How Luke Arnold went from pirate to author to Home and Away
Mediaweek Original by Trent Thomas
Tumblr media
“2020 wasn’t the ideal year to be a debuting author let alone putting two books out”
Actor Luke Arnold first became known to Australians on a main stream scale when he portrayed Michael Hutchence in the mini-series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. Arnold then went on to gain international recognition as a lead on the US drama Black Sails.
2020 was a busy year for Arnold who released his first novel titled The Last Smile in Sunder City followed by his second novel Dead Man In A Ditch later in the same year.
Mediaweek spoke to Arnold about life as an author as well as his career as an actor including his return to Aussie screens through Home and Away.
When we spoke with the actor, he was in the middle of a tour with the pop culture expo Supanova, which has since been delayed. Arnold said that he had relished the opportunity to connect with fans of his work, especially considering he hadn’t done many expos like this before.
“I never did any of these before. There was one time that Zach McGowan, who played Vane on Back Sails, and I did a little signing in San Diego [for Comic-Con] one year, but that was just an excuse to be there for the party.
“But now doing Supanova in the Gold Coast and Melbourne I am really loving it, it’s such a great community with the guests, the fans and all the other creative people there. And I am straddling the two worlds now being there as both an actor and as a writer.
It is the first time I can really hang out with other authors because my books came out last year and I didn’t get to do the events I had planned. This was my first time getting to go out with my books and meet some fans of the acting and some fans of the writing.”
Luke Arnold: Author
The year 2020 saw Arnold release not one but two fiction novels and Arnold said that he is enjoying juggling being an emerging author and continuing his acting career.
“2020 wasn’t the ideal year to be a debut author let alone putting two books out in the one year, but going back and forth between acting and writing I have been enjoying it a lot. I am lucky enough that jobs are coming in and I work steadily but there is always a gap between things. I finished a job in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, and my next one is not for a couple of months so it’s the perfect time to get some writing done.”
Arnold said that it is hard to know how the books are going because it’s a world that he does not have much experience in, but he is optimistic about the process so far.
“People seem to be buying them, liking them, and we are editing the third book in the series now and there are plans to keep doing more so fingers crossed it turns out all right.”
Tumblr media
Two books in one year are rare from a writer and Arnold said not to expect that level of volume from him again, but one book a year may be possible.
“From the point I finished the first one to when we got it out, that took quite a while so that’s why I was able to follow up the first one so quickly.
“While we were working out the release of the first one, the different countries and how that was being handled I had time to really run ahead with the second. I definitely won’t be putting out two books every year as an ongoing routine! Maybe one book a year is probably doable, and I think that routine I can keep up depending on how I balance that with the acting.”
Luke Arnold on Black Sails
Arnold is best known to American audiences for his work on Black Sails, Arnold described the role as a dream job.
“It was the perfect job in so many ways. When you sign on for anything you never know what it is going to be.
You might get the pilot script or maybe a couple of scripts but even if that is good you don’t know what the actors will be like, or the directors will be like or where you will be living. There is this gamble that happens every time especially when you sign a multiyear contract, and with Black Sails I couldn’t have hoped for anything better.”
Tumblr media
Arnold said that the show continued to improve each season because there was a clear idea of what they were trying to achieve.
“No one quite knows what type of show you’re going to be in at the start, and they have different ideas, as actors you are looking to your directors and show runners and producers trying to work out what it is meant to be according to them.
We came back for season two knowing what the show was now, when you start a show there is sometimes that feeling of too many cooks in the kitchen, but by then we knew.”
The series was filmed in South Africa which Arnold also credited with helping improve the quality of the performances.
“Over time our cast really galvanised. One of the blessings, when you work on the other side of the world, is that all you can do is focus on the job and really commit to it. It was like we were developing a play for four years with that level of rehearsal.”
Tumblr media
Arnold said that another reason the show continued to improve after season one was that they were able to have more sets to play with.
“At that point we had one and a half ships and the town and it was like ‘okay you pretty much have to do all your story on these sets because it cost us a lot of money and that’s what it is’.
Then at the beginning of season two the world starts opening up and we begin to see different places and characters start to go off on their own adventures and that really helped shaped where the show was going.
By the time we were in season four we were spread all across the world, building sets just to see them once before we blow them up, setting ships on fire and hunting sharks, the scope of the show became quite mammoth by the end.”
Treasure Island?
With Black Sails being a prequel to the famed Treasure Island story, Arnold said that he wouldn’t rule out reprising the character of John Silver in the original tale.
“I reckon we need to let John Steinberg, Dan Shotz and Robert Levine do another couple of projects and then maybe we all come back and do that next adventure.”
Home and Away
Most actors do a show like Home and Away before going to Hollywood but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Arnold did it the other way around with a turn as Dr. Lewis Hayes on the Aussie soap.
“2020 for me was meant to be a bit of a world-wide book tour. I was in LA doing some stuff there and preparing for the book tour and that got scuppered and I found myself back in Australia.
Tumblr media
“I think Home and Away and Neighbours were the only things shooting in Australia. They called me up, and I guess that I have an existing relationship with Seven because I played Michael Hutchence in Never Tears Us Apart. When it came up, I was like that is something that I have never done before and is an Australian staple.
“It is the type of show where you make so much TV every week and everyone is working really hard, and it was in the back of my head a good way to let people know that I am back in town and might be around for things.”

2020 Creative Review
Well, here it is Jan 01 2021 and I’m making the time to post a little bit of a review of 2020.
2020 didn’t feel very creative, but as I look back I was pretty happy with a few things I did create.
Hughes Cosplay - March 2020
I decided to cosplay Hughes at SupaNova Gold Coast in March 2020. So glad we made it as this was the last event of any kind before the lockdowns stopped large public gatherings for the year.
My goal was to not overstress the little details, and I think the process of developing this cosplay from a borrowed/bought costume and augmenting it with other second hand, bought new and made pieces worked really well. Very happy with the result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Royai Week - June 2020
Initially I felt very disengaged from the prompts this year, but to my amazement and delight I ended up writing 5 kind-of-connected pieces.
I’m really happy with these short stories and if you were to read them and drop a comment it would be the MOST AWESOME start to 2021!!!
AO3          FFN
Riza Model Project - June - August 2020
Back in June I was also trying to model a credible 3D Riza in Blender and Meshmixer. I was pretty happy with how it was going. Then the project massively stalled due to a cascading series of computer issues. No photos of the work to date. Here’s a link to a post I made about it back then.
First PC Build - December 2020
I’ve assembled my first PC and shuffled lots of files/data, so hopefully I’ll be back into the Riza Model Project soon. Not FMA, but without a PC, where would all my Tumblr internet goodness come from?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good to remember the good bits that have happened, Praying we all have a calm and creative 2021.
Pax vobiscum.

I honestly cannot believe that we're already about to bring in a new year. 2019 was a kinda crazy year for me.
I started the year with the determination to really try and run my own little business. I did my very first Artist Alley in April at Gold Coast Supanova. It didn't go well (lol). I struggled to get anything going properly and burnt myself out about halfway through the year. Had a lovely mental breakdown as I tried to figure out what my next step was.
But then I got a job at a really awesome place and suddenly things were starting to look up. I had a reason to leave the house, I had a whole new bunch of friendly people around me and didn't have to worry about my bills any more! Score!
The last few months of this year have been so hectic and busy, but I really have enjoyed it. Other memorable moments from this year include:
- Climbing Mt Ngungun (and crying when I got to the top lol) - All of the random outings with my friends (picnics, road trips) - Made everyone wear Hawaiian shirts for my birthday at the arcade (who's ready for round 2 in 2020? :P) - Dyed my hair god knows how many times - Tried Keto for 30 days (really gotta go back to that oops) - Friends weddings/baby showers etc. - Jumped on a trampoline for the first time in how many years?? - "tried" to play tennis on a regular basis (Kerri-Anne Jeffrey Candice Athey we gotta get back on that haha) - Threw up for the first time in a long time (ew no thank you) - Saw Chicago the Musical - Did my 2nd artist alley at Brisnova (which went way better!!)
All in all 2019 has been a rollercoaster ride. I am super eager to see what 2020 will bring me, fingers crossed it's mostly positive, and I hope the new year brings you all good health, happiness and success!

2019 Supernova review featuring Shaun from Comics2Movies
Roll up, roll up, roll up, or if you are in Queensland and melting in this heat wash up instead. Wow, this week we have an awesome and exciting show full of fun and laughter for you to enjoy. We also have a special guest joining us to recap the fabulous Supanova Brisbane!!! That’s right folks, Supanova again (we need Kermit the Frog here running off waving his hands). We talk about some of the cool things we saw, some of the things that made us laugh, and why Buck seems to fear lycra, although to be fair it is a valid point.
We also announce the winner of the Nerdy Bag of holding competition. Congratulations to Jessica on winning our inaugural Supanova competition. We hope to have it again next year so, make sure you listen to get involved, also next year we will make entry available for our international listeners. Now I can give you no more spoilers or teasers on this week’s episode as there is just sooooo much to look forward to other then yes, Buck did argue with some people at Supanova.
Oh, we do have the games being played, the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and special events for the week. We also wish to give a special thank you to some awesome people, the legends at Sons of Obiwan, the heroes at SuperTee, and the Rockstar Shaun at Comics2Movies, they all contributed gear to the Nerdy Bag of Holding. Thank you so much for helping to make this happen. Also a huge thank you to the all-powerful Podfather (All hail the Podfather) for helping us be at Supanova and the Baroness for all her hard work in organizing the event, also her patience when we were misbehaving like little boys with all the excitement.

Remembrances
11 Nov 1918 - George Lawrence Price, Canadian soldier. He is traditionally recognized as the last soldier of the British Empire to be killed during the First World War. He was fatally shot in the left breast by a German sniper as he stepped out of the house into the street. He was pulled into one of the houses and treated by a young Belgian nurse who ran across the street to help, but died a minute later at 10:58 a.m., November 11, 1918. His death was just two minutes before the armistice came into effect at 11 a.m. He died at the age of 25 in Ville-sur-Haine - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Lawrence_Price
11 Nov 1918 - Henry Gunther, American soldier and likely the last soldier of any of the belligerents to be killed during World War I. Gunther's squad approached a roadblock of two German machine guns in the village of Chaumont-devant-Damvillers near Meuse, in Lorraine. Gunther got up, against the orders of his close friend and now sergeant, Ernest Powell, and charged with his bayonet. The German soldiers, already aware of the Armistice that would take effect in one minute, tried to wave Gunther away. He kept going and fired "a shot or two". When he got too close to the machine guns, he was shot in a short burst of automatic fire and killed instantly. He was killed at 10:59 a.m., about one minute before the Armistice was to take effect at 11:00 a.m. He died at the age of 23.
11 Nov 1973 - Artturi Ilmari Virtanen, Finnish chemist and recipient of the 1945 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his research and inventions in agricultural and nutrition chemistry, especially for his fodder preservation method". He invented AIV silage which improved milk production and a method of preserving butter, the AIV salt, which led to increased Finnish butter exports. He died from pneumonia at the age of 78 in Helsinki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artturi_Ilmari_Virtanen
Famous Birthdays
11 Nov 1951 - Kim Peek, American savant. Known as a "megasavant", he had an exceptional memory, but he also experienced social difficulties, possibly resulting from a developmental disability related to congenital brain abnormalities. He was the inspiration for the autistic savant character Raymond Babbitt in the movie Rain Man. Although Peek was previously diagnosed with autism, it is now thought that he instead had FG syndrome. He was born in Salt lake City, Utah - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Peek
11 Nov 1948 - Vincent Schiavelli, American character actor and food writer noted for his work on stage, screen and television, often described as "the man with the sad eyes." He was notable for his numerous supporting roles. He often linked his unique facial appearance and tall stature to Marfan syndrome. Schiavelli gained fame as a character actor. His best-known roles include Fredrickson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the Subway Ghost in Ghost, Organ Grinder in Batman Returns and Dr. Kaufman in Tomorrow Never Dies. Schiavelli also performed in a few video games, including Emperor: Battle for Dune as Harkonnen Mentat Yanich Kobal. He was born in Brooklyn, New York - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Schiavelli
11 Nov 1907 - Joseph Gilbert Hamilton, American professor of Medical Physics, Experimental Medicine, General Medicine, and Experimental Radiology as well as director of the Crocker Laboratory, part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Hamilton studied the medical effects of exposure to radioactive isotopes, which included the use of unsuspecting human subjects. He was born in Waverley, Massachusetts - https://www.onthisday.com/people/joseph-gilbert-hamilton
