39 Best Websites to Find Free Textbooks, Research Papers, Study Guides, and Books
Whether you’ve just received a long list of textbooks you need for a specific uni class or are looking for a particular book/research paper for a high school project, books (and journal subscriptions) can be expensive.
The good news is that there are plenty of resources online where you can find free PDF versions of most written materials, starting with Atkinson & Hilgard’s Introduction to Psychology and ending with Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Note that although some of the websites below provide access to copyright-free texts only, or texts that publishers/authors have agreed to share freely, others have been accused of internet privacy.
However, many people see open access practices as morally acceptable, especially considering the unsustainable prices of academic textbooks and papers.
To quote a recent paper on the topic:
"Since shadow libraries are a product of the cooperation between scholars, who contribute texts and other resources (such as donations, volunteer work, etc.), shadow libraries represent a ‘bottom-up’, radical approach to open access: a physical approximation of the Platonic ideal of knowledge sharing that would exist if there were no legal, economic, or institutional barriers to the circulation of scholarly knowledge."

Lately I've been thinking about the ways that families, and society, just aren't taught to celebrate queer people.
Probably the most significant life change that my sister experienced as a young adult was getting married to her husband. They are both lovely people, and their marriage was celebrated by an expensive formal ceremony surrounded by friends and family. There was catering and beautiful clothing and a hired band and dancing and photographers. My sister and her husband were surrounded by people who loved them, and were expressing their love and their joy. It was considered normal and natural for the occasion to be marked, and marked well.
The most significant life change I've experienced to this point in adulthood has been coming out as trans. Like my sister, I bought outfits for the occasion (but wardrobe essentials rather than a wedding dress). Also like my sister, I filled out paperwork to change my legal name (although the process was significantly longer and more expensive in my case, and the change was met with confusion and annoyance rather than congratulations). The similarities ended there. There was no party. No one congratulated me. There was no sense of celebration. Just the relief of "Thank hell the paperwork's over with," and the exhaustion of having to repeatedly remind disinterested relatives about names and pronouns and Gender Studies 101. Years later, most of my family still misgenders me behind my back, and frequently to my face. Not "on purpose." They just don't care enough to learn.
But hot damn, coming out means something, motherfucker. Queer self-discovery is hard and it is long, and it is an achievement. It deserves to be recognized, and to be celebrated.
Looking back, I wish I had celebrated. I wish I had dressed up and insisted on a family dinner at a nice restaurant. I wish I had told people to send me congratulatory greeting cards. I wish I had demanded to be celebrated. But it didn't occur to me, much less to my family members. That's the extent to which we are taught to ignore the significance of queer experiences. I went through a journey that transformed my life, and it didn't even occur to me to celebrate.
And even if it had, I would have had to celebrate alone, at least in spirit. Because the same people who were so excited to show up and celebrate my sister's marriage, this major milestone of her adulthood, just fundamentally did not care about the milestone I had reached. They barely acknowledged it; it didn't match their own experiences, and so they didn't recognize its importance. Crucially: they didn't offer me congratulations or celebration, because they were never taught to. And that's a pile of rubbish. All this to say:
Celebrate queer family & friends with the same gusto you celebrate cishets.
Bitch.

Not sure if this is still current, but I was directed to check out your page by someone! If you ware available to help, I'm looking for a fic that once was on ao3. Bamf Stiles and the sheriff both get abducted with some people, and they get taken to this warehouse. Stiles stays strong throughout it and it does flashbacks to the pack. Stiles e is up fighting, and BBEG ends up speaking this blurb about the BH pack. An archer that never misses, a banshee that resurrects the dead, but the most peculiar is the one who wears a red hood. I'm sorry if this has already been asked. I couldn't find it through multiple searches!
Glad you found it!
Hide Of A Life War by Etharei | 26.1K | Explicit
“We have received confirmation that there is a hostage situation in progress at a warehouse compound two hours out of Los Angeles, following a multiple-vehicle pileup on Highway 101 this morning...”
The one in which Stiles has lived to (legal) adulthood and, along the way, become a bit of a badass himself.

I'm still trying to see this complexity that TG has, and that's why TG stans like them?? Alicent changes her opinion and personality every hour, is the complexity of her still having any consideration for Rhaenyra? not have imagined that a war would start? or just have the same crying expression? Please....!! What complexity does Helaena have? supposedly having dragon dreams and not knowing how to interpret them? the girl doesn't say anything in 1S and everyone just thinks she's weird, she doesn't do ANYTHING! Aemond's complexity is that he was bullied and became a presumptuous arrogant who killed his nephew? and I'm not even going to talk about Aegon..... he's an abusive drunk but yes.... he's a complex character
A)
I think that "interesting" for them is actually"potential for high drama, spectacle, and foolishness just because" for some TG stans who say the greens are more interesting. Yes, the green side is actually a complex group AND they rely on fear (amongst themselves and sometimes against the blacks) & strategy...because they have to strategic in order to try to justify some of their actions or wrest the power Rhaenyra's allowed or could accrue at court. To wittle her already-given status as heir to a more passive role. And beyond-court, they wished to convince the realm that Aegon was the rightful king both before and a little after he's crowned. The greens basically had the task to work past the whole "my heir should rule after me" deal that many lords wanted to stay as solid and meaningful as possible by precedent while also arguing on the precedent set by the GC of 101...which was itself a vote based on the adulthood as well as maleness of the candidate chosen. So, again they had to be strategic and shady and underhanded. And that will inevitably give us more drama.
Funny. Ironic.
We already know that the greens were not that successful with the convincing part even with Rhaenyra at Dragonstone and their long success at isolating her, bc it is only Alicent's move to hide Viserys' body, imprison courtiers and servants, hurry to search for Aegon that enables the greens to take the throne at the end AND Rhaenyra still was able to have many more supporters fighting before and after her death for her and her sons' claims.
Which if this is why you like the greens and not bc you think Aegon deserves the throne or ay sort of leadership [bc we see how unwilling and determined he was to not allow his grandfather to actually try to rule him in canon for the very paradigm that develops from Otto-Alicent's style & aims, they created their own monster], valid. I admit, they make the perfect antagonists & foils to the blacks and they do what they are supposed to do.
B)
People, not just TGs, have cited Alicent's past affecting how she views her own and Rhaenyra's motherhood, that chain of abuse. I'm fine with this, this is true. As for Aegon, I wrote a whole master post for what I think is his "deal" HERE, which is long but you can really sum it up as him trying to prove how great of a leader and man he is in lieu of the all the years he's been on the side and Rhaenyra was Viserys' heir. Yeah his life and misery and nastiness is in part bc Alicent wishes to prepare him to become king and "peacefully" reestablish the order of patriarchal feudal primogeniture/order so she'd not have to confront her own suffering and still materially benefit from it in "exchange". This sentence in itself reflects more on Alicent's complexity than Aegon's.
Aemond? Show!him, as presented, is interesting in that he's going to show a sort of vulnerability from his inflexible role as his side's militant "guard" and his worth being drawn mostly from that. He is there to be the support to Aegon's claim. hamliet describes what I am saying well. "Love is a transaction for the Hightowers". He seeks to "prove" himself and tries to make the glory of a warrior replace real love, but it can never so he's a ball of terror.
And love is a transaction, conditional and more so than on the black side because the greens really rely on putting their children's bodies to some sort of use, from Alicent to Otto to Aegon himself and there is no recourse or sign of deep bonds where each understands the other, comforts each other, reaffirms their emotions etc., or tries to make them happy just for the sake of it formed between any green member. (prob should have made this part part of the 1st paragraph but idk how to):
Helaena's body is made into a breeding machine for Aegon's claim for Otto
Aegon is a tool for Otto's desire to move the crown how he wants and is thus not really asked to be a great leader so much as it there & take his orders/suggestions
Alicent was a Helaena for Otto
Alicent uses her kids to stick it to Rhaenyra (show & book) or else ignores them bc of the troubled context from how they existed even as she genuinely loves them
Daeron--if the show will show that dynamic b/t Daeron and Ormund--is suggested to be more of a tool for his way into high prestige behind Alicent and Aegon's own rise, which is why Daeron's sent to Oldtown in the first place, away from his own family for years...yes I know about fosterage, but I'm speaking to the effects this has on the actual bonds b/t these family member s being reduced to transactions towards their goal towards power
So this troubling, repression, and denial of love is itself intoxicating, and thrilling to people who even don't have to be part of any team. I don't blame them.
C)
This issue for me is then:
Alicent could have been a lot more coherent without the inherent benevolent sexism of her becoming Rhaenyra's only friend and underdeveloped writing that makes her a lot less rational, deliberate, & mentally vulnerable to manipulation than she was in the book....all of which undermines her "complexity" bc she becomes less active as a character much sooner than she does in the book
people say all this ethically justifies the greens' actions, determine that their moral examinations of psycho-social conditions yield the correct and only conclusions to then just reveal that they just want their thoughts to be the general thought in contrary to the evidence in text, or hide behind their real biases and need for validation of those biases through the greens
Don't get me wrong, the black side aren't angels and do heinous actions...but it is simply true that they do not create the conditions for the war to begin and are also reacting to the usurpation.
Moreover, the blacks are pretty open when they can be to be about their actions and Rhaenyra is also already the heir. But the show didn't explore her life as a mother, what her relationship to womanhood as a mother AND heir looks like without Daemon there, or her kids' development after episode 5:
Rhaenyra being reduced to her body (advertisement of "Realm's Delight"; affairs and talk of them)
her kids' understanding, more of this from episode 6 and how exactly they interacted with Alicent's sons...how does Aegon enlist them and their frustrations against Aemond and from their perspective; court interactions, including those with Viserys and Harwin or any of the Strongs; education
Rhaenyra's perceived lack of ability that really just comes from her society evaluating her gender
[book] how she forms bonds with women around her, her relationship with Daemon and their journey towards each other, her relationship with the other Velaryons (Corlys and Laenor)
Daemon as a father -> how he "settles" but not really -> how he navigates/learns to raise another life form(s) & instill pride in their heritage and family after years of his beef with Viserys and losses and his resentments he tried to allay or "make up for" through social advancement and by becoming a warrior/has moved for mainly his own validation [idk how to say this concisely]
how he met and developed whatever relationship he had w/Laena...Corlys and Rhaenys' reactions to that (yes, bring Daemon & Laena back from Essos sooner)
The blacks comparatively do not have to be as underhanded and sneaky, and yet you will also have green stans argue that they are entitled, malicious, terrible threats to a perceived order (a projection--the greens are more that bc they are going against the king's word and what I said above about heirs and precedents).
This and majorly bc of how much opportunity we lost from the writing of this show focusing on developing the greens is also why they appear as "boring" or uninteresting while overbearing, scheming, manipulative agents of destruction at the same time to some people, even though they have more than their fair share of drama and angst from the very hierarchies they are perceived to totally benefit from.

I see Laena casting discourse again. They really did age her up unnecessarily, and I do think it was to communicate how bad the whole picking child bride thing is while making her a suitable (young) match for Daemon. I genuinely remember the sheer disbelief that she was teen Laena.
Tumblr media
Milly and Emily are Rhaenyra and Alicent from ages 14 to 20, respectively, somewhere in that timeline they become Emma and Olivia's versions of the characters. Nova is Laena from 12 to about 15, and then from 16 to 20-ish, she's played by Savannah, who then passes over to Nanna until 26, Laena is at best 26 when she dies. It's a less similar time frame for Laenor who , as much as I love young Laenor, should've been played by the same (teen) actor as he and Rhaenyra are the same age.
Tumblr media
Back to Laena, I think they should've just casted younger and kept 1 Laena for youth and one Laena for adulthood like the other girls. Yes, she's younger but not young enough to need that much of a difference between episodes 1 and 5. I'm not promoting the sick comedy of Daemon and Youngest Laena, but that's the general point. You can't want to show the world we're in with Viserys and Rhaenys and then falter when it's Daemon's turn. Those actresses do not have a 4 year age gap. Even casting an older actress in both parts but changing their styling would make sense.
I'm not upset because I adore every Laena actor. They looked and found the prettiest actors they could, and they DIDN'T DISAPPOINT, but it was biased storytelling.
I think this was a case where hiring a young actress and allowing costumes and acting to tell a story would've worked beautifully.
Another way it would've worked was seeing as production and filming takes so long, hiring a young actress and filming baby laena at the start and teen Laena at the end of filming.
Are there no black 14/15/16 year old actors to hire?
I also don't like the fact that they cast Laena with much older actors when they are done with that initial point.
Nova is 14 now, and Savannah is 28. Nanna is 37.
They were 10/11, 25/26, and 34/35, respectively, while filming.
Respectfully that's insane.
They are playing 12, 16, and 26.
It's a clear oversight and is weird because yet again, they didn't consider the implication of a 16 year old black girl going after a 30+ year old prince. Or the idea of going from casting Laena with an actress younger than her age to two actresses a decade apart from her canon age.
Anyways: Casting 101
When 2 actors represent the spectrum of ages, your character is at (10 to 26), maybe cast between them for a teen version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't like the inconsistent casting. I genuinely think the only reason I don't hate it more is because of the fact that the inconsistent costumes piss me off more.
No hate to the actresses again. This is about character continuity and not at all a reflection of their performances. They are our Laena's and the reasons we wish we got more of the character.

The Social Model of Intersex
I recently wrote up an explanation of the social model of intersex and here I'm gonna take what I wrote the other day and expand on it.
Exposition: Some Disability 101
The social model of intersex is based on the social model of disability so first we need to know that terminology:
The medical model of disability views disability as something inherently disordered, requiring treatment/cure.
In contrast, the social model of disability sees that what is disabling about a disability is how society treats disabled people. There aren’t ramps and elevators for wheelchair users. There aren’t enough people who know signed languages or Braille. Videos don't come with quality captions and audio description. Etc.
Tumblr media
(image from here)
The Medical and Social Models of Intersex
The medical model of intersex is analogous to the medical model of disability. Being intersex is seen as disorder that needs to be cured. The terms disorder and difference of sexual development (DSD) are sometimes used by people who think of intersex this way. This is the dominant model that most people in Western society use to think about intersex, and similar to how the disability rights movement is resistant to the medical model, intersex people as a community want our medical model to lose its dominance.
The social model of intersex is similarly analogous to the social model of disability. It sees intersex variations as natural bodily variations. What sucks about being intersex is the intersexism - the stigma, discrimination, isolation, and shame that surrounds being intersex; the fetishization of intersex bodies (usually ambiguous genitals); the medical violence/trauma that comes from being coerced into gender-conforming treatments; and so on.
Authority and Gatekeeping
The two models have different epistemic implications, i.e, whose knowledge is important and valid. The medical model places (perisex) doctors and biologists as the authorities on intersex. Being intersex is a result of medical diagnosis, and doctors are the gatekeepers.
The social model places actually intersex people as authoritative, and what emerges from intersex communities is less emphasis on diagnosis and more emphasis on how your bodily variations have affected your life experiences.
And once you get people talking about life experiences and failing to meet a perinormative standard, it becomes apparent that common diagnoses like PCOS and gynecomastia are frequently associated with the same sorts of life experiences that people with diagnoses that everybody agrees are intersex.
For intersex people, having intersex be a big tent is an advantage. We suffer from isolation so terribly. Having more people in the community helps break that isolation. And having more community means more ability to mobilize against harmful practices like IGM.
Edit to add: the social/experiential aspect of being intersex is one of many reasons why intersex people react negatively to non-binary people saying they want to "transition to intersex".
The Futures We Want
For social model folks like me, the ideal future is that intersex people are accepted, respected, given considerate medical care that respects bodily autonomy, and given access to safe and inclusive community.
In contrast, medicalists think the ideal future is that there are no intersex people, because we have all been “cured”.
This is part of why so few intersex people find out their diagnosis is an intersex variation from their doctor (if they're even lucky enough to get and be told their diagnosis). This contributes to why so many intersex people don't figure out we're intersex until adulthood. Giving patients a label to help find social support and organize politically for better conditions just isn’t something in the mental toolkit of somebody who is stuck in the medical model.
Where The TERFs Come In
The medical model encourages the intersex community to stay fractured into different diagnoses, and to view us as rare anomalies.
This is why TERFS and other transphobes love the medical model of intersex. They cannot handle the idea of intersex being common. They need it to be rare so they peddle their narrative that biological sex is simple.
Even though the biology is clear that sex is really complicated and there is no clear line between male and female, and a whole bunch of middle ground, the anti-trans lobby isn't willing to listen.
To them, there is no middle ground. There is instead two separate categories - male and female - and with each categories you have a tiny subset of "disordered males" and "disordered females".
This is why we see anti-trans posters trying to sow doubt about POCS as intersex. PCOS is common. It affects primarily women. And recognizing hyperandrogenism PCOS as intersex is a direct threat to their messaging about sex and gender.
Summary
The medical model contributes to so much of the intersexism that intersex people face, notably from the anti-trans lobby and from doctors. We suffer from seen as being broken/disordered, from coercive medical interventions, and from the isolation that comes from being told you're uniquely broken. The social model allows actually intersex people to be seen as the authorities on intersex; and for us to find community, healing, and political power.

If you're still accepting '101 ways to Say I Love You with Actions' prompts then 36. "Letting them lay across your lap to read." with anyone who takes your fancy would be wonderful!
36. "Letting them lay across your lap to read."
--
Lucretia has accepted a lot of things by now. She's accepted the fact that they don't (yet) know how to defeat the Hunger. She's accepted that she will probably never have a normal young adulthood. She's accepted that she's stuck rooming with Merle for now, who snores like an entire ogre in his sleep. She's accepted that she's probably gonna fuck up her wrists real bad with all this writing.
And she's accepted the fact that Magnus has decided that her legs specifically are the best place to read.
She's not complaining! Well, not out loud. Lucretia loves Magnus like a brother, but sometimes she does get the Cain Instinct. Magnus is big- much bigger than her, both vertically and horizontally. And he likes to read out loud. Never super loud, but if Lucretia was trying to read herself, Magnus's attempts at whispering under his breath were incredibly distracting. Lucretia was the type of person who could work in pretty much any environment if she gave it her all. That didn't mean she wanted to be in said environment, though.
It's never really been a problem before now. That being said, they had never been in a world with the largest library Lucretia has ever seen before now. This plane was completely devoted to learning and documenting new discoveries. In return for letting them study the Light alongside the crew, they had been granted full access to the library's services, including the books regular citizens were not allowed to borrow. Lucretia was consuming them at a lightning pace.
For the past few weeks, she'd come into the library first thing in the morning and start right where she left off. Often, another crew member would come with her. Barry and Lup, usually, if they had time between their work with the Light. Davenport preferred to check out books to read on the ship, and Merle had a temporary ban for tracking mud inside on three separate occasions (when it hadn't even been raining. Lucretia would have asked questions but by now she knew how Merle was.). Taako made a huge show of telling her that "reading was for nerds" and "I have better things to do", so Lucretia was content not bringing it up every time they came across each other on the shelves.
Magnus was kind of touch and go. Getting him to focus on something like this had always been a challenge, but with a world focused mainly on studies and books, he didn't really have anywhere else to turn. He had taken to setting up shop near Lucretia, and then next to her, and then quite literally on her. She had to move over to one of the couches because sitting at the table was not going to support both of them.
"Luce," Magnus said, poking the back of her hand. Lucretia blinked, looking away from her book.
"Huh?"
"I asked if you think they've invented fun on this plane," Magnus said.
"You're awful," Lucretia said, bringing her attention back to her book. Magnus squirmed.
"This is awful," Magnus said. "Do they even have sports? Is sport a thing? Is there a book about, I don't know, some physical activities or like, punching someone, or?"
"I'm sure there is somewhere," Lucretia said. Magnus groaned.
"I don't wanna read about it," he said. Lucretia was beginning to think she wasn't going to be allowed to read anymore. "I wanna do it."
"Who's stopping you?" she asked.
Magnus paused. He had his Considering face on, which was never a good thing. Lucretia might have just caused a terrible thing to go into motion. But after a long, tense second, Magnus rolled his eyes and said,
"I don't wanna right now."
"Fantastic," Lucretia said. "Great reason. Keep reading."
"I don't get why people enjoy it, is all!" Magnus said. "Like, the letters keep jumping around and it hurts my brain. And all of these are non-, uhm. Fiction? Non-fiction? Or is it-"
"Non-fiction is right," Lucretia said. "Also, is it like a dyslexia jumping around thing or like a, you can't focus jumping around thing?"
"I don't know what dyslexia is," Magnus said. "The letters are just wrong."
Okay. No. Lucretia wasn't going to be reading anymore. She put her (new, very fancy) bookmark on the page she was reading and shut the book, setting it aside. Magnus had already closed his book. He looked up at her expectantly.
"Okay," Lucretia said. "Tell me about the letters."

Stiles is home from Berkeley for the summer, but only because he promised the pack. He'd rather not see Derek, because whatever the thing was that they were doing, they're not doing it anymore, and it sucks.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have a choice. The betas tried a magical remedy for Derek's melancholy, and now Stiles has a three-year-old who looks like Derek. Stiles doesn't know how to deal with that, and he definitely doesn't know how to tell the betas he and Derek were secret fuck buddies for a year and a half.

#50 Don’t Break the Chain
Tumblr media
The best way to get better at something is to practice that thing as often as possible. Unfortunately, finding the motivation to do something daily can be... difficult. One way to beat procrastination is to use a productivity strategy called “don’t break the chain.” Supposedly (but not really) invented by the comedian Jerry Seinfeld, the strategy expounds that every time you accomplish a daily goal (for example, work out or read), you should mark that day with an “x” on your calendar. After a few days, you’ll see a chain of x’s forming. As the chain grows longer, your satisfaction will increase, and you’ll be less likely to break your habit, whatever it may be.

🥑🌻🪐🥐☁️🎨 🧩 for Writers Truth & Dare Ask Game
1. 🥑 ⇢ you accidentally killed somebody, which mutual(s) do you text for help?
Probably the members of my Broblematic server (@outofstrings (bird and fae collectively, u may know of the Post-Cal ask blog), @future-geometries (Jess u are the first person I thought of) and definitely @alexharrier , who I think would probably hide me from the law even if I didn't explain the crime. I am not including beloved @chaton-katreal because I think she is too gentle, i would not want to muck up her life with murder!)
Or you know, my actual partner @notanotherdoodleblog probably LOL
All fantastic people, worth of hiding crimes.
2. 🌻 ⇢ tag someone you appreciate but don't talk to on a regular basis
Honestly most of my friends are pretty busy adulting 8( so we don't get to talk as much as I'd like to. @eggwyrt because our timezones are almost earth opposites. I love u!!!! I miss you!!
3. 🪐 ⇢ name three good things going on in your life right now
- I've got two real life best friends that I get together with and have coffee every weekend together, and sometimes do other things, and this is significant to me because adulthood makes it hard to keep friends, let alone see them.
- I got into the marine ecology lab at my school that I have been pushing for entrance into, despite missing a pre-req. I get to be on a boat for eight hours next quarter! Woohoo!
- I got fanart for a fic I am very proud of but very rarely interact with anybody about, which has boosted my confidence and made me feel really good, and each comment I've gotten since they posted the art has made my heart sing extra loud!
4. 🥐 ⇢ name one internet reference that will always make you laugh
Tbh I can't think of anything off the top of my head. My partner and I met through RVB, however, so we reference old seasons to each other fairly regularly, and I like to think we have a pretty good time c:
5. ☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username?
Tumblr media
(i do not even like Simmons that much but it's a solid username and now is part of my brand. also I am classically a blue team girly lol)
6. 🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
This is an impossible task. Insurmountable, even. There are several!! Many!!! How can I pick one?? So I will list a few:
A. Everything anyone has ever drawn for my fanfics at all ever.
B. SPECIFICALLY everything @alexharrier has drawn for me, ever. Especially specially specially these two gifs which actually make me fucking insane every time I see them.
Honestly, this had me making sounds so incoherent only dogs could hear them, years ago when I did not consider my fic would be special to anyone. I really really really treasure them.
Also both my birthday gifts, Bro at Disneyland, and Bro at Home Depot 💕
C. This artwork for RNG chapter 66, from @101-sve . It is also special to me, and it's been my wallpaper on my phone ever since c: the atmosphere, the warmth, the halo of their hair i just... Yeah!!!!
D. Recent, probably familiar still, this Holy Fucking Shit Beautiful Atmospheric work of art for metempsychosis!!!! by @askinsufferableprickmod . I really actually cannot stop looking at it. It's so gorgeous, and honestly even if it had nothing to do with me I would still be in love with it. The concept of the kids are Gods, as beings outside the mortal world they made for themselves, all that is visible here, and I really really love it!
* I know all of these are things people have drawn for me, for my content, but honestly that is why they are my favorites! It is touching to see someone put heart into something that is related to something you, yourself, also put heart into!!! I love it!!!! I love these talented artists!!!!!
ALSO: we all know Theater of Coolty, but it is so beloved to me, I can recite it in my sleep lol.
7. 🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately
On top of the other reasons I said I don't like things, you do actually have to convince me 6 times outta 10 if you want me to read a Homestuck fic in the third person. There is just something to the flavor of 2nd person that hits different. There is a reason different perspectives exist, and I think they can all be utilized well, but something about that classic, well-patterned "you, and then you" just gets me, you know?

im a system, but im bodily very young. like, teenager. i dont like to bring it up around my friends and we try to keep our switches subtle. we're traumagenic with a few endo headmates and i dont know what to do, ive lived with my headmates for so long that theyre part of my life now (ive been able to hear them for like 5 years) but what if im subconsciously faking because im
so young? help???
Hello. I hope we can provide you with a bit of reassurance here.
We genuinely do believe that the vast majority of systems form or develop in childhood. Our own system formed as a toddler, and there are many other systems who found themselves in a similar situation. Forming a system as a child is relatively normal for plurals.
Further, while sometimes individuals may not have their “syscovery” or fully realize/understand that they are plural until adulthood, that does not mean that those who discover their plurality as children are faking or misunderstanding their experiences. Children are smart. They are capable of learning about themselves and coming to their own conclusions about their identities. If a child can understand that they are transgender at a young age (which they can, and often do) then a child could certainly understand they are plural or a system as well.
If a child, after some time of identifying as a system, comes to realize that they were mistaken or aren’t plural after all, that’s quite alright. No harm done. There is nothing wrong with questioning, trying out labels, or being wrong about your experience. That is just a part of learning, growing, and existing.
Finally, on faking:
Faking something as all-encompassing as plurality would require much planning and effort, and those who do fake being a system are likely consciously aware that they are faking. Even if someone is pretending to be a system while simultaneously being a singlet, if that experience works for them and is beneficial, we don’t see a problem with this. However, we truly believe that this sort of phenomenon is incredibly rare. If you’re worried about faking (a very common concern among systems), chances are, you’re not. And again, even if you were, that is just fine and we will still welcome you in our spaces as one of us.
We will link a post we’ve written in the past on dealing with denial as a system. I do hope that it will be able to help put your mind at ease a little bit.
I hope this post proves useful or beneficial for you. Regardless of your age, or how your system presents, or your origins, or any other factor, if you believe you are plural then you are plural. And that’s all there is to it, as far as we are concerned.
We are wishing you hope, comfort, and understanding as you continue to discover and learn more about yourself/ves. Rest assured, there is no lower age limit to plurality, and you are welcome in the plural community as long as you wish to be here.

so, ratels don't reach sexual maturity until 2 or 3 years old, and they don't really detach from their parents entirely until age 2 -- i have no doubt that legend is a huge baby who still sticks by her family but let's charitably assume that she went to college when she was 2 years old. she'd be 5 by her third year in college. she is clearly starting to brush against thesis ideas, so let's assume that in her fourth year, she's expected to develop a metanoetic thesis.
tangentially, aura is supposed to be around age 13 in fisher time... she says she's ALMOST an adult, so let's assume that she's referring to sexual maturity. fishers begin to breed at 1 year of age, but their reproductive cycles take the entire year to complete. she would have had to complete her college career in less than a year and developed a thesis by then for that to work out, so let's assume that she instead considers one full reproductive cycle adulthood. she could have perhaps 1 and a half years of schooling where she has developed a thesis. fishers live for about 10 years -- half as long as a ratel. rodents live for about 4 years if bred responsibly and raised on captivity if we go off of rats, and we know that 1 year of schooling is considered the full package, possibly even more than necessary, so they're expected to spend like 25% of their lifespan on schooling. if we double this, then only 1/8th of their lifespan. if we went off of that, aura would be about 2 and a half years old, doubling the average fisher lifespan for Society Lifespans. seems kind of accurate?
back to legend-- to be charitable, because her species with lifespan doubled can live to like 50 years old, let's assume that her lifespan is "24 years old" for this. 1/8th of her lifespan would be 3 years. of course, we know that most of her schooling was for markscraftmanship, which she then withdrew from for combat-oriented schooling. she is in a 101 class right now, but she has more knowledge than a first-season student. the 101 class is definitely supposed to be more of a "specialty" class, which might be taken later in a student's career. i had considered making it a 201 class. anyway, 4 years seems not unreasonable to start expecting a thesis from an animal of her species. if we REALLY want to pad it out, we can say that she was 7 years old by the time that she had to withdraw at school for observation and treatment at HIOT. because the decline of her condition takes a little while, and the idea of an HIOT treatment isn't immediate like one might immediately consider a therapist, i like to think that she spent about 2 years at HIOT. we know that smoothie's time with fig was a year -- he started seeing her in spring and fucked her in winter. we can assume that after that, legend has spent another 2-4 seasons refining her thesis's concept.
that is all to say that legend must be around 8-10 years old, which also makes pegging 3-4x older than her. moreover, that also means that by the time legend abducts pegging, machinations may or may not have died from old age. it's 3-4 years after legend was tutored by her, and she was not exactly a fresh out of college teacher.
the lifespan shit in this comic is fucking absurd, it makes my brain go brrrrr

Dæmonism 101 - Differences from HDM
Though daemonism is inspired by Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, things don’t quite work the same in our world. Here are some key differences between daemons in daemonism and daemons in His Dark Materials.
Our daemons aren’t physical. Daemons in daemonism are constructs of the mind and heart, so they can't interact with the world directly. Daemians can see their daemon in their mind’s eye, like imagining the form of their daemon nearby or on a table, and hear their daemon in the same way we hear our internal thoughts. But we can't see or hear another person’s daemon. We can imagine what their feathers or fur or heat might feel like, but can’t physically hold them. On the plus side, that does mean daemons can roll their eyes or make jokes without getting us in trouble.
Our daemons don’t magically settle at adulthood. Many daemians use a form finding system created by the daemian community in order to choose their daemon’s settled form. In our world no magic happens to cause a daemon to settle as the perfect form to match their human, which is why form finding systems were created to fill the gap. Settling and form finding aren’t a requirement either. Some daemians find a settled form, but their daemon doesn't take that form all the time, or at all. Some daemians don’t look for a fitting form because they're not interested in that. Others pick a settled form according to personal preference. Someone might find a settled form and realize later on that another form fits them best, or that they have changed and the previous form no longer fits. All of these are valid in daemonism.
Daemians can have more than one daemon. Though most daemians only have the one, there is no obligation to have one demon like in the books. Some daemians might feel like there is still a side of them that doesn’t get expressed by their current daemon, and want another daemon to connect with this side of them, for example. Other daemians have a second daemon appear of its own will, without really trying. There is no limit to the number of daemons one can have.
Our daemons don’t need to be the opposite gender of their humans. Though it’s the norm in the books, this strict binary model doesn’t work for everyone. Daemons can be of any gender, just like humans. There is no requirement for a woman to have a male daemon, or for a masculine person to have a feminine daemon, or for a non-binary person to have a non-binary daemon, etc. Whatever gender and pronouns work for you and your daemon is what matters. Some daemons even use daemon specific neopronouns like dae/daem.
Our daemons don’t have to take real life animal forms. The only limit is your imagination! Daemons can take the form of fantasy creatures like a Pokémon or griffon or dragon. They can be a dog-sized bear, a fish that flies in the air or a green winged rat. They can even take the form of a human. Exploring different forms outside of the ones your daemon usually takes can be a fun activity or challenge for the both of you.
Daemonism is such a personal experience. Daemons are as unique as humans are. Don’t let the book limit you or your daemon!

Major HOTD Spoilers
Tumblr media
Going into House of the Dragon I expected to cry when Aemma died in childbirth.  I heard the little amount of screentime she had in the pilot really set her up to be an instant sympathetic, if not loveable character.  I also knew that the writer’s were taking the dangers of childbirth in a pseudo-medieval world seriously and realistically for the supposed time period, which really excited me because you hardly ever see this explored in fantasy or even in historical dramas, beyond “oh this woman died on the birthing bed, oh well”.  However, I did not expect how they actually did this in the show.  On one hand it was horrifying and brutal and just thinking of it makes me tear up and start crying again.  I was sobbing watching the scene of Aemma in childbirth, so much so that I completely missed Daemon and Christon Cole’s fight.  One would think that this reaction I had was a very negative reaction and that I hated it, but surprisingly I didn’t.  It wasn’t gratuitous to me like Sansa’s r*pe was in GOT S5, and I don’t feel like it was a cheap way to shock the audience or add just another act of violence against women in medieval-esque settings.  No, I thought it brought to light the realities of what women had to go through in that type of society and how they were ruled by their husband, or other men, to make decisions for them, even life and death decisions.
In the pilot they clearly depict that Aemma was subjected to the normalized abuse of constantly being subjected to pregnancy and childbirth just so a male heir could be birthed.  We see Aemma pregnant at the Great Council of 101 AC, and then we see Aemma heavily pregnant again 9 years later.  She pleads with Viserys about how she wants this pregnancy to be her last.  She has already had five pregnancies in twice as many years, none of them viable as she went through several miscarriages and stillbirths.  This is a realistic depiction of what it meant to be a married woman (especially a noble woman) in that type of society, with the expectations of producing heirs.  Aemma shows that she has accepted her duty/was socialized by the patriarchal society around her to accept it, but it’s obvious it’s been hard on her, and this isn’t even a show only thing.  In the books Viserys is desperate for a male heir and is constantly impregnating Aemma until her death.  And if the ASOIAF world is anything like the real medieval world, then 1 in every 20 women would die in childbirth.  I guess that doesn’t seem like a lot, but consider how these odds aren’t just there permanently, as in if you survived one childbirth you’ll survive them all, no, these odds were there every single time.  So when you factor in how many children women were having in those days, those rates get even higher and higher for a singular woman.  And let’s not forget the mortality rates of children in those days as well.  A quarter of babes did not reach childhood/past their toddler days, and only about half of the children born made it to adulthood, as in 16 years old or so.
Childbirth, indeed, is a battlefield, as Aemma Arryn said, which leads me into another aspect I really loved about the pilot, how Aemma’s labor and death was juxtaposed with the tourney.  While the tourney wasn’t a real battle, the participants were playing at battle, while Aemma also fought in childbirth.  I thought it was just a really great bit of writing that was never really seen in GOT from my recollections.
So like I said, this scene of Aemma trying to give birth to her son was just absolutely heartwrenching.  And surprisingly, seeing Aemma’s choice being taken away was almost prophetic to our own current political climate in America, which I think just made the experience of watching it even more horrifying.  Giving Viserys the choice to let both Aemma and his heir die, or try to save the heir (because Aemma was going to die regardless) is something that really captures the core of GRRM’s world.  GRRM calls it “the heart in conflict”, but he also loves posing the question of “what would you do in this or that situation?” and he loves morally gray, complex characters who are both capable of good and bad.
As we saw, Viserys tries to save his son and heir, without so much as a discussion with Aemma.  Viserys doesn’t tell her the medical prognosis, nor the statistics.  He doesn’t give her the choice.  She doesn’t know what’s happening and she’s pleading and crying as they cut into her and it’s so fucking horrific, but it’s so horrific because of how real it is.  Viserys supposedly loved Aemma but he took her choice away and didn’t respect her enough to let her decide for herself or for them to decide together.  It’s despicable, but it’s quintessential GRRM/ASOIAF with its moral grayness and quandaries.  Think Jaime Lannister being capable of throwing a 7 year old boy out a tower window, yet two books later he goes back and saves Brienne of Tarth from being mauled by a bear.  Viserys, in the show, is a very complex character so far.  He’s weak, but he can make some of his own decisions, he trusts the wrong people, he loves his brother but is suspicious of him, he loves his daughter but didn’t think she was capable of being heir until he lost everything else and now he feels guilt over it.  He wants to keep the peace because of the heavy burden he bears, yet the Iron Throne keeps cutting him and infecting him, and instead of listening to his family and trying to join their strength together, he listens to conniving lickspittles.  He loved his wife, Aemma, but he still impregnated her back to back to back, and instead of informing Aemma about any of what was happening, he let people push her down into a mattress and cut her stomach open for her to bleed out in agony, not knowing why.  It’s despicable, it’s morally gray, almost black, and I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around his character thinking this is okay.  However, I like this moral complexity, I enjoy it, and it was something that was lost in the original GOT series where almost everyone lost their complexity.
But in the end, I mourn for Aemma Arryn. She was only in a few scenes but she held a huge presence, and I feel her death and the circumstances behind it will haunt Rhaenyra during S1, especially when she is forced by Viserys to marry and produce heirs.  I don’t know if I’m in the minority or not, but I thought the way they explored the dangers of childbirth and the complete insidiousness of how it could be was really well done.  It was horrifying and macabre, but narratively it was just a 10/10 episode for me, despite how heartwrenching it was.
(I hope I made it clear that I didn’t get any joy out of this death.  I thought it was just really well done, and I applaud them for writing something that wasn’t just obviously put in for shock value with nothing deeper going on.  I do not like it when shows become gratuitous, but I do not like when shows also shy away from hard topics or adult content that they could narratively address on a deeper level once put into the text.  And I thought the show did great with this so far in the pilot.)

I had a bunch of idea for new posts and I’m curious on what you all would be interested in.
Character on Trial: Is when I take a divisive character and make a ruling on whether they are Good or bad, and if it’s their fault or bad writing
Powers Explained: I take a power or ability in fiction and explain what the powers constitute, it’s potential, limits, and give a rating on how good the power is.
Digging into Plotholes: I dig into shows or movies that have a plothole/s and go into the following: How noticeable it is, How impactful on the plot it is? How it could be fixed, and a rating of how it personally impacted me
Counterpoint: I take a popular take about show, manga, comic, character, etc. and turn it on its head. Using sources to try and disprove popular fanon.
Adulting 101: I step out of the fictional world and explain some IRL things that should have been taught to you all before going into the realm of adulthood.
