Random Headcanons

This time about Ace and his narcolepsy.

I’m no expert and while there’s probably a proper name for his sleep attacks , I’ve always called them drops in my head .

I’ve noticed that his narcolepsy never acts up during fights or dangerous/ serious situations.

In albasta he drops before smoker shows up. As for buggy … well comparative wise buggy isn’t much of threat to ace power wise.

So My headcanon is that Ace’s narcolepsy only acts up when he’s safe and is a very accurate indicator for when things are safe.

Why? Ace grew up exploring what’s probably one the most dangerous Forrest’s in the east blue( like the gaint animals are what you normally see in the grandline) and fighting adults in place like grey terminal. So maybe his bodies survival instincts developed as an unconscious self-defense mechanism that wards off his narcolepsy until it’s deemed safe. Even when he’s eating he stays awake and alert.—- because eating can induces a narcoleptic attack/ drop ,( yes I did do some research and it’s when he’s eating that we see Ace actually drops in the anime)

As to How the body knows when it’s safe or not , probably an unconscious use of observation haki. Again ace is basically a feral jungle child I wouldn’t be surprised if he unlocked a little bit of haki while in survival mode. If unlocked conquers haki at ten it might not be far of stretch he unconsciously unlocked and used observation haki.

It doesn’t take long for he’s brothers , specifically Sabo, to notice. He starts using it to gauge situations or whether they’re in the clear or not. Like after hunting a tiger or stealing from a bunch of thugs.

Sabo calls it the drop gauge.

The drop gauge is effective enough that his brothers (and later his crew) trust it implicitly.

Seriously they could be captured or and held at gun point by someone like a yanko ,warlord, or admiral but if Ace drops they instantly relax.

because if it’s safe enough that Ace dropped it probably means that whatever the situation is isn’t dangerous so there’s not a lot a lot to worry about.(and usually means that they can get out of the situation easily).

( whether or not ace aware that he’s used as a gauge is up to interpretation)

Bonus Scene: The spades also use the drop gauge especially for after a big fight or a rough storm, everyone keeps their guard up until Ace drops , meaning they’re in the clear , then they can relax.

Spade pirates just finished raiding a marine base or rival pirate crew.

Despite being over an hour since they’ve seen any enemies and probably a safe distance away The whole crew are on alert. Weapons ready and everyone is in position to defend or to get the ship ready to make a quick getaway.

Deuce who’s going over a map with A newer member of the crew.

Deuce: We can head towards this island here if they catch up us.

New crew members: um deuce do we really need to make another escape route? think we can relax now.

Deuce glancing at their captain ,who was talking with skull: no not yet.

Newer crew member: But it’s been an hour already and we haven’t seen anything. I think we’re pretty safe now.

Deuce, knowing that the other more senior members were keeping subtle eye on their captain turns back to the map in his hands:Not until the captain shows us it’s safe. Until then stay vigilant and be ready for anything.

And few minutes later is when the captain ‘shows’ it’s safe.

Ace drops mid conversation, skull catching him before he face plants on the deck.

None of the crew panic when their captain suddenly slumps over ,They’re all to used to the logia suddenly dropping out of nowhere, that they’d normally continue with what they were doing like nothing happened. Unless it it was after a battle.

Anytime Ace drops after a fight he’s always properly checked over.(there have been false drops before like when ace lost to much blood or that one time he got poisoned).

Deuce a little concerned ( because his captains an idiot who doesn’t tell him when he’s injured until he passes out from his wounds) :Well?

Skull looks up after evaluating the logia , who’s already starting to snore, giving the first mate a thumps up.

Deuce smiles and turns back to the rest of the crew. They were all waiting, had been the moment bone and ace stopped talking. they all look in direction waiting for the verdict.

Deuce:Alright captain dropped we’re all clear!

There’s a cheer as the crew finally relaxes.some even start making they’re way to retrieve the booze they managed to steal along with lots treasure.

Okay so I was listening to Placebo's album Black Market Music today while driving, and...this whole fucking album is like Vegaspete the Album.

I mean there's already so much Placebo on my Vegaspete playlist, but now I need to rethink my choices.

And because I feel like it, a self-ingulgent exercise.

Track 1 - Taste in Men - Already on my VP playlist, very Kinnporsche feeling in general. "Come back to me a while; Change your taste in men"

Track 2 - Days Before You Came

"Days before you came It always seemed enticing To be naked and profane There is no denying Days before you came Thunderbolts and lightning Each day a brand new vein Each tourniquet colliding"

'nuf said.

Track 3 - Special K - already on my VP playlist

Track 4 - Spite & Malice

(Honestly one of the lesser VP songs on the album to me but, see lyrics. Still pretty much The Mood.)

Eh not that specific but still a harmonious vibe.

Track 6 - Black Eyed (This is where I started being like oh, this is a Vegas song and then the rest of the album was like oh yeah no the whole thing.)

Track 7 - Blue American - let's ignore this song I hate it. it's the song that keeps this album from being 100% perfect to me

Eh again, not super relevant. But not NOT appropriate.

Track 9 - Commercial for Levi

"You're the one who's always choking Trojan You're the one who's always bruised and broken Drunk on immorality Valium and cherry wine Coke and ecstasy You're gonna blow your mind"

Vaguely a Vegas song, though his self-destruction isn't exactly drugs. But I have a lot of personal feelings tied into this song, so it's difficult to associate it with characters.

Track 10 - Haemoglobin - Okay ignoring the actual context of the song, which is racist lynchings, I, uh, get Pete vibes from it.

Track 11 - Narcoleptic - Pete to Vegas, especially when he's in the hospital.

Track 12 - Peeping Tom -Mostly Pete POV but general VP also

Track 13 - Black Market Blood - This one is hard to relate because of all the she/her pronouns. But about impending doom and destruction.

And I HONESTLY don't know what to do about my VP playlist. Definitely adding at LEAST Black-eyed. Might remove one or two other placebo songs in favor of Days Before You Came and Narcoleptic or Peeping Tom? IDK Or just add them all and be damned? It's already SO placebo heavy. Look placebo was the reason I decided I needed to make a VP playlist tho.

Actor AU

Aka what if One Piece was a TV show and the characters were actors on it

Important note:

These headcanons are only regarding the "actors" not the characters they "play" as. It's all about fun and games and other people are more than welcome to make their own headcanons regarding an AU like this.

Ace

His character originally didn't have a narcolepsy, but due to the fact that the actor himself, who also happens to be called Ace, has it, it was written into the script.

Like Sean Bean, Ace is often starring in roles where he dies because he "does it so well".

In his first acting gig he actually was having a narcoleptic moment due to him forgetting to take his medication, which resulted in his most memorable moments within his acting career; the rest of the crew believed that he was super into his role as a dying man when in reality he was just fighting to stay awake and eventually failed.

During the filming of One Piece, he's also starring in a gay movie that is basically retelling of the Sleeping Beauty as him being the Prince who's asleep while Sabo happens to act the role of the love interest.

He and Sabo are often hired into the same movie due to their chemistry working together so well.

Sabo

The burn mark on his face is real and it was a result of an accident on set of one of his previous acting gigs. Ace feels responsible for it, but Sabo keeps telling him that it's okay and he'd risk his life again for the raven.

Sometimes he and Ace both forget their lines which often results in funny gags.

Sabo once appeared on set with a birthday hat and a kazoo because of one of the scenes being so ridiculous already that he was sure that nobody would spot him on the background.

He's actually the older brother of the child actor who plays his younger self.

Luffy

He's basically Tom Holland, people have made it into a game to silence him during interviews before he'd accidentally end up giving out spoilers.

He claims that him spoiling entire franchise with a single Instagram post would be possible and thus he doesn't make his own posts.

He looks up to Law as his mentor as an actor.

Sanji

He's actually gay and finds his hetero acting to be cringey.

He originally tried to land a role as Zoro but his childhood friend turned out to be better fit to it while he became Sanji as it turned out that he filled all the qualifications and actually knew how to cook.

He ends up falling for Zoro and the two joke about it a lot.

Some parts of the duos iconic bickering is actually them improvising, their chemistry due to being childhood friends making it all the more believable.

Zoro

Wanted to play the role of Sanji, but he literally managed to set a glass of water on fire.

The green hair is natural.

He's a bisexual and has to often remind people about it as they tend to just lump him into being either gay or heterosexual and it annoys him to no end.

He actually spent two months learning how to swordfight for the show.

Tends to add more gay undertones on scenes with Sanji as a joke, so far the producers haven't caught on them.

Usopp

Luffy's childhood friend who got dragged into the production originally as one of the extras.

When the original actor of Usopp fell ill, he filled in and it turned out that his way of acting fit the character a lot more and felt more genuine.

He's dating Vivi, who was going to move to another country after Alabasta Arc was recorded, so the reactions on the final episode of the arc were genuine.

Usopp also acts a lot like Mark Ruffalo as in he's super happy to meet new people and asks about the other actors. On the red carpet he's often seen asking questions like "Was that Rebekka?".

Nami

She's Shanks' younger sister by few years, and her hair is naturally ginger though she'd like to have a bright red hair as her brother.

She grew up going from set to set thanks to their parents being actors too and so she already knows a great deal of the actors she's working with.

She has a crush on Robin.

Franky

He's not actually a cyborg (duh), it's a suit that he operates.

Nobody ever recognises him without the suit.

Robin

She's around the same age as Ace, Sabo and Shanks (early twenties).

She's known for her femme fatale roles and serious characters so to her getting to act Robin was a small breakthrough as it isn't entirely the same as her previous roles.

She spent several months studying about archaeology so she could be more convincing in her role.

Often reads books in the set during filming as she felt like making Robin into a bit of a book nerd would make her more relatable to the audience.

Reads stories to the kids to keep them calm and out of trouble.

Brook

He originally tried to get the role of Roger, but his voice fit way too well to Brook's.

He jumps around the scenes wearing a motion capture suit.

He actually laughs like that.

He has no idea how to play any instrument, but he's capable of faking it rather well.

Chopper

Is actually a robotic doll that's being operated by several people depending on the version.

The voice actor is 12 year old boy, who's good friends with the rest of the child actor crew.

Jinbe

In his first appearance he was wearing a latex based makeup, but it soon turned out that he was allergic to it.

The current version is being made with a motion capture suit and body doubles as its better for the actor.

Law

He's in his thirties already and is actually the father of the boy who acts his child self.

He's a single father who tries his best and thus child Law (whose stage name is Atlan) often travels with him.

He's also best friends with the man who acts as Corazon, who happens to be the godfather of Atlan.

Has massive bursts of adrenaline as a result of the child actors often doing dangerous stuff on the set and needing saving.

Smuggles food and vitamin packs onto the set.

Has a habit of hugging and kissing his fellow cast members on their cheeks, which they have come to love.

Basically he's the dad of the group.

Shanks

He's actually in his early twenties.

He spends hours in the makeup chair to get himself look older and his hair is naturally red.

He's an overprotective brother to Nami.

Buggy

His hair is naturally brown and the fact that he has to both dye his hair, shave his eyebrows and wear heavy hair extentions make him very grumpy.

He's been acting on same gigs as Shanks for a while, mostly as the villain or the sidekick.

When the meeting with Ace scene was being filmed, neither him nor the extras present had been told about Ace's narcolepsy resulting in a genuine reaction. Buggy hadn't even known that Ace would be in the scene.

Eustass

Is actually very good with kids to the level where they'll do anything he says. Except not cause trouble.

Had to improvise the whole scene where he made the alliance with the two other Supernovas.

Personality wise he's very chill and a total pacifist.

Bartolomeo

He's a well known actor who's been looking for a less of a serious role for a while now.

He's also a fully transitioned trans man, who has a tendency of forgetting to take his extra vitamins and sometimes even to put on the gel. He doesn't like to advertise about being trans and keeps it under the wraps.

When he found out that one of their crew members (more specifically his makeup artist) was treating another actor poorly, who also was trans, he told about to the others and refused to be in the same space as they were until they were replaced.

He often gives pointers to Ivan when it comes to their role as non-gender confirming person and Bonnie Clay.

Violet

A fully transitioned trans woman, who was sadly mistreated by a crew member.

She grew to be close with Bartolomeo and the two bonded over their experiences, the man even going as far as making her his honorary sister.

The rest of the cast treats her with respect and remind her to take proper care of herself, Law going as far as even looking into potential health related issues she might come across. The older actor always reminds her to take her additional vitamins and to eat healthily.

Rebekka

She's Coby's twin sister while the younger Coby's actor is their cousin.

She has a thing for Hancock, who happens to be ace.

The hair is natural.

Coby

Looks up to Shanks as a role model when it comes to acting.

Rebekka's younger twin.

His hair is naturally pink.

Corazon

Applied to play the part of Corazon to ensure that Atlan (Law's son and the one who acts as his character's younger self) wouldn't feel too overwhelmed with all of the new people.

Made sure that the boy wouldn't work too hard.

Is often seen chilling on the floor with Atlan and the other kids.

Yes, he is really that clumsy.

Boa Hancock

Asexual who's greatly amused by the over the top reactions of her character when it comes to Luffy.

Romantically interested in Rebekka, though isn't entirely sure of how to proceed with it.

Mihawk

A long time friend of both Shanks and Law, has shared the screen with both of them previously on multiple occasions.

Usually ends up playing mysterious swordsmen like Zorro.

Is part of the "cast dad" team with Law and Shanks despite of the fact that Law is the only one of them who even knows how to deal with kids.

Perona

Nami's goth friend

She originally auditioned for the role of Tashigi but she soon found herself to be cast as Perona, which she ended up liking more.

She has done few acting gigs before but mainly on stage.

She is sad and happy at the same time

Everyone thought they knew him, knew his skills and who he was, but there was a part of him that he had hid, even from his father figure/captain. Not that he was ashamed of this, no, but he didn’t know how to word what he could or convince others that he wasn’t joking. They couldn’t see what he could, so they wouldn’t understand. Some would try, though the main reason he didn’t tell, was that he feared they would just come to him for him to use his abilities. He didn’t want to be just that. Useful for his special abilities or be reduced to a person only good for that.

“What are you brooding over, Haruta?” Thatch leaned against the railing next to him. Blue hues gazed shortly at the brown-haired cook, before settling back onto the sea. For a few moments he didn’t speak, though he usual was one to have a quick response. He didn’t feel like it now and if Thatch had a problem with it, it was his problem.

“Not brooding, dork. Just enjoying the view and calmness. Never know when you pull a prank or we get attacked.” Haruta spoke after a few moments of silence. Thatch rolleed his eyes, knowing it was only half the truth. He knew that something was bothering Haruta, he could tell, but he also knew it was no point in trying to get him to talk, when he didn’t want to.

So Thatch opted for a snort. “Yeah as if I’m the only prankster here. Who says you’re not here, waiting for your latest victim to find out they’re a victim?” He teased Haruta, earning a snort in return.

“Unlike you, I do like peace now and then.” Haruta responded and that was the truth. Sure, he too was a prankster of heart, but he did like some peace now and then. Thatch was the social magnet, along with Ace and the cook could only enjoy solitude or quiet time, when coming up with new recipe, checking up on supplies and doing his paperwork.

A huff left Thatch’s lips, but before he could comment, one of the cooks came to tell him they needed him in the kitchen. Thatch excused himself, but did tell Haruta they weren’t finish with their talk. Haruta just waved him off, eyes never leaving the sea.

After some time, Ace joined him and in silence they stood there, watching the sea together. It was the younger male that broke the silence, but what he said took Haruta by surprise.

“You know, he’s right. Something is eating you up and people starts to notice. He’s just worried and wants to help. I do too.” Ace gave him his warmest and kindest smile. Haruta smild back, a soft and thankful smile.

“I know, but there’s no one that can help me. It’s just how it is and it’s perfectly fine to brood sometimes.” Haruta tried hard not to snap, he knew that they worried, but seriously, it was okay to have days where you felt less social and down. Haruta wasn’t that extroverted as others and he hadn’tbeen lying, when saying he liked some quiet time and peace now and then.

Ace sighed. “As long as it doesn’t eat you up. It can be rather destructive.” If anyone knew how destructive it could be to brood and let things eat you up, it was the young freckled male. That was his core or part of it. All his life he had been a ball of anger and been self destructive, but it had become less over the years. After all, he had a little brother to watch over, so he couldn’t be self destructive.

Haruta hummed, letting Ace knew he heard him. Still, he didn’t tell the freckled male what it was, but his eyes were suddenly drawn towards Ace or rather to the right of Ace. There she was. The woman who always lingered near Ace, looking both happy and sad at the same time. It was rather heartbreaking. Such beauty and yet so much much hurt. Haruta diverted his eyes back to the sea. He had a feeling who she was, though he never spoke to her. He never spoke to the dead, in fear of them demanding him to do something he didn’t want to do.

“Please don’t ever stop loving him or care for him. He needs it.”

Haruta almost jolted at the sudden soft voice and he looed back at the woman, who was know smiling to him. It was the first time in years that any dead person had spoken to him or even acknowledge that they knew he could see them. She gave him a wink, before looking back at Ace, her eyes now filled with tender love. Her lips touched his hair and then she was gone again.

“What are you looking at?” Ace had noticed Haruta staring at his right side and had turned to see himself, but of course he couldn’t see anything. Haruta shook his head and look back at the sea.

“Nothing. I was just lost in my thoughts.” He hated to lie, but he couldn’t tell the truth either. Especially not to Ace. Haruta couldn’t say how Ace would react or what he would do if he believed Haruta. Would Ace bombard him with questions and make him talk to the woman, who Haruta thought was Ace’s mother? Or would he scurry away, believing Haruta would speak Roger’s case? Haruta wouldn’t do that.

“Fair enough.” Ace shrugged and leaned against the railing. Haruta felt blessed and when Ace had a narcoleptic attack and slept, he found himself alone with the woman again. Haurta quickly looked around to see if anyone was nearby, but no one was.

“Don’t worry. I’ll never stop loving and caring for him. He’s my brother after all.” Haruta flashed her a warm and loving smile, before looking at the sleeping form. The woman moved to Haruta and gave his shoulder a squeeze.

“Thank you. And you should tell your father about your abilities. He will understand and guide you. You should know. He cares for you.” She smiled, kissed his cheek and disapeared again.

Haruta smiled and closed his eyes, as she kissed his cheek. She was right and maybe it was long overdue he told his father. After all, there was one person who had a message for him. He looked up the mast and gave said person a nod. Tonight he would tell his deepest secret and maybe he would feel less down about it.
