I wonder how they made the purgatory 2 teams ... like with purgatory 1 you could tell they were tryign to break up most of the pre-established relationships for the sake of drama. but with purgatory 2 there are multiple team-ups of people who really really wanted to be teamed together - for example, etoiles, who joined purgatory 2 specifically to play with kenny, got to be teamed with him. plus iirc they did do team balancing to a certain extent (and also didnt team any purgatory 1 players with each other). so I wonder if they went the MCC/block wars/pandoras box route of "google form that asks you who youd like to be teamed with"! I feel like that would account for some of the interesting/unexpected decisions especially amongst new players (eg. Rodezel, who really wanted to be teamed with Bad)

#from an events standpoint it looks like purg2 is going to be a lot cleaner than purg1 #i think the issues w purg1 stem from a) the creators not expecting 2 be thrust into a competitive event b) the destabilization it aimed for #3) rules and balancing changing daily and things not being explain÷ #explained <- this is interesting for lore but bad for game design #4) high stakes high tension surrounding fhe safety of fictional children ppl get up in arms abt that #purg1 was an experiment which has been refined into purg2 and overall i think it will work better in this revised form #the shorter time frame will be good for tension and not dragging things out too long #but ill miss some of the downtime and quieter moments purg1 was able to offer i think #the way the players had time to discuss and adjust and strategize and attempt to bargain with each other #i get the feeling most of the connections made in purg2 will be between players in each team as opposed to across them #which isnt bad just different #idk! im very hopeful! the community response so far has been 1 million times better than for purg1 so i have faith #qsmp #qpurgatory 2 #bearvocalizations

At the bus stop one time there was a gaggle of preschoolers waiting to catch the bus for a field trip day, and someone walked past with a couple of friendly little dogs, to great general delight.

But after a little bit, the dogs were getting overwhelmed, and the preschoolers were gently coaxed to back off so the person with the dogs could continue on. Specifically, one of the preschool teachers said, "Sometimes, when you're small, being surrounded by big people can be a bit scary and overwhelming. Even if they are friendly."

This was recieved as great wisdom: after all, the preschoolers were also small, and understood how scary and overwhelming big people could be! And the dogs were indeed even smaller than the preschoolers, so it made sense.

What was funny and charming was that, upon absorbing and reflecting on this wisdom, they all felt the need to tell it to one another. In tones of great insight, they turned to one another and said, "Did you know? Sometimes when you are small, being surrounded by big people can be scary and overwhelming! Even if they are friendly!" Back and forth, without any particular concern that they were all saying the same thing. Have reached comprehension of an insight, it must be shared!

I must say that this behavior is less charming in tumblr users than in preschoolers. Not least because tumblr users, having gained a little analytical skill to misuse, insist on Summarizing and Generalizing and Unifying the insights they repeat, quickly turning any interesting new information into formulaic dogmatic mush.

yoooo ok that last job turning out to be bullshit might actually be a blessing in disguise because I just landed an interview for an after school theater teacher gig that pays way better~ I went to theater camp every year from ages 12 to 17 and always loved the idea of being a counselor for a program like that, and did backstage / dramaturg work for a play at UCSB back in pre-pandemic 2020 so I might actually have a shot at this. Wish me luck!

Welp, I've finished the season 4 special...

Anyway-

#the finale wasn't bad btw. It's just it coupled with season 4 and 3 has me tired #I'm sure a lot of people like it #I'm honestly just really tired #I think I've just fallen deeply out of love with lmk #which is sad cause it had me by a chokehold for years #I could rant but I no longer like the show enough to give such an emotional response #Season 3 was already very high stakes and emotional. Season 4 did not need to be #even if I agreed with all the decisions they made. Having 2 high stakes world ending situations with so much angst is emotionally exhaustin #what drew me to lmk to begin with was the villain of the week format it had going #low stakes episodical things with super fun and endearing characters yk #sure they could have an overarching story. one of my biggest pet peeves and my smallest hill to die on is when people act like parchment is just The Old Fashioned Paper, or worse, use those terms interchangeably. it’s especially egregious in the fantasy genre, of course.

and i can kind of see how they got there: a lot of surviving texts from medieval europe are on parchment and that influences the way people perceive things; because ofc western fantasy draws a LOT of things from medieval times, that just gets exported along with the ideas that thatched houses are constantly falling apart and gothic churches come pre-blackened with soot

there’s a lot of ground to cover with the history of the written word, but the thing about paper is that it really took off because the gutenberg press made it fast and cheap to make books and paper was CHEAP and much easier to produce. parchment is expensive and, quite frankly, a much more limited resource (and it also didn’t disappear after the printing press took off. i’ve seen books printed on vellum, but by that point it was for the novelty/explicitly because it was so expensive). but it does have significant longevity vs paper, so of course it was usually reserved for important cultural items. people wouldn’t be using parchment to make a flyer for the county fair or to advertise a job, and probably only used it for correspondence if they’re very rich. granted, before the printing boom galvanized literacy levels (because it made reading material cheaper and more accessible), generally only rich people were literate and would have a need for something to read and write on, but there have been pamphlets forever

paper existed before the 13th century and honestly, whether it was anachronistic in real life shouldn’t bother you in a made up setting and anyway PLEASE remember that paper and parchment are not the same thing

I'm enjoying the fontaine storyline so far I feel like it's progressing the plot forward a good amount and we're getting some rlly cool and important lore info but I Am sort of like. can we solve an insane crisis now. can we have a boss fight please. one problem with dnd is that, to some extent, you kinda have to do Getting A Good Grade In Therapy conversations sometimes because you don't get to control the entire narrative or anyone else's characters, so if you want people to know what your character is really thinking or feeling then eventually you kinda just have to say it out loud, and the problem with that is that sometimes you're playing a character who is really not very good at even knowing what they are thinking or feeling themselves in the first place

#eventually 'elyss is bad at introspection and putting her feelings into words' breaks under the pressure of 'I want it out there' #melliwyk? doesn't even recognize the Problems #like elyss will Become Distressed (or whatever) and need to chew on why for preferably seven to eight business weeks #and is bad at communication in general and worse at articulating her feelings #but I've recently realized how much of the stress mel is under is EXPONENTIALLY multiplied by the fact that #until Now her field of study was essentially a dead end. and like she's always worked tirelessly and enthusiastically but #especially in the last decade or so there was just straight up a lot less she COULD work on #she spent a lot of time reading and theorizing and honestly had a lot of downtime #and now she very suddenly has to work on EVERY PROBLEM AND PROJECT ON EARTH. Today's success: I managed to nope out of a book after the first 10 or so pages made it clear that I didn't like it.

#Take that FOMO #My time is too precious to spend it with books that make mistakes about how glaciers work #eps. when that's a major setting in one of the first scenes #and I don't get a reason to be invested in the characters because I'm told more about them than I am shown #and I feel like there's a wall of glass between me and them - I don't really get to be in their head #But they are instantly thrown into very high stakes situations #I'm told they have a good reason to [do the thing] but I don't feel the urgency the situation would warrant #I would have started the story in a different scene as to avoid the high stakes scene in the beginning #which seems to be intended as a hook #but high stakes as an opening sequence work better if we're IN the character's head and emotions rather than being told #So.
