Heartstopper author Alice Oseman: ‘If you don’t have sex and romance, you feel like you haven’t achieved’

The writer and illustrator on turning her ‘weird hobby’ into a bestselling YA series and Netflix hit, the importance of asexual representation and lessons from her fans on love bites

At 28, the author and illustrator Alice Oseman recently achieved what so many of her peers cannot: she bought a flat. But instead of giving up Netflix so she could save for a deposit, as Kirstie Allsopp notoriously recommended, she sold the streaming service the rights to her gay romance comic book series.

The series in question is of course Heartstopper, the web comic turned graphic novel turned Netflix show that this paper’s reviewer described as “completely lovely” when it aired earlier this year. The boy-meets-boy tale, set in a British secondary school, sees rugby captain Nick and socially awkward Charlie navigate friendships, bullying, coming out – and falling in love. It’s not hard to see why the TV adaptation won over teenagers and adults alike, with its lovable characters, quirky nods to its comic book origins – for example, tiny animations of hand-drawn flowers form a circle round the actors when Nick and Charlie share their first kiss – and an injection of starriness in the shape of Olivia Colman (Nick’s mum) and Stephen Fry (headmaster Barnes). The show’s success resulted in a huge increase in book sales for Oseman: the Heartstopper series has now sold more than 6m copies worldwide. Volume One recently won the Books Are My Bag readers’ choice award and is a contender for the 2022 Waterstones book of the year.

Oseman, who is also the author of four prose novels for young adults, knows her experience in the publishing world has been a rare one. “Very few creators achieve this level of success, and I’m very aware of that. I feel really lucky and grateful to be in this position.”

She may put it down to luck, but there is a quiet determination in the way the writer talks about her work. At just 18, she made headlines after bagging a six-figure deal for her first book, Solitaire, which tells the story of 16-year-old Tori Spring, a sardonic introvert who is reluctantly persuaded by her new friend Michael to help discover the identity of a hacker who is disrupting the school computer network. What motivated her to send out her writing to publishers at such a young age? “I thought it was good,” she says simply.

Clearly she wasn’t the only one – publishing houses tussled for the novel, which HarperCollins bought after a bidding war. The announcement was made during Oseman’s freshers’ week at Durham University, when commissioning editor Elizabeth Clifford called the novel “the perfect story for the Instagram Tumblr generation”. From Solitaire grew Heartstopper: Nick and Charlie, who are 16 and 15 at the start of the comic, began as supporting characters in the novel, which is set roughly a year after the pair began their relationship. Oseman had always loved them as characters, and “knew that they had some kind of backstory”. Initially, she wanted to tell that story in another novel, but “just couldn’t get it to work”.

“Nick and Charlie’s story didn’t have that beginning, middle and end structure that you have in a novel,” she says. The episodic nature of the web comic format allowed her to zoom in on specific periods in the teenagers’ lives without the need for an overarching narrative.

Oseman grew up in Rochester, Kent, with a dance teacher mother and a father who works for an electronics company. She “hated” the local grammar school that she attended, always wanting “to be at home writing stories and doing creative things”. She started working on Heartstopper during the final year of her English degree (“I skipped a lot of lectures”), at which point drawing the comic strip felt like “a very weird hobby”, rather than something that could actually be lucrative. The first instalment went live the September after she graduated, and a dedicated group of readers began to grow.

It is arguably the writer’s first-hand knowledge of how fandoms and online communities operate that has been the key to Heartstopper’s success. From the very start of the web comic, Oseman engaged directly with her fans, responding to their comments and fan art online. Due to the sheer number of messages, she can no longer reply to all her readers, but her latest book, The Heartstopper Yearbook, is evidence that she still wants to cultivate that fandom. The yearbook, “a cross between an annual and an art book”, is aimed at the comic and TV show’s fans, complete with quizzes, drawing guides, and behind-the-scenes information about the characters.

Oseman understands this world because she was – and still is, though to a lesser degree – part of it. She is a self-proclaimed “Tumblr veteran”, having joined the blogging site in 2010, using it, alongside Tapas and Webtoon, to post the original Heartstopper web comic. Tumblr “very much shaped the person that I’ve become, in good ways and bad ways,” Oseman says. Seeing other people’s blogs “opened my eyes to queerness in a way that the real world was just not giving me,” she says; a digital coming-out experience she tried to replicate through Heartstopper’s Nick, who questions his sexuality via YouTube videos and BuzzFeed quizzes.

The author’s gender is “an ongoing journey” – she has recently started using they/them pronouns alongside she/her, but isn’t “tied to any specific labels”. She identifies as asexual and aromantic – something she explores in her 2020 novel Loveless, which is “not an autobiographical book, but it does draw on a lot of experiences”. Like Oseman, Loveless’s protagonist Georgia went away to university feeling something of an outsider, having never had a crush on anyone, despite enjoying fictional romance stories. Oseman remembers taking online quizzes to work out where she fell on the Kinsey scale, a method of identifying a person’s sexuality on a scale of zero to six. The quizzes would return her result not as a number, but as an X. “Well, that’s not helpful to me,” she would think.

At the time she had no language to describe her asexual feelings. “The world is obsessed with sex and romance. And if you don’t have that, you feel like you haven’t achieved something that’s really important,” she says. Oseman tries to highlight the importance of platonic relationships in her own work – even in Heartstopper, an out-and-out love story, friendship is hugely important – and to include asexual representation in her books. She has even told her online followers that her character Tori, who identifies as straight in Solitaire (largely because Oseman didn’t know about asexuality at the time), is probably somewhere “on the ace/aro spectrums” and that this will “become canon” in Volume Five of Heartstopper. As much as Oseman and others like her are trying to start conversations about asexuality, she doesn’t think it’s going to be a widely talked about subject any time soon. “We’re never really going to see much cultural change in terms of awareness until a big celebrity comes out as being asexual,” she says. “And there’s nothing I can do about that.”

Could she become that big celebrity herself? “I need to do that!” she laughs, but it’s clear that even the small taste of fame that has come with the success of Heartstopper doesn’t suit Oseman. These days, she sets firm boundaries when it comes to social media. “Four years ago, I was perfectly happy to share my whole life online,” she says. “I very much felt like I had to put out everything about myself in order to sell my books.”

The pressure to share personal details with fans is still there, however, and LGBTQ+ celebrities in particular are often expected to come out publicly, sometimes before they are ready. Kit Connor, the 18-year-old star of Heartstopper, recently tweeted that he felt “forced” to come out as bisexual. “I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes,” Oseman tweeted in response.

The author herself now “treasures” being able to keep some things private: “I feel like I deserve that.” She also tries very hard not to read or be influenced by fanfiction created about her own work. “You can get caught up in trying to please the fans, but it’s impossible.”

Interacting with her teenage fanbase can be useful, however, especially when it comes to keeping her characters’ language realistic. “In Volume Three of the comics, there’s a whole storyline about Charlie having a love bite. And when I was writing the scripts for season two [of Heartstopper], I suddenly thought, do teens still use the phrase ‘love bite’?”

“Apparently they don’t,” she discovered after checking with some of her fans, so the phrase had to be swapped out for “hickey”, their current word of choice.

Oseman was adamant that she would be involved in Heartstopper’s screen adaptation. As it turned out, production company See Saw offered her the opportunity to write the screenplay straight away, but she would have been “prepared to fight for it” otherwise. “I don’t think I would have allowed someone to just take the book and do what they want with it.”

What she couldn’t control, of course, were people’s reactions to the Netflix show. While the response has been overwhelmingly positive, she was confused by the way Heartstopper has been labelled by some as “the purest, cleanest, most wholesome show [they’ve] ever seen”.

While the central relationship between Charlie and Nick is undoubtedly, and intentionally, very cute, Oseman felt some viewers were “sort of ignoring” the darker aspects of the story. “Even in season one, you’ve got an emotionally and physically abusive relationship, there’s homophobia, there’s bullying, there are implications of mental health issues,” she says, suggesting that more of these themes will be explored in future episodes. “So it was a strange reaction.”

Perhaps it’s because Heartstopper is being seen in the context of shows such as the US high school drama Euphoria, which was written for an adult audience. So while Nick, Charlie and their friends choose milkshakes over class A drugs and “crap” is as bad as it gets when it comes to expletives, this is largely because the show is specifically aimed at younger viewers. There was actually “loads of swearing” in the first draft of the script, Oseman tells me, as there is in the original comic, but the words were taken out after an executive producer explained it would mean an automatic 15 rating. “It was important to us” that the show would be “accessible to younger teens”, Oseman says, since the number of programmes aimed at this age group that depict positive queer relationships is still small.

Oseman has been pleasantly surprised by the lack of transphobic responses to the show. One of the main characters in season one, Elle, is a trans girl who has just moved to an all-girls school, and is played by trans TikTok star Yasmin Finney. The author had assumed this storyline would be criticised by some viewers, since transgender identities, particularly when it comes to teenagers, so often come under fire online. “I like to think [the lack of negativity] is because Heartstopper is so positive and joyful and full of love, so it’s hard to actively hate without seeming like a horrible person,” she says. “But that’s not how bigots work, so I’m not sure how it’s avoided that. But I’m glad that it has.”

Perhaps there has been some pushback “deep in the forums”, but it certainly hasn’t stopped the show and the comics from becoming hugely popular. Since season one aired, anyone walking into the young adult section of their local Waterstones branch is likely to be met by a barricade of Heartstoppers. Within the last year, “everything has skyrocketed in a really massive way,” Oseman says. It has “kind of changed my life”. When it all becomes overwhelming, she turns to her parents, who live near her flat in Kent. “I tell them everything,” she says, citing their support as what has got her through the more surreal moments of her career.

Right now she feels too “burnt out” to work on anything else. “I have no creativity left in my brain,” she says, with obvious frustration. It is clear there is part of her that wishes she could be back in her teenage bedroom, writing uninterrupted. “I miss having a new story to write,” she admits. “But I just don’t have the time or energy. So I’ll have to wait.” Volume Five of Heartstopper, due out in February, will be the last, at least for now, though Oseman can feel the weight of her readers’ expectation. “It’s going to be impossible to please everyone,” she says. “That’s something that I’m trying to come to terms with.” Whatever she comes up with next, it will be written in Oseman’s own time, on her own terms – and, of course, in her own flat.

As in holy fuck make up your mind ya little shit. Gay homophobic celebrity boy is the vocalist in the rock band that's literally just his and his cousin's names squashed together. R6 is one of the best in the show because he roasted gay homophobic celebrity boy and simultaneously traumatized him but he deserves it. Then there's angry lady. Everything about her is strong, even her eyebrows. Especially her eyebrows. Lesbian lady and angry lady are lesbians for each other. Then there's bitch guy. Bitch guy is 6" 9 I'm not even joking I wish I was. Bitch guy gave gay homophobic celebrity boy ✨trust issues✨ when he was a child by not giving him a playing card. That led to gay homophobic celebrity boy blackmailing his cousin, lesbian guitar lady, so she could spy on 11-yr old hacker midget, dragon boy who talks to cards, and student council president/dj/ninja. 11-yr old hacker midget was actually the one that got the playing card.

The Mastermind - Bang Chan is the most obvious choice here. Normally I hate obvious choices. But he's so damn good as the leader of this wild crew! He's the Danny Ocean here, charming everyone into joining.

The Partner in Crime - Felix. Second in command to the leader, he's the one helping him pull the team together. The Lou to Chan's Debbie, if we're talking Ocean's 8.

The Con Man - Seungmin. The con man's the one manipulating people. They have to be sharp and quick on their feet. I think Seungmin's smart enough for this role.

The Pickpocket - Lee Know. It's just a feeling, based on his dancing but also his martial arts skills, thinking that his smooth movements could translate into pickpocketing.

The Hacker - Jeongin. Gamer boy gone bad. Putting those skills to use breaking into systems as needed to pull off the big heist.

The Driver - Changbin. In a pinch, can also be used as a bruiser if they need some muscle.

The Distraction - Han. He's the one drawing all the attention to himself so the others can do what they need without being noticed.

The Roper - Hyunjin. He's the one baiting the mark, getting them into place for the plan to work. Like a honeypot, seducing the target.

Nothing to see here folks!! Just a completely normal moody, rebellious, deadpan, snarky and sarcastic teenager with a totally not mysterious and very shady past he escaped from and not made a deal with a phantom he lives with.

Anywho here’s a quick doodle of Fred Casey Jones! Lore Tidbits Down Below:

Best way too describe him is a combo of Louie Duck, Fred and Casey Jones (heh pun) mixed with L and Donatello. (where did ya think I got his hairstyle from? And the bag eyes poor teen needs some proper sleep 💤)

Rumors say he’s was a delinquent who has worked underneath a certain mobster gang overlord as a delivery/errand boy after being taken in from the streets, he wore a mask (which I’ll draw later) and prefer to use his spiked baseball bat or hockey sticks packed with exploding smokebombs pucks that he made and decorated himself.

A hacker and video game expert 🎮 and lover, has once accidentally hacked into the government. In his defense how was he suppose to know that the coding looked like a video game (his boss 100% approves and supports his interests growing up after staying for a while)later the spirits and the narrow gauge support him as well

Ended up going in Sodor in order to help prepare for a plan and finds out about the supernatural after a encounter with a certain zero spirit made him realize that even though he’s super grateful for being rescued, he didn’t wish to live a life of crime especially after discovering what exactly his boss does(he was never told, they were hidden away, the details were lightened up to him, etc) his boss isn’t searching for him

Ends up being sorta raised by the spirits after this (cough Tino and Lucy cough) while also being quite independent and wants to help them in return as a favor, feels a great deal of depth towards them and attempts to try and find gold dust or anything on tino’s demise

Is secretly very torn about trying to help them move on since he fears about being left alone again, feels guilt over helping a crime boss but pushes on after witnessing how much pain they were in

Lies about his age and other parts(excellent at pretending and lying, years of experience) in order to work on the SKR later on, manages to keep up the act and get away with it cause he was taught many things, is a night owl so tends to work at night (which is good for him cause now he can get more of his plans done) and thus getting more sleeping in

Rusty slightly suspicious of him for multiple reasons while Fred is suspicious of Kyle (after he’s separated from the lamp) since Zero mentions a bloke called Proteus many times and say he preferred to call Kyle, plus Kyle’s appearance, Fred puts two together very quickly and is currently trying to get Kyle to wish his spiritual family or get gold dust

Has a notebook containing multiple information on the supernatural occurrence thanks to Tino including things about the other ghosts and gods Tino and Lucy know, is extermely protective of it

Speaking of Alfred hates him for extermely petty reasons but can’t do much cause one Fred doesn’t care and can snark back and two, Tino and Lucy will have his head while destroying his body apart (Alfred still uses it to riled up Tino though and this leads to squabbling something that distresses Fred)

Personality and outfits slightly remain the same, dresses punk-fessional, is nice underneath his cool prickly exterior yet is a tiny bit reckless determined (something that makes Tino feel a twinge on..memories on someone he once knew?) tends to speak out his mind, is very secretive and occasional moments of grumbling laziness, jerk with a heart of gold

* when they first announced Daniel Craig as the new Bond, i remember being skeptical, because the dude was Not Hot and i’m shallow. however, standing here 16 years later, i am now pickin’ up what he’s putting down. like, he’s not viscerally hot, i probably wouldn’t pick him out in a bar... but he’s got this faint air of dirtbaggery and awkward angles and weird ears that i’m kinda into, and his performance sells it well. filthy boy

* it probably helps that he gives off some lowkey sociopath vibes in this movie. the bit where he ditches the chick to tear straight toward Miami was somethin lol

* someone mentioned halfway through the movie that Craig was in Knives Out and. oh my god. i’d totally forgotten. props to those acting chops; dude is inhabiting two wildly different characters to their fullest lol

* fantastic parkour in that opening! love to see dudes jumpin around!!

* similarly, M’s introduction was so GOOD haha. mini-masterclass in How To Exposition. “christ i miss the cold war” and you know everything you need to know about her lol

* ok not to be Overthinky Poker Nerd On Main TM but the poker tournament showdown strained my credulity a bit. like i get this is a Bond movie and i shouldn’t think too hard, but i didn’t quite follow why he needed to go to the tournament at all (this Le Chiffre dude clearly sucks at gambling; why not just let him lose all his money of his own accord), and the whole “drawing out his tell” scene was kinda ham-handed even if you’re willing to bite the bullet and just pretend we’re still playing poker like it’s 1969 lol

* that being said i loved all the stuff around the poker tournament. just casual bathroom break interrupted by assassins nbd, hell yeah

* mads mikkelsen was great as the villain and i loved the unhinged desperation of his final throwdown against bond. kinda wish there’d been more buildup for that, though, like, i didn’t get much of a sense of what kinda dude he was til that moment

also, we actually made it a double feature, so here’s my thoughts on Skyfall as well (technically a rewatch, though i hadn’t seen it since 2012 and had forgotten a lot):

* yeah ok it’s the better movie

* like Casino Royale was good but Skyfall’s just really good

* though admittedly i think Skyfall gets a bit of an unfair advantage because “rugged dude comin back from the dead” and “new tensions in preexisting relationships” are just super compelling threads that you can’t pull off in a “let’s introduce the new dude” movie like Casino Royale

* like, god, that opening’s so tight. the easy camaraderie between Eve and Bond showing us how far he’s come in the Bein A Team Player category, the badass chase scene, all concluded with that ouch act of betrayal... *chef kiss*

* as a real-life professional hacker i can confirm all the hacking in this movie is (1) entirely silly and (2) entirely AWESOME. bond fuckin’ guessin’ passwords by lookin at cool visualizations and showin’ up all the other IT guys! Q’s acerbic hacker ‘tude! “STRIP THE HEADERS TRACE THE SOURCE!” god i love movie hacking so much

* the whole shanghai sequence was simultaneously kinda campy/too-much but also indulgent-fun, s.t. i couldn’t entirely figure out how much i was enjoying it (the komodo dragons eating the guards? really?)... but the glass-building-jellyfish-shootout sequence was MAGNIFICENTLY rad, and

* THE VILLAIN. silva’s so creepy and crazy he’s everything i want in a bond villain and he even manages to do it with the SIGNIFICANT hinderance of being blonde. hell yes

* Home Alone: Spy Shenanigans Edition is everything

Pokemon SV playthrough part 3: from school to bug gym

In this I get spoiled for choice, try to take a picture of a Psyduck, see some new Pokemon, and also do my 1st picnic

So I'm in the school, Nemona was talking to a lady w/ crazy hair. Nemona said her name but I don't remember it. When I asked her who she was all she said was her name as if that told me anything about her. I bet she's a gym leader or something idk.

Then I see Arven (I remember his name now, woo!) And he acts all buddy buddy with me, which is kinda weird considering he wasn't the most friendly in our first meeting. But he tells me how much he loves cooking and that he's trying to get these Herba Mystica things and wants my help, so I say sure. I just gotta battle some big boi Pokemon.

He tells about Great Tusk, and I'm like "Yo that's sick" because it is. I love mysterious stuff. And considering the only visual reference for it is just a drawing and a blurry photo, I really want to know more! I can totally imagine Pokemon Youtube having some youtuber making a vid about it and the tumbnail would be the blurry photo with a big red circle around the Great Tusk.

All this makes me really excited to see what the hell is in the crater. All I know it that it's super dangerous and also that Sada is somewhere in there and that Koraidon is from there.

A bit off topic but a Pokemon Professor OC of mine (Prof. Silverleaf) would be going feral over this sort of thing. The man goes wild over mysteries. He'd probably try to sneak in, lol.

Anyway after Arven, someone hacks my phone. And is like "Hey, fight Team Star for me will ya?" And I'm like "No." because you hacked my phone, and that's rude.

Principal tells me not to take phone calls in the middle of the cafeteria, and I'm like "fair." Anyway I'm a little worried when he mutters "Team Star" under his breath and I get called to his office later. I'm like "Oh no, am I in trouble?" Like maybe he thought I was getting close to Team Star. But it was nothing like that.

Instead Sada shows up and she's like "Hi, that Koraidon used to be mine, but you can have it, take care of it for me, will you?" And I'm like "Sure". Anyway Sada's theme is baller, and I love it. Although aren't I breaking some rule by having 7 Pokemon with me at once, even if I'm not using one to fight?

So Principal clearly knows something. He knows Sada. And is like "Did she actually do it?" And I'm like "Did she do what?" But of course he doesn't tell me. But he 100% knows something.

So Nemona shows me my room and I'm like "Sweet!" because it's not a bad size and I have it all to myself. Then my character goes to bed despite it being daytime. TIMESKIP! Days go by in a cool sky changing cut scene. How many? idk. I didn't count but maybe someone out there in the world has.

Anyway I think it's weird to hold the treasure hunt so early in the school year, it seems like something that should be saved for later. Like an end of school year celebration of sorts, idk. But then again, I guess finals happen around the end of the year, maybe that's enough excitement for the students.

So yeah Nemona's like "go do gym battles!" and Arven's like "fight the titans!" and the hacker's like "fight Team Star" and I'm like "Ladies, ladies, there's enough of me for all of you! You don't need to fight!" It's around this time I realize who the hacker must be.

I thought to myself, here's Arven, here's Nemona, where's Penny? I haven't seen her around. Then I'm like OH she's the hacker isn't she? I mean it makes sense. Team Star did harass her and I was the one who helped her. No wonder she thought of me when she decided to take them down.

So I decide to go after the Bug Gym first at Nemona's suggestion. I quickly get distracted exploring again.

I try to take a photo of a Psyduck swimming in the river, looking like it's a little too close to the waterfall. And I'm like "which is the take-a-picture button?" and by the time I realize it's just the normal screen cap button, the Psyduck is already out of the river and standing right in front of me. And it's like It's cute you want to pose for the photo but I wanted to take a photo of the swimming. bye.

Anyway caught lots of Pokemon. Saw some Pokemon I've never seen before. Like I vaguely knew about various Pokemon even if I didn't know the specifics. But I saw two Pokemon I haven't seen before at all. I figure Tadbulb evolves into the electric frog the gym leader has. The other was a red dog. I've seen fanart of Arven with a dog, I bet this small red dog evolves into that.

I also have a few tera raids, those were cool, they were all rank one of course. I got a Venonat which is cool because I haven't seen regularly in the wild yet.

I wandered into an area that was a bit strong for me and found another Pokemon that was entirely new to me. A psychic type with a bunch of frills. Was a bitch to catch, it kept breaking out of the ball and causing my team some major damage. I also caught various other Pokemon I already knew, like a pair of Rockruffs.

I did my first picnic and made a sandwich free style. I put so much food on it and when I put the break on it, it kinda fell apart. And then I just stuck the little ref flag into the lettuce. It looked more like a salad then a sandwich but none of my Pokemon seemed to mind. My Yarn Spider and Big Grass Cat fell asleep next to each other and I took a photo. Looks like a cat that got tuckered out from playing with a yarn ball.

Another thing, my flamingo kicks major ass. nothing but a tera raid has survived a double kick from it. This one has a major chance of staying on the Team permanently. It's so strong!

Anyway in terms of new Pokemon I also caught Smoliv and the little fairy steel Pokemon. I vaguely knew that the little fairy steel existed because a lot of people up it's final evo on the internet. I might put it on my team, eventually.

Eventually I went to the gym and did the challenge. May I mention it's a little disappointing I can't go into random people's houses now. I mean, it makes sense logically but I miss being able to just walk into people's houses and chat with them, and go through their garbage to see if there's anything there.

The challenge was fun, I hope I'm allowed to do it again just for fun. The giant olive made such a funny sound as it bounced around. It really want to try doing the maze part again because I just battled people for shortcuts (because I like battles) but I want to try the maze for real!

I tried letting my poison Wooper shine for this match. Unfortunately, it fainted while battling Teddiursa, it at least poisoned it. Feels a bit anti climatic to send out a stronger 2nd Pokemon just to do the last but of damage. It would have been nicer to finish it off with Wooper. But anyway I got the bug badge. The gym leader, I don't know her age but she feels like a kindly old woman.

It was at this moment I really felt spoiled for choice, "where do I go next?" I pondered. There was truly an impossible amount of choices but I know I can't really just go wherever I want because of the lack of level scaling.

So I asked Pokecenter lady and she told me to go for the 1st titan next and I said "ok". Guess I'm going to rely on her to help me with this. So next time I'll be fighting that 1st Titan.

“Binary code is a series of zeroes and ones strung together in a specific sequence. On paper, it’s useless. Annoying. Worthless. But put that same string of zeroes and ones into a computer, and suddenly it’s a language far more complex than the human mind can comprehend. I was the same way. The world decided I wasn’t good enough in the physical plane, so I went digital. That’s why I chose the name Binary. And you should be very,” He smirks at the underground hero on the screen, “Very afraid of the reach I have here. Aizawa Shouta.”

Midoriya Izuku is tired of the world treating him like nothing. So he decides to becoming a hacker to show the world that nothing can be anything.

Izuku doesn’t go outside often. Not really. People of the outside world aren’t kind to people like him. But he’s not a shut-in. He does still leave the house when he has to and has no qualms or fears about it. Today is one of those days. He needed a new SD card for some of his hacking projects. He's whistling as he's on his way back from the tech hardware store in his neighborhood with the new SD card in his pocket when CATRA pings him. He pulls a wireless earbud out of his pocket to slip into his ear. "What is it?" He asks.

"There seems to be an altercation occurring nearby," she responds, her voice coming out of the earbud. That's not a surprise. CATRA has a secondary function of hacking the street cameras around him when he’s on the move to see if there's any danger in the direction he's headed.

"What kind of altercation? Heroes? Gang fight?" If so he'll need to find an alternate path to make sure not to draw attention to himself. It's just after school and he's not wearing any kind of school uniform. He’d rather not have any questions directed at himself.

"No. It seems to be between several students from Nabu Middle School. It seems three are ganging up on a single classmate. They are beating him."

Uh oh. That's not good. He pulls up the cameras around the area with a bit of hacking. Sure enough, in a nearby alleyway, three students wearing Nabu Middle School uniforms are wailing on another student. The poor thing just cowers against the wall while covering their head as their classmates laugh and hit them. "Can you get me facial recognition on them?" He says as he switches over to the actual camera app on his phone, switching to the video recorder as soon as it’s open.

"One moment... I have recognition of the three assailants but I cannot catch the victim's face to get recognition. Assailants have been identified as Ide Akihiko, Saiki Kaede, and Ishikawa Kazuki. All are in their third year at Nabu."

"Gotcha. Backup yourself and this video I'm about to start recording to storage. Just in case my phone gets broken in retaliation."

CATRA nods, "Understood. I will also continue to attempt to get facial recognition for the victim."

He rushes into the alley, starting to record. He stays quiet for a moment, just getting a nice recording of these three boys beating on the poor student. When he’s got a good minute of endless assault recorded, he stops it and shouts, “Hey! What the hell do you guys think you’re doing?!”

All three boys jump at the sound of his voice. They turn to him and stare with wide eyes. Eventually, the apparent ring leader of the group grins at him sheepishly, “Hey man! Don’t worry! We’re just doing the world a favor and keeping this villain from committing any crimes!”

The distaste in the other kid’s voice makes Izuku’s lip curl up in a sneer, “Villain?” He scoffs, “Last time I knew, villains obviously don’t wear middle school uniforms. Nor are they committing a crime by sitting fearfully in an alleyway while people beat them up.”

Two of the boys flinch at the sass he gives back, the ring leader scowls, “Obviously he’s a villain. Look, you don’t know him. But we do! He is a villain! We go to school with him! It’s his quirk! Brainwashing! He’s destined to grow up to be a villain because he can control your mind!”

“Really?” he says in a fake nice voice, he then hums out a long sound, “That’s weird. Because the last time I was aware, your quirk doesn’t automatically make you into either a hero or a villain… It was your actions that caused you to be a hero or a villain! You're acting more like a villain than he is after all! In fact, I think that the only reason that he would even become a villain…” His stare becomes harsh, “Is because of people. Like. You.”

The ring leader is shocked at his words. Izuku sees out of the corner of his eye that the victim has peeked out of the safety of his arms up at him. It’s a bright splash of lavender hair and a violet colored eye. What he can see of his arms and face are mottled with bruises. That won’t fly, not for Izuku. He’s going to ruin these bullies.

The ring leader’s friend comes up and places a hand on his shoulder, “H-Hey Kaede, maybe we should just go…?”

Saiki Kaede, apparently, shrugs his friend’s hand off of him - stupidly, in Izuku’s opinion - to scoff, “Like hell man! This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about! I’m going to be a hero after all! Heroes stop villains! Even ones in the making!”

“A hero in the making huh?” He plays the video recording and turns it so the boys can see it, “Would heroes or the police agree that this is a future hero in the making? What about your hero school of choice, hmm? Do you think they would accept someone who does things like this?”

All the boys watched with wide eyes as they mercilessly beat on the other boy, faces smirking tauntingly as the clear victim of assault cowered helplessly against the wall. He stops the video but keeps his phone visible as a warning, “Now. Here’s what’s going to happen. You three are going to turn around to him, apologize to him for both beating him up as you did and calling him a villain, then you are going to run home to your mommies and daddies, not mess with him anymore, and pray that I don’t make good on my threat of releasing this video. Got it?”

The three nodded in understanding. They then turned and bowed to the other boy, apologizing to him. Then they ran off with Izuku watching them with harsh eyes the whole way. He smugly puts his phone back into his pocket. Job well done. He then steps over to the boy and crouches down next to him. The poor guy flinches away from him, as if expecting Izuku to hurt him as well. His face doesn’t fully come out of his arms and knees either. “It’s okay,” Izuku says to him softly, “I promise they won’t bother you again. I’m sorry I didn’t get here quicker. Maybe I could’ve stopped most of the damage if I had gotten here faster…”

It’s quiet as they stare at each other. The other boy slowly raises his hand in a dismissive wave. Izuku tilts his head, worried that maybe they damaged his throat, “What’s wrong? Did they injure your throat? Is that why you can’t talk?”

A slow head shake is his response. Still no words though. Izuku waits, hoping that he’ll explain if he’s patient. His eyes meet and dart away from his own a few times. Then his shoulders untense minutely and he sits up fully. Izuku inhales sharply as he finally sees why he can’t talk. A muzzle. This kid’s been muzzled. “Holy shit!” he yells, reaching up to see if he can get it off.

The guy flinches but doesn’t back away as Izuku’s hands touch the back to try and find a buckle or clasp. His fingers come across a latch but they also come across something much larger. Izuku leans up further to see it. It’s a padlock. “Are you fucking kidding me?” He murmurs, mostly to himself. Purple haired guy’s eyes fall to the ground in shame. Izuku holds out a hand, “No, no! I’m not mad at you! I’m mad at whoever put this thing on you! They’re absolutely insane!”

Two slow blinks and a nod in understanding. Izuku pats his pockets down to see if he has anything he might be able to pick the lock with. He comes up with nothing though and groans in annoyance. Of all the times for him to leave even his small screwdriver at home! … Home! He’ll just take this kid home with him! Wow… that actually sounded creepy… He’ll help this kid at his home. Yeah that sounds a bit better. “Okay! So! I don’t have anything to get that off of you with me but I should at my house! Would you mind coming with me so I can pick that padlock on the back?”

Wide violet eyes blink again, this time in shock before nodding again in acceptance. “Great! Let’s get going then uh… Oh wait… I don’t know your name and you can’t tell me…” He places a finger on his lips to think then face palms himself. He has CATRA. Duh! He pulls his phone back out and holds it out, “Here, hold this for a second.”

The boy takes it curiously as Izuku grins at him, “CATRA, facial recognition on the victim now please!”

A thin eyebrow raises in confusion before blinking in shock as CATRA appears on screen with a meow. His eyes seem to light up with a sparkle as CATRA chirps, through the phone’s speaker this time, “One moment please!”

He smiles as the boy becomes enraptured by the green cyber cat. “Recognition found!” She purrs out happily, bowing her head slightly, “Greetings Shinsou Hitoshi-kun! It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance!”

“Shinsou, huh? Nice to meet you then! I’m Midoriya Izuku! And the cat on my phone’s screen is CATRA. You seem to like her so you can talk to her more when we get that muzzle off of you at my house,” Izuku smiles in a way he hopes is comforting to Shinsou.

Shinsou can’t exactly smile with the muzzle on but his eyes do scrunch a bit in what Izuku assumes is a bit of a smile. Shinsou nods again and, with Izuku’s help, finally stands up. It’s slow going but the walk home is quite peaceful. It probably helps that CATRA was giving them directions to ensure they didn’t run into anyone on the way. Izuku really didn’t want any questions as to why he was helping a heavily bruised and muzzled boy his age back to his apartment. When they finally get there, Izuku unlocks the door and calls for CATRA to turn on the lights.

His computer setup also hums to life as the lights in the house all turn on. Izuku helps Shinsou over to the couch, gently lowering him down onto it. “There you go. Okay now… uh…” Izuku turns to the coffee table and sifts around through the stuff on it. It’s not here. Ugh. “CATRA, where did I leave my bobby pins container?”

“I believe I last saw it on your dresser in your room. Perhaps behind one of your textbooks?” the cyber cat replies, now appearing on one of the computer screens.

Izuku mumbles a thanks, racing into his room to search for the container. Just as she said, it was hidden behind one of his textbooks for his online classes. He first started using them when his hair got too long when he was younger. There was a time just after getting free of his mom when he was still really scared to go out alone. He let his hair go and it got too long, falling into his face every time he was trying to do something. So he ordered the container of bobby pins, the same one now in his hand, to pin his hair back. When he got his confidence up enough to go out and get a haircut by a professional, he still kept them in the event that he accidentally locked something without a key and needed to pick it.

He really needs to remember to find a way to keep them on him at all times. Never know when you’re going to need them out in the field. Like today.

He runs back into the living room, skidding to a stop in front of the coffee table again, “Back!” He snatches up a small screwdriver sitting on it and pulls one of the pins out of the container before moving behind Shinsou. “Okay, it might take me a minute but I should be able to pick this lock and get that thing off of you.”

“Is there anything I can do in the meantime, Izuku-kun?” CATRA asks.

“Yeah,” Izuku says, not looking up from his work, “Start compiling evidence against those boys as well as Nabu middle school and anyone else you can find who’s made attacks or discriminatory actions against Shinsou-kun. Pull cam footage in and around the school, if you can, to see what you can find and keep anything that flags. Verbal and physical altercations both. Once you’ve got it all nice and neat in a file, load it onto one of the empty disks. I haven’t had a chance to go out and buy a new flash drive. So I’ll just have to waste a CD. Also print a label and write up a quick note of our findings for Tsukauchi-san. We’ll stick it in a box with the muzzle and deliver it to him again.”

Shinsou’s head whips around to him in clear shock, causing his arms to bend at an awkward angle to keep hold of the padlock, “Whoa, whoa! Hey, hey! Don’t do that! This isn’t exactly comfortable!”

Shinsou quickly turns back to face front with wide eyes. Izuku sighs in relief as the painful stretch lets up in his arms. He then smiles at him over the top of his head, “You can tell me what’s so shocking when we get this off. Okay?”

Shinsou gives a minute nod and Izuku gets back to work on picking the lock. After several frustratingly long minutes, the lock gives. Izuku makes a sound of triumph and carefully pulls the strap loose. Shinsou gasps out as if he's finally able to breathe when the muzzle is pulled off his face completely. "Thank you," he says sincerely, voice gravely from disuse.

"Of course!" Izuku rounds the couch and crouches in front of him. He winces in sympathy, "Ooh… the muzzle cut into your cheeks. Not to mention those bruises… let me go get the first aid kit. And some ice."

Izuku is quick to move away from him again, going to get all the things he needs. He gets the first aid kit from the bathroom first then moves to the kitchen to make up a couple of bags of ice. As he’s in there, he hears Shinsou ask CATRA, “Why did he help me? I mean… He made you so his quirk must be amazing so why did he help someone like me? Why didn’t he just walk away like all the others with super amazing quirks when he heard that I have a villain’s quirk?”

Izuku stays quiet and smirks. He knows CATRA will sort him out. He gave her a special coding strand that makes her abhor quirk discrimination. She lets out a low growl at the questions, “Firstly, Hitoshi-kun, no quirk has ever been categorized based on whether or not it is a hero’s or a villain’s. There is no such thing as a villain’s quirk just as there is no such thing as a hero’s quirk. Every quirk can be used for good or for ill just like anyone can use a knife the same way. Secondly, Izuku-kun has no quirk. Because of how he’s been treated just for having an extra bone in the smallest toe on his foot, he absolutely does NOT tolerate anyone treating someone differently based on the quirk that they do or don’t have.”

Izuku chooses that moment to rejoin then, “She’s right you know. No one should hate you based on what kind of quirk you have. I mean, at least they have one at all. You wouldn’t believe the kind of stuff I had to put up with sometimes from the school, teachers and students both!”

“But you… don’t anymore?” Shinsou asks, confused.

“Nope! I started online school a few years ago!” Izuku grins then shrugs, “It’s better for me anyway. Regular school didn’t give me the freedom to work at my own pace which I desperately needed in order to strive. Really quick, I’m also going to take a picture of your injuries as they are right now. Just to let you know.” Izuku quickly pulls out his phone and snaps a picture of Hitoshi’s face and arms to note the injuries, then he places one of the bags of ice on his heavily bruised wrist before pulling out a cotton ball and some antiseptic.

“That sounds nice…” Shinsou says quietly, wincing when Izuku dabs as carefully as possible at one of the cuts on his cheek, “Your parents must be amazingly supportive.”

“Oh I don’t have those anymore either.” Shinsou makes a noise of confusion. Izuku gently applies a bandage to one of his cheeks, answering him with, “Parents. I don’t have parents anymore.”

“What? Then who do you live here with…? Like… another family member or something?”

“Nobody. I live on my own. Have since I was about ten.” He moves over to the other cut, repeating the process, “It was a whole legal thing but basically I proved my parents were both horrible people who weren’t doing anything to raise me anyway and that I could live on my own just fine without anyone to constantly supervise me. And that it was safer for me to be on my own. It was kind of like American Emancipation but not quite? I don’t know, you’d have to talk to my lawyer to get all the ins and outs of the legal stuff. He explained it to me once but I was ten at the time and didn’t really get it. Probably would get it now if he explained it again though…”

“You have a lawyer?” Another bandage is applied to the other side of Shinsou’s face before the second bag of ice is placed over his eye.

“Mhmm,” Izuku hums, “I don’t know how much you’ve figured out about me but I’m a hacker, in case you didn’t know.”

“Yeah, I figured that out,” Shinsou says, “Or at least had a guess that you might be based on CATRA.”

Izuku grins at him before sobering back into a more neutral facial expression, “So anyway, back when I was first getting started, my mom, who was awful by the way, decided that she was going to stop sending money to the house to help me pay for food and other things I needed. Her reasoning was something like I wasn’t worth it, maybe? I don’t remember exactly. In order to feed myself, I offered my hacking services to the public if you knew how to find me. Well, a lawyer, Iwai Fumio, reached out to me about his firm partner. He had concerns that his partner was forging evidence to get guilty clients who paid him a hefty enough bribe out of prison time. He was. I found out how and all the cases he had done it for as well as how much he was paid for it each time. Iwai-san brought it to public light and the guy went to prison for it with all assets from their shared firm now solely in Iwai-san’s name. He insisted we meet in person so he could thank me and deliver my pay to me. I agreed because I really needed the money and was worried he would keep the money from me if I said no.”

“And he found out when you two met?”

“Pretty much. I was a ten year old who just showed up to a café to meet with a lawyer to get a paycheck for hacking his ex-partner’s records and cases to find out if the guy was committing fraud. I’m sure you can imagine how surprised and shocked he was. He asked me questions about my home life and I told him.” Shinsou gives him an ‘are you stupid’ look. Izuku waves him off as he’s putting the first aid supplies back in the kit, “Yes I know. But I was ten! It seemed like a good idea at the time for a ten year old me. And it turned out it was. He got me out of my parent’s custody and proved in a court of law that I was better off living on my own based on how the system treats people like me. Someone still had to be listed as my guardian, which Iwai-san listed himself thankfully, but it’s more of an ‘in case of emergency’ guardian.”

“What happens if someone comes along and like… wants to adopt you or something? And it is a really good fit for you?” An odd question from Shinsou but Izuku’s heard weirder.

“I mean yeah I guess they could,” Izuku shrugs, he takes a moment to snap another quick set of photos of Shinsou’s now treated injuries, “There’s nothing saying that if someone suited to raise me the rest of the way to adulthood came along that I couldn’t be adopted by them. I think? I’d have to talk to Iwai-san to know for sure. Now you though!”

“Me?” Shinsou points to himself.

“Yes you! There’s too many questions that I have to ask. Especially if I’m taking all this to the police.”

“You’re actually going to the police with it? I thought you told those assholes that you wouldn’t tell on them if they apologized to me and left me alone?”

“Uh, no! I was always going to the police with it. I just said that to make them listen to me and let them think they had a chance. Anyways! The muzzle? Where did it come from?”

Shinsou stays quiet, eyes downturned. Izuku waits patiently for him to pick the conversation back up, knowing it might take him a little bit of time to get his thoughts in order. “Um…” Shinsou’s voice is quiet when he finally does speak, “The school puts it on me. They think my quirk is a villain’s quirk too so they make me wear it during school hours. Less chance of me taking control of people that way.”

“And your parents? What do they think of this?”

Shinsou chuckles, but it’s bitter, “Foster parents actually… they’re the ones that supply the school with them. Anytime it breaks, they buy a new one to donate to the school. They have one at home too. In case I get too… ‘aggressive’ towards them. My social worker doesn’t care either. She thanked my foster parents for coming up with the idea and said that if they ever gave me up she would start supplying them to all my new homes. `Less of a risk that way,’ she said.”

Izuku takes a deep breath to stave off the overwhelming rage he’s feeling. “I hate people, I swear. CATRA, ignore everything I said about the label for a box! We’ll have Iwai take everything since it’s clear we’ll have to get him involved. Okay… So… I’m going to have you record everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, you’ve gone through on a sheet of paper, in writing. And we’ll send that in too along with the video evidence. Uh… but there’s also no way in hell that I’m letting you go back to that foster home so…” Izuku thinks for a moment before lighting up with a bright smile, “So you’ll just stay here!”

“Stay… here?”

“Yeah! With me! The apartment has two rooms after all! Oh but the second room doesn’t have any furniture in it right now so I’ll have to order some. But we can make it your room!”

Shinsou blinks, “You would… Want me here with you? Even knowing what you do about me?”

“Well yeah! You’re not going back into the system. Not if I have anything to say about it!” Izuku moves to his bedroom, leaving the door open so Shinsou can still hear him, “I’ll get you a piece of paper or five and a pencil! As soon as you’re done writing everything down, and again I mean everything, then you can come in here and catch some sleep! You look like you need it!”

“What about you? Don’t you need to sleep too?” Shinsou calls back.

“Yeah but I won’t be able to for a while! I’ve got a lot to do! Don’t worry about me though! I’ll be fine! I don’t have to worry about any new assignments for school until next semester anyway!” He tears several sheets of paper out of one of his unused notebooks and grabs a pencil. He brings them out and hands them to the purple haired boy, “Besides, I’ve got to call Iwai-san so he can start making a case for you! I’m sure by the end of this week or maybe the end of next week at most, we’ll have you living here full time! Iwai-san doesn’t play when it comes to the safety of kids!”

“You really don’t mind if I stay? If I live with you?” Shinsou’s voice sounds rough as tears well up in his eyes.

“Of course not! I’d be happy to have you here!” Izuku smiles brightly at him, “I know we’ve just met, Shinsou-kun, but I’ve been through what you’ve gone through. Maybe not to your level of extreme but I know what it’s like for people to treat you differently because of something you can’t control. I wished more than anything during that time that someone would reach out and help me but in the end they didn’t and I ended up having to help myself. I want to be that someone who reaches out to help you. So you don’t have to find a way to help yourself like I did. I’ve always wanted to be a hero. Let me be yours, Shinsou Hitoshi.”

That’s all it takes for the dam to break. Shinsou curls into himself as he sobs, one hand raising to cover his eyes as the ice pack that was over his black eye falls into his lap. Izuku easily moves his hands over to rest on the other boy’s back and shoulder, offering him some comfort without crowding him. He knows Shinsou probably has never had that before and doesn’t want to overwhelm him yet. Maybe at some point in the future he’ll be able to offer more than just this. Perhaps a hug and a shoulder to cry on. For now, he’ll have to let Shinsou get used to his presence as something not out to get him like he probably expects from every human he comes across.

When the tears finally cease, Shinsou starts working on writing down his statement of everything that’s happened to him, both at his foster home and at school. Meanwhile Izuku pulls his keyboard into his lap and gets to work, himself. First, figuring out again how he’s going to get all this evidence to Detective Tsukauchi through Iwai-san without raising suspicion. sollux: incredible perfection amazingness my sun my shining star. ok so basically he got ZERO screentime in canon despite being objectively one of the coolest characters. hes like. a hacker and a little shit but he saves everyones lives multiple times. thats him.

gamzee: i know some people like him but. mm. :/. basically he is a murderous juggalo. hes doped up all the time but once he gets sober he murders a large portion of the cast. so that happens.

feferi: princess! shes either super sweet or very white knighty/privileged. i honestly havent figured it out yet. she didnt get a lot of canon screentime so

nepeta: CAT GIRL oh my god she deserved to live. oh precious sweet nepeta. she draws shipping charts and likes to roleplay as a cat.

eridan: he was a bitch and flirted with everyone who looked at him (and some who didnt). typically hes hated on but ive come around to him more recently since he was pretty young and rereading some of his dialogue is tragic.

equius: hated by most people because in canon hussie uses him mostly for bestiality jokes and jokes about getting off to the idea of authority. i love him though i think he didnt deserve it. if you get a chance watch equius's pesterquest route he is a sweetheart actually. a weirdo but a sweetheart.

the clones bit is actually easy to understand, every character is a clone. they are all paradox clones as in they were never born and they were just cloned from themself via time magic. as for the time travel shit yeah that is confusing as fuck.

there's a popular fanon that john transitions into a girl called june. the author agreed to represent this in canon but then literally never did and the fans who wanted june were robbed. so trans john (june) isn't canon, but she's very popular and pretty cool. personally i don't mind either way.

Mike comes out to El , Mileven breaks up for good, and the future of byler (s4 theory)

*this is based off the stranger things movie inspirations they listed on twitter , in the show, or in interviews/other outside materials. All movies mentioned have been said to be inspo for the show.

So I’ll be mentioning mostly the movies- sw*ngers, what women want, wet hot american summer and splash (and others). Along with Tootsie -which was shown in s4 bts.

Before I give a rough outline of what may happen. I have to specify I don’t think El will be “heartbroken” over mileven cause I don’t think she loves Mike romantically . I’ve already discussed why i think she doesn’t love him romantically at nauseam - but regardless mileven brings out the worst in El and Mike. And literally inhibits her character growth. So as an El fan- I’m super excited for mileven to be put to rest. SORRY. I’ll trade El & Kali teaming up to get closure from their ab*ser ...over mileven any day of the week XD.

I think Mileven broke up in s3 (and remained broken up) . But we’ll have more closure and a more official breakup in s4 when Mike visits the byers. (And Mike admits he’s gay to his ex )- before byler officially begins. Essentially, I think- Mileven broke up, but El still calls constantly .And Mike starts ignoring her calls so El demands an explanation and he admits to her he’s gay and doesn’t want to get back together.

So first lets talk about Phone calls

I think based off the movies and s3 we’ll see El call quite a bit in s4 (almost obsessively) . And Mike has had enough. In s3, he said he’ll call so often -she’ll have to turn her walkie off . But I believe it’ll be the opposite-with El calling so much he’ll turn it off.

We see foreshadowing for this in s3 when Mike hangs up the phone after saying “El ? no, sorry, not interested.” Or when he hangs up on her multiple other times that season ( he even technically hung up the walkie on her in s2 , as well ). But, in defense of El, given her lack of socialization (and seeing mike call her constantly between s1-2 I wouldn’t be surprised if she thought this was the norm).

-In splash there’s a scene similar to s3 - a blond relative picks up another phone to eavesdrop on him talking to his gf. He yells at the blonde relative and when the gf asks if he loves her -he tries to dodge the question. But they break up and he admits to his relative he never loved her. Maybe confessing to Karen?

* This reminds me of that supposed rumor with El saying “I love you” and Mike not into El just saying “I know” in return.Or Mike in s3 saying quickly “i miss you-bye.” And immediately hanging up on her.

-some other aspects of the s3 breakup may be taken from “pineapple express .Which had comedic breakups via phone . When broken-up he says “I love you “ and she says it back to him (like mileven). He IMMEDIATELY says he takes it back and “I made a mistake” (when he sees she took him seriously). And then he specifies that’s it’s because she’s must be too “ naive and immature” to willing to take him back after how horrible of a bf he was to her in the past. Which yeah -fits mileven: they said the ‘L word’ when broken up, Mike did immediately try to take it back , and he may have realized at the s3 finalie how naive el was -to still want him back despite him not being a good bf to her. In ‘p.i’ the girl’s mom even says maybe it’s best she find someone new who actually appreciated her or ‘better yet just be single’ and hang out with her gal pals (lol if joyce gave this advice to El-that’d be great)! El doesn’t need romance to be her own-happy person! Also in ‘p.i’ Dale + his male bff are always assumed to be gay for eachother as a running gag .So ... I’ll technically throw that as another byler hint- lol.

-In sw*ngers Michael (yes that’s his name) who is made fun of for being perceived as gay gets a call from his ex gf of 6 months). And he hangs up on her to talk to his other love interest who asks if he wants to see her. Michael (specifically hangs up on his ex as she says “I lo-” to talk to this new love interest. He later brags to his friend (at a dinner) about not calling her back (despite her wanting to get back together) and he says proudly she was “always his ex”- when his friend incorrectly calls her his “gf” .

-While in ‘what women want’- an ex gf goes to him cause he didn’t answer her calls. In ‘tootsie’ the gf does the same and is pissed that her bf Michael (yes, yet another michael) didn’t answer her calls for a week. And he LIES saying his answering machine was broken. Would not be surprised if mike made up such an excuse.

Similar to ‘tootise’ & in ‘what women want’-both gals who’s phone calls were ignored ask if their bf (in mileven’s case -ex bf ) is gay. And in ‘swingers’ someone makes fun of mike for being gay. too Lol-i’m sorry 2 movies where a guy named Mike is called out for being gay /and 2 movies where a gf who’s phone calls are ignored asks is they’re bf is gay is suspish XD

In ‘tootsie’. We also have movie-mike give her a present before she asks if he’s gay /they breakup -it echos what previously happened in s3.

- Michael (from the film) despite not want to be with her anymore (and loving someone else) tries giving her a gift to patch things up - despite his lying/ignoring her. The gift /empty gesture annoys her. Which is similar to st- mike not apologizing for lying- but trying to give El a gift to make up with her (but he doesn’t even do as much as film-Mike).

Right after this is when she asks if he’s gay (aka so for mileven we have the gift scene for s3 & El asking if he’s gay in s4-which were both borrowed from ‘tootsie’).

In ‘tootsie’, she finds romantic letters Michael has from another guy and this causes her to ask him if he’s gay .(20+ movies have romantic letters). In ‘littlewomen’ the artist gal and her future husband (who used to have a crush on the painter’s sis) exchange letters.And in ‘wet hot american summer’- a guy ditched his friends to write a letter (and his friends make a gay joke about him because of his letter writing-not knowing he’s actually gay.

In ‘what women want’ when confronted- he admits he’s gay to his ex gf. In ‘tootsie’ she asks if he’s gay and he avoids the question but after she demands that he be “truthful for once in your life”. And, we all know how Mike constantly “lied” to EL .michael finally says he’ll stop lying to her and admits he’s in love with someone else.

And she says in turn she’s not angry he doesn’t love her but that he lied (and similar to s2 where Mike calls Hopper a “liar”. The ex gf calls movie-mike a “liar” over and over). In fact they use the identical phrase of “you liar. you liar.”

Not to mention- she does sound like El. She says she’s more upset about the lying than the fact movie-mike doesn’t love her.

But I do think they eventually get closure and El realizes she doesn’t love Mike (romantically either) before her real character/story arc begins.

movies: twister & you got mail

I’m so ready for the El & Kali teamup in s4. It’s like s2 (we get El & Kali pursuing Brenner + byler moments).

But what happens before Mike says this?I assume before this -mike & Will may confide in others about their feelings. And Mike/Will may be bullied for being perceived as gay .

-In “welcome to the dollhouse” a boy is bullied for being seen as gay in school & at an arcade- and a character who is made fun for being a lesbian defends him at school/the arcade (so maybe robin?)Since Robin works next to the arcade/is gay. Similarly, Fin’s character (at an arcade) is bullied and called a “fairy” and f*g” in ‘It 2′. And movie-Mike is made fun of for being perceived as gay in ‘sw*ngers’. Along with the guy (who was gay) being called homophobic names for writing letters (in wet hot american summer).We also know hawkins will most likely have a ‘satanic panic’ over d&d, rock music, and other things- which was historically rooted in christian fundamentalism.In ‘Kingsmen’ the churchgoers pretty much go on a rant being hom*phobic, r*cist, anti-science, anti-athe*st, anti-other religions, and anti-democrat and equate all of these groups of people to the endtimes/the anti christ. So one guy just snaps and says he’s gay, loves science , etc and says after “so... hail satan .And have a lovely day.”And storms out. lol not sure about all that -but it’d be hilarious XD. Trigger warning for hom*phobic sl*rs.

-Proof For Will was : In ‘heathers’ the jocks make fun of the new guy in the cafeteria- by asking him if he misses his boyfriend and call him the f-sl*r .in ‘superbad’ the guy who draws is called hom*phobic sl*rs and in ‘wedding crashers’ someone calls the male-painter character a “homo”. In “hackers” the (computer-nerd) who just moved to town is asked by his single mom if he “likes girls”.etc

Also, in “The guest” a computer-nerd in highschool is bullied for being perceived as gay (and he’s given really bad advice about how to deal with it by a lonnie-esque character who is visiting his house/family for a while). The advice is also similar to the advice given in the st comic (from Troy’s dad).

Honestly just the fire ref makes me nervous. The computer-boy eventually snaps (after never standing up for himself) and beats up his homophobic bullies.

*whenever Lonnie comes back - I assume we’ll see he’s a bad influence on Will pretty quickly

In ‘the guest’ they also made a joke that the clearly older guest must be the gay highschoolers’ boyfriend (which is not the case).

While In ‘stoker’ ,the highschool painter eventually loses it after dealing with constant harrassment- and stabs the bully’s hand (to block a punch coming their way) after the bully made an inc*st joke about the painter & the family guest. So a joke like that could certainly cause Will to finally snap (as opposed to the other gay jokes they used earlier). In ‘dukes of hazzard’ a guy also snapped and got into a fight over a inc*st joke (and in ‘girl interrupted” they make a similar messed up inc*st joke).

Given my theory on Will’s trauma with his dad (which he doesn’t remember)-I would not be surprised even on a subconscious level such a comment finally gets him to snap -maybe accidentally unleash his powers for the first time?Lonnie could say something about how Will should light his bullies on fire, they make a triggering joke about Lonnie &himself... and Will the wise does have fire powers after all. In the film ‘firestarter’ the kid who couldn’t control their fire abilities also lights a bully on fire accidentally so... maybe? In ‘skyhigh’ Will’s superpowers aren’t revealed until he accidentally unleashes them on a bully in the lunchroom. And 1 character in that scene says “don’t talk about my dad” before using his fire powers. Also... it’s not on the inspo list technically but the Duffers are known avengers/xmen fans.So Will could be based on scarlet witch’s son William (code name Wiccan) - he’s gay ,has lightning&fire powers and can alter reality. He’s been possessed In the past by the ‘demiurge’ - even spit up a slug too. He opens a portal to his world allowing the inter dimensional monster “mama” out (cough demogorgans are called “deep father”.) And he’s constantly bullied for being gay- and the 1 time he finally decides to stand up to his h*mophobic bullies- is the day his powers activate for the first time and almost k*ll the bully. Not super confident in this theory but thought I’d mention it just in case. Ok- this post is supposed to not be too plot heavy. So back to byler-

*Before Mike visits they may both confide in people about their feelings for the other . in skyhigh (at a dinner similar to the convo in sw*ngers where Mike talks about his ex gf) the bff of Will (yes his name) goes on and on about Will and how she’s known him since the first grade. And someone asks “so you’ve been in love with Will since the 1st grade?” Which she tries denying but quickly admits is true. And her friend says she should confess to Will.

In fisher king - a women who works at a videostore tries setting up 2 people- a gal-writer and a guy with an alternate personality/ who hallucinates a fearsome mythical creature (obviously Will). When people doubt the idea the girl can love this mentally ill guy she says “stranger things have been known to happen.” And in “altered states” the guy who would hallucinate flashing to another hell dimension (like Will)- has a wife. And people say “she’s crazy about him and he’s crazy.” When they weren’t together she says to her friend she had to pretend anyone she dated was him and she says “it’s crazy” in response the friend says “i think that’s how it’s supposed to be.” Plus in fisherking one character wrote a book dedicated to his wife (which had the same title as the movie they’re in) . And someone says about this author “ he was crazy about her” as he holds the novel in his hands.

* The ‘pretending the person you’re dating is someone you’re actually in love with’ was also mentioned in ‘children of paradise’ (reffed by Robin in s3).

*I’ve also talked about Mike projecting his feelings for Will to El-here.

Will confiding in someone is harder to say. in ‘reality bites’ when asking about why she doesn’t want to be involved in romance a friend asks “because of Michael?” Which she first denies but later admits is part of the reason.

And in ‘hellboy’, (while taking pics) John Myers tells the fire wielding character (with mental health issues) that her bff is in love with her and asks how she feels . The 2 bffs are endgame but at first she tells John that she’s unsure because she’s known him practically her whole life (but she thinks of him everyday).

Lol not sure if Jonathan would ever be so straight forward but it’d be nice callback to s1/2 convos they had (Jon saying in s1 to not like things cause you’re supposed to / saying being a “freak” like queer david bowie is cool) .In “twister” & “it’s a wonderful life” a family member also tells a character that their childhood friend that they’re in love with (isn’t into the person they’re currently with). In ‘ wonderful life’ she says they’re “not crazy” about the other person-but them. And they say they know this cause they “have eyes.” And In “twister” the family member says them visiting them is proof they love them.

*plus Sam who is supposedly crazy about her (also isn’t crazy about marry). Aka El isn’t crazy about Mike- but Will assumes she (along with mike). Cough El saying “what makes you crazy?” in s3.

-While in “hackers’ the kid (with a single mom) who is into computers, and upset they were forced to moved to a new city -is asked by the mom “Do you like girls?” . And he angrily denies and says he’s ‘not gay’ (which could followthrough with what happened in s3- Will not opening up to her about romance, like him telling Joyce he’d never fall in love. so he may lie to her if asked that question? Unlike Jon?

So it’s possible Will confides in Jonathan (and or Joyce) & maybe Mike to his mom/nancy?/a friend (maybe Robin or Max) (hard to say). My top guesses are Will &Jon. And Mike with Robin (and maybe his mom or sister a bit after Robin?)

Mike visiting the Byers

In ‘Tootsie’, michael (disguised as a woman named dorothy...long story XD) meets up with the person he really loves and gives them a present. The 2 low-key have like a psuedo-gay courting for most of the movie (before they get together). In ‘paddington 2′, the main character even gets multiple jobs to save up for a birthday present for a loved one (another contrast to mileven- who Mike,despite being rich couldn’t even spend $3.50 on. They did that alot -show contrasts with both ships .So s4 would be no different.And It’s Will’s b-day in s4 after all so Mike getting Will a present makes the most sense.

*last pics from ‘scarface’- I have no idea what he’d get Will for his b-day but if it’s engraved with “crazy together” I will lose my mind. Also the parent glaring during this scene-makes me suspect Lonnie . I do suspect Lonnie will sabotage byler-but it may end up being a s5 plotpoint instead of s4? (I guess in s4 it could be El-since el has been known to get very jealous in the past (like with max).

- In ‘waynes’ world’ the ex gf refused to accept the breakup initially (despite it being months ago). And she didn’t understand how breakups worked . Which given El’s lack of socialization - I get her confusion on the concept. Like how in s3 Max had to correct El that Mike was her “ex boyfriend”. In the film, she even tried giving him a present for their ‘anniversary’ (hopefully El doesn’t try to do something like that out of jealousy of the prior gift giving -cause Wayne just says the gift shows how little she knows him).

*You have to admit this scenario of Mike having to explain breakups isn’t that far-fetched.

(even when broken up with wayne- she wore a necklace with his name on it. ) Which reminds me of How El had a bunch of Mike related stuff in her room-including things that said “mike” on them.

in waynes’ world: The ex gf would follow her ex and still refer to him as her bf and be a 3rd wheel and interrupt every attempt for wayne to romantically confess to his new love interest (like in ‘dumb and dumber’/’high fidelity ‘).A similar scenario also happens in ‘tootsie’- Michael (as dorothy) almost confesses (on a swing set) but is interrupted by another person interested in him (Mike). Personally, I assume El would just do this unintentionally- assuming Mike wants to be with her and being a bit pushy but probably being oblivious of byler.

Not to mention the Duffers are petty AF and probably got annoyed with all the jokes that Will was a 3rd wheel to mileven- when literally Will wasn’t even around the 2 interacting alone . A 3rd wheel- has a group of 3 consisting of a couple and a third superfluous person. Which never really happened? Plus,we saw the ‘burns’ they did of mileven over the past 3 seasons- it’ll probably get worse.

And again we already know El had no qualms spying on her ex (mileven even dances to ‘every breath you take’ a song about a stalking ex gf).And El also watched the ‘all my children’ ep with Erica & mike roy. Which in the show after their breakup - had 1 of them refuse to accept the other didn’t love them and want to get back together- and stalk them/ sabotage their exe’s romantic pursuits. Only to eventually accept reality and move on. Although, I think this is mostly un-intentional on El’s part.

In ‘clueless’ she flirted with a gay guy who she thought was straight/in love with her and kept trying to make a move-much to his discomfort . And in ‘birdcage’ the ex gf would hit on her gay ex bf- and his male partner catches the 2 and misinterprets it as not one sided ). That scenario happens in quite a few movies. I could see Will (before byler happens/mike tells el the truth ) misinterpreting and assuming mike and El are still romantically connected or will get back together .

New Swings scene (almost confession)/possible swing-flashback

Ok back to (tootsie) .In the film,Michael’s love interest was raised by an older sibling- and he even tries to confess to her when they’re on a bench swing together . Not even the only movie with a gay gal character + gal bestfriend swinging on a bench together (’silkwood’ ). In ‘enter the void’ there was also a flashback of a little kid asking the other “do you love me?”/ and him saying “a lot” .

* it’s like a subversion of what happened in s3 at the hospital. Also like the Wayne’s world scene of the ex gf interrupting...

But i don’t think El will be the only one trying to get mileven back together. But Will as well.In ‘Emma’ & ‘clueless ‘ :character A assumes her guy friend is into their mutual friend and tries to get them together (despite him being into character A only). I could see Will misinterpreting mileven and trying to be a good friend and get them back together (despite his own feelings). In ‘emma’ and ‘clueless’ (before they fight) there’s is a party/dance (it’s in a lot of movies).It’s possible mike, Will, and El go somewhere to dance - a lot of films have the 2 people in love-dance with others -but stare at eachother the entire time.In ‘clueless’ 2 gay guys and cher (who is flirting with one of the gay guys) all dance together. In karate kid, referenced by Max to El. Has a guy kiss his ex without her permission (on the dance floor)- and the karate kid sees the girl he likes being kissed by her ex and misinterprets the scenario (assuming they’re back together). I suppose the fact they changed the s2 script where Will was watching Mike dance with El may come back up in a later season? Could also be a callback to when Mike looked mopey at Will dancing with a girl (after encouraging him to dance with her). Will could do the same (as mike in s2). Or they both stare at eachother while dancing with other people. or it’s just a concept they scrapped- it’s hard to say.

Confession & fall out

In ‘emma’ & ‘clueless’: character A (after the dance party) goes with the guy home and he tries kissing her . She dodges it confused saying he’s mistaking her for her friend! And he explains he was never romantically interested in her friend. In ‘emma’ he even bought her a super expensive gift before hand and she still assumed he was into her friend not her. And he even specifies in Emma- the reason he came to visit her house was for her (not her friend). A similar scenario happens in ‘weird science’ and he says she just thought of the gal he used to be infatuated with as a “sister” (and we all know the sibling parallels in mileven). And in ‘little women’- the artist gal dodges a kiss and says to her love interest “I won’t be courted with someone in love with my sister.” And he explains exasperated he doesn’t love her sister- despite constantly trying to be with her sister previously.

In ‘tootsie’, what caused Mike (dressed as Dorothy) to try and kiss her was- the other gal saying she feel like she wants something she can’t have and because of that -their friendship makes her feel lonely (it’s very queer coded dialogue). She dodged mike/dorothy’s kiss but then says she has the same (gay) “impulses” as Dorothy but that she’s not mentally sound enough to be in a relationship. A thought that may cross Will’s mind.

But, before they can talk about the almost kiss-her dad calls via phone and interrupts. (They eventually do get together though). But she tells Mike/Dorothy she ‘can’t love’ her,before this.

*may not come across in photos-but she’s crying when sayin this.

Also, a fight about “what they are-friends/or romantic” before a phone call interrupts ( happens in ‘it’s a wonderful life’ and ‘the fisher king’ too.) Those pairings were also both endgame. In wonderful life the artist gal yells why he even came to visit her . And he implies she knows why (aka his romantic feelings) .There’s a similar convo in ‘fisher king’ (asking why they’re there) + 1 of them saying it’s “bullshit” and “stupid” to pretend they’re ‘just friends’. (We all know the context of the phrases “bullshit’ and “stupid” by now). Even Han implies Leia wants him to stay cause he has feelings for him-which she denies . Thus, irritating him.

*(I’ve already mentioned before how in s1 byler was paralleled to a gay Han/leia while mileven was directly paralleled to luke/leia-mentioned this in the ‘mileven burn’ hyperlink).

All 3 movies have eventual couples arguing cause 1 character (mike) is saying he’s done pretending to be just friends and he came to visit (Will) for that reason. And he knows Will returns those romantic feelings- but Will refuses to stop the charade and admit his true feelings.

In ‘good Will hunting” a similar event happens. Will (yes that’s his name) is poor and has severe trust /psych issues caused by his ab*sive dad. And he has “abandonment issues” so sabotages his romantic relationships before they can even begin. When the brunette admits her feelings for him he dismisses it as a phase/confusion on her part. She in response says she knows he finds the idea she doesn’t love him ‘scary’ (and she’s scared too but at least she’s trying and being honest about her feelings). She also says she wants to “help him” with his issues -but this just angers him more. Cause he doesn’t liked being pitied/treated like he’s broken . She says she wants to help because she loves him- not pity. But he doesn’t believe her romantic confession. And every time she says she loves him he yells “Don’t BULLSHIT ME”! So when she yells “say you don’t love me?” He says he doesn’t love her- which the audience knows is a lie. But she’s left a sobbing mess alone on the floor.

Which yikes- I feel like even if you don’t understand the obvious reasons Mike used El as a beard + lied saying he loved her. You’ll feel bad at the possibility of how badly it blows up in his face. Will not believing his confession/thinking Mike loves El or scared he’ll change his mind -so Will (for that + a myriad of other reasons)just rejects Mike COLD. Similar to clueless & Emma & empire strikes back.

I’m not that surprised since Will claimed he’d never fall in love (so when he does - he may just deny it). Like the therapist said in ‘good will hunting’ he’s afraid it’ll go wrong so never even tries to begin a romance. I hypothesize a lot of stuff happens after this, that makes getting closure on their relationship in s4 difficult.

So essentially to summarize a rough idea of what may happen: mileven stayed broken up. Mike and Will probably exchange letters between seasons. And El and Mike call eachother- but the excess of calls becomes too much. Mike and Will are probably bullied for being perceived as gay- and before meeting up they may or may not confide in someone (about their mutual feelings). Mike visits for Will’s b-day/spring break and gives Will a present. El (because she sees Mike as a source of comfort) tries getting back together with him and becomes pushy and a 3rd wheel. While Will even helps El- thinking he’s being a good friend to Mike (by trying to get them back together). Mike eventually comes clean and come to an understanding and El goes on her plot/character driven arc of trying to find Brenner with Kali. Mike eventually confesses to Will but Will for a myriad of reasons lies about loving Mike- and rejects him. And that’s all the (non supernatural) plot stuff I wan’t to talk about now...

Sorry, if this post was just hard to understand. I wouldn’t call this a ‘theory’ per say ( I usually feel more confident in those). This is more like a rough idea given what we have available to analyze so far.

Personally - I hated the mileven/couple breakup drama in s3. So as long as it doesn’t last long and most breakups like say-lumax and jancy happen early in the season... and don’t drag the actual supernatural plot/character developement . I’ll be fine.

Contrary to popular belief- I’m a byler shipper who’s most excited for the actual plot. I’m a bit more confident in my plot theories than the exact details in this post . But I thought I’d share XD. I’ll eventually do a whole s4/5 theory- post which will focus on other characters/supernatural plot points.(but i may rewatch some movies first) . I’ll probably also do a byler post too with s5 predictions (which connects more heavily to important plot points spanning across s4-5).

Infinity Stones AU: Face your Fears, Part 1

I apologize for nothing. Enjoy.

Yusaku took a sharp breath in, coughing as he tried to make his lungs work again. For a moment it felt like he was back in that white room, alone and only a voice for company. Looking around, he tried to piece together the events of the past few minutes. Yusaku did recall that they had joined the Avengers on a retrieval mission and had infiltrated the warehouse but then he was drawing a blank.

“Ai...can you tell me what just happened...Ai?”

Yusaku was puzzled when he didn’t hear Ai respond right away and looked down at his Duel Disk, and spotted the Ignis with tears running down his face.

“AI?!” Now Yusaku was worried, Ai had never cried before.

“Yusaku….” Ai’s voice was quiet, and he had also not used any of his nicknames for Yusaku, “I hope that was all fake....”

“Fake?”

“Nevermind…” Ai shook his head, “That stone of yours seemed to break whatever that lady did to you.”

Yusaku raised an eyebrow, “Lady?

Ai took the opportunity to explain, “Some lady came in and hit you with this red stuff then everyone started screaming. You just kind of froze but after that I’m not sure as I started seeing stuff as well…”

Yusaku quickly put his theory together. First, they had been ambushed by an unknown enemy. Second, it seemed like she had the ability to cause hallucinations most likely based on fears. Third, it seemed that the Mind Stone could reverse the effects which is why he felt fine now even with how brief his vision was.

“We need to locate everyone else…” Yusaku got up and surveyed the room, “They must still be under the effects of that attack.”

“Good luck with that…” Ai muttered, “They all ran off in different directions attacking anything in sight…”

“Then we’ll just have to be careful……” Yusaku stated as he ran off in his chosen direction.

The first person he found was Yugi. Thankfully he didn’t seem to be lashing out at anything and was just leaning against the wall but judging by the red haze over his eyes, he was still under the effects of the hallucination.

“Yugi!” Yusaku grabbed the smaller boy’s shoulder and gave it a good shake, “Yugi snap out of it!”

Yugi just continued to stare blankly ahead.

“Might have to do this the hard way…” Ai pointed to the Mind Stone.

“Afraid so…let’s just hope Yugi makes it easy….” Yusaku said as he placed the Mind Stone against Yugi’s forehead letting its power do its thing. Reality around Yusaku and Ai but Yusaku knew he was just now entering Yugi’s mind, and hopefully to find out just what he was seeing.

What he did see did not make any sense. Everything around them was dark and foggy obscuring anything that could be approaching. Yugi was no longer on the ground but suspended in the air by an invisible force gripping onto his wrist and ankles. But the most shocking part was that Yugi’s knee and elbow were missing and other parts of his body were slowly dissolving away.

“Th-this is bad!!!!” Ai cried out, “What kind of madman thinks of doing messed up stuff like this!?!”

“A sick one fore sure….”

Yusaku spun around and he was quite sure if it was relief or worry when he spotted Yugi’s other self, Yami, slowly pulling himself along the ground. He wasn’t looking good judging by the blood dripping from his mouth.

“Yugi’s had nightmares about this duel….” Yami panted trying to catch his breath, “I’ve tried to snap him out of it but…” Yami seemed to cough up more blood, “I’m not doing too good either…”

“I’ll warn you, it’s going to be a shock to the system….” Yusaku clenched the Mind Stone tighter, “I don’t think we have the time to ease him out of it…” Yellow light blinded everyone as Yusaku just focused on making the vision end quickly. Within the blink of an eye, they were back in the warehouse. The red haze was gone from Yugi’s eyes and he was checking himself over as if to see if his body was whole again.

“Doing okay?” Yusaku found himself asking.

“I-I think so...,” Yugi said with shaky breath, “What was that?”

“My guess is that we were hit with something that makes us hallucinate our worst fears. The Mind Stone snapped me out of it rather quickly and you were the first one I found still under the effects.”

“What about the others?” Yugi asked.

“Not sure but we better stay on our guard…” Yusaku said, “Who knows if anyone can tell friend from foe right now….”

They found Yusei next who thankfully was also not lashing out. Yusaku found him in a vision of a destroyed city but it ended on its own the moment Yusei spotted Yusaku. The hacker wished he could be grateful for the quick conclusion but Yusei had spent at least five minutes hugging Yusaku and Yugi tightly as he could.

“Sorry about that…” Yusei explained as he composed himself, “I know that future will never happen but still...I just needed reassurance that you were alright.”

Yuya was the next one they found. He seemed to have snapped out of it on his own but the room he was in was completely trashed. Yuya was hugging his knees in the center of the room but his dull stare made it hard to figure out exactly who was in the driver seat.

Yugi carefully knelt down next to Yuya and began trying to talk to him, “Yuya...can you tell us what happened here?”

“Yuto actually…” So it seemed that Yuya wasn’t the one in control right now. “Yuya is still processing his panic attack. Yuri buried himself somewhere in our subconsciousness and Yugo is giving all of us a headache by yelling at our bad memories.”

“Sheesh...what’s gotten all four of you worked up?” Ai asked.

“Our past….” That’s all Yuto was going to say on it as he just sat in silence until Yuya came back to the surface.

“I think I hurt Yuma earlier…” Yuya said when he finally came back out, “I’m not sure but I think I heard him crying in pain…”

“What ever happened was not your fault…” Yusei said as he squeezed Yuya’s hand, “It’s not any of our faults.”

“The real fault lies with that woman who attacked us…” Yusaku said with renewed determination, “Let’s find the others.”

Things started to get complicated when they finally found Yuma. The young boy had one of his swords in hand which was strange to the others as they thought he had to be fused with Astral to summon them. Yuma was swinging the weapon around in a panic while crying out…

“Give Astral back!!!! Just leave us alone!!”

Yusaku wasted no time in using the Mind Stone to bring the group into Yuma’s vision. They found Yuma surrounded by creatures made out of crystals and rock or some sort of black sludge. Laying on the ground was Astral unconscious with what appeared to be a large crack spreading across his chest.

Yusei sprang into action, charging in and punching the creatures away in an attempt to reach Yuma. Yugi and Yuya hung back behind Yusaku not out of fear, but at the shock of seeing Ai emerging from Yusaku’s duel disk and changing form into that of a mass of tentacles. Yusaku didn’t object to Ai’s actions, and let the Ignis do his thing protecting Yusei’s back and tearing the creatures to shreds.

With Ai watching his back, Yusei reached Yuma in no time, the younger boy crying tears of relief at the sight of rescue. Yusei quickly scooped him up with one arm and grabbed Astral with the other. Ai used his large mass to create a protective dome over them while he worked on getting a secured grip on them.

“Hold on tight…” Ai warned as he launched himself back towards Yusaku.

Now that he was back in the safety of the group, the red haze faded away from Yuma’s eyes as everything returned to reality.

“Wh-what...happened?” Yuma asked as he blinked clarity into his eyes.

“You just got hit with some trippy stuff no worries…” Ai grinned...forgetting that he was rather frightening in his larger form.

Yuma obviously panicked, “AH!!! Monster!”

“Now that hurts...it’s just lovely old me Ai…” The Ignis pouted.

“Has he always been able to turn into the embodiment of nightmares?” Yuya asked Yusaku.

“Since I first met him but he’s still an idiot…” Yusaku sighed.

“At least this version of me is great for hugs!” Ai demonstrated this fact by giving Yusei, Yuma, and Astral who were still tangled up in his limbs, a tight squeeze. “Just ask Yusaku, he quite enjoys them.”

Yusaku turned his face away to hide the fact he was now blushing out of embarrassment.

“We still need to find Judai...and the Avengers team as well…” Yugi said, trying to refocus the group, “But where are they?”

His inquiry was answered when Thor was launched through the wall by some sort of strong force.

“Hey boys….” Thor grunted through the pain, “We could use some assistance....”

Before Thor could elaborate anymore, a shadowy tendril shot through the hole in the wall and dragged him back through. Once everyone got over their shock, they followed Thor through the hole.

On the other side was the very definition of a nightmare. Every Avenger member was pinned to the walls by shadows and in the very center, was a tall imposing figure dressed in black and gold armor, the helmet obscuring the figure’s identity.

“Who’s this guy?” Yuya found himself asking.

Tony flipped his visor open and cried out, “It’s Judai! Judai is in that armor!”

This came as a shock to the newcomers, just what had happened to Judai?

Everyone had to scatter when another wave of shadows swept through the room. Yusei held onto Ai tightly as the Ignis refused to let go of anyone and had even grabbed Yusaku to keep him out of the line of fire.

“Ai...do you think you can get close to Judai?” Yusei asked.

“Not without letting you guys go which I am not going to do.” Ai protested as he scooped up Yugi and Yua next. The Avengers were still pinned, unable to move.

“Throw me Ai….”

Everyone turned to Yusaku in shock. “What did you just say?” Ai asked.

“Throw me at Judai…” Yusaku’s gaze was firm and determined, “Throw me and I will break through to him with the Mind Stone.”

“I am not going to…”

“DO IT!” Yusaku cut Ai off, clearly not in the mood for arguing.

Rather reluctantly, Ai took careful aim and shot Yusaku forward, a tendril still wrapped around him as Ai clearly didn’t want to let him go. Yusaku gripped onto Judai’s cape and began trying to wrestle the helmet off. It took some doing but Yusaku managed to slide the visor up revealing that Judai’s eyes were completely blinded by the red haze.Yusaku didn’t even dare try to view Judai’s vision, instead he slapped the Mind Stone on Judai’s forehead and yelled,

“WAKE UP ALREADY!!!!!!”

Yellow light began cracking through Judai’s armor, then down the shadows that were blanketing the room. With a quick flash, everyone dropped to the ground exhausted, Judai included now freed from the dark armor.

Tony groaned as he got to his feet, “That’s it….extra therapy sessions for everyone.”

Steve rubbed his head in frustration, “I still have no idea what Wanda was up to…”

This caught Yugi’s attention, “You know the woman who did this?”

“Her name is Wanda Maximoff, she’s actually an ally to us…” Natasha explained, “But the fact that she attacked us today indicates that something outside her control is going on.”

“So an outside force?” Yusei asked.

“Mostly likely…” Clint said, “Which means we’ve got another conspiracy to break down.”

“Does this happen often?” Yusaku asked.

“More often than we like,” Tony said as he hefted Judai over his shoulder, “Come on...let’s head home. And get that nightmare fuel to shrink down already…” Tony said pointing to Ai, “We already have enough trauma to deal with.

Ai huffed as he finally shrunk back down to his smaller form. He really didn’t care about this Wanda character or any supposed conspiracy theory. The vision he got was still on his mind. After all...the sight of Yusaku’s bullet ridden body was forever burned into his memories.

S5 Ep10: Kaiba Embarrasses Himself on International Television Again

We start off this duel by teasing us into believing that this is a part of a theme park:

The Kaiba theme park is a weird mix of actual horrorscapes and animal crossing cutesy stuff...you can really tell what parts were Mokuba and what parts were Seto in this park.

But Leon takes it well, just kinda standing there as he’s done this entire arc--being a general forgettable nice boy who just...doesn’t do anything. Like he gets up, he plays cards, he sits down. Having him on top of a rock with melodramatic Little Mermaid waves crashing at his feet is laughably the opposite of Leon’s whole vibe.

Leon just seems like the type that listens to coffee shop ambient Youtube videos when he wants to amp himself up. This kid appears to attend a private school...somewhere...I think, and just went to a dueling competition in his school outfit because he literally doesn’t have a style of his own hanging in his closet.

Like Yugi wears his school outfit, but he does that ironically, to off-set the amount of makeup and hair spray he has in his hair. Leon wears the school outfit maybe because he admires Yugi so much, but is like “time for my rogue bow I wear in my hair. That’ll scare my competition.” He completely missed the point of the 00′s alt school outfit scene.

I do way too much art to not see the imagery. I feel like this is half my job, and playing “where’s the hidden Freudian meaning?” is half the fun of going to any art museum.

Anyway, Seto got tired of no one paying any attention to him, so he stepped out of his 14-monitor mancave, he very quickly pulled his Dragon outfit out of the (dirty) laundry, flicked a couple sea crabs out of his pockets, spritzed it with Febreeze and called it “good enough.”

Like, is it just me, or has dragon jacket greyed out a tad from last season? Like it’s starting to get a little...worn? Like what funk is coming off of Seto Kaiba right now?

Also notice that he brought his giant stash of cards to the duel. He’s going to put on this show as if he’s not going to pull out the giant stash of cards. But like...he’s going to pull out the giant stash of cards. Like Hell boring ass Leon is going to play his deck of Candyland characters again.

Leon is declared a winner on Technicality and it’s like.

Damn Seto, for reals?

So congrats, Leon, you did literally nothing, again, and yet you mystifyingly persist on this show. Clearly you aren‘t going to grow a second head out of that ponytail like professor Quirrel in the last act of this arc.

That’s when Yugi’s hazy memory recalls something from the Before Times of “that time period before I was possessed by a needy ghost that eats up 3/4 of my memories and time.”

So Schroeder is Atari. Neat.

Also, this makes Zigfrieds outfits a hell ton more endearing when you realize he’s this Willy Wonka game company owner making toys for children. Kinda makes you wonder why Seto’s such a stick up the ass in comparison when it’s like--dude Kaiba, maybe you could learn a thing or two about whimsy. It could really help out your inconsistent park.

Anyway, Kaiba quickly realized who hacked the park and so, understandably, he asked Zigried to leave, which...backfired?

Y’all card culture is a lot. Everyone in the audience covered their faces in shame because they were so embarrassed by Seto Kaiba and I’m like...not sure why? Because he didn’t do a duel? Against this guy who snuck into his tourney not unlike Rex and Weevil? This asshole?

Recall that the last time Seto played a guy who had a fake name it was Marik freakin Ishtar and he killed a LOT of people (actually, it was Alister, pretending to be Pegasus, but he also killed a lot of people so that still tracks). Card culture can’t seem to learn from their mistakes, although Seto clearly sees the problem with dueling a professional hacker in a digital card game on a hologram that may or may not be able to murder you. At least its not a magic.

And so, tired of being humiliated on television, Seto decides to bust out the dueling gloves (well, not those gloves. You know what I meant) and use the equipment he BROUGHT WITH HIM and clearly never intended not to use in the first place.

(I hope you enjoy this dutch angle that wasn’t quite dutch enough, so it just looks like they’re lounging)

Roland patiently walks over from...somewhere? I don’t know where Roland comes from whenever he pops up, but he waltzed over to hold onto this suitcase as if that’s a formal part of his job.

I say this so often but like...I don’t know what Roland’s job is. He’s like a valet/butler/duel referee/duel cheerleader/CEO/and I will spend the rest of this series trying to understand it. Part of me is like...could Roland be a temp worker at an agency who just gets rehired for a different Kaiba Corp job every couple of weeks?

That weird ass fourthKaiba, I will never understand Roland.

Just one letter away from being a Zigfriend, Kaiba. Just one letter away. I know this because I misspell friend a LOT.

Zigfreind? Zigfriend? Damn it, both of them look the freakin same to me, this sucks! Why can’t I spell friend without autocorrect!?

Just the amount these two fight when Seto clearly barely even remembers who this guy even is.

Leon shows up in the seats, pretending that he’s totally cool about winning on a technicality right after Zigfried went on a rant about how shameful, irredeemable, and mortally embarrassing winning on technicalities are.

He seems to take it pretty well, smiling, sitting next to Rebecca, and then dissolving right into the background because this kid’s whole deal is being way too nice to exist on this show.

Y’all we just had that art meme where people were redrawing that “How to draw manga face” and guys...that’s what our anime used to look like.

I mean look at that uncomfortable chin there, that tapers in for some reason. Those eyes melting off of her face. The lack of any 3d sense. This was an anime ideal for a very, very long time.

Anyway, the “how to draw manga face” is a perfect masterpiece and never needs to change. (But it is fun to make fun of it although I guess the person that drew it was actually a kid, which makes sense from a publishing perspective to have a kid make a book about how to draw stuff for kids.)

We see a little flashback of Schroeder and why he hates Seto Kaiba, and can I just say, I kind of love this little outfit. Kind of a shame that it’s stuffed into a flashback.

Which is when we found out that Zigfried thinks Seto Kaiba did a plagiarism.

Which is hilarious because it was Gozaburo Kaiba who was plagiarizing Seto, so like...who did it first?

OK guys. Lets talk about this.

APPARENTLY, there was some sort of contest to work with Pegasus...kind of like an architecture contest (which is a thing, when a city is doing a big project, they send out a call, and big firms will compete to see who builds it) and I GOTTA know what Pegasus’ theme was.

Like did he say to all the little rich kid geniuses “I would like something that makes my cards ALIVE, can you do that?” Then when Pegasus got a hell ton of holograms and was he like “But ALIVE--it makes it alive, right boy?” And when he was shaking the hands of each stupid kid was he like “So if I hypothetically put my dead wife on a card and slapped it into the machine--could she EXIST. Like...enough? I just need her to legally exist is all, and not like..literally of course...but enough literally to be a sin against God, can you do that?”

I just want to know if Willy Wonka Wonderkid Von Schroeder had any idea he was creating a resurrection chamber for a dark wizard. Like he has no idea that he dodged getting his business bought straight from under him and his soul shoved into a card. And it’s not like Schroeder was going to abduct Yugi’s Grandpa and ensure that Yugi would be there to save him down the road. Like I’m pretty sure Schroeder would have been sacrificed waaay before that whole island contest even went down.

Zigfried got so freakin lucky. I can’t believe he’s mad. But then again...

...the man swims in milk pools so like...maybe his logic center is busted? Maybe he wanted to die in a horrific murder island? I don't know what Zigfried is into, but I do know that because Zigfried doesn’t have millennium rod powers linking him to the millennium eye--so would it have mattered? There’s destiny reasons that Pegasus chose Kaiba.

Course...we never found out where the scales ended up, have we? We think it’s Shadi, but have we seen Shadi bust those out since Season Zero?

Man that would be a good plot twist that will absolutely not happen.

Yo, make horse guy into a dark wizard, show, I dare you!

So This is Just Me Indulging on That Superhero AU

Fun Fact: This AU is over a year old, starting in March 2020 and still developing. I will 100% be drawing this au, and probably making a comic series with it.

Side Note: This post is really long, read at your own risk. It also doesn’t include all of the information of the au, just what I want to elaborate on

Okay So Here’s some Background Information that I want to include because with the comic pages it will be mentioned, but not in the detail that I would like it to be:

AOE - Alliance of the Elements: Consists of Jack Merridew, Roger Volkov, Maurice Bellomo, and Robert Evans. Is Controlled By PotG

PotG - Protectors of the Globe. Global Alliance that trains those with powers and protects the Earth from Extra Terrestrial threats. Funded and run by a member of each developed country.

The Runaways - Those who left PotG in a illegal fashion, exposing secrets about the organisation as they left. Members Unknown, Ralph Allebach is the known leader and only identified member.

Each Characters’ Powers:

- Jack Merridew: The Element of Fire, When angered it comes in fierce blasts that burn anyone it touches who isn’t protected. His powers falter in rain or underwater.

- Ralph Allebach: Controls the Weather, whenever he cries the sky cries as well. He can overcharge when using too much lightning energy, causing a sudden collapse. He can fly as well, along with being able to manipulate Roger’s powers to an extent, if he is focused enough.

- Roger Volkov: The Element of Air, espionage, and infiltration. He is the combat trainer of the AOE and can summon tornadoes and extremely high winds.

- Dyria “Simon” Cortés: Dyria is an alien from the planet Nagneon, born as the heir to the throne. His planet differs heavily from Earth and the PotG gave him the nickname “Simon” and began using he/him pronouns instead of they/them due to Earth’s society. He can summon the energy of the star on his planet and use his body to project its energy. He is one of the things the PotG wishes to understand but never can, as he is too powerful for them to experiment on without catastrophic consequences.

- Maurice Bellomo: The Element of Earth. Maurice can cause Earthquakes, control rock formations, summon plants and control most aspects of nature as a fighting technique. His powers are ever evolving and he is widely considered to be the least powerful Elemental as he hasn’t reached his peak yet. The Earth heals him at high speeds and he causes craters when distressed.

- Sam Pinch: Can manipulate electrical currents with his hands and has super speed due to an Atomic explosion that didn’t kill him or his brother. He talks extraordinarily fast and can remain unseen by most. In order to make up for the calories he burns, he has to eat in high amounts. His super speed is borderline uncontrollable when he is outside of his suit, body moving faster than the mind can comprehend. When manipulating electricity, he causes a blip of energy in the surrounding area. The explosion caused him to have heavy hearing loss and he wears hearing aids.

- Robert Evans: The Element of Water. Robert tends to spend all of his time in the ocean, only emerging when he is needed as he is currently on the throne under the waves. He can breathe underwater and communicates with sea creatures, as well as controlling water on land. His main tactic of combat against his enemies is to remove all forms of water in the human body, however he is known to have summoned hurricanes and high ocean waves to wipe out places.

- Eric Pinch: Has Chaos Magic, which grants him with the ability to manipulate reality in any way he chooses and has electrical powers very similar to Scarlett Witch (Marvel). Was also given to him in the Atomic experiment gone wrong, his body absorbing a certain unidentified element. He can control his powers to an extent, intense emotions causing him to lose his mental balance and become a death machine.

- Peter Curtis - No superpowers, but is an incredibly intelligent hacker and coder who works for Ralph but is currently undercover as a PotG officer. He regularly sabotages the PotG plans to kill the Runaways and trades information with Ralph. He is skilled in manipulating others.

Details of Importance:

- The Elementals are each over 4,000 years old, coming from a long line of those with powers who have since died off. They laid dormant until absolutely needed, the prophecy stating “Those who control the elements laid in deep sleep, growing stronger each day and emerging when the world needs them most.” The elementals came from different areas that correlated with their powers. Jack from a Volcano, Maurice from a Crack in the Earth’s surface, Roger from the middle of a Tornado and Robert from the ocean’s tides. Their identities are kept entirely a secret through masks and identity manipulation tactics.

- Only one of the Runaways laid dormant for some time, his appearance being a mystery as only those who control elements are supposed to emerge from the Earth.

- The Runaways were all once part of PotG, identities and numbers still unknown. They lay as the elementals biggest target currently. One was found in the remains of a thunderstorm with such high winds that his house collapsed, one in the remains of an old minefield, supposedly dead, the other two in an old farmhouse, right after their mother exploded. The runaways hardly pose a real threat, but the leader of PotG wants them to be brought in.

- Chips have been installed in each elemental’s scalp to track their whereabouts as well as their health and stats such as heartbeat, blood pressure, etc.

- Ralph and Jack’s ancestors met once a year to discuss their futures and when they realised extinction was on the horizon, the two populations had Ralph’s biological mother and Jack’s biological father merge their blood together through a cut on their hands, so whenever either of their bloodlines was in peril danger, they could call on each other’s powers to save them.

- The Prophecy was predicted thousands of years ago, after the first extinction of elementals and those who came after found remains of their civilisations. It reads that “Those who must save the world are those who destroy it first - The beings who control the elements lay deep in sleep, growing stronger with each second humanity breathes, and will emerge when the world needs them most. The globe must burn before it can be reconstructed with fragile hands, sculpting a new childhood for the young out of clay. The world must end for it to begin again. It all starts with the flicker of the boy from flame.”

- The Inferia Crystals: The Inferia Crystals were crafted by the ancestors of the elementals and those who set up humanity to build the prophecy. 4 crystals were stolen by the runaways and 4 remain with the elementals. They control certain sectors of the Earth, split into 8 parts thousands of years ago, and help some beings gain control over their own powers.

- Each Elemental has been tagged with a certain number, the correlation of number to person still unknown to those who wear the tags. They come in the form of a dog tag necklace, and they were told to never take them off. Jack is #2098, Roger is #3092, Maurice is #4266, and Robert is #5609

Areas Of Importance:

- PotG base - Unknown location, Run by Roger Volkov’s adoptive father

- The Arena - Located in the centre of the PotG base, The Arena is generally used for entertainment of the wealthy. Prisoners are pitched into a dome, an audience surrounding them on all sides, and are forced to fight to the death or until Roger Volkov’s adoptive father calls it off. Competitors are given poorly crafted weapons and armour, the arena not built for those of great power.

- The Crystalline Cave: The cave in which the walls hold the Prophecy, carved into glass. Each elemental has an area with carvings that glows when they pass by, but it is unknown as to why or what it means.

- The Runaways Base: The Runaway’s base is in an unknown location, on the top of an unknown mountain. They have charms and protective spells up to hide them from the public entirely, area appearing as government owned property.
