During a rewatch of Buffy over the summer, it hit me that 2x01 is such an interesting take on PTSD. Throughout the episode, Buffy ticks so many symptom boxes.

Involuntary Flashbacks & Hypervigilance

Difficulty Trusting Others

Self Destructive Behavior

(I mean that, within the context of the show, Buffy dancing with Xander when she didn’t have stronger feelings for him sabotaged her friendships with Willow and Xander, as well as her romantic relationship with Angel - not that dancing with a person is in itself a destructive behavior, just to clarify)

Irritability

(When Cordelia calls you out on being unpleasant, you know it’s bad.)

The episode did a pretty good job challenging the social norms and stigmas around mental health that were still prevalent in the 90s. When Willow and Xander suggest her recent attitude change is the result of possession, a nice throw back to ancient times when mental health was understood to be caused by the supernatural.

It’s a conscious choice to have Giles, the show’s resident supernatural expert, be the one to suggest a more scientific reason for Buffy’s behavior.

Showing Giles, Willow, Xander and Angel watch as she wails away at the source of her trauma adds another layer of reality to the recovery process. So many family and friends of trauma survivors can feel helpless as they watch their person wrestled with their “inner demons.”

The end, however, is bittersweet for me. It’s the one place where I feel the show really reproduces and perpetuates the 90s mental health sensibilities. I love the last scene between Buffy, Willow, and Xander, where the latter two welcome back their friend.

That visual of Buffy’s support system still making space for her, saying “we’re here when you’re ready” is a powerful one. But it’s marred by the fact that the show ultimately never revisits this particular trauma nor does Buffy ever seek help from a mental health professional. Throughout the run of Buffy, there are a few occasions where therapists make an appearance. But after her first experience with actually dying, Buffy and company just continue on as though her mental health just “fixed” itself with one good crying jag.

Given the popularity of the show at the time, I have to ask how much societal good it could have done to have depicted its heroine getting treatment for her mental health. With the reach of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the time, I think it could have made a serious dent in the stigmas surrounding not just those suffering from mental illnesses but the treatments for the illnesses themselves.

drew parker vs ryuji ito ikkitousen deathmatch survivor 2021 finals!

the thing is, there are a few matches that involve blading in a more conventional sense that might have had flashier blood spots. kenny during fd2 looked like he got dunked in red goop at one point, but that still felt more... controlled? drew busts his upper back open in this match and starts gushing so bad they have to tape him up multiple times. which does not work because there's so much blood the tape doesn't stick to his skin. it's incredible

though i got recommended an abdullah kobayashi vs shuji ishikawa match recently, so this answer might change when i watch that... expecting lots of blood

ushigoroshi (goto). when i learned that it's just part of cole's regular move set i got so unreasonably mad. i don't even dislike cole but... not for you. yoh can keep doing it though

Let this sink in: There are more people enslaved today than at any other point in human history, including when the Trans-Atlantic slave trade was legal. The summer’s top film Sound of Freedom has succeeded in not only becoming a surprise box office hit but also in bringing the reality of modern slavery back into the spotlight.

The International Labor Organization estimates 40.3 million men, women, and children are subjected to human trafficking per year. The true figure is likely far higher.

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or a commercial sex act. The US Department of Health and Human Services says human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world, generating an estimated $150 billion in profits annually—that’s the entire net worth of McDonald’s.

But are children really trafficked that often? According to UNODC’s 2020 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, compiled using official figures from 148 countries, one in three trafficking victims detected is a child. In a survey of 260 survivors of domestic minor sex trafficking, one in six were trafficked under age 12.

Though the Trans-Atlantic slave trade has long since passed, the remnants of this tragedy are regularly brought to the forefront of conversation. Yet somehow, many Americans live in either blissful or willful unawareness of modern slavery, and its vast number of victims. The untrained eye can easily miss the signs of it happening all around us, and it’s easier to go about our comfortable lives if we don’t have to wrestle with this weighty reality.

Thankfully, Sound of Freedom has brought this injustice back into the public forum, where it belongs.

Angel Studios, makers of the hit series The Chosen, released Sound of Freedom on July 4 to 2,600 theaters nationwide. So far, the film has raked in over $100 million at the box office, surpassing Disney’s Indiana Jones which was released the same day. The film is inspired by the true story of Tim Ballard, a Homeland Security Investigations officer whose career in locking up pedophiles compels him to rescue children exploited for sex and child sexual abuse material (CSAM, or child porn). It highlights the trafficking networks that prey on vulnerable children and the role American sex buyers play in fueling it worldwide.

Despite the fact that fighting child trafficking is a cause people of all ideological backgrounds should be able to get behind, this film has sparked quite a controversy.

Some critics have gone to lengths to associate the film with conspiracy theories and “right-wing extremism,” primarily using guilt-by-association arguments. Their implied message is “child trafficking isn’t a big problem” and it’s blatantly irresponsible.

Others celebrate the film’s message but lament that it promotes the search and rescue style method of fighting trafficking when, in reality, most anti-trafficking work doesn’t look like this in practice, particularly in the US. Most trafficking doesn’t involve being kidnapped by a stranger, rather victims are often exploited by family members or someone close to them. These kinds of concerns are valid, especially for anti-trafficking organizations, and trafficking survivors, who need to re-educate new volunteers that think they’ll be kicking down doors. Still, it doesn’t negate the fact that this film has sparked a fresh surge of people who are asking “How can I help end modern slavery?”

That is the all-important question.

First, we must cut off the demand. Sex trafficking would end today if men stopped buying sex. The desire to purchase another human for sex is, in large part, one natural byproduct of porn use.

Anti-trafficking and filmmaking nonprofit Exodus Cry interviewed scores of sex buyers, and every single one shared that they began consuming porn in childhood. The effect of porn use on shaping sexual appetites is alarming and well-documented. In Exodus Cry’s documentary Raised on Porn, one convicted consumer of child sexual abuse material shares the escalating nature of porn addiction, “After a while, the stuff that worked before doesn’t work as well… I found illegal pornography, child porn… I got the rush. It worked like nothing else did anymore.”

As shown in Sound of Freedom, as well as Exodus Cry’s documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls, American men are among the most frequent child sex buyers, often flying to countries where they have unfettered access to trafficked children.

Our nation is one of the top countries for sex trafficking and the top consumer of CSAM. We cannot fight slavery while actively participating in it.

Second, we must demolish the “sex work is work” narrative. Prostitution and trafficking are often intertwined. In prostitution, women and children exist to fulfill the sexual desires of men. Buyers often view them as less than human, a product to be bought and discarded. Unlike what sex work advocates want you to believe, prostitution isn’t sexual liberation, it’s sexual slavery.

Most women in prostitution (approx. 90%) are under pimp control, meaning they are likely not receiving the money earned, and fear of their pimp keeps them trapped in a life of exploitation. Eighty-nine percent of those in prostitution surveyed across nine countries wanted to escape it. Prostitution isn’t empowering, it’s usually exploitative and it’s often trafficking.

Third, we must urge legislators to pass laws that criminalize sex buying, pimping, and brothel-keeping while decriminalizing those in prostitution and providing them with resources to find a life outside of exploitation. This legislative model, called the Nordic or Abolitionist Model, is the only law with a proven track record to uproot trafficking.

Without fail, every country that legalizes “sex work” sees higher rates of sex trafficking than countries that have made sex buying illegal. This drives more men to consume women and children for sex. Traffickers and pimps capitalize on that demand.

There’s so much we can do to fight today’s iteration of slavery, and films like Sound of Freedom can help audiences realize that the injustice they see on the big screen can be cut off by starting with the small screen.

Demons hate bells, because they are instantly reminded that beautiful and holy things are of God, which they despise. As Catholics, we ring bells a lot. Coming and leaving of Mass, the start of Mass in the Maronite Catholic Mass, the bell to alert the layperson of the time of Transubstantiation of the Eucharist and wine, bells during hymns, and now even exorcisms. Also that fun little saying of every time a bell rings and angel gets his wings!- haha! I can’t control what demons hate, but I can control a bell. To flood all of our senses with holy senses is truly beautiful, holy, sacred. I would love a little bell again because in fact I had two not very long ago. I will buy the prettiest little bell and have Father bless it. Oh how awesome is my God and how great the spiritual battle is! Each night I wrestle with the devil because he is furious at me.

Episode 62: 4.02 Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester

Aah, and episode where Dean doesn’t get any pie, but instead is handed an existential crisis! After wrestling with issues about his belief in angels and then God, he comes to the conclusion that if God is real, then he has to be a jerk, because why would he let all this awful stuff happen to people? And that is a very valid question.

Cas talks him through it in a way that provides zero comfort, and pretty much only makes things worse by confirming that the devil is also real and trying to escape. Also, the angels are gonna be relatively useless to Dean in trying to stop the devil from escaping... >.>

Meanwhile, they’re confronted by literal ghosts from their past driven to torment and kill them in revenge. So, the fun never stops.

EVANGELINE JUDIAH BENNETT & EDELINE JOHANA BENNETT ━━━ ANGEL & EDEN ━━━ are the children of gwendolyn bennett, maiden name MOORE, a waitress, and marshall bennett, a schoolteacher. the two frequented the same church and bonded through shared ideals and mindsets, notably getting married a lot sooner than they should have before settling down to have kids.

angel & eden were born on march 30th, 1970, with eden being born first and angel ten minutes following. their childhood was founded off of competition where eden excelled at the things that angel did not; quickly learning he could gain favor & approval from their parents and avoid getting paddled or beat if he were better than his brother, eden often went above & beyond to get angel in trouble rather than himself.

eden shined in highschool while angel skipped to party, coping with his neglectful & abusive home life with sex & drugs. despite his success in ballet as well as gymnastics when he was younger, angel was passed in superiority by his brother, who ran track and wrestled in his highschool career. missing out on school did not help his case and as his home punishments became increasingly severe, his moods & self - destructive behaviors grew extremely erratic.

comes the day where gwendolyn & marshall take him away from their home and into the church ━━━ subsequently falling upon angel to not only continue taking care of himself, but also grieve their deaths by their own hands. the preacher became family, unwilling to angel, and he spent the next four years in the church, while eden graduated highschool & began college. such is the way of life for someone so unlucky; a favored sibling becoming successful, while you are left to your own devices like a pathetic stray dog with gnashing teeth.

* it is noted by pennsylvania state police upon the case opened on the lamb’s slashings, that the bennett twins were actually triplets, with angel and [UNKNOWN] being identical, while eden was the fraternal. the church kept files of each child as a way to track, while gwendolyn & marshall had burned each and every trace of their third child, though half - burned files were recovered in the remnants of the chapel: noting out of the two put into the program, angel was the only survivor of the torture / trials.

I'm a big fan of the "rip off some song lyrics" method. I should go through and count sometime how many of my fics got their names from Mountain Goats songs

Ooh, there's a fic I had started writing after season 2 episode 7 of Our Flag Means Death, and then never finished because episode 8 both contradicted it and gave me a bunch more to write about instead! I've been toying with the idea of adapting some of the ideas from it into some kind of canon divergent fic at some point, but I think it's going to end up pretty different from the original concept. But here's how it once started!

Once most of the fires had sizzled down to pillars of black smoke wafting through the night sky, Stede found himself wandering along the shore, bare feet instinctively avoiding the rocks and other hazards on the familiar path to his old favourite spot on the beach. But he wasn't alone there this time—a hunched figure in black had made it there before him and stolen the best seat. "Is this where you've been while the rest of us have been pulling survivors out of the burning wreckage?" Stede demanded. "I've only got the one leg," Izzy Hands spat back, "and the other one's flammable." "Alright, fair enough." Stede sighed as he sunk down into the sand. "Seems like most of us got out of it with only minor injuries, at least. Well, except for Steak Knife." "May flights of angels sing him to his rest."

SEGMENT ONE (SIX MINUTES):

- The broadcast this week opened with a series of comments from wrestlers appearing at the Thanksgiving Tussle discussing what they are thankful for. Jetta is thankful to be back in America with a chance to finally hold the SHIMMER Tag Team Championship. Shaw Mason is thankful that he will have his chance to expose Tim Bosby as the cheater he is. Tim Bosby is thankful that Shaw Mason is back, and hopes, regardless of the outcome, that Shaw will accept the results of their match tonight. The TrustBusters are thankful that they are rich, and you're not. Kylie Paige and Hyan said that Thanksgiving is a time to spend with your loved ones, and they are thankful that they've found friends that they can depend on. Athena asked her minions what they are thankful for. Raychell Rose is thankful for her tag team with Queen Aminata and the wisdom Athena showed bringing them together. Queen Aminata is thankful for her tag team with Raychell Rose and the wisdom Athena has shown by allowing them to enter the SHIMMER Tag Team Championship tournament. Billie Starkz is thankful for Athena taking her under her wing and teaching her what it takes to be successful as a pro-wrestler. Athena is thankful for the unconditional, but well deserved, devotion of her Minions. Janai Kai is thankful that she is a member of DIAMOND EGOIST. Kerry Morton is thankful that his five best friends just happen to be five of the best young wrestlers in the world today. Flamita is thankful that Black Generation International has come to America to paint the country black.

Oh wow.

The gammit of emotions...

First, I abhor government.

I am a Constitutionalist. It was based on part time, representatives, no income, 2 year terms.

Second, government is not God.

Made by fallible men who don't learn lessons. As we are following right off the same cliffs the Greeks & Romans ran off of!

Third, I am a date rape, lost virginity to, survivor.

I do not agree with abortion. At all. I am not God.

[Ok. 1 exception. Ectopic pregnancy. But that is surgery & life threatening. Not sure I'd even count that. That would be a discussion to have though.]

[While I waited to know the outcome of my health.. I made the decision. That if God gave a child, I would at the minimum do an open adoption. To give said child a chance at life & a family that was ready to love them fully. I was in a very bad, vulnerable, alone even with family place. I was forced by my mom to not pursue prosecuting. ]

So no. Someone wanting to abort a baby because they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar... no. This is 2023. There are plenty of contraception options on the market without that murderous method.

And don't even go there with sex.

You did the deed.

Then be the adult who did said deed.

Why I do not agree with someone younger than ~18~21yo having sex. Not mature enough to handle the consequences of it.

And before someone gets all trippy...

I am extremely sensual & sapio sexual.

But I have lived a mostly celibate life.

Not by choice either!

No, I deplore casual behavior & sex.

It is not me.

Yes I jokingly call myself a warrior nun.

Long before the Netflix [2 season] series came out.

But I will continue in said vain until God puts me before my soul's mates.....

Remember, my favorite movie was Space Camp. And my 6th grade teacher was almost on Challenger. I loved that movie. But it came about in a dark time for the world, this country.

I have talked with God about this my loves... about waiting, patience, listening, watching my steps. Ad nauseam.

If I am to be His Warrior queen & wait until I have fulfilled my duties as such to Him beyond the Rapture... then that is what He means for me to do.

I do not however believe that He wants us to wait that long.

He is showing glimpses.. lil by lil.. to keep us together & focused.

It's only cruel in that the adversary tricks are making the trials of Job unnecessarily protracted for us because enjoys torturing souls. Especially the strong for God.

There are times that I believe that I am going to faint standing in front of you . . . . .

Others...that I will run & jump on you . . . . .

Still others.. that I will open my door... & quirk my eyebrows.. tapping my toes.. & say.. "well, it's about time. What took so long. Now are ya gonna kiss me or not?"🎶

Then there's the times I wanna scream at you & have a wrestling/grappling match because I'm so pissed at you . . . . .

Yeah.. sometimes.. Tijgeress wanna kick your asses!!!!!
