I’ve been making animal themed ceramic paint palettes. They’re bringing me immense joy. The orange and dark blue almost black combo? Perfection.

I'm finally (FINALLY) getting around to posting these proper photos I took of the lichen mugs in their natural habitat (Georgian Bay)!
Most of these sold at a summer market, but I'm just starting a new batch of mugs & will definitely be making a few more lichen ones. I'm also working on some bigger mugs as well, for people like me who absolutely require a half-litre of tea/coffee at a time...these wee mugs ended up being baby-cups at 200-250ml because I forgot about clay shrinkage (since this was my first time in ages making pieces where that mattered!).

my lovely fox dude. despite the arm breaking in the kiln, I think he’s gonna be really beautiful
and here he is with the tattoos covered in clear glaze. hopefully there isn’t too much dripping over the tats but he’ll be gorgeous either way

Other third of the glaze test bowl! Please remember that glazes vary a lot depending on clay body and temperature!
So the sky blue has already been introduced in a previous post, that is the lovely SW-116 Mayco Norse Blue.
Below it! (They had a slight overlap that resulted in that very runny and lovely blue) in a matte/shimmery gold and flowing blue is SW-186 Mayco's Azurite! I am shocked at the slight shimmer on this glaze (and that it's matte!) but it has a very lovely velvet feeling to the touch, and as you an see it flows beautifully. It's not very saturated colors but it's nice! *I imagine fired at Cone 5 it might be prettier but still nice!* the glaze seems fairly stable but I'd be wary of running.
Below that in orange with honey sparks is SW-117, Mayco's Honeycomb! I have to say I really enjoy this glaze. It's a nice warm coffee stain orangey color but with these small yellow crystal bursts. They flow nicely and it almost looks like the surface of a planet! Seems very stable, too. I tried it on some small pieces, no misbehaving at all!
And next, Western's 4538, Bkue Jasper Art. This is a glaze I really feel could be lovely at a lower temperature. It has a lovely glass to it, no pinholes or bubbling, but yeah it is very murky colored. Clearly lovely flow though so I would LOVE to see it fired Cone 5! Unfortunately this is kinda close to other glazes I have so not certain I'll use it much.
Lastly is Mayco's SW-140 black matte! And it lives up to it's name... almost. It certainly is matte, and black, and velvety to the touch (like, really lovely texture wise, would be GREAT for mug handles) but I would advise to apply liberally! It's oddly transparent somehow.

Oh hey I make ceramics now! Here is a hand thrown tumbler (on Tumblr woah) that should have been a mug but I have a mug curse where I never time my handles right. Hand painted design in underglaze.

It takes hours to paint a mug. It’s not just a mug. It’s also a painting.
Firing next week.

if u don't mind me asking for your clay creatures do u normally use glaze or paint? I'm just starting out with ceramics and I'm wondering if u had any recommendations for either? I always love how ur sculptures turn out :)
the ones that look "painted" are underglaze! I paint it onto dry greenware and then add a clear glaze over top after bisque firing. it's really as close as you can get to a "paint" for ceramic, it can be mixed and blended like paint and has no silica content so it doesn't turn glossy or stick to things in the kiln without another glaze overtop - it also doesn't move at all during firing like most glazes and stays exactly where you put it! my fav underglaze brand is coyote because their underglazes feel very thick and color dense (at least out of the brands I've used), so it requires less coats to get an opaque look (the tricky thing with underglaze is that it looks opaque when you paint it but fires semi-transparent, so it needs layering that you don't see the results of until the glaze firing). the clear glaze I use over my underglazes is amaco's mixing clear (technically part of their celadon line I think). if you do a clear glaze overtop of the underglaze it acts a lot like varnish over a painting, brightening it up and adding shine, but you can also leave the underglaze as-is, it will just be porous, matte, and a little chalky like any unglazed ceramic is. picking a clear glaze to go over underglazes can be tricky, because some of them will react to the colorants in the underglaze and you may get colors that disappear or become streaky under them, or your clear glaze can be too thick and look "milky", but I've had very good luck with the one I'm currently using.
if you want to get into glazing, i really like amaco's premade glazes, not only because they offer a nice selection, but because they have a lot of online resources for beginner ceramists to use - they have videos showing how they glaze pieces to get the correct amount of glaze on, a glaze layering tool that shows how different combinations of glazes (might) look together, and even a facebook group for people to post pictures and ask for advice in. ive been enjoying playing with glaze combinations and also playing with what parts of the sculpture I leave bare to just be the fired claybody.

can u tell us about ur bfa piece? is it all ceramic or any fun facts? feels good to see trans art!!!!
it is all ceramic!! just white stoneware clay (with a lot of added grog) and amaco underglazes mostly. some accent elements (the couch, the blanket) had real glassy glazes though! I need to experiment more with stuff that isn't underglaze again lolol. Edit: I forgot! The deers antlers are made on top of nichrome (high temp) wire so they are a little bit stronger. I think the bull's horns may be as well.
Fun fact about those pieces for you is certain animals are loosely based off of me and my roommates at the time :3 (trans households ftw)
my extra bonus fun fact is i was also taking a queer printmaking class at the time that were exploring basically the same topic, especially trans people having kids. here's some linocuts I worked on!

Some more golden-light mug photos from last night, feat. my glorious native echinacea + some obliging background bumblebees (see the last photo for a glamour shot of one of those bee-pals!).
Like the toad mugs, I left the outside unglazed & I think it really improves the colour-quality of the underglaze (& also feels so much nicer in the hand than glassy glossy glaze, at least to me). The insides of both of these are glazed with Amaco tourmaline & the outsides are a combo of Amaco, Coyote & Spectrum underglazes (mostly Amaco though - I love the pigmentation of their underglazes, even with this more watercolour-y technique!).

I was not excited for this piece at all after I decorated it, but once I saw it glazed it ended up being my favourite piece in that kiln load! funny how that happens with pottery sometimes. the last firing can change things so much.
that glaze around the rim is Amaco's Cosmic Tea Dust

Another example of underglazes changing drastically with glaze. The Amacon white is very good and opaque, yes. But if I'm going to a smooth soft fog effect, I'd use Mayco or Western white (I reviewed Western in a previous post).
Sometimes the "best" and most opaque underglazes are only for certain things!

Little conjoined twin lamb dish. This is so badly made I think I'll keep it for myself. Stoneware and underglaze.
