On Thanksgiving Day I drove into Washington, DC to visit the Hirshhorn Museum. I usually take the train to DC, but with the holiday, trains were infrequent, traffic was light, and parking was free on DC streets. I had not been to the Hirshhorn since the pre-pandemic month of February in 2020. I was pleasantly surprised to find an exhibit of Contemporary Chinese Photography. The photos were amazing. It reminded me that what I do is take pictures, where artists use photography as a means of self-expression. I am looking forward to the exhibition’s catalogue when it is published.
When I left the museum I walked over to the dining area and snapped the top picture I have posted above. I then wandered around the sculpture garden and then over to the National Gallery of Art. I returned to the Hirshhorn about an hour later to buy a chocolate cupcake and a caffè latte. I used to drink lattes daily. Since the pandemic we have been drinking mostly instant coffee or the occasional pour over coffee at home. It was wonderful to sit and enjoy the treat on a pleasant November afternoon. As I sat at the table, I picked up my camera a snapped another photo of the gallery’s courtyard. The bottom photo I posted above is the one I just described.
When I looked at my photos when I got home, I was surprised that the two unedited photos, taken an hour apart, were so similar. Maybe I’ve gotten into a rut on how I compose a photo.

Announcing the representation of Donald Judd and Judd Foundation
September 16, 2021
Tumblr media
Gagosian is pleased to announce the representation of
DONALD JUDD AND JUDD FOUNDATION
__________ It is impossible to consider the history of American art without Donald Judd. He played an essential role in the development of modernism and was as respected by his peers as he is revered by artists working today. We got to know each other in New York in the early 1980s and he was one of the first artists whose work I really admired. The use of color and proportion, together with a unique combination of rigor and elegance, was incredibly powerful and remains essential today. Being a partner in realizing his vision and presenting his work as he intended is a great honor for me and the gallery. —Larry Gagosian Gagosian is pleased to announce the representation of the work of Donald Judd and Judd Foundation. The partnership underscores the gallery’s more than forty-year commitment to critical artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Donald Judd (1928–1994) produced visual and written work that shifted the course of modern art. Starting out as a painter in the 1950s, he began making three-dimensional works in the early 1960s, aiming to make objects that were free of the illusionism associated with painting. The aluminum, plexiglass, and plywood objects utilized the neutrality of their industrial mediums, and Judd’s production methods emphasized schematic variation and spatial definition through form. His interdisciplinary focus included architecture as well as furniture, and he was a prolific critic and essayist whose writing clarified his own artistic intentions as well as insightfully reflected on the work of his contemporaries. From March 12 to September 4, 2020, in association with Judd Foundation, Gagosian presented Judd’s untitled, 1980, at the 21st Street gallery in New York. The large-scale unpainted plywood work had not been shown in New York since it was originally exhibited at Castelli Gallery in 1981; the expansive dimensions of the Gagosian space made it an ideal site for the eighty-foot-wide installation. The exhibition, Artwork: 1980, coincided with a retrospective of Judd’s work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. An exhibition catalogue has recently been published by Gagosian. It includes a foreword by Flavin Judd and new essays by Martha Buskirk and Rudi Fuchs, alongside extensive photography of the artwork, schematic drawings from the 2020 installation, and historical interviews. Donald Judd was born in 1928 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and died in 1994 in New York. Collections include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate, London; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1968 and 1988); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands (1970, traveled to Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; Kunstverein Hannover, Germany; and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (1975); and Tate Modern, London (2004, traveled to Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany; and Kunstmuseum Basel). Judd established Judd Foundation in 1977 to preserve his art, spaces, libraries, and archives in New York and in Marfa, Texas. He founded the Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati in 1986 for the permanent installation of his and his contemporaries’ large-scale works. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, presented a major retrospective of Judd’s work from March 1, 2020, to January 9, 2021. _____ Donald Judd in his architecture studio, Marfa, Texas, 1993. Fatima Shbair wins the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award
© photo: Fatima Shbair / text: IWMF
Tumblr media
Brazilian and Iranian-Canadian women photographers also recognized
[September 29, 2021 – WASHINGTON, DC] – Today, the International Women’s Media Foundation presented Palestinian freelance photojournalist Fatima Shbair with the seventh annual Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. Since 2015, the international award has honored women photojournalists who take risks to capture humanity in dire circumstances, illuminating underreported and sometimes silenced stories. The prestigious award was created in honor of German Associated Press photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2014.
Shbair’s portfolio rose above more than 100 applications that represented women photojournalists from more than 40 countries. At 24 years old, Shbair is the youngest winner of the ‘Anja Award’ to-date and is a self-taught, freelance photojournalist. Her portfolio, “11 Days of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict,” includes unique moments of tension, violence, devastation, and hope all captured from Gaza City in May 2021.
“Life here is different, and I had to find a way to [show] what was happening,” says Shbair from Gaza. “Despite successive wars and tragedies, people here dig deep in search of hope, and their lives matter – it’s my responsibility to convey their voices to the world.” Shbair continued: “Anja’s work gives us the determination to continue on the path despite the difficulties. I can’t find the words to describe how honored I feel to receive this award.”
The IWMF also recognized two other women photojournalists with honorable mentions in the competition: Brazilian photojournalist Adriana Zehbrauskas, currently working in Phoenix, Arizona, and Iranian-Canadian photographer Kiana Hayeri, who is based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Zehbrauskas’ portfolio included energetic yet sensitive portrayals of migration and the toll of COVID-19 in Latin America, while Hayeri’s work spotlighted the rising conflict and looming crisis in Afghanistan from an alternative perspective.
“Within the past two years so many communities worldwide have been pushed to the brink in order to survive,” says the IWMF’s Executive Director Elisa Lees Muñoz. “Anja’s focus on resilience, hope and the intimate struggles people face in times of crisis is a legacy we turn to now more than ever. The IWMF is thrilled to recognize this year’s winner, Fatima Shbair, as well as Kiana Hayeri and Adriana Zehbrauskas in Anja’s name.”
This year’s jury included Corinne Dufka, Jacqueline Larma, Robert Nickelsberg, Tara Pixley, and Bernadette Tuazon. Together, the committee issued the following statement on this year’s Anja Award selection: “The portfolios from this year’s winner and honorees draw in the viewer and continue to grow with impact and intimacy. Each photojournalist demonstrated remarkable tenacity and developed clear and close bonds with her subject, accessing what few photographers can convey. We congratulate Fatima, Adriana and Kiana on their remarkable work; Anja would be proud to recognize each of you.”
Anja Niedringhaus was a recipient of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award in 2005. The winner’s $20,000 prize is made possible by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Honorees’ images and captions, biographies and headshots are available for media use with proper attribution; to inquire further, please contact Charlotte Fox ([email protected]).
Courage in Photojournalism Award Winner
This year’s winner, Fatima Shbair, is a Palestinian freelance photojournalist from Gaza City.
After studying business administration for three years at Al-Azhar University in Gaza, Shbair switched to study journalism and began concentrating on photojournalism in 2019 through independent study and working in the field.
In 2020, Shbair began to receive assignments from several international agencies, including Getty Images and The New York Times, to cover her hometown as tensions continued between Israel and Palestine. Her assignments increased in 2021 but came with the challenge of working during a global pandemic, which also strained and ravaged her own community. Shbair is currently a contributor to Everyday Middle East and continues her work with Getty Images. Her work has been exhibited in Palestine, the UAE, London, and Paris.
As a women photojournalist, Shbair’s gender and line of work are challenged daily, due to the conservative nature of society in Gaza, and the prevenance of male photojournalists in the industry.
Juror Dufka noted, “Fatima’s stunning photo essay is one of the strongest entries the jury had the pleasure of reviewing these past several years. Her work with light, angles, and composition is remarkable as she weaves through a forest of destruction in her own backyard.”
Juror Larma continued, “She clearly spent a great deal of time with her subjects and pursued what’s beyond obvious for most photojournalists. Within these 11 days, Fatima took the time to pursue intimate storytelling, showing us both the physical and emotional toll on her subjects while operating in extreme danger.”
From Gaza, Shbair further remarked: “Courage is not just about taking risks; being human first is the true courage of a photojournalist. It is a great honor to receive this award, especially in Anja’s image, as we are all still learning from her creativity, journey, and pursuit of the truth.”

Courage in Photojournalism Honorees
Honoree Kiana Hayeri was born and partially raised in Iran and was first introduced to photography in high school after her family moved to Canada. Hayeri left Toronto during her final year of university and traveled to Afghanistan on assignment in 2013, where she’s remained.
In 2021, Hayeri received the Robert Capa Gold Medal for her photographic series, “Where Prison is Kind of a Freedom,” documenting the lives of Afghan women in Herat Prison. In 2020, she received the Tim Hetherington Visionary award and was named as the 6th recipient of the James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting.
Hayeri was an IAAB fellow in 2011 and completed a CIS artist residency at MIT University in 2012. In 2014, she was named as one of the emerging photographers by PDN 30 Under 30. In 2016, she was selected for the IWMF’s cross-border reporting fellowship to work on her proposed story in Rwanda and DRC and was selected as the recipient of Chris Hondros Fund Award as an emerging photographer. In 2017, Hayeri received a grant from European Journalism Center to do a series of reporting on gender equality out of Afghanistan and received Stern Grant in 2018 to continue her work on the state of mental health among Afghan women.
Hayeri is a Senior TED fellow, and her work has appeared in The New York Times, Le Monde, Harper’s Magazine, Washington Post, NPR, Monocle Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Marie Clare, Glamour, The Globe and Mail, Al Jazeera America, and CBC, among others.
When reviewing Hayeri’s portfolio, Tuazon noted that, “These images can only be captured by a woman with her specific access and lens. Every single day in this portfolio demonstrates unbelievable courage as the women and children she illuminates convey a harrowing narrative.”

Adriana Zehbrauskas is a Brazilian documentary photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. Her work is largely focused on issues related to migration, religion, human rights, underrepresented communities, and the violence resulting from the drug trade in Mexico, Central and South America.
Zehbrauskas contributes regularly to The New York Times, UNICEF and BuzzFeed News and her work has been widely published in outlets such as The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Stern, Le Monde and El País, among others.
She is the recipient of a 2021 Maria Moors Cabot Prize, a New York Press Club Award in Feature-Science Medicine and Technology in the Newspaper category for the article “Zika’s Legacy: Catastrophic Consequences of a Continuing Crisis (NY-2018) and a POY International (2019). She was a finalist for the Premio Gabo (2018) and received two Honorable Mentions at the Julia Margaret Cameron Award (2018).
Zehbrauskas is one of the three photographers profiled in the documentary “Beyond Assignment” (USA, 2011, produced by The Knight Center for International Media and the University of Miami. She’s a recipient of the first Getty Images Instagram Grant and was awarded Best Female Photojournalist -Troféu Mulher Imprensa (Brazil). Her mobile photography work was selected by Time Magazine for the “29 Instagrams That Defined the World in 2014″ and her project on Faith in Brazil and Mexico was awarded an Art & Worship World Prize by the Niavaran Artistic Creation Foundation.
She’s an instructor with the International Center of Photography (ICP- NY), the World Press Photo Foundation, Gabriel García Márquez’s Fundación Gabo, the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop and serves as a jury member to dozens of grants and awards worldwide.
Commenting on Zehbrauskas’ portfolio, juror Pixley said, “The strength of her images is indicative of a lengthy time occupying difficult spaces despite both health and safety concerns. Her consistency across countries, issues and movements reveals the same, unique human connection.”

Black History Month is a celebration and honor of the contributions African Americans have made to United States History. Washington, DC is home to many African Americans who have contributed in some way to our culture and history. The Shaw neighborhood is most known for its prominent Black history and figures such as Jazz Musician Duke Ellington. Later on, the neighborhood was nicknamed “The Heart of Chocolate City” for being the place that many escaped slaves called home and established a numerous amount of businesses for the African American population.
After walking through the Shaw neighborhood, take a stroll along Howard Theatre’s Walk of Fame, beginning at the Shaw-Howard Metro Station and ending at the façade of the theatre. The Walk of Fame honors 15 Black Cultural icons such as Marvin Gaye, Chuck Brown, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Chris Suspect
My interest in photography started in my early 20s while I was a bass player for a punk band. I used to go to the library to browse photo books and then make copies of the photos I liked for band flyers. I was primarily interested in war, crime, and political photography because those graphic images lent themselves to great promotional posters for the kind of music we played.
Fast forward 15 years and I wound up getting a point-and-shoot camera to document the birth of my son in 2005. I read the manual and would go out on my own to see what I could do creatively with the camera settings.
After some positive feedback on Flickr, many stolen images by bloggers, and requests by a few magazines, I decided to pursue photography seriously by purchasing a DSLR in 2011. The following year, I enrolled in a color photography class as a continuing education student at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. It was at this point I started doing “street photography.” Although I wasn’t really sure what made a good street photo at this point, I knew what I liked and that’s what was important for me. I was primarily shooting film - color and black and white - with a Nikon F2 with a 50mm lens.
Here are some of my early street photos:
Tumblr media
This image of friars taking shelter from the rain under a large tree was taken in Washington, DC, in 2011. I shot it from my car window. What I saw in this image was an amusing take on religion. Not even God could protect these men of the cloth from the ravages of Mother Nature.
Tumblr media
This photograph of a man hanging off the back of a city bus was taken in DC’s Chinatown in 2011. It reminded me of one of those absurd action shots I admired when I was making punk flyers in my 20s. I’m not sure if this is a great picture, but it would work for a show flyer. I always enjoy capturing stuff like this when I see it.
Tumblr media
This photograph of three people walking by what appears to be a body bag was taken in Washington, DC, during the course of my color photography class at the Corcoran in 2012. What attracted me to this scene was the apparent disregard of the “body” as people streamed by on their evening commute. This image was in my first group show at the Corcoran.
Tumblr media
I got this snapshot as I was leaving work for a lunch break in 2011. I was fortunate with the placement of the balloons; this was the first time I realized that obscuring someone’s head could make for a more interesting piece. It also reminds me a bit of Mickey Mouse. This image sparked my ongoing interest in trying to place balloons on people’s heads. It’s quite hard to do well. These balloons don’t like to remain stationary!
Tumblr media
This image of a photographer taking a shot of two people kissing was also made in DC’s Chinatown, in 2012. It was around this time I started focusing on trying to include more objects/subjects in a frame that would either compliment or juxtapose each other. I sometimes use this image to promote my street photography workshops. I think it speaks to the nature of street photography in general.
Since 2012, I have come a long way in photography and have branched out to focus on longer-term projects. In fact, this year I plan on publishing four mini-books, or high-end zines if you will. The first will be Gratuity Included, a fevered dream sequence of raw imagery taken in the heat of the night. It will be released March 15, 2020, on my website, www.chrissuspect.com.

As the slope rises slightly to the west, it was possible to meet the provisions of the plan with the height relative to the surrounding area, despite the design of four storeys. Windows on the northern slope of the roof almost do not affect its surface, thanks to which the body is very compact and homogeneous, especially after closing the shutters. The compositional lines follow the landscape, and the volume of the design only raises on the top of a small hill on which it is designed.

GERHARD RICHTER Cage Paintings
April 19–June 26, 2021 541 West 24th Street, New York __________ One can see, or rather hear, a great example in John Cage’s work of how extensively, cleverly, and sensitively he treats coincidence in order to make music out of it. —Gerhard Richter Gagosian is pleased to present Gerhard Richter’s Cage paintings, which were shown at Gagosian Beverly Hills in an exhibition that opened in December 2020. The series was a highlight of the artist’s recent retrospective, Gerhard Richter: Painting After All, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Throughout his career, Richter has navigated between naturalism and abstraction, painting and photography, exploring the conceptual, historical, and material implications of various mediums without ideological restraint. In paintings he produced while studying at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany, in the early 1960s, his imagery derived from magazine and newspaper photographs; he has continued this exploration throughout his career, manipulating it in ways that have inspired subsequent generations of painters. Richter approaches the concept of abstraction with similar rigor, employing varying combinations of process, expressiveness, and chance. The resultant works range from austere monochromes and mirrors to dynamic, layered, and richly chromatic compositions.
Characterized by their large scale and concentrated materiality, the six Cage paintings (2006) are constructed from intersecting lines, fields, and swaths of color applied with a broad squeegee. By varying the force with which he dragged this tool across the canvas, Richter added and, crucially, removed areas of pigment to generate a highly unpredictable surface. The paintings are titled after influential composer, artist, and philosopher John Cage (1912–1992), whose music Richter was listening to when he produced the series. Cage’s pursuit of indeterminacy in music, reflected in his use of the I Ching and other chance operations as compositional tools, has always resonated with Richter, who has compared his own process to the act of arranging musical notes into a score. Shown in conjunction with the Cage paintings is a group of abstract drawings Richter made in a single, characteristically intensive working session during the summer of 2020. Richter’s drawings function as autonomous works and have always been an important part of his oeuvre. In the compositions on view, he makes clear use of an eraser to help direct the graphite, emphasizing the self-reflexive nature of drawing, and echoing, perhaps, the subtractive strategy that the creation of the Cage paintings entails. A catalogue, including an introduction by Larry Gagosian and a conversation between the artist and Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, will be published to coincide with the exhibition. A forthcoming episode of Gagosian Premieres will celebrate the exhibition with Obrist, featuring a musical performance by Patti Smith and new choreography created and performed by Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener in response to the work. Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932, and lives and works in Cologne, Germany. His work resides in museum collections throughout the world. Major solo exhibitions include Forty Years of Painting, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2002, traveled to Art Institute of Chicago; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC); Portraits, National Portrait Gallery, London (2009); Panorama, Tate Modern, London (2011–12, traveled to Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, and Centre Pompidou, Paris); ATLAS, Kunsthalle im Lipsiusbau, Dresden, Germany (2012); Drawings and Watercolors 1957–2008, Musée du Louvre, Paris (2012); Streifen & Glas, Galerie Neue Meister, Albertinum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Germany (2013–14, traveled to Kunst Museum Winterthur, Switzerland); Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland (2014); Birkenau, Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, Germany (2016); New Paintings, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (2017); National Gallery, Prague (2017); The Life of Images, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2017–18); Over Schilderen, Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, Belgium (2017); Abstraktion, Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Germany (2018); Seascapes, Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain (2019); Painting After All, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2020); and 100 Selbstbildnisse, Kunst Museum Winterthur, Switzerland (2020).
