An Off Day (Nathan Bateman x Reader)

AN OFF DAY

(okay, look. my husband thought he was being funny and said “give me a character and i’ll give you a scenario” and then i snorted laughing and then...well. this happened. set sometime before the events of the movie.)

Word Count: 2100(ish)

Summary: It’s your day off and you’re just trying to enjoy it. Nathan is working and he’s trying to enjoy it. It doesn’t at all go the way you imagined.

Warnings: Cursing. Banter. Robot sex (not graphic). Personal injury. Innuendo. Propositions. Nudity. Complete and utterly ridiculous trash. Possible typos. Nathan Bateman.

The absolute magnificence of the Alaskan landscape was something that, quite frankly, you were never going to get used to. The trees, tall and majestic, towering over the lush green grass. The river, crisp and pristine, bubbling its way to the immense waterfall that cascaded down the cliff face and eventually made its way into the ever-vast ocean. The bald eagles that would soar from treetop to treetop, even the occasional moose that would make itself known at the edges of the compound and then disappear like ghosts into the forest beyond.

It was otherworldly.

The occasional twig snapped and leaf crunched under your boots as you hiked along your usual trail along the north side of the property. Today’s air felt cool on your cheeks despite the sun overhead; at least it was summer - technically, even if the temperature wasn’t getting much above 60 degrees Fahrenheit these past few weeks - so you had twenty hours of daylight instead of the twenty hours of darkness in winter.

You found your favorite spot on a nearby rock and perched on the smooth surface, tilting your face up to that glorious, shining orb. This really was what you needed right now.

*ding!*

...And that was really what you didn’t need. Definitely not right now, and probably not later either. Speaking of otherworldly.

Your boss was a difficult man, and you had a strange rapport with him that was irritating on a daily professional basis, and to your dismay, increasingly so on a personal level. To be fair, you were the only two humans out here. To also be fair, your boss was kind of annoyingly hot.

You sighed and reached into your pocket, pulling out your phone and glancing at the screen.

God: Where the fuck are you?

God? What the… You were annoyed by the text, but more annoyed by the name. When the hell did that bastard changed his name in your phone? He was insufferable on the best of days, but this was a new low. A new high? You weren’t really sure. Sighing, you shot a text back.

You: It’s my day off.

God: You know that’s not really a thing here right?

You: It is when I need a break from you.

God: I’ll make it up to you.

You: Unless you’re asking me to dinner, I don’t want to hear it.

You groaned. You really didn’t mean to say that.

The little ellipses that showed he was typing back flashed across the screen several times, then stopped. Then popped back up, and stopped again. And just because your boss was your boss, it did it four more times, but still no response.

You shoved your phone back in your jacket pocket and returned your attention to the river, breathing deeply and watching the water swirl around a pile of rocks on the opposite bank.

*ding!*

Dammit.

God: I need you to come back like right now.

You: I’m not gonna sit around and be your Eliza Doolittle today, Nathan.

You weren’t just saying that. Last week, the man had dragged you, literally, into the lab by your elbow and had you repeat vowel sounds and random words extremely phonetically while holding a pulsing orb of glowing blue goo. He claimed it was some kind of brain training. You’d said it wasn’t part of your job description, but honestly, it probably was. You were there to assist, you were there to manage, you were there to occasionally have a satisfyingly intelligent and non-arrogant conversation, and you were mostly there to make sure Nathan Bateman didn’t blow anything up or burn anything down.

That didn’t necessarily mean you liked any of it. Okay, fine, you kind of liked the assisting part and definitely the intelligent conversation part. But it was your day off, and all you wanted to do was not be in the house.

God: What? No, it’s...I just need your help with something.

You: Nathan. It. Is. My. Day. Off. No assistance today. Bother me tomorrow.

God: ...Please?

That gave you pause. Since when did he actually ask for anything politely?

You: Fine. I’m halfway up summit trail, give me like 20.

God: Make it 10.

You: Asshole.

God: And bring a bag of frozen peas.

What the actual hell.

You blinked at the screen twice, turned your phone off completely, and started back towards the house.

You didn’t know why you paid the slightest bit of attention to Nathan’s request, but once in the house, you found yourself in the kitchen, pulling a bag of frosty legumes out of the freezer. With it in hand, you made your way to the lab.

Nathan hadn’t told you where he was, but you knew where to find him. He was always in the lab.

“Okay, I’m back,” you called out as you pushed through the door to Nathan’s inner sanctum. “Now what is so damn important that…”

“Oh thank fuck,” Nathan’s voice called out. “Do you have the stuff?”

You glanced around suspiciously. You couldn’t see him. Until you came around the side of the long table in the middle of the room and found him. Your eyes widened at the sight of Nathan, curled up on the floor in a fetal position, sweating and vaguely shaking.

And totally naked.

He glanced up as he saw your shoes approached and weakly raised his arm and made a grabby hand. “Gimme.”

Tossing the frozen vegetables to him, your mouth opened and closed several times, trying to process the scene. Before you could really take it all in, you watched as Nathan reached over his shoulder, grabbed his discarded t-shirt, and wrapping the icy bag in the shirt, placed it directly on his crotch.

“All right,” you finally got out, “what the actual hell is going on?!”

“Ohhhhh,” Nathan moaned as the cold compress made contact with his skin. “I thought I was gonna die.”

“Why are you naked?” you yelled at him.

“There was a malfunction,” he replied, nonchalant as if you were simply discussing the weather.

You just gaped at him. This was definitely not in your job description.

“A malfunction,” you repeated.

Nathan made a feeble gesture at the table. It was covered in metal parts and wires, screwdrivers and other things you assumed were robotic but couldn’t recognize. He had been working a new body build for the past few days, that much you knew. But now there were metal bits everywhere and Nathan was bare as the day he was born, sprawled in the middle of the floor. Your eyes scanned the table again; the biggest object, in the middle of the mess, looked sort of like...oh, you did not like where this was going. You pinched the bridge of your nose.

“I may have miscalculated the required tension,” Nathan said, still curled up on the floor.

The required...oh hell no.

“Nathan...you know you’re the literally the smartest person I know, and you know I think you’re brilliantly creative and inventive and all that important stuff, but please, please tell me you were not actually doing what I think you were doing,” you muttered.

“I was working!”

“You know I can just check the security footage, right?” you stared him down.

Nathan looked at you over the top of his glasses. “I had to test it and make sure it worked.”

You buried your face in your hands.

“Why does a robot have to have working...parts?!” As soon as you asked, you wished you hadn’t. This idiot genius actually had the nerve to blush. Slightly. He would never admit it, but his ears definitely got pinker than they’d been a few seconds ago.

Nathan sat up suddenly and glared at you, adjusting the ice pack again - thank the heavens - to keep himself covered. “First of all, it’s not a robot, it’s an AI. There’s a big difference. And second of all, we talked about this. The point is to make it as human as possible, so this particular part was necessary.”

The glare you shot back at him could have melted his current loincloth. It was your day off and Nathan couldn’t even leave you be for one whole day without his compulsion to cater to whatever whim was in his head and get under your skin. You dropped into one of the lab chairs.

“So...let me get this straight,” you sighed. God help you. But not the God in your cell phone, because he could go fuck himself. Or get fucked. Whichever.

Suddenly, through your haze of utter exasperation, what you’d just thought clicked into place and you snorted a laugh. Your eyes flashed over to the thing in the middle of the table. It was definitely shaped like a pelvis.

Nathan’s eyes became daggers. “What’s so fuckin’ funny?”

Your eyes went to the thing on the table and to his hands, and then back again. You shook your head, cleared your throat, and tried not to laugh again. It didn’t work. “Sorry. Um. So...what you’re saying is...you got injured because you were...fucking a robot pelvis.”

“I should fire you,” Nathan grumbled.

“And you got injured - from fucking a disembodied robot pelvis -”

“I am so going to fire you.”

“...because it was too...tight?”

“I shouldn’t have asked for your help. I should have just let myself die here, naked and unsatisfied.” He flopped back down.

You couldn’t help yourself any longer. Your laughter rang through the lab, a mixture of actual amusement and horrified reality. You snorted again and that made you laugh harder. Nathan had always joked about making a sex robot. Well, you thought he had been joking, but now, clearly not - and he’d hurt himself in the actual process of trying to make sure it worked. You weren’t a monster, you hoped he wasn’t truly actually injured, but you also took a little satisfaction in knowing karma existed.

After a few minutes, you wiped your eyes and looked down at him. Nathan stared back, but you could see the start of a sheepish smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“I told you I miscalculated the tension. It was fine--”

“Until it wasn’t?” you wheezed.

“--until it cut off all the circulation to my dick.”

You bit your lip. “Nathan Bateman. You literally cockblocked yourself.”

He didn’t respond right away. But then he spoke, at the same moment you noticed the smirk on his face fully bloom and what you’d come to call his “up to some bullshit” look glimmer in his eyes.

“Are you gonna come help me or not?”

“Excuse me?” You were fairly certain your eyebrows could not go any farther up your forehead.

“Well, I’m not in excruciating, unimaginable pain now, and I’d like to make sure my dick isn’t going to fall off. And I didn’t finish. Need a little help here.”

“You want me to--” you stuttered.

“Un-cockblock me,” his wolfish smile broke out fully now.

You hurled a pen at his head. “You really are an asshole.”

“I admit,” he continued, easily dodging your projectile, “this wasn’t what I was expecting for the first time you saw me naked, but I’ll work with what I got.” He started to remove the ice pack.

Another pen went flying his way. “You know, I’m just going to pretend that you’re not about to flash me with your mechanically impaired penis, and that you didn’t just proposition me, and I’m leaving this room now,” you said, standing up and shaking your head.

“Baby, you’re just gonna leave me hanging here?” he grinned, stretching back out on the floor. He folded his hands behind his head. The t-shirt wrapped bag of frozen peas remained - now perched rather proudly, you noted - on his groin.

A vexed growl left your lips as you walked towards the lab door. “Leaving now!”

“Well could you at least toss me my pants?”

You glanced down. Nathan’s sweatpants were balled up behind the lab door. How they’d gotten all the way over here...nope. Nope. You decided that information was entirely unnecessary.

You threw his pants at him and they hit him in the face with a satisfying whump.

“You sure I can’t convince you to help me out here?” Nathan asked serenely from under the fabric.

He couldn’t see the small smile on your face as you walked out the door. Thank god. Or...God. Whatever. The man was a menace.

“Ask me to dinner,” you called over your shoulder.

“I’ll text you,” he called back.

God.

SPN has so much spinoff potential and so much canon to work with, it's such a waste that none of it's getting used. This post is just all of my spinoff ideas, I'll apologize in advance because it is VERY long.

Wayward Sisters, obviously. There are so many possible storylines to work with, so many stories to tell. I'd really love to see some Charlie, Eileen, or Krissy Chambers cameos. I think that Charlie and Claire would get along really well (just read this post). Rowena is another character that I think could easily be worked into the canon. She could teach the girls all kinds of magic and be the fun wine aunt that spoils the girls on their birthdays. I don't think that Claire would like her very much, but, Rowena and Alex would probably get along just fine. How much I need this in my life: 1000000000000000000000000/10 when I heard that this idea had been tossed out I was so angry. Why doesn't this exist?

Men of Letters prequel that's mostly set in the bunker. This show could really expand on the canon lore and give us some more background on the Men of Letters, as well as any other similar/rival organizations that were around before the main show's time. The Men of Letters have so much story potential for a spin-off; corrupt leadership, new monsters, other organizations, expanding the MoL to outside the U.S. Episodes could be in a monster-of-the-week (MOTW) format, starting and ending with the Man of Letters the case is assigned to making notes in his journal or case file or talking about the case, as well as the overall season arcs. Episodes would be titled by their case number, i.e S1 E1 Case No. 1925-4, etc How much I need this in my life: 1000000/10, the supernatural/historical drama combo would be absolutely stunning.

A series focusing on all of the alternate timelines and universes, both the ones mentioned in the main show and ones just randomly created for an episode. There are infinite possibilities. Each episode would be in a MOTW format, but with different versions of Sam and Dean. The HunterCorp universe, Jared and Jensen from the French Mistake, a universe where their names are switched, a universe where Dean went to college and was the one with the demon blood powers, a universe where they drive a Mustang instead of the Impala, a universe where Sam isn't scared of clowns. I could go on, but I'm going to stop myself here. How much I need this in my life: 9/10 I think it would be pretty funny, but it's not my best idea.

A Bobby and Rufus spin-off where they talk about cases they worked on together or with other hunters, but the stories are told similarly to Tall Tales. It's the same story but told from different points of view depending on who's talking. I wish we'd gotten to see more of Bobby and Rufus because I think those two are hilarious and really think that this could be funny, even if it was just a web series with twenty-minute episodes. How much I need this in my life: 10/10, I love Bobby and Rufus and I think that they have a lot of interesting hunting stories to tell.

GHOSTFACERS GHOSTFACERS GHOSTFACERS. How much I need this in my life: 100000000000000000000000/10, I love the Ghostfacers. That's my whole idea.

A Jack-centric show that's almost a political drama. Jack is the ruler of heaven and is constantly being manipulated by angels, demons, and Death herself. He just wants to make an afterlife paradise, but power-hungry angels won't leave him alone. Remember that Jack is very young and trusting by nature, so there is a lot of potential for disaster if he gets goaded into doing something, like making new universes or ending existing ones. Cas is a main character and he does his best to protect Jack, but he has to be careful to not seem overprotective/like another manipulator or Jack won't trust him either. I have no idea if I'm making any sense, but shoutout to me if I am. For some reason, I've always thought that heaven would be an interesting setting for a spin-off, and those angels are pretty similar to power-hungry politicians. How much I need this in my life: 800/10, I would totally watch this.

A very short series that just destroys the canon finale. Twelve episodes, detailing the storylines that were ignored or destroyed by Carry On. E1: Rescuing Cas from the Empty and he and Dean have a long talk about their ~feelings~. They kiss, and for the first time, Dean’s mind is free of doubt about whether or not anyone could ever love all of him. E2: Eileen returns. She says nothing when she sees Dean and Cas holding hands, just raises her eyebrow and smiles knowingly. Some excellent movie night content. E3: 1 year later. Sam and Eileen’s wedding. Dean and Cas aren’t legally married, but their matching gold rings are very prominently shown. It isn’t mentioned. The wedding is almost canceled because of the rain, but with a wave of Jack’s hand the clouds disappear and the birds start to sing. E4: Sam and Eileen have moved out of the Bunker. Cas finally convinces Dean to downsize, so they find a little house in Lawrence and settle down. Cas works as a special ed teacher. Dean works as a mechanic. Miracle loves the backyard but makes sure to stay away from the beehives in the back corner. E5: Sam and Eileen’s twins, Mary and Maura, are born. Dean and Cas love their nieces, and Jack loves them too. He doesn’t know what to call himself, so they settle on Uncle and call it good. E6: Deaths. They all die old. Cas’s vessel has aged, but he can’t die, so when Dean finally passes away in his sleep, Cas scatters his ashes in the woods and disappears, ascending to heaven, to spend eternity with Dean. The closing scene is a dark screen, with the whoosh of wings and a soft “Hello, Dean.” OK. That was a long one. My apologies. How much I need this in my life: 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10. I would reach nerdvana thirty seconds into episode one.

Another spinoff of that idea is just...Dean and Cas living a normal life. Short episodes. Cas goes to the grocery store. Dean drags Cas to a horror movie fan convention. Cas meets a roomba. How much I need this in my life: I can’t type enough zeroes to express it.

Campbell prequel that focuses on Mary and her childhood. Mary being raised as a hunter but not being allowed on hunts. Mary rushing home to finish her chemistry homework so she can help her dad track a nest of vampires moving east. Mary missing her prom to help Samuel on a hunt. Mary trying to keep her real life secret from John, a man she knows loves the parts of her he knows about. Mary always being an outsider, the kindest and most beautiful girl in her class, but so slow to trust and quick to speak that everyone is afraid to be her friend. Mary is a character that has the potential a lot more development, for twelve seasons she’s the burning martyr in every Winchester’s imagined paradise. She deserves more. How much I need this in my life: 11/10, Mary isn’t my favorite character but I would die for her.

Gabriel spin-off. That’s it, that’s the idea. How much I need this in my life: 10000000/10, Gabriel is a character that we don’t know a lot about so there are so many possible directions for a story about him to go.

Show set in the SPN universe that doesn’t really interact with the main show’s canon. It’s about two cops in the 30s that become hunters by accident. After investigating the apparent suicide of a hunter in their small town, they become enthralled by her library, filled with books about ghosts and vampires. They pour over her journals on their own time, fascinated by what they’re reading. They get to know the hunter through her writings, her accounts of her hunts and travels. Eventually, a nest of vampires settles in the town and the two put their newfound knowledge to the test. This show would just be based on canon lore, there wouldn’t be any mention of the Winchesters or other main characters, although a few MoL team-ups is definitely a possibility. The two become quite a team, tracking werewolf backs on bulletin boards in their basements and hoarding rock salt. How much I need this in my life: 89/10, I think this could be really interesting and I am a sucker for historical hunters.

Speaking of historical hunters-Samuel Colt prequel. Cowboys, vampires, cowpires. Hunting in the wild west, galloping across the prairie chasing a pack of werewolves. This show could also tell us a lot about how different types of monsters spread across the U.S. Ghosts will go anywhere people go, but what about vampires? Shapeshifters? Ghouls? What was it like to hunt without technology to help with research? The hunters in this series would be the authors of the journals that modern hunters use every day. They’re the ones that tested tracking and trapping methods. Again, no idea if this is making sense, but I think that a supernatural western would be really awesome and would expand/substantiate the canon lore. How much I need this in my life: 1000000000000000000000000000000/10, I love cowboys and I love Supernatural. This is literally the best thing that could ever happen to me.

Crowley. I want to know more about him. A series that tells us all about Fergus Roderick MacLeod, starting with when he was born in Scotland and ending with his death in All Along the Watchtower. We know that Rowena was his mother, that he was a tailor, that he sold his soul for an extra three inches ~down there~, and that he was a terrible dad. I want to know more about his childhood, about the people he made deals with, about how he became king of the crossroads and of Hell. Crowley was a very interesting character that was abused by the story. I want to know more about him. How much I need this in my life: 10000000000000000000000000000000000000/10, I really do love Crowley and I would watch this a thousand times over.

Final idea: MOTW only. No season arc, no overall storyline. New hunters every episode, from all different times, from over the world. All kinds of monsters. One episode in Victorian England, the next in 1990s Los Angeles. Very few recurring characters, if any. The recurring characters would be the Bobby Singers of the world; the lore guys that you call when you need help. Each new character has their own style, own car, own music, own personality. The show could have some a m a z i n g guest stars because they’d only appear in a few episodes. There are so many possibilities for episodes, even if they weren’t full length. How much I need this in my life: 100000/10, I love MOTW episodes and would really like to get to know the characters. It would be very easy to write one-off fanfics for this show, and also very easy to introduce this show’s characters into Supernatural’s canon.

You made it to the end!!!!!!!! That’s all I have for now. Sorry for writing so much, I just can’t stop thinking about SPN and all of the wasted stories.

Hey-ho, it’s Moonglow - the latest (and some may say greatest) in the catalogue of charisma that is Avantasia.

Storyline: Cast into a world of light, a lonely Homunculus tries to understand love and beauty, but always comes back to the comfort of the night and the moon.

Quick Notes:

huge shoutout to @discord-of-laughter for tagging me in this!! sorry it took so long, i impulsively decided to make 2 more new ocs and couldn’t decide if I wanted them to be in Divergent, The Gifted or Star Wars (they’re still a work in progress)!!

Was training to be a Guard on the Ark with Bellamy before her arrest

Arrested for aggravated assault.

Knew about Octavia Blake a few years after she was born.

Madeline:

Moved from California to Gotham

Became a forensic scientist at the GCPD

Already has a bit of an alcohol dependency problem, which escalates when she becomes an undercover bartender at The Sirens.

Was given the nickname ‘Mirror’ by Barbara

A hopeless lesbian who tries her best to flirt but often fails

Brett:

His mom unexpectedly left Brett and his father when he was 2.

Until Brett found out the truth, he thought his father was a businessman.

Works in the recruiting part of Kingsman, partially because he likes scaring new recruits

Has a bit of an anger issue.

Not very good with guns, but is excellent at hand to hand combat.

Dorothy:

Doesn’t agree with Matt’s life as a vigilante, especially since she sides with the law more than the work of vigilantes.

Accompanies Matt when he goes to serve as Jessica’s lawyer, which is the beginning of how she meets all the Defenders.

Follows in Foggy’s footsteps and gets a job at Hogarth, Chao and Benowitz when Nelson and Murdock shuts down.

Ryan:

Had wanted to work for NASA and go to space his whole life.

On his first mission in space, an asteroid knocked out his engine, sending him into an asteroid belt.

Rocket had caught sight of his ship, and he was saved by the Guardians.

Thought he was dead or hallucinating when he woke up and met the Guardians.

Creates a special radio, with the help of Rocket, which he often uses to communicate with his family.

Zachary:

Has the power to manipulate and implement death on any living thing around him.

Grew up imprisoned at an A.R.G.U.S. lab until he is freed by Lily.

Accidentally almost kills Ray when the Legends find him and Lily’s metahuman refuge.

Doesn’t trust the Legends and was upset that Lily wanted to go with them.

Is incredibly insecure about his powers and believes he hasn’t fully accessed his full potential.

Lily:

Has the power to manipulate all sort of energy, including life force.

Knows her power isn’t as strong as Zach’s, which she believes is because death is stronger than life.

Wants to become part of the Legends so that one day she can change the timeline and erase A.R.G.U.S.’ existence.

Does not forgive her father for experimenting on metahumans, although she misses her parents very much.

Is very trusting and optimistic, despite all she’s seen

Natalyie

The only survivor the massacre at Tuanul, was saved by Poe and escaped with BB-8.

Becomes close friends with Finn and Rey when she becomes part of the adventure.

Meets Mia when she decides to stay at the Resistance base.

Skilled with a speeder and other vehicles, eventually trains to become a pilot.

Becomes close with Mia when she is assigned to maintain Natalyie’s ship

Mia

Has been a part of the Resistance all her life.

Was taught to be a mechanic from her father and older brother.

Blames herself for the death of her mother when her ship malfunctions during a mission.

Also good with droids

Close friends with Poe and the Tico sisters

Are they in love or do they have a crush? A relationship?

Eloise: If you’d ask her straight up, she tell you no to all three, even though Raven would say otherwise. She has a weird relationship with Bellamy, which is somewhere between best friends and something more, but Eloise is still reluctant to let people too close.

Madeline: Madeline has the biggest crush on Barbara, and she doesn’t even bother trying to hide it. They eventually start dating, even when Madeline is supposed to be undercover.

Brett: Brett has a massive crush on Eggsy, but he’s too afraid to say something about it.

Dorothy: Dorothy has a tiny crush on Jack, but they also have a bit of a weird relationship that borders between mentor/apprentice, friends and something more. But Dorothy knows he’s still not over the death of his wife.

Olivia: Olivia has a tiny crush on Cook, but she’s too shy to tell him about it. Especially since she think’s he’s more interested in Effy than her.

Trysha: Trysha definitely wouldn’t say she’s in love, but she has a bit of a soft spot for Jaime, even though they’ve only met once or twice, because she thinks he’s truly good at heart. But she’s not sure if she’d describe that as a crush.

Alexandra: Alexandra had hooked up with Matt, yet it never went anywhere. They both tried to make it work, but it eventually fizzled out, especially with the arrival of Elektra catalysing it. She’d want to try again if she had the chance, but otherwise, she’d rather focus on work.

Ryan: Ryan’s never had that many crushes his whole life, even back on Earth, and sometimes he wonders if he’ll ever find someone. However, if he doesn’t, he think’s he’ll be content with it, especially he loves being with the Guardians.

Zachary: Zachary is in love with Lily, no matter how hard he tries to deny it. She’s his best friend, and he gets incredibly jealous when she starts hanging out with the other Legends.

Lily: Lily will fall in love with someone at the drop of a hat. She’s pretty sure she’s had crushes on half of the Legends already, but she has a soft spot for Zachary.

Natalyie: Natalyie had been attracted to Mia right from the start, and has asked her out. The two have been in a relationship ever since.

Mia: Mia is been in a relationship with Natalyie, and is secretly grateful Natalyie is so upfront with her feelings and asked her out first, since Mia is pretty sure she’d be to shy to ever ask Natalyie out.

If your OC could have any superpower, which would it be and why?

Eloise: Eloise would want the power to manipulate time, specifically be able to go back and time and change the past. She wouldn’t be sure how to do it, but she’d make saving her father her top priority.

Madeline: Madeline would love to be able to read people’s minds and influence them.

Brett: Brett would want something that enhances him physically, like super strength or super speed -- something that would make him better in combat.

Dorothy: Dorothy would want healing powers. She’s saved lots of lives as a paramedic, but she’s also lost many -- and she hates the feeling of losing someone she’s trying to save.

Olivia: Olivia would also want to be telepathic. She likes observing people, and she’d be curious to know what goes on in people’s heads.

Trysha: Trysha also want to be able to go back in time and save her family, and everyone else she loves.

Alexandra: Alexandra sometimes wishes she had enhances abilities, like super speed, because when she’s with the Defenders she sometimes feels a little useless being unable to fight.

Ryan: Ryan was fascinated by Peter’s abilities on Ego’s planet, and wishes he could control energy, just because it looks cool.

Name a bad habit your OC has?

Eloise: Shuts people out really easily. All it takes is for one thing to go wrong, and Eloise can completely shut down. It’s a coping mechanism she’s developed to protect herself, since she figures if she doesn’t let anyone close, she won’t get hurt.

Madeline: Drinking too much. Before she went undercover, Madeline already has a bit of problem with alcohol, but it becomes a full on problem when she starts working at The Sirens. She has problems knowing when to stop.

Brett: Swearing. A lot. Of course, if you asked him, he wouldn’t think it’s a problem, but especially when he’s mad it can get out of hand.

Dorothy: Fidgeting. Dorothy is so used to working and moving around a lot, that when she doesn’t have something to do, she usually finds herself pulling at her sleeves, spinning around pens, and generally just being unable to sit still.

Olivia: Eating too much junk food. Generally, she has a balanced diet, but when she gets stressed she can go through bags of chips and candy without even noticing.

Trysha: Biting her lips. No matter how much her mother tried to get her to drop the habit, it’s just become something she does. She’ll sometimes pick at the dry skin on her lips too, although she knows she shouldn’t.

Alexandra: Overworking herself. She’ll work day and night and won’t look after herself, and she’ll usually end up stressing herself out.

Ryan: Staying up late. He doesn’t mean too, but sometimes he’ll get so absorbed in a new invention he’s building, or talking to his family on the radio, he won’t realise he hadn’t slept at all until Peter or Gamora comes by his room the next day.

Zachary: Incredibly distrusting. He just has a hard time opening up to people, which means often times he comes off as very rude or standoffish when he meets new people.

Lily: She plays with her hair a lot. Usually when she’s nervous, but even when she’s deep in through she’ll find herself tugging it or twisting it, which means the ends of her hair are kinda frayed. She’ll keep it up out of her face most of the time to stop herself.

Natalyie: Being a bit close minded. She’s incredibly stubborn, and it takes her a while to see things from another perspective.

Mia: Stressing herself out too easily, especially over the most minute failure. She’s a bit of a perfectionist, so she doesn’t handle it very well when something goes wrong.

Eloise: A knife. Maybe a few bullets she forgot she had stashed. Possibly a tool or a loose wire Raven asked her to hold onto and she had forgot to return.

Madeline: Receipts. Pieces of paper she’s scribbled on. A pen. One or two lipsticks and maybe some mascara. Some loose change she couldn’t be bothered to put in her wallet.

Brett: Tips from his job as a waiter. His phone. Wallet. Kingsman glasses.

Dorothy: Surgical gloves. A pen or two. Statesman glasses. Her phone. Lots of hair ties and bobby pins.

Olivia: Her phone. Wallet. Probably a folded up drawing Scott had given her.

Trysha: A knife or two. An arrowhead. A small piece of fabric she was intending to make into a dress for her mother, but never finished.

Natalyie: Her communications device which she frequently forgets to wear. A small trinket Mia made for her. Knife.

Mia: Loose bolts and screws. Hairbands, both new and broken.

What makes them (unreasonably) angry or defensive, what kind of behaviour in others can’t they stand? Pet Peeves?

Eloise: Eloise will get incredibly angry if anyone tries to bring up her past against her, or try and hurt her friends. She hates being excluded from important decisions.

Madeline: Madeline gets angry if anyone brings up her alcoholism, or even makes a small remark about how much she drinks. She gets annoyed when others are too serious.

Brett: A lot of things can get Brett riled up, since he’s got a bit of an anger issue. If you try to sideline him or underestimate him, if you’re rude to his friends, even if you just accidentally bump into him, he might snap.

Dorothy: Not many things can get Dorothy angry or defensive. She’ll get angry if someone threatens her mother, otherwise she’s pretty patient. Occasionally, she’ll get annoyed when the paramedics she’s working with get in her way or aren’t doing their job right, especially if someone’s life is on the line.

Olivia: Bringing up her family, especially her little brother, is a bit of a sore spot for Olivia and will definitely make her defensive. Other than that, she’s keeps to herself.

Trysha: Thinking about the death of her parents and brothers gets Trysha incredibly angry, and she also can’t stand when people underestimate her and Arya.

Alexandra: Alexandra gets annoyed pretty easily, especially if a case doesn’t go right for her. She’s not very good at losing, and will overwork herself to win a case, and expects the people around her to do the same -- so if anyone slacks off around her, she’ll get angry. She also can’t stand slow walkers.

Ryan: Ryan’s a pretty chill guy, but one of his pet peeves is when someone messes with his stuff. Especially in his room. He has everything in a certain place and has a system for everything, so if someone goes in there and messes it up, which is usually Peter or Drax, that’ll really push his buttons.

Zachary: Zachary gets angry very easily, but will lose it if something every happens to Lily. He also gets defensive when it comes to his family and his past.

Lily: Lily gets angry when people don’t believe in her, and also if they try and agitate Zachary. She also gets angry when she can’t help others, but more so getting angry at herself than others.

Natalyie: Natalyie gets furious thinking about the First Order, and that’s pretty much it. She also gets angry at herself when she fails a mission, or when she’s ordered to fall back or do something she doesn’t fully believe in.

Mia: Mia also gets angry at herself when she fails something. She also gets angry whenever someone doubts her abilities or tries to do her job.

Is your OC a good liar?

Eloise: She didn’t use to be, but she’s developed the skill over time. But she doesn’t usually lie, she prefers to be upfront.

Madeline: When it comes to big things that matter, she can be trusted to lie (Jim did send her undercover, after all). But when it comes to little things, not at all. She either gets too flustered or starts getting all giggly, especially when she’s drunk.

Brett: He’s not great at it. He usually blurts out the truth.

Dorothy: She can be if she needs to be, but people she’s close to can usually tell if she’s lying.

Olivia: She’s a decent liar, and becomes better at it.

Trysha: Although Trysha prefers to tell the truth, she’s an excellent liar when she needs to be, a skill she perfects even more over time.

Alexandra: She’s great at lying.

Ryan: Not the greatest, both when he was on Earth and in space.

Zachary: Pretty good at lying, especially since he’s spent most his life being secretive and hiding his true feelings.

Lily: In a serious situation, she can lie decently. Otherwise, she’s not great at it, and gets too nervous.

Natalyie: Was a great liar as a kid and still is, to this day.

Mia: Not a good liar, she gets too flustered.

When her mother is arrested on Lydia Degan’s ranch, a young Marta finds herself amidst the Testament of New Ezekiel in its infancy. As she travels with the other escapees, she watches the church grow, the gospel teachings evolve, and creates a close bond with the reverend Sullivan Knoth.

Characters: Marta and Sullivan Knoth

Chapter 10-February 2, 1969:

No longer did Marta pay heed to the stares and whispers that came her way each day since the prophet’s return. With her head held high and a tray of food in hand, she walked past them until she reached Knoth’s tent--a place now forbidden to all others.

“Father Knoth? It’s Marta. May I come in?”

Like every other day, Knoth’s answer came with the same delay, and the same question. “Are you alone?”

Marta looked over her shoulder to meet the gazes of the testament. None said anything, but they all awaited the same answer, but Marta only shook her head in response. A collective sigh came from them all, and Marta returned her attention to the tent. “Yes, Father. It is only me.”

“Then you may enter.”

She stepped inside and beneath her foot was a sheet of paper. It was just one of dozens scattered across the floor, covered with jagged writing, sketches, and unknown measurements. She tiptoed around the litter until she reached the cot that Knoth sat up in for the first time in days.

During those first few days, he was too weak to sit up or even eat without help, but now he held a up a notebook and wrote in it with a swollen hand. “You can leave the tray on the table,” he said, without even looking up at her.

Marta set the meal on the bedside table, but lingered. As Knoth scrawled in his notebook, she knelt down to pick up one of the papers from the ground. On it was a messy sketch of a chapel. The roof slanted on both sides so it was shaped like an “A”. Before it stood three pillars and to the side were lists of measurements written deep enough to tear the paper. She looked back up at Knoth, then the sketch, before stepping forward. “Father Knoth?”

“Yes, my child?”

“What is this?” she asked, holding out the sketch.

He looked up for only a moment before returning to his work. “That is to be our place of worship,”

“In Temple Gate?”

Knoth nodded. “Yes, in Temple Gate…” he uttered the name as if it were born from a foreign tongue. “The three pillars are to represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The foundation for our promised land.”

Marta observed him as he spoke.

No longer did his skin hang so loosely. His face regained much of its shape and color, save for the dark circles that had yet to subside. Then there was the eye that remained. It shone brighter than ever as it focussed on the writing.

“Is there something you need?” he asked when she stared too long.

Her eyes drifted to the floor and the other sheets of paper with their childish scrawl and gibberish. “Do you mind if I look at the rest?”

“If you so wish,” he replied, turning the page.

Marta reached for another sheet of paper. This one was map of the western United States. The edges of the page were uneven, as if it were ripped from a book. In the state of Arizona was a circle around the name “Havasupai”, and at the side written, “Temple Gate”.

“Is this where we are to travel?” Marta asked. “Havasupai, Arizona?”

“Yes. It is where the Lord made known to me the dimensions and form of Temple Gate.”

“Why there?”

“Because it will provide for us all we need to thrive.”

“But...isn’t Arizona mostly desert?”

“It is, but we shall be as an oasis in that desert.”

His voice was shorter than usual, so Marta let it drop and picked up another paper. She observed the images and words on each sheet, gathering them into a neat stack as she cleared them from the floor. After a half hour, she picked up the last piece. On it was drawn a familiar cross, but surrounded by branches and thorns, as if it were restrained.

"Our emblem,” Knoth said, as if he could see beyond his own writing. “To set us apart from the wicked world who believes in a lie.”

“Did the Lord show you this symbol on the mountain?”

“It is that of the spider-eyed lamb--the harbinger of judgement.”

“Must we await judgement still? Even after we have followed his word precisely?”

“Yes, for following the way of Christ is not that which can be taken lightly. The world would have you believe that you may declare your faith in the Lord and he will never ask anything more of you, but that’s a filthy lie spread by the Devil’s own.” Knoth winced. “The trials and tribulations remain. The Lord is by our side in the battlefield, but there are still enemies who would see us perish. We must ready ourselves before the seed is planted among our flock.”

“You mentioned that once before--that the enemy shall be of our seed. What did you mean by that?”

Knoth lowered the notebook at last. For a time, he gazed at her, before trading the book for the stack of papers. “I think it is best if you see for yourself.”

When Marta opened the notebook, she gasped. Atop the page was written: The Gospel of Knoth-Chapter 11. Several chapters beyond the seven chapters of their teachings.

“Father Knoth!” Marta slammed the book shut. “D...Does anyone else know of this?”

“Our ways are evolving,” Knoth said normally, his expression unchanged. “It is only natural that it be made known in our gospel.”

“Yes, I understand, but...do the deacons know? Shouldn’t they be seeing this first?”

“In due time, they will.”

“Then I am not fit to look upon this.” She held the book towards Knoth. “Not before the deacons…”

Knoth pushed the notebook back to her. “But it is, my child.” He smiled softly. “I must confess that during this time, I have come to think of you as my own. You have held strong when others have faltered and proven your faith time and time again. For that, I can think of none other to receive my word above all others.”

Her head hung low as she spoke, but still she muttered, “Thank you, Father Knoth. It truly is the highest of honors.” She opened the book back to where she left off, and looked up to him.

“Read it aloud for me, will you? I want to hear how it sounds.”

“Yes, Father Knoth.” Marta cleared her throat. “Verse 1: The fruit of destruction shall ripen with the foul womb of the martyred mother, the spider-eyed lamb shall bring judgement of the lesser whore onto even the great whore who sitteth upon many waters. Verse 2: For from Ezekiel’s nation the Enemy shall be born.” She paused, looking up at Knoth. “The Enemy shall be born of one of our women? Like a child?”

“Precisely.”

“But why take on a vessel so powerless?”

“Is there any form more deceptive? Who would suspect the sleeping babe of being our undoing? Such deception gives the Enemy power over us.”

“But how would one deal with such an Enemy?”

“Keep reading.”

She nodded. “Verse 3: And then shall the wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. Verse 4: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” Marta frowned. “So the enemy must be vanquished before our Lord’s coming…”

“And you need not fear that. For the Lord only presents us with challenges that he knows we can overcome.” He assured at first, but his tone became short with the last two words. “Keep reading.”

“Verse 5…” Marta’s voice sank. “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish because they recieveth not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Verse 6: And for this cause God shall send them strong delusions that they should believe a lie.” Her brow furrowed. “But Father...if there are to be deceptions, how shall we know that we are not the ones being deceived?”

“Keep reading,” Knoth snapped.

“Yes, Father,” she murmured. “Verse 8: And Ezekiel said unto his midwives, and his hunters: you are the raven and I am the wolf , who will allow you to feed if you lead me to the slaughter. Verse 9: For God has said the flesh of beast is yours only in sacrifice to me…” Marta’s eyes grew wide when she looked upon the final words. “Even unto the flesh of your offspring.” She barely spoke above a whisper, and shut the book after the passage. “This can’t mean what I think it does, can it?”

“I thought the very same when He first made known to me the Enemy’s true nature.” Knoth stared at nothing in particular. “But as I meditated on His word, I began to understand. For the Lord offered up his own Son to save us from our wickedness, but mankind wasted his lovingkindness by twisting his teachings beyond recognition.” His hands clenched into fists and his brow furrowed. “Only we can see the truth. That is why it is placed upon our flock to set things right-by matching His own sacrifice to save us from Hell everlasting.”

Marta’s eyes drifted back to the book. “But we are only flesh and blood while the Lord is most holy. How can we be expected to match such a sacrifice?”

“It is not a matter of can or cannot. It is simply what must come to be. God will ask of us impossible sacrifices, but in turn the rewards shall be greater than we can imagine.” A trace of a smile came to him. “All He asks for is our faith to carry out his word. If we just hold to that, then all things are possible.”

No longer did Knoth speak to Marta. She was only a witness to his mutterings, and she didn’t stay to listen to anymore. If he called after her departure, she did not hear. She left the tent, without a word.

The testament awaited outside, but she walked past them too, ignoring their barrage of questions. Only when she was out of earshot from the camp did she stop.

Once more, she looked upon that mountain top. It towered higher than ever and its shadow cast over the valley. Somewhere on its peak lied an eye cast aside for the truth, cut out in the darkest night, in the freezing cold, a time when death should have been the only escape, yet it was just the eye that rotted and festered in that desolate place, too vile for even the lowest of beasts to devour.

Marta sat atop the earth. She continued to stare at that mountaintop, but there was only silence.

2019 Supernova review featuring Shaun from Comics2Movies

Roll up, roll up, roll up, or if you are in Queensland and melting in this heat wash up instead. Wow, this week we have an awesome and exciting show full of fun and laughter for you to enjoy. We also have a special guest joining us to recap the fabulous Supanova Brisbane!!! That’s right folks, Supanova again (we need Kermit the Frog here running off waving his hands). We talk about some of the cool things we saw, some of the things that made us laugh, and why Buck seems to fear lycra, although to be fair it is a valid point.

We also announce the winner of the Nerdy Bag of holding competition. Congratulations to Jessica on winning our inaugural Supanova competition. We hope to have it again next year so, make sure you listen to get involved, also next year we will make entry available for our international listeners. Now I can give you no more spoilers or teasers on this week’s episode as there is just sooooo much to look forward to other then yes, Buck did argue with some people at Supanova.

Oh, we do have the games being played, the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and special events for the week. We also wish to give a special thank you to some awesome people, the legends at Sons of Obiwan, the heroes at SuperTee, and the Rockstar Shaun at Comics2Movies, they all contributed gear to the Nerdy Bag of Holding.
