems to be half of what they were less than a month ago. Kurosaki will replace happiness with pure dark matter. He tells Dreamwatch to get ready for it.

I could talk for days about their relationship in general and how insane they were for creating Kenzan as the third game ever given the way their relationship is depicted in that game.Ishin is something else about them, too. These two can't go without having high tension that settles into something deep and emotional, becoming closer to each other than anyone else.To think it happens three times. It would be funny if they created a spinoff game that takes place in the future, and Majima and Kiryu were still like t h a t
Also worth mentioning that 3 presents you with interesting parallels to another duo in the game that really sneak by the majority of the players. That alone can wind up in a lengthy discussion. You're playing the remaster right?Looking forward to how you go through the third game!
Kenzan is the 3rd game made?? Like 1 then 2 then Kenzan then 3??
Also ah. How much of Kenzan would I understand if I played with a low level of Japanese (like can read slice of life simple manga)? I'm not sure if Kenzan has a game walk-through. Part of why I bought Ishin was its newer and there's an online guide with translations if I do happen to get stuck or not grasp some part of the story. You are making me want to buy kenzan too...
A spinoff game in the future would be. So much. Incredible.
Yes I love their dynamic a lot. I played 0 first which felt lovely as standalone stories paralleling and explaining how they grew into the men they'd go on to become. Then kiwami 1 I really liked how majima puts on acts and both attempts to help and yet has a really realistic nuanced grasp on how you need to be certain ways to not get used, not get read, be useful, etc. And also being despite all that acting, able to be More Himself and less trapped Because he knows how to navigate things better now. I'm playing kiwami 2 now majimas chunk and especially isolated it really emphazises those parts of his personality - the opening with bringing money to tojo clan to point out a bad idea, the way his own family tends to dress less like the others (he stands out intensely in that room of suits in the tojo meeting), the way he can get along with cabaret club girls he asks questions of, can get scary when needed, is searching for his own family man who ran but also investigating rather than jumping to conclusions I only played 2 chapters of his so please no spoilers lol).
Like... in the original 1 and 2 I assume he was much less clearer this way if at all, and the mad dog persona may have been nearly or all that was visible. I'm playing kiwami 1 and 2 so can only judge by that. But to me they integrated really well wirh rhe implication created in 0 that he's very adaptable and smart, but in the end Hates lack of freedom and being controlled and leads/chooses with his heart. And seeing nishitani be so intensely Himself, and also so Wild people struggle to control/play him, the way he led with his passion, and how majima certainly took from that and from makotos friend who helped her.
The scene in Kiwami 1 when he kidnaps haruka was so interesting to me for a lot of reasons. One being it's a more serious rendition of Majima Everywhere - the actual mechanic in the game, is mostly majima acting like a rival (and even a potential threat sometimes since hey this is an outside family guy learning your weak spots and clearly better at fighting you who gives up when you're good enough) but his goal seems overall to just help kiryu get strong enough TO survive because he appreciates the man and his values and wants him to survive and thrive (thats why he does give up, why he admires kiryus decisions, why he shows up to socialize in the non fighting scenarios like bowling and pocket racing - he cares about kiryus emotional state and isolation, wants to honestly connect to some degree to with someone who might even Vaguely get him and the Need for that). In their first meeting in kiwami 1 majima sees kiryus stubbornness to his values and when kiryu sees him post prison majima keeps fighting him ultimately To Help kiryu. So the scene in the battling cage is like, a reminder majima is a potential threat to kiryu. A lesson, thar even majima, even a friend, even someone who'd like for you to be okay, might not be trustworthy. Especially in their kind of lives. Might hurt you or hurt your loved ones, might use what they know against you, you NEED to be on the alert more kiryu (oh the nishiki foreshadowing). I'm sure it's also part showing Shimano he IS doing something, seeming useful ish, keeping his position secure. To be a mad dog people fear, he has to act outlandish and frightening and unpredictable and back that up. The fact though... that at the end of the batting cage scene, someone tries to stab kiryu and majima takes the knife. That majima doesn't ultimately want kiryu hurt (majima going wirh his heart) and yet saying he's the only one who gets to kill kiryu (a reminder of the lesson majima meant to teach - even he or any close person could hurt you so be prepared, and also kiryu PLEASE get strong enough to be the kind of person able to fight me and people like me, to be worthy of going against each other, live up to the dragon you used to be that I believe you can be again, the kind of man who deserves me killing him and not someone less). I love Zhao yunlan in guardian who is not much like majima mad dog wise but very much like majima in valuing freedom and leading by heart, and acting as a Part of who he is in a way to get what he wants (being informal and friendly to insult people or warm them up for info etc, able to change for his needs, but also the act is so much him it sort of Is him). So while majimas in some ways a lot more impulsive, I click a lot with how he's working his intelligence under the scenes to move toward his goals.
Theres a scene in Kiwami 2 where in purgatory after he fights kiryu, kiryu asks him for help, and majima tells him he's being played like a puppet and explains.. quickly grasping from what kiryu tells him that there's a plot, helping kiryu notice it and figure it out, and highlighting a bit how kiryu isn't always thinking in the perspective to notice manipulations like that. Makes sense, kiryus generally quite forward and stubborn. Majima though, he works angles to keep himself out of shit and being trapped again, and steers clear of getting manipulated when possible, so he's always a lot more aware of those things and how to act in relation to them than he seems on the surface. Then lol there's scenes like the bomb diffusing where he's leading on instincts and his heart. (I do think kiryus stubbornness to his values reminds majima of his own stubbornness to following his heart).
I'm in Kiwami 2 now and a much softer scene but I did the Cabaret sidestories and Majima joined the cabaret and reunited with yuki and worked with kiryu and I loved seeing them all as a team. ;-; it reminded me of the way majima was like family to the cabaret club Sunshine in 0, then to see kiryu who'd done the same in kiwami 2 get to meet THAT majima that side of him that friendly slightly silly gentler majima With people he considers actual friends like yuki was so freaking nice. I'm softhearted despite my love of action and angst lol, and I loved that little bonus at the end of that side game area. If majima construction has any similarly rewarding sidestories maybe I'll go play that side game more next ToT
Kiwami 2 comparing Ryuji and Kiryu is again really interesting from a character perspective. I expected daigo and ryuji to be the two compared in kiwami 2, based on them being introduced at similar times and in the same age range. But when ryuji met kiryu I got why okay he's the other guy on the cover, why he's a dragon, why he's fascinating to compare. (I like daigo too he's mmm interesting with potential, and like ryuji an eventual successor to a clan leadership... I Love his mom).
I'm really excited for yakuza 3! Mine seems mmm fascinating as a potential villain from the little I know, I love daigo and am happy he'll be there. I won't look up spoilers but ohhh what is the duo to look out for in 3?
And yes I'm playing the remasters. I think nearly all the yakuza games have a version on ps4 right now. I think maybe Yakuza Dead Souls is for ps3 though, but I am mmm somewhat tempted to get that too it looks fun.. just not sure I'll like the shooting combat part. I like the very simple fighter game style/action game fighting the yakuza games mostly have.
Curious of your (and maybe the general opinion on) the kenzan and ishin versions of the characters. Do they seem like ancestors, or like potentially other lives of those characters, or like alternate universes?

Top 5 Yakuza bosses?
Idk if you mean like, To Fight but tbh i have a hard time remembering movesets, so the hype caused by the music and the emotional investment is what lingers in my brain.
5. Kuze (I didn't really appreciate it at the time, but the way you fight him throughout 0 really works for me, he's the first major boss and he keeps on from there. Also the sewer fight. Need I say more?)
4. Kiryu [in Y4] (I still just love that moment with saejima in Yakuza 4, sure Kiryu isn't going all out but I really went "Theyre doing it!! Theyre making us fight him!!" and I've never forgotten that. ❤️❤️ he tiger dropped me ❤️❤️)
3. Ryuji (2's plot sucks shit but Ryuji is a great character, though I can't define why. Besides maybe that the final fight is fucking stupid but perfectly encapsulates what he said 5 minutes earlier "a real man oughta be a little stupid")
2. Okita (Ya know i thought about putting Nikaido here but I might be assassinated for that dead souls opinion. So anyways I really love the ishin thing of boss fights as a study of tennen rishin through all it's users. missed opportunity with not getting to re-fight the master of the style, but okita 2 is a good stand in)
1. Majima (Ok its not JUST my bias talking here, it's how many times we get to fight him over the course of the series and how familiar we become with his fighting style. He's a character who even the casual player, that doesnt replay previous games, can learn to counter. Also I love a guy who can match kiryu step for step)
