The biggest reason the war on "Happy Holidays" is dumb as fuck is that even in a strictly Christian context, the holidays in question are Christmas and New Year's.
Even the most carefully sheltered religious ignoramous who's never heard of Diwali or Chanukah HAS heard of New Year's Day. You know—that thing that happens a week after Christmas? That's often a government-mandated statutory holiday? Where all the calendars change? So close to Christmas that many businesses, schools, and other institutions often take the days between them off too?
It's so absolutely clear that the grown adults peddling this crap are making something up to get angry about, because Christians have been wishing each other Happy Holidays for centuries. (Twelve whole days of Christmas, and extra events like Epiphany or Feast of the Innocents, too! These days we even get Second Christmas, for the Julian calendar folks!)
They're not angry about "erasing Christmas". Christmas is indelible. They're angry at having to acknowledge literally any other religion as having a right to exist, more or less. They want to live in a theocracy, while simultaneously saying that religious oppression would be terrible if it happened... to them.
I'm so goddamn sick of it. Of people who ask "Which holidays?" as if it's some sort of sick burn, not something that can slide from moderate inanity through to actively bigoted malice.
Keep Christ in Christmas?
Great idea. You start. Love your neighbour and shut the fuck up.

Happy new year!... Again
Bonus Akechi because I forgot the baby I'm sorry
Tumblr media
Akechi's yapping under the cut.
The New Year is the time or day at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count increments by one. Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner. In the Gregorian calendar, the most widely used calendar system today, New Year occurs on January 1 (New Year's Day, preceded by New Year's Eve). This was also the first day of the year in the original Julian calendar and the Roman calendar (after 153 BC). Other cultures observe their traditional or religious New Year's Day according to their own customs, typically (though not invariably) because they use a lunar calendar or a lunisolar calendar. Chinese New Year, the Islamic New Year, Tamil New Year (Puthandu), and the Jewish New Year are among well-known examples. India, Nepal, and other countries also celebrate New Year on dates according to their own calendars that are movable in the Gregorian calendar.
An example of another new year is Chunyipai Losar, the traditional day of offering ( Dzongkha: buelwa phuewi nyim) in Bhutan. It is observed on the 1st day of the last month of the Butanese lunar calendar. This means it usually takes place in January or February in the western calendar. And this year falls on 12th of January. Some people claim that residents of Bhutan made their annual offering of grains to Zhapdrung Ngakwang Namgyel in Punakha on this day. The Trongsa Penlop is said to have led the representatives of eight eastern regions in their offerings, as the Paro Penlop coordinated the people of western Bhutan and the Darkar Ponlop oversaw the people of the south. In this regard, some people place a great significance on this New Year as a marker of Bhutan’s sovereignty and solidarity. However, some scholars contest that no clear evidence of such practice exists. In any case, many feel that before Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal’s unified Bhutan as a state, the local population in some of Bhutan’s valleys celebrated this day as a New Year. As a result, even the government instituted by Zhabdrung in the 17th century, then largely a monastic court, saw this time as an important part of the year. The retirement and appointment of high officials in the government and the monastic body took place mainly during this New Year celebration. This New Year is primarily observed in eastern Bhutan, where it also referred to as Sharchokpé Losar, or New Year of the eastern Bhutanese. However, the observance of this New Year is not limited to eastern Bhutan and today with easy communication facilities, migration of people and intermarriages between various regions of Bhutan, people all over Bhutan observe this New Year. Like other Bhutanese seasonal festivals marking a new season, the Chunyipai Losar falls around the Winter Solstice. It also falls after the agricultural work for one season is completed and before the new harvest cycle begins. Thus, it is a seasonal celebration which is aligned well with the agrarian populace.
At the end of the day this is all inane information that the artist is using to justify the fact that they are posting this drawing 12 days late and as a means to share their culture despite the fact that the artist themselves are very out of touch with thier culture and in fact forgot that it was chunyipi losar until they were reminded by thier family and did little to observe or celebrate the day outside of baking a cake with a concerningly large amount of butter.

Happy 400th Anniversary (and one day) to the First Folio of Shakespeare's Plays.
Quote from the Wikipedia article about it:
The printing of the Folio was probably done between February 1622 and early November 1623, and the book was entered into the Stationers' Register on 8 November 1623 (Julian calendar).
The very existence of the First Folio kinda makes me want to cry happy tears every time I think about it. It was published about six years and some time after Shakespeare's death, and without it, about half of his plays would have been completely lost.
And the reason it exists at all is because his friends and colleagues did the work compiling his plays and raising the money to get the book printed.
Shakespeare himself may have doubted that his work had any worth. But his friends cared enough about his legacy to make sure his plays were remembered.

On March 3rd 1883 three hundred inhabitants of the remote Shetland island of Foula were on the point of starvation as the first supply boat of the year reached the stormbound community.
Foula, often described as the "Edge Of The World" is our most remote inhabited island. It is situated in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 20 miles to the west of the Shetland mainland. It is an island of crofting townships, breath-taking sheer cliff drops, and a wealth of wild flowers and wildlife.
Over a century ago, in 1881, Foula had a population of 267, mostly employed in fishing...at the last census in 2001 that figure had dropped to just 38.
On March 3rd 1883 the Shetland Times published this;
The Weather and Mails – Foula
Nine weeks have now expired since our last mail was landed, and all our resources are almost exhausted. Sugar and tobacco have been all done for more than a fortnight, and tea, coffee, etc, are now done also. Those who had a little meal to spare have helped those who had none, a thing often done in Foula, but if the weather does not moderate we will soon be all alike. The boat has been in readiness now for some time to go to Walls for supplies, and as the weather has become a little more moderate today they are going to make a start, so we hope that they may get safe through, and a chance to return again soon. But we doubt if the mail boat will be able to cross today yet, as the wind still inclines to the westward.
There isn’t much more than this about their plight, but it seems that same day they breathed a sigh of relief as a boat must have made it to Mainland and back successfully.
Today crofting as well as fishing are the main activities, half the population living at Hametoun in the south east and the remainder to be found at Ham near Ham Voe on the east coast. The island is not connected to any mainland electricity grid system. In 1987 a community electricity scheme was constructed, comprising a 3.3kV island grid which linked diesel generators, a wind turbine and a hydroelectricity scheme to the island’s properties. This scheme gradually fell into disrepair and has undergone a major refurbishment, funded primarily through grants.
Before refurbishment, the entire island's power was supplied by one of the two diesel generators which operated between approximately 7.20am and 00.30am. That’s not to say they were without power for the, just under 7 hours the generator is off, a battery/inverter system was installed between 2006 and January 2007, a solar charging array helps top up the batteries as well . The system was fully commissioned at the beginning of March 2007 and already the islanders not only have continuous power ( instead of the previous 17 hours per day) but are noticing considerable savings in diesel fuel use. Since diesel has to be shipped in by ferry (and often the weather is too bad for the ferry to run for up to 3 weeks on end) this of huge value.
An interesting feature of the island's people is that they still observe the old Julian calendar, replaced in 1752 in Britain by the present Gregorian system which deleted 11 days from the year. Remote areas of the country kept to the old calendar, adding an extra day in 1800, which was a leap year, and some parts of Shetland continued to observe festivals 12 days after the dates in the new calendar. The most remote areas kept to the old calendar longest, and the people of Foula still celebrate Christmas on 6 January and New Year's Day on 13 January
Travel to the island is by sea or air and is completely dependent on suitable weather conditions.
A wee bit more, and a short video can be found at the link below.

Important Facts about Lughnasadh from an Irish Celtic Reconstructionist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spelling and Pronunciation
OI. Lughnasadh (Loo-na-sa), sometimes spelled Lughnasa or Modern Irish Lúnasa. Not to be confused with other harvest festivals like Lammas.
Dates
Most reconstructionists celebrate Lughnasadh on July 31st - August 1st from sundown to sundown by the Gregorian calendar, while others choose to celebrate the transitional period between the months as they would have been by the Julian calendar (about 13 days later by the Gregorian calendar).
Traditionally this festival likely would have happened as the grains were ready for harvesting or possibly even when the wild bilberries were ripe (as some scholars mention that if the grains were not ripe they would still preform a ritualized ‘first harvesting’ but it is possible this tradition came after the festival was firmly tied to a calendar date.)
Importance in the Mythos
In the mythologies it is well documented that this festival coincides with Lugh’s funeral games in honor of his foster-mother Tailtiu, known as Aonach Tailteann. In the mythologies she is said to have died of exhaustion after clearing the plains of Ireland for agricultural needs. The first documented instance of Lughnasadh in the mythologies was in the Wooing of Emer, Tochmarc Emire, which makes sense given the importance of marriages at this time of the year. It is not known specifically but widely speculated that the curse of the Ulstermen by Macha took place at a horse race for this festival.
In later time periods it is common to see a form of struggle, normally between the ‘protective’ forces and ‘destructive’ forces. The modern equivalent being the struggle between Saint Patrick and Crom Dubh but this is likely a reflection of an early struggle between Lugh and Balor (which I previously mentioned in my info-dump on Bealtaine).
Celebration Traditions
Aonachs, funeral games, have (to the best of our knowledge) been a custom in Ireland since the bronze age and were practiced on and off into the middle ages. They had both personal and community functions and occurred in three stages. Stage one was the funeral proceedings themselves. They would last one to three days, likely depending on the importance of the individual in question. Mourning songs and chants were participated in by both the attendees and the Druids. The second stage was for proclaiming of laws. Aonachs were a time when universal peace between túaths was declared. The third stage was that of Cuiteach Fuait, games that tested mental and physical abilities. These games included the well known horse and chariot races, wrestling games, boxing, high jumps but also competitions in strategy, singing, story telling and between various skilled craftsmen.
It was incredibly common for marriages to be arranged and preformed during this festival. More well known ‘trial marriages’ (lasting a year and a day) were still preformed at this festival up until the 13th century. It is likely that the coupling occurring at this time of year had an effect on the relationship to births seen at Imbolg (which falls 9 months later).
MacNeill, a leading scholarly expert on the festival, notes that a ritualistic bull sacrifice was made at this festival and the bull would then be eaten. I could not find any definitive evidence to support the idea, but I think it was likely that bulls in general would be culled from the herd at this point in the year to supply the feast.

The First Day of Julius Caesar
Hello and welcome to the first day of my series! I choose to start not with a common misconception, but with a personal story that includes a very uncommon misconception that was all my fault. I thought it would fun to start things off.
When I was in eighth grade, I was a fan of Julian the Apostate. It was definitely because I went to a Catholic school while I disliked Catholicism. Young me was like "Omg I relate so much to Julian the Apostate!!"
(nowadays I feel quite embarrassed by my Julian the Apostate phase)
Anyway, I was in religion class and I was explaining Julian the Apostate to my religion teacher (as if a Catholic religion teacher would like him). Suddenly and to my utmost surprise, she was like "I know that person! He is my favourite historical figure!"
I had not expected the average person to know about Julian the Apostate, but I guessed that my religion teacher, as part of her training, had to learn about the religious history of Rome and that's where she learned about him.
My guess turned out to be very wrong. The more my religion teacher talked about him, the more I started to realise that we were not talking about the same person. Because Julian the Apostate definitely had nothing to do with the Julian Calendar or alea iacta est or the Ides of March and uh oh my religion teacher got him confused with Julius Caesar!
I was so baffled and embarrassed on her behalf that I didn't correct her. I never saw her again after eighth grade, so for all I know, her favourite historical figure might still be Julian the Apostate, the last pagan Roman emperor who was very influential in the end of the Roman Republic.
I'm actually quite concerned for her, because she was definitely a Julius Caesar fan in all the wrong ways, if you get what I mean. Which was made even worse by the fact that she was a religion teacher! I don't think Jesus would've been a Julius Caesar fan in that way. Actually, I don't think Jesus would've been a Julius Caesar fan, period.
Moral of the story, Julian the Apostate is NOT to be confused with Julius Caesar. One is named Flavius Claudius Julianus and the other one is named Gaius Julius Caesar. One lived, laughed, loved during the fourth century AD and the other lived, laughed, loved during the first century BC.
Tumblr media
Don't be like this. And don't be like me either, who didn't correct my religion teacher out of embarrassment. I am making this series to undo the harm I caused that day haha.
I have a special interest in ancient Rome, and not a PhD. I am just some random Canadian teenager. I will try my best to be as historically accurate as I can in this series, but I'm human (and nothing human is alien to me) and I can make mistakes. Don't see anything I say as infallible, okay? And feel free to correct me. After all, this series is about correcting mistakes.
Thank you and I'll see you tomorrow with some actually common misconceptions about Julius Caesar!

Yan!Julius Caesar Random Headcanons
❝ 📜— lady l: I love writing these random headcanons and if you guys want more historical characters feel free to send them! If you're curious about how he is yandere, I posted a general headcanon of him, which you can read by clicking here. Here are historical facts and some additional ones from my head. I hope you like it and good reading!! ❤️
❝tw: not entirely historically accurate and perhaps murder (?).
Tumblr media
Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC and became an important Roman military and political leader. His conquest of Gaul (present-day France) and his successful campaigns contributed to his rise to power.
In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was appointed dictator for life by the Roman Senate. This move sparked concern among senators, leading to a plot that resulted in his assassination on March 15, 44 BC, known as the "Ides of March". The man did not last long as a dictator.
Julius Caesar played an important role in reforming the Roman calendar. The Julian calendar, introduced in 45 BC, was an adaptation of the lunar calendar to the solar year, forming the basis of the modern Gregorian calendar. So much so that the month of July is in his honor.
Julius Caesar formed a political alliance known as the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus. They shared power and influence to advance their political and personal agendas. It didn't last long because soon they started fighting each other for power. A yandere obsessed with power, I dare say.
Julius Caesar is known for writing "Commentaries on the War in Gaul", also called as Commentarii de Bello Gallico, a series of accounts of his campaigns in the region. These writings offer valuable information about military tactics and life at that time. A great military commander and also a great fanfic writer.
There are reports that say that when he was 30 years old, he passed in front of a statue of Alexander the Great and wept because he had reached the same age and had not conquered as much as the Macedonian King. An inferiority complex, I would say.
The title "Caesar" became a dynastic name used by many Roman leaders after Julius Caesar. The first Roman Emperor, Augustus, was his nephew and adopted heir, and he adopted the title "Caesar" as part of his name. A curious fact is that many Brazilians have Caesar (César in portuguese) in their name.
In addition to his military achievements, Julius Caesar had a deep taste for literature and writing. He frequently exchanged letters and discussed poetry with various intellectuals of the day. A true cultured man and a renaissance ahead of time.
The death of Julius Caesar was one of the key events that contributed to the fall of the Roman Republic and the subsequent rise of the Roman Empire. His legacy has had a lasting impact on history and politics. Our man is credited as one of the greatest military commanders of all time.
Rumor has it that Julius Caesar had a secret superstition of avoiding black cats, believing them to bring bad luck. This contrasted with his image as a fearless leader. Poor kitty, so many powerful men were afraid of cats.

Hi! I was wondering if you could write about the M6 having baby fever? It can be nsfw and or sfw, I don't really care! Thank you!
Hi, my fellow julianist-smutter! As before, I'll randomly pick the spicy level for each character and write them in whatever-my-mind-blurts-out-first-order. The adult themes will be on a properly flagged reblog!
Key: ◇Random/cute/funny stuff; ♡romanticism/physical affection/teasing; ♧light smut&fluff; ♤hic sunt DONGS, minors def nope out
~♡~
[F!reader]
Portia keeps getting home late without any reasonable explanation. When pressed she blurts ovious lies, so you start to grow suspicious, then jealous. One day it gets the best of you, and you decide to follow her...
...up until the magic shop?! Is she...? And Asra??? You hear them talking quietly, so you sneak in from the backdoor. Portia seems... distressed? Hopeful...? Asra is explaining something complex from a big, old book.
Days later you get that book with an excuse, and magic helps you find the page they were looking at. The spell seems very complicated. Some kind of ritual that involves two women, a man, some fresh rainwater and nine full moon cyc...
Oh.
Oh.
Blood flushes to your face and somewhere else. You slam the book shut in embarrassment, and put it back. You're not sure about how to talk with Portia, for your hart is full of a warmth your words can't express.
You decide to let her be the one talking about it, when she'll feel ready.
~♡~
Nadia keeps pulling out pictures of when she was young, talking about all of her fondest childhood memories and how blessed is an home full of children.
She gets you to se Pepi's new litter, and you see her melt internally as she holds one of the tiniest fluffy balls.
One day you find her and Natiqua with Nadia's nephew. They've come to visit even though she went to see the newborn just few weeks ago. With an excuse, Natiqua hands you the little one, who grabs your hair and doesn't let go. The sisters laugh, whispering something in Pakran. God where's Julian when you need him.
One day she gifts you a beautiful calendar. It's gilded in gold and powered lapis, with beautiful illustrations of the two of you each month. Some days are marked. This time Julian's around, and bursts out laughing when he recognizes a fertility pattern.
Looks like you're gonna do this.
Lucio is super happy. He's always wanted to be the cool uncle.
Little does he know, Noddy has a comprehensive list of what games, tales and shenanigans will and won't be allowed.
~♧~
You and Lucio have a pregnancy scare. He panics, cries that he's too cool and young to be a dad (he's not, he's 40). Disappears hunting in the woods for a week.
He must have met his mother, because when he comes back at the Palace his left cheek is red and swollen.
Thank the gods it was just a scare.
The days after, Lucio starts to act weird. You caught him staring at you with a dumb dreamy smile.
He tells you he bought new animals from the red market. You're expecting crocpdiles, but fing wourself surrounded by hundreds of the cutest ducklings you've ever saw.
Mercedes, Melchior and Pepi are -burp- very happy of this.
You spend two days consoling Lucio.
Then he brings home ten "kittens".
They're tiger cubs.
Mercedes and Melchior happy.
Pepi very not happy.
Nadia and Portia extremely not happy.
When he arrives with a baby dolphin to substitute the vampire eels, Nadia snaps and tell him to go make a baby already if he so wants small things around him
That evening, you enter your room to find him laying on your bed, rose petals all around you, magical windchimes dangling over the bed.
"It MUST BE a great idea, Noddy had it!"
~♧~
Asra is the one who doesn't realize he has baby fever. Everyone else knows he has it, everyone is lowkey laughing about it, but god fkrbjd someone makes him notice.
You are now subscribed to detailed reports of Asra's paternity dreams. He goes on and on describing the beautiful white haired baby he dreamt, they were sleeping on his chest, with a cute pijama with small red foxes embroided on it. Each day he adds new details.
Every morning you wake up to a different, exotic breakfast in bed. "I figure you wanted chestnuts with spiderhoney" "I got you yak salty milk with spices!" "Hey, I brought you the deer horn flour sourdough you asked me for... what do you mean you didn't asked me for it? I deamed you were craving it?! Again?"
He's also all over you, night and day. If it was for him, you'd never leave the magic shop.
He takes every chance he gets to hug your belly. Now you're both used to him falling dead asleep there after going down on you. Sometimes he gives tiny kisses on your belly as he sleeps, and you smile while passing your fingers through his hair.
When you finally confronts him about it, he blushes violently and denies everything.
"So, if I told you you can take me now and do as you please, hre on the shop's counter without even locking the door, you wouldn't do it?"
He does it.
~♢~
Julian has worked with quite a number of babies, lately. Thanks to Nadia, now people eat better and are healthier, so they enjoy their life -and Vesuvia's nightlife- way more. This lead to a massive wedding season, and for the first time in his life the women and men who send for Julian night and day aren't lovers (or scorned spouses), but anxious parents of chubby newborns.
It's a lot of work, but for the first time in forever he's strangely not complaining about it. The doctor sleeps very little, but has a constant dumb grin. He is also very confused.
Tired like, he told Asra to "Open wide the mouth, vessel's coming!" while going in with a tongue depressor to take a look at his sore throat. Mouth free, Asra winked. "As big as I remember you Jules, maybe vessel IS an exaggeration"
Julian's house is now full on tiny gifts from the babies (and their parents): handprints on canvas, first drawings (he SWEARS that black spot behind red scribbles is his eye-patch), even a little elephant doll a two year old was adamant about giving him. "I'll put it aside for when he'll want it back, I'm positive it will happen"). You could SWEAR though, that there's a note of horror in his voice when he says so.
As usual, the nsfw ones will be in THIS reblog :)

Donald and Daisy with their kids (Huey, Dewey and Louie and April, May and June Duck) celebrate Easter - Disneyland Easter Celebration and Easter Costumes - Happy Birthday to Huey, Dewey and Louie - Duck comics and Duckverse
Happy Easter to everyone and if someone asks me, I know that it has passed, but Easter is not celebrated only on one day, but depending on the calendar it can be celebrated twice (Gregorian and Julian calendar), and it is usually celebrated when Jewish Passover and Muslim Ramadan Eid in progress.
As you know, Easter is celebrated because on that day Jesus Christ, after the third day since he died on the cross, was resurrected from the dead and proved that there is life after death, only faith is needed for that (whoever believes, let someone believe) and most Christians celebrate it, although it depends on the calendar when exactly it is celebrated. And usually the symbols are decorated colored eggs (especially red), chicks hatching from eggs, also ducks, as well as Easter bunnies that bring gifts for good children. I'm not a fan of Disneyland, nor am I a fanatic, although Disneyland in Tokyo in Japan makes good events, including for Easter when the mascots dress up in Easter costumes.
Yes, as inspired by the images from Disneyland Tokyo I drew Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck (Donald's nephews) as well as April, May and June Duck (Daisy's nieces-the Dutch comic version of Donald Duck) in Easter costumes, with the fact that I added costumes for Daisy's nieces in my own way. I did a redraw from an actual representation of the triplets mascots from Disneyland holding the Easter eggs they made and carrying them over their heads. Unless they break it. Just like their uncle Donald, Daisy and her nieces also lay eggs, as well as keep the chicks that hatched from the eggs, as well as the Easter bunny. I drew mostly in my own way.
I hope you like this drawing and this idea and feel free to like and reblog this, just please don't copy my same ideas without mentioning me! Thank you! Also, happy birthday to Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, who celebrate on April 15th! Happy birthday to them, the best trio! And happy Easter to everyone!
And yes, this is a gift for my friend, dear @boingodigitalart , who is a Disneyland fan and I hope you like this. Happy late Easter!

WAIT WHAT she actually animates beyond the door even tho we can’t see her after we talk to her? I wonder if the devs had originally had her accessible for a time
SHE DOES! it's just a few seconds looking at each paintings, and you can see her through the focus if you stand close to the vault door, so she's very much there, and she's very much walking around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now since she doesn't have anywhere else to go (that we know of) I'm assuming she stays in the vault until Aloy brings Sylens "to heel" as she says. Thing is, you're not supposed to stay in an art vault for very long periods of time, because the air quality and humidity needs to be very exact for art to be preserved, the gasses in the air are not ideal for human lungs. When i visited a museum with my university, we were allowed entry to one of the storage vaults, to see how conservation works, and how art pieces are stored when not on display, and IIRC you're not supposed to stay there for more than... an hour, maybe 2 at a time? so that makes me curious as to how much of Tilda's body has been altered with the nano-tech the Zeniths have. (I haven't played burning shores yet, so i have no idea if more lore is revealed there, but my guess is that we learn a bit more about them)
Like the paintings were already really old when Tilda got her hands on them, the oldest piece being Lidded ewer, by Adam van Vianen, 1614, and the Aloy being born in 3021, that makes the piece at least 1427 years old by the time Aloy sees it, compared to it's 410 years today in our timeline. that is impressive conservation considering no-one was there to monitor the vault and it's content at all. like in comparison, art that is 1427 years old to us, is from 597 ad, that's when England adopted the Julian calendar, so wer're talking Byzantine art period, like the Hagia Sophia was built between 532-37 AD. and as a visual reference to what a lot of western art looked like around that time, here is a mosaic panel of Empress Theodora, from around the 540s, in the church of San Vitale in Ravenna.
Tumblr media
like this is the span of time we're talking about, this is so fucking old, and i just fhjdshafjkds have a lot of thoughts around that.
ofc we can assume that conservation tech was pretty evolved from what it is today, but i still believe human hands would have a large part in conservation... as an art-history student, i just have a lot of thoughts around Tilda and her vault FJKDSJLKF

Glad Lucia!
Saint Lucia's Day, December 13th (the winter solstice in the Julian calendar) is a celebration of light in the Nordic countries, mostly in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
The tradition is named after the Italian Saint Lucia of Syracuse.

Christmas Botanicals Series: Black Hellebore
Next up in the christmas botanicals series is the christmas rose, also known as black hellebore. Hellebore is a flowering perennial with evergreen leaves in the famously poisonous Ranunculaceae family which also contains aconites (wolfsbane), delphiniums, meadow rues, clematis species, and ranunculus (ranging from wild buttercups to ornamental flowers).
Hellebore contains saponins, cardiac glycosides, and other toxins. While ingestion of hellebore may not be deadly to humans, it is incredibly unpleasant. Symptoms include contact dermatitis, burning skin, burning of the mouth and throat, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.
Tumblr media
Hellebore was one of the first documented chemical weapons used in warfare. The Greeks used the potently poisonous leaves to taint the entire water supply of the sacred city of Kirrha in 585 BCE to end a 10-year siege. It did not kill the residents but incapacitated them with vomiting and diarrhea while the Greek army invaded and slaughtered the entire population by the sword.
Hellebore has been venerated as a powerful plant by multiple ancient civilizations and was included in medical texts by the likes of Hippocrates and Theophrastus.
Black hellebore eventually became associated with christmas due to its evergreen leaves and naturally blooming in winter near the older date of christmas from the Julian calendar. Like mistletoe, the association is likely older than christianity and it was also brought in the home during the dark of winter to protect from evil spirits, ghosts, witches, and illness, but unlike mistletoe hanging in the roof rafters, hellebore was supposedly strewn on the ground with the rushes. Like hanging mistletoe, people in the British Isles and Europe continued the protective practice after converting to the new religion. Today the practice has changed to decorating with hellebore flowers for christmas.
