An Open Letter To Whoever Did This:
Cool. So you took this absolutely beautiful 1-2 year old dog and tied her by her harness and leash to a post, leaving her in the sun, in the grass, at the end of a literal dead-end road where only a handful of people would’ve stood a chance at finding her. Her entire body itches. She isn’t spayed. She has pressure sores from being tied up somewhere and left for extensive periods aside from this last time. If the elements didn’t hurt her, then the local coyotes sure as hell would have as soon as the sun went down. But you know what you forgot to do?
Didn’t microchip her, and guess who’s a registered fosterer?! Welcome home Penelope!
Penny appears to be a Catahoula Leopard Hound/Black Mouth Cur mix. From her emergency vet visit paid for by good Samaritans, she’s a little underfed and needs to be spayed at least, but she’s otherwise been healthy, happy, and overjoyed since the moment she set foot here! She’ll be getting her full workup at my family vet very soon, vaccinated, tested for disease/parasites, screened for any other underlying health conditions, and spayed.
Penny (unashamedly named after my favorite character on Criminal Minds, Penelope Garcia, as well as after Penelope from The Odyssey) spent most of the day running and playing with her new toys on our 5 acres of rural wilderness, grasslands, and ponds. She gives wonderful hugs and kisses and is extremely intelligent. She has wonderful manners already and hasn’t even needed to be housebroken. She’s a very good girl and lets us know if she needs to go outside by going to the door and ringing a bell. She gives tackle-hugs when she’s too excited to contain herself, is already learning new commands, and making friends! She already has a play-date with my weed vendor’s new Blue Heeler puppy.
Penny and my almost-year-old kitten Nimue are still a little unsure of each other. Nimue isn’t thrilled about having a giant in the house, but she’s very tolerant and only lets her know not to get in her personal space. Penny only needed to be warned to mind her space once, and now does everything she can to give Nimue all the sense of safety and security in our home she needs to feel secure.
It took about an afternoon before they were napping together with nobody hissing and nobody whining! She’s already play buddies with our 14-year-old doxie, Eragon, who grew a new pep in his step the moment they set eyes on each other and now likes to steal her toys and hide them in his own bed for their canine games of treasure-hunt.
She only arrived early this afternoon, but I already love her. She’s excellent at heeling and coming when she’s called, and is already learning tricks like, “Go get your toy!” Although, if she isn’t sure which toy she wants to play with, she’s still at the stage where she gets excited and barks.
She’s a very, very good girl. I was out taking her on a walk just earlier, and my neighbor (who seems to always want a reason to piss off his other neighbors) shouted at me from across our respective properties. He has a yellow lab that he never keeps on a leash and doesn’t have a fence to keep it in, so it regularly digs into ours to use our front yard as its personal latrine.
I didn’t respond and took Penny back inside. I’m not the idiot that can’t recognize their own dog, and frankly, I’ve missed having a canine companion since the passing of my 12-year-old baby, Sean, a few months ago. I miss him very much, and Penny is helping to heal that pain already. I absolutely love how big she is, and I don’t feel anxious or scared to go outside if she’s with me, even with the neighbor yelling at me about stealing his dog and trying to make a scene. I would’ve engaged him, but Penny was already flattening her ears and snarling at him the way I was on the inside, and he quickly muttered a “My mistake,” when she bore her giant hunting-dog teeth at him :)
