“Stole Watch In Kirk Saving Up For ‘Cycle,” Toronto Star. April 11, 1932. Page 2. ---- Father on Relief Berated for Countenancing Ambition of Sons --- Already on probation and 3 times previously before the court, Kenneth Mitchell, a youth of 17, was sent to jail in police court this morning for 30 days for stealing a watch. The youth pleaded guilty and the police explained that the watch, the property of Harry G. Blea, had been taken by accused from the locker-room in Westminster church.
‘Has anyone anything to say for this boy?’ inquired the bench.
The lad’s father said his boy was not vicious in his opinion. He was irresponsible. He and his elder brother were collecting money to buy a motor-cycle. They needed money.
‘I believe you are on city relief, are you not,’ inquired the crown of the father. ‘Yes, sir.’
‘And yet you countenance the idea of these two youths, dependent on you, considering buying a motorcycle?’
‘Get rid of that motor-cycle idea,’ ordered the bench, as he sentence the accused, ‘the next time you appear here you will go to the reformatory.’
‘Vagrant’ Has $17 Thirty-seven inebriates were disposed of by Magistrate Tinker in preliminary court to-day as follows: Three months, James Thompson and James Tennant; $50 or one month, Thomas Watson, Joe Austin and Patrick Flynn; $20 or 30 days, William Smith; $10 and costs or 30 days, George Zimmerman, and $10 or 10 days, Thomas Aspell, John Clarke, John Martin, and Andrew Vallier. The remainder of the list were remanded for sentence.
‘Vagrant’ Despite $17  ‘I am no vagrant,’ said Albert ‘Pat’ McGill, flourishing a roll of $17.
‘You are charged with begging, this is the point,’ retorted Magistrate Tinker.
‘He should have appeared before Magistrate Jones, but he went to Hamilton instead and got drunk and was afraid to come to court,’ explained Inspector Guthrie.
‘Why on earth didn’t he stay there?’ queried the bench.
Pat was allowed to go on his undertaking to get out of town again. Harry Day was remanded for a week on his own bail in the sum of $50. The charge was vagrancy.
Having no money, work or home, Robert Sevanson, a bright-looking youth, gratefully accepted an offer of help from the Salvation Army. They will return him to Vancouver.
Found in close proximity to a stolen automobile that was discovered in a lane, and held for some days in custody on a vagrancy charge while inquiries were being made, James Callingham was allowed to go today.
‘And remember, my lad, no more of this all night stuff,’ warned the bench.
Pleading guilty to shop-breaking, Thomas Morgan was remanded in custody for a week for investigation, prior to sentence.
‘He is just a petty thief; I think the best he has achieved is a series of sentences of 10 days,’ said Crown Attorney Malone of James Cosgrave, who pleaded guilty to snatching some men’s socks, a lady’s compact and purse, and other articles of minor value, out of a baby carriage. The lady’s husband was responsible for his capture.
‘This time it will be three plus six months,’ decided the court.
A false pretenses charge preferred against Andrew Reid was allowed withdrawn. The money has been returned.
Gordon O’Neill and Stephen Kelly, charged with aggravated assault, were remanded till May 4 on $100 bail.
The accused are alleged to have beaten a gateman a week ago in an effort to ‘crash’ in on a hockey game.
Charged with theft, Wesley A. Drew was remanded until April 14 on his own bail. Similarly charged, Joseph W. Croney was remanded till April 18 on bail of $500 and William Cable until April 19, on bail of $400. A ticket scalping charged preferred against James Cruise was enlarged till April 13.
Unable to plead verbally because his jaw was broken and wired together, William Patterson, convicted of fraud in connection with a hotel bill, was sent to jail for 30 days and ordered deported. The magistrate ordered accused admitted to the jail hospital.
Charged with housebreaking in the home of Rev. Canon Sawers, John H. Wood and John Beckett were remanded until April 19.
The two men are said to have been caught in the basement of Canon Sawyer’s home last night, after they had stolen the Sunday morning collection of St. Matthew’s Anglican church. The alarm was given by a neighbor. The two men are said to have put up a strong fight against the constables. The rector was at evening service at the time.
‘He obviously needs to be under supervision in some mental institution,’ remarked the crown when Albert Ellis, a red-headed youth stood up to answer a theft charge. He was sent to the psychiatric hospital for a week for examination.
Because he had a few bottles of beer in his automobile when not on his way home, William C. Hutcheson pleaded guilty to a B.L.C.A. charge and was fined the minimum $10 and costs or 30 days.
Chance to Make Good ‘I am going to give you a chance to make good. You will both be placed on probation for a year,’ decided Judge Coatsworth when Thomas Lazerofff and Walter Woodinsky appeared for disposition after pleading guilty to stealing some cigarettes from a pool room.
Thomas O’Connor rested his defence in a shopbreaking charge, preferred against his client Fred Hinchcliffe, on the grounds that the information was not properly laid.
Counsel contended that the information stated that his client had entered a Wellesley St. butcher’s shop with intent to commit an indictable offence, without specifying what the offence was.
The bench remanded the case for a week for judgement.

My Hamefura Original Characters Part 2
More of my original characters for Hamefura. Like before, all of these characters are free to use as long as I’m credited. Again, thanks to @dulcito-on-ao3 and @logo-comics for inspiring me to do this.
Part 1 - Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8
Marquis Norman Lambert - the father of Phoebe Lambert, an intelligent man who is proud of his position and achievements and is a bit arrogant. Nevertheless, he is loyal to the king and has a cordial relationship with Prime Minister Dan Ascart. He resembles his daughter a lot with dark brown hair and glasses. He is the Minister of Finance and a decently powerful earth mage.
Marquis Gaston Russell - is Vincent Russell's father, and a narcissistic, chauvinistic, and egotistical man who seeks to increase his power and prestige. He has the same misogynistic thinking as his son and disapproves of women participating in "men stuff" - especially if those women are more skilled than the men. He was Radea Ascarts's original fiancé and hates Dan Ascart for 'stealing' her from him. He has red hair in a ponytail and yellow eyes and resembles his son a lot, but burlier. He is a powerful fire mage and a skilled hunter who loves to brag about the beasts that he has killed. His family is subordinates of the Burke Family, and he is an occasional ally of Marquis Jacques Alarie.
Edward Grant - the oldest son of a count and a member of the Duelist Club. He is arrogant and overconfident in his skills and likes to brag about his skills to anyone who wants to listen - and to do that, DO NOT want to hear. He has a fragile ego and does not react well to losing to someone he underestimated. Despite this, he is loyal to those he considers his friends and protective of his family. He develops a grudge against Katarina after the Duke's daughter soundly defeats him in a sword duel. He is the same age as Katarina; he has black hair and green eyes and has strong water magic. He is friends with Isaac Alarie and Richard Vallier.
Richard Vallier - the youngest son of a baron. He is intelligent and observant, often acting as the voice of reason amongst his friends - especially Edward. He is somewhat arrogant regarding his intelligence and has a rivalry with Phoebe Lambert over which of them is more brilliant. Like Phoebe, he dislikes that Katarina Claes is allowed to be in the Student Council Room despite her low grades but doesn't directly confront the Duke's daughter. He is the same age as Ginger Tucker and Fray Randall; he has long sandy hair in a ponytail and pale green eyes behind glasses. He has strong wind magic.
Milton Fowler - a high-ranking Ministry official. He is one of the few people aware of the existence of Dark Magic and knows that Katarina Claes possesses a Familiar of Darkness. He is a corrupt and greedy individual who will gladly take bribes and support secret, illegal experiments. He hates Larna Smith for some reason and wishes to bring her down. He has dark hair and cold, yellow eyes behind rectangular glasses. He is the illegitimate son of a noble and a powerful wind mage.
James Coleman - is Viscount Coleman's second son, Thomas's younger brother, and Keith's half-brother. He is an arrogant and conceited person, but he is responsible and treats his servants well, unlike his older brother. He is closest to his mother and doesn't have a high opinion of his father due to the latter's playboy behavior. He loathes and fears Keith due to his origins and powerful magic but acknowledges that Keith now has a higher status as the Claes' heir.
The next group are actually unnamed minor characters whom I gave names and backgrounds:
The girls who bullied Maria because of her high grades:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elaine Quinn (Dark Dress) - the daughter of a Viscount family. She is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl but has an inferiority complex regarding her magic, so she tries pushing around those she deems inferior. She can be impulsive when upset and not think about the possible consequences of her actions, like trying to use magic against another student. She hates Maria because she appears to get privileges despite being a commoner and "inferior." Her Fire Magic is of average strength.
Daniela Rosales (Red Dress) - is the daughter of a Baron family and is related to the Flores Family. She has an inferiority complex regarding her family's low status, so she bullies and mocks others to feel superior. She is cowardly when confronted by someone of higher rank, and she can be pressured to act as someone's lackey. She is jealous of Maria because she has powerful friends despite being a commoner. Her Fire Magic is decently powerful.
Claire Chopin (Blue Dress) - the daughter of a Viscount family. She acts like a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl, but, in reality, she has an inferiority complex related to her weak magic. She is rather intelligent and has high grades though not enough to be in the top twenty. Although she backs off if a person of higher status confronts her, she is not a coward and will not be pressured into becoming someone's lackey. She is jealous of Maria for having rare and powerful magic. She has water magic.
Beatrice Fernsby (Green Dress) - the daughter of a Baron family. She has an inferiority complex related to her low academic rankings despite her decently strong magic, so she acts superior and bullies others to feel better about herself. She is jealous of Maria because of her high grades. She has earth magic.
Noelia Flores’ lackeys from Verge of Doom:
Tumblr media
Evelyn Edwards (bob hairstyle) - the daughter of a count; is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl. She is a childhood "friend" (lackey) and admirer of Noelia Flores and is always willing to do what Noelia says - though this is both because of admiration/respect and fear of the other woman. She has decently powerful Wind Magic.
Bianca Rossi (twin tails) - the daughter of a count; is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl. She is a childhood "friend" (lackey) and admirer of Noelia Flores and is always willing to do what Noelia says - though this is both because of admiration/respect and fear of the other woman.  She is Malva Rossi's younger twin sister, and their relationship is decent though they are not too close. She has decently powerful Water Magic.
And finally, Yandere Girl (also from Verge of Doom):
Tumblr media
Lady Lisette Hyacinthe (aka Yandere Girl) - is the daughter of a Viscount family. She tends to fantasize, especially regarding romance, and becomes a bit crazy if things do not go as she imagined them. When she's not obsessing about her fantasies, she is actually a nice and friendly person who likes to garden and collect pretty things. She has weak earth magic.

Hold On Tight-Tommy Shelby x Sister!Reader

Requested by anonymous: 'Hiya love, could yo do an imagine where the reader is a Shelby sister and is closest to Tommy, like best friends and they go do some business together one day and she dies? But like grace’s death where she’s in his arms and he’s obviously really sad but she’s trying to be positive about it. ❤️'
Characters: Thomas Shelby X Reader (siblings), Arthur Shelby x Reader (siblings), John Shelby x Reader (siblings)
Meanings: (Y/N)=Your name
Warnings: Swearing, guns, violence, injuries/wounds, death
(A/N: This is before John's or Grace's deaths)
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Morning boys." I greeted as my three older brothers walked in.
"Alright (Y/N)." Arthur nodded, hugging me briefly before making his way to the kitchen.
John copied his actions, catching up with him as Tommy entered, hugging me that bit longer.
"You sure you want me coming with you today?" I asked him as we pulled apart.
"I'm sure. You're the one that's been researching this guy for us, you're the best person to come along."
"Flattery doesn't get you anywhere Tommy. It's not like I'm going to object. Are you wanting to leave now?"
"Not just yet. We need to go over the plan again."
"Again? Tommy-"
He raised his hand, pointing at me."We always go over the plan-"
"Three times." we said in unison.
"Right." he nodded and went to the kitchen, me shaking my head behind him.
John and Arthur had already made themselves comfortable at the table, helping themselves to the freshly boiled teapot. As I walked past John, I smacked his legs that were resting on top of my table. He flinched, almost falling off his chair as he protested, rubbing where I hit him.
"Do you forget manners everytime you step into a civilised house?" I scolded playfully.
"Civilised house? Since when have you or anyone in the family been civilised?" he chuckled.
"Well, just don't put your grubby shoes on my clean table. My house, my rules."
"Alright mum."
I only rolled my eyes at him. John and I were only a year apart, I remember all the times we bickered as children, though there was definitely a love hate relationship. I always tried to act my age unless he was around, then it all went out the window. The boys were much older than us, and didn't always want to play; seeing as we were the closest in age, we compromised on our games, but I grew up with three brothers, they were bound to be tough. It built character (as they say), though it was only after the war that I became closer to Tommy.
Arthur had always been the best big brother, always looking after and defending me. As did John and Tommy, though Arthur could sometimes have a more authoritive look about him, more intimidating. I had always looked up to him. But Tommy and I never talked much, or played games with each other. He didn't even hug me much either. I saw my three brothers be sent off to war, and like all the men that left, they came back different. And Tommy coped with it in an extremely unhealthy way.
All those nights he had nightmares, he didn't have to be screaming in his sleep or crying, I just felt that something was wrong. A weird sense of dread would fill me before going to sleep, and it would wake me up, forcing me to go check on Tommy. He would rarely talk about it, but I stayed strong beside him, refusing to leave until he fell asleep again. Of course there were the drugs, and although I tried desperately to make him stop, he never did. However, I was there on the other side. It sort of happened naturally, our relationship. Maybe it came with age, maybe he acknowledged my help. Tommy was closest to me in my opinion, and I supported him with a majority of what he did (unless he used the family, that's where I crossed the line).
"I still don't know how I feel about this Tom." Arthur said.
"If you're talking about me, which you do every time we do something like this, then you need to get over it." I gently replied as I sat beside Tommy.
"You're my little sister, (Y/N), you shouldn't be here."
He wasn't being mean. He was just concerned. I smiled at him.
"Arthur, I've been through this a million times, with and without you guys. I'll be fine, we all will."
"Just get that feeling in me stomach-"
"That's enough Arthur." Tommy interrupted, lighting up a cigarrette. We waited for him to take a drag, exhaling the smoke before he spoke."We go through the backstreets, to their storage house for their booze. That's where we said we would meet. He has his men, we have ours. Now this is strictly business, no fucking threats, no fucking fighting, no fucking shooting. Understood?"
"I still think it's too dangerous for (Y/N) to come along." Arthur added.
"She's the one that's been getting the information for us. For some reason her tactics have worked better than ours."
"Oi!" I protested.
"That wasn't meant to offend."
"I've helped plenty of times before. Believe me Arthur, I've been behind the scenes of a lot of your operations."
"You've been around Tom too long, starting to speak like him too." Arthur smirked as he sipped his tea.
I ignored him."How many of your men will be there? Our dealer usually has ten with him at all times. He's agreed to not have anymore."
"Then we'll bring fifteen, ten with us and five to hide."
"You don't trust him."
"Any man who takes ten men as protection at all times is paranoid, meaning he'll also have some hidden away."
"So much for no shoot outs." John mumbled.
"Better safe than sorry." I snapped.
"Alright." Tommy warned."We're there to make a deal, and we'll leave with one."
We climbed into Tommy's car, silent as he drove to the meeting place. As we parked up our men were already waiting, watching as us Shelby's got out and walked ahead of them.
"So you listened to me then?" I quietly said to Tommy.
"What?"
"Finn's not here, that means you listened to me."
"Yes, I suppose you were right." he smirked.
"Good, he's still too young for all this."
"Now you sound like Polly."
I always felt nervous about these things. It never got any easier for me. Of course I didn't let it show on my face, and it always shocked these men to see a woman turn up. A slight advantage sometimes, they couldn't comprehend that a woman actually had a brain.
"How's Grace?"
"You want to talk about Grace, right now?"
"Yes, why not?"
He scoffed a laugh."Nothing stops you from getting into my private life."
"It's been a while since someone has been interested in you. And you're interested in her."
"I have never said that."
"There's no need to. It's obvious."
"No it's not."
"Yes it is."
"(Y/N), we sound like children."
I laughed it off, sticking my hands in my coat pockets as the warehouse came into sight. There were two men guarding the doors, holding their guns. We didn't falter, approaching them with confidence. I thought they would search us, but instead, one of them disappeared inside, returning a few moments later, and nodding to the other guy.
"You can go in." he said, opening the door wider.
They stayed put as we all entered, following us from behind and closing the door. As expected, our dealsman was stood there with his ten men. I knew our lot were already trying to seek out anyone hidden away, they had been warned.
"Mr Vallier." Tommy started.
"Mr Shelby." He replied."Not like you to have this many men about for a business proposition."
"And you know how many men I have?"
Vallier ignored that question."Ah, I assumed your sister would come along. I've heard some remarkable things about her."
"The sister is present, you may address her." I interrupted.
"My apologies Miss Shelby. I've heard you commit acts that no other lady has ever done before. I must say, I am impressed."
"Thank you. You flatter me Mr Vallier."
He chuckled."So, Mr Shelby, shall we begin?"
It really was a simple trading agreement. Vallier was making some of the best gin in the country, though it hadn't become famous yet. He was a powerful man, built himself up from the ground; he ran his own gang, like us, knew that alcohol was a good selling point. Tommy saw an opportunity. Get him on our side, and we have another piece of territory as well as more money flowing in. It all seemed fairly simple, Vallier was just paranoid as we expected. This was the easiest meeting we had been to, and it made me nervous. However, that feeling started to drain away as we finished. There was more of a sense of feeling left out as I didn't get to say much.
Tommy and Vallier shook hands once we were outside the warehouse, both looking somewhat smug.
"Garrison?" John leaned over to me.
"Garrison." I nodded, smiling as he swung his arm over my shoulder.
Our lot began walking away, another deal was done. It was all calm and relieved until one of Vallier's boys started shouting, blocking our path.
"YOU KILLED MY BROTHER! HE NEVER DID ANYTHING BAD IN HIS LIFE!" He screamed, aiming his gun at Tommy.
"Don't shoot!" Tommy instructed.
John held me behind him."What the fuck is he planning now?"
"Sam, get inside!" Vallier yelled.
"I'm sorry sir, but these devil's had no right killing my brother, he wasn't even involved in any business!" the boy's aim never faltered.
Before anyone could figure out what to do, someone shot their gun, but it wasn't from the boy. We all ducked, running for cover as more bullets were fired. It was an ambush, there were hidden shooters, but they weren't working for Vallier. This boy wanted revenge. I knew this was all too good to be true.
John had pulled me behind a stack of crates, but the bullets were splintering the wood. We took turns peaking out and shooting, but it was impossible to see who we were shooting at.
"GET HER OUT OF HERE!" Tommy instructed John, but we were ultimately stuck.
"If you slip past the warehouse, you can squeeze through a narrow passage, that will get you out." Vallier rushed."Dont worry, these lads will run out of ammunition soon enough!"
John and I glanced at each other, and before I knew it, he was dragging me into the open space, headed where Vallier had mentioned. The warehouse was right night to a brick wall, with a gap just big enough for me to squeeze through. John on the other hand wouldn't even be able to get a foot in.
"John!"
"You keep going (Y/N), keep hidden until you don't hear no shooting no more, yeah?"
I nodded, groaning as I pulled myself through the gap. I had to walk sideways in order to keep moving, the bricks scraping against my skin. It was starting to get claustrophobic, and I was glad to have reached the end of it. Back in the normal streets, I seemed to be in the alleyway between people's back gardens. Slowly opening a back gate, I looked around it, praying there was someplace to hide. There was a shed, but I had a risk of being seen if the owners came along. But I was a Shelby, they should know who I am and not question it if I they did find me. And I had my gun, I was safe. Luckily the door was unlocked, and I hid inside, ducking so i wasn't seen through the window.
The relentless sound of bullets richoted through the air, echoing to me. I hated not being in the fight, but there was no time to argue in a battlefield. My brother's knew what was best for me most of the time... most of the time.
It sounded like there were less bullets flying about. One last shot rang out, I waited a few minutes for anymore sounds. When nothing came, I made my way back to the alley. I still had my guard up, not that my brother's would be dead, because we were the fucking Peaky Blinders, and this wasn't our final fight.
"In the bleak midwinter..." I muttered under my breath, slowly walking.
I wanted to call out to my brother's, though that was a stupid idea, and I kept silent. The sound of a gun clicking knocked my instincts into gear, and I aimed my gun towards the sound.
"What the fuck do your think you're doing?" I snapped. It was the boy that started this all.
"You fuckers killed my brother!"
"So you think that makes it OK to kill all of us?"
"I'll shoot you!"
Before he could do so, I shot him first, hitting him square in the chest. He froze, hands dropping to his sides, gun falling to the floor before his knees buckledonto the cobbles, and his body collapsed. I wasted no time running past him, checking the coast was clear before I rounded the corner.
"(Y/N)!"
Tommy was up ahead, already running towards me. I let out a breath of relief, also running to him. For fucks sake, why couldn't things go smoothly for once? It couldn't just be a done deal. Someone was always out to kill us.
My fingers outstretched towards Tommy's hand, and I almost grabbed them when an excruciating pain rippled through my back, and the another pang, and another. Everything went silent, my eyes widened in shock and the breath was all but gone from my body. The boy had shot me, somehow he wasn't dead and had shot me.
Tommy caught me before I hit the ground, and I wanted to desperately hold onto him, but I couldn't control my limbs.
"Somebody get the fucking car!" he yelled, the sound suddenly flooding back.
"T-Tommy," I shakily said, looking up at him,"h-h-hold me, please, I w-want t-to feel you."
His arms gradually gripped onto me tighter, and I showed no pain, even though it made me feel worse. It was rare to see Tommy Shelby cry, and it felt like an honour to watch them roll down and out of his crystal blue eyes.
I swallowed the taste of blood rising in my throat."Tommy, l-listen. I-I w-want you to marry that....that G-Grace."
"What? (Y/N) don't worry-"
"She challenges you, I-I l-like her. A-and h-have a nice wed... wedding."
"I will."
"C-an I have a portrait? You always s-said I-I could."
He nodded."You'll sit for that portrait yourself. You're not going anywhere."
"(Y/N), Tommy!" I could faintly hear John and Arthur.
I smiled. My older brothers were here, they were going to look after me like they always did.
"John, Arthur."
"We're here (Y/N), alright?" John cried, grabbing one of my hands.
"Fucking hell." Arthur seethed.
"I-I love you all. T-tell Finn and P-Polly...that...I love them too."
"You can't go (Y/N), you just can't." Tommy whispered.
"You'll live on Tommy. Be happy, please, f-for me."
I lavished the feeling of comfort as I felt my skin turn colder, it was harder to breathe, harder to stay awake. The pain I was in didn't matter, I had my three heroes around me, my three brothers. They say us Shelby's couldn't be killed, and I had always lived by that. However, someone had plans for me to die today, and if it meant something bigger and better for my family then so be it. I held onto my smile as much as possible, not wanting my boys to see how I was hurting. As life slowed down around me, I looked up one last time into Tommy's eyes, his beautiful blue eyes that I was envious of; they were a comfort, a piece of my brother I would keep with me forever, even if they were full of tears.

Would you mind telling us a few little-known facts about Louis XIV? I'm always interested in learning the side of history that is rarely talked about.
Heres one dozen facts for you:
• His favourite colour was blue. It was also Louise de la Valliere’s favourite colour too. One thing they had in common.
• After supper, he pocketed some pastries and biscuits to feed to his dogs.
• When he was younger, he would groom his moustache almost every day, curling and slicking it.
• He would visit his mistresses’ rooms if he was in the mood for a good time, not them coming to him.
• His favourite book was The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. Some say this is where he could’ve gotten inspiration for his ruling method from.
• He was fond of Thomas Hobbes’ political philosophies. He hired a translator Samuel de Sorbière to translate Hobbes’ books and other writings from English to French.
• He had a pessimistic view on human nature.
• He had an interest in Chinese culture, therefore, an art form called Chinoiserie first appeared during his reign. Chinoiserie is the European interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions, using a lot of porcelain and Chinese-influenced designs.
• He thought that the fashion in England was quite tasteless, writing in a letter that the English nobles dressed like his footmen.
• When Bernini came to Paris where he sculpted Louis’ bust, Louis would only allow a certain number of sitting sessions as he was a busy man who had things to do. He sat in front of Bernini for a total of thirteen times for one hour each session.
• And speaking about Bernini, Bernini himself commented on Louis’ looks saying, “He has half the mouth in one way, and the other in the other, a different eye too and even different cheeks.” He made some touches to the bust by enlarging the king’s eyes, elongating his small forehead, making his face more oblong, and fixing the asymmetries that were mentioned.
• John Wilmot made a poem on Charles II of England saying that his “p***k was of length”. Louis’ short-term mistress Catherine Charlotte de Gramont read it and made a comment on her royal lover saying that although his power was great, his “sceptre” was not so, as it was rather petit.

Tranh chấp kết quả bầu cử Mỹ - Ác mộng của Phố Wall
Tumblr media

BRUNO MARS FT. CARDI B - FINESSE (REMIX) [6.77] This one's for you, James! (Spoiler: the next two are also for you)
Katie Gill: I am 100% here for the Bruno Mars Tour Through The Decades. 1970s retrofunk, 1980s Kool & the Gang R&B, and now 1990s Bell Biv Devoe New Jack Swing -- complete with an amazing homage video (they kept the frame size, y'all!). As always, Mars gives us a pitch-perfect homage that's draws enough from the original style for a beautiful throwback but adds in fun, fresh takes. The song lyrically doesn't bring anything new: it's just 'damn we look good.' But more and more, it seems you don't really listen to a Bruno Mars song for the lyrics; you listen for whatever throwback sound he's reworking today and you watch to see Mars be a legitimate showman, giving it his all with his charisma and borderline impeccable dance moves. Cardi B is also in top form: she matches Mars's infectious fun and swaggering confidence level for level. Considering what a boring blight 2017 top 40 pop music seemed at times, what a refreshing way to start off the new year. [9]
Edward Okulicz: I hear those drums and this is instantly Cardy! Cardi! Cardé! Very affectionate, very accurate, and very welcome. I wouldn't have said no to more Cardi, but I still enjoy the song when she's not around. [8]
Maxwell Cavaseno: During the holiday visit, me and my father caught up and I showed him a bunch of current generation female rappers that he didn't know of: Molly Brazy, Bali Baby, Asian Doll, Queen Key, just to name a few. Of course he knows about Cardi so we both brought her up and he jokingly called her "The New Real Roxanne." Ironically here she is on this Bruno remix of early-'90s New Jack Swing, the kind of stuff Full Force would've primed up for Roxanne to guest on or even rap over herself -- and she sounds actually like she's having fun. Bruno, on the other hand, is kind of just way too stiff to really engage with. For all the obvious Bobby Brownisms he's going for, the Vegasness that runs through him keeps him from hitting the sweet spot of engagement. Still A+ effort on both parties. [6]
Julian de Valliere: In "Finesse," Cardi's your charismatic friend, Bruno's that guy from her work who you've said hello to once, and the 127 second space between her appearances is when she takes a trip to the restroom while he makes small talk and you keep glancing at your phone's lock screen. Still, everyone has a fantastic time when she's around. [7]
Anthony Easton: I wonder if Cardi B's charm is a kind of rough hewn minimalism, and I know Bruno Mars' charm is mostly a whole scale riffling through nostalgic desire. Neither of those modes read finesse to me. [4]
Alfred Soto: I get that fans get off on Bruno Mars releasing eerie simulacra of extinct R&B sounds. "Finesse" is his Teddy Riley or "Poison" Move, and it's the aural equivalent of a Meryl Streep performance. [5]
Austin Brown: The single cover says it all, really -- the queen of the new generation of hyperreal, social media-bred celebrity, mugging for the camera next to an unconvincingly stony Bruno Mars, once described by TSJ's very own Katherine St. Asaph as an "animatronic sequined suit" for Pitchfork. Cardi's verse is tacked on at the very front, after which she disappears entirely until she throws in some outro vocals. As a result, the two parts of the song (which was basically "fine" before) work great independently, but feel like a weird medley of two generations of pop sitting next to each other. Oh, and here's some added weirdness: the two generations aren't even their native ones, with Cardi mining peak hip-house while Bruno sticks with new jack swing. Come on, Diddy and Blackstreet already figured out how to make this work fluidly more than 20 years ago. [4]
Thomas Inskeep: I love the hell outta Bruno's 24K Magic album, and this song was always a highlight, as New Jack Swing as it gets -- the production/writing teams of Shampoo Press & Curl and the Stereotypes are on their shit. Adding a rap intro from the hottest woman of the moment makes it even mo' betta, though I wish they'd brought her back for a 16-bar bridge, too. Mars may be the ultimate musical chameleon, but damned if he doesn't sound the most comfortable plumbing the sounds of '80s R&B. More, please. [8]
Will Rivitz: I'm kind of ashamed it's taken me this long to fall in with Cardi B. "Bodak Yellow" and "Bartier Cardi"are both phenomenal songs, to be sure, but to me they've never sounded like the glamorously regal performances others have advertised, the rapper vibrantly excellent but not unquestionably dominant. It's taken till this, a new jack swing song which would seem well out of her wheelhouse in which she nevertheless so commandingly stomps all over the track's first thirty seconds that Bruno Mars almost feels like an afterthought, but I finally understand what her fans have been saying. [8]
Katherine St Asaph: Things I didn't expect but probably should have: A) Cardi B turning around "Bodak Yellow" with a pop-rap verse this effervescent B) on a Bruno Mars new jack swing track. Can 2018 be full of this kind of good surprise? [7]
Will Adams: The song knows which side of the bread is buttered, which is why Cardi B kicks things off with a verse that proves her versatility as a rapper. After that, the excitement wears off a bit. As I've mentioned before, merely recreating the sounds of yore as meticulously as possible doesn't always result in a modern jam. And while Bruno Mars is absolutely the best man for the job, "Finesse" rides the line of novelty and creates distance between it and me. [6]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Not much is as emblematic of Bruno Mars's modus operandi as a music video shot in 60fps with a 4:3 aspect ratio. He creates nostalgic music that's as flashy as it is alien-like, and the only way he seems comfortable overcoming the latter is by doubling down on the former. A line like "Blame it on my confidence, oh blame it on your measurements" is as garish as it comes, but his commitment to the shtick overcomes any apparent personality deficiencies. It reminds me of why a lot of K-pop is successful, and it's one of the reasons why I believe some people have been making comparisons between it and Mars's music for the past few years. Naturally, "Finesse" was produced by The Stereotypes, and this ends up being a stronger effort than Korea's recent new jack swing efforts precisely because of how effortlessly fun it sounds. It's, of course, in no small part due to Cardi B's presence--she plays her role comfortably, utilizing lines and a flow that feel like a love letter to the '90s. With "Finesse," she's already more versatile than many of her peers, and it's the best case for her staying power yet. [8]
Alex Clifton: I still hear the chorus as "trip to Inverness," but I don't even care. This is fun! Cardi B and Bruno Mars are an unexpectedly charming collaboration--Bruno brings his usual upbeat magic and Cardi lets loose a little. It's a delight to hear something that simultaneously invokes the 90s while never actually feeling dated; it's just a shot of joy. I'm ready to start off 2018 with a good party banger to cleanse myself of the past year, and this fits the bill. [8]

“Sergeant Kicked And Punched Him Youth Complains,” Toronto Star. August 6, 1931. Page 1. ---- Petition to Mayor Stewart Protests Brutality of Police - ‘Afraid of Draper’ --- SUSPENSION SOUGHT ---- William Valliere Told to Move On - Citizens Call It Outrage ---- Charging that Sergeant Reynolds of No. 8 division had kicked a youth ‘at least five times’ because he did not move fast enough when told to move on, and then ‘struck him full in the face at least three times,’ a petition signed by eight storekeepers of the Coxwell-Queen district, protesting against the sergeant’s action, and demanding his suspension, was taken to city hall to-day.
On learning Mayor Stewart was out of town, the letter was not left because, according to William Valliere, 67 Rhodes Ave., the youth on whom it was alleged the assault was committed, ‘we were afraid that General Draper would get hold of it again, and then it would have been all up.’
Questioned regarding the incident, Inspector Wm. Jonston, in charge of Pape Ave., station, said: ‘It is the first thing I heard about it. I cannot say anuting such an allegation until it is investigated and as it is a matter for the board of police commissioners, I cannot say anything.’
Patrol Sergeant Reynolds when seen by The Star, said he had no statement to make until he saw his inspector.
The letter to the mayor says:
Letter to Mayor We wish as representatives of a large deputation of Coxwell and Queen citizens to lodge a complaint against Patrol Sergeant Reynolds of No. 87 police station, Pape Ave., for assault and battery, to the person of William Valilere, residing at 67 Rhodes AVe.
Following will explain our reasons; Four young men were standing, talking in front of a store between Coxwell and Rhodes avenue on Queen St., when Sergeant Reynolds and a constable approached. The sergeant came over and asked what they were doing there.
‘Just talking, sir,’ replied one.
He then asked them one at a time where they resided. They willingly obliged by complying with his request, after which he said; ‘You fellows had better get moving and with an ‘all right sergeant,’ the group then dispersed to their destinations.
However, one fellow, William Valliers, not moving fast enough to suit the sergeant was taken completely by surprise who, according to eye witnesses, numbering from 15 to 20 persons kicked him at least five times and then struck him full in the face at least three times, the young man all the time trying to hold the sergeant’s hands so that he would not strike him again.
He released his hands and started to walk away at a fast clip but then stopped and stated words to the effect that he would report him to headquarters. By this time a crowd of citizens numbering between 150 and 200 persons had gathered and were becoming indignant at the outrageous conduct on the part of the sergeant and also were there to witness the arrest of the accused who was charged with vagrancy and others charges.
Is a man who has been unemployed for two weeks, living at home with his people who as, as anybody in the neighborhood will state respectable people, a vagrant?
We demand a complete investigation and also the suspension of the officer in question. Also we have witnesses to the effect that the same officer struck another young man one block over 20 minutes previous to the above incident. The state of affairs is certainly getting pretty bad when a police sergeant can commit assault and battery upon a respectable citizen and then expect to get away with it.
As mayor of the city of Toronto, and working in the interests of the public, we have no doubt but that you will give us a complete and satisfactory report on the above stated case.
Yours respectfully.
A. LEWIS, 1610 Queen St. E. S. BARNES, 1594 1/2 Queen St. E. A. DEPIETRO, 1590 Queen St. E. THOMAS WOODS, 1608 Queen St. E. J. HOLLIDAY, SR., 5 Rhodes Ave. ED. LE FEUBRE, 16 Rhodes Ave. B. ELYGLOVE, 3 Rhodes Ave.

Woodbury Lions Club hosting American Red Cross blood drives
Tumblr media
vimeo
Blood Drives in Cannon County for over 60 years.
It has been said that the Lions Club drives are the best in the Tennessee Valley Region Blood Services area, which includes all of Tennessee, parts of Kentucky, and Alabama.
The extra effort put forth by the Lions Club has little to do with it. The Woodbury Lions Club has a committee of members that work together to help insure that everything runs smoothly, along with community volunteers who like to help out.
Some of the volunteers have more experience working with blood drives that the actual Red Cross staff who go out daily working with blood drives within the area.
Committee chairmen’s Patsy and Carl Hirlston and Bobby Bogard with committee members Ken and Artie Jean McIntyre, Lois Larimer, Clyde Thomas, Nolan Northcutt, Robert Jennings, Charlie Brown, Clyde and Kitty Bush, Chris Brushaber, Danny Miller, Cliff Swoape, Andy Jacobs, Doug Combs, and Gina Mitchell, all work together along with community volunteers of Bessie Miller, Orval and Esther Gray, Juanita Burks, Cathey Parker, Betty Harder, Shirley Borren, Jane Jennings, Grace Young, Nile Young, Della Young, Robert Young, Kay Campbell, Carol Davenport, Bobbie Henline, Jim Henline, Betty Paschal, Ann Todd, Mary Sue Vinson, and Mary Nelle Hillis too create a professional staff that assist members of the American Red Cross staff.
The Lions Club assigns a task of greeting donors and signing them in, handing out water and assigning donors with a number.
Copies of the Cannon Courier are provided for donors to read before or after their donation.
Red Cross provides snacks and the Woodbury Lions Club has additional snacks such as: a one-of-a-kind trail mix, peanut butter and crackers, baloney and crackers, and cheese and crackers.
A staff works in the canteen area who assist the donors after they have donated by getting them a drink of juice, water, soda, or coffee and then sitting with them and talking. They also watch the donor to see if the donors face color changes or if their arm starts bleeding from where the donor had given blood.
Woodbury Club also keeps records of each donation and awards donors with pins and Certificates when completing gallon donations. Along with taking pictures of donors receiving awards and being pinned with a gallon donation pin, plus having members of the Lions Club calling and reminding donors of upcoming blood drives also adds a little bit more to why Cannon County Blood Drives are better and produces more regular donors than other areas which has a larger population.
Woodbury Lions Club host six blood drives a year, always the third Thursday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Each blood drive is noon until six pm except May’s drive, which runs from 9 am until 6 pm. May’s blood drive is a donor appreciation drive, and most of the businesses in Cannon County donate door prizes.
In the last five to six years, each donor was able to win three of four items because of the generosity of the businesses and their support of the Lions Club and wanting to reward the true everyday heroes of Cannon County, those who give of themselves to help save the lives of others. In most cases, they are saving the lives of people who they do not know.
On May 20th, 2010 the following businesses provided door prizes for the heroes of Cannon County: A Touch of Home Flower’s & Gifts, Arts Center of Cannon County, Auto Zone, Birdsong Adhesives, Boyd’s Garage, Briar Rose Flowers and Gifts, Bromley/Jennings Automotive, Cannon County Chiropractic, Cannon Market, Captain D’s, CareAll, Cell Plus, Coco Tan & Spa, Chilangoes Mexican Restaurant, Curves, Cutting Edge Hair Salon, D J’s Pizza and Steakhouse, Family Dentistry Deason & Bucher, Farm Bureau Insurance, First National Bank, Flower Occasions, Gina’s Boutique, Hardee’s, Hayes Bros Auto Care, Hibdon’s Body Shop, Higgins Car Wash, J P’s Fine Swine Bar-B-Que, Jennings Jewelers, Joe’s Place, Legendary Cuts, Lightwriters Photography, Lions Pizza Den, The Millennium Hair Salon, Moonlite Drive-In, NAPA, The Old Feed Store, One Stop Market, Parsley’s Market & Deli, Paul Reed’s Furniture, Paul’s Auto Service, Piggly Wiggly, Potter’s Ace Hardware, Quick Shop Market, Reed’s Building Supply, Regions Bank, Roger Hindman Body Shop, Scavenger Hunt Flea Market, Scavenger Hunt Trading Post, The Scoreboard, Shirt Shack, Shotgun County Pawn & Gun, Smitty Tire Shop, Stewart’s Printing, Stone Gait Tack and Feed, Subway, West End Tobacco Store, Woodbury Auto Express, Woodbury Insurance Agency, and Woodbury Lawn & Garden. Every donor and volunteer received a promotional ink pen from DTC, a pillbox from Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperation, Chap Stick from FirstBank, a value meal card from Sonic, and a 3 pound bag of stone ground corn meal from The Readyville Mill.
The Red Cross also provided promotional items and the Woodbury Lions Club provided $10 gift certificates and a grand prize of $100 gift card.
It is very hard to find another community that has so many businesses that support a civic club as much as the ones in Cannon County.
Most all the businesses give support to the Woodbury Lions Club for sponsorship of the Lions Club Horse Show, White Cane donations, and door prizes for the donor appreciation Blood Drive. Without support from the local businesses, the Woodbury Lions Club would not be able to do as much as it does within the community, state, country, and world. Local businesses are one of the leading reasons why Cannon County Blood Drives are so much better that anywhere else in the state.
Another reason and probably the number one reason the blood drives are the best anywhere is the volume of regular donors in Cannon County. In any community only a certain per cent are eligible to donate and of that per cent only about 3 to 5 percent actually donates, but the donors in Cannon County has a much higher percent.
This is not due to the Lions Club and its part, nor the businesses and its part, but it is the individual donor and the way of life in Cannon County, the way most have been raised to want to help others in need in any way they can.
The mentality of the average person in Cannon County is to serve in any way they can. This mentality is one of the reasons Woodbury Lions Club is one of the largest clubs in the state.
It is why the businesses give as much as they do, and why so many volunteers do jobs within the county for little or no pay. The parents, schools and churches within the community teach the children from an early age of the importance of giving back to the community in which they live and the lesson that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
This is why Cannon County has had over 360 donors in the past 2-½ years. Woodbury Lions Club and the American Red Cross both use fiscal years that begin on 1 July and end 30 June.
The following is a list of local heroes who gave during the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Those donating Double Red Blood Cells count as two donations, the max number of times any one can give in a fiscal year in whole blood or double red cells is 6. The number that follows a persons name is the amount of pints given as of 30 June 2010.

The Woodbury Lions Club has received several awards of appreciation from the American Red Cross for their support of the Community Blood Program, and there is a lot of speculation as to why a small community does so well on the blood drives.
A lot of the credit is given to the Lions Club for putting out an extra effort.
Some credit is given for having good media coverage with the Cannon Courier, the Cannon Wire, and WBRY radio. Some credit is given for the support given by the businesses in Cannon County.
Any community can have a civic organization that puts forth the extra effort, and have good media and local businesses supporting them, but they don’t have the attitude and dedication of serving others that is instilled into Cannon Countians from birth until death.
The Woodbury Lions Club expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the media, businesses, and donors for exceeding the yearly goals set forth by the Red Cross based on past history.
It is so great to live among so many heroes. Likes: 7 Viewed:

Titolo originale: The Rake and the Reformer or The rake
Autore: Mary Jo Putney
Editore: I Romanzi Mondadori

As economy tries to recover, Trump's latest moves won't help
President Donald Trump's latest economic policies are the opposite of the emergency aid that Corporate America and Wall Street are clamoring for.
Trump may be calculating that tougher stances on immigration and trade could score him points in November. But they could backfire by making it harder for the economy to recover from this historic recession.
Trump is suddenly ramping up trade fights with two of the nation's biggest trading partners -- threatening to slap tariffs on goods like chocolate and butter from Europe, and reportedly pushing to reimpose tariffs on aluminum imports from Canada. Meanwhile, Trump this week also extended immigration restrictions, which could make it harder for businesses to find the skilled foreign workers they rely on.
All of this is happening during a drumbeat of bad coronavirus news, as infections surge in several areas.
Stocks tumbled Wednesday on concerns about the European tariff threat and the pandemic.
"This is exactly the wrong move at the wrong time. We're inching toward the same mistakes we made during the Great Depression," said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM International.
Economists agree the Great Depression was worsened by tariff policies -- namely, the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930, which imposed tariffs on all countries that shipped products to America. Trading partners promptly retaliated by slapping tariffs on US goods.
"For many of us, Smoot-Hawley was a joke in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.' This is not a joke. This is very serious," Brusuelas said. "It would be a significant policy error that would put at risk the nascent recovery."
Trump's tariff threats are part of a US-European battle over government subsidies to aircraft makers. The World Trade Organization ruled in 2018 that the European Union helped Airbus with unfair subsidies, clearing the path for new tariffs from the United States. The Trump administration signaled this week it plans to retaliate by slapping tariffs on $3.1 billion of goods from Europe, including olives, chocolate, gin and yogurt.
But these tariffs would only add to the vast uncertainty in the world economy right now. The International Monetary Fund on Wednesday downgraded its global growth forecast, warning of a contraction of nearly 5% in 2020.
"This is not the time to engage in a trade war and [we] simply cannot believe that the WTO can't come up with a better solution," Win Thin, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman, wrote in a note to clients Wednesday.
'Like a bad horror movie' The Trump administration is also pushing Canada to impose quotas to slow aluminum exports -- or else it will snap back a 10% tariff on the metal, Politico reported.
"Bringing back these tariffs would be like a bad horror movie," Neil Herrington, senior vice president for the Americas at the US Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Although tariffs could help aluminum makers, they would add to the pain for the already-struggling auto industry.
"If anything, it's more likely to hurt American businesses than help them," said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC. "It's going to raise costs for producers and consumers."
The US-China trade war has already showed protectionism can depress business spending, dampen confidence and scramble supply chains. That's not to mention the blow it deals to the S&P 500, as companies like Nike and Apple generate a big chunk of their sales from overseas.
While US tariffs on Canada would have a relatively small impact on the economy, "certainly that's not what you want to be doing when you're trying to climb out of a steep recession," Faucher said.
'Shortsighted' immigration policies Likewise, it's an odd time to crack down on immigration. Yet the Trump administration introduced new restrictions on visas that allow immigrants to temporarily work in the United States.
Trump signed an immigration proclamation in April that targeted people outside the United States trying to legally migrate to the country. That order was set to lapse -- but it will now be extended until the end of 2020 and expanded to include some guest worker visas.
The proclamation cited a desire to "protect unemployed Americans from the threat of competition for scarce jobs from new lawful permanent residents."
But economists warned restricting immigration is another policy error, especially during a pandemic.
"We're in the midst of a medical crisis. The last thing we want to do is discourage skilled workers from coming to the United States and helping us solve the problems we have," Faucher said.
Even before the pandemic, the US economy was growing too slowly in part because of an aging population. Underlying labor force growth is as weak as it has been since the end of World War II, according to Faucher. That in turn makes it harder to pay for the retirement of Baby Boomers.
"I'm concerned this is shortsighted," Faucher said.
Thomas Donohue, CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce, slammed the policy as a "severe and sweeping attempt to restrict legal immigration."
"Putting up a 'not welcome' sign for engineers, IT experts, doctors, nurses and other workers won't help our country, it will hold us back," Donohue said in comments that echoed criticism from the Business Roundtable.
Return of populism -- just in time for November Taken together, the immigration and trade policies threaten to offset some of the enormous positives from the unprecedented stimulus unleashed by Congress and the White House.
Economists have largely applauded the emergency aid, which included stimulus checks to households and forgivable loans to small businesses.
"I give the administration high marks on the first rounds of aid," RSM's Brusuelas said. "But the threat of sparking a transatlantic trade war is not in the spirit of what they've done since the beginning of the pandemic."
That's why analysts say the moves are more about politics, than economics.
The latest polls show Trump badly trailing Joe Biden nationally and behind in must-win Rust Belt states.
"These two issues -- immigration and tariffs -- are crucial for Trump's reelection," Greg Valliere, chief US policy strategist at AGF Investments, wrote in a note to clients Wednesday. "He needs to show testosterone on both fronts...Trump's populist base demands jobs -- and protectionism."
But the risk is that by bowing to his base, Trump hinders the recovery that is required to win reelection.
