FAQ:
What is MCYTBLR AU Fest? MCYTBLR AU Fest is a reverse minibang-type event where writers and artists come together to create fanworks centred on MCYT and set in an alternate universe from canon.
How does it work? Artists will have a month to complete an art piece. After a month, once the art is complete, they will submit the art, with information about server, characters, relationships, and any warnings they are opting into, which will be posted anonymously for writers to view and claim, first-come-first-serve. Teams are assigned by mods, and then writers will have two months of creation time to make a pice inspired by the work (minimum 5k words).
What type of MCYT is included? We welcome creations based on any SMP, whether or not they have a canon tag on Ao3. Mianite, DSMP, QSMP, Hermitcraft, 3rd Life, Lifesteal, Witchcraft SMP— it’s all welcome.
Can I join if my Art is a Game/Web Weave? We welcome all types of art— web weave, game, traditional art, original songs, videos, etc. While the list is not exhaustive, we have outlined some of the baseline expectations for an art piece below.
What are the requirements for art? It is difficult to define precise expectations for art pieces, especially given the broad realm of things that could count as art. We are primarily looking for art that is complete to a level that you would normally post as "finished", ready to inspire a fic piece of 5k or more, containing an audio or visual component beyond the confines of the written word, that does not take more than an hour to consume. While you will have the opportunity to include your understanding of the world in things such as if the relationships depicted are romantic or not, the art piece must stand alone without explanatory text or extra worldbuilding.
The defined requirements for different forms of art are:
Digital or Traditional art: one piece, completed to whatever you would normally post as "finished", ready to inspire a fanfic.
Web Weaves: a web weave of at least ten elements, original or properly credited.
Video/animatic: a video at least 30 seconds long.
Other Art Form: other art forms such as fan games or original songs would fall under this category. If you wanted to sign up with an Other art form, you need to contact the mod team and work out what minimum expectations would be for your art.
Is shipping allowed? Yes. Because there is no broad fandom-wide consensus about how Creator boundaries are to be enforced in specific cases (whether it's okay to write beeduo as /r or /p is an obvious one, or whether it’s permitted to ship Joel Smallishbeans) or between specific fandoms (Lifesteal approach to shipping and boundaries is different from HBG is different from DSMP), the mods will not be policing any specific understanding of boundaries across the event. The event's motivating ethos is Don't Like Don't Read, in that artists will be able to specify for themselves if a given relationship is to be interpreted as romantic or platonic, and writers will choose to opt into that, and NSFW will have to be specifically opted into on both sides.
Is NSFW allowed? Yes. NSFW works are allowed, but must be opted into, both in terms of viewing art and in terms of creating fic. No one under 18 is permitted to opt into NSFW and attempts to do so will be grounds for a ban from this event and anywhere else the mod team touches. For the comfort of the greatest number of participants, and to conform with Tumblr TOS, anything with the tags Underage or Incest will not be permitted to be part of the event.
Are major archive warnings (noncon/graphic depictions of violence/MCD) allowed? Aside from the content rules governing NSFW (no underage or incest, for the comfort of the greatest number of participants), major archive warnings are allowed. Depictions of real life horrors such as genocide and slavery are not-uncommon motifs in MCYT fics, and the mod team is not interested in legislating which types of horrors, griefs or abuses are inherently worse than others and are therefore off-limits. Because holding writing to a quality standard or saying only survivors can write atrocities is unworkable from a moderation standpoint, the three mentioned major archive warnings (MCD, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Noncon), are permitted to be included.
However, Major Archive Warnings must be explicitly opted into by the artist, and writers are free to not include Major Archive Warnings that their artist has permitted. Delivering un-asked for major archive warnings is grounds for a ban from this event. The mod team reserves the right to warn other mod teams on both the MCYT and Multi-fandom side about your bad behaviour.
What kind of an information will I provide as an Artist? How long or detailed? Artists will be able to specify
the server their art takes place on
the characters in the work
whether the relationships in the work are romantic, platonic, or could be interpreted either way
if they are okay with NSFW work
what age group of people they are okay working with
the type of AU it is
any content warnings present in the work already (i.e. gore, eyestrain, child death)
if the work is nsfw
any major archive warnings they are okay with happening in the story
common fandom themes and/or triggering content that they are okay with happening in the story.
A DNW
What sort of fandom themes will I specify? While this will not be an exhaustive list of every possible triggering concept, the mods want artists to be able to specify if they are okay with dynamics that circulate in the fandom that may be triggering or people simply may have strong opinions on, and for writers to be able to sort by that. Some of the themes include domestic abuse, alcoholism, family dynamics, pregnancy, dubcon, torture, body horror, dehumanization, child death, non-consensual touching, drugging, etc.
What is a DNW?
Artists will have the opportunity to fill out a DNW, which stands for Do Not Want. This is anything that has the potential to ruin a fic for you, and is where you opt out of content that would trigger, squick, or just render the gift unreadable for you. DNWs must be phrased politely, (so no "No foster aus because they suck and you suck if you like them"), and they must be reasonable, (so no "no blood/injury" if the art depicted shows injury, and no attempting to box someone into a specific gift beyond what is depicted in the art, so no "dnw anything that isn't a modern au where scar is a theatre teacher and grian is a biology teacher and they live in a city named hermitopia and grian has a situationship with mumbo and scarian has a rivalry at a coffee shop for the half-price muffins and jellie has psychic powers she's manipulating the muffin market with" if that is not clear from the art), and they must be specific and clear, (so no “no triggering content"), but they can be as petty (disliking 1st person) or as broad-reaching (no modern aus, no specific ships not depicted, no crossovers with specific servers or fics) as you like. Deliberately breaking someone's DNW is grounds for a ban from the exchange.
Is Dark/Violent content allowed? As long as it is something that the artist has not opted out of, yes. For many of us, the source material that originally drew us to the fandom includes major character death, torture, murder-for-hire, death games, public executions and more. The fanfiction that arose from the source material follows in that trend. We will allow dark content to be part of the event, but it must be tagged for.
We also ask that participants use best judgement in delivering commonly triggering topics un-asked for. We reserve the right to ban people at mod's discretion for delivering unrequested triggering content, under the "do not be an asshole" rule.
Moreover, if your fic is rated E for any reason, (including violence or gore) your entire team must be 18+
How can I get involved? You can participate in this event as a:
Author
Artist
Pinch Hitter
Beta Reader
You can even sign up for multiple roles, as long as you’re very sure you can make your deadlines!
What is a Pinch Hitter? A pinch hitter is a person who saves the day and steps in when the original creator is unable to deliver their work for whatever reason, making a new work on an accelerated timeline. You must reach the minimum word count of 5k. .
When do I have to join the discord? You have the option to join the dicord and hang out as soon as creation starts on May 4, and if you are an artist, you must join before sign-ups close on May 31. If you are a writer, you must join the discord before claims begin on June 1st. If you are a Beta Reader, we'd ask that you join before claims begin on June 9th.
How does team assignment/claims work? We will release a document with all the art pieces linked in it, and 24 hours afterwards we will release a sign-up form. Writers will be expected to list out out a top-five of artists they want to work with, and mods will match writers with art on a first-come-first-served basis.
How does Beta Reader assignment work? Shortly after writer sign-ups end, writers who wish to sign up for Beta Readers will be able to do so. In a similar way to how writers claimed art, beta readers will be given a list of summaries and then, 24 hours later, will be able to submit a short list of fics they want to help work on. Beta readers will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
What happens if there are more artists than authors, or more authors than artists? If there are more writers, some artists will be assigned multiple writers. If there are more artists, we will put in place a question where writers can specify that they’d be willing to make multiple pieces, and a (hopefully small) number of writers would be assigned multiple teams.
What if all the artists I list have already been assigned? If every artist you wish to opt into has already been assigned, mods will contact you and ask if you wish to be matched to people who have not yet been claimed. You will then be able to choose if you wish to claim other teams, or wait and hope that there will be more writers than artists, and multiple writers on a team will be opened up. If that happens, you can re-submit your list and be assigned as a writer to one of your original artists.
I’m in [insert time zone here]. What if I’m not awake when claims open? There will be a spot to input your time zone in the discord. Mods will try to open the claims at a time that works for as many writers as possible. The art pieces will also be available for 24 hours before claims so that everyone can view them and pick out the ones that are the most interesting to them. We will aim for claims to open between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m. for as many writers as possible across all time zones. If claims fall outside that zone for you, you’ll be able to contact a mod and we’ll work out an alternative method for claims for you.
I don’t know what time zone I’m in? Go to timeanddate.com and enter the nearest major city, and it will tell you your current time zone.
What’s a check-in and how do they work? Check-ins are there to make sure everyone is on track to finish their piece in time, and to communicate any issues with the mods! If you know that you won’t be able to check in on a specific date (lack of internet, etc), please contact the mods in advance.
How long should my fic be? The minimum word count is 5,000 words! There is no maximum word count, but we ask you to be mindful of how much you can actually create in these two months.
If I wrote a multi-chapter work, do I have to have it all posted by the end of Posting Period? You must post your work in its entirety by the end of the two-week posting period.
What does AU mean in this context? AU stands for Alternate Universe and in this case means anything that would make the work not able to be tagged as canon compliant. Alternate endings, role reversals, complete setting or plot swaps, and crossovers all count. As this is a fest specifically to celebrate AUs, we ask that the AU be a significant and celebrated part of the work, not something that could be skipped if you aren’t paying attention.
Can I create two fics for my artist? Absolutely! There is no maximum for number of fics you want to create, but again, be mindful of not biting off more than you can chew two months of creation time.
Can I sign up with two pieces of art? You are welcome to sign up as part of the fest with multiple art pieces. However, if you do so, we will ask that you prioritize which art piece you want to be matched on first, and you will only receive a match to your secondary art piece after everyone else has an writer. We’re going to proritize every particpant getting a team before we prioritize every art piece getting a team.
Can I sign up with a multi-piece art piece? If you want to sign up with a web weave that features multiple panels, a long video, a long comic, a series of connected art pieces, a song cycle, or any other more complex/more ornate work, you are welcome to. We just ask that you make sure you can complete your art piece during the month of artist creation time, and keep in mind that if your piece is sufficiently complex, that might restrict the writers who are able to sign up for your piece. But if you think you can pull it off, then go for it.
Can I sign up with a writing buddy— as part of a collab team? You are welcome to sign up as a collaborative team, either an art team or a writing team! We ask that you make sure you work together well, and when you sign up for an team, you must declare that you’re a duo, so people know that they’ll be getting multiple team members and not one.
Can I submit an art piece that is part of a larger AU? All art pieces must stand alone, so you can't have it that your writer has to consider other art pieces to make a work. The art must also be made specifically for the event. We ask that you not submit an art piece that was made prior to the event, or one that is part of an au you've posted about so often that it will effectively de-anon you. Brainstorming or sketching early is fine.
Once my art piece is done, when can I post it? Art and fic should be posted together, during the Posting Period at the beginning of August. Once you have your art done, you'll have to hold onto it for another two months, while your writer is working.
What if I need to drop out? It is your responsibility to communicate with us if you need to drop out of the event for any reason, and we do need that communication. We know that life is no respecter of fic and art deadlines, so no hard feelings if something happens. However, we would hate for any artist to end up having no fic for their art, so please think about this if you are thinking of dropping out close to reveals. Dropping out after the last check-in without informing the mods will result in not being permitted to take part in further events run by this mod team.
I have a question not answered here? Send us an ask on tumblr, contact @antimony-medusa on tumblr or discord!

Mourning Technoblade: Fans Grieve a Minecraft Star They Never Met
The expert gamer built a following of millions of mostly young players on YouTube, without revealing his name or face.
Late last month, more than 10.4 million subscribers to a YouTube channel received a notification that usually brought good news: Technoblade, an expert Minecraft player, had posted a new video.
For fans, each new video held the promise of Technoblade’s warm humor, whether he was winning a tournament or going on an inexplicable quest to produce more potatoes than anyone else in a Minecraft minigame.
But when fans clicked play on this latest video, called “so long nerds,” it was immediately obvious something was wrong. Instead of showing Minecraft gameplay, a man identifying himself as Technoblade’s father appeared. He announced that his son, whose first name was Alex, had died after being diagnosed with cancer.
The video has been viewed more than 72.9 million times since it was published on June 30 as the fans who used to look forward to Technoblade’s notifications try to process the death of someone they have known only through a screen.
Social media is flooded with fan art, tributes and links to grief resources. Memorials have been erected within Minecraft, including a digital book that had been signed by more than 377,000 people.
The grief has ricocheted offline, including into the home of Noelle, 13, and her sister Ilana, 11, who had recently told their aunt to name her baby Technoblade.
In a video call from their home near Toronto, Noelle said she learned that Alex had died on her last day of school.
“I was just a mess,” she said. “I was just sitting in my room crying. I didn’t know what to do.”
Ilana, who dressed up as Technoblade’s avatar, a pig in a crown, for Halloween, said, “I don’t like to bring up the topic when I am just sitting with others.”
They both started watching Alex’s videos in late 2020. They liked his lighthearted banter with other Minecraft players and how he would monologue about the absurdity of routine parts of life, like using, and losing, a box to carry soap to a communal shower in college.
Coping With Grief and Loss
Living through the loss of a loved one is a universal experience. But the ways in which we experience and deal with the pain can largely differ.
What Experts Say: Psychotherapists say that grief is not a problem to be solved, but a process to be lived through, in whatever form it may take.
How to Help: Experiencing a sudden loss can be particularly traumatic. Here are some ways to offer your support to someone grieving.
A New Diagnosis: Prolonged grief disorder, a new entry in the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual, applies to those who continue to struggle long after a loss.
The Biology of Grief: Grief isn’t only a psychological experience. It can affect the body too, but much about the effects remains a mystery.
Alex spoke over screen recordings of himself playing Minecraft, the immensely popular video game developed by Mojang Studios in which players can create their own world piece by piece and compete against others online. The game developer was later bought by Microsoft.
The guided gameplay had garnered such a following that the company made a tribute to Technoblade on its launch page after he died. Mojang Studios said Technoblade “became synonymous with a source of good” in an emailed statement.
Among Technoblade’s most beloved game adventures was his whimsical quest to make more potatoes than anyone else in Minecraft, a feat first documented in The Great Potato War video, which had 35.8 million views.
In the video, Alex makes several references to Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” as he tries to topple the top potato producer at the time, a player who uses the moniker im_a_squid_kid. After Technoblade sees that his competition has created a rendering of the Mona Lisa in his Minecraft lair, he declares that im_a_squid_kid is not just “a potato madman, but a potato supervillain.”
youtube
Shielding an offline identity
In Alex’s videos, he talked about going to college (and dropping out to play Minecraft full time) and made occasional references to his family, but there was a clear boundary between Alex, the son and brother, and Technoblade. His family has sought to maintain that privacy since his death and declined to be interviewed.
Alex announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer in an August 2021 video threaded with jokes in which he also mentioned that he was 22 at the time. He did not specify what type of cancer he had, but his followers assumed that he had sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that is found in bone and soft tissues, because he created a fund-raiser for the Sarcoma Foundation of America on his YouTube page. He had raised more than $500,000 for the organization before the “so long nerds” video was published.
The foundation, which created a special donation page for Technoblade, said that an estimated 17,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with sarcoma in 2022, and more than 7,200 people will die from the disease.
After Alex died, his fans encouraged eligible people to donate blood to help cancer patients.
Riley, a 21-year-old in Connecticut, routinely donates blood in honor of a friend who died of sarcoma, and she made her most recent donation in Technoblade’s honor. She said his death was all the more difficult because of her earlier loss. “I was bawling like a baby for a couple hours,” she said. (Riley spoke on the condition that her last name not be used because she has faced online harassment.)
She has played Minecraft for about 10 years, but she did not discover Technoblade until the early days of the pandemic when she was working grueling shifts at a grocery store. “There was not a lot of joy in my life being an essential worker,” she said.
She liked Technoblade’s humor and introduced his videos to some of her co-workers, who were reminded of his famous potato war at work. “We were stocking potatoes one night and we just started laughing,” she said.
Technoblade inspired Riley to start broadcasting videos of herself playing video games, or streaming, under the name Notable_Crayon. It has been a great way to unwind, she said, but it has also shown her why someone as popular as Technoblade would protect his offline identity.
Occasionally people will figure out Riley’s full name and send her “creepy” messages, she said. She also has a friend who was the victim of swatting, false reports of crimes in progress intended to draw armed police to the victim’s home. Her friend was not hurt, but others have been harmed, with one man killed by the police and another dying of a heart attack.
In the “so long nerds” video, Alex’s father read a letter that he said his son wrote about eight hours before he died. In the letter, Alex acknowledged the consequences of sharing personal information online and revealed that he and a sibling had successfully convinced online fans that his first name was Dave by using the name in a 2016 video, which was later deleted.
Alex said the prank resulted in “thousands of creepy online dudes trying to get overly personal, going, ‘Oh hey, Dave, how’s it going?’”
Navigating the loss of an online friend
For some fans, the mystery of Alex’s identity has added a confusing layer to the muddle of grief.
Richard England, a vicar at Crofton Parish on the south coast of Britain, said that his teenagers were both devastated by Alex’s death and that they had a few conversations about how not knowing Technoblade’s offline identity affected their grieving.
“Through this new online, offline world we have, many of them will feel like they will know Technoblade and other members of those online communities better than they know kids in their own school,” Mr. England, 47, said. “They will have spent just as much time with them.”
In Canada, Noelle and Ilana’s mother, Janice, admitted she was skeptical at first about the idea that you could have fun watching videos of someone else playing video games. But she said the girls had educated her about the Minecraft world and its personalities, which she now appreciates.
Janice, 52, was well suited to handle her children’s grief about Technoblade because she said she previously worked with children in grief as a child life specialist, a role that helps children and families cope with stress they experience because of health problems, hospitalization and bereavement.
She said that adults tend to want to protect children from uncomfortable feelings, but that it was important to give them space to express, or not express, how they were feeling about Technoblade.
“If we help our children through grief when they experience it,” she said, “then they will be better able to cope with it when they are older and have other situations in their lives that would cause them to be grieving.”
In the video call with her daughters, Janice said her sister in Maryland had called after Technoblade died, because her son was also a big fan. The boy had decided to raise money for the sarcoma foundation, Janice said, prompting Ilana to turn toward her mother and ask: “Is there a way I can help him with that?”

What is a zine?
A fanzine is a collaboratively-published magazine of fanworks. It can include art, writing, and many other kinds of creative work.
What is this zine about?
Tea, Toast & Ghosts is a character- and ship-neutral celebration of the Lockwood & Co fandom, meaning you can submit both gen and ship-related ideas. It is also open to both book and show canon, meaning there will be spoilers for show-only fans.
This issue’s theme will be:
“What’s your favorite part of Lockwood & Co.?” with a twist. We challenge you to frame your piece as something you might see in one of the gossip magazines Lockwood loves to read in his free time.
What will the format of this zine be in?
This zine will be made available as a free digital PDF, set in single-page, portrait A4 pages. We will also have a text-only accessible version made available for blind and low-vision fans.
What will be the rating for this zine?
This zine will be SFW, and will allow submissions rated from G up to PG-13.
Where can I apply?
Applications are open until 21st August. Our schedule can be found here.
We ask that you include three proposals for your piece in your application, so that we can see how well it goes with the zine concept, and to make sure there aren’t too many of the same ideas among different contributors. We will confirm the idea proposals with applicants only after they have been accepted as a zine contributor so these do not need to be final.
Who can apply?
Anyone interested, regardless of previous experience in zines or other related projects, may apply as a contributor.
A detailed list of eligibility requirements can be found in our Contributor Guidelines.
All applicants will be expected to include a working link to their portfolio (art account, writing account, or other examples of your work), so we can have a better understanding of who they are and what they may create for the zine.
Can I submit something I’ve already started working on or finished as part of my idea proposals?
Yes, so long as it is something you haven’t posted or shared publicly already. However, we recommend that you tailor your proposals so that they fit our concept and theme for this zine. New and unfinished works will be given priority.
I have only read the Lockwood & Co books / only watched the TV series. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can. However, we expect that there will be spoilers for both the books and show in the zine. We recommend that you complete both series before applying.
What are contributors expected to create?
We will be accepting several different forms of original, fannish work. A non-exhaustive list of examples can be found in the Contributor Guidelines.
Are all Lockwood & Co characters allowed?
Yes! We welcome both book and show interpretations of any Lockwood & Co characters.
Are collaborations allowed?
Yes! The zine is open to collaborations, but between confirmed contributors only. Collaborators will be expected to communicate well amongst themselves so they can deliver their zine pieces on time.
An individual contributor may also create a multi-media piece that involves both writing and artistic aspects.
Any content that is strictly prohibited?
Content may be evaluated and rejected on a case-by-case basis by the mod team. The following are not allowed:
AI-generated content (Whether fully or partially; this applies to both artwork and writing.)
RPF (Real Person/People Fiction)
Original Character-centric pieces. This zine is first and foremost a celebration of the existing characters we all know and love. Inclusion of OCs can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
Alternate Universe pieces (such as royalty AUs or spy AUs). This zine is set in The Problem-era England.
For further information, see the Contributor Guidelines.
I am taking part in the 2023 Lockwood & Co. Big Bang. Can I still participate in this zine?
We would love to have you! Please keep in mind that both the Lockwood & Co. Big Bang and this zine require a time commitment of several months where you will be expected to manage your own schedule, communicate with mods, and meet deadlines promptly.
While both events are centered around the same fandom, you will be expected to create a separate and unique piece for this zine.
I have an unanswered question. How can I contact you?
You can email us at [email protected], or send us an ask here on Tumblr. More information can be found on our Contact Us page.

Meet the Creators - Curseofroses
What username(s) and platform(s) can folx find you on? (Please include links!)
@curseofroses is my Sailor Moon sideblog! (Link to AO3 )
You can find me on @andrastesgrace for my main blog, which is mostly Marvel related things and various other interests.
I am on Twitch , Tiktok, Twitter, Instagram
(Fun Fact) What is your favorite kind of potato?
Tater tots!
How long have you been creating works in fandom spaces? How long have you been active in the SM fandom?
Oh gosh. I've been writing fanfic since 1999, so 23 years? And been active on and off in the SM fandom for that entire time.
What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)
I usually write fanfic and make cosplay, although I'm trying to learn digital art!
What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?
UsaMamo was my very first OTP. It's like the comfort food of fandoms
Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?
In Sailor Moon, just UsaMamo! But outside SM I write a lot of different ones for Marvel - mostly Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers and Thor/Sif. There's also an entire expanded universe called Family Assembled that my best friend and I have been working on for almost a decade now, and it contains a TON of Marvel pairings along with some OC pairings that I'm really fond of.
I've also been in Star Wars for as long as I've been in Sailor Moon, and create stories for Luke Skywalker/Mara Jade and Anakin/Padme.
What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?
As a person with ADHD, I really, really relate to Usagi and how she messes up a lot, but loves all her friends so much, and I love how much he believes in her. It can be hard, when you're the person who is always messing up, to find that kind of support.
Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?
Oh I'm an ADHD disaster so I have like ten documents going at all times. I wrote like 30% of eight UsaMamo fics last year that are just sitting in my drive. There are some docs with only one or two sentences. I'm a menace.
Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?
I LIKE large projects, I am abysmal at finishing them. That's why I only have two current Sailor Moon fics - those are the ones I was able to finish and polish. I don't like posting things before they're finished, so one shots tend to make it out more often, but I have a ton of IDEAS for chaptered fics.
Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?
It's not terribly evident in my current published Sailor Moon works, but I tend to write situations where Usagi's family finds out she is Sailor Moon a whole lot? Those are the chaptered ones that never see the light of day because I can't figure out how they should go, but they always have her two worlds colliding. There's probably something in there my therapist would have a field day with.
I also just adore Chibiusa to pieces, so she makes it into a lot of my fics.
Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?
Hmmm, as I said earlier, I'm trying to learn how to do digital art. I'd really like to get passably decent at that, because I feel like some of the ~dramatic~ situations in my head would be better served through art than words.
Oh! Re: cosplay, I'd love to do an armor build of some kind. Most of my cosplays are gowns or dresses (I did Princess Serenity last year!) and I'd like to try my hand at maybe Commander Shepard from Mass Effect or Lady Sif from Thor: The Dark World.

Today we're delighted to hear from @rdshirt, a longtime Sanvers fan and 2022 Big Bang artist. She'll talk about the importance of finishing things, and why, as she puts it in the intro to her A03 piece, we should all "sign up for the scary stuff."
Thanks, Redshirt!
Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been creating fan art? What were some of your first subjects and what ships/characters in the SG universe have you illustrated?
I never did any fan art until I signed up for the Sanvers Big Bang. That was the first time I had ever made humans that managed to actually resemble the humans they were supposed to be. (Know that meme where the horse starts out great on one end and looks like a toddler drew the other end? Well…all the drawings in the figure art class I took all remained headless for a reason.) It was exciting to learn the new skills and have it finally click for me.
What are your favorite mediums to work with?
Since I was young I’ve been an oil painter. Though I did have a long hiatus from that, because I promised someone a painting and when I didn’t deliver I felt too guilty to paint anything else. Good news, I’m back painting again. (Y’all I had to finish that painting before the person died and I felt guilty for the rest of my life.)
For the fan art, I’m using Procreate to make digital artwork. I like it for this, because I can play around and change things easily.
What kinds of scenes do you enjoy illustrating? Do you have any favorite tropes or themes? Imagery that you like to work with?
I enjoyed the ranch scenery of my Big Bang. I’m comfortable with landscape and it allowed me to ease in to (*cough* procrastinate *cough*) the portrait part that I was nervous about. I’m excited about the imagery in my Finish-the-Fic match. It is very visual and there are a lot of things for me to play with.
Any advice for aspiring fan artists?
Do it. Do it because you want to and it makes you happy. Even if you’re scared. Even if you don’t think you’re “good enough”. You’re always going to see all the flaws in your own work. But I guarantee 99% of other folks seeing it are just going to be excited because there is fan art of the thing they also love. (And don’t worry about that other 1%, what they think doesn’t matter.)
Do you have a gallery of online work you’d like to post a link to?
I don’t have a gallery, but the Big Bang I did the art for is The Long Way by jkbtseriously (JessAnn), maybe go give that a read if you haven’t  https://archiveofourown.org/works/43060836/chapters/108205251

2023 Reading Log, pt 2
Tumblr media
006. Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films by Nina Nesseth. This book is about how and why people feel fear, incorporating ideas from neuroscience and psychology, it talks about what happens in the brain when someone is afraid, why a horror movie might be scarier when you’re going to bed at night then when you’re actually watching it, and a very good discussion of the controversies about whether exposure to media violence actually desensitizes people or makes them more likely to commit violence themselves. The authorial voice is fun, like a friend who has learned all this cool stuff and wants you to know about it. And the author is a married lesbian and brings her wife up very casually (her wife is terrified of ET, for example), which is always a plus in my book.
Tumblr media
007. Heist by Pete Stegemeyer. This is another “podcast adapted into a book” that I didn’t know was based on a podcast. I Can Steal That!, specifically. The heists are classified into loose categories—ones involving unusual transportation, bank jobs, art theft, digital crimes, unusual items stolen. There’s some stories in here I knew; the James-Younger gang is mentioned twice, and the theft of the Mona Lisa is one of the art pieces mentioned. But a lot of it is new to me. The stories are told in a breezy way, but sometimes a little out of order: the organization of the book makes for some odd choices and reveals, maybe as a consequence of its origins in an audio medium. There are illustrations throughout by Rebecca Pry, in a style that is pretty distinctive. Objects are detailed and realistic, but people are cartoony.
Tumblr media
008. Folk Tales of the Maldives by Xavier Romero-Frias. The Maldives are a country that I knew very little about before reading this. They’re an island nation in the Indian Ocean, with a majority Muslim population and cultural ties to Arabia and India. There’s a lengthy prologue about Maldivian culture, which bemoans that their unique traditions are being altered or erased by cultural assimilation. There are eighty stories in the book, ranging from overtly supernatural tales of magic and monsters, to animal fables of the kind found almost universally, to folk history of fairly recent events. Like WWII and the first tourist to bring a scuba tank to the island, level of recent. The author also illustrates some of the stories in an amateurish but charming pencil style.
Tumblr media
009. The Lion Boy and Other Medical Curiosities by Jan Bondeson. I am torn on this book. I read it all the way through, but found it a somewhat unpleasant experience. The content is good: it alternates between biographies and possible diagnoses for various “human oddities” from the 18th through early 20th centuries and more general medical weirdness from that time. Like doctors debating how long a severed head retained consciousness and whether or not someone’ hair could literally go white from fear. A lot of the material is gleaned from primary sources—newspaper accounts and medical journal articles. What’s bad about the book is the authorial voice. He’s remarkably judgmental about people’s physical appearance (human oddity or not), very fatphobic and even manages to slip in a racist joke! He comes across as a huge asshole, is what I’m saying. I wish this book had been written by someone more humane and respectful, like a Ricky Jay type.
Tumblr media
010. Forces of Habit: Drugs and the Making of the Modern World by David T. Courtwright. This book is about the history of drug use, the development of global capitalism, and how tightly the two are linked. It first discusses what the author deems are the most important drugs: caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, opiates, cocaine, cannabis. It then talks about the role that doctors and medicine play in promoting drugs, debates why some plant products became major international drugs and others didn’t, and discusses why total prohibition is a fool’s errand. The book was written in 2000, but still feels fresh and relevant—concepts like the ladder of technological development of drugs from raw plant product to fully synthetic analogues is relevant to the rise of vaping, and the section about how amphetamines were first promoted, then demonized by doctors could be an account of the opiod epidemic. Highly recommended.

The Dragon Prince Big Bang Challenge FAQ
The Dragon Prince fandom's very own Big Bang Challenge! Spanning several months and open to all in The Dragon Prince fandom, this Big Bang was created to create new fan works for our fandom.
How does it work?
Authors sign up to complete 10,000 word fanfics within 3 months. This can include any pairing or be a non-ship general fic. Alternate universes, crossovers, and original characters are welcome as long as the canon characters play a dominant role in the fanfic.
Artists sign up to complete at least one piece of art for their assigned fanfic. Fanfics will be assigned by a blind selection of summaries. Fanart can be any kind of medium, from playlists to baking, voice over to digital art, we want it all.
Beta readers sign up to assist authors and artists with an extra eye to check for mistakes and bounce ideas.
A theme will be announced to help jog ideas, but authors and artists can be as loose with this theme's interpretation as they choose.
Is there a prize for completing these works by the deadline?
Big Bangs are not a competition, but rather an event that creates new works for the fandom to enjoy as a whole and to facilitate community bonding. If nothing else, you can be proud of the work you put in!
What if I don't finish my work by the deadline?
We understand that the Big Bang is a big undertaking, and some participants may not be able to complete the challenge. While it may not make it to the masterlist, you at least have a good start on a new piece to complete at a later time. Maybe even during next year's event!
Do I have to create something new?
The short answer is yes. The goal of the Big Bang is to create new, complete works to share with the fandom. Provided that your work has not been shared publicly, it qualifies for the Big Bang.
Where do I post my Big Bang work?
You can post wherever you like! ArchiveOfOurOwn, Fanfiction.net, tumblr, Instagram, you can even crosspost to various platforms if you'd like. Just make sure you send your links to the mods so that your work can be included in the masterlist.
What if no artist picks my fanfiction?
Not to worry, every fanfiction will receive at least one piece of art. In fact, if there are more authors than artists (or artists who would like to take on more than one fanfiction), there will be a second claim process.
May I collaborate with another author/artist?
Yes! Authors may choose to co-write their fanfiction and artists may choose to work together on their artwork. However you must sign up as a collaboration at the start. You may not choose to collaborate with another author/artist once sign ups have closed. Co-authors will also be required to submit 15k words and co-artists will be required to submit 2 pieces of art at the end of the deadline.
How does the artist claim process work?
At the first check-in, authors will be required to submit summaries to the mods. Artists will have access to this list of summaries and will submit their list of the top 5 summaries they would like to partner with. Stories will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis. Then author/artist partnerships will be announced and it's time to collaborate!
How do you keep the claims a blind selection?
Mostly it comes down to authors keeping their work a secret until their partnerships are announced. We want to make sure that the Big Bang does not end up a popularity contest, so keep your secrets until your partnerships, then feel free to share your work with your partner!
Can I sign up to write, do art, AND beta read?
You can sign up for all the things if you'd like! Just be sure to sign up in each individual form. Keep in mind that completing this challenge can be tough, and the more you add to your plate the tougher it will become. But if you think you can handle it all, go go go!
What timezone are the deadlines scheduled in?
Everything on the schedule is set in Eastern Standard Time. If you aren't great with timezones, remember that it's the same timezone New York City is in.

Good morning!!
Firstly, I’m honored by everyone who’s still here. I never expected to meet so many warm people during one of my lowest points.
I really mean it when I say you all rescued me at my loneliest.
For the last few years, I’ve been preparing to launch a web comic. I’m finally at the point where I have enough to comfortably launch with months of content already prepared.
Elemental Soup has been my passion project since I was in university. I grew up on magical girls and martial arts movies. I always wanted to see a cast of kick ass women.
So I made it!
I’m going to launch in less than ten days on WEBTOON Canvas and I had to tell you all first.
If you like my art style, character development and want to see a lot of physical comedy, I’d love for you to check it out. It’ll be the majority of my internet presence for years to come.
We have less than ten days to October 18th. The website isn’t ready yet, but I grabbed a lot of urls on different social media sites and a cool website name (yo elementalsoup.gay is like, perfect.) Those will have side content because I haven’t been able to stop drawing for the last two years.
I’m still new to digital art to be completely honest, but I’m already seeing a quick increase in skill just from hitting the tablet so often.
My color artist is the love of my life that I met through the Undertale fandom and moved back to my home country to be with (I gotta tell y’all about it sometime, us nerds are engaged!)
So…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please come hang out with me again if you’re interested!
The countdown will end with the first three pages and will be updated twice every week unless I get excited and do extra ones.
I’m on tumblr (linked above), Twitter and even insta while I finish up a few more big art pieces for the actual website.
Ask me any questions you want in the meantime, but as you know.
I like to keep spoilers and suspense closely to my chest ;)

🫡 That's it for the F1 Big Bang 2022! 📚
It’s been a long few months, huh? Thanks so much to everyone for sticking around! Details and links to most works can be found in the previous promo posts, with a handful more on Ao3 by creators who didn’t wish to advertise here. All of the fics and art are amazing, so please continue to show the creators your appreciation with ❤️ kudoses, 💬 comments, and 🔁 reblogs.
The Numbers
As requested, some fun trends and stats. 🤓
A total of 74 writers (63 priority, 11 late) and 26 artists (18 priority, 8 late) initially signed up
A total of 23 proposals were accepted and claimed, with one additional writer/author team working together from the beginning - all but one (🙈) of those made it to the end
Total Word Count: 666,546 (🤯 the minimum was 10k!?!)
Total Image Count: 59
All art produced was some form of visual medium - digital or traditional drawing/painting, comic, gifset, or epistolary edit
There was a trick question on the signup form to see who actually read all the instructions - 50% of writers and 54% of artists got it right 😭
Top 3 Relationships: Lewis Hamilton/Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton/Nico Rosberg and Charles Leclerc/Sebastian Vettel (tie), Pierre Gasly/Charles Leclerc
Top 3 Fic Characters: Sebastian Vettel, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly and Lewis Hamilton (tie)
Top 3 Art Characters: Sebastian Vettel, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen (3-way tie)
The most common fic rating was Explicit, while the most common art rating was General Audiences
There were 3 pieces set in canon, 1 future fic, and 19 alternate universe stories 🤔
A Request
Now that everyone’s had a little time to breathe (but things are still hopefully fresh on your mind), I’d be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to share how the experience went for you, no matter how you participated (or didn't!).
✨T🖤H🤎A❤️N🧡K💛Y💚O💙U💜!✨
Finally, and most importantly, several acknowledgements are in order:
To all of the writers and artists, whether you finished or not. I hope it was at least half as fun as it was stressful. 😅
To the readers and cheerleaders for the invaluable ongoing encouragement. 🎇
To my beloved Discord mods - rhu, K, and Shiwi - who were witness to copious amounts of flailing and failing. The server would not be possible without you. 🙏🏻
To bom and the Martian handbasket collective, this is y’all’s fault in the first place.🧎🏼‍♂️ A million thanks for the idea bouncing, process feedback, and keeping me (marginally) sane throughout this whole business. 💚
🗓 See you all again in February...
Until then, 🛌

Today’s highlight is on the super talented Ash @mister-eames! Read on for her thoughts on art, and you can find all of her incredible artwork here!
🎨 When did you start creating art for the Inception fandom, and what is your inspiration?
August 2021 for International Arthur Appreciation Day! I'd been lurking in the fandom since late 2020 and was just so blown away by the breadth and magnitude of talent!! I say this with love: because, in the best way, I felt like I had nothing to offer. I still feel that way and, oddly, I think that is what inspires me—that there are so many brilliant minds and ideas in this fandom; we took this one movie and we created an entire ecosystem out of it, we cross-pollinated other fandoms. It's... kind of calming, I feel like I don't have to burn myself out here. I can sit, observe, feel and create at my leisure. I don't have to worry about sequels or new seasons, my imagination can go as crazy or as calm as it wants to.
🎨 Tell us about your creative process, and which part do you enjoy the most about it?
I get very stuck on a single feeling or visual. Then it pesters me for days or hours or weeks until I do something about it, haha. I'll throw on a playlist and use the music as a footpath to reach that feeling/visual, if that makes sense. What I enjoy most is finishing it lol, getting it out of my head and releasing it into the universe so it's not mine to carry anymore.
🎨 Link us to your first and latest artwork, and how your style has evolved since then?
My first artwork for fandom, in general, was when I was a young teen for the Suikoden fandom—and is lost forever haha—but my first "artwork" for inception was a moodboard for Arthur Appreciation Day and my last was a gifset here.
Mmm, in terms of evolving... I've played around with moodboards since 2019 in other fandoms and I've just recently taught myself to make gifs in the last 8-12 months, and I have recently returned to traditional art so I'd say my style is a work in progress!! But I'm having fun dabbling in different mediums and hope to get better at them all!
🎨 What is your absolute favorite piece of art that you've made, and why?
The collab I did with @finelydressedspacemen for Inception Big Bang 2022 - it was my first real venture into digital art outside of gifs and moodboards and it was a fun experience to try and dip my fingers into a different medium!
🎨 What is something about Inception that you really want to make art for someday, and why?
I'd love to make art or gifsets for others existing fics but I'm always too shy to ask!! Outside of that, I have a large blank canvas in my home that I have been meaning to start a traditional art piece that is inception inspired. Very poker-esque. But yeah, I'd really love to make gifsets for fics.
🎨 Give a shoutout to your favorite Inception artists here!
@hcnnibal @stormofsharpthings @hirunoka @halfofawhole @birdlawco @youcantsaymylastname @darlingandmreames @mizunoir @sin-repent and I'm sure there are so many I'm forgetting, the wealth of talent that has contributed to this fandom is incredible. It's made me want to be both a better artist and writer.
🎨 Anything else you'd like to talk about art and the Inception fandom in general ❤
As someone who joined this fandom late I just have all the love and respect for this everyone who has come before me, who is still here, and those yet to come. I think this is a really special place to be and everyone is so very welcoming and kind and creative. To another 12 years!! Thank you all x

RIGHT YEAH FORGOT ABOUT THAT SORRY
ANYWAY
art style. the first rule of art style is HAVE FUN. If you have an element you reeeally want to add to your art style but you're like "but my art style doesn't look like that :(" just. add it. Art style is not a law and is ever-changing and art is about having FUN and making COOL-ASS ART
second rule of art style: "art style" just refers to the usual way to employ colours, lineart, form, mood, shape, subject, etc etc etc in your art. All together, it makes up a unique way of drawing that you have.
take LavenderTowne. (I'm not going to post any of her art here bc reposting without permission (even with credit) is shitty, but that's a link to her youtube where you can see what I'm talking about.) Her art is full of pastel colours, round lines/soft edges, large eyes, small noses, feminine-presenting characters, visible and defined lineart, people/humanoids, and a "cute" aesthetic. She goes for a more cartoony effect with largely exaggerated proportions; she's closer to steven universe than she-ra, yk? Additionally, she uses more cel shading than photorealistic rendering.
All those together make up her art style. And not every single one of her drawings has all those elements, but most of them have many.
Meanwhile, Sam Does Arts--despite also drawing non-realistic feminine people in digital art--has a much, much different art style. He has less defined lines, more realistic proportions, softer shading, soft lighting, and a general peaceful, calm, realistic-but-to-the-left vibe.
Art style is just about what choices you make with how you draw. Do you use bright colours or pastel ones? Do you draw in black-and-white? Do you have a lot of thick, defined lines or thinner, vaguer ones? Do you draw X facial feature big or small? Do you go for realism or complete cartoon or somewhere in between? Do you draw people, animals, landscapes, whole scenes, etc? What mood do your pieces tend to have? Do you do round lines or sharp ones? What perspective do you tend to draw from? Do you want your art to look 3-d or 2-d?
It's important to note that you don't need an answer for all of those, and that they're all "usually". You don't have to always use bright, saturated colours just because they're usually present in your art style. You don't always have to avoid drawing feminine people just because you usually draw masculine ones. And you can have more than one art style! My "elaborate detailed painting" style and my usual style are very different, and that's ok.
Finding your art style is literally just going "ok, do I want to do/like to do this or this or this more often?" and then doing it. You can yoink elements from other artists, too; if you like how artist ABC draws eyes, draw eyes like them. If you like how artist XYZ does their shading, shade like them. Just don't take a bunch of elements from one artist's style, because that's then copying them.
Also: you already have an art style. You already have a way you naturally do your art. "Finding your art style" is really about editing your current art style into something you like better, via practice and actually asking yourself "why does my art look like this? what do I want to change about my style?" and then you change it accordingly.
I want to draw more poses and start shifting my style away from "person from the shoulders up with no background", so... I'm doing that. I don't like the way I used to draw eyes, so I changed it. It's a lot easier than it feels at first, and you really just need to spend some time practicing the way you'd rather draw.
I'd like to emphasize that art style is about how you like to draw. It's not about what's popular, or copying cool tv show 273, or what you feel like real artists should be doing. Your art style is one hundred percent about what YOU want to do and what YOU find fun to draw.
That can be what's popular, btw. It can be similar to the cool tv show you like. But don't do something just because you feel like you have to. Do you want to draw nothing but photorealistic cacti? DO IT. Art is for you.
anyway!! i hope that is a tad bit helpful!! feel free to ask more if you have more questions, I had a Lot more thoughts about this than i'd thought it did :D

Wanting to spread some positivity among fan artists!
When you get this ask, link your
Favourite art piece you’ve ever drawn
A piece where you experimented with a different art style than your usual one
Your very first artwork for the fandom of your choice.
You don’t have to link just a single work. It can be commissions, sketches or even little notebook doodles. It can be old childhood drawings. This is all about you and your wonderful little gifts your own fandoms!
Thank you for taking such time and precision to create beautiful things!
Mads!!!! how you doing?
Favourite art piece you've ever drawn
THIS. I just love this one so much because they're like my favourite characters/ favourite trio from my favourite book in the Playchoices universe, because that's a full body piece which is hard. They're the best<3
And the Cas x MC one! obsessed with this actually, because their outfits here is kinda very hard and I'm glad It looks exactly how I want it to look like. I'm not into how I draw their hairs anymore but I discovered something about drawing hairs here so yeahh.
Also, the piece I'm currently working on is one of my favourite! posting it in a few days maybe? lol
A piece where you experimented with a different art style than your usual one
The Blaine Hayes art piece is where I experimented lighting. And It looks fine ig? I like it, I tried to make the light a neon light cuz neon looks cool!
And ofc, the Six Fanarts Challenge! you can clearly see the differences of how I draw their faces, Mal is the first one and Lawrence is the last. I think we can see more expression in Lawrence's face than Mal's, the lips, and the eyes. You can also see the differences in their outfits especially the F!Cas's one and Murphy's. F!Cas's fit, I made it more basic and changed the design of her top (cuz I was lazy💀✋) and It looks weird lol. And Murphy's fit, I completed it, the chains and the belts (guess I'm not that lazy here) same in Lawrence's! and how I coloured it looks different than the first ones too. Funny how a style can change in a few days XD
Your very first artwork for the fandom of your choice.
I'm gonna choose the Playchoices fam because it's the main theme of my blog. So, the first fanart I posted here is actually the Trystan x MC x Alice lol because I always doubt that I can draw digitally. I know digital art a longgg time ago but I'm just always not in the mood to try and learn the tools and this and that because they're a LOT, I was like, why can't there be a pen that draws exactly what's on my mind🙄 But I'm glad I pushed and teach myself instead of a pencil and a piece of paper that hurt my damn hands (but thanks to them I learned how to draw in the first place) but digital is where I improved.
That's not even the first ever fanart I made for the fandom! I just didn't posted it lol so I'll just put it right here ig?
Tumblr media
Yeah that's Raleigh Carerra from Platinum and he doesn't have a face because I don't know how to draw a face then💀 I don't even know how to blend colours so yeahh.
That's all! and moreee to come cuz I'm only getting started! Thank you so much for this one, Mads! I love you and have a great day<333
