I forgot if I ever posted about this publicly or privately but fully inspired by Harry's mdzs au my opinions on a svsss furry au will always be that
-Shen Yuan is vehemently "not a furry but just likes supporting artists" who was pretty active in closed species circles for having a ridiculous amount of super expensive rare species that he found really cool. Shen Jiu (no relation) is a very controversial popufur who runs in adjacent circles that sy has a huge grudge against after seeing sj bully a bunch of teen furries (binghe) for their half angle half devile wolf ocs, but even sy has to admit that sj's fursona Shen Qingqiu is really really cool. Sj eventually decides to cut ties with the whole community after getting into another new discourse and sells all of his accounts and fursona art to a broker, who then sells it to sy. Sy logs into the account and is about to reveal what happened, but Yue Qingyuan sends him a super long vent/crying dm and sy feels too guilty and awkward to come clean after getting that bombshell and so he ends up impersonating Shen_Qingqiu in the elite closed DeviantArt group Cang Qiong Mtn Sect group
-Binghe is in the group mostly as a punching bag for everyone to make fun of his half angel half demon oc Xin Mo, but sy recognizes him as the kid he saw sj bully despite being super humble and with great potential for art, so he decides to take him under his wing (I think I was imagining sqq as a dutch angel dragon but whatever you believe here you can replace that with an appropriate body part). Sy ends up buying binghe a super rare Sushidog named Zhen Yang and while sy is like well nbd some artist got a paycheck and some kid got a cute new adopt but as we all know Binghe is Irreparably changed Forever from this
-Airplane is a popular furry porn writer known for taking hyperspecific commissions and flagrantly ignoring closed species rules in his smut peddling. Sy hates him for this of course and also because his porn isn't that good, but he still reads all of Airplane's gay original werewolf species porn just because wolves are really cool ok!! Sy isn't even gay he just thinks it's so cool how the three headed demon wolf has a three tiered society and--. Airplane loves to fuck with sy by making sock puppet accounts advertising shoddy bootleg closed species like deltagens instead of primagens or something like that. Also btw airplane has a hamster fursuit but only the head and paws since he can't afford a full one, he just poodles at cons
- Mobei Jun is not a furry but his family owns a hotel chain that regularly hosts furcons. During one of these he was sent by his father to shadow staff addressing a misbehavior complaint against the furcon attendees and accidentally ran into half-fursuited airplane, during which it was somehow love at first sight. Airplane doesn't know that tho he thinks mbj is still mad at him for smoking weed in his hotel room at that con they met at when they were both 17

[Link to submissions]
This would allow divine items and weapons, such as Taerang (a divine relic from LCF that turns into a gun), into the tournament. There wasn't a specific reason I made it cultivation weapons specifically - I just forgot most people aren't weird about weapons like me, and it might be a bit niche for just cultivation weapons. The submission deadline will likely be extended regardless, and if there's a clear winner to this poll, I may not wait till it's done.
Submissions & Dealer's Choice under the cut
(CW: suggestive language, spoilers)
Submissions
Xuan Su - Yue Qingyuan’s sword (SVSSS)
No propaganda submitted
Xuan Su is Yue Qingyuan’s iconic sword that is only drawn twice after he suffers from a qi deviation bonding his life force to Xuan Su.
Zheng Yang - Luo Binghe’s sword (SVSSS)
Submission: Something about a childhood sword that was broken, then preserved, then restored, and in the end was the one that remained, instead of the more powerful one that brought only misery.
Potential Dealer's Choice
(Submit these to make sure they make it in & add propaganda!)
2ha / the Husky and His White Cat Shizun
Jiangui / Ah! What the Hell
“There is only one person in this world who can open Ever-Yearning. This person is extremely important in your life; you must love this person dearly, and this person must also love you in return, and be wholly devoted to you.” - Ji Baihua regarding the Ever-Yearning box containing Jiangui
Mo Ran’s Holy weapon in his second life, Jiangui - which translates to “Ah! What the hell” due to Mo Ran accidentally exclaiming this when opening the Ever-Yearning box.
Bu’gui [“No Return”] / Guilai [“To Return”]
“No Return… Affairs of the past upon vermillion bridge in emerald green; Another year goes but still you do not return.” - Chapter 81
Bu’gui was Mo Ran’s sword in the original timeline that he received by bringing a plum blossom branch to an old dragon named Wangyue. He had Chu Wanning seal it until he could think of a name for it, and it was only named “No Return” after Chu Wanning’s death.
In the second lifetime, he received Jiangui instead, but Bu’gui appeared once more at Xuanyuan Pavilion and was auctioned off to the Rufeng Sect for 5 million; this time it was referred to as Guilai or “To Return.”
CWN - Tianwen, Jiu’ge, Huaisha (undecided)
Longcheng / Dragon City - Xue Meng’s sword
Since Xue Meng could not receive a holy weapon from Jincheng Lake, he used Longcheng, a high-quality scimitar from Taxue Palace. From what I remember, Mo Ran gifted him the Wangshu Crystal from the Carp Essence that was requested by Song Qiutong to help him cultivate/add to his sword, making it something similar to a “heavenly weapon.”
Xue Zhengyong’s fan
While this fan is never named, Xue Zhengyong’s fan is well-known due to the writing on it - “Xue is beautiful” (which faces others) and “others are ugly” (which faces him). It really is iconic
“Xue is beautiful, others are ugly.” - Chapter 31
MDZS
Suibian
Suibian is Wei Wuxian’s sword that sealed itself after his death. Its name translates to “Whatever” due to Wei Wuxian’s inability to think of a suitable name and telling Jiang Fengmian to name it “whatever.” This is, in my opinion, the funniest thing Jiang Fengmian has ever done in his life
Bichen
Yes, this is the sword Wei Wuxian stuck up his ass in the Incense Burner Extra. It’s also Lan Wangji’s main weapon that was included in the iconic “Lan Wangji calling Wei Wuxian his scene” where Wei Wuxian believes he’s pointing toward Bichen (Chapter 31). It’s a legend, and I would be doing a disservice to Jin Guangyao (who Bichen defeated in the first round of the Danmei Character Tournament) if I did not include it.

Scum Villain Cheat Sheet. For Fanfic writers :D
Scum Villain Cheat Sheet [the OG was lost but I REFUSE]
I forget names and stuff because my brain is no longer the sponge it used to be -_-
SO all of the stuff + Images are here to help me remember what is called what- who is who so that way I'm not CONSTANTLY using google.
So this is just everything for a fanfic cheat-sheet.
So let's start with Sect leaders. Who are sect leaders? Cultivation masters in charge of each ‘sect’ of cultivators.
There are Four and the first Sect is the Cang Qiong Mountain. On this Mountain it is called Cang cong Mountain. There is bai zhan peak [Jocks- aka focus of martial arts/fighting] There is Jing Peak [Nerds- I mean scholars and arts]
Each masters names/ characters changes to Qing - [I’m not fluent but from the book itself I’ve noticed the peak lords have Qing in their names]
Shen Jiu changed to Shen QingQiuLiu Qingge Yue qingYuan etc
So we have the main Character Shen Qingqiu the Peak lord of Jing peak.
Tumblr media
So we have the main 'Villain' of Proud Immortal Demon way.
Shen Jiu- Art by @velinxi
In his ‘unscrapped’ origin Shen Jiu was a fully fleshed out villain, abused as a child and became twisted, the mirror to the blackened protagonist Luo Binghe.
Shen Jiu was abused by Qui Jianlou [A-Lou] and was then forced to marry Qui Haitang, forced into service-ship and continuously abused. Shen Jiu fought his way out, killing only the men and leaving the women and children. After seeing the Qiu massacre, Wu Yanzi took him in and taught him to rob and murder and learned tricks and dirty ploys he would incorporate into his fighting style even during adulthood.
Shen Jiu started his cultivation too late, and Wu Yanzi may have fucked up his cultivation even more.
__________________________________________________________
Shen Qingqiu: TITLE: Xiu Ya Sword [Elegant and Refined] RANK: Peak Lord Qing Jing Peak
Shen QIngqiu surname shen 'Clear Autumn' from the animated Scumbag villain series>
Shen Qingqiu is the Sect Leader of Qing Jing Peak- The sect mastering the four arts and known as Scholars [NERD!]
He was recocmended by Yue Qingyuan, both were homeless. Yue Qingyuan left Shen Jiu to be a cultivator and promised to return.
Meanwhile Shen Jiu arrived on Cang Qiong peak and was allowed in due to Yue Qingyuans quilt and yet him get away with [literal] murder.
Yue QIngyuan  never told him the reason why he took so long so Shen Jiu thought he was abandoned and now his name is Shen Qingqiu he can never escape the name Qiu.
__________________________________________________________
And the idiot in the third image is Shen Yaun the one who 'Transmigrated' in the Scum Villains body- OUR protagonist :D
Shen Yuan Is Also known as “Peerless Cucumber.”
Had a younger sister and two older brothers pre-transmigration-
Shen Yuan was the third son of a rich family spending his days idling about. He is described to be thin, and his face resembled that “Of a dispirited pretty boy sitting around waiting to die.” Shen Yuan was twenty when he died. Either of:
Food Poisioning [Confirmed by mxtx on twitter]
Pure rage
Chocked on food [Donghua]
He passed the exam to the Beijing University. One the worldwide top research university.

The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 9, Part 2 of 2
(spoilers for everything MDZS/Untamed)
[covers MDZS chapters 28 and 29...kinda….]
WangXian meter: 🐰🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰+🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰 +🐰🐰🐰+🐰🐰+🐰🐰+🐰+🐰+🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰🐰
Continued from Part 1:
Aside from the fact that Wei Ying grabbing and pulling on Lan Zhan’s tassle like a leash is really one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen, I think it’s also adorable how Lan Zhan went from not even tolerating Wei Ying touching his sleeve to now putting up with him poking him and holding onto his wrist. Once again he never makes any attempt to shake him off and instead allows Wei Ying to lead him forward. Watching the little ways Wei Ying is changing Lan Zhan is so endearing and rewarding. I’m so glad Wei Ying came on this mission with him. According to Big Bro Xichen, Lan Zhan’s never had friends before, the reason he wanted Lan Zhan to attend classes at Cloud Recesses was so that he could make friends with people his own age. However, considering his cold and aloof disposition, it’s doubtful he would have made any friends if Wei Ying hadn’t come along and been so insistent on gaining his friendship. Just thinking of the boys that were at Cloud Recesses with them—Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, Jin Zixuan, Wen Ning, in addition to all those other nameless disciples—whom among them would have even made the slightest effort to get through to Lan Zhan? Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan couldn’t care less, Nie Huaisang seems downright scared of him, and Wen Ning probably feels the same, not to mention, I can‘t even imagine shy sweet Wen Ning trying to proactively make friends with anyone anyway. Therefore, if it wasn’t for Wei Ying, Lan Zhan would have ended up as friendless and alone as he started out being. He probably never experienced something as simple as sitting down and having a meal or drinks with his peers, and yet now he’s doing it as if it was just the most mundane event for him. To think, if Wei Ying hadn’t invited himself along on this secret mission, thereby eventually bringing in Jiang Cheng and NHS as well, Lan Zhan would’ve been all alone through this journey...who would’ve been there to comfort him when that yin metal went all haywire on him?
Tumblr media
Fascinating thing about this moment that I noticed is that the words (the Chinese characters specifically) Wei Ying uses to calm Lan Zhan are the same exact words that Lan Zhan uses later on at Phoenix Mountain when he is trying to calm Wei Ying down as he is being overcome with dark rage.
Tumblr media
I would love to think that Team CQL set up this parallelism on purpose to show how Lan Zhan remembers everything that Wei Ying did for him and said to him, even down to the usage of two simple calming words. It melts my heart to imagine Lan Zhan carefully collecting all these memories and holding on tightly to them because every single moment they shared together became so important to him. When I think about how he probably lived on just those memories alone, not only during the sixteen long years when Wei Ying was dead, but probably even during the times when they were apart while he was still alive, I just feel so unbelievably sad for Lan Zhan that my eyes always well up with tears.
Yeah, I pretty much get weepy once a day because of these boys. Unfortunately I’m not exaggerating at all.
Nie Huaisang/Ji Li Appreciation Time
Tumblr media
To be honest, I don’t know if what I feel about Nie Huaisang could really be called love, even though I think I’ve thrown that word around when referring to him at least once. I definitely don’t hate him...he’s too complex and interesting and adorable in his own way to hate. And I did buy into his dumb, naïve and helpless act for a long time, much like everyone did. But I can’t say I really love him anymore either because of what he did to dear, sweet Big Bro Xichen, which was really unnecessarily cruel. It’s premature to go into all that now, so all I’m going to say is, while my feelings towards him are probably more on the ambivalent side overall, I do really appreciate him as a character, especially at this point of the story, because he’s always so funny and entertaining. I’d like to think that he did genuinely like Wei Ying as a friend because, as exemplified in the scene above, Wei Ying was actually really nice and considerate to him, not to mention protective. I hope that was part of NHS' motivation for reviving Wei Ying later on, and not just because he thought the Yiling Patriarch would be the only one strong enough to deal with the Stygian tiger seal.
Despite how I feel about NHS, I do really enjoy Ji Li’s portrayal of the character, and I think his voice performance is awesome as well. I believe he’s the only actor on the show that used his own voice whereas everyone else’s dubbing was performed by a voice actor, and his voice work definitely made NHS even more fun as a character. He definitely has a talent for voice acting. He’s been cast in the Hikaru no Go live action due to be released next year and I cannot be more excited. I can totally imagine him as Sai. (Although, there’s not much information on the show yet from what I can see; looks like one of the male leads has been cast and also a female, but no other information on their actual roles...God I hope they don’t decide to turn Hikaru no Go into a BG romance because that’s not what it’s about AT ALL.)
ChengQing
Tumblr media
We didn’t really see his reaction but when Wei Ying grabbed Wen Qing’s wrist, I did wonder how Jiang Cheng felt about it. Here he is, trying his hardest to gain Wen Qing’s favor, but all of his efforts seem to be mostly futile since she hardly gives him the time of her day. Honestly, for a while as I was watching the show for the first time, I did worry that Team CQL was trying to create a love triangle between Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing/Wei Ying. Even after reading the novel and knowing nothing of the sort exists in the source material, because Wen Qing’s characterization in the show was already so different from her novel counterpart, my concern remained for quite some time. I hated the mere idea a lot because it’s such a tropey and stupid gimmick, especially since Jiang Cheng really didn’t need yet another reason to be angry at Wei Ying. I’m glad they didn’t go in that horrible direction after all, but I don’t think I was able to breathe easy about the issue until after her death.  Poor Wen Qing, she gave me so much anxiety throughout the first half of the show; I would be lying if I said I wasn’t more than a teeny bit relieved when she died because I was finally able to lay my worries to rest completely.
Odds and Ends
Tumblr media
I just love these three stooges; they’re so adorable together and I wish we got to see them engage in more shenanigans before all the fun was over forever.
Tumblr media
When I first saw this scene, I thought it was pretty horrific and creepy; really, it’s one of the most effective scenes in the show. However, now, when I see this scene, my heart clenches a little because I know that’s the same fate that will eventually befall the Yunmeng Jiang sect as well. The fact that both Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying are present to see that horrible tableau just makes things worse, especially the sight of those two sect leaders hanging in the doorway. Completely heart-breaking.
Tumblr media
Wen Qing being able to control the ghost puppets with the flute was totally a creation for the live action since she never did that in the novel, but I actually thought it was a neat touch. At first I thought she was going to be the one to teach Wei Ying that ability, but when that didn’t pan out, I wondered if he was inspired to learn that ability after seeing her do that. While it does take away Wei Ying’s inventiveness since in the novel that was a skill he developed on his own, I didn’t mind that change since it also established that other people can control the ghost puppets as well, which nicely sets up what Su She does later on with that skill. Interestingly enough, she’s playing “Rest” so now I wonder if she learned that during her time at Cloud Recesses and if so, does that mean essentially Wei Ying’s inspiration for fluting can be traced back to his time there as well, which means he was able to survive the Burial Mounds really because of his tutelage by the Gusu Lan sect. Omg that’s so sweet.
Anyway, I just wish we got to see Wen Qing do more with that skill, it’s kind of odd how later on she relied on Wei Ying completely for calming Wen Ning when she seems to be perfectly capable of that feat as well. It’s like the show forgot she had this ability.
Question I still had
Tumblr media
So basically, Lan Zhan met A-Yuan this early on but he completely forgot about that little Wen kid when they crossed paths again in Yiling? It’s no big deal, but I just thought that was rather odd considering Lan Zhan is usually more observant than that and of course he has a really good memory. I guess there’s always the possibility that he just didn’t care enough about the Wens to notice the kid.
Overall Episode Rating: 8 Lil Apples out of 10

Well, if I’m engaging in this whole….string-covered wall-of-crazy calculation, I might as well post it.
Given how much of “Word of Honor” is a Glazed Armor quest/shell-game, it seemed useful to note exactly where the fool pieces start out and what happens to them. I’ve split up the “Glazed Armor pieces” and the “Armory Key,” because the Key doesn’t come up until later in the story and follows a different trajectory.
As we know, twenty years ago, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked Rong Xuan, the runaway disciple of Changming Mountain Immortal Ye Baiyi, gathered a group of martial artists from different sects, plus the Longyuan Cabinet, and together they created the World’s Armory, using an abandoned stronghold/library from an ancient kingdom, filling it with texts from the various sects. Their idealistic plan to combine all of that knowledge failed; Rong Xuan was poisoned; his wife, a member of the Miracle Healer Valley, saved him using forbidden techniques that caused him to go insane, whereupon he was defeated in a massive battle outside of Ghost Valley.
The Magical Wuxia McGuffin Glazed Armor, the key to the World’s Armory, was divided between the five young men who would become the leaders of the sects that make up the Five Lakes Alliance. They did not share the Glazed Armor or the Armory with the rest of the martial arts world- at least partly because, without the key, the doors won’t actually open. “Word of Honor” opens with an Armory/Rong Xuan-related flashback, setting up the extent to which the pieces of the Glazed Armor (and later the Armory key) will shape the plot.
The Glazed Armor Pieces:
Imaginary Glazed Armor: “Hanging Ghost stole my Glazed Armor!” Wen Kexing declares, in full murder make-up mode having a) just killed Hanging Ghost and b) never had a piece of the Glazed Armor. However, this imaginary Ghost Valley piece of Glazed Armor is the justification for sending out all of the Ghosts into the human world to supposedly try to track down Hanging Ghost, but really to start Phase One of Wen Kexing's complicated revenge plot. The idea that Ghost Valley has at least one piece of Glazed Armor also causes complications later.
Tumblr media
Glazed Armor Piece 1 (round exterior bit): In the possession of Gao Chong, leader of the Yue Yang Sect and the leader of the Five Lakes Alliance. He hands it over to Mo Huaiyang, leader of the Gentle Wind Sect (Qing Feng Sect), before the Hero’s Conference. Later, Xie Wang (Scorpion King/leader of the assassin's group Venemous Scorpions, just wants his adoptive father Zhao Jing to love him and be proud of him) takes it off of Mo Huaiyang’s corpse, sadly without stabbing him some more.
Glazed Armor Piece 2 (round exterior bit): In the possession of Shen Shen, leader of the Da Gu Shan Sect, part of the Five Lakes Alliance. He gives it to Gao Chong when Gao Chong asks for it, and Gao Chong hands it over to Mo Huaiyang before the Hero’s Conference. Later, Xie Wang takes it.
Glazed Armor Piece 3 (small connecting bit): In the possession of Zhang Yusen, leader of the Jing Hu Sword Sect (Mirror Lake- and why I am having trouble finding the other sect names in English I could not say). When Mirror Lake is attacked by a group from Ghost Valley, Zhang Yusen makes a cut in the stomach of his youngest son, Zhang Chengling, and hides the Glazed Armor piece in the wound. Since everybody assumes (correctly) that Zhang Chengling is carrying his father’s piece of the Glazed Armor, Zhang Chengling becomes a target for kidnapping by the Begger’s Guild and the Scorpions and for very loud lectures from Shen Shen and Gao Cheng. After telling Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing about the Glazed Armor, Zhang Chengling tries to give the piece to them, but Zhou Zishu, who is extremely disinterested in it, tells him to give it to Gao Chong so that he’s no longer a target. Back in the Yue Yang sect, Zhang Chengling dramatically removes the piece in front of Gao Chong and hands it over. This is the third piece that Gao Chong collects and hands over to Mo Huaiyang before the Hero’s Conference, all of which are then taken by Xie Wang.
Glazed Armor Piece Four (the third round exterior bit): This piece originally belonged to Lu Taichong, leader of the Dan Yang Sect, who gets killed offscreen, along with almost all of the members of his sect. Before he dies, he entrusts his two remaining disciples and his piece of the Glazed Amor to Ao Laizi, leader of the Tai Shan Sect (which is part of the Wu Yue Sword Alliance). Ao Laizi fends off both Lv Liu Weng and Tao Hong Po when they come after the Glazed Armor, and then also manages to use the arrival of Zhao Jing and co. to fend off Shen Shen. Then he gets killed by Happy Ghost (it’s implied), and Long-Tongued Ghost puts the Glazed Armor piece into the bottom of his box of soul-winding thread, heading off to the ancestral hall (“Coffin House”) of the Zhao family to wait for Xie Wang to show up for the hand-off. Exceeept Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing manage to defeat the various traps, and Wen Kexing kills Long-Tongued Ghost and takes the box. When Zhou Zishou opens the box and discovers the Glazed Armor, he tosses it over to Wen Kexing, who a) is shocked that Zhou Zishu really was serious about not wanting the Glazed Amor and b) immediately starts trying to figure out how he can leverage this to cause maximum chaos. Wen Kexing later gives this piece to Xie Wang as part of their deal.
Tumblr media
Glazed Armor Piece Five (the spiked circle in the center): In the possession of Zhao Jing, leader of the Tai Hu Sect. Zhao Jing takes advantage of the banquet welcoming Zhang Chengling and the murder of Ao Laizi to have his godson Song Huiren, who is one of the favored disciples of the Yue Yang sect, “steal” his piece from its hiding place and “escape” with it, killing Yu Tianjie when Yu Tianjie pursues the “thief.” Unfortunately for Song Huairen, Xie Wang is NOT here for their yifu having other sons he might like better, so Xie Wang kills him, takes the Glazed Armor, and tells Zhao Jing that Song Huairen had been a traitor. Xie Wang keeps this piece on a chain around his neck, as a statement of his loyalty, but also inadvertently kind of sort of as a future creepy trophy for Worst Yifu Zhao Jing.
Fake Glazed Armor One: When Wen Kexing gets Glazed Armor Piece Four, he cheerfully visits a glass maker and demands thirty copies, which he proceeds to scatter around in advance of the Hero’s Conference in the hopes of creating chaos (oops). In addition to interrupting a lovely moonlit date and causing his first quarrel with Zhou Zishu, the Fake Glazed Armor leads to the tragic deaths of the Four Sages of Anji… and, much later, to the tragic death of Han Ying. However, it also seems to have given Gao Chong a useful idea….
Fake Glazed Armor Two-Four: Gao Chong, having handed the real Glazed Armor pieces to Mo Huaiyang, comes to the Hero’s Conference prepared with three fake pieces, which he then very publicly smashes. Sadly, this does not fool people for long, and the Gentle Wind Sect becomes a target. Even more sadly, Mo Huaiyang does not get stabbed at this time.
The Armory Key
Yue Feng’er, senior disciple of Miracle Healer’s Valley and wife of Rong Xuan, gives the key to Gu Miaomiao and Wen Ruyu (the "Divine Hands" of Miracle Healer Valley) to take to Ye Baiyi at Changming Mountain. Unfortunately, this goes… poorly.
Imaginary Amory Key: In a vain attempt to take the target off of Gu Miaomiao and Wen Ruyu’s backs, Longyuan Cabinet leader Long Que spreads a rumor that Longyuan Cabinet has the Armory Key and then relocates the Cabinet to a more secure, secret location.
Fake Armory Key One: Wen Kexing holds up this fake key when he’s carrying out his fake death plan as a way to rile up his opponents (who, frankly, don't need any more riling).
Fake Armory Key Two: As part of their deal, Wen Kexing hands this fake key over to Xie Wang, who for some reason is shocked- SHOCKED- that it then doesn’t work.
Actual Armory Key: Gu Miaomiao and Wen Ruyu hide the Armory key by putting it in their son’s hair; he keeps it, and wears it frequently. Later, of course, he gives it to Zhou Zishu because they are very very married… and then uses it to open the Armory.

A Comparison of the Stairs Dialogue in CQL vs MDZS, Pt 1
(Pt 2)
A few introductory notes:
-This wasn't intended to be a big project post; I was just doing the comparison because I thought it was interesting. As I went I thought other people would probably find it interesting too, and it would be worth having it all written down, so I did turn it into a post after all. But I'm not really arguing any central point or anything; I'm really just comparing the dialogue and writing down my thoughts as I go.
-This also of course means my usual pro-JGY and consequently very annoyed at NMJ biases are on display. As ever, if this will upset you, please don't read!!
-This is a comparison of the text of the dialogue, not everything about their interaction; I don't necessarily note it if e.g. the acting doesn't match the dialogue tags in MDZS, or what have you.
-To do a proper comparison, you really need to compare the Chinese text, not the English translation; this is what I'm doing, though of course I've included the English from the Youtube subs, for CQL, and from the Exiled Rebels translation for MDZS. (For the Youtube subs I recorded "Yao" as A-Yao and used da-ge instead of Big brother when 大哥 was used and er-ge when 二哥 was used, just because this is my habit when copying down the dialogue.)
-Speaking of which: for MDZS, I just copied from the text, but for the CQL dialogue both English and Chinese I copied down the subs. I don't actually speak Chinese, but fortunately CQL on Youtube has the Chinese subs as well; my reading level in Chinese is also completely terrible, but I can often recognize most or many of the characters, and what I can't I can find by identifying radicals or drawing it in a handwriting recognition thing, etc. I did my best to be careful and thorough, and I also checked it against the Chinese subs I downloaded from Netflix, but there may still be some errors, fair warning. This also means that, unlike the Chinese from MDZS, the CQL Chinese dialogue isn't punctuated beyond spacing it out as it appeared on the screen; this is because the Chinese subs aren't punctuated, and I am certainly not going to make that judgement myself.
-The characters that differ in a given line between the MDZS and CQL versions are bolded, to help make the difference visually clear.
With that aside, the comparison is below the cut.
CQL
LXC: 阿瑶 大哥他心性不比从前 你千万不要再惹怒他了 他最近深受刀灵侵扰之苦 若不是你日日给他弹清心音的话 恐怕他 A-Yao. Da-ge's temperament is getting worse. Don't ever displease him again. He's been subject to the harassment of his blade lately. If you hadn't been playing Cleansing Music for him everyday, I'm afraid he'd be…
MDZS
LXC: 只是一时气愤,口不择言罢了。大哥现在心性不比从前, 你千万不要再惹怒他了。他最近深受刀灵侵扰之苦, 怀桑又和他争吵置气,到今天还没和好。 His anger was simply too great for him to have thought before speaking. Brother’s temper cannot compare to how it was in the past. You must not provoke him again. These past few days, he has been deeply troubled by the saber spirit, and HuaiSang has argued with him again. They still have not made up yet, even today.
I'm comparing the CQL dialogue to the equivalent dialogue in MDZS, but of course in MDZS this exchange isn't before the stairs in ch 49; rather it's part of a broader conversation NMJ hears before he bursts in to try and kill JGY on the spot, because he doesn't like how JGY is talking to LXC about him, in ch 50. (Note, incidentally, how obviously impossible this renders the task of not displeasing da-ge, even aside from his not being satisfied with anything less than Xue Yang's head, as JGY and LXC were having a private conversation at the time.) The mention of NMJ and NHS' falling out is removed, replaced with the information that JGY has been playing to MMJ "every day"; the reference to NMJ calling JGY son of a whore is of course removed, since it hasn't happened yet. One effect of this relocation is on our understanding of LXC's injunction not to "displease him again/provoke him again" (再惹怒他 in both). In MDZS, this seems to refer to the stairs incident where JGY talked back (as the text notes, unusually); here perhaps it might be read as suggesting that JGY somehow has a habit of avoidably displeasing NMJ, which I think is absurd.
However, that's not the only possible interpretation. Although CQL doesn't quite give us the scene mentioned in chapter 30, where NMJ shows up and lectures JGS into announcing XY would be executed (…and heaps abuse on JGY when he tries to intervene, terrifying JGY sufficiently that he hides behind LXC—observe that in the sentence immediately prior to this we are also told that NMJ had unsheathed his sabre), in episode 35 we are told that all the clans wanted to punish XY except for JGS, and given a brief flashback to JGS yelling. Therefore, I think, it's not unreasonable to assume that something like the scene described in ch 30 occurred in CQL. Perhaps LXC is referring to this, although of course JGY would still be held between the fatal opposition of NMJ's and his father's wishes.
It's also relevant of course that in removing the surrounding context, CQL removes the context of the conversation of JGY expressing his pain about how NMJ treats him, and LXC replying, and rather turns it into an apparently unprompted expression of concern on LXC's part.
CQL
NMJ: 金光瑶 Jin Guangyao!
MDZS
-
It's worth noting, I think, that in MDZS NMJ never refers to JGY as "Jin Guangyao" throughout the entire stairs encounter.
CQL
LXC: 大哥 怎么了 Da-ge, what's wrong?
MDZS
LXC: 大哥 Da-ge?
CQL
NMJ: 你别动 你出来 (to LXC) Don't move. (to JGY) Come out.
MDZS
NMJ: 你别动 你出来 (to LXC) Don't move. (To JGY) Come out.
CQL
JGY: 二哥 劳烦你帮我再过一眼 百花宴贵宾的名单 我先去和大哥说点私事 回头再请你讲解 Er-ge, please check the list of guests of the Floral Banquet for me. I need to talk some private affairs with da-ge. I'll explain it to you later.
MDZS
JGY: 二哥劳烦你再帮我理一理这条,我先去和大哥说点私事,回头再请你讲解 Brother, could you please help me go through this one? I have some private matters to discuss with our eldest brother. I’ll have to ask for your explanation at a later time.
Interestingly the exact same sentence in the Chinese, 回头再请你讲解, is translated in CQL as JGY's promise to explain later—where the implication seems to be he'll explain about what he's discussing with NMJ, perhaps?—and in MDZS as JGY's intention to ask /LXC/ to explain (the work he's going over in JGY's absence) later. In MDZS, of course, they're working on the watchtowers…while in CQL host with the most LXC is /helping JGY put his banquet guest lists together/, omg. I wish they'd kept more about the watchtowers but I admit I enjoy this as well. They plan parties together!
In both CQL and MDZS NMJ tries to hit JGY after they are outside and before further words are exchanged.
CQL
JGY: 大哥 何必如此 有话好说 Da-ge. Why act like this? We can talk nicely, can't we?
MDZS
JGY: 大哥,何必如此,有话好说。 Brother, why the rage? Let’s calm down.
CQL
NMJ: 薛洋呢 Where is Xue Yang?
MDZS
NMJ: 薛洋呢 Where's Xue Yang?
CQL
JGY: 他已被关入地牢 终身不释 He's been shut up in the dungeon, for life time.
MDZS
JGY: 他已被关入地牢,终身不释…… He’s already been locked inside the dungeon, imprisoned for life…
CQL
NMJ: 我当年在不净世是怎么跟你说的 我要他血债血偿 你却给他来个终身不释 What did I tell you in the Yet Clean Realm at that time? I want him to pay his killing debts. You now give him life imprisonment.
MDZS
NMJ: 当初你在我面前是怎么说的 (JGY is silent) 我要他血债血偿,你却给他个终身不释? What did you say to me back then? (JGY is silent) I wanted him to pay blood with blood, yet you have him imprisoned for life?
"What did you say to me back then" is interesting; we're not actually given a specific time or a specific thing said, which means we must speculate. An obvious candidate for 'back then' would be the ch 30 scene previously mentioned, when NMJ convinces the Jin to announce that they'll execute XY. Yet the Jin giving in on executing XY seems to come /after/ JGY is sufficiently frightened by NMJ that he hides behind LXC, "not daring to say anything else." NMJ is perhaps conflating JGY with JGY's father, or perhaps assigning to JGY an authority he does not in fact possess, as though JGY and not JGS was the person who made decisions for the Jin.
In CQL of course NMJ takes the position that /Jin Guangyao/ owes him obedience because Meng Yao used to be NMJ's servant—not even just that, but that Jin Guangyao must display obedience to orders NMJ gave several years ago, when JGY was MY. This is absurd and insulting, and even before NMJ actually calls him Meng Yao it demonstrates that NMJ does not actually recognize JGY's legitimacy /as/ Jin Guangyao. Honestly, I don't have the words.
CQL
JGY: 只要他受到惩罚 无法再犯 终身不释和血债血偿也并无 As long as he's punished, and can't recommit crimes, I can't see the difference between life imprisonment and death sentence.
MDZS
JGY: 只要他受到惩罚,无法再犯,终身不释与血债血偿也并无…… As long as he receives his punishment and can’t offend again, perhaps paying blood with blood and being imprisoned for life is…
CQL
NMJ: 我问你 当年在不净世 究竟是谁放走了薛洋 是我的总领 还是你 Tell me. When we were at Yet Clean Realm, who on earth released Xue Yang? It was my captain, or you?
MDZS
NMJ: 你举荐的好客卿,做出的好事情!事到如今你还敢袒护他! The good things that the good guest cultivator whom you recommended has done! Things are already like this and you still dare defend him!
Imho, this gets to a central fault in the CQL XY storyline—why the heck is NMJ trying to have XY killed for the Chang killings, instead of for collaborating with the Wen and/or for killing a bunch of his men??????
I tend to put that aside because it doesn't… actually… make any sense at all, especially since CQL NMJ is quite clearly still preoccupied with XY's old crimes.
CQL
JGY: 我没有 我为什么要放走他 不过当初是当初 现在常萍已经翻供 没有任何明确证据证明 薛洋屠杀了常氏五十人 而我父亲又一定要留下这个人 It wasn't me. Why should I let him go? But the past is in the past, Chang Ping had withdrawn his confession. No certain evidence can prove that Xue Yang had massacred 50 people of Chang clan. And my father insists on keeping him alive.
MDZS
JGY: 我没有袒护他,栎阳常氏那件事我也很震惊,我怎会料到薛洋会杀了人全家五十多口人?可我父亲一定要留着这个人…… I didn’t defend him. I was also shocked by the case of the Changyang Yue Sect. How could I have known that Xue Yang would kill more than fifty people? But my father was set on keeping him…
So—I'm sorry, that in CQL Chang Ping has already withdrawn his testimony makes this completely absurd. In MDZS, that doesn't happen until /after/ NMJ's death, after the Jin have been hounding him! In CQL, the situation appears to be that they have officially condemned him to the dungeons for life /purely based on NMJ's pressure/, with no actual clear evidence at all—and note that unlike in MDZS, where the Chang killings happened like a month beforehand and XXC presents the evidence that it was XY to the assembled clans, in CQL the killings happened /several years ago before a war/ and Songxiao didn't present any evidence it was XY to anyone else at the time that we saw. I mean, they didn't need to because at the time he confessed when challenged,* but it's not at all clear to me what if any evidence is left! And—in this situation where the one surviving victim is publically saying it wasn't XY, and they're /still officially locking him up for life on NMJ's say-so/—NMJ thinks that JGY should nevertheless go and execute XY.
*To an audience that if I am not misremembering included JC, who was alive and a sect leader independent from NMJ and could presumably have been asked to testify at the trial. This doesn't seem to ever be mentioned, however. Again, the CQL XY subplot doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
I can only guess that they moved up the Chang Ping revokes his testimony timeline to emphasize Jin power? But to me it has almost the opposite effect, since if they're still locking XY up on NMJ's say-so it rather suggests /NMJ's/ power; and more to the point it makes NMJ's already frankly unreasonable demand completely and ludicrously absurd.
CQL
NMJ: 为什么 他身上还有一块阴铁你不知道吗 你把他重新招揽回来 究竟是为了什么你自己心里清楚 Why? Don't you know he's got a shard of Yin Iron on him? You're trying to reclaim him now. I can clearly see what you have in mind.
MDZS
NMJ: 震惊?招揽他的是谁?举荐他的是谁?重用他的是谁?少拿你父亲当幌子,薛洋在干什么,你会不知道吗?! Shocked? Who was the one that invited him? Who was the one that recommended him? Who was the one that regarded him highly? Don’t use your father as excuse. How could you not have known what Xue Yang was doing?!
English of course doesn't distinguish between plural and singular second-person, but I think it's worth noting that NMJ is using singular here, 你, and not plural. This is true in both CQL and MDZS. In MDZS, I think the problem is that, although he is in fact referring to things JGY individually did, he refuses to accept the truth of JGY's position: that whatever JGY knew or did not know, he can't actually afford to kill XY if that's not what JGS wants. In CQL, by contrast, the problem is that he's locating the desire to obtain the Yin Iron specifically in JGY, despite JGS'…well, JGS' entire everything.
CQL
JGY: 大哥 真的是我父亲的命令 我无法拒绝 你现在要我处置薛洋 我该怎么去跟他交代 Da-ge, this is really my father's order. I couldn't deny. If you want me to execute Xue Yang now, in which way can I report this to him?
MDZS
JGY: 大哥,真的是我父亲的命令。我没法拒绝。你现在要我处置薛洋,你让我怎么跟他交代 Brother, it really was my father’s orders. I couldn’t refuse. Now, if you want me to take care of Xue Yang, what would I say to him?
The use of 你 vs the more formal 您 throughout this exchange is interesting. In their exchange before JGY goes outside with NMJ, he uses 你 for LXC; here, he uses 你 for NMJ, but you can see throughout the exchange he seems to use both. It would probably be very interesting to go through the text and observe which JGY uses, to whom, and when.
CQL
-
MDZS
NMJ: 不必废话,提薛洋头来见。 There’s no need for explanations. Come back to me with Xue Yang’s head in your hand.
CQL
—
MDZS
JGY "wanted to speak"
I think the upshot of these exchanges is much the same in CQL and in MDZS, despite its shortening in CQL: NMJ utterly rejects the validity of JGY's desire to give NMJ a /reason/ for going against JGS' explicit wishes, the explicit wishes, I remind you, of a man he has a moral duty to obey as his clan head and father. Truly, we can only imagine how NMJ would react to JGY killing someone against the wishes of the leader of the clan he served because he deserves it in JGY's own moral judgement… Except of course we don't have to imagine it, because it occurs in both CQL and MDZS, albeit differently. It's not that NMJ recognizes as a general principle that subordinates should be allowed to kill people against their leader's wishes if that subordinate judges their victim deserves it; it's simply that he believes in the primacy of his own, obviously righteous judgement. (And in CQL, again, there isn't any actual definite evidence, and Chang Ping has retracted his testimony.)
I think the main things the slightly more extended MDZS version has, not present in CQL, is, first, the explicit visual of XY's head, and second, that NMJ's subsequent response isn't a response to JGY's actual speech; JGY was about to speak in reply, and NMJ responds in irritation to what he thinks JGY is going to say—responds, indeed, by calling him 'Meng Yao'.

Mistakenly Saving the Villain - Chapter 3
Original Title: 论救错反派的下场
Genres: Drama, Romance, Xianxia, Yaoi
TW for this chapter: Mentions of slave trafficking
This translation is based on multiple MTLs and my own limited knowledge of Chinese characters. If I have made any egregious mistakes, please let me know.
Chapter 3 - Born Without Tears
The red-dressed beauty lightly opened his vermilion lips and blew into the jade flute. The flute sound was full of lingering affection, softly touching his heart, as if he was inviting all listeners to join the red curtain and share the scenery together.
Song Qingshi's mother was an internationally renowned pianist. Because of her influence, music had become Song Qingshi's only hobby outside of school. In the last days of Song Qingshi's life, he had lost all body functions, but his consciousness was extremely clear.
His mother invested heavily in installing top-notch audio equipment in his room to play music everyday. She also asked top musicians in various fields to give him a small concert every day.
Music rescued him from the brink of despair and soothed his heart. During this special time, Song Qingshi was particularly sensitive to the emotions in music. He could hear the player's tenderness in the passionate piano music, and he could also find hidden encouragement in the sad and solemn guzheng music. . .
Now, he heard the familiar struggle and despair in the lingering and affectionate sound of the flute.
Song Qingshi finally raised his head, staring at the brilliant phoenix in a daze. He could no longer look away.
Jin FeiRen found out that Song Qing finally became interested in one of the beauties, and he was overjoyed: "Song Xianzun is interested in this slave? His name is Yue Wuhuan, naturally charming, a rare wood single-spirit root. That means he's much more resistant when tossing him around in bed. The more you rough him up, the more unhinged he comes. Those who have tried it have never failed to boast about it. Do you want to taste him first?"
Song Qingshi's ears were reddened by his explicit recommendation. He quickly turned his eyes away, and said dumbly: "No need."
"Medicine Master Xianzun is clean and does not engage in those activities. If you don't love these things, don't force him, friend." LingBao Xianzun came over, pointing to Yue Wuhuan and exclaimed, "If I remember, was this the best product sold by Xie Que? This immortal world is still the best place for him to raise beautiful people; one is more tasteful than the last. Alas, I have a friend who is his good friend, and all kinds of better goods will be sold to you first."
Jin FeiRen waved his hand and said, "You flatter me. What he really has a good relationship with are thirty hu of mermaid pearls."
LingBao Xianzun laughed: "If all friendships in the world could be created with money, my friend would be surrounded by the most affectionate people in the world. Come, come, let me have three cups with my friend and celebrate the wind and moon together.
Jin FeiRen also laughed, and ordered the young man in his arms to fill a glass of wine and drink with LingBao Xianzun.
LingBao Xianzun had already drunk a lot. He was slightly drunk. He leaned against the table and listened to the flute. He exclaimed: "I remember that when this beauty first entered this place, he was reluctant to accompany guests, even under the control of Acacia Seal. It was very interesting to see, but now he has become so promiscuous, and his flavour has changed. You have great methods, my friend."
Jin FeiRen shook his head: "It's a pity that this beauty doesn't cry no matter how rough you toss him around. He was born without tears, and because of that, some of his appeal has been lost."
Song Qingshi heard the professional question and couldn't help answering: "Being born without tears may be a problem with the lacrimal secretion system."
Jin Fei was dumbfounded for a moment. He appreciated his friendship with Song Qingshi, but he couldn't keep up with his medical obsession. He had to laugh awkwardly and switch off the topic: "Don't look at this beauty's promiscuity deceive you. In the mortal world, he was also a noble and respectable prince. When he was eight years old, Xie Que found that he had excellent aptitude when he was looking for beauties in the mortal world, so he showed his supernatural powers and presented the emperor with a pill for prolonging life. The old emperor was so happy that he happily gave his son to the immortal leader. Xie Que is also an ingenious person. He will seriously accept mortals with spiritual roots as disciples, and coax them to trust him. Then he uses that trust to trick them to sign the spiritual contract of voluntary slavery. He then teaches them superficial techniques, and, when they appear to be at their peak, brands them with the Acacia Seal. He always gets them when the colour is at the best time for picking, and then sells them to the brothels to serve in their rooms.
Although everyone knew he was taking advantage of those loopholes, they all turned a blind eye and eventually accepted this method of slave trafficking."
The Yanshou Pill can only be taken once to extend someone's life to reach 100 years old.
Cultivators can live at least three hundred years so long as they build a good foundation base. They don't need this tasteless kind of thing at all. Most of them are bought for their mortal servants. The price is very cheap, only worth two low-grade spirit stones. Such huge profits have continued to promote the slave trade.
There is an endless stream of cultivators in the trade, but none of them are well-versed as Xie Que.
Song Qingshi was surprised to find in his memory that the original body had seen Xie Que before.
That spring, the original body was studying a new way to create pills behind closed doors. Xie Que came to seek medical treatment with a comatose child. The child was a mortal, about eleven or twelve years old, with a rare pure yang physique and a wood spiritual root. Moreover, when he reached the third rank, his talents were different, and he was even better than some of the wasted descendants of various immortal families. Xie Que said that it was his new apprentice who had recruited more than three years ago. When he went to the mountains to practice, he was bitten by a Devil Mask Snake. Devil Mask Snakes are not extremely poisonous, but they will turn the faces of the poisoned person different colours, just like they were wearing a mask.
The original body typically didn't treat mortals, but Xie cried out in tears, saying that this was his most important apprentice, and he was willing to pay a high price to save him. The original body was in a good mood at the time, and was annoyed by his repeated crying. The Devil Mask Snake poison was also easy to detoxify. He finally relented and ordered a servant to give him two detoxification pills and ordered Xie Que not to cry again.
Xie Que stayed beside the apprentice’s bed and took care of him for three days. The apprentice woke up from a coma, his body no longer in a serious condition, but it took time for the ghost marks on his face to disappear. They stayed in the valley for half a month, and waited until his apprentice's face fully recovered.
During that time, the peach blossoms in the medicine garden bloomed just right, like red brocade all over the sky. When the original body encounters a problem with his alchemy, he often sits in a high place and looks at the peach blossoms and thinks. Every time, the original body would see a small figure under the peach blossom practicing swordsmanship. He practiced in the morning, at noon, and at night, as if it had become a landscape of symbiosis with the peach blossoms.
Mortals trying to cultivate immortality are like a fish leaping over a dragon's gate. The path comes with many difficulties and dangers, and there are few successful ones.
Xie Que was always by his side, with a worried expression on his face. He was either afraid that he would drop his sword or that he would become exhausted. The two quarreled several times. On a whim, the original's body and mind let out a spiritual thought to investigate. He heard the child say to Xie Que: "Master, although mortals are not as good as immortals, my father taught me to reward my diligence, and diligence can make up for my weaknesses. So I have to work harder and never waste time."
"What you said makes sense," Xie Que tried to persuade him with a bitter face. "Your injury has not healed. I'm afraid you might hurt your body. And. . . why do you have to practice sword? Entertaining cultivation, wouldn’t it be better for you to learn some flute, piano or something?"
"Master taught me to use music to cultivate Taoism is very good," the child scratched his head embarrassedly. "But I like swords, I want to be like Mo Yuan Jianzun. Master, rest assured, I know all the songs you taught me. I practiced better than my senior brothers and sisters, and I definitely don't put off practice."
Xie Que had no choice but to say: "I will find you the right ice silk gloves later. You must wear them when you practice swords. You must soak your hands with lotion at night to make your hands soft. This will prevent calluses, so you won't miss the subsequent practice."
The child cheered, excitedly: "Master, you are so kind."
"Don't get hurt," Xie Que lightly knocked on his forehead and complained. "You naughty devil. Your master is terrified. From now on, stay in the sects when you practice, and you are not allowed to go to the back mountains. Take breaks as well to avoid ruining your eyes."
The child accepted all these conditions.
Xie Que leaned over, rubbed his head gently, and sighed: "You don't know how much Master values you. . ."
"I know." The child raised his head and said in a serious voice: "I know that the immortal world looks down on mortals that cultivate immortality, and even looks down on the master who only accepts mortals as disciples. I don't want to shame my master, so I must cultivate a Golden Core to prove to everyone that Master’s vision is right!"
Xie Que looked at his face silently, his eyes distant and difficult to distinguish.
The child pulled Xie Que's sleeves, turned his eyes, and said embarrassedly: "Wuhuan likes Master the most!"
Xie Que stretched out his fingertips, stroked the child's colorful face, looked carefully, and finally stopped reluctantly on the small red mole under his left eye, which was dazzlingly beautiful. He was silent for a long time, showing a very kind smile: "Master also likes you the most."

The one(s) who never stop searching
I sometimes wonder whether Hanguang Jun grew up with a role model, is there anyone he looks up to, or that just doesn’t exist because LWJ is too busy being admired and respected by pretty much everyone else (apart from his biggest anti-fan Su She).
Of course, he adores his soulmate. BUT, now rewatching the Coffin Town arc, I just really want to write something about LWJ and his admiration for Xiao Xingchen/Song Lan.
Tumblr media
LWJ first met XXC and SL in episode 10 when checking out Chang clan’s manor in Yue Yang with WWX and JC. The duo captured Xue Yang there, and introduced themselves to the gang.
‘Xiao Xingchen, the moon in the breeze. Song Zichen, the Gentry despite the frost. Your decency is known to us’. This was probably the longest sentence LWJ said to another human being since the beginning of the series. Even his eyes scream ‘I’m a fan’ and makes WWX turn around in surprise.
Tumblr media
During their later conversation as NHS and JGY arrive, XXC and SL talk about how they’re not interested in bloodlines and just cherish those with same ambitions. LWJ has obviously been listening very carefully, and even actually asks where they cultivate and how others can find them. I mean, since LWJ has not really opened up by that point, it’s truly impressive coming across new characters that manage to generate so much interest from LWJ within a very short time. Let me repeat. he even ASKS PERSONAL QUESTIONS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His admiration becomes VERY clear just a few minutes after during the farewell scene. It’s probably only the 3rd time LWJ gives us a mellow facial expression since episode 1. He watches on as XXC and SL depart - quite a long look with a mix of emotions: appreciating, pondering, wondering, with a tiny bit of sorrow, somehow. He was clearly in his own world until WWX calls him back down to earth. He then gives his soulmate a soft look before nodding and following the gang. WWX clearly senses that LWJ has something in mind, as they walk, he turns and looks at LWJ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is how I interpret LWJ’s thought process in that sequence. As he looks on XXC and SL leaving, it feels like he has a bunch of ‘What if...’ questions in his head. Probably something along the line of ‘Darn, wouldn’t it be nice to just roam the world with your lifelong confidant, protect the weak, exorcise the evil without the burden of playing clan politics? What if I was not restricted by 3,500 rules at Gusu? What if I could actually live a life as in my name WangJi - to not seek fame or wealth, forget about worldly matters, and be at peace with the world?’. As soon as WWX calls him he turns around and.... ‘What if I could live that life with this person?’.
Tumblr media
I’m convinced from this point, LWJ already has a vision in his head about going on adventures with his soulmate. We know he eventually got his dream come true from episode 34 onward, but it was a very very long and painful way for him to get there. At the end of episode 35, when filling WWX in about what happened to XXC and SL, LWJ was visibly upset which led him into having himself a drink. Some may argue that his frustration is due to people still shitting on WWX after all these years, or about the injustice related to Jin clan and Xue Yang rather than XXC and SL. I still think that being reminded of the duo’s tragic fate when talking to WWX does have some impact on LWJ’s emotion.
Tumblr media
It was a clear case of extreme clan-related injustice that brought so much pain to the lives of 2 people who are not even attached to any sect whatsoever, 2 people who just purely wanted to protect the world from evil while not taking side. They were simply caught up in the whole major clans corruption shamble, and clearly the last people on earth who deserved to die/gone missing because of the clans’ mess. For someone who has long admired their decency, how would that NOT frustrate LWJ - someone who’s already in a long battle against injustice that screwed over his soulmate’s life?
Tumblr media
Fast forward to the end of the Coffin Town arc in episode 39, it’s now revealed that Xue Yang murdered everyone at Snow White Pavilion, turned SL blind and led XXC to give his eyes to SL. As LWJ was searching for WWX, elsewhere, someone else was also looking for their other half. Unfortunately, SL arrived to find XXC being deceived by Xue Yang, and basically all of them ended up with tragic fates. Once all of the misunderstanding is finally clarified, we find WangXian and the junior disciples in front of A Qing’s grave. Once again, WWX notices LWJ being miles away in his own thoughts. He looks up and stares into his soulmate’s beautifully surreal face. It has an odd sense of relief in his vision, mixed with a bit of fear - a ‘close call’ type of fear, like... ‘Something even more awful could have happened’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LWJ then mumbles ‘Fortunately...’ to a confused WWX and probably because of censorship, we never get to hear the end of that sentence. Putting in the context of everything that just happened to them, it’s not too difficult to work out that LWJ was acknowledging how extremely lucky he was being able to reunite with WWX safe and sound. Sadly, XXC and SL did not get that chance.
Tumblr media
They then returned to XXC’s coffin to find SL. LWJ looks on, apologetically, as WWX gives SL what’s left of XXC’s spiritual cognition. Just a quick side note, I cry EVERY SINGLE TIME watching SL write in the soil with this sword ‘Roam this world with Frostwork. Exorcise evil beings alongside Xingchen’.
LWJ then looks up to SL and it feels so strongly that he wanted to say something. He’s been there - he saw his soulmate falling off the cliff. He started to invest most of his time searching for WWX, from appearing whenever chaos was to communicating with spirits asking for WWX’s whereabouts. 16 years of mourning the dead and living with the pain, feeling incomplete and empty without his counterpart.
Tumblr media
LWJ is the only person who can relate to SL. And that’s probably why he knows there’s nothing to be said that could ease the pain. He proceeds to respectfully present SL with XXC’s Frostwork and bow.
Tumblr media
LWJ, with sadness in his eyes,  watches SL walk away, this time without XXC by his side. The scene cuts to WWX thinking to himself ‘I wonder if the two of them would be able to meet each other again’. The same thought must have gone through LWJ’s mind as well. WangXian then exchange a mournful look - if only the camera has stuck around longer for us right here, as I’m sure, this could have been the ‘We should be thankful that we are still standing in front of each other’.
Tumblr media
I really appreciate The Untamed crew setting a good 3-episode arc aside to tell the tragic story of XXC/SL/XY the best way they could. It’s also a good idea to change the timeline of certain event so that XXC and SL cross path with WangXian in WWX’s first life, as it lets us see from very early on that LWJ is not just a rigid guy to follow rules all the time. He doesn’t have all the answers to everything in his life just because he reads all the books at Gusu. He does have certain insecurity and curiosity about a different path, now that there’s someone in his life that make it worth considering. It also provides more context to the unfortunate contrary between the fates of WangXian and SongXiao.
Tumblr media
If you’re also impressed with this arc as much as I am, I would strongly recommend checking out the novel as it tells us a lot more about SongXiao origin story and how their feud with Xue Yang started. Besides the main couple whom all of us obviously stan, this storyline definitely impressed me the most rather than anything else. I really wish one day Song Lan would succeed in nursing Xiao Xingchen’s spiritual recognition back to wholeness and they would meet again.

Day/chapter 2 of Liushen week. Day 1 is here or its all on AO3
How To Catch An Aloof And Untouchable Immortal
Attempt 2 - Water.
“Shizun,” Luo Binghe’s voice was always so surprisingly gentle when he addressed Shen Qingqiu, “we should speak to the fishermen first. If you wish to know anything about a body of water, speak to the people who draw their living from it.”
Shen Qingqiu stood a little to the side as they waited for the innkeeper to return to assign them their rooms for the night.
His elegant green robes were muted in the lamplight of the inn, and his fan wafted lazily in front of his face as he examined the patrons drinking at the various tables.
He turned back to his head disciple with a soft smile in his brown eyes.
Those eyes had never changed in either shape or colour, but Liu Qingge would stake his immortal soul on the fact that they were quite different from those of Shen Jiu from when he had first arrived at the Cang Qiong sect.
“Binghe is always so wise.” Shen Qingqiu praised, causing the heavenly demon prince to preen like a peacock.
It made Liu Qingge’s teeth ache.
Most likely from how tightly they were clamped together.
How could such a thing be? That the son of Tianlang-jun was this harmless white sheep, bleating and nosing gently at his Shizun.
And Shen Qingqiu doted on him like a proud baba.
It was enough to turn anyone’s stomach.
They drew much attention from the patrons; three elaborately-robed cultivators would do that in a small town such as this, where even someone buying a new donkey might be considered the scoop of the year.
The innkeeper returned then, and they were shown to two rooms.
There was a moment of panic that Liu Qingge didn’t miss, in Shen Qingqiu’s gaze, before it vanished, and he folded his fan, “Binghe and this Shizun will share a room, Liu-Shidi.”
He wanted to protest, even though he knew their relationship was purely that of master and disciple, but he didn’t have a reasonable excuse to voice discontent. What could he really say? That he didn’t want them to share a room because the thought annoyed him?
Instead he made a non-committal grunt.
“As Shizun wishes,” Luo Binghe agreed readily, “then this disciple can prepare Shizun’s breakfast tomorrow.”
There was genuine pleasure shining in Shen Qingqiu’s eyes as he agreed. Was the demon brat’s cooking really that good?
He growled a ‘goodnight’ and stomped into the first room they were lead to, slamming the door closed behind him.
Perhaps he had been hasty in asking Yue Qingyuan to send a missive to the demon realm, asking for Shen Qingqiu’s assistance.
In reality he doubted he’d need Shen Qingqiu’s “book learning” to deal with whatever was in the lake – what couldn’t be solved with a sword? - but it had seemed like a good plan to bring Shen Qingqiu out of hiding, and then maybe they could discuss what had happened.
Liu Qingge should have realised he would fetch that annoying brat with him.
*******
Liu Qingge woke before dawn, bathed, dressed and found a deserted meadow outside of the town to practice some sword forms and work through his still-present annoyance by channelling it into aggression.
He felt only marginally better when he re-sheathed his blade, but by the time he walked back to the town the fishermen where there on the docks, preparing their boats for the coming of the light, where they would leave for the day.
Luo Binghe had actually made a good point, and Liu Qingge was talking with some of the men when Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe joined him, looking disgustingly well-rested.
The tales he had heard all differed wildly, and there had even been arguments; some of the men said there was a water dragon, some said it was shuigui, some said it was a jiaoren who lived in the bottom of the lake.
Not quite as useful as they had hoped.
Luo Binghe rented a boat to take them out onto the Lake then, and somehow he and Luo Binghe ended up with the paddles, while Shen Qingqiu sat in the prow, fluttering his fan and looking like some perfect figurehead carved from jade.
Seniority in that man’s hands was a curse.
They paused somewhere near the middle of the lake, after an hour or so of rowing. There was a small, forested island a little distance away, and Liu Qingge picked out some large lizards on the shoreline.
He snorted, “So much for dragons. This is the area the farmers report the most disturbances,” they stowed the paddles and Liu Qingge peered over the side. He was going to have to go into the lake to investigate, there was nothing else for it. He was just about to remove his outer robe when Luo Binghe dived over the side and into the water, setting the boat rocking lightly. He surfaced a little distance away, “Shizun should stay on the boat, let his disciple have a look around. I’ll be back shortly.” He vanished again, as sleek and smooth in the water as an otter.
Liu Qingge wanted to stamp, this was his hunt, and Luo Binghe was taking over everything, making himself look good to his Shizun, and making Liu Qingge look the equivalent of baggage. It had been embarrassing enough requesting Yue Qingyuan to ask for help on his behalf, (which he hadn’t really thought he needed), without this being the outcome.
He looked across at Shen Qingqiu, who sat still, his fan still raised, a look of panic in his eyes, before he moved suddenly to look over the side.
He thought he heard the other mutter, “This child,” into the water.
Liu Qingge wasn’t a stupid man, but it did take a while for realisation to dawn on him. He was alone. With Shen Qingqiu. Finally.
His anger abated, and he leapt on the opportunity, standing to move closer to the other, “Shen Qingqiu-,” there was a sudden shift in the boat beneath him, and it tipped alarmingly. Even though he tried to adjust his balance it was so sharp a movement he was thrown head first into the lake.
He was surprised, and it took him a few seconds to get his bearings before he kicked for the surface. He breached, wiping the streams of water from his eyes until his vision cleared enough to see the look of relief on Shen Qingqiu’s face, before it was quickly gone. “Liu-shidi, are you alright? That was an unexpected wave…”
A wave? On a still lake? He spluttered at the affront of the man. If he was going to lie at least put some effort in and make it convincing.
“Ah, Binghe!” Shen Qingqiu’s voice was of a drowning man who had seen a plank of wood floating by.
“Shizun,” the other acknowledged as he returned to the surface a little away from the boat. There was also a sharp-faced young woman besides him. The scales and fins on her body indicated that the man who had claimed a jiaoren lived at the bottom of the lake had been surprisingly accurate.
“And who is this young woman?”
“She’s from the sea. She was trapped in the lake a decade ago when the river was diverted to create new paddy fields to feed the nearby city that was growing as a trade centre.”
“Can we take her back to her colony? Would you be happy with that?” he addressed his second question to the jiaoren, who nodded, but looked a little confused as to how it might be achieved.
“Excellent. Lets go, Binghe.” Shen Qingqiu stood up, drew his Xiu Ya sword, and leapt lightly onto the blade.
Luo Binghe joined him shortly on Zheng Yang, with the jiaoren in his arms.
“Liu-shidi, please take care returning the boat, and let Zhangmen-shixiong know everything is settled. Goodbye!”
Liu Qingge was apoplectic with rage, but neither Shizun nor disciple spared him a single glance as they flew away on their swords.

02 - Nie Huaisang, Mo Xuanyu and/or Lan Xichen
Why not All THREE?
Nie Huaisang
How I feel about this character: I like him! He’s an interesting character and its fun (and painful) to think about how much he changed or stayed the same over the years. He’s pretty cool to think about headspace-wise.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Jiang Cheng, Mo Xuanyu (canon-compliant or AU!), Lan Xichen, and I read a fic one time where Nie Huaisang growing up had a one-sided puppy love for Lan Wangji that hit me in the feelings. Also Jin Guangyao/Meng Yao in a “hahahahahaha Mind Games” way.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Nie Mingjue!!! Dage!!! Even at the end, they are family!!!
My unpopular opinion about this character: There is an unclear amount of planning/winging it in his quest for revenge. I don’t know the balance of it, but it is deliberately murky and I kind of like that? MXTX kind of makes you try to think about it for yourself, without making it clear. Do you favor Wei Wuxian’s (narrowminded) deductions, with him as the sole mastermind, do you think he just was at the right place at the right time and only tugged a few strings?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Counter to previous though, that we got an extra chapter from his POV. It just would have been so cool to see! I guess we have Fatal Journey but I still need to watch it.
my OTP: I don’t think I have a strong OTP for him! He’s so versatile a character.
my cross over ship: Don’t really have one for him!
a headcanon fact: He has a full menagerie of birds that he keeps in the Unclean Realm. Swans, finches, falcons, as well as mynas that can mimic voices. :3
Mo Xuanyu
How I feel about this character: I LOVVVEEEEEEE THIS CHARACTER. LOVE HIMMMM. (Though caveat I guess I love @mwritesink and mine’s interpretation of his character? Hey shameless self-promotion everyone read Serrated we finished it.)
All the people I ship romantically with this character: I have an Armada: Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Nie Huaisang, Wen Ning, even Jiang Cheng and Xue Yang in certain situations (at least in MDZS :DDDDD)
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jin Ling. I want him to have a good relationship with his nephew. Please.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know if its unpopular, but I guess that he didn’t have romantic feelings for Jin Guangyao? At most I almost see it as a Nanami and Touga from Revolutionary Girl Utena situation (Thinking big brother is the best, that he’s so kind and wonderful, and then the moment where A Line is Crossed the feelings of “Wait, wait reverse this feels bad” makes more sense to me? But again, just my thoughts on it).
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: He could be brought back in some way, but not that Wei Wuxian somehow relinquished the body again back to him. People keep making AUs of that, which you do you, but just runs... counter to everything in the story and makes me “>:I”.
my OTP: Wangxianyu and Xuanjiu. Big time.
my cross over ship: XUANJIUUUUUUUUU (Mo Xuanyu/Shen Jiu from Scum Villain. Maybe in the next few weeks @dornishsphinx and I will show more on Why. :D) Huzzah for Ghost Buddies that can no longer return to their original bodies! (Also a bit of Liu Qingge/Mo Xuanyu. Because its fun.)
a headcanon fact: Excellent memory and work with talismans and less physical aspects of cultivation.
Lan Xichen
How I feel about this character: We share a birthday so I feel a very strange and relatable kinship with his character. Which may affect my reading of him. Because I think he’s used to being put on a pedestal by people, but people not realizing in that he is... Very not capable in terms of “Street Smarts.”  Like I said, relatable!
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Nie Mingjue, Jin Guangyao/Meng Yao, Nie Huaisang, and Wen Ning. Plus one or two OCs.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I want him and Lan Wangji to repair/grow a stronger relationship post-canon. I would like that very much. ;-;
My unpopular opinion about this character: There has been a pervasive fandom thing that he’s a “himbo,” which I view as a bit off the mark. He is very capable: in cultivation, literature, music, and art. Ideal man for diplomacy in most places. And a lot of other things it's only then we get *Playing Wii channel music on the flute.*
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Got to see some of his time with Meng Yao at the brothel while he was on the run... we got an extra in the audio drama and I felt so well-fed but MORE.
my OTP: My heart and mind its Xiyao or Nielan. My mind, heart, and other regions its Lan Xichen/Wen Ning (Chenning? Ningchen?). I am so happy with the dynamic Ink and I made for them as a couple and its the only one I can strangely see Xichen able to not think as heavily about Sect duties or loyalty, since I only see it in present timeline, and I think their personalities mesh well (though gotta say, would be down for past and an arranged pairing of some sort, yes I am very thirsty for them interacting get off my back).
my cross over ship: Yue Qingyuan. (Shen Jiu is Screaming.)
a headcanon fact: He doesn’t feel confident in his singing voice compared to his brother and his uncle. When painting alone likes to hum songs his mother used to sing to him, basically the only thing from her he still has/remembers fully.

Jet ‘s Chang Mo-Kei’s kung fu has been struck by the Jinx Palm, blocking his chi, destroying his ability to perform kung fu and causing him to need constant infusions of chi from Taoist priest Chang San-Fung (Sammo Hung). But Chang can only be cured by a massive infusion of yang energy, which he receives after falling off a cliff and meets a hermit chained to a bolder who teaches him the Great Solar Stance to get back at the hermit’s own enemies. Afterwards, Chang is super-skilled and learns kung fu with the ease of Jet Li. Then things get crazy with everybody flying and chi all over the place, a Mongol princess, the King of Green Bat, all the martial arts schools fighting each other, hundreds of people running around with flags, the not-evil Evil Cult, Hermit Chained to a Boulder Fist. And then, as it gets to the big end fight, it just stops, teasing a sequel that was never made. And I was filled with wonder.
Wong Jing’s Kung Fu Cult Master (1993) is the first time I know that I watched something adapted from a Louis Cha story. It is based on the third novel in Cha’s Condor Trilogy, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. I probably saw it at the old Golden Classics Cinema in Toronto. It was when I was watching all the Jet Li movies. This one was memorable and, having no familiarity with the source material, I found it difficult to follow. That didn’t stop me from pretending later I had been struck by a Jinx Palm. (What do you expect me to do when you give me charcoal powder toothpaste, people?). I was filled with wonder.
Since then I have made sense of what I saw through translated comics adaptations, in particular Ma Wing-Shing’s Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (Comic One, 2002), the novel Kung Fu Cult Master adapts. It seems fitting that I would first read Louis Cha via the comics of Ma Shing-Wing and Tony Wong’s The Legendary Couple (ComicOne, 2002), an adaptation of Cha’s Return of the Condor Heroes. It parallels how I first encountered him in a way that I remember in Kung Fu Cult Master, rather than Chor Yuen’s elegant Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (1978) or Wong Kar-Wai’s deconstruction and sorta prequel, Ashes of Time (Redux or not) (1993; 2008).
Behold this wonder! Gold Lion and Green Bat in Kung Fu Cult Master
Slightly more elegant Green Bat in Chor Yuen’s 1978 Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre
The comics and the 1983 television adaptations allowed me to become familiar with Cha and these stories. They allowed me start to understand stories that assumed familiarity with the story, whether Kung Fu Cult Master, Ashes of Time, or  Jeffrey Lau’s Lunar New Year parody of The Legend of Condor Heroes, The Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993), shot with the same cast and at the same time as Ashes of Time. Please note Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in each film.
As the Blind Swordsmani in Ashes of Time
Suffering from a painful allergic reaction as Duan Zhixing in Eagle Shooting Heroes
In the early 1990s, Louis Cha was what Ip Man movies are now.
I watched some of the 2000s and 2010s tv adaptations in non-subtitled form, but by then I could understand who and what I was seeing. In fact, I was pleased when I could actually get the joke that the landlord and landlady in Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle (2006) were the ill-fated lovers of Return of the Condor Heroes, Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü played by Andy Lau and Idy Chan in the 1983 tv adaptation I borrowed from a good friend and have since gotten for myself.
Andy Lau as Yang Guo and Idy Chan as Xiaolongnu in 1983
Carman Lee as Xiaolongnu, Lois Koo as Yang Guo and giant condor friend in 1995.
Yuen Qiu as Xiaolongnu and Yuen Wah as Yang Guo in Kung Fu Hustle. Ha, I get the joke now! I can laugh!
And it helped a lot watching those shows when I read Tony Wong’s Legendary Couple, because the translations of the names were so different, but I recognized a disreputable Taoist when I saw him.* Sometimes the Wudang Clan is something to mess with.
Cha’s most adapted–and possibly referenced–books are the Condor Trilogy:  Legend of Condor Heroes; Return of the Condor Heroes; and, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. They are sequels, but follow family and kung fu school lines more than the adventures of any one protagonist through three novels. And luckily for us, McLehose Press is planning on translated the whole trilogy into English. The first volume, Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, translanted by Anna Holmwood, is now available. No English speakers will ever need to struggle like I did again. The kung fu fantasy works of Louis Cha will be available to us all–or at least some of them.
Dr. Louis Cha Leung-yung was born in 1924 in Haining, Jiaxing, China and lives in Hong Kong. That’s right, Cha is still going at 94. He has worked as an editor editor and journalist, but it was his wuxia novels, written between 1955 and 1972 under the pseudonym “Jin Yong,” (Kam Yung in Cantonese) that brought him a tremendous success. According to Holmwood, “sales of his books worldwide stand at 300 million, and if bootleg copies are taken into consideration, that figure rises to a staggering one billion.”
Cha got his start as a copy editor in 1947 at Shanghai’s Ta Kung Po newspaper. He became deputy editor of Hong Kong’s Hsin Wan Po. He left journalism briefly to work as as screenwriter for Great Wall Movie Enterprises, Ltd. In 1959, Cha co-founded Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper. And it was primarily Ming Pao that serialized his fifteen wuxia stories. His first was The Romance Of The Book And The Sword (1955). His last was Sword of the Yue Maiden. He retired from writing fiction in 1972 and he’s been updating and revising the work ever since. There was a time in the 1970s when his books were simultaneously banned in both the Mainland–because it was seen as satirizing and criticizing the Chinese government–and in Taiwan–because it was seen as somehow pro-Communist, anti-Kuomintang and critical of Taiwan’s one-party rule.In 1995, he retired from his position as editor-in-chief of Ming Pao. Cha has been active in Hong Kong politics, helping draft the Hong Kong Basic Law and then working on the Preparatory Committee in advance of the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. And he’s spent much of the new millennium pursuing higher education. He studied at St. John’s College in Cambridge, receiving a doctorate in Chinese history in 2010. And the South China Morning Post reports that Cha (might have) received another doctorate, this one in Chinese literature from Peking University in 2013. Of course, this doesn’t even begin to cover his probable knowledge of martial arts like the Nine Yin Manual and 18 Dragon Palm. One assumes Dr. Cha is cultured in all things.
Dr. Louis Cha via the South China Morning Post
Whenever I think of Louis Cha, I think of Tony Leung Chiu-wai in Wong Kar-Wai’s In The Mood For Love (2000). Sure, there is lovely music and melancholy love with the sartorially unstoppable Maggie Cheung, but it is easy to overlook that not only is Tony Leung a writer, he is a writer of wuxia novels. I’m not saying that Wong made a movie about Louis Cha’s love life, which I hope is less depressing, but I think Cha and writers like Gu Long  and Wang Dulu were in the background. Especially after Ashes Of Time. And Ashes of Time is a lot easier to follow if you realize it is a deconstruction of the Condor Trilogy. It relies on the same kind of familiarity that Peter Greenaway relies on people having with The Tempest in watching Prospero’s Books (1991). I love that the touchstones for both extremely artsy-fartsy directors are different. I love that Wong works with a serialized wuxia writer. It would be like Greenaway deconstructing Tolkien or Robert E. Howard**—but all wrapped up together. The high and low brow have a common enemy. God save us from the middle brow.
And Cha is being compared to Tolkien and George R. R. Martin in many of the reviews of A Hero Born. In fact, right on the cover a blurb from the Irish Times reads, “A Chinese Lord of the Rings.” And I get it. It’s short hand. People need some kind of reference before they’ll pick up the book. That’s fine. There will be plenty of time for pedantry later. Once people have read the book and become Cha fans, they can start arguing on the internet, “Hey, Louis Cha is a much more prolific author than Tolkien ever was with a more profound influence on Chinese language literature and readers.”
I would probably make those comparisons myself if my first encounter with Cha’s characters and stories hadn’t been Kung Fu Cult Master. Then again, Kung Fu Cult Master is the first half of a projected two-art adaptation but, like Ralph Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings, there was never a part two. So. Yeah. It’s just that I don’t know what other comparison to make.
In an interview with South China Morning Post, Anna Holmwood describes Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born as “China’s Walter Scott mixed with The Lord of the Rings fantasy things. That’s exactly what it is.” For their part, the SCMP copy editor chose a title comparing the trilogy with George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice And Fire. A Hero Born is wuxia at its best. It’s 1205 CE and the Jin are encroaching on the Song Empire. The emperor is unworthy and the people are oppressed. Itinerant heroes try to make things right. Two of them, Skyfury Guo and Ironheart Yang encounter a grumpy Taoist priest Chu Qiuji*** who, while heroic, is a jerk. He avidly demonstrates why the Wu Tang Clan is nothing to mess with. Guo and Yang become involved in a fight with soldiers and must flee. Their children, Guo Jing and Yang Kang grow up on different sides of the conflict. Plus, there’s Genghis Khan! And a secret beggar sect! And one of my favorite characters keeps his wife’s body in a frozen cave! I wish I could do better, but I’ll just suggest you read the book, read the comics, watch the tv shows and movies.
Oh, yeah, and there’s plenty of fantastic kung fu move and school names and action. Comics, while also working in a static medium, don’t face the same kinds of challenges a novel does in depicting action. Comics creator Ma Wing-Shing in particular captures the force of the martial arts masters moves. I am particularly fond of his chi lines. But Holmwood has some interesting thoughts on translating the names of the various stances, fists and swords as well as conveying the choreography of a fight sans images.
“The name [of these moves] is very evocative and it’s part of the creating of the world, but what really matters to readers is can they follow who is doing what, what the actions are, who is hitting whom, and how they are hitting them,” she said. “When you are translating, you have to read on such a careful and deep level. You are constantly asking yourself: is the hand going there? Is it going up or down? How is this move working? That’s the most challenging part – is to be able to express what the actions are in a way that is going to be vivid on the page and people can clearly understand and follow what’s happening.”
“You can shorten sentences to make the action move, and use some short punchy verbs that make the actions very fast,” she said. “When you want to draw attention to the moment for dramatic effect, you add more details, slow it down, and make the sentence a big longer.”
And I have to say it works. Right from the start of A Hero Born, I easily imagine Chu Qiuji’s unnecessarily brutal fights with the heroes he mistakes for scoundrels. Does it help that I’ve read Ma Wing-Shing, Tony Wong and seen film and television adaptations of Cha’s stories? Maybe. But Holmwood does a good job of taking readers into the martial world. I can’t wait for the next translated volume of Legend of Condor Heroes finally presented if not in its original serial format, something close. McLehose is planning three more volumes of Legend of Condor Heroes before starting on Return of the Condor Heroes–making this a burly “trilogy.”
Ma Wing-Shing demonstrates how to draw punching.
I wrote more about Ma Wing-Shing and his adaptation of Hero here.

The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 10, Part 1 of 2
(spoilers for everything MDZS/Untamed)
[covers MDZS chapters 29, 30 and 48…again, only kinda because things happen differently in the drama...I guess that’s why they call it an adaptation….]
WangXian meter: 🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰+ 🐰+ 🐰🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰+🐰
(Each WangXian scene automatically gets one 🐰 even if they’re just thinking of each other; one scene can earn up to five 🐰 depending on intensity of WangXian-ness. Each scene is separated by an “+”)
When I first watched this scene where Wei Ying was equating himself and Lan Zhan to Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen, I simply thought Wei Ying was just being flirty and adorable and didn’t attribute much significance to it beyond that, but now, after all that’s happened, it’s become so much more meaningful, especially to Lan Zhan, that not only do I love the moment so much more, but it also makes me feel that much sadder for Lan Zhan because of the almost careless way Wei Ying made the association.  Originally I think he did it as a means to gain Lan Zhan’s favor because Wei Ying sincerely wanted to be his friend and break through that cool exterior that Lan Zhan put up all the time. The romantic in me would like to think it’s also because Wei Ying was also starting to crush on him, butat the same time, realistically, I really don’t think Wei Ying in this point in time was even aware of his true feelings yet so while I don’t doubt his sincerity, his intentions were probably more simplistically platonic.  However, in contrast, for Lan Zhan, who was already “falling” for Wei Ying, the idea automatically embedded itself into his mind, so naturally he began to see Song Lan and XXC’s partnership as a goal in life.  Not only did the two cultivators embody their ideal of living without regrets while helping people, but growing up in a highly regulated environment, Lan Zhan probably also envied their freedom to live freely as they wanted.
I really appreciate how Team CQL steadily lays down the bricks early on for the foundation of not only Wei Ying and Lan Zhan’s relationship but also for Lan Zhan’s character development so certain moments can build upon each other over time. This scene is a prime example of that: even though Lan Zhan didn’t react much to Wei Ying’s words at first, later on, as they were bidding farewell to Song Lan and XXC, the wistful expression on his face as he watched them leave followed by the deliberate way he looked at Wei Ying, again with that same expression, was a pretty good indication of just how much of what Wei Ying said earlier actually resonated with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As time went on and he started to question the principles of his own sect and the cultivation world, I can only imagine how much more he longed to live the life that Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen did, with Wei Ying by his side. Therefore, when everything went so horribly wrong for the two cultivators, it’s no surprise that Lan Zhan took it to heart since it no doubt reminded him of happened to him and Wei Ying.
Staring Contest
Tumblr media
I just love all the many little times the two of them make eye contact, especially since, again, we went from Lan Zhan not even wanting to look at Wei Ying to this, where he almost can’t stop himself from looking his way. Again, brick building. Love it.
You’re on your own, bro
Tumblr media
Wei Ying instinctively protecting Lan Zhan from Xue Yang’s poisonous powder wasn’t surprising, but what did surprise me a little was the fact that he completely left poor Jiang Cheng to fend for himself. Didn’t even attempt to reach out to pull him back. If Jiang Cheng was keeping track of all the times Wei Ying was choosing Lan Zhan over him—and he probably was—that would definitely make his list (along with the aforementioned moment since it did sound like Wei Ying was giving up his place in Lotus Pier to go cultivate with Lan Zhan).
SongXiao
Tumblr media
When I first watched this episode, I remember thinking, “wait, they’re a couple too? How many gay couples are there in this show??” Seeing the way Song Lan swept down to protect XXC, how they called each other by their first names and referred to each other as good/close friends, naturally made me wonder if there was more to their relationship than meets the eye.  Of course the official MDZS answer is no, WangXian is the only gay couple in the story, but obviously Team CQL either didn’t get that memo or decided to ignore it so they can ship to their hearts’ content, or supply enough fodder to let us ship to our heart’s content. Whatever the reason, bless them for giving us these precious morsels which were unique to the drama since by the time we met the two of them in the novel, their lives had already gone to hell.
I spend most of my time lamenting the suffering that WangXian had to go through before they were finally able to get their happy ending but truth of the matter is Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen probably suffered much more, especially since their ending was so much worse. Because they are called dao zhangs, I have to assume they live as Daoist priests and therefore have the vow of celibacy imposed on them as well, so whatever feelings they have for each other can only be emotionally consummated through chaste companionship and never through carnal fulfillment of any kind. Basically, unlike Wei Ying and Lan Zhan, everydaying could never be an option for them because of their lifestyle and beliefs. Being of much higher cultivation mindset (or so I assume since they’re much more revered), just being able to enjoy each other’s company was probably more than enough for them, and yet, even that they were denied. It’s like, they’re asking for so little and yet they are deprived of that in the most absolute way possible. So now, seeing the image of them walking away together, only fills me with immense sadness for them—I actually got a little teary-eyed over it tonight—knowing they will never be able to even enjoy something as simple as walking side by side with each other like that ever again.
Tumblr media
Xue Yang
Tumblr media
For how much I feel for SongXiao, again, I really should HATE Xue Yang, but dammit this evil monster is so damn hard to hate. If he was Lucifer in human form, my soul would be totally screwed. Every time I see Xue Yang again I can’t help but like him and want to see even more to him. Wang Haoxuan is very easy on the eyes, so that helps a lot, but it’s not just his looks, it’s also his very effective performance. He just looks like he’s having so much fun and by osmosis Xue Yang becomes fun to watch as well; it’s almost as if his joy at murder and mayhem is infectious. Everything he does works for me, like, I even got delicious excitement chills from just how he appears on the scene at the Yue Yang Chang sect...
Tumblr media
...like some kind of sexy, malicious gargoyle of doom. The only other time I felt the same way is when Wei Ying first appeared as the Yiling Patriarch when he returned from the Burial Mounds. I said before that Xue Yang constantly has this DTF aura about him that makes him shippable with just about anyone and everyone, which makes this moment one of my favorites because I think his sexy evil energy was at maximum output while Wei Ying was feeling him down. It’s almost unfair how alluring he is, like all the time. I know his detractors absolutely don’t feel that way, and honestly, I envy being able to so resolutely dislike him.
Tumblr media
XueXiao
Tumblr media
Considering all the pain and suffering he caused Xiao Xingchen I sometimes think Xue Yang doesn’t deserve to even be shipped with such a pure angel, but the two actors have such good chemistry it’s hard to resist. I mean, when Xue Yang said that to XXC, I seriously couldn’t wait until they met again and I was hoping we would get to see their future interactions (again, this was when I hadn’t read the novel yet and didn’t know what horrifying things were in store). And I felt this way even though I was already fully supporting SongXiao. I seriously don’t want to know what would have happened if Xue Yang had more interactions with Wei Ying; my WangXian-devoted heart is too afraid to even go there.

The MALineage Project Site
The Martial Arts Lineage Project website had attempted to collect lineage history and details of any martial art or person; unfortunately it is not always accessible; it partially appears on its Facebook site.
Martial Arts Lineage Project-1 http://www.malineage.com/styles/Liuhebafaquan http://www.malineage.com/node/16502/edit
Philosophy Submitted by: dr_k_conor
There exists four 'documents', each carrying traits of history and philosophy principles that are generally presented to explain and teach LiuHe BaFa and boxing. The First I will call the 'Cave Codex' alledgedly from found within a Mt. Hua Yo Shan 華嶽山 grotto 洞. Note that the Taoist Canon is divided into three dong 洞, "caves", "grottoes". The Second is usually called the 'Five Word' verses or 'songs' 拳學 五字 歌訣; these are generally refered to as: quan2 xue2, 拳學, boxing knowledge in verse format, wu3 zi4 五字 5-character-word in length, and ge1 jue2 歌訣 'secret' verses of farewell.[this is often mistranslated as 'song']  The 'said' author is given as Li, 'East-wind' 李東風 Li Dong-feng whose name does not appear in any archaic Song Dynasty document. However, some LHBF student place great value in them. The Third 'document' the actual exercise names, for the Nanjing 66-form series of Wu Yi-hui 六十六 起式 easily can be seen as differing and each form naming demonstrates the academic proficiency of Wu as a man of the arts. Some of the 66-lines of 5-characters each also includes Chinese idioms and references to history, art, and music. http://www.silkqin.com http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id11.html
The Fourth 'document' collective are the commentaries written from various teachers to explain via verses; there are either simple two-word idioms, or longer 5 or seven word explanations.
The Six Combinations [also called 'harmonies' as unified concordances], LiuHe 六 合  are as follows: >1. bodys' structure harmonizes with the minds' awareness, >2. minds' awareness harmonizes with innate 'intent', >3. intent harmonizes with the chi (energy-flow), >4. chi harmonize with the 'spirit', >5. spirit harmonizes with 'motion', >6. motion harmonizes with the 'everywhere', [ Note: that there are actually seven factors, Ti, Xin, Yi, Qi, Shen, Tung, Kung. ]
The Eight Methods [also called 'laws' or regulations], BaFa 八法 are as follows: >1. Qi-Fa =Flow: Move the chi and concentrate the spirit >2. Ku-Fa =Bone: Genuine-structural energy when bones are correct >3. Hsing-Fa =Form: Shapes exchange freely, follow a model, pantomime >4. Sui-Fa =Following: Flexible, adaptable, and coordinated in union >5. Ti-Fa =Lifting: Lift the head upward as if suspended from space >6. Huan-Fa =Reversal: The interchange of motions reverses and reciprocates >7. Le-Fa =Limit: Restraint is needed to harness the dynamic forces >8. Fu-Fa =Hidden: The intrinsic force arises from natural obscurity without method. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id11.html http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id55.html
One of the often addended 'Fourth Document' ideas, is not from LiuHe BaFa at all, they are from late 1800's to 1900's codification of bodily anatomy often used in the zhan zhuang 站樁 'standing post' of Yi quan 意 拳  from Wang Xiang-zhai who was 'friendly' and respectful to Wu and also from some teachers of Ba-kua-palming. These are often unnecessary and may also be misleading. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id12.html A more relevant added teaching is from Huang Shou Ting, 黃手庭 of the Shanghai Wu Shu Association, who studied with Song Guang-yu 宋关羽 in Xu Shou; he discusses 8-physical aspects differently : > Qi-Luo: 起 : 落 rising + falling > Dong-Jing: 動 : 靜 moving + stillness > Jin-Tui: 進 : 退 advance + retreat > Kai-He: 開 : 合 open + close > Yin-Yang: 陰 : 陽 in+out, soft+hard > Xu-Shi: 虛 : 实 empty + full > Wa-Qiao: 跃 : 远 jumping + bridging > Liu-He: 六 : 合 internal six-pairs in harmony http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id11.html

Martial Arts Lineage Project-2 http://www.malineage.com/styles/Liuhebafaquan http://www.malineage.com/node/16502/edit
LiuHe BaFa quan Submitted by: dr_k_conor LiuHeBaFa, LiuHe BaFa, Lok Hop Pat Fat, Six-harmony, Eight-methods Boxing Exercise http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id37.html LiuHe BaFa 六合八法 is a collective of martial concepts and boxing exercises. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id21.html LiuHe BaFa 六合八法 is also a collective of verse of concepts, the Six Harmonies 六合, obtainable by an understanding the utilization of Eight Methods 八法; each aspect is derived from archaic Chinese exercises and pugalisms. The LiuHe BaFa boxing is not directly derived from the modern versions of Tai-chi-, Xing-yi-, or Ba-kua-palm boxing. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id11.html The verse name is often abbreviated in non-Chinese as LHBF or LHPF. The core concepts and methods of the LiuHe BaFa are known to be derived from the 1900's manchurian Wu Yi-hui 吴翼翚 (1887-1958) who learned them from three differing teachers; Wu first taught them in Shanghai and later at the Nanjing National College of Martial Arts founded in 1928 and later became the Dean of Studies in 1936 [closed 1948].
Although many exercises and concepts are claimed to be from the real-life Song Dynasty Court Taoist Chen Tuan [ Bo ] 陳摶 , aka Chen Xi-yi 陳希夷 [d. 990] who was associated with the military General whose abilities made him the First Emperor of Song, Tai-zu, there exists no official or other records to support the common claim that the LiuHeBaFa- or its principle 'water' flowing or its' verse principles factually originated from the Court Taoist Chen Bo nor from his said mountain residence at Mt. Hua Yu 山 華嶽 in Shenxi Province. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id9.html
Popular naming has resulted in addending the syles' name to include this mythology: as the Chen Xi-yi Men 'sect' 華嶽希夷門 Hua Yue Xi-yi with LiuHeBaFa Boxing principles becoming: 華嶽 希門 (+) 六合八法拳.
The bonefide utility of the core LHBF verses, is that they are succinct and are applicable to all of other Chinese Internal martial arts. Although form and principle aspects of these internal martial arts [Tai-chi-, Xing-yi-, and Ba-gua-] are evident in the LHBF, there is a popular trend to classifiy the LHBF exercise as a 'fourth' art which it is not; the Chinese Martial Arts Association classifies it as a sub-style of Tai-chi-boxing. Perhaps in keeping with this method of distinction, some teachers have named their styling as a Hua-Yu Tai Chi-boxing exercise. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id58.html
There also now exists absorption of Yi-chuan, 'intuition' boxing fundamentals as set forth by founder Wang Xiang-zhai 王薌齋, (1886-1963), and his students in the LHBF system; this again results in further name changes and ,mixings with the applications of LiuHeBaFa-. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id5.html Wang Xiang-zhai is known to have interacted and cross traded to other system styles while he was a teacher at the Nanking Martial Academy [Shao-lin, tai-chi, xing-yi, etc].
To further complicate understanding, Wu Yi-hui, from his earliest martial studies, learned a shaolin-related boxing called Lu Hong Ba Shih 呂紅八勢 sometimes also called Lu Hong boxing 呂紅拳. A careful study of Wu's 66-form version made during his time in Nanjing, does shows evidence of being embedded. The LHBF core exercises are called zhu zi 築基. http://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id52.html

The Daily Task of Preventing My Disciple from Turning to the Dark Side: Chapter 5
Not waiting for Mu Chen to speak, the female cultivator from the sixth palace suddenly opened her mouth. "This disciple from Xiuyang palace carries Shishu's portrait. Today, those who dare to wrestle Shishu's face, this female of Xiuyang palace will not let them off."
These words were not soft, though the voice of the woman is very pleasant to hear. In this group of old men it's particularly striking and the main hall suddenly became peaceful.
Mu Chen: "..."
What would a female practitioner do with his portrait? Exorcise ghosts?
The man on her left looks honest and, seeing that the old men around are dissatisfied, speaks up. Though he doesn't dare to show his contempt, he kindly reminded her: "Shimei (Younger Martial Sister), you are one of the Palace Lords, remember modesty and restrain yourself a bit."
It sounded right, and carefully thought out because it had another meaning. It was a reminder that she should remember her place and hold back her opinion!
Bai Xunrong's beautiful eyes swept around the hall, throwing back her chest, and sneered: "Modesty? The Cutting Soul Knife doesn't know what restraint means."
This sentence made all of the elders shrink back, not daring to have an opinion any more. Obviously, they all know that Bai is not someone who should be provoked.
Only a few of the main hall's twelve elders have some spunk, the arrogant Bai Xunrong really is not ordinary. On her right side is an empty seat. Was it reserved for Sunshine Palace's Lord?
The sixth is a solemn-faced blue-clothed elder. Noticing that several elders have discontented expressions, he tries to get them to cool off or calm down: "That unstable broken bell, if Mu Chen wants to take it away to please his disciple, give it to him."
The one who spoke is Liu Han of Hanyang Palace, a practitioner who is currently in the middle stage of the Purification period. He and Mu Chen have an amicable relationship, having entered Cloud Gate sect together. Liu Han is the type who will not hesitate to draw his sword to chop people up. The man is a killer but his will is strong so he is not a person who is consumed by his heart demon. His swordsmanship is fierce. Since he called the sect’s treasure a broken bell, the others do not dare to refute his words because of the ice-cold aura emanating from his sword and his threatening manner. No one wants to look for trouble.
An old man quickly stood up, laughed and said: "To give the Soul Bell to Mu Chen, we cannot agree. There should be a condition. If the sect ever needs the bell, it must be handed over."
Mu Chen saw their attitude and was unhappy. If their own masters were to speak, none of them would have dared to question but when it's him they dare treat him this way?[^1] Do they really think of him as someone who cares for nothing but alchemy?
Very good! It seems he has not shown his power so that they all think they can bully him.
A white figure flashed, the old man fell down onto his seat. Mu Chen's face is cold and his lips are curled in a sneer. Compared to the hypocrite, this group of old and pious men really are not hiding their thoughts. When would he ever need anyone from this faction? When he has no brains?
Mu Chen looked disgustedly at the other, saying: "You are not qualified to speak to this elder. Only your teacher has the right."
"You...it was impolite of this disciple." Sitting down, his face red, the elder shut his mouth, not daring to speak another word. Mu Chen really made his teeth itch with anger.
Lesson learnt, now the others in the main hall will have to think twice about speaking up.
A Palace Lord then stood up, cupping his hands to Mu Chen in a courteous salute, and politely asking: "If we cannot make the exchange with elder Mu Chen, what do you plan to do next?"
Mu Chen looked at the other party whose eyes are trying to mask a greedy mind. His tone is light: "I heard that Hunyuan Zong has a qin (musical instrument), the timbre is good."
His words are slow and casual but the meaning is clear. If he cannot exchange the pills for the Soul Bell, then he can also give it to another sect to exchange it for other things. Though he has never done this kind of trade, as long as his heart is comfortable, Mu Chen never cared about rules.
To the dissatisfied elders, this sentence gives them an excuse to counterattack. Speaking in a low voice, the elder that Mu Chen rebuked before said: "This is to betray the sect, is it not?"
The five people in the seats of honor are dismayed. The snoring sound of the person who is asleep in his seat also vanishes. Liu Han's hand fell on his sword hilt. Yue Ming Ze also frowned but it is Mu Chen who moves the fastest.
Long, white sleeves swaying, he places his hand on the other's face. This is ruthless move that means he wants to take the other's life.
Punish one as a warning to others!
He does not dare to contradict Bai Xunrong, but dares to contradict him? Does he think that it's better to bully Mu Chen than a woman?
Mu Chen's phoenix eyes are murderous. Today if his prestige cannot be raised then tomorrow some people will think he can be bullied and his disciples will be despised.
The thought of Gu Yunjue, that child with a sensitive temperament whose life became distorted and turned into a killer, being bullied... Mu Chen could not bear it. This time he will protect the little disciple and never let him be wronged.
Sensing this stream of familiar power fluctuations, the person sitting beside a window innocently swinging his legs turned his face towards the main peak. His eye color as deep as an ink stain, he wondered who the master is fighting. Who is dirtying his master's white hands?
Mu Chen turned suddenly, no one had time react and the other was blasted into the center of the main hall by Mu Chen's spiritual power. Lying there with an embarrassed, bloody face, the elder was completely taken by surprise. He had not expected Mu Chen to dare to lay hands on him.
However, Mu Chen is not finished. His long fingers flashed and, suddenly, numerous white flames appeared. The temperature of the flames was not clear but the space around them seemed to be distorted. The air beside Mu Chen was full of flames. They looked like groups of butterflies and in the blink of an eye had multiplied into thousands. Each one can take the life of the practitioner on the on the floor, burning him away in an instant.
Yue Ming Ze sees that the flames were not stopping. He hurriedly cried out: "Please spare his life!"
Mu Chen snapped his fingers to stop the flames, giving Yue Ming Ze some face.
The people in the audience are shocked at this fantastic scene. The way they now look at Mu Chen has changed. This white flame is a legend! One of the three ancient fires, nine Yang Minghuo! Burned by this flame, even the spirit cannot stay. Mu Chen unexpectedly wields this type of supernatural power. The rumors are true!
And Mu Chen's spiritual power control is almost to the point of metamorphosis, shaping the flames in a lifelike form, and even the word "genius" cannot describe this ability.
How old is he? Only a hundred years old and he has already reached the Purification stage.
Yue Ming Ze's hands, hidden in his sleeves, are trembling. Shishu seems more frightening now. Before, he had never tried to ruthlessly kill people without a word.
With indifferent, pitiless eyes, Mu Chen coldly said: "Those who do not understand how to respect the teacher, stand up."
No one spoke. Mu Chen grunted contemptuously. Sure enough, if he beats one of them up, the rest will become more obedient.
Yue Ming Ze waved his sleeves and in his role as sect master solemnly said: "The soul bell will be exchanged for the two pills. The elder defied a superior, therefore he will be placed in the detention peak for a hundred years. If there is a next time he will be punished mercilessly."
When some people wanted to open their mouth to object to Yue Ming Ze's words, Mu Chen humphed...the sound was chilling, implying a dormant but murderous mood. Those people closed their mouths obediently.
Again Mu Chen thought: I really need to beat up people more!
-----
Mu Chen went with Yue Ming Ze to the sanctuary to take the soul bell then returned to the Sunshine Palace. Gu Yunjue was in his little attic room. Seeing that he has changed his clothes, Mu Chen gave a satisfied nod. The little disciple looks good and the clothes suit him well.
Happy that his master did not bring one of the mud monkeys with him, Gu Yunjue laughed, squinting his eyes merrily.
To Mu Chen his disciple's innocent face and uncalculated laughter were very soothing. He perked up instantly, spirits greatly improved. Lifting up his disciple and throwing him up in the air, Mu Chen was in a playful mood.
Gu Yunjue's eyes opened wide. He was thrown up so high that the three-meter high roof was only an inch from his head! He fell... to be caught by a thin arm, then thrown up again...
The disciple was thrown up in the air seven or eight times. Gu Yunjue couldn't stand it anymore, his tiny body really couldn't cope with this. Quickly, he grabbed Mu Chen's sleeves, saying: "Shizun..."
In Mu Chen's cold face his eyes are exceptionally bright, "Up high."
Jing Ting is envious of Gu Yunjue. He also wants the Palace Lord to throw him up high!
Gu Yunjue: "..."
Having given his disciple an exclusive love reward, Mu Chen's mood is good. Glancing at the room's furnishings, Mu Chen saw that it was like the rest of the Palace. He had never cared about such things, simply using whichever furniture was most convenient, but he remembered that in his past life his disciple liked gorgeous, luxurious things. The Gu Yunjue of the past preferred fancy and expensive food and clothing. He ordered Jing Ting: "Go to the treasure house and pick some furniture. The things here are to be changed."
He felt that he should satisfy the child's fondness for lavish things now. Otherwise, if he had too little during his childhood then when he grew up he would want more and become too greedy.
Jing Ting eyes held complex emotions as he glanced at Gu Yunjue. With a cold expression on his face, he left.
A moment later Gu Yunjue's room held new furniture. All of the items were treasures and gave off the white glow of spiritual power. Gu Yunjue knew that these are some rare spiritual items.
The tables and chairs were of Qingyang wood which was grown from trees in the Demon World's evil valley. It has the function of driving out demons and nourishing the spirit. This kind of material, a small piece of it is worth thousands of Lingshi but his master casually used it to make furniture.
At the window was a black guqin glowing with a blue light, obviously a magical weapon.
Mu Chen asked him gently, "Do you like it?"
Gu Yunjue plucked the strings, strumming a few atonal notes. He smiled gently and cutely proclaimed: "I love it, Shizun is the best.”
Mu Chen felt that words of praise from little children are the best to listen to. He rubbed Gu Yunjue's head then embraced him, throwing him up in the air again.
Gu Yunjue: "..."

Translator’s notes:
[^1]: It seems that most of the elders in the hall are Mu Chen's martial nephews and nieces who are a generation beneath him. Mu Chen is of the generation of their masters. Therefore, the people in hall should not rudely talk back to him since he is their uncle. Mu Chen feels that their teachers, who are of the same generation as Mu Chen, are the only ones who can talk to him as equals.
By the way, the main hall assembly that ended in a face-slapping session was very hard to translate since everyone seems to be speaking in third person. I wasn’t even sure sometimes if they were talking about themselves or someone else.
For example, from the tone of the conversation and the context, I’m pretty sure that Bai Xunrong said that she has Mu Chen’s portrait but the literal translation of what she said is “The disciple from Xiuyang Palace...” Theoretically she could have meant that someone else, but it’s probably Bai herself, right?
When Mu Chen said “Those who do not understand how to respect the teacher,...” I think he meant himself as “the teacher.” He was talking in third person.
Comments:
I’m still laughing at the “exclusive love reward” hahahahaha!
I’m not confident about the translations for Liu and Bai’s parts since it has a lot of weird syntax and esoteric terms. They are both badass, that’s what I understood. I should be able to translate better once I have more chapters under my belt.
Please leave a message below if you have a comment or correction. I don’t have an editor yet. Thank you for reading.

How To Catch An Aloof And Untouchable Immortal
Attempt 3 - Tea
Yang Yixuan found him that afternoon. He was carrying an armful of correspondence Liu Qingge had been tying to evade for a good while. It was a game they often played, because Liu Qingge didn’t like paperwork, and if he managed to avoid it for long enough Yang Yixuan would have to deal with it, or risk missing important deadlines.
His head disciple virtually slapped the pile into Liu Qingge’s chest, (remind him why he put up with this again?), and he was about to respond with his usual, waspish retorts, when Yang Yixuan lifted his chin.
“If you shout at me, I’m not going to tell you the news.” His head disciple was brash, loud, and had a quick temper. Much like Liu Qingge. It was annoying.
“Who says I want to hear your news?” Liu Qingge demanded. Honestly, where was the respect? Why did he end up with the argumentative little brat? He hadn’t even wanted a head disciple.
“Understood, I’ll not tell you about Shen-shibo then.” Yang Yixuan spun on his heel and was about to march off, except Liu Qingge had dropped everything to the ground and caught him by the arm.
“What about Shen Qingqiu?”
Yang Yixuan was about to point out he hadn’t been interested a few moments ago, but something in his Shifu’s face warned him against it, and he actually paid attention to it this time.
“I met Ning-shijie on her way back to Qing Jing Peak at midday, Shen-shibo has returned from the demon realm and-,” he didn’t get to finish, as Liu Qingge was already striding away from him and towards the Rainbow Bridge.
***
He made his way over to Qing Jing Peak without pausing.
He had had weeks to dwell on what had happened between them. And he needed answers. There was a part of Liu Qingge that couldn’t believe he had allowed it to happen, and another part that couldn’t believe Shen Qingqiu had.
Without doubt their relationship had started off as frigid, all those years ago, when Shen Jiu had first joined the Cang Qiong sect. Years of undisguised mutual disgust had changed when Shen Qingqiu, now peak lord of Qing Jing Peak, and second only to Yue Qingyuan in seniority, had unexpectedly, and completely against his character until that point, saved Liu Qingge’s life.
Liu Qingge had lost control of his cultivation, and almost lost his life as he suffered a qi deviation. Actually, he had almost killed Shen Qingqiu, but the other had helped him.
If asked before how likely Shen Qingqiu would have been to offer aid to him in that situation, and not just cut him down dead, he would have said not at all. But the other had.
And something like a tentative friendship had developed between them. Except Liu Qingge had trouble expressing such a sentiment, and so had shown his friendship in other ways, fighting for him, always collecting his lost fans, healing him of the poison without cure when it flared up and blocked his qi circulation.
That it could be something more…it wasn’t possible. Liu Qingge, while he did have more tender feelings for Shen Qingqiu, wasn’t capable of something as flighty as love. He was the War God of Bai Zhan Peak.
But they had had sex together. He had been hazy on the details that first morning, but with Shen Qingqiu absconding to the demon realm in the wake of their intimacy, he had had plenty of time to think on it. And he did have some memory of the night after the first foggy clouds had lifted.
It had been awkward and embarrassing, or it would have been if they both hadn’t been under the effects of alcohol. He had been a virgin, and he was entirely convinced the same was true for Shen Qingqiu.
They had begun with clumsy, messy kisses, which had continued for quite some time, becoming less so as they had grown used to the glide of each other’s mouths, the shy brush of tongues, the hot panting breaths.
Oil had been procured from somewhere, and they had argued back and forth over who should put what, where. Despite neither initially willing to be the giving party, due to lack of experience and an unwillingness to hurt the other, eventually Shen Qingqiu, full of alcohol-fuelled bravado, and snatched the vial, with a muttered, “Give that here, Liu Qingge, my sister read enough danmei that I know what I’m looking for.” he had slipped from the formal intonations of Shen Qingqiu, and besides had used words that meant absolutely nothing to Liu Qingge. What was more confusing had been the fact that he was entirely sure Yue Qingyuan and Shen Jiu had known each other as children, and neither had ever mentioned a sister of Shen Qingqiu’s. And what was danmei? He understood the characters, of course, but not what they were as a concept.
It had definitely been awkward, unskilled, but they had fumbled and experimented and stumbled their way to something that had been, if not soul-altering, then at least mutually satisfying.
And instead of facing the aftermath, the morning after, Shen Qingqiu had run away to the demon realm.
Liu Qingge stopped in his march suddenly. He had made it to Shen Qingqiu’s little bamboo hut without realising.
He didn’t actually know what he was going to say, now he had cornered the other in his lair, with nowhere to run to.
But he wouldn’t let that stop him.
He strode inside, full of purpose, and intent.
“Shen Qingqiu!”
The slender, elegant figure of the master of Qing Jing Peak was seated at the table, behind a tea service. In fact he was just placing a cup in front of Yue Qingyuan.
They both stared at him having made his dramatic entrance.
He felt his face flush.
“Liu-shidi, perhaps you would like to join Zhangmen-shixiong and this humble one in a drink.”
Shen Qingqiu seemed serene, knowing Liu Qingge could broach no such intensely private subject in front of their sect leader.
He strode in and dropped himself into the seat across from Shen Qingqiu, attempting to regain the tattered shreds of his composure.
“Thank you,” he said briefly, and accepted the drink Shen Qingqiu placed in front of him.
He would just wait. Yue Qingyuan would have to return to deal with sect business before too long, a busy sect leader could only spend so long in polite visiting.
So he settled down to wait.
But he hadn’t counted on Shen Qingqiu’s fan club.
Just as Yue Qingyuan was rising to take his leave, Qi Qingqi, Peak Lord of the Xian Zhu Peak arrived, with her head disciple, Liu Mingyan, in attendance.
More tea was brought in by Ning Yingying, and he sat through Qi Qingqi berating Shen Qingqiu for his absence like a strict, yet secretly fond, older sister, while Liu Mingyan, that traitor of his blood, dared to question Shen Qingqiu about how he and ‘Luo-shixiong’ had spent their time.
As Qi Qingqi made to leave, Mu Qingfang arrived, both to pay a social call, and collect some rare fungi with several medicinal uses, which Shen Qingqiu had brought him from the demon realm. More tea was served.
Shang Qinghua, once disgraced lord of An Ding Peak, was of course next, demanding all news from the demon realm, but secretly wanting only information on Mobei-jun. Liu Qingge sneered into his...how many cups of tea had this been again?
How could one person drink so much tea?
It grew late, and Ming Fan came to enquire as to whether Shen Qingqiu and his guests would require dinner. and Shang Qinghua took that as a cue to leave.
Finally. It looked liked after an afternoon spent doing nothing but sitting and drinking tea he would finally have a chance to speak to Shen Qingqiu on his own.
There was a sudden booming voice from the doorway, “Shen-shixiong, drink with me tonight.” It was the Peak Lord of Zui Xian Peak, followed by his disciples, bearing several jars of alcohol, and a bemused Shang Qinghua, who had been waylaid on the Rainbow Bridge and convinced to return to Qing Jing Peak to join the party.
Though sturdy, the cup in Liu Qingge’s hand smashed into a thousand pieces, under the immense pressure of his grip.
