[Siblings elemental change AU]

Not any incorrect quotes today, but I give you some short facts, about the ship dynamic here.

Which means Jaya & Lavashipping Petrichorshipping!

[Petrichorshipping is the new name of the Cole x Kai ship here since Lavashipping doesn't make sense anymore] (Yes, this post was edited)

So let's START!

[Jaya]

Is very similar to the canon, but of course has it's difference.

Begining:

Jay is very much interested in Nya from the beginning, especially after seeing her fight and noticing how strong she is.

At first Nya thinks that Jay's flirting attempt are cute and pretty, so she let it go.

Later they start working together as ninjas and it makes they relationship improve faster. They are good teammates, who can work together good and chick someone’s ass.

Later:

Jay finnaly decides to ask Nya on a date and she agrees, beacuse she wants to find out if something would come from this.

The date turns into a battlefield against their enemies. But surprisingly, it didn't ruin it for her. Fighting side by side actually made the date more interesting and broke the ice.

As their first date turned out to be successfully, they start going out more often.

On the Destiny's Bounty they discover that both are interested in engineering and tinkering with gadgets.

When they work together on something Nya is often a welder with her fire powers and Jay is an electric.

Later they start dating, find more about each other and star building a healthy relationship.

The love traingle:

It never existed actually.

Yes, Nya made a love-test on the maschine, because the kids in the class wanted her to do it, but she didn't take it that seriously.

Nya is independent ninja, who truly forged a strong bond with Jay, not only romantically but also as a close friendship as a teammate, strengthened by shared interests and common challenges. She know what she wants.

Nya mocks the test result saying that Cole is only interested in cake.

Cole is never interested in Nya or she in him.

Jay would find out about the test results from Pixal and would only feel a little bad, thinking that there is someone better for Nya.

Nya would knock those silly thoughts out of his head, and everything would go back to normal.

Here things are more complicated.

Begining:

At the begining there isn't that much to say, because they are stranger to each other.

Kai is mostly focused on his sister and doesn't form any bonds with Nya's teammates. (I mean out of the blue your sister becomes a ninja and starts throwing fire from her hands, who wouldn't?)

In the meantime Cole is cusually spending his time with Jay & Zane as always.

They pretty much don't interract.

After Kai's feel more secure about Nya's safety there, then he starts more talk with others and even play video games with them.

Later:

Everything changes much after some incidents, which inclused water, when Kai had almost a panic attack.

Everyone besides Nya were suprised by his behaviour and after that incident and some explanation everyone knew how to react in similar kind of situation.

One time Cole would help Kai during his panic attack, when Destiny's Bounty would crush into water and in that way Cole'd gain some Kai's trust.

After that their relationship would improve a little and they would start interract more.

Later Kai would even ask Cole about training with him, because well Kai wants to be usefull and support his sister. [We wants to be as good as ninjas, be a part of team]

They would start training together and enjoy each others company. Talking, joke, later play video games, or even cook- [because Kai can cook and Cole like to eat]

They would slowly fall for each other.

Suprisingly Cole would be the first one to realise that-

Jay would notice Cole having a crush and surely taste him about that later.

Crushing time:

At the beginning of the reboot season. After the the kids were about to go on a trip, Cole in the last second akwardly ask Kai on a date.

Kai is taken aback, because he didn't expect that, but also akwardly agrees with a smile.

They never go on that date, because Zane 'dies'.

They don't talk for a long time until next season, because of the mess.

Kai isn't interested in Skylor or even interracts with her at all. [Instead Nya became a pretty good friends with her at the end of the season]

In the next season eveything becomes a big mess. Kai finds out about being master of water. And he needs overcome his fear of water.

In the meantime Cole becomes a ghost :(

Cole & Kai show each other a lot of support during this time and there's this big weird tension, because there is definitely something going on between them and both of them knew it. There was too much going on to just resolve it.

This situation make them also very flustrated and sad, because well they can't even hug each other show support.

In the season Skybound season Kai would face some misandrist from interview/medias, because he became a new ninja member. All of his friends would show him support and ect. At that time Cole & Kai would go out somewhere, but just as friends.

After Cole becomes human again, everyone becomes better.

After a lot of thinking Kai decides not to waste time and juat ask Cole on a date, to which he agrees without a second thought.

After that they pretty much get together.

And that's pretty much about it. I hope it was interesting or something..

Jaya Week 2023 Day 3: Surprise

I told myself I wasn't going to do this. "Finn, you have to do something different," I told myself in the mirror yesterday, but before I could stop myself I had already written 500 words of this and it was too late to start it again so, I did it (and I'm damn proud of it). I did the thing that everyone was probably expecting for this prompt and I can't even say I regret it, because this was a ton of fun to write and I love how it turned out.

“This is pointless!” Nya yelled, throwing down the magazine with enough force to bend the spine. “None of these have what I need!”

She stomped over the pile of already discarded magazines, crumpling their colorful covers with the soles of her sandals. Running her hands through her hair, Nya kept pacing, ignoring the stack of books that lay innocently on the floor in the corner of the room. Running out to get them without any of the others finding out had been a hassle, and she wasn’t entirely successful with keeping it a secret: Pixal had always been the best at figuring out what they were hiding.

Maybe she had already suspected it, as Nya was absolutely positive that she herself had never bought tests to stock their shared products cabinet in the bathroom. Of course, the night before she had gone looking for a test Nya had found herself hunched over the toilet well after midnight, unable to stop throwing up everything that Zane had made for dinner. Her only coherent thought was about how she was partly glad that Jay had decided to stay with his parents for the next couple days, but that she was also miserable without him there to whisper soothing words in her ear and hold back her hair.

A hand did pull her hair back, and Nya groaned when cool metal pressed against the back of her neck to feel for a fever. “Nya, what are you doing here at this hour?” Pixal had asked, crouching down next to the water ninja with a frown on her face.

“Been in here for a while,” Nya murmured, letting her cheek rest on the toilet seat, “and I can’t stop throwing up. Must’ve had something bad.”

“If you had food poisoning, then I guarantee that this bathroom would be much more crowded right now,” Pixal said, sitting down fully. “Are you sure that could be the only reason?”

“What do you mean?”

Pixal grimaced, like she had been hoping that Nya wouldn’t ask her that. “You and Jay are…active, yes?”

Nya raised an eyebrow. “...if you’re implying what I think you’re implying, then yes.”

“Have you considered the possibility of being pregnant?”

Nya.exe stopped working.

Her friend (sister, let’s be honest) had comforted her for the rest of the night as she tried to put the pieces together, eventually breaking down in loud sobs that had Pixal wrapping her arms around Nya’s shoulders. Nya tried to explain that she wasn’t crying because of the fact that she might be pregnant (oh, First Master she was pregnant), but Pixal shushed her. She didn’t have to explain anything, the samurai had said as she smoothed her hand between Nya’s shoulderblades.

It wasn’t long before the other boys found out. Cole and Zane were the first of them, both having walked in on Nya looking at web pages with cute pregnancy reveal ideas. She hated all of them.

Cole looked concerned when he stepped into the room to find Nya sitting upside down on their couch, her phone thrown over the edge and lying face down on the floor. “Everything okay, Nya?”

She groaned, which made Cole look over to his nindroid brother. Zane could only shrug, “Has Jay done something to upset you?”

“You could say that,” and maybe just a little of her inner turmoil leaked into her voice, because soon her two brothers were sitting on either side of her, Cole leaning against the back while Zane sat up straight. They waited until she had resituated herself to be sitting correctly, and both of their faces darkened when they saw how upset she looked.

“Whatever stupid thing he’s done now,” Cole said seriously, “it doesn’t mean anything. We’ll give him a talk for you, Nya.”

Zane was nodding in solidarity, and Nya knew that she should probably say something to make sure her Yin kept all of his fingers. “It’s not entirely Jay’s fault.”

“Then what happened?” Zane asked gently, taking her hand in his robotic one. “I have not seen you like this for quite some time, Nya. Cole and I only want to help you.”

No time like the present, she thought to herself, biting her lip before biting the bullet. “If I tell you guys something, you have to keep it a secret, alright?”

“Absolutely.” the earth ninja reaffirmed, Zane echoing his sentiment.

“I’m pregnant.”

Both of them had stared at her. Cole’s lips were moving up and down like a fish, while Zane’s eyes were wide with surprise. Nya shrunk into herself, suddenly very self-conscious of what exactly she had just told her brothers, and the movement brought them back to their senses when they cuddled closer on both sides.

Cole was the first one to get over his shock. “You’re serious?”

“Yes,” Nya sighed, “I’m serious. I was throwing up all last night and Pixal got me a few tests to confirm it. They were positive.”

“I’m gonna be an uncle?!”

That was not the reaction that Nya had been anticipating. “Yes?”

“Holy crap!” Cole’s face lit up with an elated grin. “Zane! We’re gonna be uncles!”

Nya watched in amazement as her two biggest brothers danced around their living room, Cole whooping at the top of his lungs while Zane congratulated her with gusto. She knew that they never would’ve expressed their true feelings if any of them had been negative, but she wasn’t quite expecting the level of joy that was filling the room to the brim. Although Nya should’ve known better than to think that the other ninja would be anything less than supportive of her and Jay.

She made them promise to keep it a secret until Jay had gotten back, and they both had solemnly sworn with their hands over their hearts (in Zane’s case, his power source) to not breathe a word until Jay knew.

Which had led Nya to right now, tossing yet another baby magazine to the side in frustration as she sat down on her bed with a huff. For all of the hubbub that the small things generated at the grocery store, why were all of them so useless?!

Knocking on her door frame, Lloyd peeked his head in, quickly followed by Kai. “Nya?”

Diving for the pile of things on the floor, Nya did her best to cover them up. “This isn’t what it looks like!”

“What is it…supposed to look like?” Lloyd asked, and Nya watched in horror as Kai picked up a magazine that she had hurled at the door in a fit of rage over awful baby name suggestions.

Kai held it up to read the cover, eyes narrowing. “Ninjago’s Top Baby Names…wait. Is Benthomaar pregnant?!”

WHAT?!

“No, you idiot!” Nya yelled, forgetting about the magazines she was hiding and storming up to her brother and snatching the magazine from his hands, rolling it up into a tube and whacking him over the head. “Benthomaar can’t even get pregnant!”

“But there’s some ocean animals where the guy gets pregnant, right?! Isn’t he one of those?!”

“Those are seahorses, Kai!” she seethed, threatening to whack him again, “Does he look like a seahorse to you?”

Wow, the books weren’t kidding when they said the pregnancy hormones were intense.

Her older brother was saved by Lloyd gently wrapping his arms around her middle, and Nya relaxed when she felt his head plop down onto her shoulder. “There’s no need to be violent, Nya. We just wanted to come check on you because you’ve been acting a little weird for the past few days, and Cole and Zane won’t tell us anything. Is something wrong?”

She bit her lip. This wasn’t exactly how she wanted to tell them, but it would have to suffice. “I-I’m pregnant, not Benthomaar.”

A beat. Two beats. Suddenly she was being twirled in a circle by Lloyd, who was also bouncing up and down and shouting with glee. When he finally put her down, he gave her one of the brightest smiles she had ever seen. “Nya! That’s amazing! You and Jay are gonna be parents!”

For some reason, Lloyd’s reaction wasn’t the one that Nya was the most concerned about. She turned around to look at Kai, who had a rare soft smile on his face. His eyes were blinking with unshed tears, and Nya could only hope that they were from happiness rather than the disappointment that she had been worrying about.

Kai saw her hesitation and held out his arms. “C’mere sis.”

Nya didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around her brother’s shoulders and squeeze, feeling his arms coil themselves around her waist in an embrace that brought back all of her childhood memories. Kai’s chuckle only made her squeeze tighter. “I’m so proud of you, Nya. It’s going to be great for you and Jay, just wait and see.”

“Yeah,” she said wetly, willing herself to not cry, “we’re gonna have a great time.”

“What’s going to be a great time?”

The water ninja was not prepared for the speed at which Kai let her go, wheeling around and tackling her Yin five feet down the hall with a surprised shout. Nya startled when Lloyd slammed the door to her and Jay’s shared bedroom shut, and the blond turned to face her with wide eyes.

“Kai can keep him busy,” Lloyd said quickly, “but I don’t know for how long. I’ll help you put these away so he doesn’t see!”

Except for some reason, Nya wasn’t sure if she wanted to hide them. She paused, and Lloyd stared at her in bewilderment, and both of them jumped when they heard Kai hollering down the hall for reinforcements. It only took a second before she heard Jay breaking out into a fit of panicked giggles and yelling for Kai to stop tickling him.

She was a good Yang, and Jay was one of the most sensitive people she had ever met when it came to tickles, so she couldn’t really leave him out there to fend for himsefl, right?

Lloyd didn’t try to stop her from opening the door and stepping out of the room, only following with a curious look on his face. Nya was not at all surprised to see the scene before her: Jay was floundering around, laughing, desperately pushing at Kai’s chest while the fire ninja went to town on his brother’s ribs. Cole came rocketing from around the corner with a devious grin on his face, with Pixal and Zane trailing behind, both looking equally befuddled.

“Look who's finally home!” Cole said, and Kai only paused in his onslaught to let the earth ninja haul Jay up by the armpits. Nya knew that if she was going to interfere, it had to be before Cole curled his hand into her Yin’s underarms to make Jay start screaming bloody murder.

“Boys,” she chastised, and everyone turned to look at her. Jay’s face went from nervous anticipation to joyful glee in a matter of seconds. “Leave him alone.”

Cole and Kai looked somewhat disappointed, with the former letting Jay down to stand on his own two feet. Jay rushed forward, exclaiming her name and hugging her tightly to his chest. Butterflies swarmed in her stomach when she felt him kiss her neck, and Nya pulled back a little to cup his face in her hands.

Jay pecked her on the lips, and Nya was all too happy to reciprocate despite Kai and Lloyd fake-gagging in the background. “Hi, sweetheart. How were your parents?”

“Good,” Jay said sweetly, rubbing his thumb along the small of her back. “They’re all good, except Ma was asking a lot of questions about grandkids, for some reason. I think she and Pa have been going to the park and hanging out around the playground way too much.”

Nya could’ve drowned Cole when he coughed in the background, followed up by Kai muttering something about how Jay interrupted them. Jay turned to the brunette with a questioning frown. “What did I interrupt?”

She glared at Kai, who only shrunk back behind Zane with a sheepish look. Jay looked back at her, noticing the underlying nervousness in her expression. He squeezed her hand, and Nya glanced up to see the worry in his eyes.

“Hey,” he started, and Nya was surprised at how softly he was speaking, “is everything okay?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Nya said in a tone that she hoped was confident, but it didn’t sound very convincing; Jay’s look of worry only grew. “Everything’s fine, Jay. It’s just…”

“What?”

Taking a deep breath, Nya steeled her nerves, looking her Yin in the eyes. “Jay, I’m pregnant.”

“You’re-you’re what?” Jay stammered, his face blushing ever so lightly in a way that made Nya want to kiss him senseless. “You’re pregnant?”

“I am.”

“I’m gonna be a dad?”

“Surprise! You’re gonna be a dad, Jay,” and nothing could’ve prepared Nya for the tears that started rolling down his face, and she was quick to start wiping them away with her thumbs.

He leaned forward and kissed her softly, his hands travelling up and tangling in her hair. She smiled into the kiss, some of his tears touching her lips and turning their sweet kiss salty. When Nya finally pulled back, there wasn’t an ounce of sadness to be found, and instead laughter bubbled out of Jay’s mouth.

“I-I’m gonna be a dad,” and he turned to look at all of his brothers and sister, who all had matching looks of happiness on their faces, “I’m going to be a dad!”

Cole was the first one to rush forward, quickly followed by Kai as they glumped the blue ninja into a big hug, making room for Lloyd to pop in under Kai’s arm and Zane wrapping his arms around them from behind. Jay’s smile only grew with every bit of praise that they showered him with, although Nya was sure she saw some pokes into his belly every few moments.

She startled when Pixal hugged her from behind, laying her head on Nya’s shoulder. “I think this was the best surprise you could’ve ever given him, Nya.”

And Nya started laughing, because it was the best surprise that she could’ve asked for herself, too.

I liked how he kinda took on a uncle roll to Nya in season 5 that was pretty sweet. I also like that despite him having a nice side like that he still keeps going off and causing issues like yeah you go old man

Also Rex is cool I like the concept of Rex, I cant remember if it’s a mech or a plane but the whole whistle summoning thing pretty dam kool

I keep saying cool I need a new word,,

SEABOUNDDD BABBBBBYYYYYYYY Nya content!!!! Lots of Nya content!!!!

No yeah the season is really sweet, Nya not being able to properly word how much people mean to her so showing it in such a big sacrifice is AGHHHHH

I mean yes I get it was mainly to save the literal world but oh my god her never saying I love you back to Jay UNTIL it was when he wouldn’t even be able to know she did 😭

I have some pretty personal reasons I like seabound too, so the mother and daughter plot hit HARDD even if Maya is a lovely person. I liked how it showed Nya overcoming so many issues and learning just how powerful her ability is.

Nya is just so damn relatable in this season??

Also I forgot the Jaya dance game scene is in this season, its rlly cute :,)

there is definitely areas of the season I think could of been better, I wish more time was spent on the like seafolk’s tensions with each other as I felt the king Basically just like does a speech at Kalmaar on why he is a bad person instead of like showing it more?

I also tend to prefer when villains have proper motives and to me Kalmaar just seems like a hater from birth without too much reason as to why he feels so strongly about it

I understand that the episodes in this one are only 10 minutes though so that makes it difficult

Technically not part of seabound but I also didn’t like how much emphasis was put on the water merging being permanent only for it to very easily be fixed in crystalised, I get they need to move on with the plot and the show wouldnt feel the same without Nya but AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (I really hate the whole no one actually dies thing ninjago has going on)

Anyway, this season reminds me of the song Sea, Swallow Me by the Cocteau Twins!! I’ll link it here if anyone hasn’t listened to it:

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

Okay now I will talk abt my season rating in Ninjago. I don't hate any season, I love them all but I have my reasons

16. Sons of Garmadon

Okay so my least favourite one is the 9th Season. I don't necessarily think it's bad, in fact it's good just like every season of Ninjago. I just don't like it as much as the other episodes. I REALLY hate Harumi in this season. How she betrayed Lloyd and stuff... It's just not it.

15. Hands of time

I like the concept of this season and how it shows so much stuff about the past of the elementary masters but I just don't like Crux and Acronix. They were kinda boring in my opinion... Yeah for sure Acronix was kinda funny with all his love for stupid phone games but other than that, it's just not really it. It's still over Sons of Garmadon because I really like to know more about the past.

14. The island

This one could be so cool, I love the Island concept and the small story of Wojira but it was just so short. I love Ninjago but why does this only have 4 episodes? Maybe the story doesn't need as much as explanation as the others but it's so short :,) Other than that I like the characters a lot! And I love the jungle concept.

13. March of the Oni

Same as the Island, it's so short! You could've just put it at the end of Hunted and not make it an own 'season' (yes I know it's a short but on the Wikipedia page it's listed as season..) BUT HEY! Jay asked Nya to be his Yang and I LOVE this scene. That's why it's higher than the island. And the fighting is epic asf.

12. Master of the mountain

This season is really really good! I enjoy Shintaro and I LOVE Vania. Also Vangelis is a very cool villain but tbh... the stuff with the Munks and Gekkles was a bit annoying. Still, Coles past was cool and his new special ability. I just like other seasons more but it's a good one!

11. Secrets of forbidden Spinjitzu

At this point the rating is hard. This season is enjoyable and Aspheera might be one of my favourite villains ever. She's just so cool with her Egypt concept. And poor Kai for loosing his powers ): Also I like the never realm and especially Akita as a character! But I still think the whole thing with Zane and the Ice emperor is a bit strange... not saying it wasn't cool, it actually got me in shock. I really haven't thought of that solution. Yes, this season is amazing but not as good as the others

10. Rise of the Spinjitzu Master

It's the first season and absolutely legendary! I love the snakes as enemy and seeing their early days gets me emotional asf, just as seine how they got to discover their true powers. Jaya getting a thing, Cole talking to his dad. This season is overall great! I like the others a bit more for reasons but still, this is the first and it's legendary!

9. Rise of the snakes

I love this one even more! I think the episodes just fit my taste more than the ones in season one? Also GARMADON AS VILLIAN!!!! I personally think he's kinda cool, so nothing to brag about. Also the episodes are all just amazing!! It's a very good season and I am sad that it's still that far in the back.

8. Hunted

I DONT KNOW HOW AND WHY. But I was so invested watching hunted. I am not a big fan of Sons of Garmadon BUT HUNTED. Woah that shit really got me catched. The first world is amazing and the dragons everywhere and the Iron Baron as villain is cool. Also Faith is so cool and just everything is perfect. It's a deserved place here.

7. Posession

I think we all can agree when I say the Ghost Whip is the BEST intro ever. Also Morro is an amazing villain, even his sidekicks Ghoulta, Soul Archer and Bansha are so amazing. The cloud kingdom is such a cool concept and I absolutely love Ronin, so YEAH! Ronin debut!! This season might be a lot of ppls fav one, not mine but still has a deserved 7th spot.

6. Seabound

I know people are gonna think I am crazy but Seabound is literally SO FRICKING GOOD! Prince Kalmaar is an AMAZING villian! He is cool! And I love Benthomaar a lot. The underwater stuff is so cool and the end is just so sad. It literally brought me to tears (it's hard to bring me to tears at a stupid series.) I'ts so emotional in a beautiful way. It hurts.

5. Rebooted

Okay this might be an unpopular opinion, especially because it's a rather short season but I was obsessed with it while watching. Cyrus is one of my fav characters AND PIXAL!!! Ah I love her so much. The Overlord is also kinda cool!!! It's amazing for such a short season, It's so amazing and underrated. And the intro is kinda good.

4. Crystalized

Crystalized is amazing, argue with a wall. I know people think it's rushed and so sudden but I love it! The different villains comming back, Harumis and Garmadons character development AND FRICKING SALLY. She is so underrated, I love her! The only think I really hate are the new Ninja. They're so annoying, for what... at least they don't annoy in the end anymore. THE END! Holy shit this is the best thing ever. I cried like a lil kid loosing its fav toy. It's so touching and sweet, inner steel playing in the background and CHRISTOFERN. I think it's an amazing end and Tommy created a masterpiece with this season.

3. Prime Empire

Underrated. Prime empire is SO underrated! It's literally so cool!! A giant video game season with amazing characters and an amazing concept. The NPCs breaking their roles AND SUPERSTAR ROCKIN JAY!!! He might be my fav thing ever. This season is a masterpiece and you cannot get me away from obsessing over this one.

2. Skybound

Another rather unpopular opinion but Skybound is amazing. I love this season more than myself. Nadakhan is an awesome Villain, with Master Chen my absolute favourite. I LOVE pirates and the vibe, that's why it catched my heart in like a second. Of course it's also sad asf, but Nadakhan as villain did a good job. His crew too! They're all so cool tbh. It's just so amazing I cannot explain it in words. AND THE INTRO AHHHHHHH!

1. Tournament of elements

I seriously love this SO MUCH. Tournament of elements has everything you need: A cool ass craizy stupid villain, A TON of amazing characters with amazing abilities. The villain has a cool dream and the final of the season is the best thing ever. All the dragons and the people... I am so glad that at least some of them (Skylor, Tox, Karlof, Neuro, Mr. Pale) are appearing later again. I am going to rewatch one episode of ninjago a day until I ether give up or finish

I will put my thoughts down as I watch it and rate each episode out of ten.

Day 1

Ep 1 rise of the snakes

The old monastery was so empty

Those controllers are huge

I want to play what they are playing why can’t this be a real game

Not cool sensei wu you didn’t even let them save

Cole talks with Kai’s voice wow he is magic

Yes the tornado of creation the super op move that will only be used three(I think it’s three might be wrong) times throughout the intire series, but seriously so my situations could have been solved if they just made the tornado

The game magically didn’t reset and erase there progress

The people that “spotted lord garmadon” need to get glasses. How do you confuse an adult dark warlord, with a literal 10 year old

The ninja bumping into eachother looks so awkward but is still somehow funny

Jay being awkward around nya is always good for my Jaya heart

Really Kai you could have killed someone with opening the door with out checking if someone was under it

Also did the monastery always have a dragon stable or did they have to add it

Jays voice was really low when he said “that leaves us with one choice” and then the “run” broke my eardrums

Maybe if you hadn’t strung Lloyd up like a piñata and taken him to wu so much of this whole show could have been avoided

Wu never teaches them anything they ask him to

Patience nya you just have to wait thirteen seasons and you can become a dragon

Final thoughts

This is a good intro into the season but it drags on a bit with the green ninja tournament and without watching the pilots you might be a bit confused. Lloyd was as cute as I remembered. The ninja go the other hand were a bit boring. I liked the set up they did and the animation was good if not a bit clunky. Over all I give this episode a 7/10

*rolls up sleeves* aight this is gonna be long so bear with me

I recently discovered a game called Assassins. It's kinda like Mafia or Body Body. Every person playing is assigned someone in the group to 'kill.' To kill someone you must a) have no witnesses and b) make physical contact (I mean you could throw something at them or give then food and say you 'poisoned' it or something)

You can poke them or tap them to kill and be like 'hey I killed you ur dead now,' and then you get assigned the person they were going to kill, but now can't because you killed them first. So it continues until one assassin is left standing. It can last for weeks.

So the goal of the game is to be the last assassin standing BUT there's a catch: if you have at least one shoe off, you're safe. You can't be killed, but you can't kill anyone either.

You're allowed to form alliances, but you're always wary of EVERYONE. someone wants to talk to you alone? You better do it barefoot, just in case.

ALL THAT TO SAY, I present to you: the ninja and friends (Pixal, Skylor, Vania, perhaps Akita and the elemental masters) playing this game and going all out.

Hey, that game sounds a lot like Murder! Some colleges play that near finals week, or so I hear... in that game, you’re only safe in your dorm or when you’re not dressed. Assassins sounds way more fun, though >:)

Wu deals out all the targets.

He doesn’t play, just watches the chaos; he thinks it’s great reflex training and outright encourages them to sabotage each other.

Every one of the Ninja’s major allies gets involved. All six Ninja, Skylor, Pixal, Vania, the Prime Empire NPCs, the Elemental Masters, friends from the Never Realm, Ronin, Maya and Ray, etc.

Unlike the other parents, Ed and Edna sit out and let their junkyard be neutral territory.

Lou doesn’t want to be part of the fighting either.

It starts innocently, with plastic butter knives that have each name written in sharpie. If a person ‘dies,’ their knife is broken and the killer gets the one they had.

At first, it’s simple.

Cole stabs Kai and has a new target of Unagami, but he doesn’t have the heart to kill a kid (at the moment).

Skylor gets the drop on Scott and steals his hat for a bit, but he eventually steals it back in a later game.

Griffin Turner consecutively ‘kills’ Ray, Pixal, and Dareth; he knows how to pick locks.

The number of targets drops fast, and then everyone’s on edge. Half the players remain.

Everyone starts getting nervous.

The remaining girls form an alliance, which is quickly broken after Tox kills Chamille with ‘poisoned’ pizza.

Kai runs a betting pool on all the other combatants. It’s been running for three weeks.

He makes a profit off every failed bet, which is enough to replace his fancy hair gel after Jay wasted it all.

Jay is operating by a policy of ‘nobody can hurt me if I don’t see anybody but Nya.’

After a few weeks, Nya poisons Jay with a kiss.

Jay is (mostly) too busy being happy about getting a kiss to be upset about losing the game.

The game ends after two months. The winner is Racer Seven. She is rewarded handsomely, including a car tune-up courtesy of the mechanics-interested Ninja.

Vania almost won because she’s usually in Shintaro, but Paleman snuck in. Chompy sniffed him out a second too late.

Wu is satisfied by the results of the game. They decide to play it once every year, starting on the first of the year.

So far, the game’s been going for three years.

Ooooohhh I was scared of saying this...

Skybound is okay. And just okay.

I’ve recently seen a some people try to explain why THIS season is Ninjago is an underrated top tier season. Therefore I should say that as well...

I’m glad that’s what you all think...

But yeah... this season just doesn’t work for me all that well. Even on my most recent viewing of the season for some essay posts, I still feel that way. I don’t hate it as much as I used to, but I still can’t get fully into it no matter how hard I try to. Even as a kid, Skybound was, overall, my LEAST favorite season of the 7 OG seasons. Obviously, it is NO LONGER my least favorite season overall now, (That prize goes to Secrets Of The Forbidden Spinjitsu), as a matter of fact, it’s actually a whole tier higher now than I initially had it, because after March Of The Oni and until Seabound would come, Ninjago was kind of on a losing streak (Master Of The Mountain was okay, but didn’t exactly change my mind) So Skybound honestly feels REFRESHING.

But though it’s probably bordering Hands Of Time and I kind of flip flop between them, Skybound is STILL my least favorite of the OG seasons.

I will say, there is ONE aspect of this season I found truly exceptional, and that’s Jay’s character arc.

I wasn’t a fan of it as a kid because of the fact he lied to Nya at his own free will, but WOW have I warmed up to Jay now, especially thanks to this season fleshing him out to be more than just ‘the genki guy.’ Say what you will about how much derailment certain ninja characters suffer nowadays, ALL the ninja are still fleshed out in so many ways and very much feel like people, especially in the OG seasons, where they’re allowed to be flawed and even selfish at times. It makes them feel like authentic people.

Jay isn’t any exception to this, as even though I’m not a big fan of X’ing the other ninja out of the story, in some ways, it benefits from that to make Jay be developed in a position where he has to be more than just a joke. We see every step in that process. We see him accidentally hurt people’s feelings with his ‘perfect world’ mindset, we see him try to venture out of his real life, we see how that pains him, we see what the idea of obtaining the girl and the money can do to his head, we see him actually talk to Nya and start to respect her boundaries, we see him be pressured into a lot of things and yet still keep his gut knowing that his selfish wishes are going to screw everyone over. This season really does feel like it’s directly CALLING OUT Jay’s flaws up until this point, where while he was definitely still likeable, caring, and yes funny, he actively tried to push away the life he was raised in from complete embarrassment, he became paranoid about not getting his way, and does actively lie to people about his worth, even before Skybound. Needless to say, Jay is a person with some selfish desires, and this season actively tests that and what Jay actually needs in order to obtain his wishes. And it’s honestly way more beautiful than I originally gave credit for.

His relationship with Nya is also a high point in the season. I find it annoying that in this season, THE MOST, they thrust Nya into the ‘overcoming the damsel stereotype’ and the ‘feminist’ allegory, and whenever that’s on the nose, it’s obnoxious. But to be fair, Nya’s arc here isn’t COMPLETELY about that. She’s just trying to fit into her team and recognizing her own lack of skill in some areas that sometimes she just can’t control. That it’s okay to rely on your friends and you shouldn’t be scared to show your feelings. She’s not always right, and goes too far in some places, but her interactions with Jay feel way more real than I gave credit for. Like, oh my god, two people ACTUALLY TALK TO EACH OTHER. It’s one aspect of Jaya that makes me truly accept it, (even if I don’t gush over it 24/7 for personal reasons) the fact that Jay and Nya not only actually have conversations, but we actually get to see them in an ACTUAL relationship FROM THE START. This is a down point in their relationship, and even removing the love triangle bs that caused their falling out, they still want what’s best for each other even if they don’t fully understand what the other wants. They both need to put down what THEY want and listen to each other.

Jay wants to do everything for her, and Nya wants to feel as though she deserves it.

So these two characters and their relationship is GREAT this season...

Everything else about Skybound is mediocre at best.

Oh boy! The other ninja on this team seem to have relationships with the word ‘wish.’ I like now the season does NOT use the other ninja AT ALL or explores that AT ALL and forces them into being trapped into a magic sword for half of the season. (I mean, I guess Cole had some crisis with learning how to vanish, but like, who cares?) You could argue it’s a Jay centric season, so therefore the other ninja don’t NEED to be given anything to do, but in the other seasons, when it was focused on one ninja, the others STILL had stuff going on! They still had plotlines! Possession was a Morro focused story, but it still gave Nya an awakening arc, it still gave Kai a crisis, it still gave Cole a crisis, the other ninja were given stuff to do. Rebooted? Even if the love triangle was a bad sub plot, it GAVE the people involved stuff to do. Even season 2, a Lloyd coming of age story, even if it was filler the first half, STILL put in time to have one Zane focused episode. So Skybound has no excuse.

This is like The Tournament of Elements, only the characters who were eliminated from the games, were NOT heard from again, just trapped inside the magic staff until the last episode where they’re freed to fight in the climax. It’d be as if though once Cole was eliminated, he’s NOT heard from again UNTIL the penultimate episode of the season. What made Tournament of Elements a fan favorite was... for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that ALL the ninja had stuff to do and contributed to the story. To the point where it’s really hard to say who is the main character of the season, because the season takes so much time on everyone, that it makes it feel like this is a team of mcs, rather than a one man band. Which was also a theme of that season. We don’t usually get that anymore.

Obviously, having one ninja be the focus of a season is NOT a bad thing. It has worked before, like the recent Seabound. But in Skybound, it just feels like the other ninja don’t even exist, and that’s sad, especially when they introduce interesting plotlines for them at the very last minute before they’re X’d from the script. Zane losing Pixal, Lloyd’s wisdom issue, Kai wanting to see his father again, (though to be fair, the latter would be a focus in Hands Of Time) these could be interesting plotlines on ALL the ninja’s relationship with wishes, not just Jay. It would make Jay blatantly explaining the theme of ‘make your wishes happen, don’t just sit around and wish’ far more impactful.

But the season just doesn’t do that.

Nadakahn is also an inconsistent villain. The start of the season actually sets up a really compelling and even sympathetic antagonist with this Djinn. A pirate captain who abandoned his home and family to pursue a life of plunder, only to never be able to return home until year later to find your home and your father destroyed, thus wanting to avenge it all, is such a compelling story for him. It could potentially lead to a great contrast with Jay, as neither of them truly value what Nya needs until Jay learns to do so for her, it’d also be a great contrast that calls out Jay while also makes Nadakhan seem like a warning sign-

Oh wait, he’s just a selfish, greedy, ruthless bad guy who wants to be a genie king.

He even kills his own crew, THE ONLY FAMILY HE HAS LEFT, for no reason other than they were getting in the way of him being king. Like, even if you’ve gone crazy or been corrupted by the power in your weapon, a Djinn this broken from his losses would NOT want to discard the few people keeping him sane. It’s just SUCH an assassination to what they set up for this villain, and it destroys any intrigue I have for him in the latter half of the season.

Honestly, he just feels like a first draft of Harumi now that I think about it. They both had their lives destroyed by the ninja (passively) and were left with twisted morals and beliefs that they’re doing the right thing for Ninjago. It worked for Harumi, because it was built up to, fleshed out, and wasn’t assassinating her character in the process. It doesn’t work for Nadakhan.

The storyboarding and pacing of this season is just so jarring. It has worse storyboarding than Rebooted, which had less episodes to work with! Skybound feels like a completely different season halfway through.

That’s mostly because the actual plot doesn’t FEEL like it’s getting started until episode 4. Because we spend the first three episodes with a whole subplot where the Ninja are framed and become public enemies, which is ALREADY a stupid concept on paper that even in execution disregards any and ALL logic and common sense. Like, you expect me to believe that after these ninja have saved this city MULTIPLE TIMES, done all sorts of selfless deeds for the citizens, and have proven to be good and trustworthy saviors, would suddenly turn into criminals who steal from museums, and ALL of the citizens, LITERALLY ALL OF THE CITIZENS, would BELIEVE THAT INSTANTLY?!! I always hate this sort of plotline for it removing any common sense in ANYBODY!

On top of that, this framing plotline is NOT even connected to the rest of Skybound! (I mean, except for the fact that they found out about the venom through Soto, but like, you could EASILY write it so that they cross paths with Soto in a different way) Nadakhan apparently can disguise himself as other people. But he’s not seen doing this again afterwards. On top of that, they literally say he cannot wish for himself! How did he even do this? Did someone on the streets randomly say “Oh I hate the ninja! I wish they would be locked up somewhere!”

Does the pacing get any better after that plotline is over with-?

No, not really actually.

It’s not as bad, but it’s still not good. We spend so little time on the Tiger Widow island that it’s crazy. And that place clearly has some creatures that could lead to hijinks, but once Jay gets kidnapped just half an episode after arriving, the others just rest on the beach trying to get out, with only ONE animal hijink. Honestly, I think the ‘My Dinner With Nadakhan’ episode would benefit BEAUTIFULLY if it was an episode with ONLY Jay. NO cuts to the other ninja, JUST JAY being a prisoner on the ship. The title of the episode already implies that this is a first person from Jay’s perspective, why not use that to it’s advantage and have this be an episode with only Jay and Nadakhan, to flesh out them both and their dynamic? And then the next episode we could have the other ninja take up three quarters of that episode in the process of getting off the island and saving Jay. It would honestly make Episode 6 of this season feel way more memorable in my opinion, and a lot more experimental. The Jay stuff is really compelling this season! Watching ninja talk about him while making a raft on a beach is just boring!

And then the climax just feels so rushed, and therefore clumsily put together. Episode 8 of season 6 is easily the best episode of this season, but then we only have two episodes left to actually stop Nadakhan and stop hiding. And by that point, all the ninja except for Jay are captured, so we have to have a whole rescue operation with outsider characters, who have done next to NOTHING all season to earn this moment, save the other ninja (just so they can do nothing) stop a wedding between Nya and Nadakhan, have two of his crewmates turn good suddenly (assuming because they don’t want to die) and actually fight off Nadakhan. ALL of which happens in just TWO EPISODES. There’s no room to breathe, and next to none of this stuff was actually built up to, or necessary in the long run. If we didn’t waste time with that framing plotline, this stuff could actually be built up to, especially for the ending, which...

Yeah. I can see why it’s controversial. Honestly, Nya’s ‘death’ is actually pretty sad, not gonna lie, but it also forces Jay to wish to undo the entire season. Thus, because of this ONE slip up, the entire season NEVER HAPPENED. Which basically means you don’t even have to watch this season AT ALL, and you don’t miss anything. I mean, I guess the one thing that makes Skybound relevant is that Jay and Nya make up and get back together, but really, you could easily let them have a single conversation in either season 5 or 7 where they apologize for the love triangle junk and kiss and make up. In fact, Hands of Time actually kinda does that for one scene.

Overall, For Jay or Jaya fans, I can see why you guys love this season so much and why you want it to be recognized and appreciated better. I just can’t relate.

I really wish I could!

I wish everything about the season was on the same level of brilliance as Jay’s character arc and his relationship with Nya. I wish the other ninja weren’t X’d out out of the plot and actually had stuff to do that correlates with the season’s theme about wishes. I wish Nadakhan remained a sympathetic antagonist who is an intriguing foil to Jay. I wish the framing plotline didn’t exist. I wish the pacing wasn’t terrible. I wish the ending actually made the season feel like an impactful story point on the franchise and not just a filler fever dream.

But as is, Skybound is just an okay season.

But hey, it’s still better than season 11.

My thoughts on Seabound!!! 🌊🌊🌊 (1/4)

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Finally Nya's season! Our queen, our water goddess, our amazing girl gets what she deserves! 😍😍😍

What I know about the season beforehand is that Nya's powers apparently are getting problematic for some reasons? Which is a pretty common topic in other shows but it's a first in Ninjago, usually the elemental powers don't have focus and I LOVE that we now get to see stuff like that 💕💕💕

I know there should be Wojira involved, trusting The Island to deliver that little foreshadowing at the end of the episode 🤷‍♀️ Also Maya is back... MAYA IS FINALLY BACK AFTER SEVEN SEASONS YES!!! 😭😭😭

I have nothing else to say, I have no idea what this will bring, hopefully something as good as Master of the Mountain! 🖤

Warning reader, I might be fangirling to an extreme because I love mah girl Nya and I've been wanting Kai and Nya's parents to be back ever since Hands of Time ended. So yeah... screaming alert 😅

Plasma au idea: au where the smith siblings are famous for being the crush ng bayan in like the 11 grade until mysterious new transfer student's jay walker comes in and steals the popularity cause of the ✨foreign charm✨ and kai gets annoyed because he likes the attention from the girls so he stupidly decides to tell him to back off during class break but it backfires and kai ends up embarrassed from the ordeal cause he wanted to look macho but just ended up looking like a dumbass cause he cussed out at him in filo and cause Jay's new, even if he knows a little bit—he's still relative trash at filipino, so be doesn't even understand half of what kai said

anyway a few days later jay tries to become friends with him and it doesn't end well cause kai is way too arrogant. Jay's hurt and Nya is just tired of her bros dumbassery and tells him to make up with him which kai eventually does and they become (sorta) friends!!!

eventually the school year ends and this is where stuff really starts kicking in— anyway somehow (cough, kais other friends leaving for family cough) jay is really the only other friend that he can probably talk to (yes facebook is a thing but i hc that kai doesn't like using it cause its overwhelming and also because he's dry when it comes to talking online) so they end up hanging out sometimes (including nya becuase same prospect and also likes annoying her bro) and stuff happens and they become good friends (with their main activities together being casual chatting then it slowly progresses to jay forcing them to play games other than ml (if you know you know) and also with kai n nya teaching him the basics of basketball because mans is surprisingly active even if he's a bit pathetic in the physical aspect (also yes both kai and nya play basketball they got it from their dad) and that's kais main stress relief—oh also at one point jay introduces cole, his best friend he met during an online game, and zane, childhood friend that moved away when he was younger but got in touch with again a few years later (minor thing but he's also dating pixal) and they get along really well surprisingly

anyway stuff happens and jaya happens post summer and their 12th grade begins with crush ng bayan #1 (nya) having a bf with mixed reactions (some were sad cause crush on nya, though most were probably like, fangirling cause that happens a lot), and goes on normally for a little bit until it doesn't cause whoops something small happened and kai has a certified Fruity™ moment and then from there developes a crush which sucks ass for 2 reasons

1. He literally has a crush on his sister's bf

2. It's painfully obvious when he likes someone so there are going to be rumors and hoo boy, that does not help

(probably while on break jay casually mentions his crush and from there he sets them up—guess that backfired in his face)

Ninjago / Avatar au Part 5

On to Book two! (I have more concrete ideas on this than Book 1, so I might have to put Book two things on more than one post)

Team Avatar is looking for an earthbending teacher for Lloyd. Wu and Morro are on the run in the Earth Kingdom. And Harumi is on the hunt, but she’s gonna need some help...

Enter Skylor, the laconic, acrobatic, chi-blocking daughter of a Fire Nation high-up, and Akita, the borderline feral knife-wielding niece of Vex, the warden of the Boiling Rock, who ran off to join a circus. Harumi ‘recruits’ the two girls, who she had ‘befriended’ years ago when she was first brought to the Firelords palace, to help her track down the Avatar. They were also sort of friends with Morro when they were kids too (there will be no ships between these four. They might be shipped with other people, but not with each other.) Also, Akita is a little younger than the other three, but won her right to hang with the ‘big kids’ by being able to pin a fly to the wall with a toothpick at thirty feet when she was 8 and the others were 10-11.

Wu and Morro are working their way to Ba Sing Se, under the guise of being refugees. There are shenanigans. (Wu 100% makes tea out of the poison bush thing. Morro almost broke his neck rolling his eyes at that) There are stupid fake names. There is bonding. They don’t end up splitting up like Zuko and Iroh do, but they do get unintentionaly separated at one point (more on that later).

Also, Kai’s acting a tad more overprotective than normal bc of what happened with Zane. And he’s acting that way toward everyone, including Maya and Garm. That will be addressed later.

Team Avatar is heading to the city of Omashu to try and find an earthbender they had meet there before, a guy who was actually a friend of Koko’s from her travels before she settled down in the South Pole. I have no idea who this character will be yet and am open to suggestions (mb one of the Serpentine Generals? Or one of the Elemental Masters? They’re some of the side characters I like, so they might work but idk). They stop briefly at an Earth Kingdom base, where they meet one General Kozu, who has the brilliant idea to try and weaponize a thirteen-year-old boy.

This does not go well. Garm, Maya, and Nya are staunchly against this, Kai thinks if they had a sure-fire way to get it to work without hurting Lloyd they should go for it, but if he thinks Lloyd is in danger he will step in, and Lloyd is scared, but thinks that if they can get this Avatar State plan to work and end the war now, long before the comet arrives, then it’s worth the risk. Kozu does the thing where he makes it look like he’s trapped Garm underground to suffocate (what happened to Katara)(also, there will be no ships between Lloyd and any of the ninja or Morro). Kozu gets his butt whooped and his base trashed.

And now we get to the next ninja to join the plot! In a second. Maya, Nya, and Lloyd are practicing waterbending, Garm and Kai had been doing a little firebending practice but had started chilling. And then they meet the nomad musician stoners, who are a few of the Elemental Masters. Jacob (Sound) is definitely one of them, a couple I haven’t decided on, and Jay! Jay’s a nonbender (I couldn’t for the life of me come up with a way to make him a firebender so he can use lightning) and an inventor who is following these weird flower hippies around bc they said they could get him to a city where he could try and sell his inventions. That was months ago. He has not seen a city. He has not been able to properly bathe. He is regretting several life choices.

Jay is instantly enamored with Nya (sorry if you hardcore ship Jaya, but that ship aint gonna happen here. I don’t like, hate the ship, but it’s really not my favorite), the strong waterbender who was instantly intrigued by his inventions (I think a character in Legend of Korra has some kind of lightning glove thing. One of Jays inventions is something like that) and was able to understand and keep up with his technobabble. He thinks he’s found his dream girl, and an excuse to get away from the smelly flower people! Jay begs Team Avatar if he can come with them. They say yes.

They can’t make it over the mountain, so they have their adventure in the Cave of Two Lovers. They get separated into three groups, Ultra, Garm and Maya, Kai and the musicians, and Jay and Nya. Jay keeps trying to awkwardly flirt with Nya, who actually doesn’t realize that he’s flirting bc she’s worried about her family and focused on getting out of the caves. They find the crystal path thing when their last torch either burns out or gets dropped and snuffed out. Kai and the hippies befriend the badgermoles. Garm and Maya, who were thoroughly done with this whole lovers cave adventure, used their bending and Ultras help to brute-force their way out (the badgermoles fix the cave later).

They get to Omashu, but it’s been taken over by the Fire Nation and the earthbender they were there to find was taken captive by the Fire Nation and sent to an earthbender prison. They have their first run-in with Harumi, Skylor, and Akita.

They have their little swamp adventure, they have some not-fun visions. Garm sees his dad (which scares the crap out of him), Maya sees her dead mother, Kai sees Zane, idk who Nya sees (mb Ray I guess? She misses him but he isn’t like, dead or anything so it might work?), or who Jay sees either (his birth parents I guess? That could be part of a character arc) and Lloyd gets a vision of his earthbending teacher. Y’all can probably guess who it’s gonna be, but I don’t wanna spoil it right now. And you know that one swampbender who bent the water in the vines to make a big plant monster? That’s Bolobo, the EM of Nature.

That Avatar Day adventure happens. Lloyd tries out that free lesson at the earthbending school, and they go to Earth Rumble 6. Kai gets way too invested in this underground fight club. Karloff is The Boulder, nuff said. And the reigning champion, whose stage name I haven’t decided on is Cole. Now, here’s the thing: I don’t want to make Cole blind just bc Toph was, but I do love the whole ‘listening to the earth’s vibrations to become a powerful earthbending master’ thing. So here’s Coles deal. His father is a rich and famous performer, and his mother was killed in an accident (possibly Fire Nation related, possibly not) that lead to Cole losing his legs (below the knees). He was just learning how to earthbend when it happened.

Something I’ve noticed in A:TLA is that earthbenders seem to use their legs and feet much more than other benders, with strong stances and stomping moves to connect to the earth. So to an earthbender losing their legs, losing their way to connect to the earth, would probably be one hell of an obstacle to work around. Cole’s father used his wealth to get Cole some nice prosthetics (Sparky Sparky Boom Man had two prosthetics, so I know they exist in the avatar world. Coles aren’t intimidating metal ones with some kind of mechanism to move like a real foot) but they don’t allow him to feel the earth like he needs to. So he painstakingly makes himself some new prosthetics. It looks like he’s just got bulky boots made out of stone, but Cole spent years working to be able to feel the earth’s vibrations through these prosthetics, to the point that he could be blindfolded and still be able to ‘see’ and earthbend fairly well. He can even get them to move like their his real limbs a little bit.

He can’t move with as much speed and agility, but he makes up for that by being a freaking powerhouse. But Cole can’t wear his earth prosthetics for super long periods of time bc he had no idea how to actually make them comfortable and make it so they don’t damage his stumps after long periods (after he joins Team Avatar Jay and Nya help him combine his professionally made prosthetics with his earthbending ones so he can wear them full time). Lou had become very protective of Cole after the accident, which is why Cole started participating in Earth Rumble 6.

Things go similarly to cannon, Cole shows his dad how powerful he is as an earthbender, and while Lou does ban Cole from going with Team Avatar at first, he actually does change his mind and let Cole go with them. He even sees them off. It’s a sweet moment.

So what have Wu and Morro been doing? Traveling, dealing with the occasional rude fellow traveler, and getting seperated in a storm turned flash flood. Team Avatar also get split up in this storm turned flash flood, Garm, Cole, and Jay get separated from everyone, including each other. This leads to Maya, Kai, Nya and Lloyd flying Ultra around in a small area to search for them, and makes it really easy for a tank occupied by three dangerous girls to track them for a good two days, leading to some mild sleep deprivation. (Dragons don’t shed fur, so that’s my fix for that bc I really like “The Chase” and wanted to include it)

Morro was looking for Wu, but finds Harumi and starts following her (he’s hoping that she might lead him to Wu, or that Wu might start following Harumi and they’ll run into each other, or smthn. And if he’s able to catch the Avatar there’s a chance that he and Wu will be forgiven by the Firelord. He’s not banking on it, but it might work). Jay and Cole find each other, and then run into Wu, who was looking for Morro. Maya and the kids split up to cover more ground and to try and to try and lose the tank and the girls. Lloyd goes one way, Kai and Nya go in another, and Maya takes Ultra to find a place for him to nap.

Harumi follows Lloyd’s trail, and Skylor and Akita go after Kai and Nya. Meanwhile, Cole and Jay have some tea and conversation with Wu. No idea what the conversation is about, but it gets cut short when Garm finds them and tells Jay and Cole to get away from Wu. There’s a bit of a stand-off, since Garm doesn’t trust Wu and hasn’t read his letter yet, and Wu is getting a little frustrated at his brothers stubbornness, (and is wondering how he keeps collecting children) even though he does understand why Garm would be cautious around him.

They work together to find a trail, have some awkward small talk, the brothers start to reconnect a little bit, meet up with Kai and Nya (who fought off Skylor and Akita), and they all go after Lloyd and Harumi. They find them in a three-way fight with Harumi, and Morro is going all out with his airbending for the first time in his life. Everyone gangs up on Harumi and corner her, and when she notices Garm is a bit distracted trying to subtly check on Lloyd, she tries to fire an attack at him-

-only for Wu to push him out of the way and take the hit. Wu goes down, hard, and everyone attacks Harumi, but she gets away. Morro blows Garm away away when he tries to get to Wu, calling Wu his father for the first time, and he kicks up a wind storm to keep them away. Maya shows up on Ultra, who got enough of a nap to fly for a few hours and let everyone get some much needed rest. Everyone that is, except Garm, who finally sits down to read his brothers letter...

I need to actually stick to what I say for once.

I was going to do S2 on Monday, but then I got the realisation that after watching NS12, I was already running out of things to do. So, I did it tonight, and it’s...certainly an eclectic collection of thoughts. Hmph.

-The biggest point I have, and one I think really damages the season, is the pacing. You can tell the writers were aware that Ninjago was going to be cancelled (indeed, it was actually cancelled for a year) so they jammed two seasons’ story into one season. As a result, the last...say, five episodes are pretty strong since it seems the story beats were fairly set in stone (heh), but it takes over half the season to get there and before that you have some pretty meh writing. I know they didn’t exactly have full control over that, so bear in mind I am aware of this and assume I’m giving some leeway for it where appropriate, although I will still criticise it. -Lloyd Montgomery "For Fucks Sake Stop Grounding Me" Garmadon is the best character in this season. However, the fact we spent just seven episodes with young green Ninja Lloyd is a waste of an idea in hindsight. -Skales remains an MVP before he’s written out of the story. -I see now that S2 Garmadon is the basis for Movie Garmadon because he was great, and it was especially hilarious watching him bounce off his boring pilot self. -Wu is still the worst character. I’m sorry, he was bad enough when he was being too harsh on four teens, Lloyd is one kid and Wu is already like “I’m shoving the weight of the world on your shoulders”. Fuck you Wu. -The non-elemental parents do no get enough due credit. Ed, Edna and Lou are all great in their own way, and Doctor Julien is a badass considering he’s on death’s door. -And yes, this does mean I like S2 Misako overall. She’s a victim of the rushed pacing though; her motive for leaving Lloyd at Darkley’s could have been way more smooth if she just had five seconds longer to speak, like “I left him to go and research the prophecy...and make sure the dark forces would not attack him”. You could answer at least three potential hangups with those few extra words. Otherwise, the idea of old regrets is one with potential, and it’s handled pretty well here. I am aware it gets fucked up later, but what else is new. -The bizarro ninja are about as good as early Archie Evil Sonic. Which means they’re terrible. Hopefully they don’t show up again. -Wow, Captain Soto is an early one! I’m glad his contribution to the season actually had serious ramifications. -I like the way the first part of the season built up the new civilian cast, even if most were unnamed. Started to really give life outside the ninja, something season 1 was short of. Also Dareth wasn’t that great at first, but the mini-arc he had warmed me up to him. -Nya...existed. Outside of being turned evil and using Samurai X once this was not her season. Kai used Samurai X more than her, even! -I don’t know how to vocalise my thoughts on the main four, their treatment was erratic. For the first eight episodes they were honestly pretty weak, basically being shoved into the mentor role and not being given much material beyond that. Jay managed to just about counter that with his obnoxious personality (actually acting as a positive rather than a negative). Zane doesn’t counter it, but because he’s generally like that anyway he adapts well to it. Kai and Cole suffer for it. I know I didn’t like them in S1 due to being abrasive and not my thing at all, but now they’re basically the other extreme; revolving around their mentor role, taking out a lot of the personality. All of this is probably because of said rushed pace so they had to get them as mentors lickety split. Then five episodes from the end the story’s like “Whoops, we left the personality nodes off, let’s just switch them back on” and suddenly all four of them were improved. Zane had his own arc to go through, Jay was electric, and Cole was apparently just unleashing the energy not used in the first half (How did we go from him being so stoic to doing the Moonwalk over Stone Soldiers???). Even Kai got moments back, and it finally genuinely felt like he’d become protective of Lloyd without it being forced in by the plot needs. -Jaya has a bit of a stumble in S2 thanks to Double Trouble (thanks for nothing, Bizarro Ninja), but overall it’s still cute. -Whoever said that the Stone Army isn’t treated with any comedic elements is a filthy liar. Even the Overlord got sassy at one point. -The plot ends up being an overt Star Wars homage and I am okay with this. -I should have mentioned this with the first season but I hope the once-an-episode slow-down bits stop soon. The choreography of the fighting has improved though!

So overall? I honestly have pretty mixed feelings towards this season. In terms of quality it’s more consistent than S1, but at the same I feel it’s brought down more, mainly because of that omnipresent pacing issue. The last five episodes suffer less from it, but that is far too late to be kicking in. Not that the first part is bad, but you can tell they’re skimming content to get to the good stuff. That being said, said good stuff is good.

I want to add a little extra though, because the way it ends only makes me more conscious of how the next few seasons take the story. The story here does feel like an ending point, and that was fine for the time. But hindsight has shown that this was not the case, and there’s definitely some corners that have been written into. So with that, I can at least understand why the Hagemans and Andreason might have thought at the time that creating new drama for all the main characters (that weren’t Lloyd because he needed a rest) was the best way to try and give themselves an out. But man, there are going to be moments where I am gonna legit fume (there’s a moment in S2 that makes the upcoming love triangle so much worse, and I think the bit I’m dreading the most now is actually Kai’s green Ninja drama in S4).

Also poor Lloyd get schtick for hogging the limelight, when it seems in most instances it’s been circumstances that did that. S2 was trying to rush its story so it had to focus on Lloyd to tell it, and S8 was probably LEGO’s way of continuing the film inertia, and it just happened to be an arc that needed three seasons to resolve due to the way it was structured. For once, S11 is the most guilty since that one didn’t need to be Lloyd.

Okay, so next up whenever I decide to do it are Rebooted and Tournament of Elements...oh joy...at least all the seasons are shorter this time.

Homecoming

Aka, SJ finally makes a movie fic.

Have this little 1200 word oneshot that was inspired by my life currently! I’m in a crisis that’s for sure. Anyway, enjoy :3

Totally PG and also there’s Jaya in it as usual so heads up.

Jay put down his phone and buried his face in his hands. He couldn’t believe it; junior year of high school had already sprung upon him like a pouncing leopard. Just yesterday he must have been a bumbling freshman, papers flying, late classes he felt like disappearing away from.

But that was, after all, a good thing… it wasn’t exactly why he was headfirst in a problem... the biggest problem ever in his life.

The phone face down on the bed he was sitting on buzzed. Picking it up, he stared at the notifications.

He sighed. Cole and Lloyd were nice to say the least. But Jay was sure that nobody he was good friends with had any experience with girls besides Kai, and well. He’d be sent to hell by the red ninja himself if Kai ever found out about his “motives.” Zane wasn’t much of an option either, since he had a hard time understanding how to talk to even close friends.

Jay laid down fully clothed on the top of his bed, staring at the ceiling. He reached to his desk and for the hundredth time that day double checked if maybe this time, the paper seemed okay enough to give.

Jay grabbed the paper and read it over again.

“Hey there Nya! It’s me, your cool friend Jay :3 you’re going to the homecoming dance right? Don’t suppose you have a date? If not we should go together! Please give this back with an answer :)”

Jay picked up a pencil from his desk and reluctantly erased together. It made it sound a lot cheesier than he had intended.

He still decided it wasn’t good enough, and smacked it back onto his desk.

He looked at the clock. 10:30 pm often marked the time for a sleep attempt before a school day began. Maybe he could get away from this nightmare for a few hours.

Jay downed the last few sips of his coffee and bolted out the front door. If he didn’t leave now, traffic would envelop him like a swarm of wasps. His backpack bounced on his back as he ran to his bike, his scarf flying in the wind.

“Have a nice day at school honey!” He heard a shout from the door.

“I-I will, Mom!”

He climbed onto his bike at lightning speed. Multiple times in the past he had asked his mom why he wasn’t driven to school or took the bus; every time the answer was “You need your exercise to grow up big and strong!” He thought about the computer sitting on his desk that held a much-procrastinated driving course as he sped out of the driveway and into the fray of the road, helmetless.

Minutes later he pulled his bike into the rack, panting. He was early enough to calm down. Jay wearily like so many repeated times before walked up the steps into the school building, going through the assignments that were due in his head for the fourth time that morning.

The school was in its one-week-before-a-dance state. Naturally, it was full of idiots, chatterboxes, and nervous wrecks that were even more active than during finals. He walked down the halls into his first class.

He looked down one hall and saw a sophomore boy in glasses strumming a guitar and looking up at a brown-haired girl, singing a home-posal. “You’re tall and white and pretty, you’re really really skinny…” he sang.

Yeesh, I don’t even wanna know what’s going on over there, Jay thought.

Classes went by in the slowest fashion ever. He saw a friend in them here and there. Finally, the lunch bell gave its holy ring, and he slung his backpack over his shoulder and drowsily snuck out of class.

He saw Kai and Nya casually hanging out together in a corner, probably waiting to meet up with their other friends. Before he knew it, his body was turning in their direction, going Mission: executed mode.

“Hhey, you guys!” He smiled nervously, beginning to shake a bit. Nya raised a hand and smiled. Kai looked at him with what was probably pity.

Nya was typing away at her phone. Jay wasn’t sure what for.

“So it’s just wild that we’re juniors now, huh?” What am I doing?!

Kai nodded. Nya looked up. “Yeah, that’s so crazy! It doesn’t feel like it at all.”

Her eyes gave him a warm welcome before darting back to her phone again. It made him shake a little more.

“Yeah, and th-the dance is coming up and all and…. I dunno… we’re so old now, I think yknow, it’s time for me at least to make the most of it. I-I kinda want a date, haha! Just because we’re older and all and I don’t wanna waste the dances. And all.”

Nya stayed in silence, an uninterpretable silence.

Uh oh. ABORT MISSION. ABORT.

Kai looked up at Jay with a look that definitely spelled disappointment. “Like the homecoming dance?”

Jay stared down at his own feet. “Uh, yeah.”

That’s it, I’m outta here.

“I’ve got a teacher I have to practice work with,” he lied. He waved goodbye and walked away a little too quickly.

Not saying he hid in the bathroom for the rest of lunch, but he totally hid in the bathroom for the rest of lunch.

The rest of the day was even slower, and as Jay finally slid off his bike like jelly and unlocked the front door to his house, he was mumbling to himself, “Yeah, that’s it, I give up, not like she even would say yes anyway, it’s better to just leave the situation alone.”

The door creaked open and Jay was suddenly looking into the faces of four disappointed teenagers. Even Zane was peeking out the doorway with an obviously sad face. Jay looked up and was staring into the eyes of the tiger on the face of the lion. Kai.

Run.

Jay whipped around and started bolting across the street without giving a second thought to look for cars, but a robotic arm extended and grabbed him by the back of his shirt. It pulled him in swiftly, and the door slammed behind him. Jay was released and fell flat on the floor, his keys sliding across the wood.

He sat up, rubbing his head and staring again at Kai. “...It’s not what it looks like?”

“It’s exactly what it looks like,” Kai sighed, his palm on his forehead.

Zane smiled and took up a chipper voice. “Dude. That was just sad!”

“The face doesn’t really help, Zane,” Jay said.

Cole and Lloyd looked at each other somewhat guiltily. “It’s ok Jay!” Lloyd smiled reassuringly. “Plus it wasn’t even my idea so haha don’t be mad at me! Ow!”

Cole had smacked him on the back, signifying he should get silent.

“You have a lot to learn about my sister,” Kai looked at Jay. He reached out a hand to the blue lump on the floor and smiled.

Sometimes I wonder if people think I prefer bruiseshipping over Jaya just because it’s gay. Now, I’m going to ignore that it would be nice to get some gay rep lol, and say that, no, it’s NOT because it’s gay.

Jay x Nya:

Was love at first sight which is always a poor writing choice- not EVEN love at first sight tho- love at first MENTION. Jay just hears that a girl exists and decides he should date her without even knowing anything about her.

I could excuse that because they managed to make the ship cute in like season one. However it does create the problem of “they didn’t really have any time to truly develop a good relationship”. Jumping into dating someone like that is kind of risky.

Especially since Nya cheated on Jay. Yeah. She straight up just cheated on him for Cole, and told Cole not to tell Jay. Straight up. Nya must’ve not seen her relationship with Jay as a very deep one, which yeah, it wasn’t. Still doesn’t excuse her actions.

She never freakin apologized for cheating. Like, yeah no, it wasn’t MY fault I cheated on you Jay, Cole is the only one at fault here even tho I initiated it!!! I honestly feel like it’s messed up that, it totally seems in character for Jay to not expect Nya to apologize. Like, he deserves an apology girl. Don’t wait for him to ask for one. Also, she’s waited so long to apologize, I’m not even sure how I would feel if she DID this long after she cheated. It would have to be a real dang good apology.

Overall just not a very well developed relationship, season 6 was trying to fix that but honestly I don’t think it cut it, it mixed in Nya’s weird girl thing in a way that made the whole thing seem forced. Their relationship is just....... very forced.

Meanwhile, Jay x Cole:

Yes, Cole did date Jay’s girl. That’s pretty messed up. The difference? Aside from the fact that Nya started it, COLE ACTUALLY APOLOGIZED. It was a pretty good apology too. They became much closer after that.

Cole and Jay’s relationship has gotten the MOST development out of like... literally any other relationship tbh. Platonic ones included (seeing as bruiseshipping isn’t canonically romantic especially lol)

Cole and Jay have a lot more cute little interactions than Jay and Nya, which I find especially weird since the writers can literally choose what happens, yet they always make Jay gravitate towards Cole rather than Nya. Like, I wouldn’t find this strange if Jay and Nya’s relationship wasn’t so... fragile, and filled with Jay obsessing over Nya. But in any case, Jay always seems to stick closer to Cole than to Nya, and seriously, they have more little cute moments than Jay and Nya..

If Jay x Cole WAS canon, it would be like the first ship where one of the characters ISN’T introduced by either being flirted with, flirting with someone, or getting stared at with those romantic weird slow motion scenes where they just look at someone. That would be pretty good, a relationship with actual development and none of that love at first sight garbage lol

Y’all can say what y’all want about the ninja all just being bros, and tbh, I agree, EXCEPT Jay and Cole, their relationship is way different from the others... best friends, I hear you say, well that’s just what the writers WANT you to think because they’re really trying to enforce Jay x Nya without thinking about how much they’ve already screwed it up.

So yeah that’s why I prefer bruise. No hate to Jaya shippers, I honestly feel bad for them, the writers keep ruining the ship, honestly y’all keep going with trying to salvage the ship and take what’s good from it, shame on the writers

Oh, I just remembered, seasons 10-11 are out aren’t they, I haven’t watched those yet- please no spoilers, I sort of doubt they can save Jaya this late into the show and I don’t think they’re trying cuz they seem to think it’s a perfect relationship but, whatever, don’t blame me for not mentioning stuff in those seasons lol
