Okay. So I was willing to give Erin Patterson a chance to explain herself when this story first broke earlier this year. However, it would appear that investigators have found enough evidence to press murder charges.

If you haven't been following this story, Patterson picked death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) and cooked them in a beef Wellington which she then served to family members and herself, but not her children. (The kids apparently had leftovers later but scraped the mushrooms off.) Everyone who ate the mushrooms, including Patterson, ended up in the hospital. She survived, but three people died, including her ex in-laws.

She initially claimed it was an accident, but it sounds like her story has enough inconsistencies to raise serious suspicion. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out in the courtroom.

Originally I saw this as yet another cautionary tale of making sure you don't pick the wrong mushrooms. However, maybe the moral of the story will end up being "don't try to murder people with toxic fungi, for all sorts of reasons." We saw the value of choosing a game with a more straightforward closed game loop of solving rooms' puzzles to escape and rinse and repeat for the next level. Determine to escape, the player must interact with characters and objects to solve room-based puzzles for one step closer to freedom from the maze-like prison, Hilberts House. After communicating the game idea with many friends and family outside of Champlain's Game Studio, they all seemed fascinated by how such a mundane character set in a magic's only struggle is traversing the environment. They enjoy how original Hilbert's House was as the lore explains gameplay as to why rooms seem to repeat themselves. Since the concept's game loop appeals to the escape room theme games, it opens the player demographic to a wide-range audience, making the game concept, not niche. The only qualms they had were what other methodologies the lore is conveyed outside of character narration and the room repeating itself with minor changes! However, the environmental artist expressed how they were going to incorporate strange lotus-themed plants to convey how Hilbert's House takes place far from earth. The team wants Hilbert's house mechanics, systems, lore, narrative, environment, and characters to feel and make sense of how we want the concept to become.

Learning Experience

Even though Hilbert's House game loop is more straightforward, and has low ceiling scope, it provided us a safe space to ensure that we can achieve a minimum viable product while slowly challenging ourselves with new features in our respective disciplines. I have been slowly incorporating shaders and other forms of visual effects into Hilbert's House to help immerse the player into the environment, with my bubbles and smoke shader. We furthermore frequently divert work responsibilities each sprint to stay on track with our road map. During the earlier stages of the project, any jokingly made side conversations became features in the game, like the thought of making the potatoes physical being like mashed potatoes to get under the door to exit the room. That idea became the first core mechanic the player acquires to "escape" the kitchen during its first iteration, the squish mechanic. That cycle became full team meetings discussing the room puzzle's minimal requirements and what each discipline can do to execute it to a functional state. If the puzzle requirements seem too over scope, not fun, or distracting to the overarching storyline, then we inform the designer to rework the puzzle. In conclusion, my production team is challenging ourselves while keeping the core gameplay simplistic, which so far has kept our enjoyment in what this game concept can become!

plotwise, it’s under the read more below! and it’s more of a rambling i had 2 years ago + what i remember 2 years later now lmao. logistically, what went wrong i think i’ve answered before. basically if netflix didn’t give the show a tight timeline for filming the finale, i think things would have turned out smoother. if it took an extra year or two to release the finale, i think it would have turned out with much higher quality and more consideration with regards to like everything really

act 1: the plan

planning and subsequent rescuing of wolfgang in the first 30-40 minutes instead of the whole thing taking an entire goddamn hour. cut out wolfgang trying to kill himself. a waste of 5 minutes that should have directly introduced the chairman.

cut out lito’s meltdown and don’t have rajan show up at all. it was a lazy plot device to help jonas escape and a waste of 7 minutes

will and riley meet up with felix and bug instead of that French lady riley like can we get some more lito and kala instead

will fighting bodhi was absolutely pointless??? An excuse to have a fight for no reason like it wouldn’t have made bodhi trying to stab whispers in the club any different (it would’ve made it better imo coming out of nowhere)

the dani and amanita scene was good but a serious continuity error since the show is supposed to be from the perspective of one of the 8

river el-sadaawi was a completely useless character to introduce like it should’ve just been hoy and yrsa talking with riley

act 2: the exchange

rajan should not have been part of the exchange lol just swap him out for Felix and it’s all good

Considering Whispers does nothing in this finale other than being a hot potato passed around by people if he died in the club when Bodhi stabbed him it would’ve made an interesting turn of events

act 3: the lacuna

instead of staying at rajan’s random friend’s place just say it’s riley’s friend? literally makes more sense that way

no lacuna or bodhi shit. it was all deux ex machina like something could’ve been written better by strictly having old man of hoy and yrsa without needing to introduce new mythology

The lacuna concept felt cheap and removed a lot of what I thought kept the sense8 universe grounded in reality.

The mother was pointless to introduce like they could have gotten yrsa or some shit to get them the info on lila being in naples with whispers or just simply have his damn blockers wear off momentarily for will and wolfgang to figure out where he is instead of some weird old lady telling them her son’s backstory and somehow omniscient power of knowing whispers’ location

If Bodhi really didn’t want to be complacent with her stance on Milton and BPO why only NOW did she bother to take action? Why did the Mother only contact them now when God knows how long this weird zombie shit has been happening?

Also why the fuck did Bodhi not even bother to go with them to Naples to kill Milton? She didn’t want to remain complacent and yet she remained so throughout.

Jonas’ last monologue went on for too long; for some reason he really had to explain things instead of just “showing” and letting the audience infer to figure it out (particularly the psychic ligature/psycranium stuff)

Will and Wolfgang not confronting Whispers for a final time detracted from the emotional and psychological impact Whispers had on their well-beings.

“Right.”

“So, I told him, I would tell you right away, because I didn’t know how long you’d be in the city, and he might have to come another day! But your calendar was still open for tomorrow, meaning you didn’t have anything going on in the morning, so I put it on the schedule. So, if you had planned on staying in the city, I knew you would of put that on the calendar!”

“Yes, thank you, Bianca.” Aurea wanted to address why this couldn’t have ended at the phone call, or why the conversation itself couldn’t have been had on a phone call. But either way, it was an interruption nonetheless.

If Fennel had been annoyed, she was doing a swell job of hiding it all.

The walk to the old apartment seemed simultaneously dragged out yet not enough time. “No, I swear, she’s never mentioned anything about that to me. It was just the first thing that popped in to my head given the circumstance.”

I’d love to get married someday, but we don’t need to. We already live together.”

Amanita couldn’t help but chuckle. She always knew how boring Professor Juniper was, and truly could see her asking her sister to marry her in the same tone as asking her what they were going to do for lunch that day.

Arriving home at nearly midnight, alone, certainly wasn’t how she had planned to spend the evening. She threw her overcoat over the couch haphazardly, collapsing on the couch herself. She didn’t much care if she ruined the dress she was wearing in doing so.

There was a passing thought that she should change in to something more suitable for sleeping and make her way up the stairs to the bedroom proper. The professor allowed herself to wallow in her sorrow for another moment on the couch. She was being over dramatic over the circumstances and she knew it. “Mycologist,” said Aedan, resting his chin in his hand, “I have a particular proclivity for the amanita genus. Have you ever heard so lovely a name as the ‘destroying angel?’”

“Can’t say that I have. The Vishkar corporation has a great interest in the life sciences,” said the Realtor, “I can’t speak to our human resources department, but you could have a very comfortable position with us.”

“Don’t worry, he doesn’t bring his work home with him,” said Rei with an easy hand wave, “The kids should be fine.”

“Kids..?” Aedan’s eyes widened and he glanced at her.

“Potential kids,” said Rei, elbowing Aedan, “Vishkar’s supposed to have amazing schools, isn’t it?”

“Yes–kids–schools,” said Aedan, quickly turning his attention back to the realtor.

“Y’know, Null Sector, world ending, now-or-never stuff to think about,” said Rei.

“Vishkar is happy to provide couples and potentially growing families all the support they need,” said the Realtor.

“How kid-friendly is the neighborhood?” said Rei, “Everything’s so… sleek around here–”

“Hard-light technology is highly adaptive,” said the Realtor, checking her watch and now moving to usher them through the apartment, “And we make a point of allowing for large parks in the area for excellent quality of life. We’re in the process of putting one such park together for this development.”

“Parks!” Rei repeated, “Yes, we saw a lot of construction coming in here, didn’t we?”

“Loads of construction,” said Aedan, “Amazing how you’re able to take such swathes of the city so fast.”

“Hard-light does allow us to speed things up considerably,” said the Realtor, now several feet away from them, clearly trying to signal them into the next room.

“With so little resistance from the locals, too!” said Rei, making a point of lingering in the hallway with her arm hooked in Aedan’s, “You turn on the news these days and—”

“It… greatly benefits Vishkar’s competitors to paint us in a negative light,” said the Realtor, quickly, “But the quality of life in our developments speaks for itself. Now, I’m afraid we are on a schedule–”

“Oh of course, of course,” said Rei, walking down the hallway with Aedan.

The Realtor smiled with some relief and then let another door slide open. “So to finish off our tour, here’s our master bedroom,” she said, gesturing around, “As you can see you’ve got a gorgeous view of the city. Payment options are in the tablet I’ve given you.”

“Could you show us the showers work one more time?” said Rei, “Vishkar technology is so elaborate–”

“Oh the smart features of the bathroom are very intuitive,” said the Realtor, briskly walking to the door,  “But I’m afraid we’ve run well over our allotted tour time. But I’ll leave you to look around the apartment some more and we can discuss pricing when I return.”

With that the realtor headed out the door and the bright vapid grins decorating Aedan and Rei’s faces were replaced by cool, methodical expressions.

“Such a big apartment!” Rei said, walking through the apartment and stepping up on a chair to check the light fixtures for bugging tech.

“Gorgeous place,” said Aedan, pulling a listening device out of one of the lamps.

“Nice neighborhood,” said Rei, pulling a near microscopic camera out of the smoke alarm. After a brisk sweep, they met back up in the living room. 

“Standard showroom, seems clean,” said Aedan.

Rei brought a finger to her ear. “Marti? You there? We stalled as much as we could. You’ve got about 90 seconds until she gets back to her office.”

“Roger. We’ve gotten the data we need. The twins will set up the usual mission evac. How was playing house?”

“Oh we were adorable,” said Rei, heading for the door, “Meet you on the roof?”

“Meet you on the roof,” said Marti, clicking out of the comm network.

“McGillicuddy?” said Rei, looking at Aedan as they walked through the hall, “Really?”

“You made me sacrifice the hair for this mission–”

“It’s only for a week, you big baby—”

“You made me sacrifice the hair so I’m keeping the brogue. Anyway, the sooner I get this contact out, the better,” said Aedan, itching at his should-be-brown eye.

“You look good blonde, though,” said Rei.

“I look like an asshole blonde,” said Aedan.

“Little bit,” said Rei with a grin.

“Meanwhile you look amazing–” said Aedan.

“What can I say? Mom’s ashkenazi,” said Rei with a toss of her thick heat-styled curls, as she and Aedan took the stairs to the roof, “You know, that was a nice touch back there.”

“The ‘evil mushroom scientist’ bit? Oh I’ve been around enough of Vishkar’s types to know what they pick up–”

“No, I mean the part where you went sheet white when I brought up kids–Very organic,” said Rei.

“Oh–yes–that,” said Aedan, rubbing the back of his neck.

Rei paused on a stairwell. “…you weren’t acting,” she said, her brow crinkling.

“Well even for our dramatis personae, that’s… that’s a bit young,” said Aedan, continuing up the stairs.

“The role is young, stupid, horny rich couple, happy to show up, join Vishkar’s cult and gentrify the hell out of this city,” said Rei, “Of course my character would want kids to cement that.”

Aedan snorted. “Well, you’re the actress–”

“Stunt,” said Rei, with a slight smirk, which faded as they ascended the stairs, “Why do kids freak you out?”

“Kids don’t freak me out,” said Aedan, “The prospect of me ever having kids–that–I–I–don’t like to think about it.”

Rei’s brow crinkled a little. “Is this.. some kind of clone thing?”

“No–well, yes–well it’s nothing to do with mum. I’m my own person I just–It’s just–”

“Just what?”

“I wasn’t born, Rei. I was made,” said Aedan, “Nanites are dangerous–We don’t know if a human is capable of carrying something like me. If I ever–You know, we’ve ventured way too far into the realm of the hypothetical, so we should just–”

“So you’re scared of… what… whatever kid you might have might… burst out of someone like in the old sci-fi movies?” Rei tried to present the scenario as something ridiculous, but one look to the horrified expression on Aedan’s face and she pushed her hair back from her face, “…sorry.”

“I mean–yes, that’s probably not going to happen,” said Aedan, glancing off, “But I–I just don’t know if a nanite-based embryo might… hurt… whoever’s carrying it.”

Rei put a hand on Aedan’s shoulder, “I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable like that–”

“No it’s fine–It’s the mission, it’s the role—I should have thought ahead on it…”

“I don’t think it would, if it means anything,” said Rei, as they reached the door to the roof.

“What?” said Aedan.

“If you ever had a kid–you’re talking about it like it’s a monster or a parasite, but… it’s still human,” Rei ruffled his hair a little, “You’re still human.”

“…give or take several trillion nanites,” said Aedan, glancing off.

“But anyway–deep hypotheticals,” said Rei, opening the door, “Nothing we need to worry about right now.”

“Right, said Aedan, running a hand through his dyed-blonde hair as he watched Rei step out onto the roof where Marti, the twins, and their dropship were waiting, “Nothing to worry about.”

The M20 Technocracy Reloaded Kickstarter starts at 2pm Eastern US time tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28th!

Devices, procedures, and hypertech used by the Technocratic Union that explores the Enlightened Science, allowing operatives to apply similar effects in the field, if they have sufficient understanding of the principles that allow these gadgets to function.

More than a year ago, I polled our original M20 KS backers to see if they even wanted a KS for this project, as well as Victorian M20, and WOOO! did they! Original backers know that we never reached the final Stretch Goal that would have been used to finish and create this book – it was a big one – so I think they’ve been revved up for it for quite some time!

So, we’ve planned the project in order to bring this forward and we hope both those M20 backers and the many folks who discovered M20 since the original KS get a chance to check this out tomorrow!

What Else Are We Doing During Our Shut-In Time?

We’re adding some sales and project options to our current schedule in order to make it easier to buy and play our games during this time when our community has both shut-in and with financial challenges:

Then, starting Wednesday, all of our Jumpstart PDFs will be free on DTRPG with a new sale we’re doing to give folks a chance to try out our many game lines! If you’ve ever wondered about a line, wanted to try it out, then this is a great chance to get a starting adventure and some pre-generated characters to give it a try with!

We’ve also been looking at ways we can provide lower price-point projects beyond the sales, and we have started a few initiatives with that in mind.

For example, in addition to their larger, planned, PDFs, we’ll be offering some of our current projects broken into separate, smaller, PDFs. We’ll be starting with Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras 2, and when the single-volume PDF and PoD goes on sale in a couple of weeks, we’ll also offer individual chapter PDFs.

We’re hoping that will allow folks to pick up the chapters relevant to their current gaming for a much reduced cost. We’re also looking at other projects we can offer in the same way, that I’ll announce as we move on them.

For our community that has discovered the wonders of gaming with their friends virtually, through streaming or through Virtual Table Top venues like Roll20 or Astral, we’re building token and adventure/map packs to make that experience easier. I’ve already seen and OK’d packs for Scion, Scarred Lands, and the Trinity Continuum which we’ll have up and available very soon.

So we’re doing another Developer Town Hall Day next week where our Onyx Path crew will be available for our developers to check in with in a couple of designated time blocks since our devs live around the world and some are still doing their full-time jobs.

Our Dev Town Hall last month went great, so we’re hoping this one will be helpful for all our devs as well. This time though, I’m opening up the discussions just a bit to all of you folks.

Electronic Gaming!

As we find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is awesome! (Seriously, you need to roll 100 dice for Exalted? This app has you covered.)

Update: the devs are working on the updates for the roller in both Android and iOS; here is the rundown from them:

1) Redo the UI for system for Android. It will look the same as the current design. My goal is to have something ready by Saturday to send out to the Facebook users, asking them if this fixes the issues. This will be a beta type thing. This will break several of the fancy dice.

2) If the above worked out and the android users give all the clear, we’ll redo the graphics system to fix the fancy dice that got broken. We’ll do another Android beta through Facebook. This might take up to two weeks, as my schedule allows.

3) If everything worked well, we’ll release to Android for real at that point.

4) Port all of the existing stuff to iOS and release on that.

but for a leader, yes they have one!!!!! he doesnt show up until the 2nd big arc!!!! in the first arc (amanita as the main bad guy) the coattails are less of a threat and actually just act more as plot device/annoyance kinda??? and for like fun story scenarios, but in the SECOND ARC theyre gonna be a much bigger threat because they get a new leader which is gonna be the crow witchs baby brother (who is equally as brilliant as murda, but super evil) and they’ll also feature that technology vs magic struggle as well as being key to the big main bad guy of the second arc (unnamed)
