I like the "settle down, get married, have kids" ending for Ed in "Fullmetal Alchemist" because it suits the themes and the character arcs well. But also because there's still plenty of room for adventure beyond the joys of a simple life (it is fun to imagine Ed picking up a million homesteading-related hobbies with all his usual competitive spirit); Winry has a thriving career! She and Ed can travel around the country, visit people, and probably even visit Xing before kids or when their kids are old enough for travel.

But I also like it fine because I feel 100% certain that Edward Elric would not have children unless he was 100% certain that he wanted them and was ready to be a good dad. He would not bring life into this world recklessly. I feel like he would have asked himself, "Is there any chance I might be a deadbeat dad?" and that he was absolutely ruthless with his analysis of his character, like, to the degree that it quickly stopped being funny or embarrassing and started being sad. He'd try and get his own Riza Hawkeye about this: "If it ever looks like I'm being a shitty father or husband, I need you to kill me," he says, sleep-deprived and panicking, and Alphonse can only be like, "Brother... No..."

Also, I feel like we shouldn't leave Winry out of this. This woman is driven and successful and was orphaned because her parents left her for a good cause. She and Ed would sit their asses down and have an excruciatingly thorough and detailed conversation about parenthood and their future. I could buy an AU where they mutually decided to be childfree, sure, but I cannot be fully convinced that they as a team would be reckless about children and parenthood.

I'm sure they'd make mistakes, of course, as all parents do. (I also feel like they would try and make plans with the same focus as automail schematics and alchemic circles, which would often be immediately ruined upon contact with the "enemy". And that Uncle Alphonse would shamelessly and mischievously spoil his niblings against parental wishes whenever his brother's back was turned. Traitor.) But they're also one of those couples where I see them in the cliché "happily ever after" and I can genuinely be like, "Yeah, they're fine."

Sorry its so late buf i am in an Edling mood tonight and I will never stop thinking about the idea of how theyre the epitome of right person wrong time.

(obviously in a context of like fandom shenannigans where canon events arent 100% set in stone like edling arent canon but also idc !! they are to me! im ignoring it let me be insane) ANYWAY

Even if they wanted to be together post promised day Ling has all the responsibilities of Xing and his clan and Edward would never hold him back from that for a second. Im of the opinion that brotherhood Edward feels a lot of guilt for wanting love from the people around him particularly those he sees as good (winry, alphonse, etc) especially if hes done things hes perceived as hurting them (maes’ death, the transmutation, etc etc). Which is why I think Edward connects with Ling so well cayse he doesnt carry the weight of a lot if his past mistakes, and then when the stone happens its like goddamn it i roped this guy into my shit again. Like i dont know Edward doesnt really dedicate himself so fully to people outside of winry and ed a lot so its interesting like!!

He cares about a lot of people like the majority of the allied cast and we see him be openly affectionate towards Nina and Hughes pre their deaths but I think Ling is the only person hes ever decided to stick with WITHOUT alphonse? I may be wrong but the whole sure Ill stay with you and trust my brother and Winry to stay safe and follow you around the outskirts of the east for a week till the promised day to protect my new friend is so??? what?? huh???

But anyone my point is post promised day Edward cant really ever see a future with Ling because of all the responsibility Ling holds outside of him and its veyr tragic imo like especially because in a different scenario if Ling didnt have those responsibilities and Edward wasn’t so dedicated to the people around him to a fault of never thinking about his own desires I think they could have the possibility of a future.

Like I have read a lot of fanfiction abiut Ed traveling to Xing and living with him there but?? I realistically cant see him ever doing that just solely because Edward is not the type of person to settle down! like its my one and only criticism of the fma manga is that I cannot see Edward ever being satisfied with a simple life? Like even in Fma 03 which is my favourite interpretation of Edwards character once he gets stranded in our world he learns?? Rocket Science?? For the chance to get back to Amestris but he doesnt really seem to take that goal all that seriously especially considered Alfons ends up getting involved in a lot more aircraft projects than Edward like Edwsrd genuinely enjoys learning!!

Im pretty sure he was the one who dragged Alphonse into Hoenhiems office when they were kids after he left, probably to Al’s reluctance of if they were allowed in there, and started ripping through all of his old books just to learn. Edward never stops and it gets so bad that he never stops to even consider himself constantly worrying about getting his brother back or improving the states of others lives especially when! ya know! the whole country is at stake!!

So in a circumstance post promised day where Ed decides what he wants to do (my personal favourite interpretation is either an alchemical researcher outside of directly performing alchemy, ie revolutionizing the circle matrixes and discovering nee combinations or becoming a professor of some kind) I dont think he would give that up to settle again. And obviously Ling cant exactly up and leave being Emperor unless he decides he doesnt want to, im not the most knowledgable on Lings characterization so I wont speak there but!

They have so much fun together and compliment each other and genuinely care about each other so much but their happiness and fulfillment as people to themselves and others make it so its nearly impossible they would ever realistically end up together and its really doomed and tragic!! idk i think about it a lot.

Thinking about how Edward and Ling are probably just as touch starved as each other, but in like, vastly different ways.

With Edward- based off what I can tell- the only people he knew he could be physically affectionate with in any way, was his mother and Alphonse.

(Not to say Winry and Pinako aren’t affectionate with the boys, but I feel like being physically affectionate isn’t something that comes naturally to either of them. They seem like they prefer acts of service as a way of showing how much they care more than anything, and I think that’s wonderful! Even after the Elric brothers pretty much decided to kiss their hometown goodbye, the relationship they have with the Rockbells is still strong enough to where they know they can rely on them for anything, which is very important.)

But it really sucks, because their mom is long gone, and Alphonse, while he’s still around, no longer has a body. He’s a soul bound to a suit of armor, and he can’t feel anything. And I’m sure that Alphonse is still as physically affectionate with Edward as he can be with the body he has, but the unfortunate truth of the matter is, that if he isn’t careful, he might accidentally injure Edward. And I’m sure that terrifies him more than anything. Alphonse is so kind, gentle and loving, and the idea of hurting his brother by accident, or otherwise would devastate him. So he keeps Edward at arms’ length, just so he doesn’t get hurt.

Whereas with Ling, there isn’t much about his background that we know canonically (that I can recall- if any of you know something, feel free to add on), but considering the fact that he was conceived by the emperor and a noblewoman for the sole purpose of being a potential heir to the throne, and nothing else, I don’t think his childhood was filled with much genuine affection.

I’m sure he was treated well, but there’s a difference between actual love and care for a child, and the pretty much forced respect for the potential heir to a throne. His days were filled with constant training and education to prepare him to run a country, and typically with characters like him, they usually are fed some sort of BS akin to “showing/receiving affection is a form of weakness,” and “don’t get attached to anyone, or you’ll lose everything”. Stuff like that. And not to project headcanons onto a character that no one has seen in canon, but I’m sure Ling’s mother saw her son as more of a way to get more power, than an actual family member. Again, could be wrong, but considering the fact that the emperor produces heirs by just… going to the “best” noble families of each clan in his kingdom to ensure his bloodline is “pure” or some shit, that blatant disregard for family is probably the norm for anyone in power in Xing.

And I know that Lan Fan and Fu do genuinely love and care for Ling, but at the end of the day, they’re his bodyguards. Their relationship is purely professional, and they all know that if they overstep those boundaries, that could spell the end for them. They have to keep him at arms’ length to ensure their survival.

Basically, what I’m saying is, Ling has probably never received a sincere hug his entire god damn life.

So, I’m just thinking that the first time they hug or hold hands or some shit, they’re both so nervous, because Edward hasn’t been held in so long, and Ling doesn’t know what to expect, but then they both just melt into each other.

TL;DR: Ed and Ling share the same amount of touch-starvation, but physical affection was ripped away from Edward, and Ling was never provided any to begin with. They should clearly join forces.

Conclusion: it was okay. There were parts I genuinely liked. There are things that also bug me to no end. The soundtrack from the original series would’ve fit way better and a lot of times it sounded like an off brand marvel track. Acting and cgi was a lot better (at times.) An improvement on the first one, and a semi-worthwhile watch if you have nothing else to do and you like fma. Cannot and will never be a substitute for the original obviously. Seems like less of a cash grab and more of a genuine effort this time which I appreciate. Overall? 6.5/10

I had a fic idea where Roy is the president (and Ed’s fiancé), but one afternoon, no one in the president’s mansion seems to know where Roy is. Ed thinks that something bad happened to Roy, so he’s freaking out a little bit. Luckily, Alphonse is visiting from Xing, and is there to comfort Ed.

Ed’s sitting in Roy’s study with his head held in his hands. “Something’s wrong, Al, I can feel it, I can feel it in my bones... You know it’s bad when I feel things in my bones; I have less bones than the average person, you know...”

“Yes, yes, I know that brother…” Al tiredly replies. He’s pretty sure that Roy’s fine, but he still gives his brother a comforting pat on the back. 

Then who comes in through the back door? It’s none other than Roy, with a large paper bag in his arms. “Bought us some steamed buns!” he announces happily.

Al perks up and he’s like, “Oh! What kind?!” 

Meanwhile, Ed hangs his head even lower, and he calmly motions to the personal protection agent standing in the corner. “Come,” Ed says quietly. “Come, come here…” So the agent hesitantly walks over, and Ed makes him stoop down a bit so he can steal his walkie talkie off of him. 

“This is Ed calling John, Ed calling John… we need reinforcements in the East Study. Over.”

Roy’s confused. “Reinforcements? Why do we need reinforcements?”

“To stop me from killing you, you son of a fucking bitch! How dare you make me care about you!?”

Request: Could I request Ling Yao x clingy reader? Not super clingy, but the kind of S/O whi just feels safer near their partner, or enjoys holding hands as often as possible as it calms them down?

A/N: Couldn't do this one without adding Greedling for a small section, sectioned it off so that you can skip it if you want but I figured it was something that you would need to address as well.

👑 Ling would love a clingy S/O or someone who relies on him to feel safe, he relies on you to reassure him that he’s doing the right thing, so you both need each other's case closed. 👑 He was the one to ask you to travel across the desert with, it’s not like you don’t know how to look after yourself so you agreed since you never felt more at ease than when you were with him. 👑 He makes sure that he’s holding your hand when he can or standing close enough that you could feel him there. 👑 He’s excited about everything, he pointed things out to you as he dragged you from place to place, he never forgot about you, you were literally attached at the hip. 👑 Ling is careful with you around other people, like the first time that you met Ed and Alphonse and he made sure that you were practically sitting on his lap so that he could keep you safe. 👑 Times when you get overwhelmed he’ll let you play with his fingers, hold his hand or lean against him until you feel better.

Greedling

👑 The one time that you and Ling were separated he made a decision that affected you both and Greed took control of the body that was supposed to keep you safe, it wasn’t the same as it had been. 👑 Ling basically conned Greed into finding you, he needed to make sure that you were okay while he trusted Lan Fan and Fu to keep you safe, he was sure that you still needed him. 👑 He wasn’t wrong in his absence you had become more jumpy and less trusting, you only really spoke to Lan Fan and never really left whatever safe house they had managed to find. 👑 Greed came straight through the window, no regard for scaring you. 👑 You would have taken his head off had he not been wearing Ling’s face, he tried at first to pass himself off as the man you had been waiting for but you saw right through him, that was when he explained what happened and even gave you a few minutes with Ling. 👑 From there you set up a small deal that allowed you to still see Ling nights to cuddle up and talk or moments of hand holding or quick whisper in your ears. 👑 You ended up getting to know Greed in the time that he spent in Ling’s body and realised that they were very similar, Greed quickly became a stand in for Ling and while they both reacted differently to your affection, they both loved it for different reasons. 👑 Greed was just as protective of you and kept you just as close though he would tell you it was because the prince wouldn’t shut up if he didn’t. 👑 Basically the same relationship but way more teasing.

Back to Ling

👑 Once Ling has his body back he doesn’t let you go for a very long time, he missed being able to touch you and worried that he’d never get to do it of his own free will again. 👑 Apologies for putting you through that and promises that he’ll never do it again. 👑 Kisses you for the first time when you are back in Xing and he is announced as the new emperor. 👑 Never lets you go again, allows you to do whatever you wanted, playing with his hair, fingers or sitting on his lap as you had hushed conversations. 👑 Will dedicate times of the day to you and make sure that no one interrupts you. 👑 Will drop everything if you needed something, if you needed support he was there, hand connected to yours as he encouraged you forward. 👑 No matter what he loves you and supports you no matter what you need, after all I fully believe this man loves giving to whoever he chooses as his. Gifts, time, physical affection it’s all yours for as long as you will have him.

Don't forget to get him flowers!" and then they make out sloppy style. they are eachothers best friends too. which is great in a relationship. I like this. they are neat. Almei is soooooo (twirls my hair kicks my feet) 2 me. They do not kiss. Their relationship isn't strictly platonic but it's not romantic in the slightest. I like to imagine a stupid ocomic of Alphonse coming home to resembool and being like "shitt I had something to tell you but I forgor. oh well" and then they go about stuff and then a little while later Mei pops in like "Hey guys!!! Hi fiance!!!" and Ed and Winry just WHIP their heads to Al and then he panics like "I FUCKING FORGOT THAT I HAD TO TELL YOU GUYS WE"RE GETTING MARRIED HOLY SHIT" and then when they ask WHY because last time they checked they weren't dating or even romantically interested in each other. and then Al wraps an arm around Edward and goes "Brother do you know what the tax benefits are in Xing and Amestris are? It's insane." and then Edward strokes his chin and decides he and Winry should get legally married finally. Winry is kinda pissy about it actually becvause it finally takes the a tax scheme for them to get legally married. anyways. I think. Almei is so neat and amazing and they go on adventures together and they feed eachother and shit and are so fucking close to eachother. they're literally best friends. their bonded relation ship in in the top two in al's mind second only to him and Edward's brotherly relationship. Winry scrapes by as a third. they are so fucking neat to me. I love almei. the nonlovers ever.

That "even if you're writing a non-canon pairing in fanfiction, you have to respect that these characters will probably still care on a basic level about their original love interest" post was inspired by a lot of things. But foremost inspired by any "Fullmetal Alchemist" fanfiction that tries to convince me that Edward Elric doesn't actually like Winry Rockbell at all.

Like, uh, no. Ed would die for Winry, so jot that down. Even if you're writing an AU where one or both of them are gay, which is fun and fine, Ed and Winry are ride or die for each other. They've known each other for so long. They trust each other so much. When they're arguing with each other or annoying the other, it's because THEY CARE. This is basic characterization for them.

I was amusing myself by thinking about an AU in which Ed's romantic interest is someone like Ling Yao, in which there's some dangerous situation where Ed has to choose between saving Winry (his sister figure in this AU) and saving Ling. I was immediately like, "Oh, he would FOR SURE pick Winry in most scenarios. Sorry, Ling." Which would suck for Ed, because he hates failing to save anyone, but is also funny to think about with Ling specifically, because I think that Ling would actually respect this decision more.

Unlike Winry, Ling is a combatant with bodyguards, and so can be trusted to handle himself in dangerous situations. (Which obviously does not make Ling a BETTER love interest for Ed than Winry, Winry doesn't need to be good at fighting, it's just a different skillset.) Ling is also a leader, someone who wants to be an emperor someday, and I think he has opinions on loyalty. Despite feeling grateful to be saved, I think Ling might think quite poorly of Ed choosing him (a relative stranger, even if he is a legit snack) over Winry (functionally a member of Ed's family / clan, a skilled specialist who is necessary to Ed's own combat capabilities), because Ed sure as shit wouldn't be considering future political advantages with Xing here, so it would be choosing a new love over family / a loyal friend. Depending on the scenario (it all depends on the specific situation for all of these cases), I also think that Ling might choose to save someone like Lan Fan or even Mei Chang over Ed in a lot of situations, especially because Ed would HATE IT SO MUCH if Ling knowingly sacrificed anyone for his sake.

Non-canon pairings and their AUs are interesting to me partially for how they interact with the existing canonical relationships and how they negotiate with canonical motivations. For some characters, romantic relationships are just not as important as familial ones or their own goals. Obviously, for Edward Elric, (depending on the specific situation at hand, of course) he's going to choose Alphonse over nearly anyone else.

Why don’t you ship it?

So I see AlMei as a one-sided crush that fades away after they get a bit older. The main reason I don't ship it is that I never saw any actual evidence in canon of Al being romantically interested in Mei. I guess you could say that's because he doesn't have a body, so he doesn't have hormones or a racing heart or anything to influence the way he thinks about her. But in every interaction we see them have in canon, Mei will be all googly eyes and "ALPHONSE-SAMAAAAA!!! <3" while Al is like, "Hi, Mei :)" Comparing that to the way Ed and Winry are around each other, or even Mustang and Hawkeye, for that matter...yeah, I just don't see it.

2. What would have made you like it?

I think one of the things that really killed the ship for me, besides the above, was that one bit when they're escaping Father's lair. Mei is wounded, so Al picks her up and runs to take her to safety, using his status as a human sacrifice for the Homunculi to protect her. Mei says, "I didn't ask for your help!" while being severely wounded and clearly not able to run away under her own steam. That happens to be one of my pet peeves, so that really irked me. If instead there had been a sweet scene of her genuinely thanking Al for going above and beyond the call of duty, and Al had responded in a way that even just hinted at him maybe starting to have a crush on her too...maybe that would have worked.

Ultimately, I think one of the big problems I see with the ship (without further development later on in Xing or something) is that there's not a whole lot of depth to it, especially when you compare it to the other romances in the series. All the other romances are with married couples, childhood friends, or people who have sworn to walk through hell for each other. A girl with a crush on a guy she barely knows...just doesn't compare, sorry.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Al and Mei are very cute together, I'll give them that ^_^ There are a lot of fun and humorous moments they share (and that can be imagined when Al goes to Xing!). The chibi versions of them are also freaking adorable :3 My favorite moment between them is probably when Mei abruptly develops a crush on Al for being a heroic gentleman, and imagines him dressed up all fancy like a prince XD
