as a wrestling and kpop fan I feel obligated to talk about this

the song strong machine j is dancing to is perfect night by le sserafim, a kpop girl group. here's a side by side comparison with a fancam of miyawaki sakura, one of the members. she is legitimately called kami (god) by her japanese fanbase which tells you a lot on what you need to know about her popularity. he was probably paying homage to her as a fellow japanese.

however, the plot thickens. here's another video of a wrestler:

someone look familiar? that's sakura.

sakura, although now an extremely popular kpop idol promoting in korea, has had several side quests in life. she started as a member of hkt48 at just 14, an idol group under the main group akb48 which quite literally has hundreds of members. they run on an "election" system, where the general public gets to vote for their favorite members and the most popular members generally get more opportunities/performances/merch/etc. so to stand out, she had to take some liberties whether it be pretending to be extremely shit at jump roping or have comically bad running form to garner laughs.

it's important to realize that japanese idols are seen more as entertainers rather than performers. rather than focusing their energy on perfecting their singing and dancing, they're more like a jack of all trades working more toward making their audience feel energized.

the clip of sakura wrestling is actually from a drama akb48 broadcasted called tofu pro wrestling where sakura inherits her dad's tofu shop only to find out she could only pay back the debt he left behind if she won a wrestling championship. so not only did sakura, but SEVERAL other members under the akb48 umbrella learn puroresu and perform in front of a live audience. great stuff.

she then goes on to become one of the most popular members of the group and travels to korea in 2018 for an idol competition show called produce 48, which brought together members of akb48 and korean kpop trainees who would be voted into a temporary girl group.

sakura, who was extremely popular before even going on the show, was voted into the final group called iz*one. (there was voting manipulation but sakura would've been in the final group regardless so I won't go into that.)

as an iz*one member she gains a massive korean fanbase while simultaneously maintaining her japanese fans. once iz*one's contract ended in 2021 and disbanded, sakura decided to stay in korea and would later join le sserafim in 2022 where she is now promoting.

all that and she's only 25! I've barely grazed the tip of the iceberg that is sakura's career, but it's honestly a treat whenever i find out about some batshit crazy stuff she's done in her decade-long career.

miyawaki sakura, one of the most popular celebrities in japan, was once a wrestler! something to think about whenever you listen to iz*one/le sserafim.

CIB!YN’s DYNAMICS WITH HER MEMBERS (doesn’t include chaewon and yunjin since we already know their dynamics)

sakura, sakura and yn are the ultimate older sister younger sister duo, they’re arguing one second and besties the next, yn’s very comfortable with sakura and can tell her anything because of how long they’ve known each other, sakura gives yn all her old clothes from the early 2000s and some stuff that she wore during her time in akb48 that can fit yn.

kazuha, yn and kazuha are pretty close since yn can just talk and rant about random things to the girl and kazuha will just listen silently and not interrupt her, yn and kazuha (as said as before) are known for their photoshoots together, they’ve been put together ever since debut and the photo of them in the water together came out.

eunchae, eunchae loves yn because yn is the only member that will always put up with her shenanigans all the time, her and yn made a fake reality show with barbie dolls that they bought and it’s pretty drama filled.

I was wondering if you had any analyses on yosuke's dances in P4D, especially his partner dances wrt his character/personality... or even just generally what you thought of his moves. I think atlus/p-studio enjoy putting more than meets the eye into the choreography for the dances, but i wondered what the account that does really good yosuke analyses thinks. >:) Cheers

Oh wow you're very kind!! but this is also a very high level ask as I am not at all a dance expert and I'm still working my way through all of the dances, but I will do my best! o7

Long post incoming!

I remember reading an interview which said that Yosuke's dance style is very much inspired by male idols with a hip-hop flair, and I can definitely see it in his dance? iirc there was a pretty strong influence of hip-hop in jpop of that era - I'm thinking about Johnny's entertainment boybands which I think pretty much dominated the jpop male idol scene around 2010 - just look at Arashi's Monster dance routine, which imo is a super quintessential dance of that time. Like Jun's breakdance around 0:45, but also more generally, the sort of precise, rapid-pace footwork and moves that is also very evident in both Backside of the TV and Your Affection. I think it really suits him for a few reasons

Yosuke generally has the highest agility stat and tends to be the fastest char (for me at least? but i've also seen enough fics that reference how quick he moves), so it makes sense that this sort of high-pace dance suits him. Obviously Yosuke has a very good sense of beat listening to music all the time in combat and moving with it, so despite his real world clumsiness, he's well equipped to take on the kind of rigorous idol dance style that's typically very demanding to learn and perfect.

At the same time, it also matches his narrative - Yosuke in canon is very familiar with idol culture, both with Risette and Kanamin Kitchen, so it's not too surprising? But what I thought was kind of interesting was that there aren't really any references to male idol groups in world, and even his bedroom in p4au only shows female idol posters and some mainstream American albums. However, in the interview scene at the end of p4d, he mentions to Yukiko that he's tried to copy moves from stuff he's seen. But his dance style is more similar to boy idol bands - with the hip hop influence especially - as opposed to being similar to female idol bands - which tend to be preppier in dance style (see AKB48 for example). (Or just compare Rise's dance with Yosuke's.) So idk if this is a random oversight on Atlus/P-Studio's part, or if Yosuke is a closet male idol enjoyer (which would be very funny but also on brand for him, especially if he's still in the closet).

The other thing about idol music and group idol dance styles more generally is how much emphasis there is on harmony. If you look at the Arashi video again, there's kind of the expectation that all members are dancing in sync with each other. The thing about that sort of group dance is that you don't really have "leads" and "backup" dances, because no one member is really supposed to stand out or take centre stage since they're all equals. And I think that's a fun thing to think about because, you know, Yosuke Rank 10. But it's also in his partner dances with the others - I feel like Yosuke tends to harmonise with the others and their dance styles the most, maybe he's second to Yu? But Yosuke tends to match his dancing to the style of the other person when he joins them in Fever, like in Naoto's or Chie's (caveat, maybe I'm just Yosuke-biased LMAO). I think there's a lot to say about it because on the one hand, his captain ressentiment attitude means he sees his friends as better but he also wants to catch up to them and be their equals! but also, on the other hand, Yosuke doesn't want to stand out? And him keeping his head down is very much in character for him throughout most of the game, so :')

(but also souyo lens time his partner dances with yu is SO GOOD they mirror one another so well and it makes me so weak)

I think my final point is on how idol dancing is kind of on brand for him as well? Yosuke is kind of a vain person - he likes fashionable clothes! He likes to look cool! (and we love him for it!!) - and I think one thing that kind of marks idol dancing compared to, idk, interpretive dancing as an extreme example, is how idol dances tend to emphasize... looking good? The whole point of idols is to sell them on their aesthetics, after all, and good looks are kind of a minimum criteria to being in an idol group. The dances are choreographed to maximise the dancer's appeal, so it's all smooth moves that present them in the best light.

Those are my extremely long thoughts!! but yeah tldr I think his dance style really suits him on every level I can't imagine anything better for him ngl. Anyone with more expert knowledge feel free to pitch in though

Ok, but what is the origin of kawaii culture in Japan? Like surely this has some kind of prewar predecessor, it didn't just burst fully-formed into the popular consciousness in 1990. A lot of Japanese pop-culture stuff has long historical precedent, like how so much of manga is prefigured in ukiyo-e and so on. But what prefigures mascots for everything and AKB48?

Exclusive: Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb Mclaughlin & Sadie Sink Spill Stranger Things 3 Secrets

Classic, gory, fun, sad, bigger – those are just some of the words used by the young cast to sum up “Stranger Things 3” on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show”.

The last time we left Hawkins, it was set in late 1984 and things have somewhat become normal once again. Well, as normal as it gets considering there are killer creatures from the Upside Down that can access our world.

When “Stranger Things 3” premieres on Netflix, the storyline will fast-forward to July 1985. There are new villains and a whole new threat . Having said that, the biggest obstacle that the group of wannabe Goonies are facing aren’t just Demogorgons but something more unnerving – puberty.

As producer Shawn Levy points out, “Our tagline is that ‘One summer can change everything’, but the reality is that growing up doesn’t happen at a constant or consistent speed. People develop in very different ways and at different rates“. To echo SFX, while some might be content playing “Dungeons & Dragons”, others are starting to feel that the kiddy stuff are well behind them.

As part of their Asia promo tour, Hype got the chance to sit down with Noah Schnapp (Will Byers), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Caleb Mclaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), and Sadie Sink (Maxine “Max” Mayfield) to talk about the exciting Netflix series.

Prior to our roundtable interview, the cast of “Stranger Things 3” made an appearance at the Stranger Things Summer Festival event held at Akiba Square.

During the Q&A session, the young actors got to interact with popular Japanese celebrities Ms Yuko Oshima (former group member of girl band AKB48) and comedy duo Speed Wagon (Jun Itoda and Kazuhiro Ozawa). They were also gifted with custom traditional Japanese outfits called HAPPI.

Fans who attended the event got to experience zones and game stalls that were inspired by elements of Summer in 1985 Hawkins, Indiana, and more. We were geeking out real hard but our highlight was, of course, our exclusive interview with the quartet.

How is “Stranger Things 3” different from season 1 and 2?

Caleb: It’s different from the last 2 seasons, which had like a fall-wintery vibe. This one is bright and fun. We see the kids hanging at the Starcourt Mall… It’s essentially the same formula but you can’t tell as a viewer because the storyline is different and there are new characters.

What were your first reactions when reading the script?

Sadie: Usually before reading the script, we hear rumours about what’s going to happen. Especially if there’s something big like a death.

Do you just get your own parts? Or are everyone’s parts included in the script as well?

Sadie: Yeah, we get the full script. It helps us get into the characters.

Gaten: Some people choose not to read everybody’s parts. They just go into their scenes.

Sadie: It make sense too because how is your character supposed to know what is going on with other characters.

Caleb: Sometimes I do that. It helps because I’ll have a natural reaction to the situation, especially when everyone is back together.

What would you say is the biggest change about your characters compared to the last season?

Caleb: I feel like Lucas faces battles differently; in a more composed way.

Sadie: I think Max is now more established in Hawkins. She’s not the new girl anymore. She’s earned her place in the group. She’s not letting Billy push her around anymore. She’s also super confident and that’s why I was drawn to her.

I like that we’re getting to see some girl power through Max and Eleven’s friendship too.

Sadie: Yes, we get to see this strong female friendship when Max kind of takes Eleven under her wing and shows her what it means to be your own individual self and teaches her to have her own style. It’s cool to see Max become her role model in a way.

Of course me and Millie have a genuine relationship off screen as well so I think that chemistry really shows.

Gaten: I think it’s great that the girls aren’t necessarily just the girlfriends.

Sadie: Yeah, they have their own storyline. Max’s purpose wasn’t to be Lucas’ girlfriend. She has her own thing going on and she’s very independent.

What is the craziest rumour or fan theory you’ve heard about your characters?

Sadie: In the beginning, there were a lot of rumours floating around about Max before you’ve seen her on season 2. People were like, ‘who’s this red head chick’ joining the show. Many assumed that she was going to have superpowers like Eleven.

Caleb: Or that you were going to take Mike away.

Gaten: We’ve been there from the beginning. So there’s not much for them to speculate, caused they know the characters already. Coming in later in the show, I can imagine (it being harder for Sadie). Every new addition, fans are going to be skeptical about it.

Sadie: One of the weirdest thing I’ve heard someone say was like ‘Oh, the character is supposed to be tough. But she has red hair, she can’t be tough’. People say the weirdest things.

Eleven is the only one with powers. If you could possess one in real life or as your character, what would it be?

Sadie: I want to be able to teleport. Max will probably like invisibility so she can steal stuff.

Caleb: For Lucas, maybe like Hawkeye in Avengers or something. It’ll be cool to see him be a sharp shooter. Or like Green Arrow too.

Noah: I guess for me, I’ve always wanted to have invisibility cause then you’d get to do anything you wanted. It’d be so fun! Like maybe just walk up into the plane and skip all the queues.

Gaten: For me, I’d like to be a shape-shifter and change into different animals. For Dustin, I think he’d be really cool in manipulating technology. Say there’s a bad guy attacking with missiles, he could just reprogram them with his mind. If a car is coming towards him, he could just turn off the engine.

Noah, your character has gone through some pretty dark encounters. How do you detach once the director yells cut? What about the rest of you guys?

Noah: I separate the two things as much as I can. So usually, after an intense scene, when the director yells cut, I’m never really sad.

Noah: It’s just two different worlds, you know.

Gaten: I think it’s good that you’re able to shed it so quickly cause there are so many performers that hold on to it. Especially when a character that deals so much as Will does.

Sadie: It depends on the scene too. If it’s really emotional, it’s harder.

Gaten: I feel like after those big emotional scenes, everyone is usually very quiet afterwards.

Do you have a favourite storyline for “Stranger Things 3”?

Caleb: I’d say that my favourite parts in this season are the last few episodes.

Before we end this session, can you leave us with a little tease ?

Noah: The ending is very sad.

Gaten: It’s an emotional season and there’s heartbreak.

Sadie: It’s very different from the season two ending. Tears will be shed.

Gaten: More than previous seasons, I feel.

Caleb: The first two seasons were very dark and eerie, while season three is more comical and light-hearted. It is still dark, but it’s different from what I was used to… There’s a really good cliffhanger too.

OOOOOO i'm a favorite follower? i'm so special :) Momo no Hanabira- Ai Otsuka. This song takes me back to listening to it when I was 9 years old, unaware of all my future and current trauma, on my ipod shuffle, swinging from a tree in my front yard, blissful, content. It reminds me of being a teenager and falling in love with my husband, listening to this song. It reminds me of college, when my professor tried desperately to help me find the little sound effect in it, it reminds me of the best and the worst of times and it is the PERFECTEST song ever in its own little BEAUTIFUL package. the shamisen has never sounded so SWEET. i learned an ENTIRE JAPANESE INSTRUMENT JUST TO PLAY THIS FUCKING SONG!!!! Au Revoir- Malice Mizer. I played this with a band for a music competition that got sabotaged and purposely rigged against me because the guy running the competition was the president of the league of legends club at my college and hated my friend because she outed them for sexual harrassment. it was an extremely traumatic and hurtful experience but i fucking refused to let it ruin such a BANGER so i listened to it over and over and sang it so hard in the car once that i almost passed out. DO THE I LOVE YOU- Buck-Tick. SPECIFICALLY the this is Not greatest hits version. nothing fucking bumps like this. it bumps in such a HORNY way. this song sounds like some absolutely SCHNASTY fuckin.

Jirettai- Anzen Chitai. This is the tragic BUMPIN breakup that results after the SCHNASTY fuckin that goes on in DO THE I LOVE YOU. this is where the 80s shoujo drama trauma happens. this is where we put the LAMENT, the PASSION! my husband calls this "japanese ghostbusters." I first heard it in a car with my friend and her japanese mom.

Robinson（ロビンソン）- Spitz. I also heard this in the very same car as Jirettai. Whenever the guitar goes JAAN JAAN JANJAN in the chorus, my friend and her mom would sing just that. When I went to Japan, i met 2 girls who were in a band. They wanted to sing with me, but all i knew were j-rock songs, and they likes stuff like AKB48 and SMAP (I wasn't a smap fan at the time. now i will not shut up about them if you ask me about them). They said "oh, well. I guess we'll play Robinson then." and I was like "ah! i know THAT one!" and we sang together and the harmony was so good that we made our mothers, who were watching on in the same room, cry on each other, and they didn't even know the same language. It was so cute.
