Today in Christian History
Today is Tuesday, May 2nd, the 122nd day of 2023. There are 243 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
373: Death of Athanasius in Alexandria, Egypt. More than any other man, he took up the fight for Christ’s divinity in his writings. Five times he had been forced into exile. Slander dogged him. Yet he remained faithful to his vision of an uncreated Christ. He was the first to list the books of the New Testament as we know them.
1550: Joan Boucher is burned to death in England for denying that the Virgin Mary was sinless. When a bishop preached at her execution, trying to convert her, she told him he “lied like a rogue” and bade him “go and read the Scriptures.”
1852: Death in England of Samuel Leigh, who had been the first Methodist missionary to Australia and had also served in New Zealand.
1952: Death of Matrona of Moscow (Matryona Nikonova) who had been born blind and early showed an ability to prophesy. She had adhered to the faith of the Orthodox Church despite being rendered homeless by the Soviets, and people had concealed her whereabouts so that she was never arrested and sent to the Gulag. She will be named a saint by her church.
1982: Lin Xiangao (Samuel Lamb) is arrested in Guangzhou for holding house church services. He had already served two sentences in prison for resisting Chinese laws against giving religious instruction to the young and refusal to submit to the government-run Three Self Patriotic Church.
2008: A Muslim mob attacks the largely-Christian village of Horale, Indonesia, killing four Christians, wounding fifty-six, burning down three churches, the village school, and 120 homes.
2010: Roadside bombs explode and hit two buses filled with Christian students making their daily ride to the University of Mosul in Iraq. One hundred and sixty one are injured and Sandy Shabib will die from her injuries.
2011: Turkish authorities demolish the 200-year-old Greek Orthodox Chapel of Saint Thekla in Vokolida, Cyprus.

Alice Choy and her sister have recently moved to South Korea for their mother's job. Alice has always been a singer at heart, but has not sung since the move. When she and her sister go to karaoke one night Alice is discovered by a scout for Top10Entertainment. From there Alice is swept up into the world of Kpop (the good and the bad) when she begins training at Star Academy and is set to debut with the new girl group A-List.
This book was great! I loved living in the world of Kpop while I read. While I highly doubt anything like what happened to Alice would ever actually happen I didn't care...because this book was fun and had so much heart. It was great to see Alice grow as a person and an artist and become a team player. I also enjoyed all of the side characters and what they brought to the table. The ending left me hanging! I'd love to see a second book about A-List post debut.

ALRIGHT some book recs coming up, straight from my shelves to yours <3
first of all, i've never read anything bad by holly bourne or sophie kinsella ever. they're mostly quick and fun reads, though holly bourne's books usually center around more serious issues, too.
cemetery boys by aiden thomas. lgbt+ urban fantasy set around el día de muertos, need i say more?
howl's moving castle by diana wynne jones. i've been told this is somewhat different from the ghibli movie, but i didn't grow up with it and so i don't actually know. i went into this without knowing anything but the main characters' names and absolutely loved it.
the guernsey literary and potato peel pie society by mary ann shaffer and annie barrows. one of my all time faves, an epistolary novel set after ww2 in which a bunch of people really love books and it's also sad and beautiful. the movie's great, too!
the school for good and evil by soman chainani. this is a series that they're making into a netflix show next year and kit young will be in it and it's gonna be great. set in a fairy tale universe, two young girls are sent to the titulary school to be main fairy tale characters, essentially. this has some of the most buckwild plot twists i've ever read, and i'm not even joking.
beach read by emily henry. a romance novel between two writers who make a bet to write their next novel in the other one's preferred genre. i'm going to put an 18+ warning on that one though since i don't actually know how old you are and this does get spicy!
wicked by gregory maguire. yes there's a musical. (i had to) this is a retelling of the wonderful wizard of oz, but make it darker and add a dash of political commentary.
invisible women by caroline criado pérez. if you wanna get upset about the patriarchal society we all live in, this is the book for you.
ninth house by leigh bardugo. i know you're familiar with the grishaverse, but i also really liked her other fantasy novel! it's considerably darker, but it has those gritty urban fantasy dark academia vibes that i think are very seasonal.
written in the stars by alexandria bellefleur. i'm currently reading this and i'm all kinds of in love with it. it's got lesbian fake dating, the characters are named after pride and prejudice characters, and there are lots of astrology references. it's glorious.
i also said i wouldn't start reading the marvel comics, but they literally had a falcon and the winter soldier collection at my library sooo if you wanna see alpine and read some very out of context comic excerpts i can highly recommend. i'm very confused and entertained 😂 hope this helps x

Celebrate Local: New Orleans Hosts The Scout Guide Editor Conference
May was a big month for The Scout Guide New Orleans! The Scout Guide hosted its annual editor conference in New Orleans. Sixty TSG Editors from across the country traveled to the Crescent City in search of endless inspiration...and of course, a good time. Mission accomplished thanks to the incredible small business owners who make New Orleans the most exciting place to live and visit.

New Orleans wasn’t just selected because its a fun place to be — I was one of the very first franchise owners to establish The Scout Guide outside of home base in Charlottesville, Virginia. For our first road show, co-founders Susie Matheson and Christy Ford wanted to share with our young Editors the experience of what The Scout Guide can be in a community.
Building a brand doesn’t happen over night, but it sure does seem like ours did. Since 2010, TSG has grown to a network of 60 city guides dedicated to celebrating and supporting over 3,000 small business owners who keep communities unique. TSG combines print, online and a national network making it a pretty powerful platform for local businesses to shine.
Eight years ago when I first brought The Scout Guide to New Orleans, I had this one little blue book, The Scout Guide Charlottesville. There was no Instagram, barely a website or blog, definitely no searchable directory, or a network of 60 Editors to support local. I was selling my passion for New Orleans and desire to create a visual for our city to shine on a national platform (at a time when we were still convincing people we were open for business.)

I had big dreams for my small business, but I am not sure I visualized a union of our powerful network in my own backyard. So when I looked around in a room and saw all the people gathered based off of something that I built, it was a pretty moving experience.

Susan Zackin who plans parties in New Orleans and Palm Beach (and everywhere in between) met her champion on the ground in any port of call. Interior Designer Shaun Smith and Restaurant Owner Robert Leblanc shared with Editors how The Scout Guide has supported the growth of his business.

Today’s Highlight in History:
373: Death of Athanasius in Alexandria, Egypt. More than any other man, he took up the fight for Christ’s divinity in his writings. Five times he had been forced into exile. Slander dogged him. Yet he remained faithful to his vision of an uncreated Christ. He was the first to list the books of the New Testament as we know them.
1550: Joan Boucher is burned to death in England for denying that the Virgin Mary was sinless. When a bishop preached at her execution, trying to convert her, she told him he “lied like a rogue” and bade him “go and read the Scriptures.”
1852: Death in England of Samuel Leigh, who had been the first Methodist missionary to Australia and had also served in New Zealand.
1982: Lin Xiangao (Samuel Lamb) is arrested in Guangzhou for holding house church services. He had already served two sentences in prison for resisting Chinese laws against giving religious instruction to the young and refusal to submit to the government-run Three Self Patriotic Church.
2008: A Muslim mob attacks the largely-Christian village of Horale, Indonesia, killing four Christians, wounding fifty-six, burning down three churches, the village school, and 120 homes.
2010: Roadside bombs explode and hit two buses filled with Christian students making their daily ride to the University of Mosul in Iraq. One hundred and sixty one are injured and Sandy Shabib will die from her injuries.
2011: Turkish authorities demolish the 200-year-old Greek Orthodox Chapel of Saint Thekla in Vokolida, Cyprus.

Don’t judge this one by its cover and its obscure publisher. This one rocks everyone’s socks. Friggin here for Wasp, my girl.
The Archived – Victoria Schwab – fairly serious, recommended for how well it deals with grief and responsibility, sad girl Mackenzie, and mascara-wearing boy neighbor. Just, like, stab my heart. Read this Or Else.
Reboot – Amy Tintera – YA with sex mention in final book – pretty serious, recommended for cold main character Wren and the cute softboi love interest, also the premise that kids who come back from the dead have to become supersoldiers.
A Study in Charlotte – Brittany Cavallaro – older YA due to drug addiction, sexual assault mention, etc. Hilarious but serious. Recommended for very hard and dark topics, troubled Charlotte Holmes and sweet softboi Jamie Watson. Also detectives. Also pain. Read this Or Else.
Shade Me – Jennifer Brown – older YA/New Adult (NA) Warning: Nikki Kill, like the noir detectives whose tropes she’s upending, has a lot of undescribed casual sex. Also, child prostitution figures largely in this story. Also, like any brooding noir character, she chainsmokes. Very serious. But oh god gotta love her standoffishness, and the dark urban topics.
Trust Me, I’m Lying – Mary Elizabeth Summer – funny and serious, here for the sass, the con, the moral ambiguity, and the heartbreak.
The Girl is Murder – Kathryn Miller Haines - funny and serious, here for the WWII home front detective girl who has to move to a new school and investigate a murder among its ranks.
Julia Vanishes – Catherine Egan – YA with mention of the mc having sex – funny and angsty, here for the witty, morally ambiguous main character making bad decisions, also the pureness, the sincerity of the book overall. PAIN. Read this Or Else.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass – Melissa Bashardoust - haven’t read it yet, but I just borrowed it from the library and I hear serious praise and serious feminism. Here for the 17-year-old stepmother with a heart made of glass, the 15 year-old stepdaughter with a body made of snow, complicated relationships, and hard girls who just want to be loved.
The Grisha Trilogy – Leigh Bardugo – sex mentions, rape mention, funny and serious, here for the grumpy old grandma in a teenager’s body Alina Starkov, also Baghra. And the Darkling J. And Genya. Everything. Read this Or Else.
The Language of Thorns – Leigh Bardugo – dark and lush original fairy tale anthology says it all. There is cannibalism. Feminism. Angry lonely girls. Delicious. Read this Or Else.
The Lie Tree – Frances Hardinge – serious but flawless, no romance. Here for the complicated, neglectful father-daughter relationship. Here for the 1800s paleontology. The tackling of ingrained misogyny. The hardcore FEMINISM. The bad choices made J. And of course, the barely-there otherworldliness. Read this or Else.
M.F.K. – Nilah Magruder – Webcomic/graphic novel – serious and slightly funny. Here for the gorgeous art and the standoffish main character. And the softboi sidekick. No romance, so far.
The Flavia Albia detective series – Lindsey Davis – Adult detective series – sex mentions, narrative is scathingly hilarious, but there are serious things. Here for the sardonic Albiola, female detective in Rome, who had a very hard childhood, and at one point in the first book impales a man’s hand on a table with a knife. One key difference from Annie – she is not a cat person, pooh-pooh. Read this Or Else.
The Forbidden Wish – Jessica Khoury – mostly serious, here for immortal sad djinn girl who had to betray her best friend/habiba centuries ago.
A Creature of Moonlight – Rebecca Hahn – mostly no romance, serious and mythical, here for girls who turn into trees and walk their own path. Not of this world. Read this Or Else.
A Wicked Thing – Rhiannon Thomas – serious, no romance in the first book, here for sleeping beauty and serious feminism. Beautiful. Thought-provoking. Read this Or Else.
A Study in Scarlet Women – Sherry Thomas – adult detective series, sex mentions, serious, here for fem Sherlock and feminism.
Girl Waits With Gun – adult detective/police series, serious, vague sex mention, here for sad 30-something mc investigating things in the 1910s. The main character and her sisters were all real people, and the stories in this series follow real cases she solved.
The Name of the Rose – Umberto Eco – Old monk and young monk investigate a murder in an abbey with the best library since Alexandria and uncover the secrets of the universe instead. Sorta. This inspired an snk au of mine that I never got to use :’) HIDDEN LIBRARIES AND SEMIOTICS.
A Northern Light – Jennifer Donnelly – sex mentions, serious, here for servant girl investigating a drowning death, feminism, and forging out on her own.
The Agency – YS. Lee, serious and a little funny, here for the all-female detective agency, the outsider mc detective (hint, she’s not fully white), and Victorian London.
The Lady Grace Mysteries, Middle-Grade (MG) fiction, half-half serious-funny. Here for 14 year old Lady Grace Cavendish, who is the ward and a Maid of Honor of Queen Elizabeth. She solves serious mysteries and untangles political intrigue with her entertainer friend and servant friend. Diary format. I loved this series, BUT ALL BOOKS AFTER THE SIXTH HAVEN’T BEEN PUBLISHED IN THE USA ARGH. I will be buying them on amazon. Sometime.
The Last Namsara – Kristen Ciccarelli – YA with sexual harassment scenes, intense abuse of slaves, very slightly Arab-coded (though wtf is it with the country’s name), with the slave ethnicity slightly Germanic-coded, well-navigated slave-master romance. Asha, a princess whose rendezvous with dragons at age 8 unknowingly caused her capital city to nearly burn to the ground, is now a bitter, callous, kindness-starved, severely-scarred dragon hunter trying to escape arranged marriage to the brutal, abusive commander of her father’s army by hunting the First Dragon. I loved the ship (softish boi, hard girl).
A Thousand Nights – E.K. Johnston – sex mentions, no romance but there is arranged marriage, serious. Here for the best Scheherazade reimagining I’ve ever encountered in my entire short life. Here for the appreciation of women’s work. Here for how the author dealt with the king, who is possessed by a demon, completely – the demon feeds off human creativity and his brides’ life energy. Here for the pre-Islamic tribal Arabic setting and the theology of smallgods, who are usually people who helped the tribe in some way, now deceased. Here for the strength of the unnamed main character, the strength of the love between her and her half-sister, and how her half-sister gets people to pray to her and essentially make her a living smallgod, in this way enabling her to face off against the djinn-king. Here for the beautiful, aching writing. Here for this story that gives voice to the traditionally-voiceless, exalts the nameless numbers of women who create the world. Read this Or Else.

Hey tumblr so I need your help! My school always had one of those “Read Across America” maps with young adult novels or romances or whatever (evidently, I’m American) but I’ve never seen anything comparable for wlw. Josephine Baker (1906–1975) was nineteen years old when she found herself in Paris for the first time in 1925. Overnight, the young American dancer became the idol of the Roaring Twenties, captivating Picasso, Cocteau, Le Corbusier, and Simenon. In the liberating atmosphere of the 1930s, Baker rose to fame as the first black star on the world stage, from London to Vienna, Alexandria to Buenos Aires.
After World War II, and her time in the French Resistance, Baker devoted herself to the struggle against racial segregation, publicly battling the humiliations she had for so long suffered personally. She led by example, and over the course of the 1950s adopted twelve orphans of different ethnic backgrounds: a veritable Rainbow Tribe. A victim of racism throughout her life, Josephine Baker would sing of love and liberty until the day she died.
He Calls Me By Lightning: The Life of Caliph Washington and the forgotten Saga of Jim Crow, Southern Justice, and the Death Penalty by S Jonathan Bass

Caliph Washington didn’t pull the trigger but, as Officer James "Cowboy" Clark lay dying, he had no choice but to turn on his heel and run. The year was 1957; Cowboy Clark was white, Caliph Washington was black, and this was the Jim Crow South.
As He Calls Me by Lightning painstakingly chronicles, Washington, then a seventeen-year-old simply returning home after a double date, was swiftly arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to death by an all-white jury. The young man endured the horrors of a hellish prison system for thirteen years, a term that included various stints on death row fearing the "lightning" of the electric chair. Twentieth-century legal history is tragically littered with thousands of stories of such judicial cruelty, but S. Jonathan Bass’s account is remarkable in that he has been able to meticulously re-create Washington’s saga, animating a life that was not supposed to matter.
Given the familiar paradigm of an African American man being falsely accused of killing a white policeman, it would be all too easy to apply a reductionist view to the story. What makes He Calls Me by Lightning so unusual are a spate of unknown variables—most prominently the fact that Governor George Wallace, nationally infamous for his active advocacy of segregation, did, in fact, save this death row inmate’s life. As we discover, Wallace stayed Washington’s execution not once but more than a dozen times, reflecting a philosophy about the death penalty that has not been perpetuated by his successors.
Other details make Washington’s story significant to legal history, not the least of which is that the defendant endured three separate trials and then was held in a county jail for five more years before being convicted of second-degree murder in 1970; this decision was overturned as well, although the charges were never dismissed. Bass’s account is also particularly noteworthy for his evocation of Washington’s native Bessemer, a gritty, industrial city lying only thirteen miles to the east of Birmingham, Alabama, whose singularly fascinating story is frequently overlooked by historians.
By rescuing Washington’s unknown life trajectory—along with the stories of his intrepid lawyers, David Hood Jr. and Orzell Billingsley, and Christine Luna, an Italian-American teacher and activist who would become Washington’s bride upon his release—Bass brings to multidimensional life many different strands of the civil rights movement. Devastating and essential, He Calls Me by Lightning demands that we take into account the thousands of lives cast away by systemic racism, and powerfully demonstrates just how much we still do not know.
Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life by Jonathan Gould

When we think of Otis Redding, we remember his classic hits, from “The Dock of the Bay” and “Shake” to “Try a Little Tenderness” and “Respect,” a song we often forget that he penned before Aretha Franklin made it famous. We know his music, yet we know very little about his life, which ended tragically at the age of 26, at the height of his career. According to Jonathan Gould, that knowledge gap is a shame because, while Redding might not have been as gifted as Ray Charles or as smooth as Sam Cooke, Otis—not Marvin Gaye, not James Brown, not Stevie Wonder—is “the purest distillation of what we talk about when we talk about ’soul.’”
Now, in this biography, we’ll finally get a fitting look at the unfinished life of the man some call “the King of Soul.” That said, this book is not just about Redding and his music; it is also about the times from which they emerged. Gould never lets us forget that the boundaries between black musicians and white listeners were becoming porous at precisely the moment that racial tensions were at their highest—a theme that remains relevant today.
