More favourite stupid video game tropes, Hallowe’en edition:
Games where you start out playing as a character who’s presented as a totally plausible protagonist, but then they’re horribly killed and the actual player character is someone different
Tutorials that describe the basic mechanics from an in-character perspective in a way that seems like a silly fourth-wall-breaking joke, then much later this casual blurring of the fourth wall is revealed to have horrifying narrative implications
Fakeouts where it looks like you messed up and died, but really it’s a puzzle and you have to do something during the fake gameover screen to “solve” it
Reality-warping powers being represented as the ability to fuck with the game-mechanical substrate; e.g., teleportation in a 2D action game being represented by letting the player screen-wrap
Brainfuck segments where you’re suddenly playing as the monster and you have to have a boss fight against your own player character or something
Puzzles where the obstacles are the appendages of some unfathomably huge unseen creature, and you have to, like, poke its tentacles in the correct order to get them to move out of the way
Subtly impossible level layouts, like a corridor that makes four or five left turns in a row without intersecting itself
When a game whose narrative has heretofore acknowledged no diegetic separation between the player and the player character suddenly breaks its own rules and addresses the player directly
When you’re in a suspiciously calm and peaceful area, then something happens to alter your perceptions and it’s revealed that it was all an illusion and the Happy Shiny People were secretly zombie demon ghosts all along, and they all turn to face the camera and go “EEEEEEEE”
When there’s a guy with a detachable head

Which country is the biggest exporter of video games?
Though China, Japan and the United States make great leaps and bounds in video game production each year, it is a small country in the Austrian/Bolivian borderlands that makes more tons of video game per capita than anywhere else in the world.
The small nation of San Sundertail was founded in 1981 by Mario von Wiisportz as a social experiment. Surviving at first on the quality of their mining craft and production of ceramic plastic, and mostly metal gears, their game industry grew quickly after. The government of the country was based on a tetrad of rulers who answered their nation's call of duty including the Prime Minister, the Prime Echoes Minister, and sadly another minister who was dismissed for Prime Corruption. Rumors of another arrest circulated but a 4th Prime still has yet to released. Hopefully a more straight-line tetrad will fall into place soon and clear the growing mess.
Sadly as a result, the nation is plagued by crimes such as grand theft auto, assassinations according to some kind of creed, and even the raiding of several tombs. Leaders insist that there is no inherent evil resident to their country, but the U.N. Squadron has declared this to be a fantasy, and the final one that they'd accept. Being a far cry from peaceful, they feel they now have just cause to enter the uncharted regions nearby and open a diplomatic portal, no matter what the fallout of such a commanding and conquering action may be.
This got depressing cuz all the franchises have negative or violent names. I'm gonna go take my mind off it with something else, something with serene rolling landscapes and lots of rest and quiet. Here we go, "Silent Hill" sounds nice, I'll try that.

The video game Undertale states that monsters do not bleed, but instead turn to dust when they die. However, Deltarune, which is related to Undertale, has the character Susie, who is a monster, note that “everybody bleeds”. When questioned about this discrepancy, creator Toby Fox stated “oh for fuck’s sake I did it again. Damn it! I keep messing up! Why me!?”

[ VD: A screen recording of a shared memory from Sky: Children of the Light. The caption reads, “🕵️Mystery🕵️help”. The player stands still while talking. Transcript below.
“There are some strange things here, and maybe you too had the same problems as me…”
“For a few days now, I noticed that the area was completely empty, that the plants I burned mysteriously reappeared a few seconds later. And then there are other things…”
“When I do the geyser event (here), I see huge honks crossing all over the island, and coming from the other side of the mountain, when I move there, I don’t see anyone”
“Apart from a torch and a crab stuffed toy”
“The spirits are different, to begin with their color is much darker, when I decide to relive their memory, it starts to follow me walking near me…”
“And when I run they chase me very quickly, it usually lasts 20 seconds, but it’s very disturbing”
“The crabs in the cave clump together and form strange and changing symbols, and finally there is also sometimes only one player here, but he is in the fetal position dressed as I am currently”
“There are other disturbing things, but I can’t say more…Until next time maybe…”
End VD. ]

My hope for this post is to impart some hope. I’ve been making this stuff for a very long time. There is a large world of alternatives out there, many of them deserving a lot more attention. Each offer their own vibrant communities, support, philosophies, and mentalities surrounding making a game.
With the recent Unity news... whether they walk it back or not, they've made it clear they can't be trusted. Nathalie Lawhead, digital artist, video game developer, and game blogger, put together a reflection on this move, the way it follows a similar trajectory as the death of Flash.
And they have a truly impressive list, with descriptions, explanations, and uses, of other game engines and game-making software. Many of them are independent or open-source. If you are a game developer or interested in game development, it's a great resource to think about in the wake of Unity tanking itself.
