Hello, lovelies! Tell Me Something Tuesday is a meme created by Rainy Day Ramblings and currently hosted by Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life, That's What I'm Talking About, For What It's Worth, Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Offbeat YA. It provides weekly discussion prompts on various book and blogging topics with optional participation. You can sign up for prompts here.
This week’s prompt is: What are some of your favourite indie/small pub authors/books?
I adore this prompt because I have SO many small/indie press books that I love that don't get enough attention. It's the saddest thing to love an incredible gem of a book and know it’s not getting the proper hype. I was going to try to narrow this list down to five (and then ten), but these all deserve my love and recognition, so here are ten indie/small press books you might not have heard of, and two you probably have (although if you've spent any amount of time on my blog, you’ve probably heard me screeching about all of them before).
The Art of Escaping by Erin Callahan (Amberjack Publishing) I could scream forever about Callahan's writing. She's easily one of my favorite small press authors, and I would read anything she ever published without question. A very well-done YA contemporary coming-of-age story about authenticity and friendship, with barely a hint of romance.
Dream Keeper by Amber R. Duell (The Parliament House) Why why why haven't more people read this book? It's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) meets Rise of the Guardians (2012), complete with Sandman and Weaver, a sweet romance, and some truly spectacular world-building. I haven't stopped raving since I read it.
The Goblins of Bellwater by Molly Ringle (Central Avenue Publishing) There isn't enough goblin fiction out there, in my opinion (and I've looked), but this is easily my favorite of what I've read. It's a paranormal romance with complicated characters and a gorgeous setting, where goblins are pure and simply the villains-- no sexy goblin king here.
The Shadow Glass by Josh Winning (Titan Books) Speaking of sexy goblin kings. Hi, hello, have you heard me screaming about this book too? Fans of 80s nostalgia fantasy like The NeverEnding Story (1984) and Labyrinth (1986) will find so much to love about this. It’s basically a spiritual sequel to those films about what happens when we grow up and don't believe in magical worlds anymore--and how much we still need them, even as adults. Complete with talking puppets!
Daphne by B.C. Johnson (self-published) Technically, this is a horror novella set in the Deadgirl universe, but it's my favorite in the series, and I don't think readers unfamiliar with the other books will have trouble following it. If you need a violent, lesbian harpy in your life, with a blend of Greek/Norse mythology and a body count, this is for you. You had me at eat them alive.
Smoke and Key by Kelsey Sutton (Entangled Teen) Yet another book I can't believe more people haven't read. It's such a strange, gruesome little afterlife story with a dash of romance, like The Corpse Bride (2005) without the slapstick humor or the singing. Exactly my kind of weird.
The Chronology of Water by Lidia Yuknavitch (Hawthorne Books) A gut-wrenching and beautifully crafted memoir about what happens to women in particular when we don’t fit the labels our culture has made for us. Fans of Cheryl Strayed will adore it.
After Always by Barbara J. Hancock (Entangled Teen) Sometimes the blend of paranormal and romance hits exactly the right note, and this book nails it. I adore the haunted house setting and the lovely, atmospheric writing, but I stayed for the excellent character arc of Lydia both grieving her lost boyfriend and realizing he wasn't good for her.
Theories of Forgetting by Lance Olsen (Fiction Collective 2) If you like experimental fiction at all, you absolutely need to read some Olsen. While I feel it's not quite as thematically whole as Calendar of Regrets, it might be a bit more accessible. It's smart and easy to read if not to understand, since while there are a lot of big concepts in here, the writing itself isn't overly complicated (also assuming you can decide where to start, since both sides look like the back cover of the book-- good luck!).
We Told Six Lies by Victoria Scott (Entangled Teen) This is a weird, fucked up little thriller about a toxic relationship, so of course that's exactly why I love it. The characters are complex, codependent, and completely unaware of how badly they behave, and the plot is tense and mysterious. One of my favorite underrated YA thrillers.
Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee (Duet Books) We've reached the part of my list where you've probably heard of these books, but they're well-worth mentioning, especially for superhero fans. Great characters, fun world-building, and excellent queer representation across the board.
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic (self-published) You knew this was going to make the list, right? This book is so immensely popular on Tumblr that sometimes I forget it was a self-pub. I've read and reread it so many times, and the characters are so compelling, the story so immersive, that once I've started the first, I can't stop until I've finished the trilogy. Well-deserving of its hype.

Tumblr media
Blurb:
Welcome to the dark world of Grimm, where the villains are as wicked as their desires.
Aura was always destined to become the Starnight Prince’s bride following her twenty-first birthday. Now that the day has arrived, she looks forward to wedded bliss—and their first night together as husband and wife.
That is, until the savage dragon king from another court steals Aura away before the ceremony.
Hellbent on revenge, the King of Sin has been making careful plans to ruin the Starnight Prince. For years, he used lustful dalliances to battle his rage and bide his time. With Aura in his possession—the key to his vengeance—he’ll use her however he sees fit.
But whenever Aura is near, the King of Sin wants nothing more than to unlock her inner desires, make her crave his touch and long for the pleasure only he can give.
No matter the sin. No matter what is to become of her.

NIGHT WARDEN
by Amber R Duell
The Dark Dreamer Trilogy #3
(The Parliament House, 3/24/20)
9798628778784
Add to Goodreads
Purchase from Indiebound
The Nightmare Lord has fallen. The usurper, beaten. Now darker forces rise. Nora accepted her role as the Lady of Nightmares. With the Nightmare Kail at her side, she's even managed to excel, but past mistakes refuse to stay quiet. Not only is the Weaver narrating Nora's every move, but Mara—the Ancient that hitched a ride back to the Nightmare Realm—is intent on opening the Ever Safe. The Sandman is doing his best to plan Mara's defeat, but secrets threaten to tear everything apart. In the thrilling conclusion to the Dark Dreamer trilogy, Nora and the Sandman must face old friends, dead enemies, and new betrayal if they're going to keep the Ever Safe shut. If they fail, both the Day and Night Worlds will descend into darkness.

Dark Consort by Amber R. Duell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
** I was provided a free copy by the publishing press in exchange for my honest and independent opinion **
When I was pretty close to the end, I was determined to rate Dark Consort with 5 stars because it was so indescribably good and I barely could put it down (but I had to :( ) and I was always very hungry to continue reading as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there was the... I’ll call it “end battle” which disappointed me. Therefore, I eventually decided to give it 4 stars which is a decent rating, I think.
To put this review in one sentence: If you didn’t read the prequel, go and read it immediately because you NEED to read this book!
I was 100% in love with this sequel. While the prequel seemed pretty average to me (I gave it 3 stars), this was on a whole different level. After finishing the prequel I haven’t been certain if I would pick up the sequel. But when I learnt my favorite characters of the prequel (who didn’t have much screen time back then, unfortunately) have major roles in the sequel, I was lured. Can’t help it. If you’ve read Dream Keeper, you might be privy to what gems Rowan and Kail are. In this book I got a damn lot of them, both. But especially of Kail who’s my favorite character in this series. I was so in love with every scene he appeared in. To my mind he’s a brilliant protagonist and I can sense the author likes him a lot too because there’s so much detail in his character design. I hungered to learn more about him and I’m truly satisfied by the fact that there indeed was more to learn about him. Plus, many of his conversations with the actual main protagonist of this series Nora were pure gold. Funny and witty. Seriously, it was so much fun to read it but I also loved and suffered when I had to wait for the information I didn’t get. And I’m honest here, there’s a bit more I would have wished to learn about the .... “relation” between Kail and Rowan. Maybe I’ll get those details in the sequel to Dark Consort.
Plus, there is one thing that NEEDS to be explained and clarified in the next (and last book of this series): Who split the nightmares? Why? How? What happened? Pls, I need to know!!
Back to the relationships. In the prequel I complained about how there was too less info about the friendship between the Sandman and the Weaver. Maybe if I had gotten that, I would have been more touched by the Weaver’s death. But here comes this book and gives me some kind of flashbacks and they really hurt and made me ache and some part of me actually wished to get the Weaver back, certainly also because there are some urgent tasks. The relationship between the Sandman and Nora was so difficult. I didn’t always relate to their decisions and actions and sometimes I found their feelings a bit off and/or strange, maybe even forced. I hated to see them drifting apart and I was so worried how this’ll develop over the years, decades, centuries and eons. I mean, honestly, they have SOOOOO much time ahead. It’s hard to grasp it. Anyway, I cheered for Nora when she decided to remember who she is.
Let’s also talk about new characters: Firstly, I liked the nightmares in this book more than the nightmares in the prequel. To my mind, their design was more unique and special. Some images that were brought up even made me giggle. Though I shouldn’t laugh, it’s the Nightmare Realm after all. // giggles I liked Halven a lot (though I think his name is a bit spoiler-ish if you know the truth — maybe it’s just coincidence, though. Who knows... Ah, the author does!) Then, there was Mare/Mara and honestly, she gives me goosebumps. Everywhere. I feel like she might become the End Game of this series. Plus, I like how the entire plot gets more substantial because of her. Especially the whole story of the Ever Cage. It’s a very interesting idea and I like how the Night World gets a story of itself, with development, changes, etc.
Finally, a short look at the plot. The overall plot wasn’t a big surprise but after finishing the prequel one could already surmise which course this book would go. Nonetheless, the details came unexpected. Especially when Kail came up. I also was positively surprised when Nora’s sister was involved in a way I didn’t think of. The only bit of the plot which I didn’t like too much was how Nora’s training was set. I mean I can see why it was executed like this and every happening was interesting to read in its entirety. I just would have wished for the transitions to be smoother. Nonetheless, Kail’s presence made it worth every second.
Honestly, this book was so much better than the prequel because of its characters and the dynamics and relationships between the characters. I mean, yes, the plot was very intriguing and entertaining to read but I can only truly enjoy a book if I feel with the protagonists. Fear, suffer, love, smile. This is only possible if the characters are designed with effort and care, so I can relate and bond with them. Then, the plot can truly get to me. This is why I enjoyed reading Dark Consort so very much.
For the sequel I hope to get more danger, angst, thrill... I want to get all the high stakes. It seems they’ll be up against Mare and because of certain flashbacks it’s to be expected it’ll be risky and dangerous. So pls, use the chance to make it a bloody and thrilling finale. I’m very excited to read the last book of this series!!

RELATIONSHIPS
Tumblr media
Brother: Rasalas Jacob Winter
Jacob is 5 years older than her
He was sorted to Gryffindor like father
His first name, Rasaras, means the northern star of the lion head (Constellation of Leo)
Jacob really love his sister, they are inseparable since she was born. When he first saw Danique, as a newborn, he swore to Merlin that he would protect her with all cost. When he went to Hogwarts, he sent a letter for Danique weekly. The letters are about his life in Hogwarts, he even tells her about the cursed vaults. Then there is R situation, he rarely sent her a letter. When she asked about the vault and why he didn't send a letter weekly, he said that he gave up and busy with his school works.
During Summer break, he would show Danique all the spells he studied and broom flying manoeuvres(Without mom and dad knowing). Even she doesn't have wand, she would try to mimic his move. One day when her magical ability is awake, she somehow could cast the spells without a wand. This is the reason why Danique knows and masters a lot of spells and has excellent flying skills.
One summer after Jacob was treated by R, he was a lot quiet and stayed in his room most of the time. Danique was feeling sad about this, but her dad told her that it is normal for teenagers to spend their time in the bedroom. So she tried to understand and playing with herself instead.
Knowing Jacob was expelled is quite a shock for her since Jacob was always serious about studying and had good grades. She was angry at him for ruining family's peace. He and father had never talk to each other again since that. Even she was angry, she sneaked into his room to talk to him sometimes. Surprisingly, Jacob talked to her. He also told her that he may disappear one day to seek for something and if he found it, it might make the situation better. Having thought about Jacob leaving, she cried and tried to beg him not to go. Jacob lied that he changed his mind and promised to stay. One morning when Danique went to his room to show her new achievement of wandless spell, he was not there.
Tumblr media
Father: Dilan Sigourney Winter
Pure blood
Former Auror
Sorted to Gryffindor
Charming, persistent, easy going, family man
Curently work for Department of international Magical Cooperation
He loves his children so much. He always spend his freetime with them by playing with them, show them some spectacular spells, and take them to picnic at countryside near London.
Since there was an incident at the end of the first wizarding war, his wife died, he became more strict and protective. He worried about his children, especially Danique since she was young and unlike Jacob that he has a protection from Hogwarts. He quited his job and moved to countryside, far away from London. He even took Danique to work at the department.
When Jacob was expelled, he was really angry on Jacob behaviors and blamed himself for not taking a good care for him.
Tumblr media
Mother: Helen Winter
Muggle-born
Sorted to Hufflepuff
Kind, generous, cheerful, dedicated
She was a famous singer in wizarding world, but she has some connections so she could hide her personal life from the society. No one know that she married and have kids, she just disappeared from the spotlight.
On October 20, there are a group of death eaters invaded in her house while her husband were out for work. Lucky for Jacob, he went to Diagon alley to search for a clue for cursed vault. She tried to protected her daughter, Danique, and was killed by one of the invaders. Before they could lay their hands on the poor girl, her father arrived from work and killed them all.
After 1 year of the incident, Dilan can't forgive himself and he missed her a lot. He decided to hire a painter to make a magical portrait of Helen.
So Danique's mom is a magical portrait!

Dream Keeper by Amber R. Duell
"When we were both new to this existence--him, born in the Day World's shadow, the embodiment of mortal fears. And I, the manifestation of their optimism, their wishes and goodness. Different yet unified, we had laughed together, grown together, and combined our power for the common good more than once."
Year Read: 2019
Rating: 4/5
Context: I received a free e-copy through NetGalley from the publishers at The Parliament House. Trigger warnings: death, parent death, suicide, torture, body horror, eye horror, self-harm, severe illness, heart attack, violence, blood, threats, mental illness, hospitals.
About: Every night, seventeen-year-old Nora visits the Sandman in her dreams. He's her closest friend and best-guarded secret, since talk of the Sandman's world when she was younger led to a series of doctors and psychiatric exams. But the Sandman has a secret too, and when Nora's friends begin dying horrible, violent deaths in their sleep, she turns to him for answers. When Nora was younger, the Sandman hid something inside her mind, a dream that has the power to save the dreamworld or unleash its greatest enemy, the Weaver, who is intent on bringing his nightmares into the human world.
Thoughts: If a grown-up Rise of the Guardians met A Nightmare on Elm Street with a dose of teenage romance, you would have Dream Keeper. It's been a while since I was so captivated by a fantasy world. While Duell's real world is just like ours, her dream world is a well-constructed mix of whimsical dreams and gruesome nightmares. I wanted to spend more time in it, and I hope the next two novels will do more to explore its dark corners and expand on the rules of its magic. It probably goes without saying at this point that I'm on board for the rest of the series.
I was surprised by how violent the story is right from the beginning. The Weaver isn't often on-page, but the effects of his nightmares are sudden and almost cinematic in their gore, and the body count rises quickly along with the stakes. I like Nora and the Sandman, but I don't quite feel like their development comes as far as it could. Nora is a lot like most teenage heroines, and the Sandman like a lot of heroes; she's brave but doubts herself, his primary character trait is wanting to protect her, and lack of communication is one of their biggest problems as a couple. However, I like that he never pushes decisions on her and lets her make her own choices, even if they pose a risk to her safety.
While the nightmare world itself is fascinating, the Weaver is slightly underdeveloped. (I definitely heard Pitch's voice when he spoke, but that might be more because I love RotG than because he actually sounds like that.) We don't really know his motivation for wanting to unleash nightmares on the human world (boredom, maybe?), and the balance between him and the Sandman is hinted at but never fully explained. The end is exciting and leaves off on a gripping plot twist, and I'm looking forward to seeing its consequences play out in the next books. It's a dark, imaginative, and unusual read, recommended for YA fantasy readers who enjoy those things.
