So. Fictional Romantic vs Platonic relationships.
I was not gonna post bc it had been a while since seeing Discours(TM) on the topic but then another post reminded me of it (like it wasn't a discourse post but it sparked the Memory) and I was about to put a long-ass string of tags and went. nah. I'll just do this.
For The Record this is not a bash against any interpretation. Wish I didn't have to state but this is Tumblr lmao.
Anyway most of the time I do see actual Discours(TM) on the topic has like, the people who want more platonic relationships be annoyed that fandom very very often goes for romance and say they feel unwelcome or at least un-represented in fandom, to which the ones who prefer romance say that no, there's Friendship everywhere, just look at all the buddy cop plots etc., you have enough.
Not to go "both sides" here but - Both are right.
Especially with two men, which is a lot of fandom main ships, there are a ton of stories that feature a Close Male Friendship. Greg House and Wilson from House MD, Riku and Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Dean and Cas from Supernatural, all four guys from Final Fantasy XV, the list goes on. "Two Boys/Men Who Are Best Friends" is a very, very common group of main characters.
In canon.
Because as soon as you leave canon and check out canon, well... At a quick glance at AO3 stats, there's about four to nine times as much ship content than platonic content (3,400 vs 600; 4,000 vs 950; 115,000 vs 12,500; 5800 vs 970 [Only checking Prompto x Noctis because I'm not gonna check all permutations of this and they're the most popular ship]).
Yes, canon is severely lacking in queer ships most of the time, while friendship is often a big focus. And also, fandom is somewhat lacking in platonic stories while ships are often a big focus.
So, yeah, it can be frustrating to join a fandom where you love a canon friendship and just get "Oh the way they're looking at each other here, they're so in love! Oh I bet they kissed after that scene! Oh I'm sure they'll marry after canon!". It is, of course, also frustrating how rarely we get to see any queer kisses on TV (or books etc pp). One side's not getting what they want out of fandom (which is so often hailed as The Great Spot To Be), the other's not getting what they want out of canon.
Both sucks, in different ways. Stop bashing each other's heads in, uplift stories that have canon queer romance and stop being jerks about people who'd like more platonic stuff in fandom.

after the events of season 4, steve just wanting SO BADLY to be friends with eddie. just LOVING the idea of them getting closer and having eddie as a friend because hell yeah! a close male friendship with someone that is actually my age, and who i don’t have a weird history with involving bruised eyes and love triangles? count me IN! and eddie is FUN, he is actually hilarious! the way they share the same glances of understanding when dustin is being an absolute shit head, rambling on and on about some obscure topic, expecting everyone to always be on the exact same page as him. of course. and, although steve suspects that eddie actually probably is keeping up with everything dustin says, much better than he ever could, he knows that above it all eddie can appreciate the antics for what they are, and roll his eyes with steve at dustin, i concur, you dustin henderson, are a total butthead.
steve just about junps RIGHT IN to being friends with eddie. hey man, what’cha up to tonight? wanna watch a movie? get drunk, smoke a bit? hey eddie, how have you been, man? he starts calling eddie up on the phone regularly just to check in, shoot the shit, he loves it! he loves having this new friendship with eddie munson and he loves how much the other boy has surprised him with how much he actually enjoys being around him. he’s not a freak, really, well ok maybe he is a little bit, but only in the best ways. he’s kind, thoughtful, and is always looking out for the people he cares about, which is something steve can really respect in a dude. but he’s also so funny? steve never could’ve anticipated just how much eddie has managed to make him genuinely LAUGH over their short amount of time spent together. and he’s really, out there? with the way he presents himself, the way he takes up space with these big THEATRICAL movements, leaving no room for regret or shame or god forbid embarrassment. steve isn’t even sure munson is capable of feeling it at all.
eddie munson is a good dude, and steve could use a bit more of that kind of person around him. he loves all of his friends, the weird little bonded family he’s found himself apart of, and they are all good people, but it never hurts to have afew more added in here and there. it never hurts to know there are more good people out there to find.
so steve is all over eddie, it seems.
at least, from where eddie is standing. nobody else seems as phased as eddie does at this sudden change in steve’s demeanour, in his interest in what eddie munson spends his time doing these days. it seems like, to everyone else, to steve, it’s just a natural progression in their relationship, after being sort of role model figures to the same group of kids, both being the two single dudes, who fought the same monsters together last spring, it seems nobody questions too much that they’d start casually hanging around eachother more. especially since eddie has found himself to fit into his own special spot as one of the group now after it all, after he unwillingly became tangled in this whole upsidedown-superpowers-supernatural-monsters and demons debacle, and tangled quite dramatically at that, the rest of the group that’s been with this since the beginning seemed to find no trouble in taking him in and seeing him as “one of them” now.
so, steve asking eddie to smoke, to watch movies, to go for a drive with no real end destination, it’s not really something that earns them too many double takes. dustin makes a comment or two in the beginning, because steve since when did you like hanging out with eddie? you guys are like so opposite, you don’t like any of the same stuff he does? and steve barely gives a shrug and a dismissive yeah yeah whatever man in response, with a signature eye roll, and dustin had said it seemingly also not too seriously, poking fun at steve wherever he can, not really meaning anything by it, as he fidgets around and rambles in the backseat of steve’s car, eddie riding up front. after that, though, he’s dropped it. it’s never brought up again. part of eddie thinks, too, that dustin would actually be enjoying that his two older friends are becoming friends themselves.
robin seems to be the only other person to look a bit harder at their situation, lingering stares at their interactions, all squinted eyes and eyebrows raised, though from her all this seems to be almost always and only ever directed at steve. eddie’s not sure what to make of that. isn’t he the weird one? i mean, he’s the one that stands out, right? he’s the odd denominator that makes their friendship strange. why would steve harrington want to hang out with Him? HIM? but robin doesn’t spend her time studying eddie to try and search for what about him could possibly have piqued the interest of cherished steven harrington, no, shes always looking at steve. like she’s seeing him differently, almost. eddie doesn’t even think that steve notices it, either, because he doesn’t seem to be questioning or doubting anything odd or strange or out of the ordinary with their newfound time spent together. and maybe, maybe robin is seeing him differently. eddie knows he definitely has been. seeing him more, intensely. deeply. human. seeing the person that steve is, as just steve, not this idealised version of a boy that eddies starting to question ever really even existed at all, or if everyone around him just needed to believe that he did, and who was steve if not happy to comply to the wants of the people around him for who he should be?
eddie likes having steve as his friend, too. don’t get it twisted. he loves how unexpectedly expressive steve is about everything, even really small things. steve LOVES to raise his voice, rest a hand on his popped hip, scolding the kids for something stupid with no real heat or malice behind it. and steve is, like, kinda bitchy too. eddie knew he had the capacity to be a real asshole when he wanted to be, that’s all he knew steve for back in the day, when he was back in high school, hanging around tommy h and the basketball boys, the jocks. eddie would spend his days hearing only whispers and gossip in the hallways of the parties at king steve’s house and the fights king steve had started and won on the court or out in the fields, only ever getting as close as a shove into a locker with the guy at the time, but eddie knew how it could go. he knew all about what steve had done to jonathan, what he’d said to him, the words he’d used. eddie knew it all. he’d seen enough, and been through enough himself, to know how these guys acted in response to guys like him, like jonathan, people who were lower on the social food chain. so, eddie knew about steve’s “mean streak”, if you will, but this kind of snarky bitchiness was something new to him. harrington was almost, sassy, when he wanted to be. it was less so cruel and more just, just sass. if he’s being completely honest it kind of blew eddie away, at first. he thought steve was one of those dull headed jocks who thought with their fists more than their actual brains, but that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. steve’s insults were well thought out, they were FUNNY, he was smart with his words. and silly. oh my god steve harrington could be so fucking silly, real honest to god goofball when the moment called for it, when he felt comfortable enough. eddie had caught on multiple occasions steve mimicking lightsabers to play fight with dustin, or the stupid fucking shit he would do or say just to make robin laugh, singing along to a song playing on the radio with a funny voice.
it was all a little, intoxicating, to watch. eddie didn’t know what gave him the right to be in on this now, to get to see this side of steve and better yet to be at the other end of some of his best qualities. it was fun, all the time they spent together, but there was always something else tugging inside eddie everytime they spent close time together, too. something, he knew steve wasn’t aware of. something he knew steve wasn’t equipped to deal with. something he knew, was him. was him, making things something more than they should be, because, nobody seemed to be questioning that they could become friends, so why ruin that? why disrupt it?
- robin and steve
“Steve.”
“-but then like, it wasn’t that I didn’t want to watch it I just thought, hey, y’know, let’s try something different for a change, but then he- oh my god he honest to god TACKLED ME Robin — I mean, it was so fucking funny and it happened so quick — and all over a fucking Tom Cruise movie-“
“STEVE.” Robin lightly slammed a hand onto the counter. She had been standing behind it for no short of 20 minutes, watching Steve as he paced around, supposed to be stacking tapes onto shelves, but ended up spending the whole time going on and on, and ON, about how movie night went with Eddie last night. She thought she was bad…
Steve jumped, almost running into a shelf and knocking down his hard work, and seemed to snap out of whatever trance he had found himself in after starting to tell Robin a story about something funny Eddie had done last night.
“Shit, sorry. Sorry, what were you saying? Were you- were you saying something?”
To this, Robin just rolls her eyes and let’s out a laugh, “You, sir, are goddamn hopeless.”
“Sorry. How long was I talking for?” Steve wandered his way over to lean his arms onto the counter from the opposite side.
“Oh, I dunno Steve, just about half an HOUR?”
“That is an over exaggeration Robin, it’s only been like-“
“Honestly, man, i’m concerned for you. You are like next level OBSESSED with Eddie. Eddie Munson. You do realise this right??? You are obsessed with him, Steve.”
To this Steve sputters, lazily waving his hands back and forth.
“No, Robin, what the hell are you talking about? I am not OBSESSED. No need to be jealous, alright, Stevie-Boy here can have more than one friend. Your spot in my heart isn’t any less special now that it’s beginning to be shared by another.” He bats his eyelashes up at her, holding both hands over his chest as if to cradle his heart.
“Oh my GOD! You even SOUND LIKE HIM!”, she playfully slaps his shoulder. “Steve. You are obsessed.”
“I am not obsessed! He’s just a really great guy, alright-“
“Blah blah, yep whatever you say, lover boy.” Robin quips, plopping down onto the chair chair infront of their staff computer, turning herself to face it.
“Wha- what? Lover boy? What the hell Robin, that is not- that doesn’t even make any sense!”
She is just smiling at him now, enjoying seeing him spiral like this. Steve let’s out a sigh as he puts his hands on his hips, and shakes his head, looking at her right back.
He opens and closes his mouth afew times, like he’s really thinking about what he wants to say next. Or like he has no idea what to say next, and his brain is not moving fast enough to formulate the next sentence his mouth knows he wants to say. He wasn’t obsessed. That’s not- that’s like- no. No he was not, Robin was just playing around with him, she knew how to get on his nerves. Get him all wound up over little things just to see him react like this.
After a minute or two, Robin realises Steve was not going to reply anytime soon, so she turns fully back toward him. Saving him from his spiral.
“So, what are you’re plans for tonight Steve-O?”
He lets out a chuckle and walks around the counter till he’s behind it with Robin, leaning his back against it so he can stand across from her and face her.
“Well, not really sure. Parents aren’t home, no early shift tomorrow, might drink afew beers, listen to some music, —“
“See what Eddie’s doin?” Robin finishes for him, quirking her eyebrows up and down as she does it.
“Oh shut up!” Steve just laughs and softly throws a tape from the counter at her chest. “As a matter of fact, yeah I will see what he’s up to. Because we are friends now, Robin. Is that a problem? Actually I was also gonna ask you what you were up to after work, too, but you know what after this I’m having second thoughts, I mean, the way you’ve been treating me lately-“
“Oh my god, you are the worst. Yes, I’m free, of course I’ll hang out with you dingus. You and your tweedle dee.”
Steve laughs at this, then tilts his head.
“Wait, does that make me dumb? Tweedle dumb?! That’s how you see me?”
“Yeah it is actually, got a problem?”
“Oh wow, she’s feisty today. Can’t believe you think I’m dumb, Rob’s. When you come knockin’ tonight, do not expect a warm greeting at my front door.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll take my chances.”
- later. steve’s house. to be continued?

fool for you | kmg (18+)

where you and mingyu have a pact to always spend valentine's day together when you're single pairing: kim mingyu x f.reader genre: friends to lovers; fluff, smut rating: explicit; minors DNI warning: mentions of drinking (they're not drunk), some swearing, mingyu is described as a puppy, kissing, light marking, mentions of some biting, fingering, oral sex (f and m receiving), vaginal sex, unprotected sex (be safe), one use of a pet name (baby), i think that's it but if you see something else, lemme know! word count: ~4.8k a/n: this is for a valentine's day collab by the lovely @playmetheclassics @here4btsfics and @missgeniality. thank you for planning this. and to one of my favorite people, @ugh-yoongi this is for you, happy love day! banner credit: @classicscreations, thank you bby
Tumblr media
It’s always been like this with you and your best friend since you were teenagers. Ever since that awful (read: not that bad, you were just a dramatic teenager) break-up you went through in your second year of high school just before Valentine’s Day. All because your boyfriend didn’t want to have to buy you anything. Which was dumb, you think, because you were teenagers and you weren’t exactly expecting some grand gesture. Not when you’d been dating for less than a year.
But you were upset in that angsty teenager kind of way and Mingyu swooped in to try and fix it, in true best friend fashion. He showed up at your house that night with all your favorite snacks and some movie that you couldn’t remember. What you did remember, though, was your promise to always be each other’s Valentine’s date if you were both single. It wasn’t as much for him as you and you knew that. You couldn’t help it, you just loved love and the idea of spending the day with someone special. Which he was to you.
Now it’s been 10 years since you made the promise to each other. Those 10 years have seen you both through finishing high school, going to college, countless dates, and so much change. The only thing that hasn’t changed is always making time for each other, no matter what else was going on. Mingyu is your best friend and you know you’re his. You’re sure nothing can change that.
And since you’re both actually adults now (kind of), you can go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day at a nice place with good food. Some of your other friends think it’s weird, that you go out on what’s essentially a date on the “most romantic” day of the year. That’s when you always chime in to remind everyone that Valentine’s Day is about love, not just romantic relationships. You and Mingyu do love each other, always have. Why not celebrate that?
Tumblr media
“Cheers to another year spent with my favorite person,” you say and raise the glass of champagne, a complimentary one for all reservations that night.
“Yeah I guess you’re okay,” Mingyu agrees when he clinks his glass against yours.
“Wow, I see how it is,” you retort and he smiles.
“I’m always happy when we get to do this, you know that,” Mingyu says.
“Maybe,” you shrug, “doesn’t hurt to hear it again.”
“Ah yes, the attention monster reappears,” Mingyu says and you roll your eyes without any real annoyance behind it.
“Hey, I was really good when you were dating Nayeon,” you protest. “I just like getting to hang out with my best friend.”
“You’re right,” he concedes.
You’re expecting him to say more because you haven’t really talked about the breakup even though it’s been about a month. “That’s it?”
“What?” he asks, reaching for a roll in the center of the table.
“I just, I don’t know, we haven’t really talked about what happened with her,” you say.
“There’s nothing to talk about,” Mingyu says. It’s more of a shrug than anything as he grabs a roll. “You knew we were having problems.”
This kind of sparks your interest, so you pull the butter away before he can reach it. At first, a look of betrayal flashes across his face. Playful, of course. And then he’s pouting. God, he’s such a puppy sometimes. Just a giant goofball who has no idea how big he is.
“I know you were having problems,” you finally say to correct him. “Last time I saw you and her together, she seemed happy.”
Mingyu just looks at you for a second. “She didn’t like my friends and it just got old. I was sick of having to justify hanging out with them.”
“Well your friends are idiots,” you say and hand over the butter.
“And to think they always talk about how much they love you,” he says and you laugh.
“I love them too, but they’re still idiots. Both can be true,” you say.
“Yeah, well, Nayeon didn’t see it that way, so,” Mingyu trails off with a shrug.
You reach a hand across the table and his hand meets yours instinctively. “I know I joke around with you, but I am sorry. I just want you to be happy.”
“I am,” he insists and you frown. “Come on, I’ve still got you and some amazing friends. I’m good.”
“Okay,” you agree and reluctantly pull your hand back.
“Besides, I think it’s you we need to talk about,” he says and your brow furrows.
“What about me?” you ask, a little nervous to hear the answer because it is Mingyu, after all.
“Did you forget that it was Seokmin who introduced you to Jeonghan?” Mingyu asks and he’s got that little smirk that you really fucking hate sometimes. Shithead.
“I didn’t forget,” you say and pretend to find the drink menu interesting even though you’ve already ordered.
“Nope, sorry,” Mingyu says and plucks the menu from your hand. “I told you about Nayeon.”
“You two dated for like 9 months? It wasn’t the same?” you point out incredulously.
“And you ghosted him,” Mingyu barks out with a laugh. “The poor guy, he was heartbroken.”
“Oh, he was not,” you scoff. “There wasn’t any spark.”
“That damn spark,” Mingyu says with a shake of his head.
And because sometimes life is actually fair, the appetizer shows up and distracts Mingyu from any further line of questioning. He’s been wanting to try this restaurant since it opened. You’re not really sure why he never went with Nayeon. It’s a win for you though. And Mingyu loves food. He’s an incredible cook, but who would ever mind someone else cooking for them?
It’s also kind of cute. Mingyu is this giant ball of energy, exactly like the puppy you compared him to earlier. More like a golden retriever actually, because he can be smart and also very dumb. He’s always moving until he passes out. He’s fiercely loyal. But when he’s happy and eating something like this, he just kind of slows down, gets focused. There’s something endearing about it.
Tumblr media
Dessert is always the same for the two of you too. You pretend that you only want a bite or two of whatever Mingyu orders and end up eating most of it while he pouts until you order something else. Part of you thinks that you should just order two to start, the other part kind of likes your little tradition. There are a lot of things that you like doing with Mingyu. This is your favorite though, this stupid little Valentine’s Day tradition. Maybe it’s the comfort or the safety. Maybe it’s knowing that even if you’re dating someone shitty, Mingyu will always be there.
“Can I ask you something?” he asks, grabbing a bite of cake with his fork.
“Not sure when we started asking if we could ask questions, but go on,” you say.
“What’s the real reason you didn’t give Jeonghan a chance?” Mingyu asks and that makes you look up suddenly.
“I already told you,” you answer.
“Not sure when we started avoiding answering things, but go on,” he says, throwing your line back at you.
“I mean, it’s true, I didn’t feel a spark and I don’t know,” you say as you search for the words. “I guess I just don’t wanna be wasting my time dating someone when it’s not going to go anywhere.”
“You never know though,” he says and you can’t really pinpoint the emotion.
“I don’t know,” you say and think for a second. “Have you ever just gone on a date and been sitting across from someone that’s nice and smart and funny and attractive, literally everything you should want but…it’s just, not there?”
Mingyu chuckles even though it’s not really funny. “Yeah, I guess I have.”
“And, okay, like part of me was also thinking that this holiday was coming up. So I either had to just shut it down or agree to do something with him,” you say and look down, embarrassed about what you’re going to admit. “I just kind of thought I’d rather spend tonight with you, someone I know I like being around, rather than in some sort of new, probably undefined, relationship with him. Like what if he picked a shitty restaurant or made shitty plans? What if we run out of things to talk about?”
“Wait, you turned him down so you could spend Valentine’s Day with me?” Mingyu asks, eyes wide.
“Come on, not like that,” you say and ignore the fluttering in your stomach. “Just, I don’t know, we always have fun.”
“You like doing this with me,” Mingyu says and you roll your eyes.
“Course I do, Gyu,” you answer easily.
“What if it was like that, though?” he asks and you cock your head to the side. “Like what if we were on a date and it wasn’t just another Valentine’s Day with friends?”
“Mingyu, we’re not…” you start and falter at the look on his face. “Are you serious?”
“You do realize that I’ve actually never been in a relationship on Valentine’s Day, right?” he asks and that stupid smirk is back.
“You must’ve been, we haven’t done this every year,” you say and you’re trying to wrack your brain to see if it’s true.
“No, you’re right, we haven’t. We’ve missed 3 since we made the deal when we were fifteen, all when you were in a relationship,” Mingyu says and you’re at a loss for words.
“Does that mean…?” you try to ask but your mouth just can’t see to catch up with your brain and your heart.
“Do you wanna get out of here and go back to my apartment? It might be easier to talk there,” he says and you just nod.
It’s a lot of information to process and for once, Mingyu is quiet by your side. His hand is firm around yours, which doesn’t feel like a big deal because you’ve held hands for years. Except that it’s entirely different now. And when he needs it back so he can actually drive with both his hands, a part of you misses the comfort of it. Misses the security.
You’re quiet in the elevator and on the walk to his front door, quiet as you walk through the doorway. Even the apartment is quiet, which is surprising given how loud one of Mingyu’s roommates tends to be. But the place is empty, apparently, as Mingyu tells you when he breaks the silence to ask if he can take your coat to hang it up. It’s a strange feeling for a lot of reasons. Right now it’s strange to have Mingyu taking care of you when it’s usually the other way around.
It’s quiet again as you walk the familiar path to the living room to sit down while Mingyu makes you a cup of tea. When he hands it to you, you know that it’ll be perfect because Mingyu’s been your best friend for over a decade and he knows everything about you. And that’s when you realize. Maybe he knew this too. Maybe he’s a step ahead of you in realizing there are real feelings here. Maybe he’s the one you can depend on.
“How long?” you ask, figuring you need to speak eventually.
“Have I liked you?” he asks, needing clarification. You only nod. When he doesn’t answer immediately, you look over at him. Study his face in profile before he answers. “It’s kind of a long answer, I guess. I had a crush on you that first Valentine’s Day, but I figured you also just needed a friend. And I realized how much I did love our friendship. Plus we were kids.”
He takes a breath to collect his thoughts. “I haven’t been in love with you for 10 years, just to be clear,” he says and chuckles. “Not that I haven’t thought about it either. Mostly it’s just been that you were my best friend and we went on these little friend dates and I didn’t think too deeply about it.”
“Did something change?” you ask, still not ready to address your own feelings.
“I’m not sure how to explain it. Nayeon and I were just kind of throwing out things for Valentine’s Day even though it was still over a month away. And she made a comment about how she hoped you’d have someone so you wouldn’t be missing me,” Mingyu says and frowns.
“She isn’t exactly the first to not like it,” you say quietly.
“It wasn’t even that, it was all me,” Mingyu says honestly. “I started to think about how I wouldn’t get to spend it with you and that was…a wake-up call. Nayeon and I broke it off not much after that. And honestly, what I said about my friends was true. She hated Seokmin.”
“How does anyone hate him? He’s a sunshine baby,” you say and Mingyu laughs. “Minghao I get, maybe, because he can be mean if he doesn’t like you. But not Seokmin.”
“Right?” he agrees. “So I was thinking about you and us and trying to sort things out when Seokmin said he was going to introduce you to Jeonghan and my heart broke. I couldn’t imagine having just broken it off with Nayeon only to still not get to see you for our tradition. That’s when I knew for sure. And we aren’t kids anymore.”
“So, like, what do we do now?” you ask, and Mingyu studies you for a moment.
“What do you want to do?” he asks. “I mean, are you…oh my god, why is this so hard? I just told you how I felt but I don’t know…”
He’s rambling and it’s incredibly endearing because he doesn’t usually get flustered like this. It also makes you realize that he’s laid everything out while you’ve said almost nothing. You rest a hand on his leg to stop him from stuttering through things. “Hey, I realize I didn’t say this. But I do have feelings for you too.”
“You do?” Mingyu asks, his whole face lighting up.
“Yeah, dummy, that’s what I really meant when I was talking about sitting across from Jeonghan not feeling the spark. He’s a great guy but he’s not you,” you say easily.
“What do we do now?” Mingyu asks, making you laugh.
“I mean like I really wanna kiss you, so,” you say, watching as his eyes go wide, just for a moment.
And then he’s sliding over on the couch, gently tucking a piece of your hair behind your ear, so careful like he can’t tell if it’s all really happening. So cautious. It’s at odds with your best friend who’s always tripping over his own feet and never seems to know just how big he is. Your whole body is hyper-aware of his and even though he admitted his feelings first, you’re still a little worried that this isn’t real either. When his lips finally meet yours, it occurs to you just how many times you’ve imagined this. How many times you’ve looked at his lips and wondered if they were soft or what they would feel like against yours. How many times you’ve wondered about his hands running over your body.
His lips feel better than you expected, the perfect mix of soft and firm against your own. One of his large hands cups the side of your face, fingers curling around behind your ear. You’re not even sure which one of you deepens the kiss, you’re only aware that your tongues are moving together and that it’s making you feel a little light-headed. The angle is awkward but you’re not sure you really care. You’re kissing your best friend and it’s everything you’ve ever needed and nothing like you thought.
He pulls away and you’re a little embarrassed by the way your lips chase after his, a little unused to being the one that pouts in this relationship. Yet that’s exactly what you do when you see him just looking at you.
“Is this actually happening?” he asks. You let out of huff of air.
“Well not now, since you stopped kissing me,” you say. You expect him to laugh or roll his eyes. Instead, he only looks fond. So incredibly fond.
“Never would’ve pegged you as the pouty, whiny type,” Mingyu says. Now you’re the one that rolls your eyes.
“I’m leaving,” you announce and get up.
You’re actually a little surprised when he lets you stand up and take a few steps toward the door. There’s a chance for your stomach to drop, just a little bit. And then he’s grabbing your arm to spin you around to him.
Fuck, he’s tall. Which you’ve always known, but it’s different when he’s crowding your space and caging you between his arms. Your back is against the wall when you finally tilt your head up to look at him. Whatever playful glint that had been in his eyes earlier is gone. There’s no question that he wants you as much as you want him, maybe more.
You pull his face down to yours to kiss him again, harder this time, let your hands tangle in his hair that he’s finally grown out after literal years of asking him. His hands grip your hips, just on the right side of too hard.
And, okay, you don’t want to complain, but Mingyu genuinely is a giant and it’s kind of hard on your neck to crane it so you can continue kissing him. Just as you start to rise up on your tiptoes, Mingyu’s hands move from your hips down to the backs of your thighs. You gasp into his mouth when he picks you up, balancing you against the wall. It’s nothing but heat between the two of you when you wrap your legs around his waist, trying to help him keep you held up.
“Fuck this,” he says quietly as he pulls you away from the wall.
You squeak at losing your backrest and wrap your arms around his neck tighter like you’re afraid to fall. He just chuckles.
“You know I’d never drop you,” he assures you, voice low.
Even though he said it, you’re expecting him to deposit you on the bed. He doesn’t. He’s so gentle when he places you on the edge of his bed and you’re wondering where all the restraint is coming from. You sure as hell don’t have this kind of control.
Almost on their own, your hands reach for his shirt and he watches as you unbutton it carefully, sliding it down his arms. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen him shirtless (and you’ve seen him shirtless a lot), he’s still beautiful. So beautiful that you don’t realize he’s reaching for the hem of your dress, that’s already almost at your hips from him picking you up, removing it quickly before unclasping your bra just as quickly. It leaves you almost completely exposed, only your underwear left. The urge to be shy is brief when you see the way he’s looking at you. You spare a moment to consider if anyone’s ever looked at you like that (they haven’t, you’re sure).
This time the kiss you get is actually quick before his mouth moves down over your body. He sucks one of your nipples between his teeth and your back arches in response. And there’s something a little weird about it all. There’s nobody in the world you know better than Mingyu, with his endless energy and restlessness. But you didn’t know this side of him. The side where he takes his time, slows down so every moment feels more important, focuses on you and you alone.
You don’t stop him as he continues to move down your body and nips along the way. It doesn’t matter that he’s marking you up, doesn’t make you pause like it has before with anyone else. Not that anyone is going to be seeing these marks anyway, since he’s currently focusing on your inner thigh. And fuck, it feels good, but you’re also a little impatient, a little needy when your hand knots in his long hair again. Without even seeing his face, you know he’s smiling. Smirking, probably. He doesn’t have to tell you that he loves to see you whiny for him.
(He does anyway, though, because he’s still a menace to society and to you specifically. He doesn’t have to tease you either, but he does that too, making you beg before he removes your underwear.)
“Mingyu please,” you beg, already reduced to this.
His legs on yours from between your legs and you let out a heavy breath. His eyes are still on you when he asks, “what is it you’re asking for?”
“Something, anything,” you say because you’re no longer too proud to beg. You can yell at him for it later. Right now you just need.
A second later, he gives you what you asked for. He runs his tongue up your folds lazily, too slow. It’s deliberate, you know. And you know that you should appreciate that he’s not in a rush. It’s just that you’re so on edge and this isn’t helping. Maybe he can tell by the way your hand tightens in his hair or the way you moan or even the way you squirm with his tongue inside you. Whatever it is, something makes him speed up and praises fall easily from your lips. The praises only seem to push him on, which isn’t surprising. Mingyu has always had a thing about praise.
Mingyu slides a finger inside your cunt without much warning and it’s all too much. You never really paid that much attention to his hands (which was good for your sanity, probably). But his long finger moves quickly inside your cunt and you clench around him without meaning too. He hums against your clit, makes it feel like a praise. When he slides a second finger in, you’re not sure how much longer you’ll last. The rhythm of his fingers sliding inside you along with his mouth on your clit is driving you wild.
He curls his fingers inside of you and thrusts faster, not teasing now, certainly not dragging it out. It’s silent permission for you to let go. The orgasm rips through you and you fall back onto the bed, dully aware of him guiding you through it. You’re breathing heavily when you feel his fingers slide out and prop yourself up in time to see him put his fingers in his own mouth. And fuck, okay that’s also really hot.
You lean forward to undo his pants. Those fall to the floor with his boxer briefs and your eyes go a little wide. He’s bigger than you’re expecting, not that you’ve spent much time thinking about him. Now he’s the one that looks a little shy, even though it was you that was just coming on his tongue.
He goes to grip his cock and you snap out of it, gently moving his hand away. Instead, you lean forward to spit on the tip, spreading it along his length, thinking you might tease him. Just a little bit. Your strokes are slow, at least at first, and he just watches, seems to be caught up in the moment. Until he gets impatient and jerks a little into your hand, even though you can tell he’s trying not to.
You just look up at him, watch his eyes on you as you take his cock into your mouth. Mingyu gathers your hair in his hands, but lets you go at your own pace. Slowly, you find your rhythm, taking as much into your mouth as you can. Mingyu seems to like to give praise as much as he likes to receive it, though, because it falls out of his mouth between his groans.
“Baby, hang on,” Mingyu says and gently pulls himself back. Your eyes go wide for a second before registering that his look is just want. “Can I…I mean, I really want to fuck you. Fuck, I really want to feel you.”
That, almost more than anything else, goes straight to your core. You know you’re already getting wet again but why does he have to look like that when he says it? Why does he have to look like this is more than he’s ever experience? Why did him calling you baby make your brain short circuit?
“God, yes Mingyu, yes, I want to feel you inside me,” you manage to say as you’re moving back into the center of the bed.
Mingyu is reaching for his bedside table the next second and you watch him. There’s a part of you that knows it’s best to be safe, knows that you never know. But the other part, the much louder part, just wants to feel him. It’s the part that knows even though he could be a fuckboy, he’s not. Knows he doesn’t sleep around. So you tell him you’ve got an IUD, even though he already knows, and not to worry. He checks, because he cares about you more than he knows how to express, but there’s a part of him that’s excited too.
He’s hovering over you the next second, pressing kisses against every bit of your skin his lips come into contact with. He only stops for a second to line himself up at your entrance, slides the tip between your folds and comments on how wet you are again. As soon as he presses the tip into your cunt, his lips are on yours again, catching the moans. Or maybe distracting you from how big he is inside of you.
You’re thankful for this side of him, the side that’s so careful with you, the side that’s much more in control of his body than you’ve seen anywhere else. Thankful because he’s moving slowly, letting you adjust. And because you know neither of you are going to last that long once he actually does start moving.
“Please,” you nearly whisper, fingers digging into Mingyu’s arms.
It’s all he needs, though. He starts moving, slowly snapping his hips as he thrusts into you. It’s all so much. You’re not sure you’ve ever felt this much while fucking someone. You love to love and love feelings, but sex has always been somehow separate for you. Not that you don’t feel during sex. It’s just that you’ve always been able to separate the feelings. You can’t imagine doing that now and maybe that’s because none of them were Mingyu.
You know he wants to make it last, you do too, but it’s all just really overwhelming. So you focus on this moment, on how he speeds up, how his breath sounds so close to you, the way his muscles contract with each movement, on the way he stretches you. You dig your nails into his arms to keep yourself grounded and he groans. He picks up his pace a little more, pulling almost all the way out before thrusting all the way in, making you scream out.
It feels like it all happens too fast. You’re still sensitive from your first orgasm. And you know Mingyu is close too, can feel the way his thrusts falter. You clench around him, let him know you’re close, say whatever comes out. Most of it is probably incoherent, you think. But he understands anyway, is right there with you. Your second orgasm rips through you even harder than the first. Mingyu thrusts through it, releasing into you in the process.
It’s a few minutes later, after you’ve both somewhat caught your breath and he’s pulled out of you, that you fully realize what’s happening. Mingyu has one hand behind his head and the other arm around you, eyes closed. You prop yourself up on your elbow to look at him, appreciate all his features up close for what feels like the first time in all your years of friendship. He opens his eyes and meets yours. It’s the best smile you can ever remember seeing.
“So, I guess we’re doing this,” you say, watching his face closely.
“Yeah, we are,” he agrees, no room for argument. “I’m not letting go of you now.”
You lay back down and bury your face in his side. You’re not sure what else to say. “Hey, Mingyu?”
“Hmm?” he says. You feel it more than hear it.
“Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Review #146: Parallel Lines, Blondie
Man oh man oh man. I love Blondie so much. I found this record in the Windsor Oxfam. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I remember what boyfriend was with me so that puts me between 15 and 18. Yeah, same guy. I actually don’t remember if he ended up getting his hands on this record or not. I think I still have it. Will rifle through my collection later to check.
Blondie was in the “being cool” wilderness for some absolutely crazy reason at that point, and nobody really gave a shit about them anymore. When I was 17 or 18 they were playing the Reading Hexagon which is honestly still just such an unbelievable insult I’m still annoyed about it. I’ll circle back to that.
Parallel Lines epitomizes the complete and total coolness and badassery of Debbie Harry. I have never wanted to be someone more than I wanted to be her. So much confidence. Such incredible cheekbones. Such commitment to art. No apologies. The voice of an angel one moment and snarling whimsical warnings, like, hey you, don’t fuck with me, the next. Always standing in front of all of those completely non-descript nobody dudes. Yeah they’re playing the music, but who cares, who are they? It’s all her. She is Blondie.
Can I pick a favorite? It opens with Hanging on the Telephone, in which she is really threatening to rip the phone clean off the wall. It might be that one. But we’ve also got the classic One Way Or Another, which needs no comment, and one of my actual favorites of all time, Heart of Glass which never fails to fuck me up, but like, it’s a god damn disco track? Like sure, yeah, let’s boogie away our heart break. And I did. And I have. And I will. And these are all SINGLES. We aren’t even discussing the actual album tracks yet. Just listen to it. Honorable mention goes to Sunday Girl, which I always really loved. It’s cute and it’s kind of sweet in a very teenage girl kind of way that worked for me since I was in fact, a teenage girl. Also, not on the official album release, but there was a version of that track where the latter half was sung entirely in French and I always really dug it.
Okay so circling back to the Hexagon. This is a weird story and I’m still not sure how I feel about it, to this day. As I said, Blondie were playing a show at the Hexagon. I was absolutely obsessed with them, and Debbie Harry. I was also 17 or 18 and spent every penny I had on going to shows, but those pennies were pretty limited. I worked as a waitress at the pub that was two doors down from my house. It was full of characters. One such character was a regular, he was in his late 40s, was very wealthy, didn’t drive, was single, and spent literally every bit of his spare time in that pub. Think on that. He paid a lot of attention to the various young women that worked there. Was he creepy? No not exactly. But did it make you uncomfortable? Yes it did. Because you never knew when he might make it weird. Everyone liked him well enough. One day out of the blue this guy presented me with five tickets to the Blondie show. I didn’t know what in the hell to say or whether to accept them. Or what it meant. Whether there were expectations attached to them. Whether it was okay to take them. I was uncomfortable. I was 17.
Here’s what happened. My Mom, who sort of knew him too, since he was always there, decided it was fine, because she wanted to go. But for it to be okay, she decided he also had to come. So we went, he came, and a few friends too. The thing is though, she never knew him like I did. I saw him every day. I saw him with the other girls that worked at the pub. I saw him drunk off his ass. I don’t know that I ever would have taken the tickets. Or if I did, I’m not sure I ever would have invited him. I feel a bit queasy about it to this day. I think in the end something really off-base happened one night between him and someone on staff and he got barred. That was usually the way it went with regulars who were there that often.
The other thing to note is that Blondie ended because Debbie Harry was with Chris Stein, who was literally dying of some rare autoimmune disease throughout their last tour. There were other factors at play, but essentially, they broke up because he was too sick and she stayed at his side and became his full-time carer. When he was well, he left her. They are, remarkably, still close friends to this day and still perform together. Just never forget that men are dogs, and that Blondie is and always will be Debbie Harry. I love her. To this day she looks better than I do in a mini skirt and I love that for her.
ETA: I checked and in fact, I do not still have Parallel Lines in my record collection, but I am quite confident it got lost when I moved back to the US. Also, I’m not 100% certain that show was at the Reading Hexagon. I just know it was a shitty venue not worthy of Blondie. This was 18 years ago. You get the idea.

grayson hawthorne childhood bsf to lovers head cannons
my first posttt!! grayson hawthorne ily
if u have any advice pls lmk!! also will be taking requests if u have any
rereading this and i realized it’s more of a story than head cannons
word count: 1.9k
you both come from very prominent families in texas, so it’s no surprise that you spent countless events and parties within each others company
you and grayson were in the same nursery
there are multitudes of pictures of you with the brothers as babies/ toddlers, some you forgot even existed
as you and the hawthorne brothers were all similar ages, you often found yourself ditching the adults and the formalities of the event and hanging out separately -usually in the treehouse-
you weren’t really chatty or outgoing per say, especially compared to xander and jameson. however, around them your shell would fade a little bit.
grayson was still quiet around you. one time when you were 12 and he was 14, you were climbing up the tree house with a broken arm (you were too stubborn, and slightly embarrassed to ask for help) he himself was walking towards the tree house from a distance. he sees you struggle, and runs to help you without any hesitation.
you offer him a smile and small “thankyou” when you are both up
he’s halfway turned already, nods without making eye contact, and walks away.
you and grayson didn’t hit the best friends level until around 14/15
you didn’t talk to him as much as you would with xander, which is what led to xander noticing how many things in common you and grayson had
he would subtly (not subtle at all) tell grayson about recent things you were doing
“yeah, she’s into photography… just like you! isn’t that crazy?“
“did you know that she plays cello? just like you!” “i don’t play cello, xander“ “violin, cello, same thing! you could take pictures of violins together! tell me how many other people on earth you could do that with.. none! because she fascinatedly enjoys the same weird things that you do, except she does it better. you could learn some things!”
grayson slowly started talking to you more and more in group settings, and you both became more comfortable in each others presence
one time, you needed help with an art project. you had to design your own fictional apartment and create paintings, posters, photos, and furniture unique to you.
you were not the most creative person at 14, but heights country day had high expectations.
after 3 days of no progress, you called grayson explaining and asking for help.
to your surprise, he agreed to do it and over the next few weeks you both worked on it.
you started to involve snacks and watching movies (ends up being background chatter whilst you talk) or just talking in the times you worked together, to make it feel less like an appointment and more like friends talking and helping each other out
one time you suggested you play music ask background noise, and to his surprise you two had extremely similar music tastes. another thing for you to talk about!
as one of the requirements for the project were your own photos, you and grayson would sneak pictures of each other without the other knowing, and one time went out together for the sole purpose of taking photos of surroundings.
jameson liked to call that “the ultimate first date for nerds”
you and grayson both repeatedly insisted it was not a date (grayson would go all out and beyond if it was)
during these few weeks you became inseparably close, half the time you hung out to work on the project, it was long forgotten within the hour.
you realized you started to develop a small crush on him
after you turned it in and got 100, you took a chance and asked him if you two could go out to celebrate. he was extremely happy for you and your mark, and agreed
you decided on going to the park and have a celebratory picnic, not so subtly accompanied by xander and jameson about 500ft away who just so happened to be coincidentally walking by!
the awkwardness once present many years ago was long gone, and you two were laughing and talking like there was no tomorrow
to anyone who didn’t know you two, they would’ve never even guessed you were as quiet as you were around other people.
around eachother, you felt like there was no pressure to perform, put on a fake face, and any over thinking.
xander and jameson were genuinely surprised, and thought you two were secretly together, and asked grayson about it a few days later
“so! me and xander were casually strolling through the park as one does, and we just so happened to see you and y/n!” graysons infamous eyebrow arch appears with a monotone “and?”
“you were more smiley than i’ve ever seen you in my whole entire life” xander deadpans.
“do you have something to tell us?” “yeah, why would you not tell me and jameson you two were secretly dating!”
“we are not secretly dating, we were celebrating her 100 on the project we worked on.”
“oh yeah, the ‘project’” xander says in air quotes, dragging the oh with an inquisitive look on his face
graysons face is expressionless as he stays silent for a second. “i’m done with this conversation” grayson says as he walks away.
“you know gray, it wouldn’t be so wrong if you liked her. you deserve someone good for you” jameson calls out. grayson pauses for a second, and continues to walk.
hes always liked you, he just didn’t want to ruin the one good thing he had going for him in his eyes. every time he lets someone in, which is rarely, they end up gone.
you were inseparable bsfs, always getting mistaken as together by older adults, or getting told that you should be together.
you and grayson swap annotated books all the time
youd make fun of him for his over analysis of the lines and characters, whilst your annotations would often be “no fucking way” “I KNEW IT” “this psycho bitch” “WHAT” “aww”
he’d make fun of yours as well, but secretly, it was his favorite part of reading the books you’d give him, never failing to make him smile.
he went with you to homecoming, his suit and tie matched your dress and he gave you a matching corsage; all a total surprise to you
literally everybody thought you were together
he held your shoes for you when your feet got tired
after the party, you went to an icecream place and talked for hours still in your outfits. people looked at you strangely but you didn’t care because you were both too infatuated with eachother to pay any mind.
on movie nights you two would have together, you two would always look at eachother at seperate times, turning your head when his eyes are about to catch yours.
when you’d fall asleep on the couch next to him, you’d somehow wake up in your bed
when you watched the notebook together you noticed him shed a single tear whilst you were crying your eyes out
your crying immediately stopped when you saw it and relentlessly teased him for it as he says “he’d never cry to a romance movie”
when nash would come home he’d always ask grayson if you two were together yet.
you had liked grayson for around 3 years now, and you thought that if he liked you he would’ve said something by now (doesn’t make sense when you’ve liked him for 3 years but said nothing, but it’s ok)
so when a cute guy in your math class asked you to prom, you agreed
he ended up being 3 hours late, and when he did show up, he was dancing with another girl the whole time.
you didn’t even like the guy, so why were you so sad? you didn’t know.
you exited through the back door and sat in the parking lot. xander noticed your absence and called grayson right away
sitting in the parking lot with your knees to your chest, mascara threatening to run down your eyes, you notice a car pull up
upon further inspection you realise it’s grayson’s car
you stand up and walk away and he jogs towards you and calls out your name
you turn around “grayson? what are you doing here” you say with a light shake of your head
“what are you doing here.”
“it’s my prom night?”
“no, i mean out here. why aren’t you inside with everyone else?”
“i was just getting a breather, drunk teenagers am i right?” followed by a slight chuckle “im going back inside now, you can go.” you start to walk away as he’s still standing there
“you always look down when you lie, you know that?”
you stop dead in your tracks and turn around, “what?”
“whenever you lie, you look to the side, look back up, look down, and then look back up again.”
“what? you’re talking crazy grayson. just go home, i’m fine”
“there you go again, side, back up, down, up again.”
“how’d you even notice that?” you say with a star struck, almost in awe expression on your face.
he walks closer to you “i notice everything about you.”
you’re at a loss for words, just silently staring at him while he keeps talking
“i notice that you always smile at people, even if you don’t talk, you smile. i notice that even when someone has wronged you numerous times, you’ll show them kindness. i notice that whenever you’re struggling, you keep it to yourself. i notice that you also insist on doing things yourself unless you absolutely need assistance, so you don’t feel like a burden, and it drives me crazy. you drive me crazy”
you’re genuinely dumbfounded, not knowing what to say, too many thoughts jumping in of your mind you settle on “i don’t do that” real smooth
“do you remember that day in the treehouse?” he pauses, “you broke your arm, yet you still tried to climb it.”
you lightly laugh “yeah i was like 12, i thought i could do anything”
“you were still you.”
your face stills, and you notice something unfamiliar in the way grayson looking at you, something you’ve never noticed in his eyes before
“gray, what are you saying, what does all this mean?”
“i would spend my entire life noticing all the things you don’t know about yourself, and remembering all the moments you forget. because that’s what my life is. it’s you.“ he’s breathing heavier now, and pauses again “and i’ll work every single day of it proving to you that you don’t have to be alone. you are the one that showed me that, and you’re the one who needs to hear that the most. i’ll work everyday so that one day so you can see yourself from a lens that isn’t tinted with doubt. i’ll work everyday proving to you that i love you.”
by the end of his confession/monologue, he’s standing right in front of you inches away from your face you’re in genuine shock for a few seconds
“say something. anything” after a beat of silence, you reply
“you know, i kept all the photos i took of you, of us, from that one art project years ago. it’s in my special box” you say with a light laugh
a smile starts to appear on his face “your what?”
“my box full of things that i love, and never want to lose” you say in a quieter voice, looking at him straight in the eyes. “i love you, grayson, and i never want to lose you.”
he reaches for your face and kisses you like you were the air he breathed, kissed you like you were the only person in the whole world, and like his life depended on it. he kissed you, and suddenly your world felt a little bit lighter.
from that point on, you were together. you never explicitly told anyone you were together, not secret, just private.
a few weeks later, you two were walking around the hawthorne house, holding hands when xander and jameson pass by
“how do say they aren’t a couple when they do things like that!” xander exclaims pointing at your interlocked hands
jameson rolls his eyes annoyedly with a smile on his face “they are practically married at this point”
grayson turns around and looks back at xander with the faintest smile on his face “oh, we are a couple” and continues walking
“WHAT??!!”
“i so called it”
this is my first ever tumblr post i hope you enjoyedddd
if you have any advice/improvements give them!!
i have a part 2 started of what it’s like actually dating and it’s more head cannons than storytelling - this was def story/background heavy - lmk if anyone’s interested!!

CHAPTER THREE | so inviting, i almost jump in.
'it's nice to have a friend' masterlist + playlist | previous chapter
PAIRING: jamie tartt x fem!reader
WORD COUNT: 3.6k
SUMMARY: jamie and reader go out for drinks and meet a familiar face that brings up a painful memory for both of them.
WARNINGS: language
A/N: i'd like to apologize in advance for this one because the end is just 100% angst so brace yourselves sorry :')
Tumblr media
It was like deja vu. Over the past weeks, you and Jamie started hanging out on a regular basis. Late nights and weekends were often spent eating pizza, watching old movies, and searching for old schoolmates online. He even helped you re-organize your room when he arrived during one of your cleaning days. You uncovered a box of old toy rings that Jamie gave you every birthday of yours for five years.
Initially, Jamie would message you if he was on the way. But the more he came over, it went back to your usual habits of him just showing up at your door at random hours of the day. When you weren't home, he'd message that he dropped by and then you'd call him when you got back. He'd race over to watch another one of your favorite childhood movies.
You hadn't realized how much you missed it all till you started spending time with Jamie again. You missed it so much that you may have neglected to mention to Liv how often you were with him. Despite the mini-sermon she gave you weeks ago about confronting Jamie, you hadn't actually made any moves to do it. All of this started to feel normal, regular, and the thought of disturbing that scared you too much. Even if there were times where you were annoyed at how casual he talked about the past few years of radio silence from him. Or how he'd mention his Man City teammates and you felt like tensing up every time.
There was no need to bring it up anymore, something you repeated to yourself. Plus, you were noticing that Jamie was now closer to your childhood best friend than the one who broke your heart. But still, you were cautious around the footballers Jamie associated with. Even when the season started again and Jamie would offer to tour you around the clubhouse or reserve tickets for the games, you'd always politely decline. You're sure the AFC Richmond players aren't terrible people given how highly Jamie would talk about them, but better to be safe than sorry.
Besides, with his now swamped schedule, you hadn’t seen Jamie recently. The most you did was when he’d send messages before training or games to which you’d answer with a “Good luck!” It was weird in the beginning, given that when he was at Man City, Jamie didn’t do any of that, but you hoped that this meant he wouldn’t leave again.
The next time you did was the night after one of their games, which continued their winning streak, thanks to Zava. While you knew Richmond fans — well, Liv and Frankie — were absolutely ecstatic to have him, Jamie despised the guy. You stopped yourself from pointing out the hypocrisy of him hating the player for being self-centered and thinking highly of himself.
You guess it’s working though because now you’re watching Richmond secure their fifth win in a row with your neighbor’s kid, Ronnie. When her mom found out you were a Science professor, she practically begged you to tutor her kid (and occasionally babysit). Ronnie was in primary school, so the lessons were pretty simple and you’ve been doing sessions every week to help her out. You always rewarded her afterward with whatever she wanted to watch on your TV that was age-appropriate, of course. This time, — after running back to their flat to get her Obisanya shirt, — she decided on watching the game.
“Zava’s incredible,” she murmured next to you, staring at the screen as if in a trance. You couldn’t help but chuckle at the reaction. The game was finished and so the channel was just playing match highlights, which for Richmond, were mostly their current star player. Sometimes, you’d spot Jamie in the background and even though the rest of the team was cheering along, he was having a hard time masking his resentment.
When you were finally able to drag her away from the TV, you heated up two plates of lasagna. Ronnie’s mom still hadn’t knocked on your door and you didn’t want to leave her alone in your flat, so she was having dinner with you tonight. For the most part, it was just like eating with Jamie. She was non-stop talking about the match which turned to talking about her favorite players and future games. It reminded you of Jamie as a kid, who’d go on and on about the exact same things.
As you’re washing dishes and Ronnie’s answering some extra worksheets, — she asked for them! — you hear the doorbell ring. You go over and find Jamie standing at the door, much to your surprise.
“Hey! Didn’t know you were coming over,” you say, but after noticing his exasperated expression, you tilt your head. “I know you don’t like a certain teammate, but I thought you’d at least be happy about the win.”
Jamie sighs. “I know." He gives you a weak smile, and you have to admit that even that simple act made your heart skip. “Is that lasagna?”
Jamie enters the room without warning and as soon as he does, your eyes widened remembering who else was there. You turn to the dining room table at the same time as Jamie and together, watch a 9-year-old stare in awe.
“Oh my God,” she let out. “That’s Jamie Tartt!” She walks over to you, leaving behind the worksheets.
You lean over and whisper to Jamie, “Forgot to mention I’m watching my neighbor’s kid.”
But Jamie’s already jumped into celebrity mode. He crouches down and confirms, “That’s me.” He glances at her oversized jersey before asking, “You a fan of Richmond?”
Ronnie nods her head enthusiastically. “I’m Ronnie! Congrats on winning!”
Jamie chuckles, and thanks her. “Nice to meet you, Ronnie.”
You hear someone approach the door and clear their throat and you turn to find Ronnie’s mom looking curiously at you. You turn back to Ronnie — who has now launched into a full monologue about how much she loves the team — and exclaim, “Look who else is here! I think it’s time to head back to your flat, Neens.”
She pouts at that statement, but one look from her mom and she was waving goodbye to the player. You quickly collect all of her stuff scattered around the place and hand it to her mom, who seems too exhausted from her shift to even notice the other person in the room.
Once you close the door, you lean on it and sigh in relief. “Sorry about that. I sometimes watch her after tutoring if her mom isn’t back, yet.”
Jamie shakes his head. “Nah, not a problem. I love meeting fans. Real ego boost.”
Yet another countless eye roll. “Calm down. You’re not even her third favorite player.”
Jamie scoffs, almost offended but after remembering the lasagna, he heads to the kitchen for a plate of his own. You walk beside him and after tripping over a loose marker Ronnie left, you fall forward. Jamie's reflexes kick in and he catches you quickly and you grab hold of his — really broad, you notice — shoulders to steady yourself.
Now you're stuck in a position that happens in almost every 90s rom-com you've watched: your feet diagonally off the ground with Jamie's hands gripping tightly at your waist. Both of you are too much in shock to move and simply look at each other with wide eyes. Your faces were close, too close to be platonic if it was intentional. So much so that if you leaned forward, just a little bit…
You snap out of the trance and move to stand straight up as Jamie lets go of you. You head over to the sink and quietly curse at yourself and that stupid blue marker. Things haven't been weird between you and Jamie for ages. And you weren't going to let the possible resurfacing of your feelings ruin that. Not again. Plus, if you were already burying your old feelings of resentment, why not add onto it too?
You go back to washing dishes when Jamie asks you a question. "Are you doing anything Saturday night?"
Given what just happened, your mind wanders off in the romantic direction before you shake your head. Instead, you respond, "I think you know better than anyone that I never do anything Saturday night." You reply as you wipe your hands. "Why?"
"Just wondering if you want to get a drink with me. Well, you get a drink and I get water 'cause fucking Roy’s banned me from alcohol till the season’s over. I just really need a night out. Fucking Zava, I swear." Forget the fact that he was technically at a night out with his teammates earlier; he more of just wanted a night out with someone who isn't so related to his football life. Or, he just really wants a night out with you.
You snort at that last comment but oblige anyway, ignoring the feeling of disappointment.
Jamie and you had only ever hung out together in the comfort of your own home. You'd just assumed that it was to avoid any unwanted press and since the bar he mentioned was one of those members-only pubs, it makes sense that the first time the two of you hung out publicly was there. But seeing as it was a pub, it's not going to be a romantic not-a-date date that you'll be going on.
Though, you soon realized how different it was from your usual places. Everyone there was dressed up so formally and you were glad that you picked the black trousers that you usually only wear to work over your everyday jeans that had paint stains at the bottom of them. Maybe you had worn it in case Jamie at the last minute decided to take a detour to a nice restaurant, but you were relieved either way.
The two of you ended up just sitting in the bar while Jamie complained about his most recent Twitter feud. Christ, you pray for Keeley Jones for having to deal with all his PR nonsense. When he starts shit-talking Roy for getting him up at 4 am for training, — “I thought he was joking!” — you end up tuning out of the conversation knowing how long the rant was going to be.
Your eyes drift off behind Jamie when you notice a familiar face. Suddenly, it felt like the walls were closing in on you. You could feel your breathing hitch and your fingers were scratching the inside of your palm. Before you could even consider doing anything, he reached you.
"Jamie Tartt!" The footballer's train of thought is broken and he turns to his former teammate to greet him. "Haven't seen you since you went off to be a reality star!"
Jamie simply rolls his eyes at the comment. "Well George, I haven't seen you since they forced you out of Man City!"
"They couldn't afford me anymore," He shrugs before his eyes land on yours. You shift in your seat and you can see the exact moment when Jamie notices how uneasy you've become. "And who's this with you?"
He doesn't remember you. And why would he? To him, you were just another crazed fan at a pub, one of many he's encountered over the years. You doubt that the memory of that night stuck with him the way it did to you.
"This is (Y/N), an old friend of mine," Jamie adds carefully and you build up enough courage to shake his former teammates' hand, but not enough to stay in this conversation.
"I'll let you two catch up while I get another drink." You explain, in an obviously fake cheery voice, but only Jamie spots it. He reaches out for your hand on the table to comfort you, but you swipe it away before he can.
You head off to the other side of the bar to order another beer, but you can't stop your eyes from shifting over to the pair of them again. Jamie looked so comfortable laughing and talking to George. You scoff at the sight. How could he act so chummy with that guy when he was the driving force for why the two of you ended on shitty terms in the first place?
Jamie's told you all about how he's been working on himself and trying to become a better person, but a part of you still feared that one interaction with that guy would unravel everything. He was an absolute prick; the number of fights and scandals Jamie had been in for his entire career was nothing compared to the amount George had in his first five years.
You wanted to trust Jamie, but he was always quick to change who he was when he was around certain people. You just hoped he had grown enough to not let his Man City "mentor" — too many of George’s scandal photos had a 19 to 22-year-old Jamie Tartt in the background — bring back the side of him he's tried so hard to erase.
You don't know how long they were talking, but by the time they moved over to the pool table, your vision was already starting to blur. The drinks just kept coming. Flashbacks from that night started to come in too: the spotting Jamie in the crowd, the confrontation, the holding back of tears, and the walk-out. You couldn't look over at the pair of them without an intense pain appearing in your chest.
Jamie looked back to where you were supposed to be seated and found you spacing out into a corner. It was the same dreamy and tired look you had the first time you tested your alcohol limit when your parents were out of town. Immediately, he abandoned the game of pool and rushed over to you.
"Maybe that's enough alcohol for tonight." Someone pulls the Cosmopolitan from your grasp and you squint your eyes to identify them as Jamie.
"Ha, that's rich coming from you." You can't remember how many times you've had to help Jamie sneak up the stairs and into his bedroom after a night out. "Aren't you still busy hanging out with that Man City prick?" Lack of tactfulness is the most obvious sign you'd drank too much.
"Woo, a little harsh there," You hear George come up to the two of you. You rush — well, more of stumble — forward to confront him, but Jamie holds you back. The retired footballer points out, "She's a feisty one."
"Let's bring you back to your flat, yeah?" Jamie offers softly, but you remove yourself from his arms and shake your head.
"I am perfectly capable of getting home by myself." You grab your clutch from the table. "Don't want to ruin another night for you guys, right?"
A pang of guilt visibly hits Jamie, but George is just left confused. You start to walk towards the exit and get to the door till you feel someone gently take hold of your left arm.
"You can't even see your phone clearly to book a taxi. I'll drive you home." Jamie's voice is low and whatever common sense you have left takes him up on your offer. He turns his head to say goodbye to George, but all the former footballer does is shout, "Don't do anything I wouldn't do!" following by a boastful laugh.
You clench your clutch at the comment, but Jamie brings you out the door before you can turn back and do something that'll land you on the front page of the Sun the next morning.
When you get to Jamie's car, he carefully helps you into the passenger's seat and puts on your seatbelt before getting into the car himself. Once the car starts, you take the chance to close your eyes in an attempt to remedy the throbbing headache you feel is already coming on.
You don't know how long you stay like that, but when you open your eyes, you're already at your building. You slowly get out of the car and once you make it to the sidewalk, Jamie asks, "Can’t believe you just downed a dozen drinks like a recent divorcee."
"I wonder why," You scoff and side-eyed him, unwilling to move your head from looking forward. You see the footballer's expression drop and suddenly you understand what Liv was going on about. You finally break. "How could you still be so friendly with him, Jamie! He’s an absolute arse and everyone in England knows it!"
"He was my teammate! And still a major name in football, even after retirement and all the shit he’s done. I didn't want to risk anything!" Maybe if you were sober, you'd accept that reason. There were countless alumni, tenured professors, and chairmen that you had to suck up to just to keep your job. But were drunk people ever known to be rational?
"Is that why you let him talk to me like that? Back in the pub?"
"You two barely spoke a word to each other," Jamie points out but you shake your head furiously.
"I mean back in Cardiff!" You exclaimed loudly and you knew for a fact that at least one of your neighbors had heard your outburst. But you didn't really care.
For a moment, neither of you said anything. You went to walk up the stairs, expecting it to be the end of it. If Jamie didn't have anything to say, then what was the point? He'd let you walk away and tomorrow morning, you'd be back to normal and you can just pretend this night didn't happen. You've done it before.
"You said you didn't want to talk about that." Jamie finally speaks up.
"I thought I didn't," you admit, your voice levels lower than before. You continue walking when you feel a presence following suit. You stayed in that silence till you made it back to your flat. It's a miracle you didn't tip over on the way in, but spite was enough to power you through.
Jamie closed the door behind him and sighed, "I couldn't just ignore him at the bar."
Suddenly, any fear of confrontation seemed to disappear. Your anger resurfaced and you spit out, "You seemed just fine ignoring me for seven years." You turn to face him and for a second, the pitiful look in his eyes almost made you back off. Almost. "Or is abandoning your best friend easier when she's not some big-shot footballer?"
"I know you're mad," Jamie starts and you angrily run your hands through your hair.
"Yes, I'm mad, Jamie!" You shout and you watch him take a step back, but you don't falter. "I'm mad at you! Seeing George tonight just reminded me of it and how a part of me still fucking hates you for taking their side."
"I've been trying to apologize—"
"I know, Jamie, but I'm still pissed at you, okay? For leaving me like that! And for letting me leave that night! I mean, how could you? Just throw away a decade of friendship for some football assholes that threw you away the second they could." Everyone knew how Jamie's career with Man City ended and it was surely a sore spot for the player, but at that moment, you didn't care.
Before Jamie can even defend himself, you start again. "I... fuck Jamie, I loved you. You were my best friend. I would've spent every waking hour with you if I could've. But you couldn't care less about me, right? The moment someone more famous than me believed in you the same way I always did. You just stopped answering my calls, and my texts, and even my parents when they asked you for me! Worst of all, you didn't give me a single reason why!
"Honestly, I would've been fine if you did stop being friends with me, as long as you gave me an explanation. Even if it was for some stupid reason that I wouldn't understand or hate you for, because at least I could've moved on! Instead, I spent years wondering where it all went wrong. If I could've done something, anything to change what happened." You start to feel the strain on your throat and know for a fact that at least one of your neighbors would be eavesdropping, but you were finally letting it out.
Your voice comes out hoarse, "And then the next time I did see you, in that pub, you were a whole new person. A complete and utter prick, Jamie. After that night, I prayed that you'd come to your senses. Do the decent thing and apologize, even if it was just a fucking text or something. But no, you kept ignoring me and pretending I didn't even exist. So I forced myself to stop thinking about you. To stop caring about you calling me. To stop dreaming about you telling me you fucked up and that you were sorry. So I could move on with my life."
You look away from Jamie and around the living room in an attempt to stop the tears from flowing down. You were unsuccessful. "And after years, I did move on. I went to London, got a job, and stayed as far away as I could from football. From you. But God, you always find a way back to me, huh?
"It just had to be you who found me in Nelson Road that night. It had to be you who picked me up, who drove me home, and reminded me how happy I was when we were kids. So much so that I thought I'd be fine without an apology! As long as I had you back in my life, it'd be fine. But as you can tell now, it's not." The amount of alcohol in your system was wearing you down and you were starting to get tired.
You start to lose your balance when Jamie's there to catch you, but you harshly push him off you. He doesn't seem affected by your strength, but even then, he moves back.
"Just get out, Jamie." is all you manage to say this time and after hesitating for a moment, he does. Now you're left alone again, only with your thoughts and the realization that any chance of bringing back what you had with Jamie was gone.
A/N: and that's that! i hope this teases the interlude nicely cause i'm sick of being so vague about that night since that's up next and trust me, it gets worse in that one... anyway i hope you all enjoyed this one!

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝟑:
Here we are, Saturday.
This morning when I woke up, I was in high spirits. I was going to spend my day with her, well, at least half of my day, given that I still had to work this morning.
Last night, I had a lot of trouble falling asleep; I couldn't stop thinking about today and how it would go. I was apprehensive, expecting both the best and the worst, but I really didn't know what to expect. Even though she had made advances, Caleb, her so-called friend, had clearly hinted that he also wanted the place I coveted.
So naturally, I spent my night on social media trying to find Caleb's accounts to learn more about him. And to be honest, it wasn't very difficult to find.
"Caleb_the.1, seriously?" I thought when I found his Instagram account. This guy was so self-centered it almost made me want to vomit.
His bio consisted of bro-ish phrases to show that he was an alpha athlete above the others, it was ridiculous to the point of being laughable. How can you hang out with this kind of guy, y/n? Seriously, aren't you ashamed?
Scrolling through his profile, I found about fifteen shirtless photos of him, of course, it goes without saying. And honestly, it's not very prudent of him to expose his life so much on social media. In less than five minutes, I knew which gyms he frequented, his favorite restaurants, and all the places he liked to go daily, giving me the opportunity to learn a little more about him.
But for now, he'll have to wait. My priority is y/n, and I'll deal with his case after our appointment.
"You're late!" Sarah said to me when I arrived at the bookstore.
"Sorry, traffic was jammed this morning," I lied. I didn't have an excuse; I was late only because I spent an extra 20 minutes scrolling through Caleb's profile this morning to learn more.
"Matt, since when does traffic matter to you when you're on your bike??" she said, confused.
"It's none of your business, Sarah, stop asking me questions," I said, shaking my head.
"Yeah, you're lucky I'm your friend; otherwise, I would've fired you!" she said before turning around and going back to her tasks.
It's true; I'm lucky to have a friend like Sarah. I probably don't think enough about thanking her.
I went back to my post and continued my morning, chatting a bit with her; there weren't many customers today.
"Matt, you're lying; you're not going to tell me you've never thought about that before!" Sarah said, shocked that I've never had any weird fantasies about a celebrity.
"No, never, and I find it weird that you were obsessed with Zac Efron until the end of high school!" I said, laughing.
"First of all, I wasn't obsessed! I just had a little crush on him, and secondly, everyone had a crush on that guy back then!" she said, justifying herself.
Meanwhile, I hadn't noticed, but someone had entered the shop at that moment.
"Yeah, in middle school, Sarah, not in high school!" I replied, laughing.
"Screw you, Matty!" she said, chuckling and giving me a light push.
We were interrupted by the voice of a newcomer behind us.
"Hey," she said, her voice a bit sharp.
I immediately turned around, recognizing y/n's voice.
But something was different; her voice wasn't as gentle as usual, and I couldn't see her usual smile.
"Oh, hi, y/n," I replied, smiling.
"Um, this is Sarah, my colleague. I didn't know you'd come so soon," I said, scratching my neck.
"Hi," Sarah said, smiling and extending her hand.
"I've got my hands full, sorry," y/n said to Sarah, giving her some sort of fake smile.
"Yeah, I thought I'd come a little earlier to bring you some coffee," y/n said, turning to me.
"Oh, um, thanks, you didn't have to," I said timidly.
"No, of course, I insist. It's the least I can do after you gave me a ride home last time!" she said, casting a fleeting glance at Sarah.
I'm not sure what game she's playing, but I don't get the feeling she likes Sarah too much.
"Yeah, well, I'll leave you guys. I still have a lot of work. Matt, don't linger too long; we still have to do inventory," Sarah said before leaving us.
A brief silence ensued before I decided to speak.
"It's really nice of you to get the coffee, y/n," I said, smiling.
"It's nothing, I got you a decaf," she said, handing me my coffee.
"Wow, wait, this is my favorite. How did you know—" I started to say before she cut me off.
"Just lucky, I guess," she said, smiling.
Maybe this girl knows me a little better than I thought. I thought I was harder to read than that.
"Well, thank you very much. I finish in 2 hours. If you want, you can browse the bookstore while you wait for me," I said.
"That works out perfectly; I was in the mood to read today," she said, smiling before heading off to explore the bookstore.
It was nice working with her around. We exchanged little glances, and most of the time, she would smile at me.
Honestly, I could get used to working under these conditions.
"Matt, focus. I don't mind you having your friends over here, but I can't handle the customers and inventory all by myself!" Sarah said, getting annoyed, interrupting yet another exchange of glances with y/n.
"Sorry, if you want, I'll take care of the inventory and close the shop today," I said, trying to make amends.
"Okay, but hurry up. We have 45 minutes left before closing, and there's still a stack of books in the back room," she said, rolling her eyes.
"Yes, ma'am," I said, smiling, and she couldn't help but smile back before I went to do what I needed to do in the back room.
POV of Sarah:
I watched Matt walk into the back room, smiling and shaking my head. How could I stay mad at him after all?
Anyway, I headed back to the counter to tidy up the things lying around when I noticed Matt's friend heading towards the back room.
"Hey, sorry, but you can't go in there," I said, stopping her in her tracks and pointing to the sign on the door that specified "Employees Only."
She stopped and turned to face me.
"Sasha, right?" she said, crossing her arms.
"It's Sarah," I replied.
"Yeah, whatever, Sarah. Have you had feelings for Matt for a long time?" she asked, catching me off guard.
"W-what?" I said, furrowing my brows.
"Let's not play this little game, please. It's not going to work with me. You and I both know you have a huge crush on him, and frankly, it's pathetic. You can see he's not interested in you, so I suggest you keep your distance and let those who actually have a chance take theirs," she said, staring me in the eyes.
I didn't even know how to respond. I couldn't deny it; everything she had just said was true. But there were much better ways to say it.
There was something off about this girl. She had this threatening air about her towards me when I hadn't done anything to her.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go join Matt," she said, before striding off and pushing through the door without giving me a chance to say anything.
Back to Matt's POV:
I heard the door open, thinking it was Sarah coming to say goodbye.
"What, already? It's closing time, and I haven't finished the inventory yet!" I said before seeing y/n appear.
"Oh, it's you," I said, a bit surprised because she had no reason to be here.
"Yeah, I asked Sarah if I could come give you a hand," she said, smiling.
"And she said yes?" I asked, surprised because Sarah is usually strict about the rules, so it would have been strange for her to let y/n in without any objections.
She paused for a moment as if she was taking time to think before answering me.
"No," she said, chuckling, "I waited for her to turn her back before sneaking in here," she confessed, and I laughed.
"I feel like you're going to get me into trouble," I said, smiling.
"Come on, it's not like I'm going to steal any books. Plus, I think it's stupid to restrict access; it's just a back room," she said, rolling her eyes.
"And honestly, I find your colleague rather annoying," she said before covering her mouth.
"Sorry, I spoke before thinking," she said, embarrassed, and I chuckled at her action.
I couldn't help but find it cute.
"Firstly, access is restricted because there are some pretty old books here, the kind that should absolutely not be touched unless you're a professional," I began to explain.
"And secondly, yes, Sarah can be annoying, I'll give you that, but she can also be really nice. I'm sure you'd get along great with her," I said, continuing to do the inventory.
"We'll see about that later. For now, let me help you with all this so we can finally go for a ride on the bike," she said, chuckling before coming to help me.
With y/n's help, I managed to finish the inventory just in time for closing.
As we were about to leave the back room, Sarah shot me a look and nodded towards a section of the bookstore, indicating she wanted to talk to me privately.
"I'm going to do one last round in the aisles just to make sure everything's in order before closing. Wait for me here," I said to y/n, realizing Sarah wanted to talk to me alone.
I walked over, and she pulled me a bit further into the bookstore to ensure y/n couldn't overhear us.
"Hey, what's going on?" I said, chuckling.
"Listen, Matt, I'm your friend, and as such, I can't keep this to myself, you understand?" she began, confusing me.
"Your friend y/n, or whatever she is to you, I don't trust her. You shouldn't hang out with her; that girl is really weird," she said.
Here we go.
Seriously, Sarah, instead of being happy for me, you're having a jealousy fit?
"Okay, I don't know where you're going with this, Sarah, but y/n is a great person, and I won't let you badmouth her just because you're jealous," I said, rolling my eyes.
"Jealous? Matt, she threatened me earlier, specifically telling me to stay away from you! I'm not jealous!" she said, getting annoyed.
My y/n do something like that?
It's not possible; she's way too kind and gentle to threaten someone. I knew Sarah had a crush on me, but I didn't think it was to the point where she'd throw a jealousy fit as soon as I was with another woman.
It disappoints me to see her acting this way; I thought we were past that.
"Whatever you say. I'm done with this," I said, rolling my eyes before turning to leave, but she grabbed my arm.
"If you don't want to believe me, that's your problem, but I'm telling you, Matthew, there's something strange about that girl. You should stay on your guard," she said before letting go of my arm and going to collect her things to leave the bookstore.
I stood there for a moment, feeling confused, before joining y/n.
"Is everything okay?" she asked, smiling.
"Yeah, ready to go?" I asked her, returning her smile, and she nodded.
Once the bookstore was closed, y/n and I hit the road before stopping at Central Park.
"Central Park, you couldn't have found a more cliché place," she said, chuckling once she removed her helmet.
"I thought it was the company that mattered, not the place," I said, pretending to be offended.
"Okay, don't start, Matt!" she said, pointing her finger at me, and I smiled.
"You know what, there's a pretty nice museum nearby. Let's go there," she suggested.
"So, no stroll in the park," I said, putting on a falsely sad face.
"We'll do that after your park stroll, idiot. Come on, follow me," she said, rolling her eyes.
We walked for a few minutes before finding ourselves in front of the museum she mentioned.
We entered and strolled around, observing the artworks. It was at this moment that I learned something new about y/n—she's been passionate about photography since she was a child.
We spent a good two hours in the museum, chatting about everything and anything. We almost forgot that lunchtime had long passed.
"Oh my God, it's 1:30 in the afternoon, and we still haven't eaten," she said, chuckling when she checked the time on her phone after leaving the museum.
"Really?" I asked, surprised, and she nodded.
"That's your fault; you talk way too much," I said, chuckling.
"Yeah, like you don't love that," she said, rolling her eyes.
"Are you hungry?" I asked her, smiling.
"A little, and you?" she said, looking me in the eyes.
"A bit," I replied, shrugging.
"Hmm..." she hummed thoughtfully, scanning the surroundings.
"Look, a hot dog stand!" she said excitedly, pointing at the stand before grabbing me by the arm and running towards it.
"And you thought strolling in Central Park was cliché, huh?" I teased once we arrived at the stand.
"Shut up," she said, smiling, before turning to the vendor.
"Two hot dogs, please!" she said cheerfully to the vendor.
"So, I don't even get to choose my meal?" I frowned.
"No, just be quiet and take what I give you!" she said with a smirk, and I chuckled.
"No ketchup!" she added to the vendor as he reached for the sauce compartment.
I hate ketchup, but I don't think I've ever told her that.
She grabbed the hot dogs and paid before I could say anything.
"Ugh, sorry, I hate ketchup, I didn't think to ask if you wanted any," she said, handing me my hot dog.
So it was just a coincidence? You and I probably have much more in common than I could have imagined...
The more time I spend with you, the harder it is for me to believe that you're not the literal definition of perfection, y/n.
"It's okay; I don't like ketchup either anyway," I said, smiling.
"Really??" she said, surprised.
"Yeah, I can't stand it," I said, chuckling.
"Or maybe you're just trying to copy me, huh? I see what you're trying to do, Matty!" she said, narrowing her eyes before taking a bite of her hot dog.
Matty, so we're already at the nickname stage?
"Yeah, that must be it. Keep dreaming," I said, shaking my head and taking a bite of my hot dog.
We continued our little walk to the park.
"Can I be honest with you?" she said, turning to me.
"Go ahead, I'm listening," I replied.
"These hot dogs are really terrible," she said, grimacing, and I laughed.
"I agree," I replied, and she laughed too.
"But I really want to finish them; I hate wasting food!" she said, pouting like a little girl.
Y/n, if only you knew how much you softened my heart.
"It's alright, sweetheart; I'll finish it for you if you can't," I said, smiling.
"Matt, you're so cute, bro," she said, blushing before turning her head.
"Bro?" I chuckled. "That hurts."
"What were you hoping for?" she said, rolling her eyes. "That I'd call you baby?" she said, smiling.
"Okay, go ahead, mock me some more," I said.
"With pleasure, baby," she said with a smirk.
"You're not funny, y/n," I said, finishing my hot dog.
"Maybe, but you adore me anyway," she shrugged, offering me her hot dog for me to eat as agreed.
"I can't deny that," I replied, taking her hot dog.
We continued our walk, chatting about everything and nothing.
I wasn't usually talkative, but with her, everything was so effortless. I loved listening to her; she always had something interesting to say.
She was full of surprises, always having a different opinion or perspective on the world, which made me feel less alone.
"Oh, Matt, look, an ice cream stand!" she said, hopping.
"You're such a child, y/n, you know that?" I chuckled.
"Yeah, I love life, sue me for it," she said, raising her hands sarcastically.
I shook my head before following her to the ice cream stand.
"Oh my god, they have rose-flavored ice cream, it's my favorite scent; you absolutely have to try it!" she said excitedly.
"I don't really feel like ice cream," I started to say before she cut me off to talk to the vendor.
"Two rose-flavored ice creams, please," she said, turning to me with a big smile.
I looked at her bewildered before bursting into laughter; she's completely insane, but I love it.
"Here you go," she said, handing me my ice cream before happily continuing to walk in the park.
How can she have so much energy and smile so much?
It's true; this girl was like a sun; she lit up every place she went.
And me, on the contrary, I felt like I was the moon next to her.
"So, how is it?" she said, smiling, referring to my ice cream.
"Delicious," I replied.
"See, I knew you'd like it," she said proudly.
"Oh, wait, you have some ice cream right there," she said, chuckling before approaching me.
Standing on tiptoes, she placed her hand on my cheek and used the finger of her other hand to wipe the ice cream from the corner of my mouth.
"Here," she said, looking into my eyes and offering me her finger with the ice cream to lick.
Her gaze and expression changed at that moment.
What are you playing at, y/n? Is this your way of making suggestive gestures towards me? If so, you have absolutely no idea the effect you're having on me right now.
I took her finger into my mouth without breaking eye contact, and she bit her lip.
I can't be imagining things; she's not as innocent as she pretends to be.
She then returned to standing normally on both feet before taking a bite of her ice cream, still looking me straight in the eyes.
Fuck, does it really take so little to get me hard?
"Mmmh, my favorite," she said, closing her eyes before turning around and starting to walk again as if nothing had happened.
Is that all? Are you going to leave me hanging like this?
If you only knew how much I dreamed of being in your ice cream's place right now, y/n...
From that moment on, it was difficult for me to focus on what she was saying. My mind was filled with ideas... of all kinds.
But regardless, we resumed our conversation, stopping on a bench to finish our ice creams.
"Fuck," she said, taking her phone to check the notification she had just received in the middle of our conversation.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
"It's my dad, he needs me for his charity gala next weekend," she said with a sigh.
"His charity gala?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's something my dad organizes every year. It's a big event where he invites his most influential friends to raise funds for cancer research," she replied.
"Oh, um, do you want me to drop you off?" I offered.
"I'm really sorry to cut our outing short like this," she said with a sad look.
"Hey, it's okay, don't worry about it. We can hang out again this week," I said, putting my hand on her back and smiling.
"You're the best," she said, hugging me, and we headed back towards my bike this time.
"Where do you want me to drop you?" I asked as I put on my helmet.
"Take me home, I need to pick up some stuff anyway," she said, putting on her helmet as well.
We got on my bike, and I started driving towards her place.
This time, she seemed to hold on to me a little tighter, as if she didn't want this moment to end.
Oh, so you'd do anything to not have to leave either?
Once we arrived at her apartment complex, I parked, and she got off, taking off her helmet.
"I really hate that I have to go. I wish I could stay with you," she said, looking down at the ground.
I took off my helmet before responding.
"Y/n, you have important things to do, and I'm not going anywhere. You'll come back to me when you have time," I said, placing my hands on her cheeks without thinking.
She looked up at me, and damn, how badly I wanted to kiss her.
Is that what I should do? She's not saying anything anymore, maybe that's what she's waiting for from me?
"Thank you, Matt," she said softly, smiling after several seconds of staring into each other's eyes without saying anything before stepping back and turning to go inside her place.
And I missed my chance again, what an idiot.
Next time, I promise you, y/n, I won't let my chance slip away.

It was like time stopped. You and Soobin both grew pale, mouths hanging open in pure shock. It was hard to wrap your head around what he had actually said.
Jungwon, a murderer? Sure, he was cold, sadistic, and harsh, but -  a murderer? He must’ve been a child when that happened. Without meaning to, your thoughts showed through a scowl on your face, causing Yeonjun to shoot daggers at you.
‘’ You don’t believe me? ‘’
You felt torn. Wanting to say yes but not feeling it to be true 100% yet. The logical side of your brain was screaming at you to find proof of it; maybe he thought wrong, maybe he had a personal vendetta against him that wasn’t at all connected to Jungwon murdering his friend.
When looking at Soobin, you realized he felt the same thing as you. Neither of you had met a murderer or witnessed a murder. It felt a bit too crazy for your small world. Yeonjun must’ve noticed you looking at his brother as his eyes shifted to him now as well. He probably saw the same expression on your face mirrored on Soobin’s face because he backed away looking even more offended and hurt than before.
‘’ Not even you believe me? ‘’
Soobin struggled to get his words out, ‘’ No, we- we believe you- ‘’ Yeonjun turned on his heel, catching him off guard. ‘’ Wait! ‘’
He didn’t turn back to him, he just walked out of the alley. The last thing Soobin managed to shout at him before he disappeared around the corner of the building was, ‘’ It’s just a lot to take in, ‘’ earning a tired scoff from Yeonjun.
When it was just the two of you, silence fell over you like a veil. It was obvious that you both were deep in thought and troubled over the same thing. Minutes passed, during which you spent going back and forth inside your head.
You remembered the coldness you felt, the silent fear the others seemed to have of him, and the sadistic smirks he’d wear on his face when he was torturing you. But, most notably were his eyes. Sharp, at times carrying many different emotions; most commonly, however, rage and emptiness. Amusement in pain but unfazed in happiness.
If anyone out of the group was capable of murder it would be him, that much you knew. So maybe it was true after all no matter how hard it was to digest. You started to feel some guilt due to how it came off to Yeonjun, so you hurried to say something.
‘’ What do we do now? ‘’
‘’ You believe him, right? ‘’
You took some time to answer which made Soobin smile knowingly. It seemed that over the last few seconds, he too had snapped out of the trance; he looked a lot more confident, no longer pondering distraughtly.
‘’ We could just double-check they went to the same school before. ‘’
Soobin agreed, sending Yeonjun a quick text. A weird feeling washed over you while you were standing there and looking over his shoulder. Your skin felt like it was crawling, and the hairs on your neck raised.
‘’ Soobin? ‘’ your voice came out in a terrified whisper making his eyes widen.
‘’ What’s wrong? ‘’
‘’ Is someone watching us? ‘’
Surprise replaced his worried expression, ‘’ What do you mean? ‘’
When a few seconds had passed and he could tell you were still serious, he chivalrously was the one who dared to look around despite his heart beating faster in dread. You noticed his head had stopped turning, and you allowed your eyes to follow where he was looking; it was the staircase.
Jungwon was staring right at Soobin, gaze diverting to you when he noticed you were looking too. A small smile tugged at his lips, and then he walked out of your sight causing both you and Soobin to scramble to look around the wall - but, nothing. He had disappeared similarly to Yeonjun, leaving you and Soobin feeling just as puzzled.
*******
You decided to go home, feeling like you needed some space to think about your next course of action, as well as what to say to Yeonjun. Soobin had expressed concerns of him acting out impulsively, blinded by rage since he had finally found the person he’d been looking for, for years.
He said he would go check on his older brother and send you updates. Without Yeonjun, the plan would probably be paused for some time until he felt a bit better or you and Soobin came up with a plan on your own. Thankfully the small break gave you some room to relax for the first time in a long time.
Your dad barely reacted when you came home. He hadn’t even sent a text asking what time you would be there after school. His eyes were glued to the bright screen in the darkness like usual, giving a short ‘ hey ‘ when he heard your movements.
You didn’t respond, unsure if he would even notice if you did or not. But he did and it caused his tired head to look up, a sad expression forming on his face as he realized he had once again lost track of time.
The door to your bedroom was slammed unintentionally due to your pent-up anger and frustrations from the long day. You laid down, muscles relaxing under the softness of the bed.
After barely a few minutes of serene quietness, the phone started ringing loudly. You groaned, rolled over, and then picked it up.
‘’ Soobin? ‘’
‘’ Hey, did I disturb you? ‘’
‘’ It’s okay, what’s up? ‘’
‘’ Yeonjun won’t come out of his room so I’m not really sure what to do. He didn’t respond to me either, except for sliding a photo under the door. Y/n…he really went to the same school as Jungwon. It was a class photo. ‘’
You hummed, ‘’ I thought so. If he transferred schools years before I got there, it would’ve been impossible for me to have known that. ‘’
‘’ Yeah, I guess that’s true. ‘’
‘’ Anything else? ‘’
‘’ He sent me some of the files and it has a lot of evidence on it. Mostly texts between employees, there are about a thousand more he has to go through. Some had videos and photos though, of employees being beaten by the boss and higher-ups of the company.‘’
‘’ Holy shit, ‘’ you bit your lip to stop your volume from getting too loud in a moment of excitement, ‘’ Do you think this is enough? ‘’
‘’ Maybe. But we never know what kind of lawyers they have. They could claim it’s A.I or deepfake and not real at all. ‘’
‘’ As long as we try it’s okay. Then we know we have tried everything.‘’
‘’ Of course. You might find some things at Jay’s house too. ‘’
‘’ Jay’s house? ‘’ your forehead furrowed in confusion, you didn’t remember him mentioning anything about that before.
‘’ I have a…spontaneous plan. Wanna come over? ‘’
*******
‘’ It’s a long shot, ‘’ you hesitantly said.
‘’ Better to try than not trying at all. ‘’
A small smile shot to your lips, ‘’ Wow, look at you becoming so wise.‘’
He blushed and whined at the teasing, hiding his face in his hands which made him look adorable in your eyes; a small laugh slipped out of you. He waved with one hand, gesturing to the phone.
‘’ Okay, okay I will text him. ‘’
5:36 pm
You: Hey, can I come over?
You and Soobin both looked at each other after you sent the first text, thinking of the same thing - it was too vague and might make him text the other guys immediately. Soobin hurried to take the phone from you, becoming serious again.
You: I feel more comfortable around you than the others, they’re a lot meaner, I think you’re a bit nicer to me :)
‘’ Is that good enough? ‘’
‘’ If he’s selfish and I guess…horny? ‘’
You gasped, ‘’ Soobin! ‘’
‘’ What? He’s a guy after all…’’ he trailed off, quickly speeding up when his ears started to turn red this time. ‘’ He’d probably happily take the chance to be alone with you. Especially given how strict Jungwon seems to be with them. ‘’
You nodded. That seemed pretty plausible. If Jungwon was always adamant they never met up or acted alone with you in fear of the group collapsing due to jealousy and conflict, that was a very smart way to make sure just that would happen.
Everyone is more vulnerable alone after all.
5:37 pm
Jay: Why, is something wrong?
You took the phone back but glanced at Soobin, wanting to get advice on what to write. As you started typing, he looked at you reassuringly so you sent it.
You: I just feel really sad and depressed, my mom has been in the hospital for so long. I don’t know what to do. Maybe I need to vent a bit. I know it’s stupid, but I really don’t have anyone else. Is it okay if I come over?
‘’ If he says yes to that, then he’s a lot more stupid than I thought. ‘’
Soobin smiled somberly to himself, ‘’ Or he’s just a man who is in love. ‘’
You shook your body jokingly as if you felt a physical sensation like goosebumps at that thought.
‘’ I get that. ‘’
‘’ You do? ‘’
He nodded and his mouth opened but then closed again as he wasn’t sure what to say. Now it was your turn for your face to heat up, you cleared your throat and turned your head discreetly away from him. Soobin didn’t notice, he was too busy beating himself up over not being able to say what he wanted to.
Jay: Okay, you can come over for a bit. I’ll send you my address.
‘’ Yes! ‘’ you threw up a balled fist and cheered victoriously.
‘’ It worked? ‘’
‘’ Yeah, thank god. I don’t know how else we would’ve gotten the proof. ‘’
Soobin chuckled, ‘’ Well you’re not sure if you are going to get that far yet. Don’t get ahead of yourself. ‘’
‘’ Oh, right. Well, I feel optimistic though. ‘’
When you looked at him for a long time in silence with a smile, he raised his eyebrows playfully, ‘’ Because of me? ‘’
‘’ Yeah, you just never seem to give up on me. Because of you being around, I know I won’t lose myself. ‘’
‘’ So you trust me again, fully? ‘’
You nodded without hesitation.
‘’ You know this. I don’t think you could make me change my mind again. You have proved yourself and helped me many, many times. ‘’
A genuine grin flashed across his face, ‘’ You better get going then, we have a plan to follow.‘’
*******
On the way to Jay’s house, something unexpected happened. The taxi driver let you off somewhere near Jungwon’s house, telling you he wasn’t allowed to go further up the hill due to the status of the man living there.
When you started walking the long and tiresome walk up - as you passed by the familiar mansion a girl kicked the door open and began coming towards you. You were about to start running in fear until you saw that it was Yena.
‘’ Yena? ‘’
You went up to the iron bars and tried tugging on the gate, but it was locked.
‘’ I can’t get out. They’ve locked me in here. ‘’
‘’ What? Why would they do that? ‘’
She hesitated for a moment, turning her head back a few times to make sure no one had followed her out there.
‘’ They found out I’m helping you. ‘’
‘’ I’ll get you out! ‘’
‘’ If Jungwon sees you here he might take the opportunity to lock you in here too. ‘’
You listened to what she said and decided texting Soobin to help might be the smartest plan of action here. Jay was already waiting for you to come to his house and might get suspicious if it took you too long.
While taking out the phone and sending a text to Soobin, Yena watched you in silence. Unknown to you, she was having an internal conflict about whether to tell you the full truth or not. She wasn’t sure how to tell you in a way that would make you give the reaction she wanted - because even if she said it as well as she could, there was still no way to tell how you would react.
All she knew was that she couldn’t stand another minute inside that place. The horror-like images flashed inside her head, causing her to feel stress flare up.
‘’ I’ll be back soon, I promise. I’m going to Jay’s house but it won’t be for long. Soobin’s picking me up and then we can all leave, ‘’ you started backing away from the fence, just as a text from Jay came through asking where you were.
‘’ No! Please, you can’t leave me here! ‘’ she wailed.
The sudden switch made you confused. She had been pretty okay just a moment before.
‘’ Yena, what’s going on? ‘’
She didn’t answer, it instead made her more hysteric. Her eyes widened, to the point you could see much of the whites in them; but in her panicked state there was still begging there, desperation and fear.
The phone you were holding started ringing, and like Yena you felt panicked. In a moment, you made up your mind to leave, otherwise, it could worsen the situation for the both of you - you’d come back later for her, you promised her after all.
You answered the phone, ‘’ Yes. I’m just walking up the hill, ‘’ and turned your back on her.
Yena screamed louder, with all of the energy she had left in her. The pain in her voice sounded so raw, it forced you to close your eyes so you could gather yourself. You knew that she was just acting that way because she was scared, she wasn’t being very rational. It didn’t matter if you saved her then or came back a little later. You doubted they would kill her in that short time span, or hurt her very badly too.
‘’ Please…’’ her voice trailed off, the sobs turning into hiccups.
You turned, feeling too bad to leave her there now. But you ended up turning back almost as quickly again and ran up the hill. Yena’s crying had made someone come out of the front door and they were approaching the gate with hasty steps.
‘’ I’ll be back, ‘’ you shouted over your shoulder.
With great determination, you made it up the steep hill after running and found yourself outside the gates of the largest house you had ever seen. It was the house furthest away from the others and at the very top.
Although Jungwon’s house was big, it was nothing in comparison to this, a house fit for a mayor and businessman. You felt slightly intimidated by its size, even more so when spotting all the guards both on the other side of the gate and outside it.
The ones closest started moving towards you. You were scared that Jay hadn’t told them you were coming so they’d arrest you, labeling you as some crazy fan or weird journalist. But when they stood right in front of you, they stopped.
‘’ Miss, y/n? ‘’
‘’ Yes, ‘’ you hesitantly said.
He said something through the in-ear he had in before he and the others walked behind you. The gates opened, not even a single squeak from them.
You looked back since you felt a bit awkward and the guards gestured for you to go in so while starting to walk, you took the time to look at everything. It was embarrassing to admit you were in awe, and when small gasps left your mouth you prayed that Jay wasn’t close enough to witness your childlike fascination at a rich person’s house. If he did, he would definitely tease you for it.
‘’ Y/n, ‘’ you tensed up.
Looking around, you quickly noticed he was standing on the balcony right above where you were. When your eyes met, he smiled and then disappeared, appearing through the French doors below in under a minute.
‘’ You can leave us, ‘’ he said to the guards who looked hesitant before eventually retreating somewhere behind you.
‘’ Let’s go, ‘’ Jay said.
He didn’t wait for you to follow him, so you had to hurry to keep up to not get lost in the big house. You went up the same staircase he had likely come down from, but didn’t go into the same room. He kept walking down the corridor all the way to the end where a big round room was.
‘’ Is this your room? ‘’
‘’ Yeah. Do you like it? ‘’
It was a big room with round windows on the wall furthest away facing the courtyard you had seen when coming in through the gates. A big bed was in the middle and the room was very clean, you could tell almost immediately that a wealthy person lived there.
He laid down on the bed, propping his chin up with his outstretched arm, and watched you as you walked around the room. You had no idea how you’d play this off, it was decided on short notice because Soobin believed you should still continue acting quickly despite missing Yeonjun by your side.
He reasoned that they seemed to have put their guard down around you, which is something you have told him before as well. So if you were to get caught, maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as it would’ve been a few weeks or months ago.
You almost slipped up when Jay moved and tapped the bed, gesturing for you to come over. You were very close to forgetting the reason you told him you were there and cursing at him. Thankfully you caught yourself just in time, but walking over to him still took some force.
You had to turn your head when you felt him moving around you so you two were spooning, not wanting to risk any true feelings appearing on your face and be visible to him.
‘’ How are you doing? ‘’
He didn’t sound as soft, gentle, or empathetic as someone like Sunoo or even Jake would’ve, so you weren’t sure why he had agreed to do this. He wasn’t the most affectionate out of the group, or the kindest - but didn’t react when you had called him that in your text?
‘’ A bit better now. ‘’
‘’ You couldn’t call Soobin? ‘’
Jay chuckled when he felt your body stiffen.
‘’ All I meant is that you’re- what do I call you…friends? ‘’
You gulped down the weird anxiety you suddenly got from being asked about Soobin. Hoping he wasn’t angry, you quietly responded, ‘’ Yeah, friends. ‘’
His body vibrated as a low hum sounded from his throat. He didn’t sound very convinced. You wondered why he brought him up at all.
‘’ Thank you for doing this, I needed it, ‘’ you attempted to shift the conversation in another direction.
‘’ Always happy to, ‘’ he ominously mumbled into the crook of your neck.
You were pressed closer to him, and he sighed contentedly as his eyelids were getting heavier just by you being close. You noticed this by the way he slowly relaxed, his head drooping into your hair.
Carefully you slid out of his hold, thinking it was a lot easier than what you had expected. Originally you were just going to say you had to go to the bathroom, but now - if he didn’t wake up, he maybe wouldn’t even have noticed you were gone at all.
It took a great deal of concentration to tiptoe soundlessly over the floor and then close the door behind you. Being so scared that it would make a noise, you opted for leaving it half-open before continuing down the hallway.
It was deadly quiet, amplifying your heart beating wildly. When you peeked around the corner and didn’t see anyone you continued tiptoeing to the closest door, it was a bedroom so you closed it again. Turning around and seeing about a dozen identical rooms you decided none of them were likely to be an office.
So you were forced to leave the corridor of safety where you knew no danger was lurking; instead walking down the stairs while crouched so you could make sure no guards were watching.
Then you sprinted towards the other side where a small corridor led into a large kitchen. No one was there either, you suspected it was because the dad was in the city and the mom was probably out working too. Or rather, you hoped that was the case as you ventured through the kitchen.
You made it safely through that too, finding yourself in the living room now, a very open space with many windows facing the courtyard. Not wanting to risk getting caught you kept walking. Most of the guards were stationed by the gate as they had been before, but some stood near the doors with their backs turned. Any unusual movements or noises and you could bet their necks would be snapping around.
Because of that, you would hide at the slightest of indicator that one of them might look into the house. First, you hid behind the walls, but the closer you got to a large room that had an unusual door behind it, the fewer places you had to hide.
The door you had seen that caught your attention from far away, was a large oak door with some letters engraved on it. A small round staircase led up to it, making it stand out clearly against everything else around.
It was deserted around the door too, but you felt scared that there was a small possibility the mayor was inside. Maybe he hadn’t gone to his office in the city on this particular day. If you knew your luck, that would be the case.
Step by step you made your way there anyway since you had made it thus far. When you stood right outside, you took a quick look around again before pressing the door handle down and going inside. Darkness surrounded you immediately.
You let your fingers trace the wall for a light switch but decided not to press it, in fear of it alerting anyone to your position. Your phone was taken out instead, the light from it only making the atmosphere creepier than it already was.
Bookshelves seemed to cover almost every single space the light shone on. It made you a little overwhelmed. The smartest move would probably be to check the desk. Nearing it, you realized there was a chance it was locked.
Just like you thought; the drawers at the old Victorian desk at the front had keyholes in them and they remained closed when you tried tugging on them.
When you gave up on the locked drawers, you instead walked to the bookshelves that were the closest; and you swear your heart stopped. The sound of footsteps just outside the door made you freeze in place, unable to move any limbs.
As the door swung open you were found like that. Cursing yourself for not snapping out of it and hiding in time, you tried to crawl under the desk even though it was way too late. You squinted, taking some time to get used to the bright lighting shining into the room.
‘’ What are you doing? ‘’
A chill ran down your spine at the sound of the familiar voice. Footsteps started again and stopped right at the desk. The shoes of Jay came into your view. He crouched down slowly and sighed, tilting his head and making you feel embarrassed - he was kind of looking at you like a disappointed father who had discovered you playing where you weren’t supposed to.
His hand caressed your cheek, he could tell you had started trembling out of fear of what he might do to you. Perfectly calm, he very smoothly pulled on your leg and managed to drag you out almost entirely from under the desk.
‘’ Get up. ‘’
‘’ W-where are you taking me? ‘’ you said, licking your dry and bloody lips.
Jay ticked his tongue and lowered his head, looking up at you through his bangs. You could tell his patience which had been there just a few seconds ago was running out by his narrowed eyes glaring up at you, so you scrambled to your feet.
You watched curiously as he went to the bookshelf and unlocked the compartment at the bottom that you hadn’t even noticed. He had a few folders in his hands when he faced you again.
‘’ Were you looking for these? ‘’
‘’ I- no. ‘’
An amused smile ghosted over his lips, ‘’ I think you were. ‘’
‘’ No, ‘’ you mumbled.
‘’ Do you want it? ‘’
‘’ No. ‘’
‘’ No? ‘’ he raised one of his eyebrows, ‘’ You can have it, all yours. ‘’
You stared at him in bewilderment. What was he talking about? Was he just trying to taunt you? The failed attempt being thrown in your face was incredibly uncomfortable, you twisted in your spot on the floor, avoiding his hawk-like eyes watching your every move - predicting your next move and relishing in your pain.
‘’ Why? ‘’ your genuinely shocked voice finally made him give into the smile that had wanted to spread for a long time. He was always right.
‘’ I’m just being nice. ‘’
‘’ No catch? ‘’
He nodded, pursing his lips.
‘’ No catch. ‘’
‘’ Liar, there’s always a catch. ‘’
‘’ Are you going to take it or not? ‘’
‘’ I don’t even know what it is, ‘’ you finally realized.
‘’ Everything you need is in there. ‘’
‘’ So why are you giving it to me? ‘’
‘’ Because no matter how hard you try, ‘’ his smile turned sinister, ‘’ you will never be able to do anything with it. ‘’
*******
6:15 pm
You: Soobin, I have the files. Please come pick me up.
Cousin: okay
Cousin: I’ll be there soon, stand in a place where they can’t see you
You did as you were told, pushing back into the big bushes that covered the hill up to Jay’s house. It was uncomfortable; not only itchy, but the branches were spiky and would be sure to leave traces behind afterward given that they were digging into your skin.
Jungwon’s house was near, you could see the gates if you turned your head. You did so out of curiosity in your boredom and restlessness of waiting for Soobin to come. Despite being meters away from the main gate you could still spot a phone lying in the grass. Yena was nowhere to be seen.
You weren’t sure why, but you felt like something was wrong. They could’ve done something to her if they had spotted her talking to you outside, even if you were almost certain not enough time would pass for that to happen. You bit your lip anxiously while you raked your brain on what to do - go over there and investigate or stay in the bush and wait for Soobin?
Soobin’s car came into view just as you had made a run for the gate, leaving your poor classmate looking back at you confusedly. He thought you were being chased, so in a moment of panic, he reversed to the gate and rolled down the window.
‘’ Y/n! Get in! ‘’
‘’ Hold on, ‘’ you said back, not ready to give up and go since you had gone through the trouble of fitting your hand through the bars now.
‘’ Oh, ‘’ he mumbled to himself, scratching the back of his neck.
You pushed your whole face against the bars and tried your hardest to reach the phone with your fingertips. When Soobin saw you struggling he came out of the car and tried as well. His arm was thicker but way longer; somehow he managed to squeeze through and just by a millimeter his fingers carefully nudged the phone closer.
You helped him pull out his arm which was red with marks, ‘’ We have to leave now. ‘’
One look at the phone was all you needed to know it wasn’t a good idea to stay there any longer. The longer you stayed, the higher the chances of them spotting you were.
‘’ What did you see? ‘’ Soobin asked in the car.
You cleared your throat, feeling a lump forming. It had been confusing, making you end up with more questions than answers.
‘’ It was a screenshot of a text between Sunghoon and Yena. ‘’
That piqued Soobin’s interest, he almost turned his whole head away from the steering wheel.
‘’ What? ‘’
You let out an exasperated sigh, looking out of the window, ‘’ It was Yena begging him to leave the group. ‘’
He couldn’t believe what you were saying, and neither could you really, ‘’ Why the hell was Yena talking to Sunghoon? ‘’

When We Are Together - Matty Healy
Tumblr media
Summary: In which Matty falls in love with you in stages his entire life. He knows everything is better when you're together but the two of you are oblivious to the fact you're in love with each other.
Warnings: Swearing. A small section of smut in flashback 2. Unfortunately it's not with Matty. It's with George because I am a whore. Mentions of The S*n. Mentions of Matty going to rehab, obviously we don't know all the personal details apart from the fact there was an intervention after the ilwys era ended and he went and now he's in recovery.
Author's Note: Self proclaimed 'Not a Matty girl' just wrote 12K lol this has legit taken so long cause I procrastinate but hope you like it!  Really fucking long because I tend to let my mind wonder, I don't even know if this is any good but I'm trying to get better. I thought the concept was cute anyway. So enjoy! Let me know what you guys think and if you liked it x
Word Count: 12K
Your life had always been surrounded by the boys. So many moments in your life that their fans could only ever dream of knowing about or being involved in but you didn’t know any different, it was just your life. You had no choice in the matter when your brother and best friend in the entire world was the bassist in the band. That’s right; Ross MacDonald was your big brother and you seemed to be somewhat of a legend amongst their hardcore fanbase yourself for putting up with their antics for as long as you had! Not that you really had a choice when you were tied to them via blood but they had also hired you as their personal assistant so you could follow them around the world and so none of them had to part from you for too long.
You had personal relationships with all of the band, not just your brother who genuinely was the best big brother you could have ever asked for. He was your best friend and had been since the moment you were born. Sometimes it irritated the others how annoying the two of you were when you both got into silly moods, with all your inside jokes and side looks that nobody else understood. Especially Matty who always wanted in on the joke. But Ross was a ride or die kind of guy and you were the same. If it came down to it you would fight over who took the first bullet.
Adam Hann. Adam truly was an angel of man sent to earth to be your bestie and you don’t think you could love him anymore if you could. Someone you could geek out about The Office with on the tour bus and who brought you coffee when he could see you needed a pick me up. The most level headed of the boys, you know he’ll always be on your side. Someone who’s come to your rescue during many nights out both pre and post fame and took your hand, pretended to be your boyfriend with no questions asked and got you away from creeps more times than you would have liked. You couldn’t be more grateful for a selfless friend like Adam Hann.
George Daniel. Your ‘little’ Georgie had been in your form at school, so apart from your brother until you were much older and started hanging out with them more, you had spent the most time with him. So it’s fair to say that the pair of you were close. So close that you lived with him and Matty in your early twenties. Even a small indiscretion on his 23rd birthday much to your brother’s dismay didn’t change the course of your relationship. Now that you were both thirty two and you were still working for him, clearly the two of you didn’t care that you had seen each other naked. If anything your night together all those many moons ago had brought you closer together. You would trust him with your life.
Then there was Matty. Matty was something else. If you asked his fans, depending on if you were asking old or new fans. He was something else in two senses of the word. To you he was just Matthew. Your big brother’s best friend who was a bit of a weird kid, transitioned into a somewhat cool teenager who you had a bit of a crush on when you were seventeen, to the most annoying person you’ve ever laid eyes on. But also he was your best friend. An old married couple is what George labeled you both and he wasn’t wrong, the pair of you did have a bit of a domestic life together when he wasn’t busy being a rockstar.
I think the fans would be shocked to find out he likes doing the mundane things in life like doing the food shop with you and fighting at the tills that it was his turn to scan his club card. Or walking the dog, drinking a good cup of tea at his Mam’s house or cooking with you over a glass of wine with Donny Hathaway playing in the background on the record player.
He had done so much for you over the years and you always thought it was just Matty being Matty and looking out for you. Hiring you as the band’s assistant, so you could see the world with them so you weren’t stuck in a stuffy office job in England. Even though you had graduated from uni with a first class degree in photography. Moving you into his home when you broke up with your long term boyfriend in 2020 so you weren’t wallowing in self pity. It was probably then, that George cemented your “marriage status” because you did do everything together and apparently you had been oblivious your entire friendship until now.
It was in this moment in Belfast on the last night of the UK tour that your head swimming with all of the moments in your life that led you to here with Matty, tears brimmed with tears. That you realised that it was him the entire time.
April 2007
You pulled the front of the white tank top you were wearing down, allowing the frilly cups of your red bra to peek out the top. Your top tucked into a short black mini skirt, paired with a big chunky belt and hoop earrings and some wedged sandals on your feet. You actually felt good about yourself for once! You, Sarah and Rebecca ready to get drunk and dance your asses off with all of your friends as you celebrated Matty’s birthday.
Matty’s 18th birthday party was being held at his house. A classic Healy house party yet you still wondered how Denise and Tim were somehow trusting him enough for the night to not burn the house down so he could celebrate his birthday with his friends without parental supervision.
You of course had yet to turn eighteen, as had your brother who was only eleven months older than you. So you turned to your lord and saviour Adam Hann who went to the local off license and bought you a pack of Bacardi Breezers for the party.
When the three of you arrived; you immediately got swept away by your other school friends, giggling at the thought of getting drunk with all your friends and making out with boys your brother would definitely disapprove of was the motivation you needed to open your first drink of the evening.
It was after a few drinks, definitely too many shots of whatever George had proclaimed Matty’s Dad’s had left for the birthday boy. You were starting to feel the effects of the alcohol you had drunk that evening when you spotted Max. Tall, brunette, curly hair and a killer watt smile that made you weak at the knees, talking to George.
Silent motivation from Phoebe as she ruffled her hands through your hair and pushing your tits into a good position as Sarah dabbed on some more lip gloss before pushing you in the direction of the boys, slapping your ass with a quick “Go get him tiger!”
Shooting her a grin over your shoulder, you strutted on over to where George and Max stood clutching their beer bottles as they conversed about god knows what. Hoping to catch his attention, you threw on your best smile as you stopped in front of the two of them.
“Hello boys!” You beamed a the two of them, eyes lingering on Max a little longer. “Having a good night?”  You asked, twiddling the straw around your drink as you waited for their answer.
“Even better now you’re here gorgeous!”
Your heart fluttered for a moment. Max was flirting back.
“Your tits are looking mega tonight babe!”
George broke your eye contact with the tall brunette as your eyes flitted towards him. The blush flushing across your cheeks at George’s compliment, “Ohhh thanks G!”  You laughed awkwardly, catching his eyes fall to your tits once more just as Ross walked past the three of you.
“Dude! That’s my sister!” He punched him in the arm; a scowl on his face and immediately pulling you away with him and far away from the boys and into the crowd of people dancing in Denise and Tim’s living room.
“You’re no fun!”  You huffed.
“You can do a lot better than Max sis. Believe me! I’m just looking out for you.”
He smiled softly at you and you sighed, knowing you couldn’t ever stay mad at him. He knew you better than anyone else and always looked out for you no matter what. “Thanks bro.  I know. I’m just going to get some fresh air, it’s a bit stuffy in here.”
You sent him a smile, squeezing past him and all the other sweaty bodies to head out the sliding doors at the back of Matty’s kitchen. Letting out the breath you hadn’t realised you had been holding as the cool spring air brushed over your skin. Taking in the serenity of the night air, you didn’t realise anyone else was out there until you heard a cough causing you to snap your head towards the noise.
Matty was leaning up against the back wall, cigarette hanging from his lips.
“Alright birthday boy! What you doing out here by yourself?” You laughed lightly as you approached; leaning next to him as you took in the slightly solemn look on his face.
“Bit overwhelming in there. Thought I’d like the attention but there’s too many people. Half of them are just here to get drunk, they don’t care about me.” He laughed bitterly; blowing smoke into the air. “Anyway. What are you doing out here?”
“Just needed some air. It was a bit stuffy in there. Too many people.”
“Ahhh so we’re alike in our thinking.” Matty laughed. “Wish it was just you and the boys to be honest.” He mumbled, shuffling his feet.
“Hey. You know if you want we can have a do over. Come over to mine and Ross’ tomorrow. We’ll order pizza and watch True Romance. I’d hate for you to not look back fondly at your 18th.”  You smiled softly as you spoke.
“You’re brilliant.” Matty’s eyes bright as he looked at you. “I’d really like that. Thanks sweetheart.”  Matty shot you a genuine smile for the first time since you stepped outside.
A brief moment of silence settled across the two of you before Matty spoke again.
“You look incredible tonight.”
“Ohhh.” You looked down at your feet, unsure of how to take the compliment.
“Hey.” Matty lifted your chin up. “What’s all that about? You’re the most beautiful girl in the room.” He said earnestly; swiping at the apples of your cheeks and holding your jaw in his hands.
“Just didn’t think anyone could look past the fact I’m Ross’ sister. Nobody ever calls me beautiful.”
“Not even Josh? Didn’t you date him for nearly a year?”  Matty asked as you shook your head.
“Then he’s an idiot. You’re always the most beautiful girl in the room darling.”
“Matty.”
It came out a whisper as you both stared into each other’s brown eyes. Matty’s eyes dancing across your features, settling on your lips before looking back up and catching your gaze already on him. Matty leaned in, his face getting closer to your own as your mind started racing.
Did you want to kiss Matty? Kinda, yeah!
Should you kiss Matty? No, definitely not. Ross would kill the both of you.
Did you kiss Matty? Yes.
“We shouldn’t.”  You whispered, lips mere inches away from his own.
“But a birthday kiss is all I want this year.”
His words came out of a whisper, you didn’t say anything else just pushed your lips against his and allowed him to pull you closer as his mouth moved against the softness of your glossed lips. His hands moving from your face, dancing down the sides of your body and landing on your waist before he reluctantly pulled away, forehead resting against your own.
“You’re good at that.” He pecked your lips once more.
“Mmmm.”  You hummed; opening your eyes as Matty held you close. You quickly opened your mouth to say something and promptly shut it again when you caught the way Matty looked at you. “Fuck it!” You mumbled and slammed your lips back against his own.
The birthday boy now pushing you up against the wall, hands impossibly tight on your waist as he pulled you as physically close as possible. Your hands uprooting themselves in the hair at the back of his neck and tugging as you snogged him like your life depended on it. Like you weren’t pushed against the back of his kitchen wall in his garden, where any of your school friends could come out and catch you. Or worse; your brother but you didn’t care because the way Matty was kissing you made your whole body tingle.
Tugging his hair again as his tongue moved against your own. Matty groaned loudly; finally pulling away. “Fuck settle down! You know I can’t be found with you and if you keep doing that, someone is going hear us.” He groaned as he continued to pepper kisses up the side of your jaw.
“Hmmm, don’t feel like being murdered by my brother right now.”  You sighed; leaning back against the wall to take him in. Lips swollen and eyes bright as he watched you.
“I don’t want to be murdered by your brother either. Worst birthday ever!” He chuckled; hands dancing across your waist. “But that was my favourite birthday gift! Thanks sweetheart!” Matty grinned; watching you push yourself off the wall and smooth yourself down before heading back towards the house.
You paused for a moment; your foot on the last step, your hand lingering on the handle to the back door for a millisecond as you looked over your shoulder one last time at Matty who was just watching you. You sent him a soft smile, your hair falling in front of your face as you laughed before leaving him the dark as you rejoined the party.
A kiss with Matty who was your big brother’s (and your) annoying friend, someone you had an innocent schoolgirl crush on once he started becoming a tiny bit cool as the lead singer in their band. Something you didn’t think was an overly big deal, after all people kiss people they shouldn’t when they’re drunk all the time. Turns out it was the starting point of the trajectory of how your’s and Matty’s story begun.
March 2013
In the midst of releasing a series of EPs and gigging around the country and building up their hardcore fanbase. You had managed to get the boys all to just relax for a moment and celebrate the release of their Music for Cars EP and the fact that it was George’s 23rd birthday this weekend. And how did you celebrate? The only way you lot knew how, a dirty ole’ house party just like the good old days.
You had managed to squeeze God knows how many people in little flat you shared with George and Matty. As far as flatmate’s go, they weren’t all that bad. You had moved in with them straight after university so you had definitely had worse.
You had just downed what you believe was your fifth vodka shot of the evening and decided you needed to pace yourself a bit more if you weren’t going to stumble into your room and pass out any time soon. So upon spotting Ross, you wondered over to your brother who was sat talking to Hann; wiggling your way in between the two of them with a giggle. Ross automatically lifting his arm for you to slip under as you nursed the rest of your wine at a slower pace until your glass was empty.
After your head stopped spinning a sufficient amount, you found yourself milling about the flat and smuggling yourself into Matty’s embrace as he poured you another glass.
“Enjoying yourself sweetheart?”
“Mmm. Have you see the birthday boy?” You felt Matty’s lips pressed to the top of your head as you asked.
“You leaving me already?”  He chuckled. “Think he popped out the back for a cig.”
He motioned towards the back door. You immediately unravelled yourself from him, a kiss smacked against his cheek, catching the corner of his mouth. Not that you noticed in your flurry but Matty did. The longing for the feeling of the two of you had shared in his back garden prickling at his chest as his eyes locked onto your retreating figure as you rushed through the throng of remaining people in the kitchen and exiting the flat.
Matty was right. You found George smoking out the back in your little tiny back garden under the dying glimmer of your shit security light that was attached to your back wall. Turning in your direction at the sound of the back door shutting, George automatically opened his arms for you to slot into his side, arm hung loosely over your shoulder as he let out the smoke he had just inhaled. Wordlessly placing the cig in your mouth to let you take a drag yourself, you passed it back and forth between the two of you in silence.
Stubbing the end into the brick, George dropped it into the bucket of dirty filters before breaking the silence. “God what time is it?”  He asked as you watched him push the balls of his hand into his eyes.
“Nearly 2am! Why you need to go to bed Grandad?!”
“Fucking maybe?! How many people are left?” The now blonde motioned towards the house.
“Only a few. Heard Sally talk about some of them heading into town on the way out and Luke and Helen have to be up early so they left nearly a hour ago. Just the band and about three other now. You ready to head in birthday boy?” You asked; holding out your hand for him to take with a smirk.
With a silent nod George didn’t hesitate to grab onto your hand as you tried not to trip over the many plant pots that were littered across your garden path. “You given me my birthday present yet? I can’t remember?” You turned to look at the drummer. An amused look on your face because he had given you the brightest smile when he had opened the personalised drumsticks you had gotten him earlier. “Or are you my present? Wait is this an ambush?” George gasped. “Please be an ambush!” He grinned at you.
“You should be so lucky!”  You scoffed; before shooting him a smirk as you opened the the kitchen door.
“Your tits look mega in that dress by the way!” His tone smug as he closed the kitchen door behind him. Your only response being the cackle that left your mouth as you left George to watch you walk away as you joined the rest of the band in the living room.
Lucky indeed because once the remaining guests left about twenty minutes later. You had snuck into George’s room to say good night and wish him a happy birthday and it’s how you found yourself currently with aching arms. As they were locked either side of George’s knees, his hands tight on your waist as you bounced on his cock.
You weren’t sure how long you had been in this position. You do know he had already made you cum twice though. Once on his tongue and once with his fingers but my God were you spiralling towards your third. The thick drag of his cock between your legs as he stretched you out was delicious but you needed to cum quick because you weren’t sure how long you could stay in this position for.
“Jesus Christ! So fucking good George!” You wailed; as George’s thumb swiped through the slick between your legs and rubbing at your clit.
“Feel good baby?”
“Yes. Shit! So good!” You panted. “Arms hurt though, fuck.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve got you.” He said; pulling you forward.
You fell forward at full speed; having to catch yourself on either side of his face to stop yourself from head butting him as his large hands moved from your hips to grab on to the globes of your ass before plowing up into your cunt so fast you saw stars dance under your eyelids. All you could do was shake and babble out a string of, “So good. So good. So good.” As George made you cum again.
Pulling out quickly. You had no time to recover as George flipped you over; face already in his pillows as he pushed back into you as he chased his own orgasm. The drag of his cock made you feel delirious at the speed in which he was fucking you back into the mattress.
“Fucking hell. You’re so good G! Yes! Yes! Yes!”  You screamed into the mattress, really not caring that your mutual best friend was on the other side of the wall.
His name fell from your lips like a chant. You hadn’t been fucked this good in forever, if at all and the fact it was your Georgie made your head spin.
“Come on baby. One more and I’ll give it to you.” He whispered in your ear, kissing the back of your shoulder before pulling you back on to his cock at rapid speed and sending you hurtling towards your fourth orgasm of the night (well morning) and George to fill you up with a satisfied groan.
Pulling out; your gentle giant rolled over, the pair of you catching your breath after fucking for a good hour. Rolling your head to the side to take him in, you pressed a kiss to the top of his shoulder with a chuckle. “Happy Birthday G!”
The now blonde let out a loud laugh as the pair of you snuggled into each other’s arms, like you would normally do under any other circumstances as George pressed a kiss to the side of your face. The temporary bliss shielding you both from the circumstances you’d have to face in the morning.
When you did manage to wake up the next morning, George was still fast asleep but his alarm clock read 10:12 and you knew you’d have to get up to tidy the flat because Matty certainly wouldn’t. As you looked around George’s room, you scrambled to find anything to hide your dignity as you moved around to clean up. As you pulled the shirt George was wearing the night before over your bare body, you didn’t have chance to register the other voices on the other side of the bedroom door.
“Where is she? She’s not answering her phone? She’s not in her room either.”
Matty didn’t answer Ross’s question, just grumbled into his arms before flinging himself down onto the dining room table dramatically.
“What’s the matter with you? You look like shit Healy!” Hann shoved his shoulder with a laugh as he threw himself on the sofa.
“Well you’d look like shit if you didn’t get any sleep cause you could hear George fucking at all hours of the night too.” Matty snapped at the two of them.
“Who was he shagging? I thought he wasn’t seeing that blonde anymore?”
Unfortunately for you, this was when you decided to make your grand appearance. Walking out of George’s room in nothing but his shirt and your knickers from the night before. The three of them silent as they took in your appearance.
Adam’s jaw slack as he looked on in shock as everything clicked into place before his very eyes.
Matty looked pained as he ran a hand through his curls before pushing himself up off the dining room table and shuffling into the kitchen, silently flicking the kettle on.
Ross looked angry. You could see it simmering in his eyes. The vein on his neck pulsing as he starred you down.
“I’ve been trying to ring you. Why were you in George’s room? ”
“I’ve been asleep. I’m here now aren’t I? Everything alright?” You brushed past him, trying to avoid talking about the inevitable. You hated when Ross was angry.
“Why do you have George’s shirt on?”
The two of you competed in a stare off. The both of you silent. Neither of you making the next move. If there was one thing you MacDonald siblings were, it was stubborn. Adam was watching on in anticipation. The only noise to be heard was Matty shuffling around the kitchen in the background. Your brother asked you again. Why was he asking you questions he didn’t want to know the answers to.
“Don’t make me say it bro.”  You sighed; annoyance flashing across his features.
“You slept with my best friend?”  Ross immediately started raising his voice. He already knew the answer, he didn’t need your confirmation. Not that he waited for it because he was already storming towards George’s room and right on queue, the door swung open to George just in his boxers.
“Ross. Stop!”  Your voice loud and going ignored.
“YOU SLEPT WITH MY SISTER?!”
Ross was seething. Hann was immediately by your side ready to intervene. Matty still off and away from the drama (which was very unlike him) that was about to unfold. He was unlawfully quiet but you couldn’t think about that when Ross was squaring off with George in the doorway to your rooms. The shouting sounded like you were under water as you zoned it out. This was a disaster. It was only when Hann touching your arm, whispering if they should intervene or not that brought you back to reality and had you storming right in between the two giants.
Pushing your way in between them. You stood with your back against George’s chest, a hand on your brothers and looking up at him with pleading eyes. “Ross. Please. Fighting George isn’t going to solve anything.”
“You slept. With my sister. What about fucking bro code?! Not cool dude!”
“It was me.” You shouted over the top of his booming voice, all four of them turning to look at you as you very rarely raised your voice. “It was me. I initiated it. So if you’re going to be mad at someone, shout at me because it’s my fault.”
“Babe you don’t have to defend me.” George touched your shoulder gently. “I know, we shouldn’t have done it.”
“Don’t touch her!” Ross zoned in on George’s hands upon your shoulders. He quickly lifted them up in surrender.
“George, we’re both consenting adults.” You addressed him before turning back to your brother. “I’m sorry but if you’re going to sulk about it, blame me because I started it. Ross you know I love you more than anything in this world but you can’t hate everyone that goes near me.”  You reached for his hand to give it a squeeze. “It was literally a one night stand. Promise it won’t happen again.”
Ross tried to pull his hand out of yours at your words, the vein in his neck twitching at the fucked up thought of his little sister casually sleeping around. “I’m not fucking happy about it. Fucking bro code dude.” He threw his hands up dramatically before turning towards the door. “I’m going for some fresh air.”
Ross quickly yanked open the front door, Hann hot on his tail, muttering something about checking on him which left you with Matty and George. The three of you standing in silence for a moment before George popped a kiss on top of your head and mumbling about a cig and heading out the back.
Matty disappeared again into the kitchen as you plonked yourself down at the dining room table with a groan. The ticking of the clock the only thing to be heard as the two of you were now the only ones left in your tiny flat. Sitting down next to you, Matty didn’t say anything. Just pushed a mug of coffee towards you and sipping his own.
“You don’t hate me do you? You haven’t said anything all morning.”
Matty took a sip of his coffee, a look of contemplation on his face as his eyes flitted towards you. The silence deafening and the thought of him being upset with you made your heart ache.
“You never offered me that on my birthday.”
You blinked rapidly as you stared at him. That was it. That’s what he chose to say.
Matty tried to say it with a joking lilt to his words. A smirk hiding behind his mug of coffee as you took in his words. But he knew deep down that there was a seriousness to it. It was true, you’ve never done anything with him other than when you kissed at his 18th, on his birthday or otherwise. Apart from one drunken weekend about two weeks later. He wasn’t sure why the thought made his heart pang. But it did. You opened your mouth to respond, quickly shutting it again as a flush rushed to your cheeks as you remembered the night in his garden five birthdays ago.
You let out a shaky laugh, not knowing what to say, shoving his shoulder playfully as you settled back into your chair, steaming coffee ready to be drunk.
“I don’t, you know.”
You turned you head to curly haired man beside you confused at what he was saying.
“I could never hate you.”
2014
You weren’t exactly sure where you were. What state you were in. What time it was or how much you and the band had to drink or what drugs Matty had taken tonight but you were fucking exhausted. You had been following your brother and your best friends around the world for the best part of just over a year, ‘acting’ like their personal assistant.
You were essentially a glorified baby sitter for these four man children. You wouldn’t change it for the world though, you got to travel the world with your best friends and take cool photography in the cool cities you visited but it was all catching up to you. All whilst they were busy being rockstars, some more than others but that was a different story.
You wanted nothing more than to be in the dingy little flat you shared with Matty and George in Manchester, catching up on washing, going down to your local Sainsbury’s and doing the weekly shop. Anything that didn’t require going to bed post 3am.
But you were currently in a club in Atlanta or was it Nashville? You didn’t know but what you did know was that you were bloody tired and the thought of travelling on the tour bus to the next state with a hangover was genuinely about to send you into a downward spiral if you didn’t get yourself back to the hotel asap.
Tucked neatly underneath Hann’s arm, his arm loosely hanging over your shoulder as you rested your head upon his shoulder, you prayed for your brother to round up the other two quicker than he was because you were actually asleep standing up at this point. You didn’t think it was possible to be asleep with your eyes open but you were positive at this precise moment in time it was currently happening.
Ross finally reappeared with George in tow but there was no Matty trailing behind the two of them. You groaned loudly as you clapped eyes on the two of them. Ross looked defeated, tiredness set his eyes too. George smirked when he heard your groans.
“Not the usual type of groans you make when you see me baby.”
“I’ll punch you so hard before Ross even gets the chance to if you don’t shut the fuck up Daniel's. Where’s Healy?”  You huffed, scowling at the boy in front of you.
“Mumbled something incoherent before refusing to leave.” Your brother grumbled.
“Give me two minutes.” You sent Hann a soft smile, before removing yourself from the bubble the two of you’d created at the end of the bar before pushing your way through all the sweaty bodies until you found him trying to chat up some blonde model type near the DJ booth.
Gently placing your hand around his bicep to get his attention, his curls whipped in your direction to see who was touching him. The first thing you noticed apart from the bright grin he was now sporting were his dilated pupils. So he had taken coke again, brilliant.
The sigh that left you so deeply rooted, you’re surprised he didn’t pick up on it. You hated the way it made him feel after the high was over.
“Hi darling! Hasn’t tonight been amazing? Wait where are the others? Can you believe your brother tried to make me to go back to the hotel? How sick was the gig tonight? Do you want to dance? Hey let me introduce you to…” He spoke at a hundred miles a hour as he spewed out utter nonsense, turning to realise the blonde he was chatting up was long gone.
You watched Matty’s shoulders sag, sad eyes now back on your own. “You fancy coming back with me? I’m dead on my feet and don’t really fancy nursing this inevitable hangover whilst being stuck on the tour bus for over six hours with you lot without at least four hours of decent sleep.”
“But I don’t want to go home yet.” He pouted.
“You come with me now, I’ll let you stay in my bunk tomorrow and I won’t complain about how clingy you are. Promise!”
“Like a sleepover?!”  Matty’s face lit up again.
“If you like, yeah!” You laughed at his childlike enthusiasm.
“Come on then, let’s go right now!” He started to drag you through the crowds. “I’m sharing with Ross tonight. I think he’d rather kill himself than watch you throw yourself at me!”
“I don’t throw myself at you.” You laughed at the frown he was pulling at you.
“It’s been known to happen Healy! I don’t mind though. My bunk tomorrow. Pinky promise.”
“Tomorrow.”  Matty sent you a soft smile; his pinky looping around your own before you started to tug him back towards the boys. “I just want to clarify, I don’t throw myself at you I just like lying on your tits is all!” He said, pulling a laugh out of you as you approached the rest of the band. Your brother already leading the troops out the club as he saw your approach, eager to get out of there and into bed.
You had currently been on the road from Atlanta to Raleigh, North Carolina for the past two hours and the hangover was showing no signs of disappearing. You had already watched half a season of The Office with Hann and had taken a half arsed nap with Ross but it was hard trying to sleep in the lounge, when your head was knocking off his shoulder every time the bus hit a pot hole.
Not to mention; if Matty made one more fucking sound, you were absolutely positive one of you was going to throw him out the window. It was a toss up between you and Hann, whoever got to him first I suppose. But he was getting on your last nerve. He was annoying at the best of times but there was something about his come down today that was irritating you to no fucking end. He so much as breathed too loudly and it was sending you spiralling into deep pit of annoyance.
You and the band were up back in the lounge area, some Adam Sandler movie playing quietly in the back ground that you were pretty sure none of them were even paying attention to. When Matty threw his phone across the bus, swearing something incoherent under his breath and it was the last straw.
Standing up abruptly, you managed to startle both Ross and Hann at the speed in which you moved. Pulling down George’s hoodie that you had stolen, so it covered more of your ass over the pair of gym shorts you had on. You turned back towards your brother and Adam, irritation etched across your features, scowling at Matty as you eyed him out of your peripheral, as he moped about next to George.
Just the image of him, made you want to roll your eyes.
“I’m going to my bunk before I fucking throttle him!”
You sent them both a sarcastic smile before storming off to your bunk. You can’t have been there ten minutes before your peace was interrupted by Matty who was peering around the curtain and asking if he can join you. You let out a big sigh before silently nodding your head as he lumbered on into the small space.
Immediately wrapping his arms around your waist; his head found home upon your chest just like it always did when he wanted a cuddle. Your hand that was wrapped around him made its way up to his head, where it settled in his curls, finger tips running across his scalp. The sound of his soft sighs automatically calming down the irritation that had been bubbling inside you since he had awoken this morning.
You weren’t entirely sure how long you had been lying there in silence. You only broke the silence when the coldness of Matty’s fingertips slipped underneath your hoodie to touch the warmth of your skin. His thumb rubbing circles across the softness of your hips as he snuggled further into your tits as one of his legs started pushing its way in between your own as he got comfy.
“Matty?” Your voice gentle as you tried to get his attention.
“You said you wouldn’t complain.” His voice muffled as he spoke into your covered breasts.
“Your fingers are fucking freezing that’s all.” Your chest vibrated with laughter.
“Sorry sweetheart” Matty moved the slightest bit, to kiss the underside of your chin before snuggling back into the warmth of your hoodie.
“I don’t mean to, you know?”  He whispered softly.
“What are you talking about?”
“I don’t mean to make you angry.”
His voice was barely above a whisper, that you nearly missed it.
“I’m not angry. Why would you think I’m angry at you?”
“You looked like you’d rather die than be anywhere near me before.” The hand that was weaving through his curls stopped. “I hated it. Hated that you looked at me like that. Made me feel even more shit than I already do.”
“Healy look at me.” Matty didn’t move a muscle, head still tucked underneath your chin, no effort in moving at all at your words.
“Babe. Look at me.” Your voice more stern, wiggling away from his grip so you could look down at him properly. “I could never hate you. Ever.” Your eyes flitted across his features, hardened by the late nights on tour and the hardcore partying. “I hate what that stuff does to you. I would never stop you from having fun but when you do that stuff, I hate how it makes you hate yourself the next day. I don’t want you doing something you’re going to regret because believe it or not Healy. I’m quite fond of you and I don’t think my heart could take it if something happened to you. Neither would my brother’s or Hann’s or George’s. We love you a stupid amount you know.”
Matty blinked at you as he took in your words, his brown eyes glossing over before shoving his face into you neck, the grip around your waist becoming impossibly tighter. Your body shaking as his vibrated against yours, soft sobs leaving him as he chanted; “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.” Over and over again.
All you could do was hold him closer and reassure him, that he had nothing to be sorry for and you were just looking out for him because anything else, you were afraid it might break you and you’d cry too. As your best friend was breaking his heart and wetting the hoodie you were wearing.
“Don’t apologise for having fun. I just want you to be careful. All I ever want is for you to be okay and sometimes what you do with all those people you don’t know isn’t good for you sweetheart.”
You squeezed him tighter, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. As he mumbled how “I’ll be better, I promise” into your neck, pressing multiple kisses in quick succession to just under the right side of your jaw before settling back into silence where the two of stay for some time.
The soft regular movement of Matty’s thumb rubbing circles on your hip stopped, his hand significantly less colder than they were before he had them up your hoodie, moved across the expanse of your lower back and rolling you over so you were now draped over him instead and tucked into his side.
“You know sometimes I feel the only time I might get better is when we are together. You ever feel like that?”
It was now your turn to nod silently, a soft hum leaving your mouth as you pressed a quick kiss into his skin as you settled into a slumber.
2017
You had been pottering about your flat most of the morning, doing a deep clean of the place before you were supposed to be heading to meet the boys for Sunday dinner. Your boyfriend of nearly a year Michael, once again opting out of spending time with you and your family, claiming he had better things to be doing that sitting about and listening to the boys talk about what they had been getting up to in the studio again.
Personally you think it was because George let slip last time Michael could actually be bothered to join you all for a drink, that he had slept with you in a drunken ramble, much to the dismay of your boyfriend, your brother and yourself. And Michael didn’t take too fondly to the fact you were still close with George after the confession.
You were in the middle of folding the last bit of the washing that you had dumped on your bed when your phone pinged with a text from Hann.
‘Did you get a letter in the post this week? x’
‘I get a lot of stuff in the post Ads! Off who? x’
‘Matty x’
The moment you saw his name, your heart got stuck in your throat. None of you had heard from him since he he had left, something to do with his recovery. So the thought of contact from him had you dropping your phone on the bed and rushing from your room, shouting at Michael about the post you had received this week. Only receiving a mumble from him about the fire place; had you dashing to the living room, where you rifled through the post sat on top of the mantelpiece.
There slotted in between this months Rolling Stone subscription and a local take away menu was a white envelope addressed to you.
A Barbados post mark sitting in the top right corner.
Dropping the rest of the mail on the coffee table, you rushed back to your bedroom, locking the door immediately before sitting at the edge of your bed and taking in Matty’s scrawl of a penmanship. Running your fingers over the ink; your mind flashed back to that day.
The day you realised he wasn’t okay.
How completely out of it he was as you watched him at their last festival gig of the iliwys tour cycle. How utterly miserable he looked as he threw himself about the stage, looking just the shadow of the man you knew and loved.
You knew something wasn’t right as you watched from the side of stage with their manager Jamie. George ever the professional, had even broke his concentration bubble to catch your eye several times during their festival set, worry set in his features.
The way your gentle giant walked straight up to you, stopped in front of you and just by the look in your eyes. Your face never one to hide your emotions. George wrapped his arm around you and without a single word, the pair of you knew you had to speak to the other boys about it. You needed to talk to him.
The night of the intervention. The way he screamed and shouted at you all. He admitted to using but he didn’t do it quietly. The way Ross stepped in front of you in defence when he swore at you. Hann’s hand wrapped tightly around your own, George’s hand squeezing your shoulder in support as your brown eyes glossed over as you took in the man in front of you. He wasn’t your Matty and you hated looking at him like this.
You didn’t want to look at him at all and it broke your heart.
Slipping your finger into the envelope you finally tore it open, slipping out several pages of paper. You weren’t sure how long you were holding them before you actually unfolded them but it felt like a lifetime of contemplating before you managed to finally take a deep breath and compose yourself enough to read his words.
‘Darling,
As part of my recovery, I’ve been tasked to write a letter to everyone I’ve hurt and yours is the last one I’ve got to write. Not because you mean the least to me. Quite the opposite. Yours has been the hardest to write. Harder than Gabby. My Mam, Dad & Louis & the boys because you mean the absolute world to me.
This is actually the third time I’ve attempted to write this. Admitting that I’ve hurt you is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. You know what I’m like, I’m a stubborn twat at the best of times but I needed to do this because you deserve this apology probably the most.
You’ve never once judged me and the fucked up things I do when I’m on one. Since we were kids you’ve stuck by my side, defended me when I really didn’t deserve it and loved me endlessly from the sidelines and I’ve definitely not deserved your love but you gave me it anyway.
Do you remember that time we were on tour in 2014 and I was fucked up on coke for god knows how many days in a row and you couldn’t even be in the same room as me that day on the bus when I was on that god awful come down on the way to North Carolina?
Yet you still didn’t say no when I selfishly came crawling to your bunk to interrupt your peace and quiet with my tail between my legs, asking to come lie with you. You could have told me to piss off but you didn’t, you let me squish myself into your bunk and your arms and let me sleep off my hangover in your arms without complaining once. I would have complained but you didn’t, you let me and my cold hands snake their way into your personal space like I hadn’t gotten on your last nerve just ten minutes prior.
I’m quite a selfish person. You my darling are the most selfless person I know and I don’t deserve the good grace you’ve given me time and time again. Especially seeing as I dragged you along for the ride and then you’ve had to babysit me because I can’t control myself when it comes to drugs and showing off because I want everyone to like me.
You could have taken the tough love route, told me I’m a big fuck up and judged me for my drug use and tried to get me to stop (which probably would have have had the opposite effect out of defiance) but you didn’t. You silently kept an eye on me and made sure I didn’t end up killing myself. Until I took it too far.
I’ve seen you look at me with distaste over the years. Yet nothing compares to the way you looked at me that day you guys staged your intervention. I didn’t think you guys had noticed. I thought me and Miss H had this great big secret going on and I didn’t want to let any of you guys in on it because it would ruin what we had.
Yet you know me better than anyone. You and George both just knew that day. Of course you did. You’re my best friends. But you don’t know how happy I am the four of you staged that intervention and told me I needed to get my shit together.
When I think about the way I lashed out at you. The way your big brown eyes that usually sparkle with mischief when we’re with each other, glossed over as you just stood and took it and didn’t even raise your voice at me once. I can feel the lump in my throat tighten as I write this.
I deserved it you know. I deserved whatever fury was bubbling inside you because I was a class A cunt that day! I’m truly surprised Ross didn’t knock my head off and I wouldn’t have blamed him either if he had done!
I’m just so glad you did something because the thought of losing every single one of you shatters my soul so much, I would cease to exist without you.
I could sit here and write down the list of all things I’m sorry for but physically we don’t have the time or enough paper! But you should know that I am.
I’m sorry.
For everything.
I’m doing okay. The best I’ve been in a long time. The only way being here might get better is if you were here too.
I don’t deserve your forgiveness. But I’m begging for it because the thought of you hating me and not being able to trust me anymore kills me.
You really an angel on this earth.
I don’t deserve you.
I love you.
Yours Matthew x
p.s I cannot wait to be reunited with your tits! I’ve missed them!
You let out a chortled laugh as you read through the last line of the letter. Your hands quickly making their way to your face as you wiped the tears that were streaming from your face. The cuffs of your hoodie wet from where you’ve tried to stop the flow of tears. Pressing the letter to your chest, you took a few deep breaths to try compose yourself before you left the confinements of your bedroom.
Hurriedly shoving the letter into your handbag, so there was no chance Michael could stumble across your letter. He didn’t like Matty as it was, you didn’t want to give him ammunition to say anything. You grabbed your car keys and rushed out of the house without a word to your boyfriend and heading straight to Hann’s.
2020
You had broken up with Michael.
The red flags should have been there from the start really. He always had less than nice words to say about you and your relationships with the boys. He didn’t have a lot of nice things to say in general but you were blinded by love and the man he was when you first met that you didn’t see the red flags being waved right in front of your face until your heart (and self confidence) were already broken.
Your brother didn’t like Michael, he thought there was something off about him from the off but you put it down to Ross doing his job as your big brother but his opinion didn’t waver once in the four years you were together. George never liked how possessive he was and the fact he became even more so and tried to stop you from speaking to him after he found out about your night together. Which just fyi happened three years prior to meeting him, so he (everyone) was flabbergasted as to why he was so bothered! Hann. Your sweet angel of a bestie had even voiced how he didn’t like him and he was never one to be rude which should have also been a clue you were dating a dickhead.
Then there was Matty. Matty hated him. The feelings were mutual. Michael had told you plenty of times over your four years together that he hated your best friend but he would never tell you why. Matty told you it was because ‘he was a twat who didn’t deserve you’. You were obliged to agree because that mother fucker cheated on you!
Multiple women across the last two years of your relationship.
To say you were stunned was an understatement yet it somehow made sense and fell into place so easily when you thought about it all. Yet that didn’t make it hurt any less. But a friend of yours sending you the evidence whilst you were on the last night of the UK tour was the final nail in the coffin that was your shitty relationship with him.
You weren’t sure who wanted to kill him more. Your brother? Matty? Or George? The three of them were raging amongst one another at their after party which should have been a celebration whilst Hann sat with his arms wrapped around you as you cried to him and Carly. You didn’t think anything would make you feel better apart from getting obliterated with your favourite people and forgetting about Michael and the impending doom that was about to be bestowed upon the entire world.
Matty was your saving grace.
Asked you to move in, without even hesitating. Naturally you said yes, sitting in your flat all by yourself whilst you cried over your douchebag of an ex during lockdown did not sound appealing to you. It was giving ‘Emma Pilssbury crying to Celine Dion in her car from Glee’ and you weren’t quite ready to hit that stage of your breakup depression just yet.
Two weeks turned into two months and then four months of lockdown but quite frankly you had never been happier. Living with Matty again, surprisingly was just as good the second time round if not easier. Except this time you weren’t poor, your kitchen roof wasn’t leaking and there was a 95% less drug taking which made your life a whole lot less stressful.
It was just easy with him. At some point whilst the world stood still, Matty and Tahliah broke up and then it really just was you two; doing your washing, fighting over who’s turn it was to use their club card during the weekly shop at Tesco and raising his (both of your’s) new dog, Mayhem.
The two of you had been getting ready to move into a studio tomorrow with George after four months of just the two of you playing house, the pair of them just itching to get back to work. You were aware that Matty had been writing already but you knew it would be full steam now Notes had been released and you wanted to make use of the time you had left just the two of you.
Only because you knew as soon as you got your hands on George. That was it! Not a chance Matty was getting any attention. You had missed your big friendly giant more than anything and you knew from your FaceTime with him last night whilst you couldn’t sleep that he was more than excited to see you too.
All three of you were sunbathing in the garden. Mayhem by your side as the two of you soaked up some much needed sun. The heatwave the UK was currently in the middle of was doing wonders for your skin. You had been lying in silence for the past thirty minutes, a book covering your face to block out the sun as you tried to read. Matty’s head in your lap as you presumed he was napping when you suddenly felt him turn over in your lap, now on his side and looking up at you.
Lifting the book ever so slightly, so you could peek underneath at him, you cocked an eyebrow as he watched you with a gentle gaze. “Yes?” Your tone rich with sarcasm as you stared back at him. “Anything actually going through that pretty head of yours Healy? What you thinking about?”
“Us.”
“Us?” You laughed. “What about us?”
“You remember my eighteenth birthday?”  He asked; peering up at you with a soft smile.
“The party?” Matty nodded. “I remember Ross stopping me from getting with Max! Remember him? I was gutted!”  You laughed. “Why?”
“You know that’s not what I meant?” Matty frowned slightly as he pouted at you.
“Of course I do.” You put your book down, your hands automatically reaching for what was left of his curls,“What about it?”
“You ever think about it?”
“Sometimes. Think we’ve done a fantastic job at keeping it from my brother! Especially with your big gob!”  You smiled down at him as you ran your hand through his curls gently.
“Funny!”  He sent a glare your way, causing you to laugh loudly at his attempt to be intimidating.
“What’s got you thinking about that kiss from a million years ago anyway?”
“Wanking material.” He somehow managed to say without cracking smile.
It was your turn to shoot him a glare at his crudeness. It wasn’t long though until he was grinning up at you from his place in your lap. You pushed his head away from you in fake annoyance. God you couldn’t stand him sometimes!
“Ohh come on darling. I hear you sometimes! We all do it, you’ve got to think of something!” Matty tried to lighten the mood.
“Yeah I think about G’s 23rd birthday.” You smirked. Your vibrator was good but it wasn’t George. You couldn’t remember the last time you had a good orgasm and thinking it might have been before Michael makes you want to cry. Your confession/kind of a joke caused the grin to fall from his face and you almost felt bad, knowing he doesn’t want to hear about the incredible night you had with George because if anyone asked him, he absolutely did not want to relive it.
“I’m joking!” Your hand reached for his curls again. “Seriously though, what’s got you reminiscing about it. It’s been a long time.”
“Just thinking about how much I love you is all.” His confession made you stop. “What would have happened if we’d said fuck it and we ended up together.”
“I don’t think Ross would have been too happy. You saw how mad he got about G!”  You laughed nervously as you thought about stopping your brother from knocking his band mate out.
“He’d have gotten over it.” Matty was now leaning up on his arms, leaning forward to press a light kiss to your bikini clad torso before pressing several kisses in quick succession up your stomach until he was hovering over your chest and looking down at your face. “If we were happy, he’d have been happy. You know he would have been.”
His actions made you hold your breath. It being strangely intimate and probably the most intimate you’d been since you were teenagers. You wondered if he was actually going to kiss you again but he just looked down at you fondly.
“You know I’d do anything for you right?”  You nodded. “You’re one of the only people who makes me truly happy.  I’d literally go too far just you have you near. I’d go blind just to see you!”
You rolled your eyes at the dramatics of his statement but the sweet sentiment made you smile, you reached up to hold the side of his face in your hands. Your thumb sweeping over the apple of his left cheek. The pair of you just basking in the warmth of the sun and each other. Unsure how long you hadn’t said anything, Matty broke the silence in the most Matty way.
“Literally anything you need. I’ve got you for life sweetheart. A cuppa? A joint? An orgasm? I’m your man!”
A chortle left your mouth as he cheekily beamed down at you, waiting for what he knew would be a somewhat sarcastic response. He didn’t realise he’d really set himself up for what you were about to say.
“Don’t worry I’m good. I’m seeing G tomorrow!”
The way his eyes narrowed at you made you cackle even louder as he finally jumped up off you, to walk back inside without another word. “I’m sorry!”  You laughed. “I promise not to shag George when I see him. I’m good with my vibrator I promise!”  You manage to sputter out through your laughter. “Stick the kettle on whilst you’re in there love.”  You shouted after him.
Matty threw you the middle finger over his shoulder which made you laugh even more as he went though the back door, Mayhem hot on his heels; knowing fine well he was going to put the kettle on and make you a brew just how you liked it because for as long as he can remember he’s never been able to say no to you and he didn’t think he’d ever will.
2023
The 1975 in Show and Concert was possibly your favourite tour that you’d been apart of with the boys. There was an accumulative of factors; the fact you weren’t the only girl on tour this time round, Carly had joined Adam with their son and Charli had come to as many shows as her own schedule permitted. You also had a little part to play at Matthew’s request (obviously!) donned in a white lab coat, you brought Matty a hot honey and lemon on stage every night and pottered about with the rest of the crew, making sure your brother and the rest of the band were all good before slipping off to watch the rest of the show from backstage.
Or it could have been that you and Matty were closer than ever. Ever since lockdown and the pair of you had been living together, everything seemed so simple that since restrictions were lifted, you just carried on living together. I think when George removed the last box of things from your old flat to take to Matty’s did it for him, that he just shook his head with a laugh.
“You guys really are an old married couple!” He chuckled; slamming the boot close and jumping in the car before you could get a word in edgeways.
He wasn’t wrong, you guys did essentially everything together apart from have sex. Not that you hadn’t thought about it. Somewhere between moving into the studio with him and George and then your brother and Hann joining them to start recording their fifth studio album. You hadn’t shagged anyone in over a year and there was only so many times you could use your vibrator before you got bored and there wasn’t a cat’s chance in hell you were ordering a new toy to the studio because Matty didn’t have boundaries and absolutely would have opened it before you could even get the chance to get your hands on it.
You had also promised after day one; after one too many jokes and essentially mounting George at any given moment just to have him near you that you wouldn’t sleep with him. Even though a repeat of his birthday from seven years prior was literally so so temping to you! So what the hell were you going to do? The thought of dating apps made you want to vomit and hanging about bars really didn’t seem that appealing.
But Matty being Matty; was being overly affectionate one night after one too many glasses of red after a show, had the two of you giggling like teenagers and wondering if the two of you had gotten better at kissing since Matty’s 18th. Curiosity getting the better of the both of you, had you surging towards one another in a flurry of horniness after the kiss, was how you found yourself straddling his lap and snogging him like your life depended on it! Until you physically had to pull away to get your breath back and a rush of sense flashed through your brain. The two of you went to bed separately.
Neither of you spoke about it again.
Nor did you ever think about how the two of you were always drawn to each other no matter what shit storm was going on around you until now. You were just tying up the end of the UK leg of the tour, you and the band were in Ireland and Jamie had just told you that *The Scum* were running a horrendous article about Matty. This had in turn resulted in an argument after their penultimate show between the boys.
You knew he did things in the heat of the moment whilst he’s on stage or says shit without thinking and it comes to bite him in the arse almost every time but he’d never do what they’re accusing him of on purpose.
But seeing your brother hurt by Matty’s stupid actions; the repercussions for not just himself but for the rest of the band, your brother, yourself just by association. It was enough for you to step in, in defence of your brother. He came before everyone else, every single time.
This you didn’t realise; had as big of an effect until you were stood frozen on stage in front of your brother, Matty in between you and Ross. Apologising to him, crying in front of thousands of people. How Ross hadn’t broke the facade and took him in his arms was beyond you because your brother’s face was currently blurry to you and he was stood a foot in front of you. Tears filled your brown eyes and were threatening to spill as Matty let his vulnerable side show in front of everyone. Something he never does.
You had done so well until he apologised once more; removing his hand from Ross’s arm and reaching behind him blindly to grab on to you. The tears automatically fell; the action enough to make Ross twitch in an ache to comfort you. Something he couldn’t do until the band had come off stage at the end of consumption.
After the final song of tour; the boys usually head on out for the after party. Tonight you had Matty back at the hotel in your room on his knees and begging for you.
Begging for you to not leave him. Begging for you not to move out. Begging for you to stay by his side. Begging for you to still love him.
You furrowed your eyebrows as you looked down at the man in front of you; on his knees as his hands grasped at your legs, pulling you close as he hugged you as physically close as possible as he sobbed against your legs. Instinctively you reached for his curls, running your fingers through them softly.
“Baby. Look at me.” The softness of his curls tickled your thighs as he stayed pressed against you. “Matthew. Darling look at me.”
You managed to loosen his grip enough to slide down on to your knees in front of him, taking a hold of his face in your hands as you eyes flitted across his face, smiling softly at him as he tried to calm himself down.
“I can’t lose you. I can’t lose any of you.” He shook his head, curls flying in front of his face. “But I can’t lose you darling. I can’t.”
“Matthew. Look at me. Why do you think you’re going to lose me? You’re never going to lose me. You’re kinda stuck with me!” You laughed. “And even if I decided to fuck off, my brother being your bassist kind of means I’m stuck with you anyway.” The grip on his face got tighter as his hands reached up to hold on to your wrists.
“But last night…”
“Ross and I just want you to use your brain sometimes before you do stupid shit! You’ve not lost either of us. I promise.”
“Promise?”
Your heart jumped into your throat at the swell of tears in his eyes and his lip quiver.
“Life. That’s how long you’ve got me for Healy. Promise.” As soon as you stopped speaking; Matty threw himself at you, arms around your neck and squeezing you so tightly you nearly stopped breathing. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you” Being repeated in your ear over and over as you squeezed him back, pressing your lips to the side of his face in consecutive kisses until he abruptly pulled away. Eyes red and looking at you so softly you thought he was going to cry again.
“I love you.”
“I love you too. You know I do.” You smiled at him warmly.
“No. It’s always been you.” He said as he reached for your hands and it felt like you had been hit in the chest. The sting of tears trickling up your face and threatening to fill your eyes as you silently took him in. You went to open your mouth but nothing came out.
“I know I always talk too much but just listen to me. I love you. Since we were kids I reckon, I was just too chicken to ever do anything.  When you kissed me on my 18th birthday. When you saw I needed help,  you saved my life sending me to rehab. Every day, I thought about getting home to you.  It’s what got me through every day. You make me a better man darling. When you take my shit when I don’t deserve it. When you make me a brew in the morning just how I like it. When you roll me a joint when you realise I’m too tense and in my head without me even having to ask. When you tell me to shut the fuck up before a situation escalates. When we go to big Tesco and walk the dog or do all the washing together. I fucking live for that shit because it’s with you. Fuck I’ve been writing songs about you for the past decade! You are intertwined with every era of this band sweetheart. I mean 60% of the last album is about you! ” He chuckled softly.
“What?” Managed to escape you in a gasp.
“Come on sweetheart. Some of this music has literally been out for ten years!”
“I - Just never - Why have you never said anything before now?” Your voice horse with frustration.
“I love your brother too much. But thinking I’d lost the two of you, just made me think fuck it. You deserve to know. You need to know.” Matty shrugged casually.
“That’s stupid.” Your deadpan tone, stunning him silent.
“Sorry?”
“Wasn’t it you that said to me that if Ross knew I was happy. That we were happy he wouldn’t care. He’d have gotten over it? And you’ve just subliminally been telling me you love me through music this entire time?”
“Yes?”
You cocked an eyebrow at his hesitation, the questioning tone as your eyes flit across his handsome features. Cheeks tinged with pink due to his tears, his chest falling up and down rapidly at his confession as he awaited you answer. You still didn’t say anything, thinking about how to respond until you found the perfect response.
Surging forward you pushed your lips against Matty’s. Hands reaching for the curls you loved so much. Waiting for him to reciprocate felt like a life time but your Matthew was well equipped in the art of kissing you back so realistically it was 0.2 seconds after he had gotten over the shock.
You kissed him over and over again, not wanting to stop the feeling of how your lips moved against his, how his tongue felt against yours. You felt like you were on fire, he was intoxicating. He always was but fuck was he more than ever. Finally finding the strength to untangle yourself from him, chests heaving as you both got oxygen back in your lungs you said the words, the way he’d been wishing to hear for the past sixteen years.
“I love you too.”
When he was finally seen in public two days later on the eve of their Gorilla gig in Manchester. The fans noticed Matty was in higher spirits than he had been two days prior when his breakdown was caught on camera. You had been nervous to tell your brother but Ross claimed he already knew Matty was in love with you, he was just waiting to see if he’d actually grow some balls or not! Then he hugged you so tightly and whispered he was happy for the both of you, which in turn had you and Matty crying backstage in their green room as you found yourself in a 1975 sandwich!
You don’t think you had seen Matty look so happy on stage in a long time. He loved touring but it was gruelling but seeing him on stage in this tiny venue with his best friends and his girl watching and waiting for him side stage. He couldn’t stop beaming. The fans noticed, the comments already flying in online about him. They increased tenfold when he jumped offstage, not waiting the ten second walk backstage before kissing you like his life depended on it.
The blurry picture of Matty holding your jaw in his hands as he kissed you in the shadows of the stage was on a 1975 update account within minutes.
Captioned: If you know you know. Finally 🖤

Next part of this series!! Shoutout to the hottie who suggested Young Neil, yk who you are bbg ;) ok I’ll stop being creepy now 😭
Scott Pilgrim - Dating Young Neil Headcanons
You guys met through a mutual friend
They had invited you both to their house to hang out, so you guys were just kind of chilling
Neil was a bit shy at first, but he quickly saw that you were actually really cool
He had way more fun at the hangout because of you; he knew he had to see you again
The more time you spent together, the more Neil started to realize that his infatuation was more than just platonic
So, one day, Neil asks if your next hangout can be a date
He’s sooo nervous and shy about it, but when you say yes he smiles hugely
He goes all-out for your first date: a romantic picnic with flowers and rosé and everything
You guys discover that this, unfortunately, is NOT your vibe
Future dates are much more casual, and consequently much more successful
Just hanging out, doing something mundane like watching movies or playing video games or (trying) to bake cookies—that’s where you guys really connect
Occasionally you will go out together, but it’s never fancy
Dinner and a movie at the most; usually just a concert or a mall trip though
You guys behave a lot like friends, but make no mistake, you’re much more than that
Neil is a touch shy when showing physical affection; but he’s not really opposed to it either
You’ll just have to initiate it if you want something more than a hand on your waist/arm around your shoulders
Because that’s as far as he’ll go; he wants to respect your boundaries
He loves to tell you (and others) how awesome you are, for example
He can and will rant about you for hours
Much to the dismay of his friends
And he loves to do cute couple stuff together, like getting matching onesies or doing face masks
He takes so many pictures…. Even when you’re unaware
If you scroll through his camera roll, you’ll find it to be mostly full of you
Half the pictures are at weird angles, clearly taken in secret
And there’s at least one of you sleeping/napping
He’s not trying to be creepy, he just thinks you look amazing all the time and he wants to remember every time he thinks to himself “wow, they’re gorgeous”
If it wasn’t obvious by now, his love language is quality time
The causal nature of your dates mean that they happen frequently, often on a whim
Neil is always glad to spend time with you, no matter what you’re doing, and no matter how long you’re doing it
Only have five minutes? He’ll take it. You’re filing your taxes? He’ll just play his game boy in the chair next to you; don’t mind him
Nicknames for you include “baby” and “my love”
He likes to be called “handsome,” “big man,” “my love,” or “Neil” (distinct from “Young Neil,” which is what everyone else calls him)
All in all he’s just a sweet guy who loves to chill :]

Far From My Eyes
Tumblr media
Pairing: Javier Peña x F!Reader
Word Count: 3.3k
Summary: It’s summer now, and Javier can look forward to a glorious four months with her alone. He gets to have her all for himself for what feels like an infinite amount of months, the long hazy days of the hottest weeks of the year stretching out in front of him like salt water taffy.
Warnings: childhood best friends to ??, fluff and a tad bit of angst, lots of longing, idiots in love, young!javi deserves more love, a tad bit of body insecurity from both ends
A/N: I took inspiration from the absolute masterpiece that is Fleabag and voila I have an idea for a series. The dialogue I used from Phoebe Waller-Bridge is bolded down below.
I don't own photos, or characters. Divider is from the talented @firefly-graphics.
Tumblr media
Her hands are tucked between the side of her face and her pillow and Javier knows that it’s going to smell like her tomorrow morning and he also knows that he’s going to be desperate enough to press his face into it. She looks like those statues of sleeping child angels. The soft glow from his nightstand light only adds to the effect.
It’s late at night or early morning. She’s half-asleep but fighting it.
His sheets are tucked around her chest, and she’s wearing one of his shirts because she claims that they’re softer than hers. There’s a soft smile hanging around her mouth like early morning dew on a tree’s leaves. It’s a look on her that tugs at something inside him that’s never been tugged at before, but his mind is too muddled to make much sense of it.
They’ve spent the better part of six hours like this.
Old habits die hard.
She was only supposed to stay for dinner, but then he’d taken her to his room claiming that there was a book of hers still in his shelves, which there had been, but then they’d never managed to make it out after.
They’ve found themselves in much the same position as this for over fifteen years. Her hands tucked between her face and pillow, his underneath the covers and both of them on their sides facing each other.
She always lies down closest to the wall. This evening had been no different. He hadn’t even asked her to stay the night but she had this way of drawing him into doing the things she wanted for her, and all of a sudden Javier had found himself handing over his t-shirt, crawling into bed and shifting awkwardly as she tried to do the same.
Some of his best memories as a child come from moments like these.
The time when she’d confessed her first crush on a boy in their class, the other when he’d done the same for his first crush because it felt easier to tell it to her and not his friends at school.
The many times she’d snuck in a box of cookies and they’d eaten all of them until their stomachs were fit to burst, and they were giggling with all the sugar gone to their head.
Those couple of weeks where Javier had found a series of scary story collections in the library and read them to her out loud, and then held her as close as he could to himself so that she could fall asleep.
Dozens upon dozens of memories stacked on top of each other like printed photos, all bathed in soft yellow light and drowning in that gentle silence the night would take on when everyone in the house had fallen asleep.
Looking at her now, at the warm glow of her eyes and the way her hair spreads on her pillow, he finds himself craving chocolate chips and walnuts. Finds that he wants to hold her hand and doesn’t know how to ask for it without it seeming weird.
He’s been desperate for the press of her skin against his, the soft feel of her breaths fanning over his arm and the way her ribs would rise and fall in time. His body has been starved of her in the past few months where she’d been away from him and at college.
It’s summer now though, and Javier can look forward to a glorious four months with her alone, listening to the melodic tilt of her voice as she tells him about college and Austin and what happened when she was away from him as if trying to justify her absence. There’ll be popsicles that will end up more on the ground than in their stomachs, and his hand will be sticky with sugar.
He gets to have her all for himself for what feels like an infinite amount of months, the long hazy days of the hottest weeks of the year stretching out in front of him like salt water taffy.
It’s been two years, two summers and he’s still fooling himself. He’ll blink and they’ll be at the end of August and he’ll be laying on her bed watching her pack her things up again, and biting his tongue so he doesn’t say anything stupid, envy gnawing at his heart.
Even as a kid he’d known she’d been destined for bigger things than Laredo. Had seen it in her voice and in the images she painted for him in his bed when he asked her to tell him a story. She could do that really well, and didn’t need to rely on books the way Javier had to to have the same effect.
But even if she is destined for better, bigger, greater, she’s also his friend and Javier loves her in a way he’s not sure he’s able to describe. Which means that he doesn’t like having to see her off twice a year, scared that she’ll never come back and leaving him here all alone, the ghost of her shadow hanging around every corner.
When he goes to pick her up, at Christmas and in April, there’s a clamp twisted around his ribs and it doesn’t go away until he hears the tears at the edge of her voice and feels the way her hands press into his shoulders. Then he can breathe easy because she’s back and the inevitable has been pushed off for another time.
Javier’s drawn back to the present by the flutter of her eyelids, keenly aware that they’re slower coming back up than they were going down. He should let her sleep but he’s suddenly terrified of what’s to come in August and the hour has painted it so that he’s scared that maybe he’s dreaming.
So, he shuffles forward, and the sound opens her eyes. She starts to smile at him again.
If it is a dream, he hopes it lasts a while.
“If you could change anything…in the whole world,” His voice is still gravelly from the way she’d made him laugh this evening until he felt that he couldn’t breathe anymore. “What would it be?”
Her face is always so open for him, so easy to read. He thinks that if he gets close enough to her eyes, he can see the thoughts arise behind them. There’s a dent between her eyebrows that shows when she’s thinking and Javier presses it away with his thumb. He hides his hands away before he can think too much of it.
“My thighs.”
He laughs, “In the whole world?” It’s clear that it’s late and her mind isn’t working the way it should. He was expecting an answer more worldly from her. Eliminate corruption. Free education and healthcare for all.
Still, he likes her answer much more. Likes that she gave it to him plainly and that she didn’t hide behind words and ideas that were too big for the town, and by association, himself. The people of Laredo say she has her head too far up in the clouds, that her imagination hadn’t been reeled in at the right time and that she’s a lost cause now.
College. They say it as if it’s shameful, when it’s all Javier wants.
Sometimes, he’d catch her eye and feel like he’s the only one who ever really knew her.
He knows that she thinks too much and that she feels too much. She does too much of everything for everyone else that she forgets herself sometimes and Javier has to bring her back with a gentle hand for fear of scaring her away irrevocably.
“But don’t tell anyone I said that,” the fleshy little anxious part of her is wide awake now, her mind having mulled it over for too long. She lets out a small nervous laugh that she only half-commits to, abandoning it before it’s completely out.
Javier shakes his head, inches forward that much more. With every breath he takes in, he can smell her, and it’s strong enough that he can’t pretend that he’s making it up.
“You?”
He follows the same line of reasoning as her answer, “I’ve always been insecure about my face.” He thinks about the time she’d been the only one able to find him during hide-and-seek, and how, instead of ratting him out, she’d squeezed herself next to him and held his hand so hard that his fingers hurt. He thinks in turn about how she didn’t leave until the moment he’d felt ready. “You know that.”
Her smile widens, she’s grinning at him now. He can’t take it anymore and reaches for her hand. She gives it to him without a qualm or question and lets him thread their fingers together. “You shouldn’t.”
Looking away from her for a few seconds he wills the red to not rise to his face, “Well, thanks but-”
“I mean it,” she squeezes his hand, her voice warm. “Seriously, there’s nothing wrong with your nose.”
That makes him pause, pushes down the insecurity that was rapidly growing inside him like mould. He looks at her and frowns.
“I mean, there’s nothing wro-”
“Say that again.”
“I mean there’s nothin-”
“What?”
Javier’s just fucking with her now.
“I don’t know…” he narrows his eyes at her in the way that always makes her spill something she’d been hiding from him. The soft corners of her voice turn panicked, “I always say the wrong thing!” He wants to contradict her, but she’s already hiding away from him, face pressed into his chest.
The air gets kicked out of his lungs because of how close she is to him and how she’s staying so close to him. She’d arrived over a week ago but had just come for dinner tonight, at Chucho’s insistence only.
Despite the years they’ve spent together, Javier becomes shy when she first comes back, awkward and fumbling as he tries to pull himself upright long enough so that she doesn’t suspect anything’s changed in their relationship.
Because really, nothing has.
It just takes a while for him to get used to her and the idea that she’s once again a four minute drive away from him.
“You’re an asshole,” she mumbles and he can feel it in his chest. He’s glad she can’t see him now because he’s trying to rapidly blink away his tears.
He’s missed her.
“M’know.”
“I’ve missed you,” pulling away, she looks up at him. The words are offered up like an apology. Javier doesn’t accept it because she can never do wrong to him. For a split second he fears that she’ll go back to her side of his bed and without thinking about it, his free arm curls around her.
“M’know.”
The corners of her eyes crinkle, “Smart-ass.”
He rolls his eyes and his hand seeks out the comforting dips and grooves of her spine.
In a couple of days, he’ll regain his footing and be brave enough to reach underneath her shirt and feel her skin. Right now, it’ll be too intense for him, he has to build up to it. “You meant it? ‘Bout my nose?”
“Yeah,” her gaze falls to it. “There’s nothing wrong with it…Really, I mean it, and not just ‘cause you’re my friend either.” Javier’s just a little scared that she’d managed to read his mind even after they’ve spent months apart.
Javier thinks that the person who first said ‘far from the eye, far from the heart’ had never really loved anyone.
“I don’t-”
“You should…the tip, it’s very…kissable.”
He’s suddenly acutely aware of how close she is to him, and swallows in time with the bob of her throat. She lets go of his hand and he lets her and tries to ignore the caving in of his stomach.
Her head falls beside his on his pillow. She’s just far away enough so that his eyes can focus on her. He tries not to think of her and how she’s thought that his nose is kissable and fails miserably.
“Javi?”
“Hm?”
“Will you take me to the movies sometime?”
His forehead wrinkles, “Of course.” There’s a movie theatre just over an hour by car from Laredo that they’ve been going to since he’d learned to drive. Summer was synonymous with cold ice cream and her smile beaming at him in his bed, spending the days fleeing the hot sun and the evenings in the violently AC’d air of the movie theatre. “‘Course I will.” Fear seizes up in his throat, “Why are you askin’?”
She just shrugs, eyes falling to his shirt and staying there.
He presses, anxiety drumming in his blood, “When d’ya wanna go?”
“Oh, I dunno,” she shuffles closer to him on the pillow and Javier has to hold his head just a little further back so he can see her clearly. “Just…sometime.”
The static of the silent night falls around them.
“You know,” at the sound of his voice her eyes meet his and he doesn’t know how to describe the feelings that wash over him. He wishes that she would never look away. “Your thighs are great, you shouldn’t change them.”
Candles light up around her face and she smiles, biting her lip like she always does when she gets shy, “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Great?”
He nods and then teases so she won’t hear how serious he is about this, “And I’m not just saying it as your friend either.”
Maybe if they were both well-rested, they could have heard what he’d written in between his lines. They’re not and his insinuation flies over both of their heads.
A giggle bubbles up in her throat and the room grows brighter, even with the sunrise still a few hours away. “You think about my thighs a lot, Javi?”
He sends it right back, “You think about my nose a lot?”
Her lips pout down and she starts to frown at him playfully, “No fair.”
“You think about kissing my nose just as much?”
The amusement falls from her face, and he becomes scared that he’s forgotten how to read her in just four months. They always knew when to push and when to stop, when to be pulled and when to pull. A delicate tug-of-war balance that could only be achieved over years of spending any possible moment they could together.
There’s nothing that scares Javier more than forgetting how to pick up on her cues. He thinks that if it ever did happen, he’d stop living.
Life only had meaning when he knew that she picked at her cuticles when she was anxious, that she leaned onto her right shoulder when she was bored and her left shoulder when she was uncomfortable, and that chamomile tea helps her calm down and that she prefers witty one-liners to elaborate jokes that take years to set up and usually end up being a let-down anyways.
He murmurs her name, hoping that he hasn’t ruined his summer with her with just one question, “I-”
Her lips press lightly to the blunt tip of his nose. It’s as soft as the breath of a baby, fleeting as the flap of a butterfly’s wings, and shorter than a heartbeat. For Javier it feels like being born anew. The ever-present noise in his head goes silent. All he can hear now is the rhythmic rise and fall of her breaths. His meaning is only given to him by her face in front of him.
Awkwardly, like the rusty joints of a car, Javier leans towards her, so close to her that the edges of her face are blurry.
In the same manner as her, he presses an idea of a kiss onto her mouth and pulls back just as quickly, if not faster.
His nose and his mouth are tingling.
She’s looking at him in a way he’s never seen before. The rush of emotions that it triggers inside him leads to him kissing her again, long enough that they can both understand what he did the first time, long enough for him to feel how soft her lips are.
She lets out a little sound and Javier comes to himself again. His ears pop and his world grows from just her back to his room around him and the gravity of his actions fall down on him like a boulder.
In a jerky movement he pulls away, his heart hammering against his chest, eyes widening.
Images start to flash across his mind.
He sees her frowning and yelling at him, changing back into her clothes and going back to her house. His stomach drops as he thinks of her leaving his bed eternally, and of the way her smell will fade from his sheets in a couple week’s time. He thinks of what he’s going to do with the rest of his summer and what’s going to happen at the end of it when he won’t be the one driving her to the bus stop and then watching her bus drive away until he can’t see it on the horizon.
He should look away now, so as to make the leaving part easier, but instead he’s selfishly drinking up the last few moments he has with her, before he starts mourning their friendship.
Instead of moving away like he’d been expecting, she inches forward, presses her palms to the sides of his face and runs her thumbs under the tender skin of his eyes. “Come back to me, Javi.”
He doesn’t know how.
“Baby,” her eyes are searching his face and he’s back to her. He’s back in her arms and in his bed. His heart is still pounding but he only knows himself in relation to her so it doesn’t matter.
This time, when he kisses her, she’s already there halfway. Her hands are in his hair and though they’ve been there a thousand times before, it feels new to him. His body sings for her skin against his but he can’t bring himself to do it. His hands remain on her waist, on top of his shirt.
“Did you miss me?” she’s out of breath with her forehead pressed against his. Her breaths are fanning out across his face like the waves of the ocean.
It takes a moment for his mind to straighten itself out, for him to realise what she’s asking of him.
Slowly, he sits up, with her in his arms and his lips against hers. He gives butterflies after hummingbirds of kisses to her and she accepts each one as if they were the first. His stomach twists into itself and untwists. He feels as if his heart has just started to beat after twenty long years.
She’s leaning against his arms and looking up at him breathlessly, her chest labouring to catch her breath.
Javier wants to reply but he also wants to kiss her again and he does. Meandering and lazy as he pushes his tongue into her mouth. She makes no move to rush him, thumbs running across his cheeks, one hand reaching under the collar of his shirt and resting at the place his neck meets his shoulder.
He pulls away and closes his eyes for a brief moment and then opens them again out of fear that she’ll disappear.
“Yeah, I missed you,” he’s breathing harshly as he says her name. The words tumble out before he has a chance to think about them, “All I did was miss you.”

Hiya, how is baby alpha max doing? I hope you had a nice day 🧡
They were friends.
That’s what Daniel said, that day in Max’s driver’s room, when he told Max to essentially knock it off. He’d said they’d be friends and nothing had to change.
Except everything changed, was the problem.
Daniel kept it cordial and friendly for all team-related duties but where he’d hang out with Max in their rooms, or goof around in the garages, or sit with Max on flights, he’d stopped. He’d stopped getting too close, stopped the friendly banter, stopped his casual friendly affection because.
Because he knew how Max felt and he didn’t feel it back.
Max wasn’t sure which was more crushing: the blatant rejection, or the lie that they’d still be friends.
He missed Daniel, was the trouble. He missed being friends, and goofing around, and talking on flights, and going down to Daniel’s apartment to bother him when they were both in Monaco, and it just sucked.
Max was so attuned to Daniel’s scent that things were hard when they were in proximity to each other. He could smell Daniel’s warm, honey-like scent lingering everywhere and he seemingly never was able to dull it out like he could with other omegas. Other omegas smelled great, most of the time, but he got used to them. Daniel was always overwhelming and Max always struggled to not react to him.
Infinitely worse was when Daniel came to team meetings or emerged from hotel rooms smelling like alpha.
Infinitely, crushingly, despairingly worse.
Max was young but he was as much an alpha as anyone else was. And sure, he was newly presented and a virgin and awkward and gangly and weird, but he could… he could do all the things Daniel needed as an omega. Max could take care of him. Provide for him. Be there with him through his heats. And more than all that Max genuinely cared for and was mostly probably very much in love with Daniel, and none of the alphas he ever spent time with probably felt that way. Probably they just wanted a hot night with Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and nothing more.
It all came to a head when a package of promotional shit – clothes, shoes, whatever sponsor Red Bull had teamed them up with this time – arrived to Max’s door, but the contents were all clearly meant for Daniel. Daniel-sized hoodies and joggers that Max wouldn’t fit into.
He could have asked an assistant to deliver it to Daniel’s apartment but it was only a few floors below and Max could.. he could be normal, and go down there to give it to Daniel. Explain the mix-up. Get the package Daniel likely had that was meant for Max.
Max stuffed the box under his arm and headed for Daniel’s floor, knocked when he arrived but got no answer. He knew Daniel was home because he could smell him, and tried not to reprimand himself for being so weird about Daniel’s scent. Frowning, Max entered the code to the pinpad of Daniel’s door – at least that part was still the same – and cracked the door open enough to hear the shower running, which explained why Daniel didn’t answer.
Max slipped inside and closed the door behind himself before coming into the apartment with the intention of putting the package on Daniel’s kitchen island for him to find. He set the box down and turned to leave when his heart clenched a little at the sight of what was clearly a small little omega nest in Daniel’s living room – soft blankets, some clothes.
Max smiled because he knew nesting was an omega’s instinct and one Daniel indulged in as much as he could. Max knew this, and before Daniel told him to knock it off Max would bring blankets to their flights together for Daniel.
Still, he meant to leave when something caught his eye.
The navy Red Bull hoodie he’d been missing, sure he’d left at a track somewhere across Europe, who knew.
Max frowned as he reached down to pick it up from Daniel’s nest, heart lurching into his stomach as his own musky, woodsy alpha scent hit him.
Why did Daniel have Max’s hoodie in his nest?
“Uh,” came Daniel’s voice from the hall where Daniel had clearly startled to see Max in his living room. Max hadn’t even heard the shower turn off.
“Daniel,” he near gasped, clutching his hoodie in his hands as he looked up at a very anxious Daniel, warm scent suddenly sour with… guilt, embarrassment, shame, Max wasn’t too sure. “Why do you… why is… I’ve been looking for this,” he stammered, not knowing what to make of it all.
“You should go,” Daniel said, tugging at the sleeves of his own sweater, looking uncomfortable as Max had ever seen him.
“Sorry, I. I just. A package came to me but it was for you, it’s. The kitchen,” Max stumbled, not sure what to do with the hoodie in his hands. It was his yet taking it with him felt like an intrusion, and leaving it here was weirder, still.
“Just, please go,” Daniel said, smelling distressed and embarrassed and Max just wanted to know why.
“Sorry,” Max hurried, dropping his hoodie back to Daniel’s nest before crossing the room to flee.
Back in his own apartment Max leaned against the door, breathing slowly to still his racing heart.
Daniel had something that smelled like him in his nest and Max’s mind reeled with the possibilities of what that could mean.

AITA for telling the truth about punching my stepson?
I am a 29 year old gay trans man. I recently married my husband (51M) and have been trying to bond with my stepson (21M). My husband raised my stepson alone from when he was 10 when my husband's ex-wife stepped out of the picture, and they are very close. He didn't start dating again until about 5 years ago and didn't realize he was attracted to men until a few years ago. He and his son lived in a conservative area until his son went off to college, and his son was kind of confused and upset about his father dating men, and when he found out I was trans he said some hurtful things which gave our relationship a rocky start. He's been much better but our relationship has always been a little awkward and stilted.
He's a big straight cis guy- like he was a linebacker in high school, and was planning on joining a frat until my husband, who is a worrier, talked him out of it and I'm a fat gay trans nerd. We have pretty much nothing in common and he didn't like that his dad was dating a man let alone a trans man who's only 8 years older than him. Between COVID and his college we also haven't spent much time together.
In February my husband and I got married and moved closer to the city where my stepson is in school. He was living on campus when we got married and is living with some friends during the summer, but he does laundry at our house and comes over for dinner at least once a week. We've been trying to get to know each other but it's awkward. My husband really really wants us to be closer and has tried to come up with activities we all enjoy to do together so it'll be less awkward.
He likes sports and martial arts and I did aikido as a kid for weeb reasons so I offered to take us to a beginner martial arts class and to take him and his friends out to dinner sometimes because they're college students and I work in computer programming, and though I have going out with friends money now, I remember the appeal of free food in college.
He took me up on the class and I thought things were going well but then one week he took me up on the food thing and his friends were uncomfortable because I'm 29 years old and he introduced me as his stepdad and they were what I would describe as playfully trans and homophobic. I brushed it off because it's a weird situation and i figured they were trying to diffuse the tension.
The next week when we got to class one of his friends was there. He and his friend spent the class hanging out with each other and ignoring me which hurt but I tried to brush it off.
When we got to sparring towards the end of class I was paired with my stepson and so we were sparring normally.
Full disclosure I've taken a few self defense classes and have been assaulted. This is not an excuse but it is the reason for the next bit.
My stepson's friend was goading us while we were sparring and stepped a little too close which knocked us both off our game and when my stepson went in for a normal grab, I freaked out a little and fully decked him in a totally illegal move. The second it happened I stepped away and started apologizing like crazy.
My stepson's nose was bleeding and the instructor was immediately right there to help him. My stepson said it was fine and laughed it off and said he was just bummed he would have to sit out the rest of class but he'd come up with a good story to tell girls and it would get him dates.
The friend also apologized for getting too close.
The instructor said he had been about to call for us to stop because we were too close to other people and he could see that I had panicked and that it would be okay because everyone signed waivers, but I should probably hold off sparring for now and we'd talk about what set me off so it wouldn't happen again. He was really nice about it, apparently he teaches self defense to survivors and recognized my reaction.
My stepson and I sat out the rest of class and I apologized a few more times and he kept brushing it off before he finally snapped and said it was fine because I punch like a girl anyway. He then got a ride with his friend.
When I got home I immediately went to my husband to tell him what happened and apologize and ask what he thought I should do to fix the situation. When I got to my husband he said that my son had already called him and told him everything and that neither he nor my stepson were upset with me. That these things happen and I shouldn't blame myself. I asked how I should make it up to my stepson and my husband said i didn't need to do anything and something like accidents happen or something. I just kind of let it go and decided to see how things went the next time I saw my stepson.
The next time my stepson came over, it became apparent that my stepson had lied to my husband about what happened. My husband believed that "some anxious chick" from the class had been the one to freak out and punch my stepson.
I wanted to be honest with my husband but I didn't want to upset my stepson and between the "punch like a girl" and the "some anxious chick" I felt like there's something more going on with why he lied to my husband. I wanted to talk to my stepson about it but he's been ignoring me since telling me that I punch like a girl.
My stepson ignored me and I avoided talking about the whole situation to my husband for about 10 days. It was causing me constant guilt and anxiety but I really wanted to talk to my stepson first.
Last night my husband mentioned that my stepson's bruise is finally completely gone and I broke down and told him everything. He was upset with both his son and me. He said that he could understand me accidentally hitting his son but keeping it from him made him feel like it was malicious. He said he needed time to process, so we didn't really talk about it, or at all after that. Between me punching his kid and lying and his son also lying and blaming a woman for it, my husband is mad at both of us, as apparently his son calling me a 'woman' to upset my husband has been a thing.
Evidently he called my stepson about it because when my stepson came by the house to get his laundry today, he was furious with me for "narcing on us" and allowing his dad to "blow things out of proportion."
I know lying in the first place was bad, but aita for telling my husband the truth after my stepson and I had seemingly agreed to keep it secret, especially without talking to my stepson first?
What are these acronyms?

tenaciously uptight
summary: for the longest time, you thought you were the only jealous one. but soon, you realize your feelings for your best friend might not be so unrequited. (gn!reader)
wordcount: 4.3k
A/N: IM SO SORRY FOR THE WAIT OH MY GOD. thank you for requesting. im so sorry. please let me know if there's any glaring errors i barely beta-ed this
Tumblr media
You were aware that your best friend wasn't the most observant guy, but seriously; he was completely and utterly unaware of anything even slightly related to romance.
After all, he never noticed whenever anybody sent longing glances in his general direction. He never picked up on any hidden intentions when people batted their eyelashes at him or asked for his phone number. And he certainly didn't understand the fact that most, if not all of the people who wanted to hang out with him or just spent time with him in general found him attractive. How could they not? A tall, broad-shouldered golden retriever who didn't have a mean bone in his body was repulsive to few.
However, you knew him very well and his self-esteem … was in the gutter. For many reasons, most of which were a certain individual parent who you preferred to leave unnamed. And that was mostly the reason why, even though he could pick up on whenever someone was flirting with someone else, he couldn't get a clue when somebody took interest in him.
Even though you were very patient with him, and appreciated him dearly, sometimes you wished that he would just get a single clue. You were used to being the one who watched from afar as he was flirted with -- as girls shamelessly looked him up and down and pretended to be interested in Van Halen or Kiss (pun not intended) in order to segue the conversation to more intimate topics. It wasn't anything new, but you still couldn't stop the thing with claws and fangs which tore at your chest whenever it happened.
You knew that you couldn't do much else, even when you had felt something for Ted since the sixth grade; which was funny to look back on, because he was always asking for a spare pencil from you, and somehow, when you were twelve, that was cute. Ever since he hit his growth spurt, you'd been dealing with the immeasurable amount of jealousy that came with having feelings for a boy who was sometimes oblivious to the extent where it seemed he was blind.
There had been a couple hints here and there over the time that you'd known him. That maybe he reciprocated all of the mishmash of stuff that you harbored for him. It wasn't enough, though.
(Were you really going to ruin everything you had over an awkward hand brush that one time at the movies?)
Nowadays, you both worked at the Pretzels 'N' Cheese booth in the mall, which was an excellent strategy for being able to hang out while simultaneously earning money. And it was true that your clothes always picked up the smell of cheese and stayed that way until thrown in the wash, but it was worth it. Way better than working at American Eagle, which always attracted the catty middle-aged ladies. At least you could pacify them briefly with an excessively salty pretzel.
Since it was summertime, there were more than enough mall-goers looking for unhealthy snacks to waste their money on.
Occasionally you saw people you vaguely knew from high school, in various states of panic or otherwise. It was weird at first, but you'd gotten used to it. Today was no exception.
Tyler McClellan (who had somehow been in all of your English-related classes) hadn't changed much. He was still blonde, mullet-ed, and smiled too much, but it was better than him just being plain rude, so you didn't mind.
What you did mind was the way he was leaning over the counter towards you, acting as if Ted wasn't there at all.
"So, uh," he said, grinning like he was being real smooth. "Been a while. You come here often?"
"I work here," you answered politely. "Are you going to order anything?"
He ignored your question. "Y'know, you haven't changed in the slightest."
"Oh, cool." You tried again. "Can I get you anything?"
Yet another failure. "Kinda sucks that we're both bumming around San Dimas, huh? I've been thinkin' about heading down to the beach." Tyler ran a hand through his hair for the third time in the span of roughly two minutes. "Catch a few waves. Weather looks good." Wiggling his eyebrows in a move that would've only worked in a terrible romantic comedy, he leaned even closer -- if that was possible. "It'd be pretty dope if you could come along."
You snuck a look at Ted, seeing if he was possibly going to intervene or anything before you shut Tyler down; he met your eyes before quickly glancing away.
Huh.
Well, he'd never liked confrontation.
"I'm not interested." Keeping your tone clear, you sincerely hoped that Tyler and his hopeless baby blue eyes would go somewhere else and maybe flirt with Hannah who worked at Claire's instead. "Please. Do you want a pretzel or not?"
He looked at you for a moment, but you held your ground.
And finally, gradually, to your relief, his shoulders sagged, and that ever-present smile slipped off his face. "... Okay, okay." He straightened up, stuffing his hands back into the pockets of his jeans. "One pretzel. No cheese or salt. Please."
He paid in a couple crumpled bills, and slouched off somewhere else; not even bothering to say a simple 'thanks'.
Ted was still quiet.
"Um." Awkwardly, you looked over at Ted again after putting the money in the register and making sure you didn't give Tyler any extra pennies. "You okay? He's gone now, I think."
Your words seemed to shake him out of whatever reverie he'd entered while you were talking with Tyler. "Oh! Uh." His hand automatically flew up to scratch the back of his neck. "... Sorry, dude. Yeah, I'm good." Another weird thing -- he was religiously avoiding eye contact, where he'd normally be focused intently on what you were saying. You were skeptical at best as to if he was telling the truth, but didn't want to make him uncomfortable.
So you dropped it. "Alright."
For the rest of your shift, Ted was … tense? Stiff. He eventually eased up a little, once you asked him about his and Bill's progress on marathoning all of the low-budget slasher movies they'd rented, but there was still a hint of something there, in the way he kept fidgeting with his hands. Again, you didn't mention it. Maybe he was just uncomfortable because of Tyler's presence.
You couldn't blame him.
But later, when you were both making sure neither of the machines had leaked cheese onto the floor; he brought up the topic again.
"Dude, stop me if this is weird, or boundary-pushing, but… " He gently rolled his shoulders, as if he was shrugging off a jacket. "Did you actually wanna go hang out with that dude?" There was something in his voice that you were, unfortunately, familiar with. Vulnerability. But, unlike the other times, you couldn't exactly place why.
"Y'know, just wondering," he added.
You squashed your curiosity down in favor of a disgusted expression. "Ew, no way. I barely know him -- or knew him at all." Dismissively, you waved a hand. "He's not my type, anyway." The exact opposite of it, actually.
"Oh." He paused.
"I'm … gonna go wash my hands."
And with that, he practically darted off to the tiny employee closet, too fast for you to mention that there was no trace of anything on his fingers.
You stood there for a moment, bewildered at his sudden escape. Maybe he just wanted space or something -- but, still, you had absolutely no idea what was going on. It wasn't like he was hard to read. But you just didn't know why he was acting so … skittish.
Thankfully, when he finished "washing his hands", everything looked like it was going to go back to normal. He laughed aloud when you cracked a joke about that one time Bill spilled a metric ton of cheese on the floor.
About two minutes later, you were both sitting in the van. It was a short ride from the mall to your apartment, which you "shared" with an acquaintance who was basically never there. You didn't know exactly why, but you got the gist of it from the fact that she always came back either inebriated or hungover. At least she did her laundry.
Noticeably, Ted wasn't strained like before. Seemed like your admission concerning Tyler made him less nervous. He let you fiddle with the radio for a little while before settling on a channel.
"Oh, yeah, I almost forgot you liked this kind of music, dude!" He beamed, having to shout over the sound of the wind whistling through the window; the air-conditioning had been busted for the longest time. "Stellar!"
It wasn't too long until the van pulled up outside your apartment complex. Making sure your keys hadn't fallen out of your pocket, you hopped out. Just before you shut the van door, you offered a smile to Ted.
"Thanks for the ride. See you later."
"Wait!"
You paused. "What?"
He still had a hand idly on the wheel, but you noticed he was clutching it a little tighter. " … We're still on for tomorrow, right?"
Right. Every Friday since forever had been movie night. He didn't often clarify it with you, since it was an unspoken thing. Even if Ted's memory wasn't the best, he always remembered.
You gave Ted another curious look. "Yeah. Of course."
"Cool."
There was an awkward pause, before you filled it in again. "Cool. Uh, yeah, see you." Shutting the van door, you didn't linger long before walking up to the door of your apartment complex, mind whirling a little faster than usual.
If you claimed that you didn't think about Ted's behavior later in the evening, when you were shoving some leftovers in the oven or when you were getting ready for bed, then you'd be a huge liar.
The next day was uneventful at best for the most part, since it was your day off. You were usually a bit antsy before hanging out with Ted, nothing out of the ordinary for sure. But this time, there was something else alongside the typical restlessness. Not being able to specifically pinpoint what this something was made you even more restless, which wasn't fun.
At around seven, the familiar van pulled up. You'd already been waiting -- summer evenings in San Dimas were nice and cool, unlike the unrelenting heat that arrived in the afternoon.
Bill waved at you from the driver's seat, rolling down the window. "C'mon!"
He was maybe a bit more of an aggressive driver than his taller counterpart, but the route to their apartment hadn't changed. As per usual.
"Dude." Drawing out the 'u', he smirked. "Listen. Ted rented a bunch of these cheesy forties movie musicals --" Bill snickered to himself, " -- can you believe it? Never in the history of mankind would I have expected a genre such as that one to be selected for our movie nights, much less by Ted."
"I mean, it's kind of a nice change from the terrible gory flicks you guys watch all the time." You were mostly indifferent as you watched houses and other assorted buildings cruise by through the window. "Well, yeah, still kind of surprising, though. But it's good to have a change of pace, right?"
Your mind abruptly conjured up an image of Ted dancing in a smart black suit and matching top hat, a la Fred Astaire.
"True," was Bill's thoughtful reply.
Luckily, just like the drive to work, it wasn't too long to Bill and Ted's apartment. The second you stepped in the door, you were engulfed by an aroma of incredible, delightful, microwave popcorn. Ted waved semi-wildly at you from his comfortable seat on the couch, already sinking into the horde of different, brightly-colored pillows. A large bowl of what you'd smelled earlier was sitting in his lap.
Without any fanfare, you walked over and plopped down next to him. He smiled brightly. "Hey!"
"Hey yourself." You reached over his lap to grab a handful of popcorn, and he moved the bowl a little closer to make it easier for you to do so.
A long sigh drifted over from Bill's general direction. "C'moon. Why do I always gotta be the one to put in the tapes?"
"No one said that you had to, dude."
"I don't see you getting up to help." He shot a look at Ted, who grinned innocently.
"I'm totally stuck under this most hefty bowl of popcorn."
Bill narrowed his eyes at you next; you just shrugged in response.
"You both suck," he declared, but moved to get the tapes anyway.
A bit later, all of your eyes were glued to the small screen, and all of the popcorn was pretty much gone. The first movie to be chosen was about halfway through, and still, the tune of the catchy titular song was stuck in your head. You had assumed that was the point.
"Do all babes fall for dudes who help them turn off the lights?" Questioned Ted aloud.
"It has to be more complicated than that," insisted Bill. "I have learned from experience that the process of woo-ing is not just. Like. Being able to reach up to switch off a chandelier or whatever."
"Right, but who knows?" You chimed in. "Some people really like acts of service."
"Acts, plural," came Bill's defiant assertion. "Nobody's that easy."
"I dunno, dude," chirped Ted. "I would be totally flattered if somebody turned off the lights for me."
"Well, yeah, you become deeply infatuated with various babes on sight," shot back Bill.
You were suddenly glad you had an excellent poker face.
"That's different," pleaded Ted. "You know, everyone has those sorts of things, right? Little crushes?" He sounded embarrassed. "Well, you can't really use that as an example! That is totally underhanded of you."
"You cannot deny the intense attraction and infatuation you feel for certain babes on sight," recited Bill solemnly. Suddenly, his focus was on you. "We both know that for sure. Right?"
"Uh." You faltered. It was the truth. But something inside you refused to accept it, which was both infuriating and yet another validation of your feelings.
"Yeah, I guess," you settled for. But you quickly added, "he's kind of matured since high school, though."
"That's what I'm saying!" Burst out Ted, and you were glad that the bowl was nearly empty, as he would've sent it all flying in the air. " 'Sides, Bill, weren't you the one makin' eyes at the sales lady at the record store the other day? You sure looked infatuated, all from the fact that she helped you to find that Ozzy record -- "
" -- even you admitted you found her cute -- "
"Dude, shut up!"
You let them bicker for a little while longer, until you couldn't hear the dialogue over their petty arguing. And then, an intervention was necessary.
"Okay! Okay."
They both fell silent, and you were glad. "Who cares if you're both easy or not. I think, personally, I would also be at least kind of flattered if someone helped me out with a chore or something. It's polite."
Bill just pouted, looking back at the television. Ted turned slightly to face you, looking curious.
"So … If a dude helped you with your laundry or something, would you take interest in him?"
You didn't interpret it as anything other than a genuine question.
"I mean, since laundry is boring, I'd definitely get a good opinion on him. It takes more than that for me to, like, seriously consider dating a guy." Like maybe always remembering your birthday, and giving you little special homemade gifts he made himself. Or like listening closely to everything you said. Or maybe giving you his jacket on a chilly day; disregarding himself even though you could see the goosebumps on his gangly arms, or …
Man, you had it bad.
Ted nodded in that distinct way of his. "Gotcha."
"Would you find it attractive?" You asked, surprising yourself.
He didn't seem bothered, though. Just a little sheepish. "I suck at doing laundry, you know that. So yeah, I'd probably be. Like. A little interested, at least."
"Yeah."
The movie was pretty good for the rest of its runtime, and there wasn't much conversation that passed between the three of you. By the time the credits rolled, you heard either of them stifle a yawn.
For a moment, all of you just sat there. Then, slowly you and Ted turned to look at Bill.
He threw his hands up in the air. "Are you kidding me?"
The rest of the night passed in a near-blur, and before long, Ted was rummaging through the cabinet of their tiny bathroom, looking for the spare toothbrush. Bill was probably already fast asleep; around one, during yet another dramatic tap-dancing scene, he'd dozed off, and it had taken a bit of effort to wake him up and get him to bed. He'd always slept like a log.
"So," you said, from your perch near the sink. "What'd you think of the movies? Better than Cujo?"
"Oh, dude, that particular film is an experience." He was crouched on the floor, but looked up in order to make eye contact with you. "But, I don't think I can compare 'em. They're too different -- all-American movie musicals versus B-movie slashers."
"True."
A few seconds later, Ted let out an 'aha!' as he found what he'd been so doggedly searching for. "Think fast!"
You fumbled for the neon green toothbrush he tossed at you, but managed to not drop it. "Thanks."
With a bit of effort, he got to his feet, then stretched; you politely averted your eyes from the way his old tee shirt rode up his stomach.
"What'd you think?"
Pausing from where you were squirting toothpaste onto the bristles of your toothbrush, you thought it over for a moment. "Pretty decent and enjoyable in general. Obviously cheesy at some points, but that's kinda the novelty of it all." You smiled. "It's not called the Golden Age for nothing."
"I agree wholeheartedly," he replied.
Strangely, he was lingering. Usually he just left you to do whatever you needed before you settled down on the couch, but even after you finished splashing water on your face, he was still by the doorway.
"Something up?" Turning to face him, you leaned back on the counter, ignoring how it dug into your back a bit uncomfortably. "Still thinking about that little debate with Bill over easiness?" You couldn't help but tease.
The combination of the late hour and the fact that it was just you two, in relative close proximity, made this feel intimate, almost; like you were the only two people on Earth. Since the apartment wasn't in the more populated areas of San Dimas, the only occasional sound outside was the revving of a car engine or the rare hoot of an owl.
"Well, kinda." Averting his gaze for a moment, his hand found a familiar place on the back of his neck, "but, um, not really. I just … "
You waited patiently, and he eventually picked up the sentence again. "I just wanted to, uh. Ask you another question."
"Why didn't you ask me earlier?" It slipped out before you could stop it.
"I … I didn't want to," he said, and you thought that was it, but then; "not in front of Bill. He would probably never let me forget it."
"Oh?" Both interested and nervous, you looked at him imploringly.
His Adam's apple bobbed. "Um. Yesterday, you mentioned that dude wasn't 'your type', and then like, a couple hours ago you said you liked acts of service, right?" He kept barreling forward. "So I'm just, like, curious -- "
"What is your type?"
Your first instinct was to find it funny. All that build-up, for a simple question like that? But then, the truth hit you; you couldn't be completely honest when answering it. And normally that wouldn't be a huge problem, but guilt was slowly creeping up on you. You never had lied to Ted, and you didn't want to start now, just to protect your own dignity or whatever. Disregarding the fact that Ted had somehow remembered a one-off comment you'd made, you hastily put together an adequate response.
"Well, uh," you started, "you know I'm not too picky, but what I really look for in a relationship is being able to support each other, no matter what. Always being there for one another. Always being able to remember what makes them happy and what doesn't." Exhaling slowly, you felt oddly … Exposed. "And being able to make each other laugh. That's all. "
He didn't respond for a few seconds, but then,
"Did you find him funny?"
You were caught utterly off-guard. "What?"
"Tyler."
Another case of avoiding eye contact, and you were worried.
"What? No!" Dumbfounded, you didn't notice that you were repeating yourself. "Ted, I told you that I wasn't interested in him at all. Why're you bringing him up now?"
"I just wanted to know," he said, shrinking in on himself a little, "you know, you could've said yes, he's real good-looking -- "
"Why does that matter?" Cutting him off, you shook your head. "I'm gonna answer that myself. It doesn't! He was being a huge creep, there's no way -- "
" -- I know you'd like to go to the beach, dude -- "
" -- no, I didn't, that'd be really inconvenient, you -- "
" -- you didn't have to feel forced to say no just 'cause of stupid outside factors, I saw you considering it -- "
"I wasn't!" You exclaimed.
Seeing the expression on Ted's face, you hurriedly reeled yourself back in, dropping your voice to nearly a soft murmur. "... I wasn't. Why don't you believe me?"
The silence was so thick, weighing upon your shoulders like a heavy blanket.
But instead of being comfortable, it was suffocating.
A beat longer.
"Sorry, sorry," he finally mumbled, "sorry, I got… Ahead of myself. Sorry. I do believe you, I swear."
"No, no," you rushed to fill in the gap, "no, it's fine, it's alright." You'd stopped leaning back, now at full attention.
Ted peeked at you from underneath his bangs, and you took that as your cue to continue.
"I'm just … I'm just confused. Why…?"
Your voice trailed off, but before you could pull yourself together enough to clarify what you meant, he spoke up instead.
"I'm sorry, just -- " your heart broke; you heard the emotion warping the edges of his voice, but before you could say anything once more, he interrupted.
"Just forget … all of this. I - it's nothing. Sorry. I screwed up, that's all." He turned away, but not before you could catch sight of his trembling hands.
"See you in the morning, dude."
No. Not like this, you couldn't let him shuffle off to bed like this. You'd known how many times he'd done that already in his life. You'd witnessed it firsthand; the way he always bottled it all up, acting as if nothing happened while that was anything but the truth. You couldn't let him turn away and act like everything was normal the next day.
You reached out, wrapping a hand around his wrist.
He stopped immediately.
"Please. I can't forget this, and I know if I try it'll just keep getting harder not to." He was still facing away from you, but you didn't let that stop you.
"We've never hidden anything important from each other, Ted. You know I'm always here for you." Maybe there was a hint of desperation in your words -- but you were, and you were on the edge of begging. "Please, I hate fighting with you. I shouldn't have lost my temper."
He didn't speak for a little while; but he didn't pull away.
Then, eventually.
"I thought I could handle it, like before, but this time I just couldn't."
Now, he was facing you, your hand still around his wrist; and now, your hand was in his.
You couldn't speak, but that was fine, because he was still talking.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, dude. But seeing him looking at you like that -- " His breath caught in his throat. "... I never could be so forward, especially not with you. But I think I gotta."
Was this really happening? You felt light-headed all of a sudden. Did you fall asleep during the movie?
But his touch was grounding.
You could feel the calluses on his fingertips.
"I'm," he began, voice trembling. "I've been. In love with you. For a really long time."
Floored.
Maybe you were dreaming. Your Ted wouldn't be looking you directly in the eyes, professing his feelings to you, the blush on his face clear as a bad vocalist underneath the ugly fluorescent lights of the bathroom. Your Ted wouldn't be still holding your hand as if it was the most precious thing in the world. Your Ted didn't see you as anything other than a great pal.
… Right?
Wait, no, your Ted was still talking.
"A - and I know this is really sudden and you're not obligated to return anything because obviously it's kinda awkward because we're best friends and it's gonna change everything -- I like everything, but -- "
If he could be so brutally forward, it was probably your turn to do so too.
"Ted."
His mouth snapped shut.
"Ted," you repeated, face flaming. "I love you too."
There. Years of feelings all expressed in Four. Simple. Words.
For a moment, he looked like a fish; mouth opening and shutting uselessly.
Then, you were pulled into a bear hug.
Nothing unfamiliar, but this time, it was somehow so much different. Automatically, your hands were around his neck, and his around your waist, and together you stood there for a while. Rocking a little. No words necessary to convey what you were both thinking.
Finally.

it’s so easy
summary: Mikey and you had been secretly dating for over a year, and a lot has changed in both of your lives. The Kraang invasion, the people of New York, it all shook up the status quo. On a rooftop date, you and him spill the tea and reconnect about what's really important.
relationship: Mikey x F!reader

author's note: another request for @/snipersiniora!! 💕 (ngl i listened to the reel big fish cover of “it’s not easy” while writing so this is loosely inspired by it lol)
You don’t know why in all the time you’ve spent in New York, you’ve never been up on a rooftop. The view was amazing.
There were a couple of reasons as to why. Your hatred of high places, for one. With a strong enough breeze, you could go flying off your roof and become intimately familiar with the pavement below. Sometimes your neighbors would set up lawn chairs and shoot the shit, which was fine enough. You’ve just never been comfortable enough to want to join them. Lastly, it was a little difficult to skate on. The crowded atmosphere and uneven terrain made it the last place you would want to find yourself on a nice evening such as this.
But, the rooftop of your building had one upside: it was the place you got to see Michelangelo.
You clicked your heels together as you sat at an empty folding chair leftover from one of your upstairs neighbors. He wouldn’t show up for at least another 30 minutes, but you couldn’t help but jump the gun a bit and wait on the roof anyway. You’ve been keeping yourself busy, drawing random sketches onto your iPad.
Mikey and you had been friends for a while, but you officially started dating about a year ago. Not much has changed between you two, even after the Kraang invasion.
He was his same upbeat, eclectic self. But Mikey was also a little more confident. He carried himself differently, with a knowledge and experience you couldn’t even begin to relate to. You were a human, he was basically a superhero.
You bite at the tip of your drawing pen. Why was it whenever you started thinking about him and his brothers, you got inexplicably frustrated.
Was it because Raph, Donnie, and Leo still didn’t know you two were dating?
No, not really. You and Mikey weren’t really concerned with labels. You two were content to continue hanging out like you always had, just with a little extra…intimacy.
Maybe it was the fact that you had to hang out in precarious places such as your rooftop. Why couldn’t you just go to your apartment, or the lair?
“No, that’s not it.” You grumble to yourself, tapping the pen against your cheek.
“What’s not it?”
Mikey’s head appeared right above yours. He had just landed on the top of the wooden overhang you sat under, hanging like a spider.
Smiling, you sit up a little more straight to give his snout a peck.
“This…caricature. I just can’t capture his likeness. It’s missing something.”
Mikey blushed, dropping from his perch to sit next to you. “Allow me to offer you my artistic perspective!”
You happily oblige and show him your screen. Thinking about your fellow tenants had made you unintentionally start to draw little doodles that looked like them. You couldn’t help wanting to draw the people you knew. Your weird, human neighbors were quite the characters. Almost a little more weird than the turtles, in your opinion.
“Oh, I know this guy. Is this the one that knocked at your door at 3 AM asking for a DVD?”
Mikey pinched to zoom in on your sketch. You don’t know whether your drawing was that accurate or if he was just great with faces. Either way, you can’t help but smile even more.
“How did you know?” You snuggle closer to Mikey, leaning in. “He insisted that I had borrowed his copy of Cats. And I was like, ‘Dale, I already own it on Blu-ray. Why in the world would I steal your DVD?’”
Mikey fell into your lap in hysterics. “NYAHAHA—! You didn’t!”
You weren’t lying about the interaction having happened, but maybe you embellished the part at the end. You just loved making Mikey laugh.
“I did!” You beam.
“Your neighbors are so weird, even for me. And the only neighbors I have are the sewer gators.”
You set your iPad down on the patio, scooching Mikey to lie fully in your lap.
“Her name is Leatherhead and she’s lovely. I met her family once, on the way to the lair.”
Ignoring your sly tone, Mikey curled up into you like a lap cat. He was practically purring from how happy he was to finally be in your arms. It’s only been a couple of days since he’s had the opportunity to see you like this, and he was absolutely touch-starved.
“I missed you,” he sighs. “Patrol has been intense lately.”
His tired smile told you that he’d rather not get into it right now. You hum, petting the side of his head.
“I missed you too.”
Talking about his brothers wasn’t necessarily a taboo topic, but right now was the time for Mikey to relax, to unwind. You had plenty of stress in your own life too. Maybe it wasn’t as important as keeping the city safe, but it was tiresome to you nonetheless.
You both just wanted to forget about everything else, just be together. That was what these rooftop hangouts were for. And if that was good enough for Mikey, it was good enough for you.
But your smile faltered, if only for a moment.
Mikey’s eyes were closed as he continued to relish your head pets, unaware of your subtle shift in mood.
“Tell me more about your neighbors.” Turning his head, he speaks softly into your hand. “I love hearing about the people you live with. They’re interesting.”
“Well, this town is kinda ‘interesting people’ central.” You shrug.
“Yeah, I know. Are humans in other places like the ones here?”
Dragging your fingers along his textured skin, you think about it. You hadn’t really gotten around much, but you figured that NYC was a little unique compared to other major cities.
Your lips ease back into a lazy smile.
“Sort of. This place is sort of a big Melting Pot, y’know? It doesn’t really matter where you come from, everyone ends up wherever they are…for whatever reason.”
Mikey looks up at your face, his expression dripping with curiosity.
“What’s that mean?” He smirks.
“It means that people are weird. This place has a lot of people. Therefore, New York is just about the weirdest place there is!”
You two laugh, basking in each other's presence. After looking down at Mikey, you feel a little more normal. Work, life, all of that didn’t really matter anymore. Or at least, it shouldn’t.
“My neighbor’s aren’t all that interesting, Mikey. They’re just your run-of-the-mill folks, day drinking and sitting on the stoop.”
“Woah…” He gasps, sitting up. “Day drinking?”
Internally, you chide yourself. “I wasn’t supposed to say that.”
“Don’t worry, your secrets are safe with me!” He smiles, zipping his lips shut.
“I shouldn’t gossip…”
You roll your eyes a bit before they land on Mike. His eager, expectant expression was just too cute. Who could say no to a face like that?
Suddenly, you’re filled with bubbly energy.
“Okay, okay! Liz told me that Bill said that Debbie’s grandma was apparently—“
You whip your head around, making sure the coast is clear. You never knew who might be listening in, your neighbors were terribly nosy.
“She snuck Hennessy into the apartment meeting. Last Sunday, when we got together with the building manager, they had coffee and stuff…”
Mikey quickly scrambles over to grab a free chair before sitting directly in front of you. Enraptured, he places his head on his hands.
“And she added a little extra somethin’ into her mug? How scandalous!” He wiggles his eye ridge, fully getting into the story.
You launch forward and gesture wildly with your hands. “No, that’s the thing! She put the booze…in the coffee pot.”
Mikey’s smile dropped.
“You don’t mean—“
Grimly, you nod your head.
“I mean a whole room of people, shnackered at 10 AM. On God’s day.” You chortle.
He covers his mouth in genuine shock. You chuckle, looking at his wide-eyed expression.
“And I know that Liz was the one who ratted her out, the bitch. She of all people would know what Hennessy tastes like, I saw her drink 5 whole cups with my own eyes!”
Mikey moves his hands away, his voice hushed. “She sounds like a bitch.”
You kick your legs up and recline farther in your chair. “You don’t know the half of it.”
Liz was your next door neighbor. She always had a knack for being right outside your door whenever you stepped out to go to work. You left early everyday just to accommodate for the inevitable one-sided conversation. She was old, and very lonely, so you didn’t mind her chatting your ear off.
But she was also very bitter. Even more so after the Kraang invasion.
“I swear, I keep seeing those…frog men. They flip around my windows at all hours of the night, whooping and hollering up a storm! Who do those punks think they are?”
You’ve seen a lot of different reactions from people after the turtles officially became public knowledge. Usually, it was just casual disinterest or disdain from the more conservative crowd. Old people, cops, etcetera.
But for some reason, the people you lived with just happened to be either really old or in law enforcement. They hated all mutants, and they didn’t have any problem letting you know about it.
You nearly get lost in your own thoughts before Mikey nudges your knee.
“I think she’s the one who threw a flower pot at my head that one time.” He chuckles, rubbing the back of his noggin.
Sighing, you lightly knock his leg with your foot. “Yeah, that’s Liz. If rent wasn’t so good here, I’d move out in a second.”
“Aw, they’re not so bad!” Mikey shoots a toothy smile at you. “It’s not the worst thing someone’s thrown at me.”
You meet his grin with a small frown.
“How do you do it?”
Mikey cocks his head. “Is that a rhetorical question?”
“Ugh, no? Yes?” You lean back and stare up into the sky. It was a clear day, not a cloud in sight.
“You’d think people would be a little more thankful to the guys who saved their asses from alien invaders.”
You seethed, thinking about all the nasty side comments and quiet whisperings you’ve overheard in your hallways.
“Hey, don’t get angry on my account.” Mikey reaches out and gives you a good-natured pat on the leg. “My family’s used to people wanting to kill us all the time, so a flower pot is actually a nice change of pace.”
“I guess so.”
Then, you realize it.
This was why you were so stressed out. Whenever you think about the turtles, you can’t help but associate them with all the negative energy you’ve been surrounded in at home. You thought you had thicker skin, but you feel your heart start to sink.
“You know, it’s funny.”
Mikey sighs, musing to himself.
“Sometimes I think about how weird it’s been lately. Splinter always told us it was important for us to not be seen, to stick to the shadows. It was because of the ninja thing, mostly. But I know he was trying to keep us...”
He picks nervously at his palm, tracing the lines of his hand.
“Safe?” You ask.
“Sheltered.”
There was a sadness creeping into his voice. You hated the sound. It was just too bittersweet for you to handle. You cautiously look back to Mikey, waiting for him to finish.
“But, then there was April. And Casey, later on. I thought there might actually be a chance for us to make it out in the human world. The whole yokai/mutant thing with Draxum was…well, a whole thing.”
Mikey briefly looked back up to make sure he wasn’t boring you too much. Not that he didn’t like to talk with you about stuff like this, it was just a little hard.
When you give his hand an encouraging squeeze, he sighs.
“But, I knew we kinda wouldn’t have a choice to stay in the shadows anymore. After the Kraang, that is. Leo told us we wouldn’t exactly be  getting the red carpet treatment.”
“Humans are stupid.” You huff.
“You’re a human, and I don’t think you’re stupid at all.”
Mikey squeezed your hand back, a sad smile forming on his face.
It wasn’t like he needed the entirety of New York to accept him and his brothers. With April, Casey, and especially you, he had all the human approval that he could ever want. He searched your face, and he knew that you were starting to slip.
You try to swallow down the lump in your throat before speaking up.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up all this.” You run your thumb along the edge of Mikey’s.
Mikey sits up, puffing out his chest. “That’s enough. I will not have you getting sad because of me!”
Suddenly, he stands up, bringing you along with him.
“I’m not sad, I’m mad!” You scoff, rubbing your nose on your sleeve. “I ought to throw ceramic vases at Liz, see how she likes it.”
Tutting you, Mikey leads you out into the middle of the roof. There was a concrete slab next to the door that led back into the building, where you had placed your backpack earlier. You watch as Mikey sneaks around, dipping behind your back, to dig through your bag.
“You know a good way to get rid of all that anger?” Mikey whispers, rising up.
“What are you scheming back there?” You cross your arms and spin around. “Stop messing with my—“
When you turn around, you see Mikey holding up your trusty pair of skates right up to your face. He held them by the shoelaces, a cheeky grin peeking around them.
“Skate the hate away, baby!”
“That’s a beautiful thought,” you smirk. “But I couldn’t.”
“Oh, then let me help you.”
You gasp, feeling Mikey drag you over to your chair to push you back into it. Once you fall, he moves down to pull off your sneakers and lace up your skates.
Blushing, you watch him lovingly guide your feet in. He sticks his tongue out as he ties little bunny-ear knots.
“Mikey…!” You giggle, his fingers tickling your ankle. “This is too much.”
Whenever you started to become sad, you could always count on him to lift your spirits back up. You tried to stay as endlessly positive and go-with-the-flow as Mikey, but it was difficult sometimes. The inner optimist in you was finding it more and more hard to navigate the nihilistic world you found yourselves in.
“There! Now c’mon.” He smiles.
Mikey lifts you back up, pulling you to glide over to the concrete by the door.
You can’t help the goofy smile that creeps in when he spins you around. The flat surface was just big enough for you to skate a couple of inches away from him.
Your shoulders slump, all at once feeling happy again.
“What did I do to deserve you?” You fold your hands behind your back and circle Mikey.
Chuckling, he tries following your face as it spins around him.
“Nothing. You were just in the right place at the right time.”
He stood there idly watching you elegantly sail past him. It was fun constantly making him have to twist around to keep eye contact with you, and you feel laughter begin to bubble up.
You snatch his hand, forcing him into an awkward dance with you.
“Care to join me?”
You grin from ear to ear, placing a hand upon the small of his back. Or rather, his shell.
Surprisingly, Mikey is caught off guard by your bold move. You watch with glee as his face flushes a bright pink. He stutters, a little bashful at being led around by you instead of the other way around.
“I g-guess I don’t have a choice?”
You pull him closer, pressing up against his plastron. “Nope!”
The two of you spin around in lazy circles for a while. The blazing sunset on the horizon brought a new feeling of warmth and comfort, a heavenly glow lighting up your eyes. The entire city looked like it was bathed in orange, Mikey’s signature color.
It was a good look for New York.
“Wow…” You sigh, marveling at the beautiful world around you.
“I know.”
Mikey shifts a bit, managing to stand an inch or two higher than he usually is. You were both about the same height, at least that was what you kept insisting to him. But he wanted to look down at you for once. He wanted to hold you like you held him.
“You make me feel accepted, you know.”
You blink against the light of the sun before looking back at Mikey.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. You just let me be me. That’s all I need. You make me feel all…sparkly.”
You bite your lower lip, holding back a chuckle.
“Sparkly, huh? That’s a unique adjective.”
That was the best way Mikey could describe it. You and him had so much in common, mostly in terms of your hobbies and your personalities. But there was just something about being around you so much that showed him how different you were. In a good way, obviously.
You were human, he was a mutant. There was the ninja-ing as well. You both had wildly different life experiences.
Slotting your head between his neck and his shoulder, he hugs you tightly.
“What about you?”
His warm breath makes you shudder, practically melting into his hold.
“You make me feel…”
You move your skate to engage the rubber stopper. The world was seriously starting to spin.
“Shiny.”
“Hey, are you copying me?”
Playfully scoffing, Mikey picks you right off of your feet and spins you around again. You laugh into each other's embrace, and you hold on for dear life as he pins you securely to his chest.
“It’s true! You make me feel all shiny and new.”
For a second, you feel your thoughts wander back to your earlier conversation. You don’t like having to shift into serious mode, but you needed to say just one more thing. Mikey moves away to get a better look at your face.
“I know it’s not easy. Having to save people when they don’t even—“
“No, it’s not. But when I think about all the people who do care, who do understand me…”
Mikey smiles, tipping your chin up slightly to look at him. He always wanted to do that to you.
“It’s easy. It gets easier everyday. All I have to do is have you right here.”
Then, your heart flutters in your chest. You didn’t notice it before, but Mikey stood a little taller than you now. You don’t know if he had a growth spurt or something, but there he was. Looking at you, his eyes sparkling in the sunset, you knew there was a lot more to Mikey than anyone thought.
Even you.
“I love rooftops,” you sigh, moving up to brush your lips against his cheek.
Angling his head around, he leans into you.
 “I love rooftops too.”
