Achilles’ invulnerability means that the amount of damage he does on the battlefield is intense, but it’s the grief-stricken desire for revenge against Hector which I think really earns him a place on this list— he’s so angry at Hector killing Patroclus that he immediately goes out and fights Hector, stabbing him through the neck with a spear, and then dragging his body around, tied to his chariot, as he goes to murder more people in his rage. While one might argue Hunt for him specifically chasing Hector, ultimately I’d choose slaughter because of the all encompassing bloodlust that follows his slaying of Hector, and all of his fighting in the Illiad in general."

Absolutely fascinating what framing does.
One: Hector is equated to Lenore. The two have obvious parallels, as the "nice" ones in an evil group who have something of a blue an orange morality. But this is what it leads to: comparing Hector keeping zombie animals because he's innocent enough to not realize how creepy it is (something even pointed out in-universe by a mocking Dracula), to Lenore deliberately manipulating and raping a human being to keep him as a slave.
Do y'all hear yourselves. You're blaming a rape and abuse victim, or at the very least downplaying his pain, because he kept zombie animals, which is totally the same thing.
Ah, but it's the same thing in the eyes of the vampire. And that vampire was framed as being the "good" one. So that's okay.
Yes, it makes sense that a vampire would see a human as a dumb pet at best, I'm not questioning it from an in-universe perspective. I'm questioning why the viewers unironically justify her actions.
Two: Hector was the "nice" one. He wanted to turn humanity into livestock because he genuinely thought it would be a good compromise compared to mass slaughter (Dracula and Isaac's plan). Misguided, unempathetic, even stupid, but not cruel. He needed to grow and understand the implications of his "mercy"... but certainly not by being effectively tortured. He had, no question, the worst fate in the whole show, for the crime of being... immature. Some fans think this is narratively appropriate.
(it doesn't help that he doesn't even "learn his lesson". His plan in S4, his idea of amending his mistakes, was to bring back Dracula. Character arc? never heard of her. His "development" was, according to the fans, allowing Lenore to die instead of keeping her to him. I don't think I need to explain why this is fucked up.)
Isaac was aware that he would cause death. He just thought that he was doing it in the name of a good cause, that the humans deserves it for being cruel. He spent an entire season roaming around with an ever growing army of monsters, crying that the humans would not let them through and killing them in retailation to feed his army.
But he got an unquestionably happy ending. He got everything he wanted on a silver platter, without suffering once after Dracula yeeted him in the desert. He got to have a final badass battle, he got to stop Hector's nonsensical plan of bringing back Dracula, he got an epic final speech, he got to be happy and content with his actions.
The show frames Isaac, who was essentially a fundamentalist terrorist and buddy buddy with the vampire who wanted to exterminate humanity, as being more deserving of his happiness than the man who got abused and raped and disrespected since day 1, and people simply accept this, praise him to high heavens for his offscreen "character development", and spend more words on whether or not Hector deserved what he got.
Framing is a very, very important device.

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM FOR SEASON 4 😭 i didn’t think I’d see s4 until October!!!! I will come back and answer these questions in the future on May 13/14th
I want to know the following:
1. Will Dracula and Lisa return?
Edit: they return in the last episode I’m so happy and confused still but I just hope they live the best life in England 🥺😭
2. Will someone check in on Alucard and give him a hug because his trust in humans plummeted straight down?
Edit: Greta kinda hugged him? Became his friend....I’m hoping they become more than just friends. Like cmon the orphans are calling him father. He’s daddy material!!!
3. Will Lenore and Carmilla fight? (Idk I theorise that their bad sexy bi bitch power will make them fight for dominance.)
Edit: they didn’t have a fist fight like I pictured because they’re sisters who love each other but Lenore was betrayed but Carmillas ambitions which would leave Lenores diplomatic values in the dust.
4. Will Issac...chill..?? Forgive humans? Turn against the vampires and hell- probably not but I’m curious on his future move.
Edit: wait...did Isaac die in that tower? Idk I’m still slightly confused. But I guess he forgave humanity, he wanted the sick not to suffer so he slaughtered the city and rebuilt it for a future people/nation. He also didn’t kill Hector and he was really chill, he just wanted to end Carmilla because her ambitions were toxic.
5. Is hector ok? I mean listen I’m into pet play but this is against his will, can...can Lenore and him be genuine next season please? I knew not to trust her but I just think they make a cute pair (even though she made him her slave SJDJDJD)
Edit: Hector did not seem traumatised by the puppy treatment and Lenore and him became....banter pals? She was super genuine and I love her and I love him and I was fucking rooting for them to fuck some more! I hoped for more love!! But that unfortunately didn’t happen because Lenore got depressed and killed herself which I’m still crying about!!!!
6. MORE LOVE MOMENTS BETWEEN TREVOR AND SYPHA- we got morning after naked cuddling/sex but like....I want moreeeeee!!!! Trevor has gotta carry on the line of Belmont....right 🤭👀
Edit: YES WE GOT MORE LOVE and lil trefor is baking in the oven heheheh 🥺☺️ sadly no sex scenes grrrr!!! I bawled my eyes out hearing Trevor yell I LOVE YOU to her.
7. Will Sypha ever see her family/people again?
Edit: we got super fucking close but no, she decided to stay the moment she realised her mans was alive.
8. Will Dracula and Lisa slap Alucard because he murdered humans. Or cuddle him and then have to say goodbye because the dead cannot remain with the living blah blah blah
Edit: sweet Alucard got through depression with the help of hottie badass leader Greta and orphans calling him father. He doesn’t know his parents are back and if there’s a season 5 I don’t think we will see them tbh 🤷‍♀️
9. ....are they going to release all the episodes at once....or are they gonna be douche bags and make it a week by week episode release?
Edit: netflix decided not to be a capitalist dick and released all the episodes at once which I watched in one sitting and so I need to use the bathroom excuse meeee.

okay so i gotta talk abt castlevania s4 and how it was relevant for me, and if you haven't seen it, this is gonna be spoilers all around, and if you dont want to read an overshare of a rant of mine, just skip this post, i love you still
i've been having the worst year out of all years of my life, including the year i was in a coma for like a month and a half. my mom was hospitalised and operated on bcs shit got seriously fu*ked up in her head, and me and my sister rushed to her from countries A and B to country C to take care of stuff. she got better, but, some 20 days after that, i went back to country A, and my sister to country B, when only my sisters intuition that sth was wrong made it possible to discover that our dad had a serious brain stroke in B. mom was in physical therapy in C, and i was stuck in country A bcs i wasnt yet vaccinated and i have 2 of the high risk diagnoses for covid and country B is like, the worst abt everything, especially healthcare. so i couldn't get to him, and my sis was left alone to deal w/ stuff before mom also came, and i lowkey fell apart a bit, bcs anyone who knows me, knows how attached i am to my dad.
so while waiting for news abt whats gonna happen, i stayed w my bff for some days. and i went and lit candles in a church bcs i knew it means a lot to my dad, and eid came and we all spent it together, and then i sat down one morning when i woke up at 6 and couldnt sleep so i was like. huh. i rmbr being excited abt castlevania s4. lets watch it, how much worse can it get?
and the thing is, they set up s3 in a way that made it pretty obvious how it could go. Alucard slaughtering the twins was a very cliched setup for him to turn Evil Like His Dad, and i was rly worried thats what was gonna happen, and Trevor and Sypha just had a huge disappointment happen and I was worried they would have relationship issues and i was just like "fuck. They're gonna make everything awful, aren't they?", but i was v numb and v tired and v commited to watch it. So i did.
And guess what. Guess fucking what. They didnt. They fucking didnt make everything awful, in fact, they made nothing awful. They made everything fucking happy. Alucard talked about his issues with, or more like at Greta, who is amazing and i will love her to death. He doesnt turn bad or evil, he just kinda. Grows up. And Sypha and Trevor talk, communicate, healthily, and there is no cheap thrills in their relationship. And Hector and Lenore are as fucked up as they can be, but he lets her die, which was the only fitting fate. And Carmilla gets to go out as a badass she is, knowing she would lose, but still giving it her all. And my favorite vampire lesbians survive and are still together (and holy fuck how awesome is Striga in that day-armour holy fuck). And you know what the best part is?
They all get a fucking happy ending. They all get a fucking happy ending, omfg, i haven't seen that in such a long time! A proper fucking happy ending, where the story arcs arent fucking tragic just because of a drama element, nope, no sir, if someone died, it was the best thing for them when alternative is taken into account.
And they could have gone the other way. They couldve made it realistic, and tragic, and just plain fuvking stupid. They fucking set tge scene for that kinda ending. But they didnt. They made them all happy, and together, and laughing, and just.. fucking wholesome, as much as sth gory as castlevania can be.
And i was just. So happy? Like, i cried af, and my bff was like "no spoilers" and i didnt say anything i just cried and felt kinda optimistic abt the future. So yeah. I just wanted to say that i'll never forget how in the worst period of my lifw so far, i went in expecting to be hurt af, and i wasnt, bcs someone said "fuck all this shit, thwres enough sadness and meaningless death in the world, lets have everyone happy and hale and awesome and alive and give them a happy ending". And its a bit ironic how that phrase has been synonymous w d**ney, and yet i havent seen one thing from that shitshow give even half a thought to the notions of "character development" and "happy ending" as much as Castlevania, an r-rated gory fucking cartoon did.
So. I just. I love castlevania s4 so much, im smiling even as i write this. And its a good memory from a v bad time, and i just. Appreciate the decisions the writers and creators and producers made about it more than i xan ever say.
And yeah, this is biased, and personal af, but honestly idgaf, we can talk abt colonialism and feminism and all that sometime else. Bcs this post exist for two reasons only. No. 1, for me to get some things off my chest in my usual way of identifying w a piece of media up to an unhealthy amount, and 2., for me to say that we all deserve a happy ending here and there.

Claude Von Riegan, he is brown desi so he is already better than most and he just wants to eliminate racism. He is light skinned mixed but he still is valid and his real name is Khalid so.
Edelgard Von Hresvelg, canonical bisexual icon. When male main characters do wild shit is bad but everything she does is girlbossery. Fucked up female characters are just better and she just wanted to take out nobility, kingdoms and the church.
Alm and Celica, they committed god slaughter twice which is cool as fuck.
Micaiah, she is just trying her best.
Ike, cultural reset. Cultural Reset, when they could have gone with a regular macho 2000's anime protagonist they twisted it by making him an awkward understanding young man that genuinely cared for others and helped them because he wanted it. Was he a little weird on Radiant Dawn? Yes but he was still kind hearted and he got turned into a Bara King.

my thoughts on castlevania s4 SPOILERS obviously
wow, i was actually impressed with hector for once. he collected the last wit about him to turn his situation around and take his balls out of lenore’s hands back into his pants. i thought he would go sicko mode on her and feared it getting a little revenge misogynistic, but i was pleasantly surprised at how civilized it was between them up until the end.
lenore was a little useless, wasn’t she? i half expected her to go, “you know what? fuck diplomacy” and just go mach 1 on everyone. eh.
isaac, oh. isaac. my favorite secondary character. wanders the desert conquesting, killing and raising the dead which made him realize things. he realized so much he marched right into carmilla’s castle while her beserker and army were away and owned her ass. good for him.
carmilla. oh, carmilla. tied with isaac for my favorite. so determined and single-minded that she sent away all her forces while she schemed in her fortress. she depended too hard on her partners doing all the work for her, and as a result she wasn’t much of a thinker, just a bloody, murdery doer. for example, she didn’t think that there were other formidable forces in the world that may want to impede her whole world domination plan? did she forget about isaac, out in the world rogue forgemastering? that was a threat she should have checked on before going global. she got too greedy, too quickly, and she paid the ultimate price for it. she went out like a fucking boss though, and i was pleased with her arc overall. as far as villains go, her raison d’etre was relatable and hard to argue with. 
the dialogue style is both one of my favorite parts of the show but also at times a pain point for me. when it’s good, it’s relaxed, comfortable and realistic and the characters play off each other really well with it (like quipping back and forth during battle which i normally hate but works well here). when it’s bad, it’s a little cringe. some dialogue scenes went on wayyyyy too long while the characters repeated things they’d literally just said verbatim, which is awkward af in screenwriting. i.e. Isaac telling Hector twice in the space of 30 seconds “Dracula earned his rest.” which is odd because impactful phrases like this usually are not repeated so as not to, yknow, dilute their impact. Also Carmilla waxing spiteful about “evil old men” and repeating some variation of the phrase 15 times in one scene. lastly, the liberal sprinkling of the word “fuck” in every other line is also like, mostly welcome but once or twice just sounded silly given the context of the scene. i’m nitpicking, here.
saint-germain. Idk much about his woman, but she definitely seemed worth slaughtering a village and raising dracula from the dead for. violent and hot as fuck, she never uttered a single word which i want to think is indicative of something but what? did we ever figure out why she kept eluding him via dimension-jumping? imagine she was trying to get away from him all this time lol. yikes.
the smartest people in this whole show are the vampire lesbians who peace tf out immediately when they see their castle is under siege and figure out carmilla is dead. LOL at them assuming useless lenore is dead too (bc, she’s useless) and just leaving her there. they packed their shit up, moved out west, presumably to build a lover’s stronghold where they could just be in vampire love forever. GOOD FOR THEM.
trevor: continued to drunkenly yell Fuck while being masterfully proficient immediately at any weapon he picks up, though eventually always ending up using his fists like the brawler he is.
sypha: if she met the avatar, she'd be like “lmao, you can ‘bend’ the elements, huh? i can use them in ways that would make your skin crawl and your head explode to even think about. sit the fuck down.”
alucard: adorable himbo with a heart of gold, needs a tough as nails gf to jerk him out of his moods and organize his kitchen for him. another round of good for him. i was a little scared they would kill off his gf but that would have been unimaginably cruel considering what he went through in s3. alucard had imo the best/most stylish fight sequences of the season. and they know what we’re about, since he was shirtless or at least in a very deep V cut most of the time. thank you.
i had 2 major predictions for this season going into it: trevor would die (permanently), and sypha would have a kid/get pregnant. i was 75% on the money.
i liked the ending message of why humans win these wars against vampires despite being slow meatbags compared to them. the vampires’ fatal flaw is resistance to change, provoked by their immortality, arrogance, and insatiable desire for power in order to provide themselves long term stability in the world. whereas humanity’s best trait is the polar opposite: adaptability. throughout history, the ability to adapt has been proven to be the determining factor in a species’ survival. vampires, for all their god-like strengths, prove to be no exception to this rule. alucard, with his human heart, is the only one with vampire blood who has proven he can make major changes and overcome personal prejudices to live a better life.
And my final thoughts on the ending are: everyone major got a satisfying end to their arc. BUT. it was just too happy. either trevor should have stayed dead, OR dracula and lisa should have gone back to hell. but not both. having everyone come back to life and go on to skip in fields just seems contrary to the tone and messaging of the whole show, which is pretty high up on the edginess scale.
i love a bittersweet ending in general, so i’m biased. imo, the joy of a mostly good ending is rendered all that much sweeter by reflecting on what was lost to obtain it. imagine:
alternate ending 1: trevor comes back, the gang lives happily ever after at Belmont Village or wtvr they name it, BUT. we see alucard lost in thought thinking about his parents, how he saw a flash of their souls during the penultimate battle. there’s regret there, the regret of shit left unsaid and shitty family dynamics unsolved. we cut immediately back to hell, with lisa and dracula embracing, maybe whispering a few lines of doomed lovers dialogue and something about their son. they’re in hell, but ultimately, they’re together. cut back to alucard, yanked out of his sad thoughts by his pretty gf who won’t let him get too deep in the weeds. shot pans out of them together with the gang. the end.
alternate ending 2: trevor is DEAD dead. sypha stays with alucard and the gang at belmont farms and raises her kid. maybe we get a 2 year timeskip and we see the little shit have some of his dad in him/her. sypha is sad about trevor but doesn’t mope about it. she runs that town like it’s a business. alucard is the best uncle to that kid & the orphans they could ask for. everyone gets trained in ass-kicking next door at the belmont hold. lisa and dracula are miraculously alive through whatever convoluted bs makes it work, and contemplate one day moving back to see their son. dracula has a moment to realize that his family is mostly human, and what he loves in them he can learn to tolerate from all of humanity.
don’t those feel happy but just. TINGED. with just enough sadness to be more memorable? idk i may just be a masochist.
i haven’t mentioned the technical aspects such as animation and direction because they were amazing. really, really incredible animation that is going to be hard to follow up (and netflix is going to make copycats of this formula, you bet your ass they will). where cgi was used, it was excellent and barely detectable, really well integrated with 2d. so engaging to watch.
overall: 9/10

ep 41: real graham wrote keep watching before he was replaced. Jon feels like he's being watched. But they werent replaced by things related to the eye. It's the web that's on the box that replaces them. Endless hallways and doors to nowhere. I bet nicholas will have ideas what entity this relates to. If it even does. They're like the tunnels in the one with the builder guy. Tunnels closing in etc. Also like the cave diving one. He's assuming it's just one

ep 46: every time books get mentioned i sigh. hhh sus smells. it got brighter. I get the vibes occasionally that the dark and the eye are sorta at odds with eachother. GRRR BARK BARK LEITNER. ayyy ex altiora. entity go brr. which entity do we thing it is? my guess is The Dark. The book buyer's name is Mike. He has scars? Electricity? The childhood friend of the guy who got it later on perhaps? The Vast? its formatted like an entity idk. This happened before the other one. He got trapped in the wood carving. a win for the web lol spiders go brr
ep 47: did i hear spiral? ITS THE NOT THING FROM THE EPISODE WITH NOT GRAHAM "it didnt move, it shifted" is like the exact same sentence as before. ay john's starting to remember. the laughing woah thats weird. is "michael" one of the entities? "you make it seem like theres a war" supports my theory that theres a struggle between a couple of the entities. I said i thought it was the eye and the dark i believe but im not sure. its whatever entity michael is vs the worms? what did nicholas say the worms were again? The Corruption? still dont know which one michael is tho.
Had to take a break after that episode. smth about the quality of michael's voice makes me feel like im gonna slip into one of those states where it feels like nothing is real, so i got a nice cold glass of water.
ep 48: jesus ok this one's kidna corny. you're telling me love made the crowd go away come on now. Ur losing it big J. also shouldnt it be more sus that "sasha" is so unaffected by the worm incident/ finding of gertrude's body

So we know Mary Keay was revived most likely with the book by gerard.
Gertrude was way more aware of the entities than Jon. mary keay referenced The End openly and she cut the eyes out of her magazines and all that which makes me think she was aware of The Eye

ep 72: sweeney todd moment. Meat. The slaughter? Idk we'll see what the supernatural part is. Meat is meat. Similar to the slaughterhouse episode. Is it fucking Jared I swear to God it better not be. Blood and Guilt
Without Hector, the following three days to pass felt like an eternity. The cell was damp, dirty and cold, but you didn't pay much attention as you sat cradling yourself in the corner. 
All you could think about was him and how he was in this position because of you, in pain because of you. It was your fault that he had to spend every night with Lenore. It was your fault that he was suffering from that torture, that violation, that... that trauma. It was all your fault and you were never going to forgive yourself for it.
You had lost all hope, you knew your chances of escaping were slim, your chances of saving him slimmer. There was a pain in your heart, a pain worse than any other. It was as if it was being torn apart, slowly, piece by piece. Each layer of muscle surrounding the beating organ slowly being stripped away. It was agonising knowing that he was in pain, that he was suffering and that there was nothing you could do. You loved him more than anything, more than life itself, and yet, that love was causing you so much hurt.
There was a slight jingle of keys that pulled you from your thoughts, though not enough to cure the poison edging closer to your shattered heart. The jingle continued until the key was pushed into your cell door, the sound of it twisting to the side, the scrape of the metal, was the only noise in the room other than your hollow breath. That was when you realised what day it was.
"Come on little one." Striga was the one to enter the cell, extending a hand to you as the guard waited outside.
You glanced up with cold eyes, no longer thankful to see the very vampire you had almost considered your friend before. "I won't help you, no matter what you plan to do to me if I refuse."
"We know that, little one. That is why we have decided to offer you a reward."
Despite doubting that any reward they could offer you would be worth helping them over, your interest peaked and you raised an eyebrow. "If it's a swift death or even my freedom, I don't want it."
"A night alone with the forgemaster. That is what we offer you."
Your eyes snapped up to meet hers, searching for the slightest sign that she was telling the truth.
"Lenore was reluctant but she knows that Carmilla has the last word. If you do your part in the attack tonight, you and the forgemaster will be granted a night alone in his outhouse. I give you my word."
You thought it over and, after a moment of serious contemplation, decided that even a chance to see him again was worth doing whatever they wanted you to do for them. So, you took Striga's hand and climbed to your feet.
"There's a good girl." Carmilla clapped from outside of the cell, although you were not sure how long she had been there for.
You made no conversation as they brought you through the castle. Striga was quiet too, keeping an eye on you to ensure that you would not step out of line. Carmilla, however, was busy giving you the rundown on what you would be required to do. 
It seemed easy enough, just protect the mercenaries so that they could do their job and occupy the town. Then, once they were finished and the town was theirs all you had to do was signal Carmilla's troops to come in and set up base. Do all of that without fail and not only would you be allowed to live, but you would get to see Hector.
"Striga here will be going with our troops, keeping a close eye on you from behind. If you even step an inch out of line it won't only be you who pays for it. I'll personally make sure that your dear little forgemaster feels a world of pain before I send him to Lenore for the night. Do your job and I won't hurt him, or you," Carmilla warned as she removed the cuff from your wrist, freeing your magic.
It felt liberating when your magic was no longer bound. Magic was a part of you, much like another limb. It hurt when you couldn't use it, it hurt to have it suppressed. It felt suffocating and now it was like you could finally breathe again, your head just above water once again, but only just. There was still that weight looming over you, pulling you down. The guilt. Guilt for hurting him, even if it was indirectly. Lenore was the one hurting him physically but it was your fault so, in a way, it was really you who had caused him harm.
You are unsure if he would ever forgive you or if you would even forgive yourself. He had been through all of this before but then you came along and it stopped, even if only for a short while. Now, however, it was happening all over again, ten times worse than before and it was all your fault. 
Even if he couldn't forgive you, you wanted to see him. To say sorry, to wipe his tears, to hold him one last time. You at least wanted him to know that you hadn't meant for any of this to happen. You wanted to rescue him, to save him, but you had only made it worse. You had given him hope and then taken it all away as he once feared. He told you not to give him hope, some part of him knew something like this would happen. You should have listened to him, you should have been more careful.
"Come on, you're riding with me." One of the larger mercenaries offered you his hand and pulled you up onto the horse.
Of course you were not going to be allowed to ride alone, that would be too risky. So, you sat in front of the man, allowing his arms to uncomfortably cage you, trapping you on the horse with him. 
There was no way to escape, even if you could fight your way through the army of mercenaries, Striga would just come up with Carmilla's soldiers and take you out. Resistance really was futile and, although you wanted no part in wiping out an entire town, you had to think about Hector. You were doing this for him, you needed to keep him safe. As safe as he could be now anyway. You couldn't stop Lenore but you could stop Carmilla from beating him black and blue, not to mention, a night alone with you meant a night away from Lenore. Just one night, but a night that he might actually get some sleep and that, to you, was worth any price you had to pay. If Hector would find comfort for even a moment, it was worth it.
You rode for a couple of hours and by midnight, you had arrived outside of the town.
"This is it?" you asked, climbing down from the horse.
"This is it," The mercenary, who had unfortunately been your riding partner the whole way here, confirmed.
You looked around, noticing the walls. They were tall, only one way in and out. It seems they were ready for the attack or at least knew you were coming. 
The moment one of their watchtowers caught sight of you, the town bell started ringing to signal that they were under attack. The arrows that started flying towards you missed by miles, landing all over the place, not hitting a single mercenary. They were farmers, not soldiers, and this was going to be a massacre.
"You better not fuck this up, witch."
With that, the mercenaries started charging. They raised their shields above their heads, sheltering themselves from the rain of arrows as they approached the gates. 
The gates were large and heavily reinforced. Well made too. This was going to be difficult but once you were inside the battle would be over in a matter of minutes, that you were certain of.
Your chest felt tight. It was at if you couldn't breathe. You knew what would happen if you brought down the gates. All of those innocent people would die. It was all down to you, you were the only person who had the capability to get the gates open. If you just refused, just walked away right now, then the town would have a chance, they could survive.
But Hector.
The more you thought about him the worse it got. Your heart was conflicted. Let the town burn and see Hector again or help the town and see Hector suffer. It should have been a hard decision but it wasn't, not at all, because you loved Hector and there was nothing you wouldn't do for him. Even this. It was scary, your devotion to him, but he was all you had.
You had made your decision and were soon charging at the gates, using your magic to deflect the flying arrows. You screamed when you reached the gates, an image of Hector's face in your mind. His shy smile, the blush on his cheeks. You wanted to see it again, you wanted to see him again. And so, you threw your arms towards the gates with every ounce of energy you could possibly muster. 
A huge burst of energy flew out of you, only enhanced by your scream, and the gates swung open. The mercenaries flooded in, slaughtering the civilians as they ransacked the town. You had to close your eyes for a moment, trying to shut out the screams, to shut out everything and, for a while, it worked. You charged through, deflecting arrows and swords alike as you protected the mercenaries.
By the time the screaming stopped, blood soaked through the streets, running like a river. Corpses littered the town, men, women and children alike. The doors of family homes were torn down nothing inside left unturned.
You sent up the fire signal to inform Striga that it was over, that it was safe for her and her soldiers to come in.
A single tear ran down your face as the man in charge patted you on the back. "Well done, you did good."
Without even sparing him a glance, you began to walk through the town. You took in the view of carnage and used your magic to put out any fires on the way. This was your fault, everything was your fault. First Hector, and now this town. Everyone around you suffered and it was all your fault.
Your ears picked up on a sound, a quiet sobbing, and your feet halted. You followed the sound until you found yourself in front of an old wardrobe. A dead family lied behind you, their blood soaking into the floorboards. Drip, drip, drip down the steps by the door. 
Hesitantly, you reached out and pulled the doors open to reveal a small boy. He continued to sob, looking up at you with fear in his eyes. You shushed him and tried to show that you meant him no harm.
"It's okay. Come here, I won't hurt you. I promise." Your voice cracked, your own tears threatening to spill as you reached out to the child.
He seemed scared at first but soon allowed you to lift him out of the wardrobe. You softly stroked his hair and held his head against your shoulder in hopes of shielding him from the bodies of his family as you carried him out of his broken home.
"Ah, look here. Looks like we have a survivor, hand him over." The mercenaries looked at you expectantly, their swords raised.
However, you only held the child tighter. "No. He's just a child. We can let him go."
"I don't think so. Our instructions were to take out the town and that is what we intend to do so hand him over."
"NO!" you yelled, holding up a ball of flames with your free hand.
The mercenaries were about to kill you too but a voice carried in a thick accent stopped them, "Leave him. She is right. He is just a child, it won't harm us to let him live."
You released a relieved breath and continued to cradle the small boy, putting the fire away.
"Yes ma'am," the mercenary in charge obeyed and they all lowered their weapons as well.
You glanced at Striga, nodding your head slightly in gratitude. She was a vampire but she wasn't completely void of compassion, or maybe she was only doing this to keep you from burning her army to ashes. Either way, you were grateful.
"You will camp here tonight and return with the mercenaries in the morning. I will head back now, our soldiers know what to do," Striga informed before getting back up onto her horse and galloping away.
That night, the boy didn't make another sound. Nor did he leave your side, his small hands holding onto you because, despite everything, you had protected him. Children had good instincts and he knew you weren't a bad person, or maybe he was just more afraid of everyone else. Either way, he slept soundly in your arms, knowing that you were going to keep him safe.

Sixteen    The DeSlaughter House
2    The Shed
The shed was, technically, on Peter’s family’s property, although he had learned that fact from the boys that had dared him to go in it.  As far as Peter knew, their property ended in a line that cut across the lake. Peter had found the shed and the free-standing chimney the first year they had moved there, of course.  He had gone inside more than once, looking for owls’ nests or foxes dens.  But the last time he had gone in, he had discovered it was a human boy nest, with some obvious attempts at a clubhouse and some magazines featuring naked girls. He never went back inside.
That’s where they were headed that last day of school, the last day that Buster and Buddy Greenleaf suddenly got chummy with Peter and said they wanted to “hang out” to “shoot the shit.”  Peter was suspicious of course, but in the end he joined them.  
Walking home with a crowd of boys, at least he wouldn’t have to worry about dodging hand-holding, and marriage proposals, from Missy Lovelace.
And it had been educational, sort of.  
He had heard the story of Tom Dylan Post before, and had known that the man had disappeared after murdering his girlfriend.  What he did NOT know was that the intact fireplace-and-chimney that stood apart from the shed had been Tom Dylan’s house, and that it had been burned down by angry townspeople who couldn’t find the man.  “They would have burned down the house you live in too,” Buster had informed him.  “But you know, the ghost.”
“That’s a pretty helpful ghost, I’d say,” Peter posited.  That got a laugh.  They had seemed friendly, Peter remembered.    Even with Mike’s warning, the day up until the shed was a happy memory. School was out.  Summer was starting.  Summer meant endless library time, uninterrupted by pointless schoolwork. Summer meant three months free from hand-holding and marriage proposals from Missy Lovelace.  (And Summer meant Autumn.  And Autumn meant Tony.)
“I still don’t see why I’m supposed to be afraid of a “haunted shed” that is on my property, and I told you, I’ve been there twice…” he had said boldly as they approached the shed from the south.  They were headed north, directly facing Peter’s house.  Peter felt 6 feet tall.  On his own property, facing his own “haunted house” he didn’t feel awkward or tongue-tied at all.  He could crack dirty jokes and swore just like they could.  Suddenly fitting in with this ghost-story telling, wise-cracking crowd of boys didn’t seem like such a herculean task at all.  Sure, they liked to shoot animals and he liked to study animals, but Mike’s dad liked to study animals too.  Sure they wanted to drop out of school when they turned 18 and Peter wanted to go to college, but Mike wanted to go to college too.  
And sure, they wanted to trick him into going into a shed to discover some girly magazine, a Playboy or a Penthouse, and peter could do that too.  It was gross and disgusting, but a lot of science was gross and disgusting. He figured it out as they approached the shed, stealing himself up for the moment.  Dissecting frogs and fetal pigs and cows hearts was gross too, and he was looking forward to doing all of that if they let him take the senior science class next year.   A naked woman wasn’t any more gross than that, was it?  Well, yes it was, but it was a gross he could handle.  He was ready.  And he had a plan.
“That shed has got ghosts AND snakes, and that’s why we dare you, cuz’ YOU claim you ain’t afraid of either, Parker,” Buddy was sneering, but Peter waved him off.  Of course he wasn’t afraid of snakes, because he knew whatever was in there wasn’t venomous.  He knew because of Tony.  And he wasn’t afraid of Playboys, either.  Grossed out, yes.  But not afraid.  He had a plan.
“Come on, you’re just stalling.  You’re as slow as Christmas.  Quit draggin’ your feet,” the boys hectored as Peter and Mike examined the lone chimney and fireplace, talking to teach other excitedly about how the cabin must have been situated around it.  Peter hadn’t spent much time examining the chimney after he determined nothing was living inside it, now, knowing it was part of the Post Family’s history.  
“Hey Slaughter-man, quit yackin’ about chimney and tell Pussy-boy to go in the shed!  We dared him!”
“Shut the fuck up Buster!” Mike had yelled back, and Peter had thrown up his hands in between them both and made a joke.  
And, just like that, for just that moment, he had felt it.  Something he hadn’t felt since New York City.  That feeling of home.  He was hanging out with his friends.  They were trading ghost-stories and trashtalk and dares, and he was playing peace-keeper when voices were raised.  Just like he had in the city.  He was laughing as he walked toward the shed.  He felt completely carefree.
“Hey Mr. Post!  Mr…. what was his name?  Hey Mr. Murder-guy Post?  Did you know you were famous?”  he called out to what lived in the shed (if there were non-venomous snakes inside, he wanted to give them plenty of warning.  That’s why he stopped to knock on the wall.)
“Hey… Mr. Tom?  Tom Dooly… Dula… Mr. Tom Whateverthehellyournameis…”  
“Oh my god man, stop!”  That was Buddy, a moment of real fear in his voice.  Peter smirked.  But that was Devil’s Holler’ boys for you.  They had no fear of grabbing a girl’s butt or starting a fist fight or handling loaded guns, but they took the Post Ghosts very seriously.  
“Sorry, don’t be mad at Buddy, Mr. Tom-Ghost.  He doesn’t care that you went all Lizzy Borden on your girlfriend.  He says he’s going to kill his girlfriend too.  Axing your girlfriend, that’s heavy.  But for serious,  Just Say No man…”
That’s how he announced himself as he stepped inside the cool darkness of the shed.  Automatically he looked up to see if any owls had moved in since he had last been there, but there was only empty birds’ nests. Probably eastern bluebirds, from the looks of it.  Several brown mud dauber structures as well, he could see.  Nothing interesting.  
Then he remembered what he was supposed to be doing there.  He looked towards the north wall, to see if the boys could see or be seen. But the gap in the wall was grown over with weeds now.  If he stood next to the wood he could look through the bullet holes and see out, but unless they came and stood by the door, they wouldn’t see him.  So he looked for the magazine.
There it was, exactly here he knew it would be.  Dead center on the floor, just so he wouldn’t miss it.   Sitting on an overturned crate, like an offering.  
He picked it up fearlessly and started tumbling through looking for the right picture.  His plan had been to walk up to Buddy and say “Hey look! I found a picture of your mom!” and point at a random page.  He had been planning to do that without even looking at the picture, but had thought better of it.  Not every picture in those magazine was of a naked lady. Some of them were articles.  
The first picture surprised him.
The second picture made him cringe.
But what the men were doing to each other on the third page made him drop the magazine and back away.
For what seemed like several minutes he could move.  His heart was pounding, his face flushed.  He had forgotten how to breathe.  He might have stood that way for an hour if he hadn’t heard something move above his head.  That drew his eyes back the empty bluebird nest.  The mud daubers structures.  The place where the owls weren’t.  That reminded him – he was in the shed.  The boys were outside, pranking him with the magazine.  If they were behind him, looking through the doors they would know…
…they weren’t.  He crept to the north wall.  A quick look through the bullet holes told the truth – they had sent him int here and snuck away.  At least he was alone.
His heart still pounding, as he were an animal being pursued, he turned over the crate and found it empty.  Picking the dirty magazine up by one corner he tossed it into the box and exited the shed through the gap in the south wall.  Then he ran.
A dead oak stood dramatically at the top of the ridge, it’s bare black limbs could be seen grasping towards the sky all the way from the Post Lake.  Under the leaves there Peter shoved the dirty pictures.  Tossing the crate aside, he ran all the way home.
He was back two hours later.
Finding the magazine was alarmingly easy.  It was still there, intact, most of its pages surprisingly legible.  It was like the evil doll in the Twilight Zone, Peter thought grimly as he retrieved the empty crate and tossed the hateful pages back inside. Maybe there’s no point it trying to destroy it.
“But it’s not a doll, it’s pictures on paper,” Peter assured himself.  “Just ink on paper.  And paper is delicate.”  
And that’s why the magazine featuring muscular sweaty men with huge mustaches (for the rest of his life Peter would think of it as the “mustache magazine”) found its new home at the bottom of Post Lake.  Peter walked home and slept easy that night.
He slept in one of the other beds in that hallway, but he slept easy.  The dirty magazine had been completely destroyed.
That way, he could never go back and study those pictures again.

You will never convince me that it's not a combination of sexism and extreme bias towards NFCV, whether it's because it's a Western adaptation that Fleshes Out The Stupid Games, or because it's just NFCV and at this point we start from the point "it's perfect" and work backwards from here.
Yeah, I don't like this logic, but that's what it looks like!

Hector too! While the appeal of BDSM vampire step on me mommy is more of a thing for people attracted to women I think, I see how female fans treat show Hector (men seem to mostly joke about him being a simp which is also incorrect), and it's so fucking blatant that his appeal is being the cutest saddest wettest kitten ever. You're not rooting for a character, you're crying for the chew toy with 🥺 eyes and (allegedly) pretty hair. The Metroid games don't do this. Even OM, as awful as it is, as inappropriately it shoves Samus' ass in some scenes, as terribly disrespectful and sexist it is against one of the most beloved female videogame protagonists of all time... I never got the feeling that her tits and ass were being dangled like keys in front of me in the hopes that the horny overrode my logical thinking. That's what NFCV does. Whether it's with the cool fighting scenes, or the long pseudo-deep filibusters, or pretty boys hurting, the show hides behind all sorts of fanservice and gets away with appalling writing, both quality-wise and moral-wise.

Just-Watched Thoughts on S3
Alright time to write this while I’m still here recovering so I can go to bed already. I might add more/clean this up once I get some proper sleep. Tagging it but putting Castlevania Season 3 spoilers under a cut just in case people haven’t got tags hidden and such. Here goes-
Overall I’m honestly just kinda shocked? I think it’s because a lot of things were easy to predict (that the cult might be trying to bring back Dracula, something was up with the Judge, Hector was obviously gonna fall for Lenore’s bs, etc.) so when things happened I didn’t see from a mile away.. 
When I was only like an episode or two in, things actually felt a little stunted to me? Something about it felt like “This is what people liked from before, right??” particularly with certain action or such, but I feel like it picked up pretty quickly from that. I’m still kinda in winding-down-emotions mode so I can’t really definitively say what storylines I liked and which ones I disliked for the most part. I liked Isaac’s, and the design of the... Hivemind Magician? Was all pretty sick. It felt like the first thing that was actually a massive challenge for him, and nearly overtook him, but he overcame it and even came out of it thinking through what he wanted for the future. It’s a nice change from seeing him steamroll anything that came his way. 
I like that Trevor and Sypha’s storyline ends up with them not getting their heroic grand time like they did last time. Yes, there were sacrifices made, but before it still felt grandiose: they’d worked together to kill Dracula, something the world didn’t even think possible for the most part. This time, they sacrificed a lot more and ultimately didn’t win a thing other than their own lives, and were helping a hidden monster in their process of killing other monsters. What a crushing thing for them to have to go through, and I think Trevor’s conversation with himself before (and later with said monster, ironically enough) about missing parts of his old non-heroic non-adventuring life was pretty somber and interesting. 
The whole Lenore/Hector route was exactly what’s expected from the beginning, but it was done well for what it was, and I don’t think they were trying to fool anyone with the direction it was headed. Carmilla’s plot was.. eh, more or less not much seemed to actually happen, but it did introduce us to the awesome vampire sisters so I’m more than down with it. I wish we got a little more about Saint Germain’s whole deal with that portal and such, who he was looking for and how he knows they’re still alive in there, but I assume that’s a next-season kind of thing. I’m gonna ramble if I write anymore so here’s a more concise/clear list:
Things I liked -  Trevor and Sypha’s chemistry! I thought it was good the first couple seasons (which apparently puts me in the minority?) but they felt much more compatible as a couple this time around. The little exchange about the “taste for rougher things in life” is wonderful, and I definitely snorted when she sleep-bapped him in the face. - The tidbits of funny dialogue! Seems to still be a show specialty. Some of them were understandably a bit funny (using “Nope! speedwalks away” in place of “shut it” is pretty good), and others weren’t funny but I just found it hilarious (e.g. Morana’s repeated fancily-stated things that boiled down to “... Lenore, seriously, TMI”) - The soundtrack! Not really any surprise, despite it not being the famous Symphony of the Night tracks people clamored for trust me I totally get that and despite it still not being released even from season 2 much less 3,  it was very nice to listen to.  - The vampire sisters! While it was obvious from the beginning Lenore was the “cutest/nonthreateningest-looking of the scary bunch but actually the scariest” one I liked the energy they all had, especially Striga and Morana and their relationship. I liked that we got to see Carmilla’s attitude bouncing off of other vampires who (while respecting her skill) also called her out for it from time to time. - The references! I’m sure there’s more and I’m a dumbass who only spots the obvious ones, but... the fact there’s demons that’re exactly ones out of the ol’ Symphony of the Night game again, like the Malachi and Fire Demon. It’s so dumb but I love shit like that, especially since they obviously stray far from the game canon and don’t have to do that but do it anyway. - Some of the action scenes. I cannot mention what I like without mentioning the parts that made me go “... Okay, yeah, that was badass.” You know the ones! When Cho busted that sword with her hands, when Sypha chopped that angel-like demon into pieces. ... A lot of the stuff Sypha did, actually, I’m glad she got some more epic moments to kick ass this season. I thought the earlier action scenes of the season were just alright, but by the last fight it was definitely starting to feel like that awesome dynamic fight style we saw in season 2. - The fact Dracula saw an opportunity to return and didn’t want to. Not much to say here other than the obvious - I feel like that’s extremely fitting, and I’m glad they made it clear without bringing him back and having him be angry/regret it or something like that. Without any dialogue, even. - The ending.. somewhat. It destroyed me a little on the inside, but I actually like that nobody really had a happy ending. Particularly if there could be another season, it feels really fitting. I’ve seen some people complaining “They ended up where they started! Trevor and Sypha are back on the road, Isaac’s traveling with his army, Alucard’s alone in the castle and Hector is a slave” but I couldn’t disagree more. Of course if you boil it down to the words themselves, it’s “the same,” but did ya see the sheer trauma literally everyone was put through? Obviously some had it worse than others (and we’ll fucking get to that) but nobody came out unscathed. Everyone’s now had some belief challenged or retreated further into a fear/mistrust that already existed - previous events planted the seed for it and the hell the cast went through gave it growth. 
Trevor and Sypha are going to have to challenge their goal they’d been following since working together/getting together: they can’t just go headlong adventuring and fixing people’s problems, because things like this can happen. Their new allies and the entire town were slaughtered or trapped somewhere, and the man they’d trusted and been helping this entire time was a serial killer, particularly of children. Alucard is drifting into a state of consciousness not unlike his father before he met Lisa, but potentially in a worse place since he’s witnessed and felt true kindness, but has retreated away from it even so due to the betrayal he’s suffered at an already-fragile time for him. Isaac has to reconsider what he’s going to do once he has his proper army, and even if it’s worth it to get his revenge or to carry out Dracula’s original plans. Saint Germain.. I mean, he’s in psychodelic hell searching for that person and presumably a way out, I assume it’s tragic. Hector’s learned a hard lesson in trusting and is going to have to figure out if his freedom is worth risking pain or death. Likewise I think the characters grow this way. Even if it was a happy ending, or an ending where everyone “wins” some small victory somehow, I think it’d ultimately have been worthless if nobody was fundamentally changed by the end of the season.
Things I didn’t like - The sex scenes. I’ve seen a lot of people like “If you’re gonna put in gratuitous sex then actually include Trevor and Sypha??” and I’m gonna have to disagree with that. While I love the ship and all, I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt and say sex scenes weren’t thrown around randomly or just to flex the rating - they were only tied to actual story, hence why I’m down with the bedroom stuff of the show’s main ship only being alluded to. However, I gotta say that the long broken-up sex scenes mixed with battle/action was not the way to do that. I think I know what they were going for (it definitely drove my anxiety up having those scenes back to back with intense action/violence, I can tell ya that!), but it just wasn’t a good idea. Yes, they were obviously made to be uncomfortable (particularly since I’m pretty sure one of them was dubious consent at best?) but that was reflected well just in a few key frames/actions - it didn’t need to be drawn out and mixed with the action. It made me want to skip through (I didn’t out of fear I’d miss battles, which isn’t really good design) and I’d like to bet parts of the finale are unwatchable for some. For the record, yes you could say “well they got into an adult-rated show, deal with it,” but the fact of the matter is up until now sexual violence/discomfort wasn’t heavy-handed and in-your-face like this. Non-sexual violence was definitely all over the whole series, but it’s still a bit like whiplash considering. Also, the fact people think the scene with Alucard was at all chill. I see it from a story standpoint (though I honestly think their motivations were weak and there’s other ways to betray someone/get their guard down), but I think the people going on about “power bottom” and this and that are forgetting that the absence of a no is not a yes, particularly with someone severely emotionally damaged after spending months alone not only without a support group but without any contact, immediately following the death of his father by his own hands. I’m no expert but I don’t think that’s someone in the proper state of mind to consent to anything sexual, even if there were a couple weeks or whatever of spending time with these new friends. He very well might’ve been on the way to a stress disorder before they turned his world upside-down and frankly I’m wondering how he’s going to be faring come the next season (assuming there is one.) That’s more of a fandom gripe than the show itself I suppose but it’s worth a mention. - The pacing. It’s hard to pinpoint it, but something about it felt off, especially in the first half. The best way I can describe it is when you pump the gas and brakes because your brakes aren’t working great and you’re loosening them up - maybe it was necessary to get things going, but it’s a bit destabilizing/odd for anyone in the car. I think it’s what contributed to that stunted sense I got until things picked up a little more. You can see it more in just how packed with stuff the latter half is, some things which could’ve been planned a bit better through the whole season. - Sumi and Taka. I honestly felt that they wanted to get in a way to have a punch-in-the-gut arc with Alucard (not a bad idea, I am one for tragedy), wanted to kill off some characters who were actually important, and decided to do these both with one stone. I don’t think they were successful on the second part, because these two absolutely contributed to the stunted feeling I had about some of the season. They had a good start in terms of backstory, and the idea of two people working together to fight vampires without having some big legend tied to their name to drive it (e.g. Speaker magicians, Belmont legacy, Alucard’s heritage), as well as a connection to/fleshing out of one of the nameless generals, sounded like a great concept. A great concept, but it was rushed I felt, to the point that their motivations for turning on him were so packed and squished in they just weren’t believable if we’re supposed to believe these two were sane. They had some sort of mental/trust issues due to their backstory - that’s fine, and could contribute some emotional problems. However if their distrust in Alucard had been given more time to fester and grow, more little comments of Alucard’s brushing off their attempts to learn about specific things, and more cues from him that could be misinterpreted by them as him causing trouble and lying (not just them not believing him by itself), it would be more believable that the past and misinterpretations of the present get into their head and poison their thoughts of him. You can plant a seed of doubt but just like any other character bonds, it has to be given time to grow. Alucard’s rapid bonding with them could be attributed to his loneliness, trauma, and need for a support system, but you can’t make that excuse for Sumi and Taka’s motivations going from “Hm.. I wonder what he isn’t telling us” to “We need to emotionally gut him and then kill him” basically overnight. Edit:
I forgot to add a conclusion last night, so I guess the TL;DR is season 3’s a good 7.5/10 for me, -1 for the overall pacing, -1 for missing a bit of the punch from before, and -0.5 because the last few episodes jumped me with a bat and I let it happen.

The Tides That Refused To Turn
So much had happened in one day.
He continued to talk around camp— talk, talk, until his voice and energy both gave out. It sucked talking to so many people, especially when he looked just plain disappointing in front of all of these figures of history. And now to learn that truly everything was a lie. After reading so much about Seiros, about how much she was revered... Takumi could only make one personal judgment watching Seiros declare that she wanted to water the Tailtean Plains in the blood of the army he had grown attached to (in the blood of the army of the allies she supposedly had).
If he had a bow and one arrow, and was locked in the same room with King Garon and Seiros... He'd find some way to shoot himself as quickly as humanly possible.
Seriously. When he was comparing Seiros to the mad king of Nohr that ambushed and killed his own father and kidnapped his own brother all in one day for fuck knows what reason... That was awful. And this was one day of knowing Seiros in person compared to dealing with King Garon's oppressive force for years on end. If he somehow ended up back at Garreg Mach, he'd have to restrain himself from decking Archbishop Rhea. He may get executed for it, but it probably would be worth it. Maybe.
Considering their situation, Takumi called everyone once more to their tent for a meeting similar to how he felt when he first was lied to. And he was even more fuming this time. There was no pacing, no avoiding of eye contact— just a fierce gaze that met everyone over a small table he stood behind. Even Xander. Especially Xander.
"Let's see if I got everyone... Leonardo. Merric. Clarine. Annette. Maribelle. Hector... Xander," Takumi said, addressing them all by name. "We are faced with the greatest lie Fódlan has ever told us. After reading who knows how many books about Seiros, hearing all about her... I will not lie to any of you. I am beyond infuriated," Takumi slammed his fist on the table, "—that the entire continent would brainwash people into believing that that psychopathic bitch out there was a good and fair maiden willing to work with all of the people in this camp! And here we're seeing her wanting to slaughter them all! And that man, Hresvelg... It's only because of him that the other Elites would even be spared, just for Nemesis... But why!?" Takumi gritted his teeth. "Why Nemesis!? It doesn't make any sense!"
Takumi took a deep breath. "Sorry. I know I'm still addressing a crowd... Here's the plan." Takumi determinedly stared at all of them. "What happens from now on is up to you all. We're still neutral parties. However, it's not too late for us to join a side in this war. And good news! We already know Seiros wins this war! Isn't that nice?" Takumi looks annoyed once more, but calms down. "...But maybe it doesn't have to be this way. If you all allied with the Elites... I dunno. I know there's only seven of you, but maybe it'd make the difference, you know?"
A pause. Seven of you. Great. He blew his cover.
"...Don't look at me like I just said something stupid! It was a slip of the tongue!" Takumi looked away. "I'm just... going to collect a bit more information and I don't know if I'll..." Takumi coughed. "Anyways. What are you all going to do? Are we going to stay and fight with the Elites? Or will we secure safety in Seiros' army? I'm not forcing any decisions here... but I think it's best if we stay together, you know?..."
