I just read your response about how the Erin's didn't realise the colonialism themes of DOTC and now I'm wondering if it's because they're British - a big fucking colonialist country
I am also British and I have seen first hand how watered down the empire's negative consequences are in schools. I still remember being told, "the only ones that weren't having a great time were the slaves." when in reality no-one but the British was having a good time
It's unthinkable that the fact they are White British Authors of a Certain Age didn't contribute to it. Like... that's just how culture works, even if it somehow wasn't at all related to their formal education. It influences how you think.
(Also as an aside, even most of The British didn't like the whole empire thing. 3/4ths of Britain isn't England. 2024 is still young, come on guys, be hilarious)
I can't ENTIRELY pin this one on you guys though, the writers are English but their biggest audience is American. And the Americans also predictably failed to catch the themes. ALSO a big colonialist country.
(I happened to get a really good education though, especially for a public school. I don't know if My Fellow Americans even learned about the Whiskey Rebellion or the Banana Wars)
It's also hard to explain it, but the Erins also have a very British way of writing fat people. There's overlap between them, but Brit and American fatphobia has two 'trends.'
American fatphobia tends to frame weight as being funny, pathetic, and a sign of a lack of discipline. English fatphobia tends use it to make a villainous or annoying character appear even more vile, greedy, and unhygienic. American media has also had a stronger trend of body positivity lately, whereas I'm having a hard time even thinking of overweight English characters who are not mocked for their size.
These are just the two things I've noticed though. I'm sure there's more noteworthy trends about WC that's influenced by its authors coming from where they do.

"what kind of law did astarion pass to piss off the gur so much 😂"
aside from the fact magisters don't pass laws, the implication that cazador was just kind of casually waiting around for his moment bc knew astarion was Such a dickhead that someone was going to beat his ass to death eventually is extremely funny

unseen academicals was my first practical introduction to crab theory/crab mentality ("if i can't have it neither can you") and it makes me so fucking crazy so crazy it's SO crazy to realize that you're the person who is limiting and hurting someone you truly love because you want to keep them safe and your status quo is the only safety you know. the fact that the book relates that back to model minority theory is also crazy. the other fact that the tip glenda uses to bake pickled onions into pies while keeping them fresh and crunchy actually works is also also crazy

"And you wouldn't believe the sums this child can do. I've started just plucking random high numbers from the air to see what she can handle - I don't even know if her answers are correct!" laughed Margaret.
Thomas grunted, "I don't see why you're putting all this effort in. The girl's of the Pure Faith. Their lot don't do with maths or science. They do marriage and child-bearing in their stuffy black outfits."
"Her mama knows what I teach," disagreed Margaret. "I think even followers of the Pure Faith know that education matters."
"Mark my words, the only use her mama has in mind for her is adding money to the family coffers."

Margaret shook her head and stood, walking across the room. "How can you speak so callously about a child?"
"I'm sorry - that was unnecessary. I'm just tired of you harping on about those girls. You'd think they were the Watcher's Gift to Earth with the way you talk about them."
"They are the Watcher's Gift to me," Margaret replied. "They've brought me company and joy - two things I haven't had from you in some time."
Tumblr media
"I'm here now, aren't I?"
"Only because your gambling debts have you barred from every card table in Tartosa," Margaret replied bitterly.
"If you increased my allowance, I wouldn't have any debts," replied Thomas angrily, leaning into Margaret and pressing her against the dresser.
Tumblr media
Margaret laughed sarcastically, pushing Thomas back. "And watch you pour more of my family money into the sea? I think not."
"Argh, why must you be such a controlling madame?"
"Why must you be such a wayward drunkard?"
The two of them stared each other down, each breathing heavily from their anger. Then, within seconds, they grabbed at each other and began to kiss passionately.

My gf was listening to "White Blank Page" by Mumford and Sons and I once again told her that song is SO much better if it's gay.
She doesn't listen to the lyrics of songs but she's extremely good at literary analysis and this time she actually looked up the lyrics and has now come to the following conclusion: "It makes no sense if it's not gay."
My (objectively best) reading is this:
The narrator was in love with a guy who strung him along, never willing to be in a committed (or public) relationship with him and maybe insisting that it's extremely heterosexual "helping a bro out" sex, except in more intimate moments. Finally out of nowhere guy is suddenly committed to a woman and when Narrator confronted him, guy spat out homophobic vitriol and claimed he's not gay like the Narrator.
(For extra flavor imagine them as closeted, straight passing Midwestern flannel wearing, love-bonfires-and-camping guys who sat next to each other at church and elbowed and annoyed each other like best friends do and were each other's go-to source of emotional support! And then to suddenly shut Narrator out for the first time ever, by abruptly marrying a woman and insisting that he's always been straight and their relationship meant nothing...)
Here are the lyrics:
Can you lie next to her And give her your heart, your heart As well as your body? And can you lie next to her And confess your love, your love As well as your folly? And can you kneel before the king And say, "I'm clean! I'm clean!" ? But tell me now, where was my fault In loving you with my whole heart? Oh, tell me now, where was my fault In loving you with my whole heart? A white blank page and a swelling rage, rage You did not think When you sent me to the brink, to the brink You desired my attention But denied my affections, my affections So tell me now, where was my fault In loving you with my whole heart? Oh, tell me now, where was my fault In loving you with my whole heart? Lead me to the truth and I Will follow you with my whole life Oh, lead me to the truth and I Will follow you with my whole life
Why call multiple people "you" in a totally unclear way? Why would you claim that your female ex's new man can't love her AT ALL (not just as much as you did, AT ALL)? And invoking the judgment of God is so fucking tedious if you're just shaming your female ex for moving on or even cheating/getting with your friend. Also you look like a creepy asshole if you think a girl broke up with you for "loving her too much".
This song is tepid, badly written, and makes the narrator look like an asshole if it's NOT gay.
The gay reading is the ONLY compelling one.
