I've been reading @hollyand-writes's Pride & Prejudice AU called A Chance Engagement, and quite frankly it's one of the best fanfics I've ever read. It's so well thought out, flows beautifully, and is captivating and entertaining in a way I haven't felt in a very long time. Please give it a read sometime!

It was dark when Ice came home past midnight, and all the lights in the house were snuffed out—even the one above the sink that Maverick usually left on when he knew Ice’s flight was a red-eye. The only sound in the house came from Bucket and Taxy, who quietly greeted Ice in the kitchen, pressing wet noses into the palms of his hands. By the time Ice wheeled his luggage into the bedroom with a weary sigh, both dogs had already returned to bed, having decided they’d done their due diligence as watchdogs. Now there was only Ice, and a small, softly-snoring lump of warm flesh fully beneath the sheets: Maverick. Ice tiptoed closer, and the scent of bourbon tickled his nose. Ah: a drunk Maverick—that explained the snores.

Ice sat down on the edge of the bed and rested a hand lightly where he assumed Maverick’s head was. He hit paydirt: the snoring ceased, and Maverick emerged from the sheets like a butterfly struggling to escape its chrysalis. Using his right elbow for leverage, he heaved back and forth, trying to prop himself up to look Ice in the face. The bourbon smell intensified the more he moved. To provide additional support, Ice slid his hand down to Maverick’s shoulder and tightened his grip.

“Hello,” Ice said with a grin. “I’m home.”

“Oh, hel-lo, handsome,” Maverick drawled. “Handsomest. Ooh, let me under that shirt.” One very cold, very shaky hand tugged at Ice’s dress shirt and undershirt until they both came loose from his pants. Slim fingers slipped beneath the fabric and traveled slowly, steadily north. “Those,” Maverick declared. “Are my favorite nipples on earth.”

BUT IM JUST THINKING ABOUT IN THE MOMENT OF IT ALL bc in the same chapter #ww asks for a chance for tomorrow and then gets news of earth ships coming. in this same arc vash is thinking of all the things he needs to #resolve so his home doesn't get attacked so the people he love doesn't have to die and the humans he wants to protect gets to live.#i feel like deep down they both semi-recognize that it can't be this easy and regardless of earth ships coming- there's still a wait for #them to arrive and they have to hold out. and regardless ww still has a mission to follow through and vash knows knives would find out #but in that mood of celebration the entire ship brought in - they can at least let themselves relax for a moment and indulge #how they basically engaged with no violence for the few days they were on that ship coaxing them into domesticity... i feel like their #thoughts would wander to somewhere soft and all #allowing them to push aside the tiptoeing and tenseness and be sweet for a night #ruporas art

Something I wonder about Simon and Betty's relationship is how long they were together before the whole crown ordeal. But they were engaged, you say. My aunt (in)famously met my uncle and had a ring on her finger in 8 weeks. We've seen that both Betty and Simon were both weird outcasts, crazy determined and a pinch insane. I would not be surprised if they decided they'd met their one true love and got engaged super quick.

My point being, Betty's shifting to revolve around Simon and Simon's rose colored glasses of their relationship feels very much like New Love. They're people who love each other and love being a couple but still haven't quite figured out how to coexist together, as two people in a partnership. I feel like if they'd known each other longer, lived together longer, some of the issues we're seeing would have probably self resolved.

I don't think their relationship is toxic nor is it totally perfect. It's two lonely, most likely neurodivergent people in a relatively early relationship still figuring out how it works. Everything that happened afterwards: the crown, the seperation, the time travel, the magic/madness/sadness just exemplified issues they had both as individuals and as a couple.

Your artworks have a softness to them, the most intimate moment are quiet and filled with warmth. You have a way of conveying emotions through body language, down to the smallest of fingers. I'm really not a villain enjoyer. I love anti-heroes and anti-villains. But I can't see fictional evil separate from real evil. As in not that enjoying dark fiction means you condone it, but that all fiction holds up some kind of mirror to the world as it is. Killing innocent people doesn't make you an iconic lesbian girlboss it just makes you part of the mundane and stultifying black rot of the universe.

"But characters struggling with honour and goodness and the egoism of being good are so boring." Cool well some of us actually struggle with that stuff on the daily because being a good person is complicated and harder than being an edgelord.

Sure you can use fiction to explore the darkness of human nature and learn empathy, but the world doesn't actually suffer from a deficit of empathy for powerful and privileged people who do heinous stuff. You could literally kill a thousand babies in broad daylight and they'll find a way to blame your childhood trauma for it as long as you're white, cisgender, abled and attractive, and you'll be their poor little meow meow by the end of the week. Don't act like you're advocating for Quasimodo when you're just making Elon Musk hot, smart and gay.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but why do so many people think that criticizing the Jedi is bad? The Jedi are and were never perfect. They can never be a perfect order who does everything right and never makes mistakes. Frankly, I can write an entire essay on their flaws.

It is okay that they were flawed. That doesn’t mean you can’t root for them. I root for them. I deeply love them and their lore. The Great Jedi Purge was a tragedy that they didn’t deserve. But acting like they’re an untouchable institution is not only just straight up wrong, but also just really boring?? The imperfections of the Order and those involved give the Jedi nuance and make them feel incredibly real and interesting. Things are not black and white in Star Wars. Let yourself feel conflicted about the Jedi and wish for them to succeed anyway. It’s more exciting that way, I promise.

Did Bethany invite you? – No matter. It is lovely to have you here for tea with us; please do sit, for you are very welcome, as always. Bethany will be along as soon as she can. How do you do?’

Merrill returned the requisite greetings, and added: ‘Am I interrupting you? I’m so sorry if I am – I am sure you would like to read your letter.’

‘Oh! It is fine, Merrill, please be assured of that. I have already read it; I was just reading it again when you called.’

‘It looks as if it was good news,’ Merrill observed, for the smile remained on Miss Hawke’s face, and her blue-green eyes were bright; she looked more radiant than Merrill had ever seen her.

‘Oh yes! Very good news.’
