WOW, it's literally been years but on the off chance you see this, I hope you enjoy! Thanks for the request, I'm obsessed with Gin so never hesitate to request him lol

[ reader is written with she/her pronouns, takes place during the end of soul society arc when Gin is leaving with Aizen, reader is the adopted daughter of (guess who hehe)]

33. "Don't leave me behind."

“ICHIMARU!”

Gin barely had time to be surprised at the voice barreling towards him before he was deflecting her sword from his throat.

“y/n…recovered already?”

She looked up at him with a fiery rage he hadn’t seen before, her teeth tightly grit as another yell of anguish escaped her. Her sword lifted again and they began to clash. Gin was faster and stronger, but he humored her. They exchanged familiar blows, dancing around each other. He could feel the strength she was putting into each thrust of her sword. This was not a game, this was pure unbridled emotion.

She jumped high in the air, flipping over him with a tight grip on his collar as she brought her sword down at his back. He was quick to dodge her blow, their swords clanging loudly as they met.

She was weaker than normal. Gin may have been a bit more on guard if she had not been injured. She was strong in her own right and coupled with the raw passion and anger she was feeling, it would be a dangerous combination. She swung again, stumbling slightly on her weakened leg--and there was his opening.

He caught her wrist in a vice grip, her sword clambering to the ground. He twisted just enough to hurt but not enough to injure. She cried in anger and frustration, struggling vehemently in his hold. He only just noticed the tears streaming down her face.

“What the fuck are you doing?! Do you think you can just up and leave after all this? I’ll kill you before you get the chance!” Her words were deadly serious despite her red face and teary eyes. Her chest heaved and her hair was flailing wildly behind her with every word she screamed. Gin had never in their hundred-something years together, seen her so upset.

Gin didn’t let a single emotion betray him. His usual grin was in place. He sighed, shaking his head as he gripped her wrist tighter and pulled her into his chest. He could feel the stares from everyone around them and he faintly heard her adopted father attempting to intervene, Shunsui’s stern hand on his shoulder being the only thing holding him back. She continued to struggle in his unwavering embrace but her head was buried in his chest and he could feel her warm, wet, tears seeping into the front of his uniform.

“Take me with you.” Her plea was small, quiet, pitiful and for Gin’s ears only.

Oh. That was not an option he had accounted for.

His mind began to race through dozens of scenarios at that moment. The best for him, the best for her, the best for Rangiku, the best for them all…

The outcome of each was…uncertain, and Gin was an incredibly selfish man.

He tightened his grip, her struggle dying down to a mere shaking of her shoulders as she sobbed into his chest.

“Take me with you…” she repeated, choking the words out through a sob.

He chanced a glance at Aizen, the man’s eyes giving him a warning in return. Time was almost up.

Gin smoothed a gentle hand through her hair, leaning down to speak where only she could hear.

“You don’t even know what-”

Her eyes met his, cutting him off effectively with the intensity of her stare.

“If it’s you, it’s something worthwhile. I won’t be left behind.”

Gin could have kissed her then and there. She made choices so easy for him.

The air around them began to crackle with warmth and power.

“Shoot to kill…” he had never so gently uttered those words.

In a split second, his sword pierced through her middle and a cry of anguish that could only come from a panicked father filled the air. An inescapable yellow light descended upon them, stopping all who rushed to her aid. She looked at him wide-eyed, shocked but not betrayed as she lost consciousness. He caught her gently, holding her in his arms like a prize he’d won as they slowly descended upwards.

Someone was screaming below them, his sword slashing manically but unsuccessfully at the shining barrier. Warm blood dripped down Gin’s arms and covered his front. He gripped her tighter to shield his shaking hands, his smile never faltering.

OKAY PRESENTING BLEACH RUPAULS DRAG RACE ARC

(guys im legitimately losing my mind guys guys guys today)... anyway

introducing your queens:

a collection of my faves/ you know they would just s l a y (i’m looking at you rangi/shunsui/rose/yumichika/kenpachi)

i just randomised stats EXCEPT for shinji bc i had to go back and edit his image and his design stat was like 3 and i was like rude so i went back and kept randomising until it was high and that just happened to be 15 (the highest oops) because we all know!! shinji is peak fashioN he was DEFINITELY wearing early balenciaga and chanel and whatever back in his exile days !!! i read a mag on early balenciaga and i know they really only made womans clothes but he would definitely had been wearing some of those coats and it (and also i cant recall fash brands off the top of my head so dont come for me pls ;;;)

altho i won’t bore you with what stats the engine did come up with i will say:

- Hisagi’s acting stat is 0 (true) and his comedy stat is 15 (this feels right bc him being flustered at his own expense is peak bleach comedy)

- Aizen’s acting stat is 15 (TRUE but his improv stat is 0 :ooo)

- Byakuya’s dance stat is 14 (lol)

- BUT ROSE’S IS 15 (how did the randomiser know :0) but his lipsync is 4 lmao

- KENPACHI’S DANCE STATE IS ALSO 15 ALSKDFJAS;LDKFJA

- Rangiku’s comedy stat is 13 (t r u e!)

- Ishida has pretty low stats all round my poor bb ;; (i guess that’s what he gets for being a quincy in shinigami drag race </3)

Predictions: honestly i can see Aizen or Byakuya taking this out, possibly Shinji. I reckon Ishida is gonna be at the bottom in the beginning but survive due to a good lipsync stat anyway im so excited and took so long setting this up so

I'm bad with coming up with birthdays for my OCs just cause I overthink the shit out of them so I just use preexisting days as a base. So here's just all the ones I have so far and where I get them from I guess?

Sojun-ko Kuchiki: 4/22 (Earth Day, also because it's in spring, because of Zanpakuto's name (Shinyusakura))

Yoshi Kuchiki: 3/20 (In Poison Prevention Week, because his Zanpakuto has poison abilities)

Aisha Kira: 11/2 (Day of the Dead, chosen for its significance of Marigolds, and Squad 3's flower is marigolds)

Akari Ayasegawa: 3/25 (national peacock day, for obvious reasons)

Aoi Ise: 7/11 (Same bday as his great-uncle Shunsui, hammering home their handful of similarities)

Yukina Shihouin: 10/29 (national cat day, also for obvious reasons)

Hitoshi Hitsugaya: 8/10 (pretty sure it's the day Thor made his comic debut, chosen because Hitoshi's Zanpakuto revolves around stormy weather, with an emphasis on lightning)

A friend and IR shipper presented to me the idea that Kino intended to give Ichigo and Rukia a romantic climax where they confess their feelings for each other but are unable to be together, thus the end pairings. How viable is this theory, and do you have any thoughts to add?

I guess my first question would be, what is the basis for this? Besides the fact that ichiruki fans (incorrectly) interpreted Ichigo and Rukia's bond to be romantic. When we consider that neither Ichigo or Rukia's supposed romantic feelings for each other were ever mentioned/addressed/cemented in canon, so there was no "loose end" to tie up there, nothing that called for a resolution of reciprocation or rejection from either party on either side (unlike Orihime's romantic feelings, for example, which were cemented in canon and referenced consistently enough throughout the series to call for a resolution, whether it be rejection or reciprocation, from Ichigo). But if Kubo's intention all along was to give Ichigo and Rukia a romantic climax where they finally confessed their hidden feelings for each other in the very end....why exactly didn't he do that then? What stopped that from happening? Why would they be "unable" to be together? Like, what's the reasoning behind that?

I mean, IR's will wax poetic about how Ichigo and Rukia are "fated lovers!!" and "the story of destiny!!" so if they were so incredibly destined to be together....what exactly stopped Kubo from putting them together?? (Unless, of course, it's because those fans were wrong about it being romantic in the first place).

lol do you see what I mean? There was nothing--nothing stopping him from making them endgame, if that's what he truly wanted. If they're saying they were "unable" to be together because they live in different worlds (even though, as we saw in the final chapter and this new arc, they're clearly still able to visit and communicate with each other), Kubo could have had Ichigo relocate to SS (remember when Shunsui gave that morbid threat about Ichigo possibly having to stay there permanently? It's not like that was some impossibility). Or, he simply could have had them remain in their separate worlds but still be in love and committed to each other despite the occasional distance because, remember, they're ~fated lovers~ right? Nothing can get in the way of their powerful love! Especially not a little thing like distance. It's the story of destiny!! ...Except, it wasn't romantic.

So then the question comes back around to, why wasn't it romantic? Why was it more important to Kubo for him to give Orihime the canon love for Ichigo way back at the start of the series, instead of giving Rukia the canon love for Ichigo from the start? Or Ichigo the canon love for Rukia...? If Orihime's love was going nowhere and IR was meant to be endgame all along....why would he waste time giving the one and only canon love for Ichigo to Orihime and a doomed ship like IH instead, in a series where he didn't want to focus too much on romance? This is why I've always said it's better for a pairing to be one-sided than zero-sided when weighing their potential for canon. He gave Orihime the canon love early on in the story, because he knew it would be reciprocated in the end. It's that simple.

Again, there was nothing stopping Kubo from making IR romantic right from the start, or in the middle, or in the very end if that's what he really wanted or intended. If anything, he had a huge incentive to make it romantic based on how popular it was. He knew IR was the most popular pairing, and once Bleach sales started to decline after the SS arc, you can bet that his editors were telling him that a surefire way to gain back fans would be to add some IR romance, or at the very least, write more interactions for them into the story.

...But yet the amount of IR screentime and interactions still drastically declined in the last 65% of the manga, as I outlined here. So, it's not like he was writing all of this IR up until the final arc or final few chapters and then suddenly pulled a switcher-oo and swapped the pairings in the end. IH development and screentime had long since surpassed IR's at that point, while Rukia was attached to Renji's hip ever since they reunited in the SS arc (for which Renji literally thanked Ichigo, for "getting them back to the way they were before" i.e. back to being so close that they rarely spent any time apart and then ended up getting married once things settled down shortly after the war.)

But, according to IR fans, IR was the pairing that had the most romantic development all along. I disagree, but I'll entertain that notion for the sake of argument: If IR was given the most romantic development and therefore was the easiest to make canon......Why the hell didn't Kubo make it canon then? There was nothing stopping him from writing some sudden climax of Ichigo and Rukia confessing their feelings in the final arc if they truly did have feelings for each other. But instead, he kept churning out more and more RR and IH content, even when he was crunched for time due to his illness and only had about 15 chapters left to work with.

And then of course, the final chapter pays homage to the IR bond coming full circle with "Death and Strawberry," as their children meet. And Ichigo and Rukia are on the final volume cover, paying homage to and celebrating the very bond that kickstarted Bleach. Which caused fans to accuse Kubo of being a troll and shipteasing them like, "why are IR on the cover if it's not romantic!!?!! Why not put Ichigo and Orihime then if they're the ones who are supposedly so in love?!?!"

As if the forefront and covers of shounens is where you'll find romantic couples more often than the strictly platonic nakama bonds lmao. I talked more about this in this post.

Then you have the quote Kubo gave in the WDKALY postscripts: “…I wondered how she could ever write a novel about the wedding ceremony that way, but she executed it beautifully. It brought tears to my eyes. I’m sure that people who love Ichigo and Rukia like me, will also cry.”

Meaning he was so happy with the ending he gave to Ichigo and Rukia, it brought tears of joy to his eyes, and anyone who is a fan of Ichigo and Rukia should surely be happy for them, too.

Why would he be so happy for them, if he gave them some terrible ending where they couldn't be with their one true love and had to settle for some other characters instead? Not to mention, what author would actually want that kind of ending for their heroes and protagonists, characters they loved and had been writing for for over a decade? For the four of them to be in some sad, loveless marriages? Where Ichigo and Rukia are emotionally dishonest assholes, and poor Orihime and Renji are relegated to being nothing more than a consolation prize?

Like....why lmao. That makes no sense, unless you intentionally wanted all of your protags to suffer, but Kubo's never given a single indication that that's what he was going for. Again, the ending brought tears of joy to his eyes. He's happy for his characters, and how they ended up. I can't imagine that he would continue on writing about their lives and the next gen kids in this new Hell Verse arc if he genuinely wasn't interested in how everything turned out and hated his own ending that he was in no way forced to write.

I mean, the tldr of this is that the only thing that stopped Kubo from making IR romantic is that he did not want it to be romantic. He never intended for it to be romantic. He said it himself, he wrote the entire series, following chapter one, with their marriages and children to other people already planned. It was his plan all along for Ichigo's son to meet Rukia's daughter, paralleling the "Death and Strawberry" thing. He even used the same title for both the first and last chapter! Bringing it full circle. That was always his plan--not for Ichigo and Rukia to get together and have kids, but for each of their respective kids to meet one day.

So, romantic!IR was never on the table. People have such a hard time accepting that, maybe because they don't want to admit they were wrong about something they clung so hard to for years, but that's just the way it is.

Kubo has made it perfectly clear, so many times, with both the manga itself, and with all the quotes and interviews he's given over the years, that Ichigo and Rukia were precious nakama, and it is not romance (and that particular quote dates all the way back to 2008!).

It's a shame Sayuri doesn't do dramatic reveals because I think her revealing the full extent of her powers when previously she did absolutely nothing would be fun. Does anyone--whether it be the Gotei 13 or the Vizards or Ichigo's gang--ever find out? Does anyone try to talk to her? Also, how do people know Sousuke respects Sayuri if Sayuri acts like his shadow? Do they banter in public or something? (their banter is one of my favourite things actually it's fun to see them interact)

“Care to share a drink?” A familiar voice asks cheerfully.

“I’m not really one for alcohol,” Sayuri replies without looking up.

“Tea, then.” An expectant pause. “Interesting time you’ve chosen to sit down and read a book,” the voice continues, amused, when Sayuri doesn’t answer. “Don’t think I’ve seen anyone do that in the middle of a battlefield before.”

Sayuri glances up, just briefly, before returning to her book.

“Sousuke has his entertainment,” she says curtly, jerking her chin towards where Sousuke is currently battling several of the Espada. “I have mine.”

She receives a huff of laughter in reply.

“Fair enough,” Kyouraku Shunsui says, smiling down at her. “Where are my manners? Allow me to introduce myself, my name is--”

“I know who you are, Kyouraku-taicho,” Sayuri interrupts, turning a page in her book.

“You have me at a disadvantage then,” Kyouraku says after a long pause, when it becomes clear she has no intention of continuing. “I’m afraid I can’t say the same of you. Odd, given that I’m well acquainted with your partner...or well, a version of him, I should say.”

“Who I am is unimportant. Sousuke is my....partner, as you put it. That’s all anyone needs to know,” Sayuri says blandly.

“You love him,” Kyouraku states. It isn’t a question.

Sayuri’s lips quirk up almost imperceptibly.

“More than you could imagine,” she confirms. Kyouraku studies her for another moment, then shakes his head, chuckling softly.

“You’re quite the mystery, you know that?” He asks.

“Hardly,” Sayuri replies. “I’ve already told you everything important about me. Everything else is just...details.”

“Oh? Care to share some of those details then?” Kyouraku asks genially, his casual smile almost-- but not quite-- hiding the sharp glint in his eyes. “I’d very much like to get to know the woman who chooses books over battle. I think we could be friends-- if you’ll let me, that is.” He smiles, eyes crinkling at the edges. “Maybe I’ll even change your mind about sake! I have some lovely bottles I’ve been saving, waiting for just the right opportunity.”

Sayuri hums noncommittally.

“If you expect me to open up to you, Kyouraku-taicho, you’ll have to do better than that,” she says.

“What do you mean?” Kyouraku asks.

Sayuri closes her book.

“I mean, you don’t really care about the girl who chooses to read in the middle of a battlefield, you want to know about the woman Aizen Sousuke deemed worthy to stand by his side. But for that to happen, you’ll have to be more than a drunkard in a pink kimono, Kyouraku-taicho.” She stands up. “Don’t expect me to share my secrets if you’re not willing to share yours.”

“And will you?” Kyouraku asks, standing up as well. “Share yours, I mean.”

Sayuri tilts her head to the side.

“I guess you’ll just have to wait and see, won’t you?”

She pauses.

“Oh, I almost forgot,” Sayuri adds, tone shifting. She reaches into her pocket, pulling out a small bag, then tosses it to Kyouraku.

“What’s this?” He asks, catching it reflexively.

“Candy.” At Kyouraku’s inquiring look, she elaborates, “We had a run in with Zaraki-taicho a few days ago. Kusajishi-fukutaicho was kind enough to keep me company while Sousuke...talked things over with Zaraki-taicho. I’d appreciate it if you could pass this on to her.”

He looks down at the bag of candy in his hand.

“If this is a ploy to gain my sympathy, it’s a very obvious one,” Kyouraku states, raising his eyebrows.

“Yes, it would be,” Sayuri agrees, and for the first time, a hint of a genuine smile crosses her face. “Good night, Kyouraku-taicho.”

He watches her walk off to join a different, happier version of Aizen Sousuke and smiles a little to himself.

Honesty, huh? He can work with that.

(idk I’ve just always liked writing Sayuri and Kyouraku’s relationship. As for how everyone knows Sousuke holds Sayuri in high regard-- well, Sayuri may choose to stay quiet most of the time but she’s not completely silent. And on the occasions she does choose to speak up, Sousuke’s default response is something along the lines of ‘shut up everyone, Sayuri is talking’.

As for revealing her powers-- well, unlike Sousuke, she doesn’t plan for dramatic reveals. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen anyway lol)

How the Cookie crumbles

Who am I?

I am Cookie, a ciswoman, born in 1997, living in Belgium, INFJ.

When did I start writing fanfiction?

Probably in 2002. I’ve always liked reading books and writing little stories was already a hobby of mine as a kid. I’ve had a pc on my room ever since I was about 5 years old and I used to be able to spend hours just playing patience or -you guessed it- write stories in word (remember Clippy?). Back then it was mostly Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King.

I stopped for a few years and picked it up again around 2010, this time while knowingly watching anime. It all started out with Naruto and Vampire Knight. I used to publish some of my works (reader inserts and oc content) from about 2012 to 2014, but let’s not talk about the quality of my work back then, lol.

When did I start this blog?

My first work was posted on Tumblr on 21/07/2020.

What’s the story behind my url?

I’m horribly unoriginal with usernames and I always pick the same things. Usually this is easier because they can always find me pretty quick. For Tumblr though, I didn’t want people to find me (except if I told them), so I needed something new. But like I said, I’m horribly unoriginal. So I looked around in my room, and my eyes were drawn to my Hannibal book. Now Hannibal didn’t sound good, but I’ve always loved the sound of ‘silence of the lambs’. And I just happened to be craving cookies at the time. And thus, silenceofthecookies was born. Before I turned this into a proper writing blog, my bio used to be ‘Why are the cookies silent? Because I ate them’.

Did I make my own theme?

Nope! I have very little knowledge of html. My lovely friend @blueflamebimbo made it for me. She came up with the whole idea as well, since I’m horribly unoriginal and had no idea what I wanted for a theme.

What are my favourite characters?

What is my favourite genre to write?

Angst is definitely my favourite, good end or bad. From 2016 until summer 2020 (the period where I didn’t publish any of my writings) I wrote nothing but angst. It’s just something so easy for me to write and I feel a sense of joy when I’m able to move people with my writing.

That being said, I do love writing most things. It’s nice to have a bit of variety.

Can you thirst with me?

Sure! Feel free to talk to me about your favourite characters and what you love about them. I may get a little shy saying explicit things myself though, but I can definitely bark for certain characters with you!

What about oc’s?

I love talking about my babies. Any oc I’m comfortable sharing information about will be posted on my oc masterlist, this will include both my own creations and creations other people have made for me. Please ask before publishing anything about my oc’s, and give proper credit if you do.

Takes care of on sick days: Shunsui obvi since Ukitake is usually the one who's sick

Gets jealous the most: Ukitake! Sometimes he feels like hes not good enough of a partner bc of his health issues. I feel like he wouldn't be malicious about it I think he would just be sad and maybe understanding if Shunsui DID get a lover

Drags the other person out into the water on beach day: Ukitake I think Shunsui would be all chill and read a book or relax with a drink and ukitake would be like "NOPE LOL GET UP" not that Shunsui would have any objections obviously

Tries to start role-playing in bed: Shunsui...because DUH

Brings the other lunch at work: They're both probably bad at cooking so they usually eat out with each other

Okay I had to let this sit here and ruminate for a minute because it is so awful. There would be just enough in Shiro’s inner world to keep Ichigo sane enough to hate it. He would alternate between being paranoid and jumpy to pissed off and desperate to finally being so depressed he just sat down and didn’t move, because if there is something in the darkness aT LEAST ITS SOMETHING. So I think Ichigo’s reaction to Shiro would depend on what phase of desperation Ichigo had reached lol

And I don’t even think all the real psychological damage would show until he was out again and everything was so bright and real that he couldn’t stand it. Not to mention, how long would it take Shiro to find an inner world he doesn’t even think he has??? Would he think he’d just assimilated Ichigo the way he does every other hollow?

And if it WAS reversed and Shiro finally got out, would he even want to be near Ichigo for fear of getting stuck back in him again???

But listen, if Shiro was inside him, Ichigo would be on his best behavior. He would work so hard to fix it and just generally try his hardest to be a better host than he was the last time. There’s a chance he wouldn’t have time to feel depressed UNLESS he sensed Shiro getting more and more frustrated, and then I can see him worrying more. But I mean, after he’d checked on Shiro and Shiro set him straight, he’d be pretty determined agsksvsj

And I can just see some noble? in Seireitei deciding Shunsui wasn’t handing Ichigo and his insubordination right and deciding to correct it all themself?? Especially if they had resources in the human world like the Kuchiki’s?

OK BUT Shiro wading out of the darkness fully masked because, idk, hollow in a hollow’s inner world I guess and because I love that mask but it’s honestly horrifying lmao

KJSdflkjSDLFKJ Shiro being an insensitive asshole “IT’S THE SUN WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU BE HAPPY.” Ok but honestly that’s... awful and so tragic and jfc Ichigo doesn’t deserve this sort of abuse, but it sure is entertaining yikes. And I think Shiro would probably assume assimilation is exactly what happened at first. Probably for a while, too. He’d panic, probably seek serious revenge, then grieve because no matter how many times he loses (or thinks he’s lost) Ichigo, it hurts every time. But he'd realize something was off sooner or later and as soon as the idea that maybe there is a possibility that Ichigo was in there somewhere, nothing would stop him from figuring out how to get there. (And then maybe he'd be forced to admit that MAYBE he's a little more shinigami than he wants to be oops)

Oh boy. If it was reversed, Shiro would... Yes, he'd want to be near Ichigo but I think actually being close would make him so uncomfortable and on edge for a while. At first it would probably take him some time to calm the hell down and settle and come to terms with the fact that he is actually really free again. After that, he'd logically know it wasn't Ichigo's fault or intention to trap him there, but instinct would make him shy away from close contact for a while, despite that he'd want that closeness. He'd be torn and uncomfortable with it for some time.

Omg Ichigo in the middle of doing whatever he'd doing and just getting this really intense feeling of frustrated, pent up anger and having to sort through it to realize that's coming from his hollow, not himself. Or god forbid it was panic over the fear of never getting out or something. Aww but good boy Ichigo he's such a good and caring boyfriend T^T Shiro would try so hard to trust that Ichigo would figure something out

Kdgsjdkskfjs fuck I could see that happening too, especially after word got out that however they shut the worlds still wasnt enough to stop Ichigo and his hollow. I'm sure that would rub some high ranking shinigami the wrong way. Not only are the two completely uncontrollable but ridiculously stubborn and strong enough to follow through? Unforgivable really

Originally I was rping Shunsui on discord, though Kisuke was one of my fav characters growing up, at the time I was super invested in Shunsui--- then I decided to actually read bleach.

I have a secret I’ve actually only read the last 2 arcs (the fullbring stuff and tybw) and the rest is the knowledge I remember from growing up with bleach lol. though I do go back and read and watch certain parts to keep myself updated. I’m not really sure, I guess I slowly became obsessed with Kisuke and then I started rping him on discord too but I didn’t really have many people to rp with consistently so I decided to try indie again after YEARS of not doing so.

tl;dr i became obsessed with kisuke within like 2 days and started rping him because of it

i can’t think of what is/isn’t a popular opinion about him.... i guess there’s the general idea that he’s disrespectful to everyone, but i’d say that’s untrue. to kenpachi, big power equals big respect. so even if he doesn’t agree with the methods or lifestyles of people like jushiro or shunsui, he probably has quite a bit of respect for them deep down and wouldn’t do anything too bad to piss them off. ...jushiro especially. he likely fears jushiro almost as much as unohana.

625: "Tension! Aokiji vs Doflamingo!"

One a scale of one to Kuzan, how bad is Doflamingo’s day going?

Only have time for one episode today but luckily it was a good one. 625 was crammed with intrigue and plot acceleration - not to mention adorable slice of life moments.

I know the next three episodes are filler (the thumbnail at the top corner of each video gave it away). Are they worth watching? I think I spied the Kung Fu Dugongs in the preview to 626. Those little guys were brilliant. xD

Mmmm... Dat Delicious Peril

Must confess I was hyped for this episode. The action continued were 624 left off: Doflamingo astride Smoker with Kuzan at his back.

“I need you to get off my friend.”

The way Doflamingo reacted to the imminent danger was interesting. The slow creep of ice towards him was a warning. He didn’t move. Slasher smile fixed to his face, he glanced about, considered: am I calm enough to retreat and let this slide?

Doflamingo served a large helping of Hell No.

He decided, “Screw it,” and went for the kill. Smoker almost went to the Big Cigar Shop in the sky. Luckily, his awesome friend had his back and froze Doflamingo’s feathery ass.

I knew Doflamingo wasn’t beaten because the cheeky little glint of his frozen shades told me so. He broke out of Kuzan’s ice casing and just stood there, staring at Kuzan, chuckling like a madman. (Also I love how Kuzan’s Devil Fruit lets opponents escape with all their clothing and accessories intact. He’s a good guy, really.)

For a second, I thought there might be a fight. Dramatic music kicked in. Kuzan and Doflamingo stared each other down. Then Doflamingo sauntered straight past Kuzan like it was nothing.

“I don’t want to fight you,” he said. “But if I can’t keep Smoker’s mouth shut, I will have to change my approach.”

Straight up threat there. Smoker now knows he can’t go blabbing about what Vergo has done. It’s probably in Smoker’s best interest, to be honest. If Vergo infiltrated the Marines, there might be more of Doflamingo’s agents crawling about the woodwork. Then again, Akainu is now in charge, and I’ll bet he’d love nothing more than to detect and crush any hidden pirates in the Marine ranks.

Doflamingo’s next dig was more interesting.

“But could you tell me one thing? Just what are you now, Kuzan? The things I’ve heard about you aren’t cool. The face of a vagabond is different from one who has a purpose.”

Now I’ve watched Film Z, Doflamingo’s comment “What are you now?” echoes what Kuzan said about himself. At that point, Kuzan wasn’t sure and even asked himself, “Just what am I now?” He sort of answered his own question, referring to himself as “an ally of justice.” Maybe.

I still don’t know the full significance of Doflamingo’s pointed dig at Kuzan, but from the way Kuzan reacted once Doflamingo, Baby 5 and Buffalo flew off and Smoker said, “You’re not connected with the underworld, are you?”.... well, it got me wondering.

Kuzan sent the nosey G5 guys away while he had a quiet word with Smoker.

“I’m still the same person, Smoker.”

“That’s good then.”

I wonder if this means Kuzan *is* operating in the underworld, but that he told Smoker he was “the same person” means Smoker is no longer above dodgy dealings as long as Kuzan is still on the right side.

“At any rate, don’t take your eyes off Doflamingo. He is both a Shichibukai and a king of Dressrosa. He is an extremely dangerous pirate.”

Well, the king status explains why he has a massive house and a ton of servants. But this further complicates matters. Is Doflamingo an actual king, like one of the World Nobles? Or is this something lost in translation, like a kingpin, drug lord type of a banana republic?

“Tell Sakazuki to get the admirals moving. In the worst case scenario, the cogs will be destroyed and this will become the biggest threat that Sakazuki’s new Marines will have to face. I’ve warned you.”

Laying aside the whole aura of menace and the existence of important (metaphorical?) cogs, the fact that Kuzan is still willing to work with Akainu (Sakazuki is his real name, right?) speaks volumes about his character. I’m still not certain if Akainu knows Kuzan is still supporting them or whether this is a voluntary thing on Kuzan’s part and he continues to help from the shadows because he feels he must.

Either way, I like it.

Also laughed a lot when he forgot he was going to ask G5 to keep what had happened a secret. Lol, he’s still absent-minded.

Still, the escalating sense of imminent conflict is great. Glad the plot is building towards something again. I wonder if the Marines know about Doflamingo, Kaidou and SMILE? Maybe Kuzan knows and that’s why he’s secretly warning Akainu to mobilise?

Maybe it’s something completely different.

Either way, I place some of the blame on this guy.

Hi, Caesar!

Aww, look. He’s thrilled to be the cause of it all. xD

On board Sunny, Law explained the trade relationship between Doflamingo and Kaidou. For some reason, he was cool explaining the plan to Foxfire and Momonosuke, who were hanging around listening in for no real reason. Still not sure why Law was cool with the alliance’s secret plan being heard by a pair of randoms from Wano, but I’m sure there is a reason.

I loved that even Foxfire and Momonosuke were shocked at the Alliance going after Kaidou.

Law also explained the plan in greater detail, which is great for us fans.

“To defeat Kaidou,” he said, “we must whittle down his fighting force. Kaidou has been buying many Zoan SMILEs from Doflamingo. There are many risk to SMILEs, but despite that, Kaidou now has over five hundred Devil Fruit users in his crew.”

First off, holy crap. Five hundred Devil Fruit users in his crew? That is a number, it really is.

Secondly, I was wrong about Kaidou wanting to use the SMILEs to boost his own beastly strength. He’s creating stronger crew. That’s definitely better. Much more of a threat if you have strong crew as well as being an absolute unit yourself.

Thirdly, there are risks to SMILEs. I wonder if these risks will give the StrawHearts (my new name for the Alliance) an in with Kaidou’s crew? As in, the ones SMILE didn’t work on will be injured or bitter and willing to betray Kaidou? Hmm...

“But Kaidou won’t be making any more,” Law added, and looked straight at Caesar.

Caesar was like, “Who me? Ehehehehe.” I loved that moment when Chopper was like, “Omg, you create the ingredients for SMILE? That’s really impressive!” and when Law said, “Nah, he just improved Vegapunk’s work,” Chopper was like, “Oh.”

Totally don’t get why no one is impressed by that, to be honest. Science is all about improving and refining others’ work, even things that seem to be completely new. If Caesar adapted and improved SMILE, that’s still a legit achievement, I think. (I can’t believe I’m sticking up for Caesar. xD)

At any rate, Law also revealed there is another SMILE factory on Dressrosa. Their mission: find and destroy. Once that’s done, Kaidou won’t he able to increase his forces. The only caution (and a significant one at that) is that Doflamingo is a total pro and will not sit idly by while the StrawHearts mess up his business.

Luckily, Dressrosa is also where Foxfire and Momonosuke need to go. Apparently, they’re off to rescue a comrade who is imprisoned there. (Maybe that’s why Law was okay for Foxfire and Momo sticking around. It seems like Oda is going to include them in next arc’s plotline too. I think this is the first time this has happened in One Piece. And not only to them, but a villain too!)

This Was Just Great

Once Law was done explaining the plan, clouds gathered overhead. It was slice of life time. I know I love plot and intrigue but I also cherish those little peaceful moments between arcs, when the Strawhats are just hanging out on Sunny, enjoying the freedom of the sea.

There was a hair-raising moment when Sunny was almost crushed by a single giant hailstone (thanks Nami, Usopp, Chopper and Franky for timely avoidance tactics.) Momonosuke was super impressed by the Coup de Burst and Nami offered him a tour of Sunny.

I was like, “Yes! Give him a tour so I can see it too!” xD

Nami spent hours taking little Momonosuke round Sunny. He saw the fish tank, the library, got some lunch from Sanji, was examined by Dr Chopper - complete with hilarous tache - and sort of spoiled it with that moment in the bath with Robin but... meh, it’s Oda’s humour so whatever. :)

The nighttime scene was nice too. Usopp and Chopper dressing up in samurai armour and messing about on deck. Luffy fishing in armour (lol). Foxfire and Zoro sparring because Foxfire thought Zoro was the zombie swordsman from Thriller Bark because he had Shunsui (lol). Foxfire’s fiery sword slashes waking up and almost frying Caesar (double lol).

Brook said some pretty smart things about Doflamingo right at the end, which I am eighty-five percent certain no one will have heard because he was half talking to himself.

“Between losing his place as a Shichibukai and fighting a Yonko. I rather expect him to do neither and come after us.”

Me too, Brook. Me too.

And there was a rabbit turtle thing plus a guy with flowing cape, top hat and scary, shiny monocle. I’m guessing he is the filler bad guy?
