In just one month, approximately 462 hectares (4.6 million m²) of woodland, "notably pines and oaks, as well as around 20 hectares of centuries-old olive groves," have been destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, said Georges Mitri, Director of the Land and Natural Resources Programme at Balamand University. Since the escalation of tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli army on Oct. 8, the latter has used white phosphorus to set fire to forests and fields in border areas. The 1980 Geneva Convention, which Israel has not signed, prohibits the use of white phosphorous on civilians and in civilian areas due to its devastating effects on humans, animals and the environment.

Amid the ongoing economic crisis, the attacks targeting olive groves ahead of harvest season have a major negative impact on the local economy in the area. "Traditionally, people gather around the olive trees, harvest their crops, press their oil together... A big part of their lives is being lost," lamented Younes. “The olive trees being burned are centuries old," he pointed out. “If we were to replant them today, how long would it be before these fields became productive?” Giving an estimate of the economic losses attributed to the daily fires in the South, Mitri put the figure at nearly 20 million dollars. In the long term, Younes is particularly concerned about the environmental impact of the phosphorus bombs. "We have no choice but to wait until the end of hostilities before assessing the situation on the ground," he said. In Younes’ view, the greater the rate of absorption of phosphorus into the soil and water, the greater the risk of dramatic long-term consequences on Lebanon’s environment.

I'll add here that southern Lebanon has never fully recovered from 2006. There are still unexploded cluster bombs in the ground, killing and maiming people. There is still chemical contamination. The economic impact on agriculture has never been fully recouped. The cancer rates are still elevated and unaddressed. The labor structure and which crops are grown changed after 2006 and have never reverted. I remember weeping watching the bombing of Gaza in 2021 as I was in the middle of writing a paper about the long term legacies of the July War in Lebanon, with these additional long-term violences of the bombing at the forefront of my mind along with the immediate deaths and tragedies. This is a horrifying compounding of an existing injury, at a time when Lebanon is in economic free fall and (as the article also explains) in the middle of fire season, and with firefighters unable to do much because the area is. being bombed.

A war is an ecological disaster as much as it is any of the other kinds. When it is over, when they win, when the Republic becomes the Empire and begins to inflict its peace across the galaxy -

There's an army of men, bought and paid for, that it doesn't need. Can't demobilise or repatriate. Battle droids you can wipe and recycle. Men? Not so much. Especially the ones that are injured too badly to make it as stormtroopers and not badly enough to not be a threat if they chose to organise themselves against the Empire.

In the years of their fighting they have left a considerable mess behind them, across Christophis, Felucia, Geonosis. Convenient, then, fitting, that they're the ones who get to clean it up, ammunition dumps and burnt-out hulks and UXO and the accretions disks of dead capital ships with the frozen corpses of their dead brothers amidst the rest. Exploded buildings and rubble and twisted beams and jagged skyscrapers like broken teeth. Shipbreakers and smelters.

The Empire skimps on their protective gear. Alternatively it is fiscally responsible by mandating contracts are awarded to the lower bidder. Whatever the reason, the clones die to UXO, to vacuum, to dormant commando droids. Not many people care; at least they're being useful. Might has well get all the use out of them while they can.

Some deaths take longer; fine dust to scar up their lungs, or improperly stored tibanna rotting through the tanks to pollute the soil. Felucia's microbes slowly wending their up the spinal cord to erupt in the brain years later.

So they're broken up into smaller groups. Ground down by attrition and exhaustion. Some desert. Some find a place among established scavenger crews. Many die, and their deaths are logged in Imperial spreadsheets by Imperial bureaucrats who go home to their loving families and think nothing of it.

Explosive Hazard Awareness Cards for Ukraine

A new project aims to increase unexploded ordnance hazard awareness with playing cards comes from Fenix Insight and Cold War Collectables who kindly sent me a pack. Each card features a photograph and designation of various ordnance ranging from small arms, grenades, RPGs, anti-tank mines to cluster munitions, Grad rockets and air dropped thermobaric bombs.

87. does your writing style change depending on the genre you write?

I don't think so, no. So far, I think practice is the only thing that has affected my style. I've only ever written intimate moments between couples under stress in the setting of military action-adventure. In the future I'm planning on trying to get myself to write some longer stories, so we'll see what happens to my style then. I think I'm going to have to ease up a bit and just let words flow where they want to.

58. what is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were writing it?

HAHAHA this is a great question. Let me consult my history ...

... It was "ruthlessness synonyms." For Rosary. I went with "brutality" instead, which worked much better for the sentence in question, since I'm such a fan of well placed alliteration.

The sentence in question: maybe he'd truly lost it, getting wet over bone dry brutality ...

I have an atrocious working memory, so I often look up synonyms when I know that something isn't quite what I want. More interestingly, one of my googles for that fic was "parts of a barn."

One thing I love most about writing fiction is that you have to learn so goddamn much about random topics that you had no idea that you'd need to know anything about. It's such a humbling, enlightening, and interesting process. Because I will go to every length to get the bottom of the iceberg established before I really put something together. It's often a messy process that happens all at the same time, unfortunately for my order-loving-brain.

I've been in actual barns many times growing up, but I always do my due diligence with the research part of a fic, due to the aforementioned shitty memory-for-details. I tend to remember emotions and not facts. I blame this on how many times I've been hit in the head.

2. talk about a notable time a narrative or character has looked you dead in the eyes and said “fuck your plan, here’s what we’re actually doing.”

LMAO I feel like this happens in some way every time. It almost always happens in sexual situations. I have an idea how I want the characters to interact, but it's never quite right, and I have to let them lead the show. I tend to experience a lot of resistance until I give up and just let them do what they want to do. The most notable time this happened was in UXO, between Ordo and Fi. I wanted Ordo to be pretty dominant, but turned out that Fi was going to run the show and let Ordo know what he was missing. I couldn't get the sex scene right until I just went with my gut feeling about it. Learned a lesson with that one. :p

(i count them as one because of how much i love them and also to be able to count another album in my top). dear reader and yoyok are also some of my faves off midnights!! i must confess it took some time for the album to grow on me (in contrast to folklore, which was love at first sight and listen) but i agree on it being very raw and honest. on that note, seeing taylor grow and mature, not just as a person but as a musician and lyricist, is a very special thing to witness; and watching her most recent work, such as midnights, portraying and embodying that growth (which many of us have had too along the years), is just something that makes me very touched.

PARALLELS!!! the colour references are just!!!!! just!!!!! i love them too!!! i wish i could rant about them as eloquently as some people in this fandom but my only braincell can only do so much. my favourite perhaps might be the blue in hoax (don't want no other shade of blue, but you) and the golden in dancing with our hands tied (deep blue, but you painted me golden). picture me screaming crying etc just thinking about it (i am very normal about it). also i just remembered a line from troye sivan's blue (i want you, i'll colour me blue) that is making me lose my mind sjdhbhdbdfh.

Fire Marshal Office personnel responded to the scene. At about 6:55 p.m., the State Fire Marshal office reported that the ordnance had been removed and would be transported to another location for detonation.The evacuation order was lifted and residents were notified that they could return to their homes. Authorities evacuated a Dubuque neighborhood this afternoon after a resident discovered what appears to be unexploded ordnance.

The Dubuque Fire Department was dispatched at 3:23 p.m. today to a residence on Sarah Street after a resident digging in the backyard unearthed “what is believed to be an unexploded (World War II)-era mortar round/ordnance,” according to a press release.The release states that all 25 properties in the neighborhood have been evacuated as a precaution and Sarah Street is blocked to all traffic. Maryville Street also is blocked from Kaufmann Avenue to Kane Street.State Fire Marshal office personnel are on the scene, and a specialist will determine if the ordnance is dangerous, the release states.Authorities urge residents to avoid the area while first responders assess the situation.
