Ummmm sooooo I did some Lascaux-inspired mugs and I love them...........maybe TOO much? Even just in bisque-fired unfinished form?!!?!?? The possibility that one of these will live with me forever? Is HIGH?
There are three of them* & every single one is my precious perfect bébé!!!?!?!
(I had the good fortune of visiting Lascaux & seeing the beautiful interpretative recreation of the cave paintings when I was 10 and YES they have stuck with me and also YES I did, not long after that, also read Clan Of the Cave Bear at an Impressionable Age!!!!)
Hi everyone! Here is my first batch of mugs!! I'm so happy with the shape and color of these guys. Stay tuned for the other three - they are a light green.
these are the mugs that are gonna be available when my shop opens tonight! i may be retiring this form, (depending on how much i like the new one i've made) so it may be the last chance to get some of these shapes of cup from me!
We do Secret Santa with my partner’s family over Christmas, and this year I am Secret Santa to his dad. A very tall German man with a sparkling sense of humour and a generally lovely person to be around. He is usually laughing and loves to eat pretzels. I had it in my mind to use the very German pretzel cookie cutter I found at a store for this project.
This mug was hand-built using the slab technique out of yellow medium-grogged stoneware (20%, 0-0.5mm), and the pretzels were also cut out of slabs and attached to the mug using lots of scoring and slip. Would you believe, this is the second mug I built, the first one of grog-less stoneware didn’t even survive the initial drying stage because the pretzels were too thick and so much warping and cracking occurred, I cut my losses and made a new one. If I were to make this again, I’d probably make the pretzels even thinner as they were still a bit thick for their purpose. This new piece also went through three firings (one bisque, two glaze firings) because the first glaze combination was so dull and patchy that I had to reglaze. Fortunately the second glaze firing produced this sweet piece, just in time for Christmas! 🎄
Happy holidays!

I love how the glaze on these celestial mugs came out!
[Image Description: A white potbellied mug, with a black line drawing of a moon peaking out from behind clouds, in a style reminiscent of old etchings. The top half of the mug is covered in a drippy variegated glaze that changes from a pale blue to deep cobalt.]
I'm about to be away from my studio for a week, but I managed to get 8 of my new batch of mugs underglazed pre-trip & am super happy with them, so here are Too Many Photos of them from Various Angles!
