#This is not Luz hate! I love Luz! This is just pointing out her major flaw that everyone seems to ignore

i just want Amity and Willow and Gus to get fed up with Luz for once.
Luz, Amity’s GIRLFRIEND, didn’t tell her about how she accidentally helped Belos and… Amity just forgives her on the spot???
Despite the fact that she had months to tell her..?
A rant about Luz’s dishonesty to everyone, specially Amity, below.
Same here. Throughout the show, Luz kept secrets and hid away from her friends even though they tried to help her. I never got why they could put up with her. Luz has a habit of getting so easily forgiven every time she does something wrong with barely any consequences. Her girlfriend has continuously assured her that she will still care about and love her unconditionally because she wants to be helpful but Luz doesn’t accept it. Luz has lied to Amity over and over, time after time, yet still gets forgiven in the end.
When Luz was on edge with the events of Yesterday’s Lie, she refused to tell her friends, especially Amity, about it and tried to lie her way out of it until Amity called her out. Amity assured her that she just wanted to help and be someone Luz could talk to and not hide from, someone she could be honest with.
Amity wanted Luz to be honest with her, yet she lied again in Reaching Out. She was acting rash and uneasy due to it being the anniversary of her dad’s death, which is completely valid, but she still thought it would be a good idea to lie about setting off an alarm to alert Amity’s abusive parents to her location? Yes, she didn’t want to ruin her girlfriend’s special day which is why she lied, but she didn’t have to lie about something as big as that. She didn’t know at the time that Alador wanted to be a better father, she just thought he was the same as Odalia.
When Luz helped Phillip, she had an overwhelming feeling that everything took place because of her. Months passed by (likely 2-3) and she was still scared of telling her friends about it, specifically Amity. Hunter knew about it and he assured her that they would be fine with it since it wasn’t her fault due to it being unintentional, but she still hid it from everyone. When Luz was revealed for helping Phillip, she tried to change the subject to Hunter being a grimwalker. Great friendship, out your friend who had an even bigger secret than you to everyone. Luz lied to Amity again with that major secret but Amity still managed to tolerate her and kindly tell her to quit lying.
Even after Luz PROMISED to never lie to Amity again, she still lied again. She still decided that she would leave the Isles since she thought everything was her fault even though she was assured otherwise. She still wanted to leave the Isles and Amity. Everyone assured Luz it was okay but she didn’t listen.
With her other friends, they should’ve gotten fed up with Luz’s lying as well. She had plenty of time to tell everyone about helping Phillip but she didn’t do it until the very last moment. Luz left Camila for the demon realm during the summer (not thinking about if she would possibly get trapped there) and was so lucky that her mother didn’t yell at her for it and forgave her. Luz was supposed to keep Hunter’s secret as a grimwalker and said he should tell them when he was ready, yet blurted out his secret in TTT to try to divert attention from herself. She didn’t get into an argument with Hunter for outing him when he wasn’t ready, her widowed and stressed mom for leaving and making her have self-doubt in her parental abilities, her girlfriend for continuously lying, and her friends for being dishonest about a big issue. Her loved ones just instantly forgave her and put up with her. Amity and Camila were already insecure about being a part of Luz’s life yet she still lied to them about major issues.
TLDR
Luz Noceda had continuously lied to her friends, specifically her girlfriend, throughout the show and easily got forgiven for it. She barely suffered consequences for her actions and everyone put up with her. Her friends assured her various times that they care about her but she still was dishonest and even OUTED someone who had a bigger secret than her. Luz’s friends should have gotten tired of her constant lying but they never did.

Hi!
May I please request all the characters reacting to y/n's self-harm scars?
If your not comfortable with that it's cool.
Thank you either way ❤️
Tumblr media
!!Major tw for self-harm!! If you aren't comfortable with that please skip. Also, I'm sorry if I depict anything wrong. And I'm going to exclude Gus and Collecter since it feels weird to do this with the kids.
Amity: Once she saw your scars it didn't occur to her the source of said scars. In fact, she thinks someone else did it and was pissed the fuck off. "Who hurt you." was all she could muster. Once you told her the truth her whole demeanor shifts. She goes from wanting to stab someone to looking like she was going to cry. She wraps you in abomination goop as a makeshift blanket. She was not willing to leave your side for any reason.
Luz: She's basically crying at the scars regardless of who did it. She just hates seeing hurt okay? :( But when she learns you did it she freezes. She doesn't believe it in the slightest. Starts talking about how much she loves you. Granted she's saying 100 words per second so you can only hear bits and pieces of what she's saying. But she gets her point across. That point is: I love you so much and I'm sorry you had to go through that.
Willow: She doesn't mention them once she first sees them. It's none of her business, they all look pretty healed so why push? But a few days later when you guys are just normally talking she casually brings it up. You don't know how to respond. After a few moments, you tell her the truth. And you can see it on her face, the way it hits her like a sack of bricks. The fact that she didn't ask adds to the guilt. But this isn't a moment to focus on herself. She hugs you. The next day she takes you on a really nice date.
Hunter: Once he notices he does (correctly) assume the reason. But he doesn't want to believe himself. It is pretty understandable why you would want your s/o self-harming. But he knows that if he's right but doesn't talk to you he'll regret it forever. So, despite his nervousness, he asks you. He says multiple times that it's "probably not why." His heart sinks when you confirm his fears. You're immediately wrapped in a hug. He keeps talking about how sorry he is that he didn't help, as well as how much he loves you. And he means every word of it.
Vee: She does not dance around the question. Once she sees the scars she just straight up asked, "Why are there scars all over your arms?" So that was very jarring. Once you end up telling her she just stood there. Before wrapping her tail and arms around you. You felt extra secure. She is going to let you know how much you mean to her.
Raine: They know what your scars are from the moment they see them. They don't point the scars out so that you don't get uncomfortable. They do however become way nicer (if that's even possible.) Every chance they get they'll complement you. It's a very obvious but welcomed change.
Eda: Well shit. She's not even going to ask she knows what the scars are from and she's pissed. Not at you, at herself for not noticing. She hugs you and starts apologizing without an explanation. Once she does explain she makes very clear that she's not mad at you and will help you stop.
Emira: Since she's the oldest of the Blight twins I feel like she had a lot of the pressure to be the perfect child before Amity. (Edric was just kinda ignored.) But she didn't have much of a support system so she did have thoughts she never went through with them. But Titan does it break her heart to see you going through that? Her approach was way more gentle than anyone. She staged a mini-therapy for you.
Edric: On the other hand he's pretty clueless. When you tell him he is very sad. He doesn't know what to do but he starts buying you a bunch of things. He wants you to know how valuable you are.
Lilith: She has no clue how to react. She doesn't even know what you did but her blood feels like ice with how many scars you have. She asks what happened and who hurt you. She starts tearing up when you reveal the truth. She ends up cuddling with you and tries to make you feel as secure as possible.

Summary: Let’s be honest who doesn’t enjoy a fluffy Dick Winters fic. I just can’t help myself. I also went for a header for this fic instead of a moodboard, I’m not entirely sure why but I quite like the aesthetic and i didn’t want to give too much away for the fic. Pairings: Dick Winters x f!reader

Eugene sighed as he watched Y/n gag again, spitting out the remainder of her breakfast in spluttering breaths.
“Y/n, I’m real worried about ya. This ain’t normal, Chérie,” Eugene’s forehead creased as he smoothed the loose strands away from her face. Y/n gave him a weary smile, her eyes watery from the effort. The nausea had come in a sudden wave and she’d just made it outside, out of view when she brought up the contents of her stomach. Luckily, it had been only Eugene passing by otherwise she’d be in real trouble.
“Gene, I’m fine. I promise,” she tried to reassure him but Eugene didn’t look convinced, his handsome features set in a harsh glare, which reminded Y/n of the look he’d given Winters and Welsh in Holland after Moose had been shot.
“You need to tell him sooner or later. I suggest sooner because if what we’re told is true we are bound for the Pacific. I can’t let you jump out of a plane in your condition…”
“Would you keep it down, Gene? I don’t want the whole company to know,” Y/n hissed.
“Or Major Winters apparently,” Eugene added nonchalantly. You always hated it when the Cajun medic was right and he always took great pride in correcting her.
“I’ll tell him Gene, I promise. Just give me some more time would you.” Eugene nodded begrudgingly. She knew he meant well but she was still trying to figure out the situation herself. The last thing she need was for Dick to hear the news from the likes of George Luz or Nixon.
Y/n entered the temporary mess hall shortly after Eugene, having recovered from her early episode and took her seat between Webster and Talbert.
“You’re looking a little green there, Darlin’,” Bull commented from across the table and Floyd reached across to rest his hand against her forehead.
“You’re a little bit warm Y/n. Are you sure you’re feeling okay?” Floyd asked, which caught the attention of George, Liebgott and Webster who we’re all looking on expectantly.
“I’m fine. I promise,” Y/n tried to reassure them but just at that moment Chuck and Shifty walked by with more plates of food and the nausea began growing in her stomach again. The pair took their seat next to Floyd and Y/n fought the urge to run from the room, digging her fingernails into the wooden table to try and keep herself grounded.
“Y/n, are you okay?” Webster asked, at this point, Y/n realised she must look like she was going to be sick because Webster and Floyd both shuffled to the side a little.
The bile rising in her throat answered that question, “No!” Y/n felt her legs carrying her from the hall, hurrying down the steps and outside before her stomach erupted again and she felt herself choking on her stomach acid. A hand was placed on the small of her back and she tried to shake Eugene off again but he wouldn’t budge.
“Gene, I said I’m fine,” she spun round to face him but was face-to-face with the five officers.
“Y/l/n, are you feeling okay?” Dick asked, trying to keep a straight face but concern was evident in his eyes.
“I…I’m fine… umm Sir,” Y/n felt herself saluting the officers and they all just stared at her in confusion.
“You don’t look fine,” Nixon commented, seemingly amused by watching his friend try and fight the urge to comfort the woman he loved.
“No, you look like shit Y/l/n. Get yourself to see Doc Roe,” Spiers suggested and Y/n nodded.
“I will, Sir. Thank you, Sir.”
The other four officers continued towards the mess hall but Dick stayed outside, watching to make sure they retreated before turning back to Y/n.
“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” He reached forward to touch her cheek but she flinched away, wiping her mouth in the sleeve of her jacket. “Talk to me, please. You’ve been avoiding me and I don’t know what I’ve done wrong.” Dick looked defeated, his forehead wrinkled and his eyes watched her sadly. Y/n hadn’t realised the effect her disappearing acts had on the Major. He was hurt.
“You haven’t don’t anything wrong, Dick,” she began but the tears were already beginning to trickle down her cheeks and she could no longer contain the choked sob that spilled from her lips.
“It’s all my fault,” she wailed, balling her hands into fists to cover her face. Dick was by her side in an instant, his arms wrapping securely around her frame.
“Whatever it is, we'll get through it together. You never have to hide from me,” he whispered into her hair but this only allowed for more tears to form in her eyes.
“No, you’re going to hate me,” she blubbered and Dick smiled at her softly, the corners of his lips turning upwards as he fought back a grin.
“I could never hate you. I love you, never forget that.”
Dick placed his hand on the small of her back, guiding her into the main house and up to his office, his hand never leaving her back and just that comforting touch helped to dull the emotions slightly. Once inside Dick’s office, he guided her to a chair and sat her down, kneeling before her, he placed a kiss on the palm of her right hand.
“So what is it? What’s wrong? Are you sick? Have you seen Doc Roe?” Dick’s questions came in a flood and Y/n barely had time to process them.
“I’m sorry,” Dick apologised, realising he was rambling like a madman. “Take your time.”
“Oh Dick, why are you so perfect?” Y/n asked, running her fingers through his red locks, as Dick blushed the colour of his hair.
“I’m pregnant,” she blurted out, no longer able to hold back the secret she’d been keeping for months. Dick’s face was every shade of grey before he finally spoke, “But how? When? How long have you known.”
“Well, I think you should know how Major. You know that night in Haguenau when we umm… on the desk and umm… and Captain Nixon walked in and…well you get the idea. I’ve known for about two months
“Two months! You mean you knew all this time and you didn’t tell me,” Dick's face was creased with lines of worry, hurt shining in his eyes and Y/n could feel the nausea growing in the pit of her stomach again.
“Dick, I’m so sorry. I was just scared that you’d hate me a-and you’d hate this baby… I’m so sorry,” Y/n could no longer control the floodgates that burst forth under Dick's hurt gaze but his eyes soon softened. Y/n could feel him pulling her towards him, his large hand pressed against the small of her back as he whispered, “I could never hate you, Y/n. I love you.”
Y/n froze in his arms, pulling away from the Major to look at him, “You mean that. You mean that, you’re not just saying it because of the situation.”
“No Y/n,” Dick replied earnestly. “I should have told you sooner. For Pete’s sake, I should have told you every day since Toccoa because I’ve loved you every day since Toccoa.”
Dick’s smile was infectious and soon the couple were laughing in each other's arms. “As for this little one,” Dick placed his hand gently against her slightly rounded stomach, “well I already love them with all my heart.”
“Oh Dick, I love you so much,” Y/n leaned forward, sealing her lips to Dick’s, as her hand found its way to card through his hair.
“Hey Dick, did you see… oh for Christ Sake will you two just get a Goddamn room.” Lewis Nixon’s exasperated voice rang out through the otherwise quiet room, his booming personality pulling the couple apart quickly.
“Lew, if you hadn’t noticed we keep getting a room and you keep barging in,” Dick retorted, straightening his uniform shirt as he spoke.
“Toché,” Lewis replied, waving his hand at them, “Carry on.”
Dick smiled at Y/n as Lewis slammed the door loudly behind him. “Right, where were we?”
“I don’t know,” Y/n replied, grinning mischievously, “But I recall that last time there was a desk involved.”
“Oh really,” Dick grinned back at her, “Well maybe I could refresh your memory.”

Going back through TOH's episodes, it strikes me how boring they are. Part of the problem seems to be how criminally unfunny the show is, generally speaking. I can count how many times I've laughed on one hand. In fact I can list them:
There was the "It's been my dream since I was a boy" guy pushing kids off cliffs (Moving Hassle), Luz's "He'll be fine" after throwing Hunter overboard - and then his subsequent re-entry (Hunting Palismen) - and lastly Luz tumbling offscreen in front of Amity after a spider crawls on her face (Grom). That's 3 scenes, 4 jokes if we're being charitable. And sure, maybe my sense of humour is just incompatible with TOH's and I'm being harsh.
But I can't deny that I just feel like there's no rewatch value in TOH? Like it's just... the jokes are so bad to the point it's not fun, it's not entertaining, it's a slog, I see no value in retreading the same ground. And I am a SERIAL rewatcher! This is coming from someone who spends maybe 85% of their time experiencing the same stories! I love seeing well-done media all over again, because even if I know what's going to happen or what they will say, a well-structured joke or a skillfully delivered line is still gonna engage me.
I can't even recommend the show to anyone because I HAVE in the past... and what ends up happening is they watch the first couple episodes, get bored, go "I recognize that you like this, but it's not my thing" and drop it. And I CAN'T BLAME THAT! Because that's how I reacted too when I got into the show! I only stuck with it because it seemed like it was going really interesting places. And it tried to, I think, and failed.
I'm also a very fandom-heavy person so TOH's boring episodes have made it increasingly harder for me to stay within it. Because I'm not rewatching anything, I can see myself in real time as I forget more and more of the plotlines, and even a lot of the characters. It's just... kind of disappointing. It's like I just had a gradual fizzling out of interest. I don't even hate the show, which might be better in some ways - instead I just can't muster enough shits to feel any type of way towards it.
I rambled a bit but I guess my ultimate ask here was: what are your thoughts on whether or not TOH manages to entertain new/old viewers?
So I like S1. I think the characters are what carry it and that they are at their most interesting, EASILY, in S1.
The vast majority of S1, in terms of concepts and executions for plots, is OKAY AT BEST.
This actually just comes down to a simple tonal decision of TOH and also just the fact that a boring world with boring magic creates little to do with bog standard plots and TOH actually has a LOT of bog standard plotting. It is a pretty classic story structurally and takes genuinely very few risks in the structure... Which is okay in theory.
There is nothing wrong with not reinventing the wheel and TOH talks a big game about subverting tropes but no. As a fantasy fan, I can tell you this is EXCEPTIONALLY normal. Like... Insultingly from how much it talks a big game. Especially because if you're going to do classic, you have three options: Shoot the moon, lean into the unique elements of your concept or do it VERY. VERY. WELL.
And remember: They did a body swap episode and it is one of the most hated episodes of the entire show. That's not a good sign.
But this touches on the second problem I brought up: This is a boring world with boring magic. Because TOH's fantasy world is so basic, has little magic and little flair with its magic, it inherently limits what it can do. Now, it doesn't have to be this way but the show made it this way with how little we see of it, how limited it is (like how plant magic is 99% vines), and how often it just blatantly makes one to one comparisons between it and our world with effectively NOTHING altered like how the covens are just jobs, right down to them being introduced through a job fair and a boring one at that.
So when we look at a classic episode concept like the body swap episode, the three plots are... Easily replicated elsewhere. One person gets in trouble in the swap's job because they don't know what they're doing (with the most unique twist of this actually landing them in prison), a classic animal plot where they're taken in by a place that seems cozy and then isn't with literally no changes, and finally... Teenager pisses off bullies and agrees to jump DEAD MAN'S GORGE! But instead of skateboards and people really building it up, its rat beasts.
None of these plots are actually bad, they're go tos for a reason, but... No one is bringing anything special to this. Luz is entirely ignored so her character may as well not matter, Eda is doing NOTHING to add to her plot and King... King is fun for about two minutes leading the bullies and otherwise is just any other character in this situation. It's not bad, I personally enjoy parts of the episode... But it's nothing special. From the second the thing that X character is going to do is revealed, you can guess every step of the plot and they don't even really throw in good jokes in the process. A couple jokes but nothing memorable because everything is weirdly subdued compared to how other shows would be, even in an episode that is definitely trying to be more over the top.
And this runs into the inherent tonal issue of TOH: It doesn't want to be an adventure comedy. Those are genres that are commonly really over the top. They hear jump the shark and go "How about a shark jumping ten other sharks in order to finish making a can of tuna for their fire giant overlord?" And the face of this fact, in that the genres it pitches itself as for the first two episodes!
TOH flatly refuses to be silly and over the top. It's characters are very... 'realistic'. I don't mean real, just that they're meant to feel more mature by being more in control. They don't let them interrupt each other for a joke, they don't let a character be potentially OOC for a one off gag like Hop Pop screaming "EAT THE RICH!" or Sprig asking "Have you ever killed a a man, Hop Pop," and I can only think of one time Luz got mad for the sake of a joke and honestly, yelling about the Rusty Smidge barely comes across as a joke because of how genuine the anger feels after a point. Otherwise, stuff that would normally get exaggerated frustration or the like to at least let you laugh at the reaction just... doesn't get one, like how Luz yells about Luzura being killed off but then... Just walks off and is passive aggressive mostly instead of even exasperated. For a drama or romance, this is not a bad approach but for even just an adventure kid's show... It's not great to put it mildly because people meet odd situations with weird levels of nonchalance. Not quite irony poisoned levels but getting there.
It's why TOH is mostly remembered for the romance and drama episodes. Not only do they allow some of the romance scenes to actually include melodrama, they also just fit how the characters act better. It's why Amity has some of the biggest emotions of the series and why Lumity have such great lines between each other because they're actually willing to lean into the sort of genre fiction that they're doing. This is also why S2 works better than S1 because a lot of the pretense of being a comedy adventure gets dropped but like... There's still plenty of boring in S2 with stuff like how Elsewhere Elsewhen takes time travel and includes a couple jokes at the beginning and then is just... horribly bland and barely qualifies as an adventure.
This lack of allowing people to be emotional and jokey also leads to the reliance on comic relief characters. People like Gus, King or Hooty, or S2 Lilith, who the characters can mock in someway, including the writers. Characters who can be the punchline even if it means a lot of people come off a lot meaner than they should, i.e. Luz absolutely rejecting Hooty for the vast majority of the series despite supposedly liking the weird and rejected. That also means that most of the time they're not on screen, either the scene starts getting pretty dry or you have a character suddenly warp to be comic relief, like how Eda gets in some S2 episodes like Elsewhere Elsewhen or Eclipse Lake where suddenly she's MUCH more of a joke than she normally is and also REALLY bad at it too and seeming potentially brain dead for it. Thanks to Them even does this to Amity even though she is probably the last person in the cast to make sense as a sudden clutz.
All of this stuff makes it so that if you go in wanting a kid's show, a fantasy show, ANYTHING that is pitched in the first episode... S1 is going to be just okay to you. I enjoyed it... But I also fell off when I first watched it. I thought the characters were good but none of it stuck with me as actually memorable and I watched until I think Adventure in the Elements. I never was never compelled to come back until Lumity animations (literally THE Little Miss Perfect animatic that is nowadays probably hard to find actually) made me go "I remember this show being neat." And Lumity was what kept me, not because I was generally laughing or calling these episodes something special. In fact, that sense of unsatisfaction is probably why I watched through it faster than Amphibia. No one episode of TOH is really great to watch on its own because... It's just kind of boring, or like half of it is boring because the B plots across the board are SO BLAND. S1 or 2 for that matter since Lumity starts getting boring B plots like with the archives or finding out the author of Azura. Both concepts btw that could have been really interesting setups and instead... If you're not into blushing Amity, get FUUUUUCKED.
That's without getting into REPETITION. Repetition kills comedy so King having one joke for S1 and also taking up like half of the B plots for the first ten episodes means you are going to be in agony eventually anytime someone talks to him because you know where it's going and you have DEFINITELY heard this joke before. And you know, he also gets three repetitive B plots which just hurts the joke even more, even as they try to make twists on it, and hurts the feeling that the show is doing... Anything..
It's just not good. Which is probably why once the characters and the 'subversive/unique' elements of the show both weakened, more and more people left because... Why would you keep watching this then? Those elements are what made up for boring plots with boring execution in a world that didn't allow for more interesting storytelling because it had few ideas and expanded on NONE OF THEM. So of course people pitch it using the elements that say "this isn't like other kids shows/fantasy shows" because if you pitch it to people who like those... They'll just be disappointed eventually and bored quickly. Like i think a lot of people did to be quite honest.
And a lack of creativity, and a lack of genre understanding, isn't something time could have ever fixed.
======+++++======
The short version of proving this point btw is going "Compare Bumi's introductory episode, which is a character giving three trials to prove another's worth, versus when the Bat Queen challenges Luz. One is exceptionally funny, interesting and has genuinely interesting twists while the other is... There. So very there. Painfully just... there. Not even bad, just... There.
Also, yes, comedy is extremely subjective which is why I tried to talk more about how a lot of these premises are boring because that can be a bit more objective.

looking back at the show, don't you think that Luz was the reason why she couldn't fit in? The show paints it as people not liking her for her weirdness, but in episode 1, her classmates and others seemed to not like her because she did things that generally made them uncomfortable (the spiders, bringing in fireworks, the snakes, etc). People aren't going to "understand" you if you do disturbing and harmful things. I like Luz btw I'm just pointing this out because it's something I noticed.
The show sets Luz up as this character who doesn't fit in, which is why she struggles with having friends, and why her mother sends her to summer camp, causing her to run away. The problem is that we're told this information and the only thing that demonstrates how Luz doesn't fit in is when she is doing dangerous stuff like bringing live snakes and fireworks to school. She also ad-libs a major part of a school play, which if you know anything about theater kids, they absolutely hate it when actors go off-script. It's not a demonstration of how creative Luz is, but how she doesn't think about how her actions might affect other people. If anything, it implies how Luz is kinda selfish and doesn't think things through. This is a great set up for character development, but that's the last we ever hear about Luz struggling to fit in.
At Hexside, Luz makes friends rather easily; she's never treated as an outsider--despite humans being an anomaly in the Demon Realm--and people accept her as she is. So her line in For the Future about "just wanting to be understood" makes no sense because this is the first time she has voiced this concern and literally every friend she has made in the BI have done nothing but love and support her.
The only other time we learn about Luz's time on earth is in Thanks to Them, when she struggled in school because the subjects were boring and two grown women in the park make fun of her behind her back for playing with snakeskins. Luz never hears this by the way, but her mother does and immediately goes to Luz' defense. This isn't enough to portray Luz as an outsider so we only have episode 1 to go by, which if you think about it, portrays Luz as selfish and not thinking about other people.
(And realistically, if Luz was bringing in fireworks and dangerous animals to school, that would be grounds for expulsion. The principal is doing his job trying to keep the school safe and is also doing what he thinks will help Luz socialize better. Yet he is portrayed as being in the wrong for this).
In the end, I'm not sure what Luz's character arc is because the show tells us her problems but literally shows us the opposite; we only see her endanger other students and the tone tells us we're supposed to see it as funny, we're never shown her peers bullying her for liking weird and creepy things. She tells us she wants to be understood but we're shown she's received nothing but kindness and support from both her mother and her BI friends.
With this kind of setup, you could easily interpret Luz as a selfish character who got everything she wanted in the end without having to work for it.
That is bad.

"i thought it would be fun to submit the oc of mine whose design i like the most (because most of my art is in the realm of character design) and it turns out the answer is two of them. they're splatoon fan characters, based on the various 'idol groups' of the series, but i mostly took inspiration from off the hook (in their original outfits) in terms of the balance between shared motifs and distinct features. most likely because they're some of my oldest ocs in terms of when i first made digital art of them, i've come up with a lot of fun details to work their motifs into, like how all of their facial features above their noses are shaped like the curve of the eye on their mask, and how basically all of their clothing has a 1-1 connection with the other person's clothing in that area. i also want to specifically point out their eyeliner because that was one of their most recent design additions and i feel like it adds SO MUCH. their previous iteration is barely any different (aside from being on the other side of a major leap in art quality) but without that one detail they look so much more bland."
Tendou Satori | Haikyuu
Tumblr media
"he's jus a liddle guy"
Lan, Aeon of The Hunt | Honkai: Star Rail
Tumblr media
""With no end to hate and no boundaries to war, how much concern do you shoulder? With determined eyes and the arrow drawn, the Reignbow Arbiter needs not turn back hither." — Worlds History as a Mirror, Xianzhou The Aeon known as the Reignbow Arbiter wanders endlessly between worlds to destroy the undead beings that once poisoned their homeworld. The cost of the hunt was never a consideration for Lan. There is often no difference between the salvation they offer and total destruction. (In-game Data Bank)"
Ollie (Mantis form) | Shiloh
Tumblr media
"Normally he’s a human and that design is pretty good too"
Ryuji Sakamoto | Persona 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I just think he's neat! Ryuji is an early party member in Persona 5. He's one of the more... argumentative characters, and often causes a bit of conflict in the group, but he still ends up on good terms with everyone. He's also known as Skull, cause of the mask he wears when in Persona's dungeons and stuff. Anyways, I just think his visual design is very good, the black and yellow go very well together, and he always has a very confident look."
Rick Shades | Epithet Erased
Tumblr media
"Epithet Erased has so many incredibly solid designs. They blend with the zany nature of the universe and I love it so much. Rick's design looks like a dark magic businessman who just washed up on the beach, yet still is zany enough that you could realistically see his superpower pretty much equaling the power of friendship."

"This is my favourite design for The Riddler; he looks so snappable."

Hunter Deamonne, Heart Of Novocaine
Warning: major spoilers for The Owl House seasons 2 and 3!
You made me tough, you made me numb
You are the maker of what I’ve become
There is no doubt that Hunter, prior to Hunting Palismen (and even after it, arguably), was this tough, young (too young) soldier, numb to everything that casted some shadows over his Emperor's actions. He justifies Belos in any way possible (the Titan's plans must be followed even when they're intricate, it's for the greater good), because it means to absolve himself too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Belos is the maker of what he's become in so many ways. He literally made him from the bones of his brother, he molded his mind for who knows how many years (it is unclear how long it has been since Hunter's birth), keeping him isolated from anyone even inside the castle. Belos never wanted a brother, he wanted a puppet.
And now I am strong where I was weak
And I am unafraid of being me
But Hunter eventually slipped out of Belos' grip. He challenged Belos' rules. Sure, at first he did so to help him, to prove himself to him. By doing so, though, he did exactly what Belos feared: he became his own person, with passions and connections and his own thoughts, which ultimately didn't align with those of the Emperor. Maybe they aligned with his teachings (don't lie, Hunter, it pains the Titan. Always respect your superiors. Obey), but not with his will. Belos sure never wanted Hunter to get close to Darius, he didn't want the kid close to anyone other than him. He sure didn't want Hunter to end up in the human realm and discover what actual familial love looks like, how it feels like, that it doesn't have to be earned.
Tumblr media
So say hello to the monster that you made
Thank you for the pain
Thank you for the hate
Thank you for the way
That you left me scarred
Thank you for the stain
That you left on my brain
Now because of you
I’ve got a heart of novocaine
A heart of novocaine
Things change so fast. They're really confusing. Suddenly multiple figures are uncomfortable with the way Hunter expresses his respect, which is the way Belos taught him. And yet these figures are just as worthy of respect as he used to be in Hunter's eyes, so why do they not want it? Why does Camila look embarrassed when Hunter kneels before her, why does she ask him to never do it again? Why is Darius so frustrated with him for following orders, when that is what is required of the weakest of soldiers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are so many ways his uncle got into Hunter's mind and skin. The way he flinches when someone touches him without proper warning or when he expects a punishment, the way he never asks for help because he should be able to do it on his own, even some of his speech patterns come from Belos.
Once upon a time you had control
And lorded over my poor soul
And I trusted you but now I see
You never knew the real me
Belos used to control everything in Hunter's life. He was suffocating, to the point where Hunter regards the trial on a mountain of his scout training as a fond memory, while Steve regards it as some nightmarish experience. His modus operandi is so ingrained in Hunter that we see in Hunting Palismen and Eclipse Lake that he sees everything as either worthy of being sought and thus earned through trials, or expendable. He uses the palismen as leverage with Luz, he uses Luz as leverage with Amity, and it doesn't feel wrong to him, because it's strategy, just a tool to get him what he wants. Clearly, he's seen this same game play out countless times in the throne room, standing by his uncle's side.
All that comes to an end, though. A visit to his uncle's mindscape reveals that not only his motives aren't the ones he flaunts, not only has he lied for ages about his identity and goal: he also lied about Hunter, about their family, about his goals for him. Hunter is a tool to Belos, or a replacement of someone else as best. But just like he failed to understand Caleb, Belos fails to understand Hunter.
Tumblr media
To Belos, Caleb was probably the caregiver, the one who was there for him when he got a scraped knee or woke up from a nightmare. But they grew up and Caleb became his own person, because little Philip wasn’t so little anymore and could handle himself. Caleb challenged what they were taught, and found his own morals and beliefs. Philip was never able to do the same, for four hundred years. In fact, he expects Hunter to be just like his older brother, without realizing that Caleb was never the idea he had of him, so Hunter (and all the other grimwalkers) can't help but fail him. Because they will always end up growing into their own person.
Now I’m angry and you wonder why
You see the fire burning In my eyes
Once you had me but you lost me now
And there’s no going back
When he first faces the truth about Belos, Hunter is swarmed by fear. But I believe that, with time, especially in the human realm, he also develops resentment towards Belos. Resentment for being lied to, for being used, for being born even, for being barred from choosing his own path.
Belos may momentarily force himself on Hunter, possess him and even use his very hand to take the life of his first friend, Flapjack, but it's too late. Hunter learned who he is, he likes to be his own person with his own dreams and goals, and that freedom can only end on his own terms.
So say hello to the monster that you made
He knows he's a monster to Belos now. He embodies so many things he hates: witches, wild magic, autonomy, self-affirmation. And those are the things Hunter rubs in his face as he resists Belos' grip on his body and mind, before ending it on his own terms. That speech was his last act in his mind, and he chose to have it be a speech of hopes and dreams for the future and of love and tenderness for the unruly magic Belos despised, because Hunter isn't Belos, and Hunter loves those things and wants those things.
Tumblr media
Thank you for the pain
Thank you for the hate
Thank you the way
That you left me scarred
Thank you for the stain
That you left on my brain
Now because of you
I’ve got a heart of novocaine
A heart of novocaine
My fear has died, my tears have dried, I don’t feel afraid and I won’t run away
I believe in me and now I see right through your lies hiding behind your eyes
Because of you I’ll make it through
Nothing can hurt me like you did anymore
Ever since Hollow Mind, Hunter was terrified of the very idea of being in Belos' presence again, and understandably so given his uncle had tried to kill him while he was still in his mindscape. In King's Tide he manages to fight him, but still stays on the sidelines. He talks back to him for probably the first time in his life, but he's still terrified.
At the end of Thanks To Them Hunter isn't afraid, not in the same way. Belos is in his blood, Flapjack is agonizing. It can't really get any worse, can it? Hunter knows what Belos' goals are, so he knows how to disrupt them. He knows how to keep his friends safe. And he does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for the pain
Thank you for the hate
Thank you for the way that you
Left me scarred
Now there’s nothing you can say
To wash it all away
Yeah because of you
I’ve got a heart of novocaine
A heart of novocaine
A heart of novocaine

What do you think of "Watching and Dreaming"?
oooh thank you for asking! took me a bit to get to it but today i am MEDICATED and MOSTLY FINISHED WITH CLEANING so let's see what i can shake out of the ol' brainpan
gonna put this under a cut because it's probably going to get long, but overall: i liked it! i think it wrapped everything up pretty well, did not leave any major plot points unaddressed, and i found the timeskip epilogue to be sweet and hopeful but not saccharine or cloying.
in more detail:
seeing the three episodes we got for season 3 makes me wish so badly that we'd gotten the full run of the show that the crew wanted. i've seen word from the last post-hoot that they found out the show was canceled right before the mid-s2 hiatus, which tracks with the overall pacing and direction of the back half of s2, and it's just a tragedy. i think they did a really good job with what they had, considering the insanely compressed runtime they were given to work with.
i'm a little disappointed that the other kids didn't get more screentime in the final episode. it makes sense but i wish we had gotten more of them and their interactions with each other outside of Luz - and their interactions with Camila, too.
i honestly really loved the whole thing with the Collector. i know a lot of people don't for various reasons, but, Shrug Emoji. some of the criticisms of his whole arc really don't make sense to me - i feel like the people who are mad that they did turn out to be a misguided kid who didn't understand the gravity of what they were doing or how it affected others for various reasons (such as: being a child, having been isolated for centuries with only Philip for company, being immortal and having incredible reality-warping powers) and changed their tune when it was explained to them just, uh... were not really paying attention? lmao?
like it was pretty obvious from his first appearance that he was a child or at least very childlike, and we can easily infer from those scenes that he's been held captive and manipulated by Philip under the guise of friendship and 'letting him free to play', so everything else follows pretty naturally from that.
i liked how it was Luz, with her own childhood experience of death and grief, who recognized what was going on here and sought to explain it to them. she's always been an empathetic person who tries to see the best in others and give them the benefit of the doubt. sometimes, like with Philip, this comes back to bite her, but most of the time it's good and helpful.
i really like how we had someone just outright tell her "lmao no" to her whole "but am i JUST AS BAD as Philip???" thing. like honey, no, you have made some clumsy mistakes while meaning well, and the thing you're the most guilty about is literally just 'helping a guy who manipulated and lied to you without realizing he was manipulating and lying to you', which is not even your fault, because HE LIED TO YOU. Philip has spent centuries carefully engineering his way into being able to commit genocide. these two things are not the same.
speaking of Philip: i also know a lot of people have been upset with his ending. honestly, i'm not! i think that it tracks very well with the kind of person he's always been - a stubborn, manipulative liar who sees himself as a victim and blames everyone else around him for the tragedies that he's experienced, many of which he's directly personally caused, and who has been given chance after chance to change his mind, change his behavior, change his beliefs, and simply refuses to.
like... some people are just assholes! i don't think that the fact that he ended up lying, manipulating, treating humans as supreme, and trying to commit witch genocide to the very bitter end means that he was like, Born Evil, i think it means that he was once a sweet kid who loved his brother who grew into a cruel, hateful, manipulative man who only saw certain people as Fully Persons and therefore deserving of existence, and felt like he had the authority to decide who is or is not a person.
and honestly like... The Owl House is a children's cartoon. it's rated Y7. it is for children and part of its purpose IS to teach children things, and i actually think that "sometimes, people will hurt you, and they'll lie and say they're doing it for your own good or for the greater good, or they'll have a sympathetic reason for doing it, but that doesn't actually matter because they keep hurting you and you do not owe them infinite chances to keep doing that" is a really good lesson to teach children.
Philip's story is a tragedy and the tragedy is that he easily COULD have done literally any other thing, but he refused to. he had chances! he refused to take them! he had centuries to go, "wait, am i the baddie?" and he did not. he murdered Caleb himself and then blamed witches for that. instead of treating the grimwalkers like family, he treated them like disposable toys to take his anger at Caleb out on. he lied, manipulated, killed, stole, and hurt countless people because he felt like they deserved it because of his own unhappiness.
some people are like this! it happens! i have met them and personally been harmed by them in ways that are going to impact me for the rest of my life and have, if not exactly ruined my life, made it a hell of a lot harder than it would have been otherwise.
so for me, seeing that the ultimate resolution of Philip's story is that he refused to change, he refused to admit any fault, he kept lying and manipulating and trying to hurt people, and eventually everyone he tried to hurt and lie to turned on him and got rid of him so he couldn't keep hurting them is very satisfying.
The Owl House is a show about how people have the capability to change, but the flip side of that is that it means they have to choose to do so, and some people won't. so what do you do then? what happens when someone is hateful, cruel, and dangerous, and won't stop trying to exterminate an entire race of people because he blames them for his own self-inflicted problems? what do you owe someone like that? how many chances should you give them? how often should you let them have the opportunity to hurt you or others again?
i think the fact that he went out so pathetically is also very fitting. to the very end he wouldn't own up to anything. he just kept trying to lie and manipulate. and like many people who act this way, when his manipulation didn't work, he dropped the mask and got mad.
so yeah! i liked that aspect of it, and i feel like a lot of the criticisms are honestly just... expecting Philip to have played a very different role in the story than imo he was set up to play. he was the contrast to people like Alador or Hunter or Amity or the Collector. he was the example of what happens when someone REFUSES to change and uses any chance you give them as a foothold to do more damage. so the ending where it's just, "sometimes you have to do what you can to protect yourself from people like that" is imo quite narratively cohesive, and i think that it also fits into the overall theme of "your character is determined by your actions." Philip COULD HAVE ended differently, but he didn't, because of his own actions.
let's see... i feel very (seesawing hand motion) about the scene with Luz and Papa Titan. overall i think i like it.
i like the idea that Luz found everything through her own ingenuity and Philip didn't because he didn't treat the Isles as worth studying!
but that being said, i think there's something quite powerful about the idea of the land itself as a being with some limited level of agency, able to open itself and its resources up to someone who approaches it with respect and able to reject someone who comes in to rapaciously plunder it in order to kill those who live on it, ESPECIALLY given the fact that Philip is, literally, a white Puritan.
like that's definitely also a very meaningful narrative to me!
i don't really talk about this a whole lot here, for various reasons, but half of my family is native (Osage, specifically.) i'm not connected to that side of my family or that aspect of my own heritage for Complicated Reasons including abuse and the ongoing effects of white supremacy and colonial violence causing those members of my family themselves to be disconnected from their heritage in a way that meant that i was, basically, raised as a white person who is visually Ethnically Ambiguous depending on how familiar the people looking at me are with what mixed native people look like.
however, as someone who has perhaps a more personal connection than some others in the fandom might to the idea of "white man from a colonizer culture comes into a land foreign to him, views them all as backwards evil savages who must be purged for the safety of the good white Christians, proceeds to plunder and misuse their resources for his own gains, destroys their connection to their own history and culture and installs himself as a figurehead leading them into death" as like, a narrative, i don't think that the idea that the Titan was watching what happened and subtly nudging or influencing events to the degree that he was able to (which was ultimately a very, very small one) is like... meaningless.
and i don't think that what he said to Luz negates any of the messaging of the series. he didn't say, "you were special All Along, so you deserve my powers." he said, "you're the one who's here right now, and you seem good enough."
like... she proved herself, by her actions, to be an open and caring person who wants to do good, and specifically cares deeply for the Isles and the people on them, to the point where she is willing to sacrifice herself for them. and she's the one who is here, right now, in this moment. and she is not a perfect person, but she's Good Enough.
i actually really like that! she's here and she's good enough. she's the one in a position to do something about it and she seems okay. i don't think that it does retroactively make her into a "chosen one", because she didn't get it through her birthright or anything, she was given it because she ended up there (because she sacrificed herself to save the Collector) and she had previously shown herself to be someone the Titan thought would use it well.
so i liked that! i think that, like with "you actually do not have to keep giving someone chances to hurt you when they are a shitty liar, even if they're also sad", "you're here and you're good enough" is a pretty good lesson!
what else, what else... loved the whole bit with Philip possessing Raine and them fighting him off. loved the sequence of the two of them duking it out in the throne room and the fact that Philip just BIT them - little brother behavior for sure. Raine is a stone-cold fucking badass.
one little detail i liked a lot is the bit where they're stuck in the goop in the throne room basically waiting to die, and Eda comes in - i specifically really love how the crew got the look of soft, fuzzy, unfocused confusion in their eyes because they don't have their glasses and can't see. there's a particular way that people who need glasses to see often look when they don't have them, and they got it really well, and i just really liked that detail!
the final fight was indeed Cool As Fuck. i love how anime TOH is.
i liked the epilogue! it was very sweet. i like that it showed how people grew and changed and repaired the Isles, while not completely erasing the damage that was done. i also think it did a good job of wrapping stuff up while still leaving a lot open - it did not, imo, fall into the "jobs and babies forever" trap of something like, say, the Harry Potter epilogue, but it showed us how things went and gave us a lot of room to imagine where they'll go from there.
also love everyone's new designs. Good For All Of Them. Amity got so fucking gay and Gus is so HANDSOME now!
also of course i was ecstatic over the Huntlow lmao - i can't believe i used to dislike it! i love how often she just kind of casually and fondly manhandles him. my friend Sharo said something to the effect of, "i like how the scene where they're sliding and he stumbles and she catches him shows that it's been so long since he had to do child soldier shit that his hot jock gf is now way stronger and more athletic and nimble than him" and i haven't been normal about it since! he's SOFT now!!
so, overall, i feel positively about it! there are a lot of small threads that got dropped, no doubt due to the series being canceled, but i think they wrapped everything up well, and i feel like everything that happened actually was pretty thematically on point. i am satisfied with it! i wish we'd gotten more, but i enjoy what we did get.

Okay, photos and screenshots from the two clips that were released!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Luz worried about her involvement with Belos.
Tumblr media
We know this is a major plot point and I have a sinking feeling that she'll never tell her friends, until monster Belos tells them when they have to fight him. Same way with Hunter.
I don't think her friends will hate her. In fact, I think that they'll understand because they've all been through some sort of trauma and they know what it's like to hold it in.
Tumblr media
Our sad boy. Someone give him a hug.
Our little batatas.
Tumblr media
Now, onto the next clip
I can't blame him. We all do that with bubble wrap.
Tumblr media
It's going to take Hunter some time to get out of the "guard" persona. But I laughed at his exchange with Camila
Tumblr media
I didn't notice this the first time watching it, but Hunter is nervous blushing.
Now she goes and checks on the girls
It's cool that it seems like all of them are cool with Vee.
Tumblr media
Alarm clock starts beeping
PROTECTIVE MODE ACTIVATED
Tumblr media
I absolutely adore how Amity protects Vee, considering she did lose her magic to a basilisk. And then there's Willow who just killed the alarm clock. Which I totally understand. There are some days I want to toss it out the window.
Tumblr media
I still think they have issues to work out, but it's so great seeing them get along.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep, she's freaked out. I love that Vee left Luz s but welcoming her home.
I'm so excited to see Camila interact with all of them and I think they're going to help her understand why Luz stayed there and why she wants to go back.
Man, this special is going to be great.

Dear TOH Fandom,
Pretty soon, I'm gonna be making my first multi-chap for TOH on Ao3 (GenericNam is my username there too), but I can't decide which fiction to decide on between my Ideas. So. I've decided to leave the choice in YOUR incredibly responsible hands (sarcasm).
Propaganda under the cut:
All fics would be Luz centric, or at least have her as one of the main characters, because she is my hyperfixation character. I will likely write all of them eventually, but this is to see which will be most popular.
1. Luz and Eda Swap AU: Luz is a witch and Eda is a human; they don't swap ages though, so Eda still takes on the role of sassy grandma and Luz is still the innocent happy-go-lucky delinquent. Luz is the Snake Lady instead of the Owl Lady. Eda wants to learn magic for personal reasons, and if she accidentally adopts several traumatized witches and demons along the way? Why not? Luz and Eda are both the main characters. It would have some series rewrite stuff about it, but there would be a lot of canon divergence because of the characters different goals. Would probably be pretty long.
2. Luz Palisman AU: Luz dies in a freak accident at some point before the Hexsquad get their palismans. Through some handwavy magic that can be explained in the fic, Luz becomes Amity's cat palisman, instead of Ghost. But anytime she tries to tell Amity who she is, some external force stops her. Luz has to balance figuring out how to return herself to being human, while also trying to help Amity stay afloat. Amity herself is having a lot of trouble, her parents don't cut her any slack, even while grieving Luz, and things just keep going downhill for her; good thing she at least has her palisman to comfort her. Luz and Amity are the main characters. Would be probably mid length.
3. Cliche Captured By Belos AU: Belos uses the memory tweezers in order to edit Luz's memories and gaslight her into working for him. Just one small problem… Luz is still a smol bean who loves making friends, regardless of how hard Belos tries making her hate witches. Luz is the main character, but Belos, Eda, and the Hexsquad all play major roles. Would probably be the shortest of the three options.

Honest thoughts on Hunter and Huntlow?
Tumblr media
Ok. So.
Originally I honestly wanted to write out a long, 10-bajillion page essay on everything I wanted to say, but talking with a friend and thinking it over, it’s not worth it. All I need to do really is go over some of the bullet points to explain my feelings and… frustrations.
I don’t particularly care for Hunter as a character. His redemption arc, despite supposedly taking up about 5 episodes, is the biggest mess the show’s ever had, filled with Hunter doing actions that would make Agony of a Witch Lilith call overkill and yet facing 0 pushback. Hunter threatens Luz to Amity’s face? Amity doesn’t show any resentment during ‘Labyrinth Runners’ and beyond. Hunter steals the key that has the Titans Blood that could get Luz home? She’s more concerned about redeeming him then anything else. Willow, Gus, Skara, and Viney get kidnapped by him, a guy who literally talks about ‘branding’ them and ‘separating them from their friends and families forever’ because he wanted a cape back? He has a last minute change of heart and suddenly he gets a father figure in a man who spent the entire episode hating him, a Penstagram, friends out of the people he just spent the last several hours ignoring when they told him they didn’t want to be part of the Emperor’s Coven, and a romantic interest out of a woman he almost made have a breakdown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of, I feel like I should mention my feelings about Huntlow. I don’t mind it in fannon so much because most people like to make Hunter out to be either a complete dork or a bruised bad boy, and I get the appeal of pairing that up with a character like Willow. But looking back at “Any Sport,” the concept of Huntlow becoming this massive ship that earned the hearts of a vast majority of fans just… baffles me. He lies to her about everything, kidnaps her and her friends, clearly screws her emotions up and make her blame herself for Hunter’s action’s, makes them kamikazee a ship to try and run from his attempts to turn them into religious zeolite’s, and even when he decides to have a last minute change of heart, she’s clearly on the verge of tears because of him. Honestly Hunter comes off worse to me then even Amity in ‘Teenage Abomination’ and ‘Covention.’ Yeah she was a terrible person who almost had Luz killed, but at least Amity never made Luz cry or berate herself for being being responsible for getting her friends hurt. And yet, for some reason *cough cough* bad writing *cough* the episode ends with Willow being like “Wow, this guy who just attempted to rip me from my best friends and loving family sure does type slow.” And that’s ignoring the fact Willow almost certainly knows about Eclipse Lake and how Hunter’s hurt both Luz and Amity. Why she would want to be friends with Hunter is beyond me, and it gets worse when Willow gets more upset over believing that Amity thinks she’s weak then she ever does at Hunter for anything he did.
Tumblr media
Also he makes Skara cry and I really don’t like that.
So, yeah… not sure if this is the answer you were expecting or wanted, but here it is; my honest opinions on Hunter and Huntlow. I hope I don’t lose too many fans over it, but honestly it’s at least nice to just vent about it a bit given how long I’ve felt about this. And don’t worry, I don’t plan on becoming a big anti-Huntlow account. I don’t plan on doing a lot more writing on my feelings. Though civil comments on your thoughts or responses would be appreciated and encouraged.

The Owl House - Hunter & Luz, Hunter & Camila - Tourette's Syndrome Awareness Month Prompt 1 : Diagnosis
Prompt : Write a fic in which a character (and maybe their friends or family) reacts to getting back a Tourette's diagnosis Headcanons : Tourettic!Hunter, Autistic!Hunter, FTM!Hunter (Caleb and the other grimwalkers were also FTM), Hunter has depression
Hunter wasn't entirely sure what he was being examined for, but he hardly minded not knowing. He just did what the doctor asked.
A few weeks after the third hours-long appointment, Camila checked the mail and returned with a letter with Hunter's name printed across the envelope. She explained to him that it was the results of his appointments and that whatever was inside would identify what exactly was different about his brain. He noted that she didn't use the word wrong like Belos would have.
So, he opened the envelope and unfolded the packet. The front page contained some basic information such as his name, birth date (or creation date, as the case may be, though these human doctors didn't know that), and a list of diagnoses.
Autism Spectrum Disorder Major Depressive Disorder Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Gender Dysphoria Tourette's Syndrome
"What does any of this mean?" he asked, bewildered. He recognized terms like disorder and syndrome, but he wasn't sure what the specific ones listed entailed, or how any doctor could look at him and extrapolate so many conditions when he was sure he hid his quirks very effectively.
"I'm admittedly not the most knowledgeable on what each one means in particular" Camila told him. "I think Luz would be more helpful there, but just know that you are loved regardless, and I will do what I can to accommodate you"
Hunter still wasn't quite sure what she was talking about, but he nodded gratefully before taking his packet and traveling up to Luz's room. He knocked on the door and, once let in, immediately handed her the packet, pointing at the list with a pleading expression. "What do these mean?"
"Oh, you got your results back!"
"Luz"
"Sorry, sorry" Luz chuckled. Admittedly, she was just happy for him, but she put on her serious face and actually took a look at the list. "Autism- Okay, well that's just you" she said. He looked at her with confusion, so she elaborated. "Like, the hand flapping and not always getting things" she explained. Hunter went bright red. "There's kind of a lot that falls under that. I'll show you some videos"
"What about all the other stuff?"
"Major Depressive Disorder : That's why you have long periods of feeling void or empty or sad. C-PTSD : That's why you freak out whenever you think of Belos"
"What- Hic!- Does it mean?"
"Well, the acronym is for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" she told him, pointing at the diagnosis on the page. "Trauma is when you undergo something notably bad- Belos' years of abuse definitely count- So, that's what the 'Traumatic' part means" she continued. "'Post' just means it affects you now that you're out of that situation. 'Stress' is just an umbrella term for things like your panic attacks and whatnot. And 'Complex' just means that this stemmed from multiple instances of trauma as opposed to just one thing"
"Oh, okay..."
"Gender Dysphoria : That's cause your gender identity doesn't match your birth assignment. It seems Caleb and all of the other grimwalkers also had this happen" she explained. Hunter nodded. "And Tourette's... Oh"
"Oh?"
"That just... Sorry, I didn't realize"
"Didn't- Hic! Haha!- Didn't realize what?" Hunter asked. His neck jerked to the side and he groaned in annoyance because those embarrassing little motions always got worse whenever he was stressed or confused and he hated it. How couldn't he, when Belos would always beat him for such motions or unauthorized shouting?
"Your tics" she told him. He raised an eyebrow. "You know, like the neck jerks and the random shouting" she explained and he went bright red again, even more so when he involuntarily whistled. "You hid them most of the time at first and they were gradual enough that I just assumed it was anxiety tics or something" she continued. "I didn't realize it was Tourette's"
"What- Haha! Haha! Loser! Mph!- Sorry. I'm sorry" Hunter apologized for the outburst, eyes shut as though expecting a hit. To his surprise, though, no such hit came. Instead, he felt arms wrap around his body and slowly opened his eyes to find Luz "hugging" him.
"Never apologize for that, please" Luz requested. Unsure of what to say, he just nodded.
"What is Tourette's?"
"Oh, it's a tic disorder" she explained, though he still seemed confused. "It just means that your random shouts and movements are involuntary and they aren't triggered by anything specific, though some things can make them better or worse"
"Stress makes them worse"
"I figured" Luz nodded. "But hey, now we know"
"Wait, so it's not my fault?"
"What's not your fault?"
"Belos always- Haha! Mph! Haha!- Always said that I was being bad and disobedient for- Mph!- Those" he explained. "He'd always- Haha!- Punish me for it, but I never really understood how to make it stop, I just- Haha!- Figured out how to hide them while I was around him"
"Oh, Hunter..." Luz said, her expression sad. "No, it's not your fault"
"Oh..." Hunter replied and then, without warning, tears began to leak from his eyes. "Oh"
"I'm so sorry he treated you that way" the human told him earnestly. "Just know that you're safe here and that no one here will ever hurt you for that, okay?"
"You mean that?"
"Of course, bud" Luz nodded. "Now, what do you think about sharing your results with the others?"
"Do I have to?"
"Do you not want them to know?" she asked, genuine. She didn't intend to tell anyone anything that he wouldn't want them knowing. "Or do you want me to tell them for you?"
"...Could you?"
"Yeah, of course" Luz nodded, taking the packet and leaving the room to begin delivering the news to the others, leaving Hunter to contemplate his new diagnoses.
There were names for what was different about him- Not wrong, just different. And his tics weren't his fault. And it was okay if he didn't hide them around his new family because they cared for him in ways Belos never could.
Huh he thought. Isn't that something?

I write about a character per day before W&D
Day 4: Gwendolyn Clawthorne
I have a weird interest in niche characters, despite their lack of appearance, they still managed to play a big role in a show. Eda and Lilith's mother is actually really interesting to me, despite very limited appearance in Season 2. A mother who is actually quite thoughtful, but maybe isn't the best at how to do so. And if that description somehow reminds you of Camila, it's because it is, I feel like there are some parallels between the two mothers.
The one reason why I want to write about Gwendolyn is partially because of the fact that both her and Camila got scammed while trying to help their daughter. Gwen got scammed when trying to cure Eda's curse, Camila when talking about her past mentioned her involvement in a scam, she was trying to earn more money to help Luz too. Mothers want to do everything to keep their children safe, and I hate people who used that to take advantage for themselves so much.
But noticed how Luz was doubting Gwen's new book being fishy. She had her fair share of thoughts with scammers and her mom before, and she saw through what's happening. It is important, because children can always see what's going on, and voice their opinions whenever they can. It's even better that both Gwen and Camila admitted their fault in front of Luz. I love these moments adults admitting their fault in front of their children, it's a really liberating moment for the relationship between children and adults. I really need to say this, one of the key of any type of relationship, is communication. And that will require listening and respecting the ideas from both side, and admitting their fault when they did. Don't tell a child they don't know better, they sometimes do, and it's fine to admit your fault to them, which both Camila and Gwen did, and it's great for their relationships.
Luz being a bridge for Gwen-Eda relationship, and later on Dell (her father) is really nice. Before Luz came, Eda's way of dealing with her own mom is to hide away. She didn't want to bother Gwen, and/or she had experienced her attempts of curing the curse by Gwen that obviously didn't work. This is a good case of two people having a disagreement for the same cause, that leading to a gap in their relationship. It's important to find a middle ground in these cases, and Luz's role in bonding them together is quite significant. By pointing out the mistakes Gwen's made, and the attempt to make things right for Eda, Luz had managed to find their common sense, and rebuilt Eda and Gwen's relationship. And her reward for that is the a puzzle piece to return to the human realm. Gwen really played an important role in the lore of the show.
The fact Gwen spent her majority of the time caring about Eda accidentally created a gap between her and Lilith. And I don't see this as Gwen's fault. Eda is simply required more attention from Gwen with the curse, Lilith is fine on her own. It is nice for Lilith and Gwen to also bond together at the end as well, they both will correct the past for a better future.
Overall, Gwen is not a bad character. Just like Camila, she's a mother who just think that what she did is the best for their children. And it is great that they both righted their wrong in their ways of raising their children.

So the new owl house episode :D (TOH SPOILERS)
LET’S GO LESBIANS!!
- first off, I have no idea why the collector was locked up? We can assume their idea of “games” aren’t very good for people and they are ridiculously powerful, but what even are they? It’s obvious they have fears of being alone and being betrayed... i wonder if the titan was the one who trapped him originally and that’s why being betrayed is a terrifying concept to him and why he’s so obsessed with Belos as his “new  friend”
- Wonderful that Dana basically said “yeah Odalia and Kikimora are NOT getting redemptions, GO HAM HATING THEM :DDD”, it’s nice that they acknowledge Odalia's and Alador’s different forms and severities of abuse and even Odalia’s abuse towards Alador.
- Eda having to play during the day of unitity is going to be A SPECTACLE alright (if it does happen at all). and RAINE AND EDA HAVE TO GET MARRIED AT THE END OF THE SHOW SWEAR TO GOD-- if that were to happen they might need to be put in a situation where they have to talk about their breakup and stuff
- i ADORE all the kid’s finale fits SO MUCH!!
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THEM, I HAVE TO DRAW FANART, CMON!!
-  I got spoiled that lumity were gonna kiss but NOTHING would have prepared me for how utterly soft and beautiful it was gonna be, GOD I LOVE THEM, it’s SUCH a wonderfully written romance about kids who FEEL like 14 year old kids in love. Also i watched the episode like, 20 minutes before i met up with my art tutor who had to sit through me screaming about lesbians  for 2 hours :D
- The fact that king can hear the collector wherever they are is probably gonna be a major plot point and i imagine it’s because he lit the tablet or something. Small theory that ties into the Collector!Luz theory: what if the collector is trying to posses king and somehow luz intervenes and she gets possessed instead? Just an idea.
- (also, SNRKRKKHHAHAHHBAHAHAH THE KIKIMORA IS SHORT JOKE--)
Tumblr media
- very off topic but these guy’s appearances  cant have this many piercing and cool haircuts and NOT be members of the team drawing themselves.
- YEEEEESSSSS PROTECTIVE GIRLFRIEND AMITY!!! I FEEL HER RAGE SO MUCH!!!! And i KNEW that sneaking into the day of unity wouldn’t be so easy, how much do they know and how is the real question tho. I dont think they would pull the “one of us is a traitor” plot point just cause they dont have the time
- UGGGHHHH THE RED FLAGS AND ABUSE CODING HURTTSSS, “BUSINESS PARTNER????” FUCK ODALIA, GOD!! (also yeah same Amity)
Tumblr media
- you have NO IDEA how hard i panicked when i thought hunter was taken, i know Luz was instead but at least her fate is less of an immediate execution.
- also YEEEEEEESSSSS ALADOR, CHARACTER DEVELOEPMENT, oh the people who predicted he would turn against Odalia are DANCING right now
- PROTECTIVE WILLOW, FUCK YEAH
- LUZ WAS TAKEN, OH NO. I remember catching luz, teleporting and was a little confused, i love how more eagle eyed viewers would have picked up that it was Hunter was under an illusion and there are more subtle details like “hunter” blowing raspberries at Kikimora seeming very out of character since he would be too scared to goof off.
ANYWAY HORRAY FOR LESBIANS AND fffffFFFFFUCK DISNEY YOU ASSHOLES, I SHALL BEAT THE GHOSTS FROM YOUR STILL TWITCHING CORPSE--

Self Defeating Endings With Grom Factor by MoringMark
A link to the comic's, Grom Factor by Moringmark, beginning.
(If you want to skip the preamble about endings and tragedies, I've bolded the start of the paragraph when I actually start talking about Grom Factor) So I don't like making this. I don't really want to comment too much on fanworks. I have no reason to shit on people who are just celebrating The Owl House. My goal is not to make people despise it, it's to analyze, process my own thoughts, and hopefully teach through sharing those thoughts.
But... I can't talk about tragedies with TOH. The VAST majority of media I consume wouldn't give me the chance and, well... Endings are important. Happy Endings actually happen the most often because they're the most safe. The most gratifying. Everything the characters worked for had the simple point of success and a better future. And, you know, I like that. Their ubiquity though makes them a common point of lazy criticism as people will try to nitpick all the things not fixed or it being so happy because, well, the story had to end eventually. It's why I've never really been like "HoW dO wE aCtUaLlY kNoW tHe IsLeS wIlL bE oKaY!?" I don't care. The show says they're happy because they got rid of the evil guy then fine. It needed to end and at least this means our characters can know peace. The only things I really interrogate about the ending is what it says about those characters and the story that was told because that is part of your ending.
But if you want to claim a more complex story, especially if your story is already ripping off so many elements from a previous one (I'm sorry but Grom Factor is just Grom+Eda's Curse but missing the emotional cores of either because we don't know these characters and there's been no real build up. Not to talk about how ripping off your own series' biggest stories is already going to tank investment), a 'tragic' ending can be a way to do that. A bittersweet ending can be a way to do that. A way to undercut the happy ending everyone expected by instead ripping out their heart.
But you run the risk of making the whole story pointless.
Most people will argue that most tragedies are pointless. Romeo and Juliet is so confident in how pointless the love story is that it tells you the two people die at the end at the BEGINNING. But... It's not. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet sticks with people and is something people want to retell because the tragedy of it all has a point. It talks of the brashness of youth, the collateral damage of endless fury, of how dangerous emotions can be, even the best of them like love. How things can be torn apart and destroyed, futures ended futilely because people will not let go of their emotions or even try to be calm when they have only ever been told to hate. Romeo's passion is both his most attractive quality but also the dooming element that makes sure he kills himself at the end, a trait that Juliet shares and both have from their families who never let people rest. Never allow there to be more than just extreme emotions and so anytime they're emotional, it's big and dangerous.
And so the ending has a point to it. It is the only one that fits the thematics and condemns properly all the damage that was done. That sweet words cannot fix an endless cycle of hate. It is an ending forced by the entire point of the story. Something is only self defeating when there isn't really a theme, core or narrative goal that requires that sort of tragedy. Or, worse yet, when the ending actively undermines all of those elements.
So let's finally talk about Grom Factor. For those who haven't read it, my description earlier is not far off. Luz and Amity's child, Ayzee, causes herself to be named as the next person who will fight Grom. She does this for the most bog standard next gen reason: Wanting to prove herself in contrast to her successful parents. To be her own person and prove that she can be great too. Meanwhile, her girlfriend Milan doesn't want this, partially due to being a healer and following the hypocratic oath, but then commits to helping her girlfriend no matter what. In this process, she gets a part of Philip's journal that shows that Grom is actually a small, scared child. So while Ayzee is preparing to fight Grom, her girlfriend prepares to try to cure Grom.
Big fight ensues, the elixir they bring (yes, just Eda's eliixir, nothing specialized or more complicated) doesn't work and Grom EXPLODES into something more dangerous than ever before. Ayzee and Milan are given a petrification glyph by Amity and Luz after showing Ayzee doesn't have magic of her own, they do a dance to get to the core of Grom to use the glyph... And Milan instead uses Lilith's spell from the end of S1 in order to split the pain of Grom and take the curse onto herself. It works but now anyone who touches Milan gets their fears shouted at them because her hair is now at least partially Grometheus. Then the two leads talk, kiss but we see in Ayzee's head that she is being tortured during the kiss with her fears of inadequacy and the idea that she will always end up hurting other people.
So there you go. A story about one person selfishly throwing themselves in danger without a care about others or the harm she may cause due to her potentially ready for this while the other lead preaches a stop to all harm and even pushes to save a monster because they're in pain too. All the while, the arc tries to sell us on the relationship and how much they theoretically care about each other, especially since this is their first arc together as a couple.
So the actual way to go for a tragic ending, that has similar results to what the comic does, is actually not that hard to see. Ayzee's fears and inadequacies, and her need to prove herself, has HER save Grom while thinking that this will fix her mistake and make her girlfriend happy because she's now taking part of her girlfriends beliefs: To let no one suffer. She could see about someone else taking the pain or not take charge in this situation her flaw, the thing that set all this up for failure which is a component of tragedies. is being unwilling to allow others to do that. To put the burden on herself. So, knowing that killing Grom would hurt someone she cares about by forcing her to take a life, but also needing to do something to set things right, especially as she sees this as her mistake through her original sin of wanting to fight Grom for glory, she sacrifices her happiness to do a selfless act and save the creature. It's bittersweet because of all the curse will do to her but it does actually resolve an arc to the episode and has something to say about how looking for danger for glory is always going to lead to more trouble than you want to have found. It has a POINT.
Instead... Milan's just such a dang good healer! It was so foolish of her to be a good doctor and not want harm upon others. If she had just been like Ayzee and focused more on herself, she might have been willing to let Grom rot and get to have anything resembling a happy life afterwards. Instead, this genuinely just good trait of this good person who did nothing wrong the entire story, means that she will NEVER have relationships again. Not just with Ayzee but ANYONE because she inherently harms people around her by mentally torturing them. By her own character motivations, this means she isn't going to be okay EVER unless this is cured.
But that doesn't track with the reveal of Grom's backstory. Because, you know, that did happen. The story ends so fast after Grom is saved and barely lets her have any time that it's almost easy to forget. But... Grom was made into what she was by cursing herself for the sake of power... To protect others. She was selfless. With it being Milan who saved her, this is meaningless. At best, it's cycles repeating. If Ayzee had, it would have been part of the point the story theoretically sets up for how one needs to do things for others, not for themselves. Instead, I guess the lesson is no good deed goes unpunished? It's not even that personal glory hurts those around you as collateral damage because that's NOT what Grom did.
And finally, there's just the last comic in general that REALLY highlights how little Milan or Grom matters here. She shrugs off the curse. She shrugs off the consequences. Her pain doesn't matter. The only pain that matters is AYZEE'S because this is still her story and NEVER was Milan's. All of this trivializes the tragedy and sacrifice Milan made, as well as the saving of Grom, because those things had nothing to do with the actual focus of the story which doesn't even payoff because the ending shot is making sure we know just how miserable Milan will make Ayzee's life.
THAT is a self defeating ending. The relationship that this arc ostensibly solidifies and sells to the audience? Dead. Ayzee's fears and worries? Made WORSE. Any themes about the need to do what is best for all instead of best for yourself? Falling on the character who already knew that OR saying that doing so always sucks for the person who actually gives a fuck. Any payoff for this? Dismissed so it can only focus on the person SPARED any consequences from her actions except tangentially. And yes, tangentially since Ayzee just needs to get over a teenage crush while Milan will never be a healthy partner to anyone.
The closest you might want to say is that because Ayzee's life did get worse, it sticks to a theme of her brash actions having consequences but then why is the ONLY person to explicitly be harmed by all of this Manila who didn't share that same flaw? At least in Romeo and Juliet, they BOTH die because they BOTH suffer from dangerous levels of brashness and passion. Not many main characters in tragedies get out unscathed for a reason. Usually even if others do get killed during their story, they still suffer just as badly, if not worse.
You can't even go with "Well, at least this version allows Ayzee to be her own person," something that would have been undercut by fusing with a creature" " which is ostensibly part of the point of this sort of next gen arc. To prove they stand alone from what came before... Except no. Ayzee's angst at the end, blaming herself for this, thinking everything she does will always end up hurting others, is literally just Luz's angst arc post Hollow Mind and just about as unreasonable for self hate as her justification. So even that theme, the most basic, number one next gen theme is pointless here, especially since it doesn't even get resolved in any way. The ending, and even the comments recognize this, reinforces that Ayzee is right: People will only ever see her like a little Luz instead of a strong witch herself.
So is there ANY point to this ending? Well... because it's a next gen retelling. Because TOH already did Grom. Already had Luz wanting to prove herself through being Grom Queen. Literally Ayzee's entire arc here is a more blatantly selfish, less interesting version of what her mom did one generation ago. The twist of Grom actually being a good person... *gestures to every character arc in TOH* so that adds literally nothing new, especially since it ends the same way as Eda's curse with the same spell. As such, if it ends happily, and with the couple okay and stronger than before... It literally is just Grom. So you have to give it a tragic ending or else there's no point to this story existing. There's nothing to say except that it's a worse version of the original and why didn't you try to shake things up at all?
It highlights the fact that yeah, this arc is just flawed from a conceptual standpoint which isn't surprising to me. This arc is much of why I made a post a couple days ago about the Isles being an objectively terrible setting for a follow up story. This story is the epitome of everything people dislike about next gen stories, even up to every change they make in a retelling being just worse than the original.
And here's the final nail in the coffin: I will never care about these characters because of this arc but especially because of this ending. We knew almost nothing about Milan before this besides her being Ayzee's girlfriend. Hell, we barely knew anything about AYZEE because we haven't gotten that many comics with her so the only trait that's really been established is that she's a gamer. And yet, in their first outing, a chance to really show who they are and to make them more distinct than Luz and Amity... Well, doing literally anything for your girlfriend and being a damn near saint is just what Amity turned into eventually and I've talked about how much the arc hammered in that Ayzee is literally just Luz all over again. It's a miracle she's not named Buz. Then the ending says screw you to any payoffs or themes for the sake of having ANYTHING to distinguish this from the original and little else. Even the idea that these characters could lead to a fun, silly extension of the show by how absolutely miserable the ending is.
So at this point... Why should I ever bother with these characters again? That seems like a self defeating goal for myself as a viewer.

As a note, this isn't because someone brought it to my attention. I still follow Mark and have since even before his started his final Star Versus comic story. I want to support him, I don't think he's a terrible writer and I like plenty of his comics, but it's rough when he took like two years to finally do a large arc like this again and it's just... not good. And no, I don't like A Hint of Blue either unfortunately but unless I just want to talk about how a boring romance happens, I probably won't ever do a blog like this on that.
I have a public Discord for any and all who want to join!

Biweekly Media Roundup
- Fire Emblem (Game Series) - Admittedly I don’t plan to play Three Hopes as the hoard action game style isn’t my thing, but I am enjoying seeing the new designs for all my fave Three Houses blorbos. Excellent for having a new influx of fanart.
- Star Trek Strange New Worlds (TV) - My dad is a huge Star Trek fan, so we’re watching the new series together. Not too far in but it’s pretty cute so far, the advanced space cult protecting the divine path of a “living” asteroid plotline was a pretty creative one, and the characters at least have potential, though I’d prefer them to just be fully original rather than retreads of TOS.
- Danganronpa 2 (Video Game) - According to my calculations the Grumps playthrough should be finishing up here in the next two or three weeks, so looking forward to that.
- The Owl House (Cartoon) - Caught up just in time for the finale and WOW did the second season outdo the first by a long shot. Not that I thought that season one was bad per say, but it had a habit of being clumsy and meandering. I liked the characters, but I never felt like they were given as interesting things to do as they could have been. Season two fixed that in spades-All the major characters are given interesting lore that has lasting effects into the future plot, the supporting cast actually gets to contribute to the story in interesting ways, Luz and Amity get to be gay as hell and are adorable together, tragic emotional mess sadboi Hunter is here now and I love him dearly, and there’s actual stakes going into the next episode as I genuinely don’t know where they are going to go with it. I’m of course mad at Disney for canceling it prematurely, but kudos to the writing team for managing to keep it engaging given their unexpectedly condensed timeframe.
- Spy X Family (Anime) - Man Anya is so cute, I’m surprised about how invested I am in her school hijinks given the actual espionage happening in the show, but the telepathy aspect combined with her impulsive gung-ho attitude makes her interactions with her classmates just hilarious. Damien seems like he’ll be an entertaining little shit, and I’m looking forward to meeting Yor’s brother.
- Pathologic (Video Game) - Pretty far into Patho 2 now, and while I don’t know if I can say I like it better than Classic, I do think it’s an improvement on the Haruspex’s route overall. You really do connect to the town and its people more, and giving Artemy actual connections and childhood memories beyond what he received in the original is quite nice. I do kind of miss how weirdly nice Daniil and Artemy’s conversations were in classic, but admittedly their dialogue here is a lot more snappy and entertaining overall-Daniil’s just such a little prick and Artemy is having none of it. To be fair it’s not like they retconned Haruspex route Daniil to hate Artemy or anything, he still seem to quite like him, he’s just mean about it now which I for one find hilarious. Artemy’s individual dialogue is also pretty entertaining, most of the time it’s pretty relatable “I’m exhausted and over this shit” type of stuff but every so often he just pulls out these insane lines like “I’m somewhat of a kitten myself” or “Normally people call me ‘Help, I’m Dying’”, like what??? Artemy what are you doing man?? I love it.
- Schitt’s Creek (TV) - Starting to get actually attached to these characters at this point-David’s budding romance with his is business partner is quite wholesome, I’m really loving all Alexis’s looks, and the Stevie/Mr Rose dynamic is a fun addition.
- Return of the Obra Dinn (Video Game) - Finished, and what a game it was! It really can only be played once due to it’s single puzzle nature, but it was definitely worth that single playthrough, with a truly unique aesthetic, memorable music, great creature design, and an interesting puzzle that is just difficult enough to make you feel smart for solving it. If your the type that likes escape rooms or just puzzles in general, I’d 100% recommend this is was a blast.
- Dracula (Original Novel) - Good the cowboy has arrived.
